EDITOR‘S NOTE

F

or COVID-19, there are more vaccine candidates in the process at the same time than there have ever been for an infectious disease. All of the candidates are attempting to accomplish the same goal: viral immunity, and some might even be able to avoid transmission. Currently, there are several technologies used in the development of the vaccine. One is the mRNA used by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. This vaccine technology, as its name implies, attaches a viral sequence to messenger RNA, a molecule that our cells use to hold DNA instructions for protein synthesis. This indicates that it only contains the virus’s genetic code, not a live virus. The immune system should be able to detect a foreign invader in the body based on this alone. Another one is viral vector. This method employs a genetically engineered, noninfectious strain of a live virus that is distinct from the one that triggers COVID-19. When it reaches our bodies, it releases a spike antigen, which is a harmless virus that mimics SARS-CoV-2. As the body learns that the spike protein is a foreigner, it activates the immune system, which generates antibodies to kill the infection. Some pharma companies

4

Comparative Analysis of Covid-19 Vaccine Technologies also use inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus and protein-based vaccines. To enhance our immune system, inactivated vaccines use a pathogen that has been engineered such that it cannot replicate. They’re harmless and they can’t get you sick. Booster doses, on the other hand, could be needed. Protein-based subunit vaccines are made up of purified pieces of the pathogen that causes the infection, but they can’t cause COVID-19. They will, however, elicit an immune response in the host. It’s important to understand your options for COVID-19 vaccines, particularly now that the country intends to purchase multiple forms from various manufacturers. Knowing how vaccines function will also grant people peace of mind, as immunization and a long-term response to the pandemic are finally in sight.

Here is an explainer on the vaccine innovations that pharma firms used to perform a phenomenal feat—stopping the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19 in record time—to help you better consider the various vaccines that will be released this year.

Pfizer-BioNTech It’s an mRNA vaccine encased in a lipid nanoparticle that codes for the virus’s spike protein. The cells produce the spike protein after being injected, causing the body’s immune system to detect the virus. It showed 95 percent effectiveness in Phase III trials. The Pfizer-BioNTech jab necessitates freezing at -94 degrees Fahrenheit, which entails the use of advanced freezers.

Type: mRNA Doses: 2, 21 Days Apart Efficacy: About 95%. Apparently 100% at preventing hospitalization and death.

Variants: Lab data reports “quite effective” against the UK variant, as well as the South African and Latin American variants.

28

Moderna It’s an mRNA vaccine, similar to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The Moderna vaccine, on the other hand, is safe for up to 30 days at 36 to 46 degrees F, which is around the temperature of a normal home or medical refrigerator. Itcan be kept for up to six months at -4 degrees F.

Type: mRNA Doses: 2, 28 Days Apart Efficacy: About 95%. Apparently 100% at preventing hospitalization and death.

Variants: Lab data report “quite effective” against the UK, the South African, and Latin American variants.

S T O R Y

AstraZeneca-University of Oxford The findings came from studies in the United Kingdom and Brazil, and they showed effectiveness of up to 90%. The vaccine was successful in avoiding COVID-19 infection, with no hospitalizations or serious cases reported among those who received it. The AstraZeneca vaccine can be packaged, shipped, and treated for at least six months at usual refrigerated temperatures of 3646 degrees F and delivered in current healthcare settings. AstraZeneca published primary analysis on March 25, 2021, revealing that the vaccine had 76 percent efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19, 100 percent efficacy against serious or essential illness and hospitalizations, and 85 percent efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 in recipients 65 and older. The vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford is based on technologies developed by Vaccitech, an Oxford spinout corporation. It utilizes a replication-deficient chimp viral vector based on a modified variant of the human cold virus (adenovirus), which infects chimps. It comprises the spike protein’s genetic material. The cells develop the spike protein after vaccination, which stimulates the immune system to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus. 32

Type: Adenovirus-based Doses: 2, 28 Days Apart Efficacy: Currently about 70% overall. Variants: At least one study reported it has little effect against the South African variant, but seems to be effective against both Brazilian and UK variants.

Johnson & Johnson’s Jannsen The J&J vaccine only needs a single injection, unlike the other three vaccine candidates, which all require two doses approximately 28 days apart. According to preliminary findings from the vaccine’s Phase I/IIa trial, a single dose of the vaccine elicited a strong immune response and was generally well tolerated. The ENSEMBLE 2 report also looked at a two-dose treatment. The single-shot vaccine is 66 percent successful in avoiding moderate-to-severe COVID-19 28 days after vaccination, according to the Phase III ENSEMBLE trial. After 49 days, however, it showed 100 percent effectiveness in avoiding serious disease. The vaccine is based on the company’s AdVac technology platform, which was used to produce the company’s licensed Ebola vaccine as well as investigational vaccine candidates for Zika, RSV, and HIV. It is based on the use of an inactivated common cold virus, which is similar to the AstraZeneca-University of Oxford one.

Type: Adenovirus-based Doses: 1 Efficacy: In a global clinical trial conducted

by J&J, it was found to be 66% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infections. It was marginally higher in the United States, at 72 percent. It seems to be fully successful in avoiding hospitalization and death.

Variants: There is support that the vaccine

is safe against the variants, based on clinical trials in Africa, the United Kingdom, and Latin America, albeit less against the Latin American and South African strains.

Russia’s Sputnik V Vaccine In early November, the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia announced that the second dose had a 92 percent efficacy score, despite the fact that the vaccine had just been approved for use in August, before even starting a Phase III trial. During the continuing Phase III trial, it was focused on a first interim review 21 days after the first injection. Based on recent preliminary results, the company claimed 95 percent effectiveness on November 24. They announced 91.4 percent efficacy on December 14, 2020. It also promised to share one of its two human adenoviral vectors with AstraZeneca in order to improve the vaccine’s effectiveness. The Lancet released Phase III evidence on February 2, 2021, showing a 91.6 percent efficacy against the virus’s initial strain.

Type: Adenovirus-based Doses: 2 Efficacy: 91.4% Variants: Unknown. Clinical trial data was largely conducted in Russia prior to the emergence of major variants. 36

Sinovac Biotech Sinovac Biotech, headquartered in China, announced on January 13, 2021 that its COVID-19 vaccine had a 50.38 percent efficacy rate in late-stage clinical trials in Brazil. Clinical studies conducted by the firm have shown a wide range of effectiveness rates. A local trial in Indonesia had a 65 percent efficacy rate, but the experiment only had 1,620 participants. In December 2020, Turkey registered a 91.25 percent efficacy score. Last week, the Butantan Institute, a local affiliate in Brazil, announced a 78 percent efficacy rate in mild cases and a 100 percent efficacy rate in serious and moderate infections. It’s an inactivated vaccine that uses SARS-CoV-2 viruses that have been inactivated.

Type: Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus Doses: 2 Efficacy: 50.38% to 91.25%, depending on the clinical trial Variants: Unknown, but a Brazilian study found that it was 50.4 percent effective in avoiding symptomatic infections.

Novavax Novavax revealed on January 28, 2021 that its COVID-19 vaccine, NVXCoV2373, met the primary endpoint in its Phase III trial in the United Kingdom, with a vaccine efficacy of 89.3 percent. The jab is a COVID-19 vaccine candidate dependent on proteins. It also includes data from the Phase IIb experiment in South Africa, as well as data from other Phase I, II, and III experiments. It has also shown high therapeutic effectiveness against variants in the United Kingdom and South Africa. The vaccine uses the company’s recombinant nanoparticle technology and its patented saponin-based Matrix-M adjuvant to create a full-length prefusion spike antigen. It’s stable between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius and comes in a ready-to-use liquid state.

Type: Protein-based vaccine Doses: 2 Efficacy: 89.3% Variants: Effective against UK and South African 40

CanSino Biologics CanSino Biologics developed the vaccine in collaboration with the Chinese military. It has a 65.7 percent effectiveness score in preventing symptomatic cases. This is based on a multi-country report shared on Twitter by Pakistan’s health adviser, Faisal Sultan, on February 8, 2021. The 30,000 patients in the Phase III trial had a 90.98 percent effectiveness in reducing acute disease. A single shot is all that is needed.

Type: Viral vector, loading an antigen from the SARS-CoV-2 virus onto an adenovirus.

Harvard’s Next Gen Soft Robots Inspired by Toys

B

uckling, the sudden loss of structural stability, is usually the stuff of engineering nightmares. Mechanical buckling means catastrophic failure for every structural system from rockets to soufflés. It’s what caused the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, among numerous other disasters. But, as anyone who has ever played with a toy popper knows, buckling also releases a lot of energy. When the structure of a popper buckles, the energy released by the instability sends the toy flying through the air. Now, researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Harvard’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering have harnessed that energy and used buckling to their advantage to build a fast-moving, inflatable soft actuator.

60

“Soft robots have enormous potential for a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from minimally invasive surgical tools and exoskeletons to warehouse grippers and video game add-ons,” said Benjamin Gorissen, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS and co-first author of the paper. “But applications for today’s soft actuators are limited by their speed.” Fluidic soft actuators tend to be slow to power up and move because they need a lot of fluid to work and the flow, whether gas or liquid, is restricted by tubes and valves in the device. “In this work, we showed that we can harness elastic instabilities to overcome this restriction, enabling us to decouple the slow input from the output and make a fast-jumping fluidic soft actuator,” said David Melancon, a graduate student at SEAS and co-first author of the paper. “This actuator is a building block that could

be integrated into a fully soft robotic system to give soft robots that can already crawl, walk and swim the ability to jump,” said Katia Bertoldi, the William and Ami Kuan Danoff Professor of Applied Mechanics at SEAS and senior author of the study. “By incorporating our jumper into these designs, these robots could navigate safely through uncharted landscapes.”

of the team wanted to increase the instability. As fate would have it, one of the pioneers of shell buckling research sits just two floors down from Bertoldi’s team in Pierce Hall. Professor Emeritus John W. Hutchinson, who joined the Harvard faculty in 1964, developed some of the first theories to characterize and quantify the buckling shell structures.

Bertoldi is also an Associate Faculty member of the Wyss Institute.

“Our research shines a different perspective on some of [Hutchinson’s] theories and that enables us to apply them to a different research domain,” said Gorissen.

The researchers relied on the same type of buckling that propels toy poppers, known as shell buckling. The team designed the actuators with two spherical caps — essentially two poppers— nestled together like Russian nesting dolls and connected at the base. Upon inflation, pressure builds up between the two caps. The thinner outer cap expands up while the thicker inner cap buckles and collapses, hitting the ground and catapulting the device into the air.

“It was nice to be able to get feedback from one of the pioneers in the field,” said Melancon. “He developed the theory to prevent failure and now we’re using it to trigger buckling.” Using established theories as well as more recent numerical simulation tools, the researchers were able to characterize and tune the pressure volume relationship between the two shells to develop a soft robot capable of quickly releasing a specific amount of energy over and over again. How Can An Anilox Roll Help Out Your Business If you’re in the printing industry, then you more than likely need and anilox roll to help you get ideas and information onto the paper that you’re going to distribute to the masses. If you’re not familiar with what an anilox roll is, then continue reading below!

What Is An Anilox Roll? An anilox roll is utilized in the printing industry mainly. It is used to measure out a specific amount of ik. The roll will then apply the ink to a printing plate. The roll is typically a cylinder that is made out of steel or aluminum. The exterior of the roll is then engraved with millions and millions of very small and fine dimples. These dimples are known as anilox cells. The anilox cells are used to hold the ink. To get a print onto the paper, the anilox roll is covered in a very exact amount of ink and 64

then the roll is raised and it is transferred over the printing plate. The anilox cells always vary in their size, number, and shape and they are used to determine how the anilox roll delivers the ink to the printing plate.

Types Of Anilox Rolls There are two main kinds of anilox rolls, and they vary mainly on the amount of detail that each roll is capable of delivering. The term “line screen” is used when referring to the number of cells that are engraved to the anilox. Continue reading to see if your business would be better suited for one over the other!

Low Line Screen This kind of screen cannot provide as much precision with the product that you’re printing onto. Instead, this type of screen is only used when a very heavy letter of ink is needed. It typically gives the page a bold appearance

and tends to be used with heavy block lettering. Due to the lack of precision, there is usually only one color that is used with this kind of anilox roll.

High Line Screen Unlike the low line screen, the high line screen can provide a very intricate amount of detail. This is because it has a lot more anilox cells present on the screen itself. With this screen, more specific details can be provided and more colors can be used (up to four usually).

If a photograph is going to be reproduced, this tends to be the kind of screen that is used because of the vivid detail that it can provide. In most circumstances, the two screens will need to be used in conjunction for a final piece to look complete. Additionally, each color that needs to be applied to the page usually requires a completely new screen and the colors will have to be applied individually. It is important that you have a skilled press operator running the screens at your printing press because they will save you time and money in the kinds of screens that are produced for your specific printing jobs. 65

How the vulnerability worked During the configuration stage, the mobile app sends the Wi-Fi network credentials in plaintext to the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. This allows the hacker to sniff the packets and find out the sensitive data it needs to connect to the user’s WiFi. Worthy mentions: • The attacker doesn’t need to know anything about the victim’s network and does not need to be associated with that WiFi access point. Sniffing WiFi packets broadcasted over unencrypted channels is standard in the WiFi RFC • Attackers can trigger the reconfiguration of the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. One way to do this is to continuously send de-authentication packets, so that the device is dropped from the wireless network. At this point, the App loses connectivity and tells the user to reconfigure the device.

68

Impact Once in possession of a user’s WIFI password, an attacker has full access to the network (worth mentioning that security on internal network is really lax with many devices (such as Smart TVs) allowing interaction even without any authentication whatsoever). Examples of possible things an attacker might do without user knowledge on Amazon Ring Video Doorbell: • Interact with all devices within the household network; • Intercept network traffic and run ‘man-in-the-middle’ attacks • Access all local storage (NAS, for example) and subsequently access private photos, videos and other type of information • Exploit all vulnerabilities existing in the devices connected to the local network and get full access to each and every device; that may lead into reading emails and private conversations • Get access to security cameras and steal video recordings

What the user needs to do The Amazon Ring Video Doorbell already received an automatic security update that fixes the issue. So, to be on the safe side Ring Video Doorbell Pro users can make sure they have the latest update installed and if this is the case, they’re safe. 69

Pandemic and the Engineering Business

T

he Covid-19 pandemic is escalating fast with the World Health Organisation having declared a global emergency. We are now witnessing several austerity measures including quarantines and curfews to attempt to limit the spread of the virus. For this reason, businesses must prepare themselves for the worst and to make sure that there is a crisis marketing communications plan in place to face the pandemic. There is no doubt that every business and organisation will be affected by Covid-19 and needs to know how to communicate proactively with transparency and clarity. The globalization of our economy has created an interconnected ecosystem that relies on international trade and supply chains.

72

Global Engineering Company Challenge The COVID-19 pandemic has presented companies with several challenges that are already taking its toll on the reputation of several business operating in energy, power, water, industrial, engineering, tech, construction, mining, utilities and manufacturing sectors. Disruption in global supply chains, curtailment of travel, cancelled events, working from home policies, employees infected with the virus, and in the worst case, business shut-down are now all part of reality.

We are now experiencing challenging times that we have never witnessed before recently or ever. The spread of the Coronavirus is no longer just a possibility, rather, an ugly reality that is threatening the life of several business sectors. Shutdowns and downsizing are inevitable. There is a glaring need to develop solid corporate marketing communications in place to protect the corporate reputation and wither the crisis before it is too late which is why we developed a 7-step guide to navigating through communications crises during the COVID-19 outbreak. One of the most important steps for industrial, tech and engineering businesses to follow is that corporate marketing communications needs to always support the pandemic management efforts of the respective government and the World Health Organisation (WHO), referring to their guidance, healthcare advice and regulations.

New Study By Dr. Steven Quay Concludes that SARS-CoV-2 Came from a Laboratory

W

uhan Institute of Virology Research in December 2019 Shows Evidence of Adenovirus Vaccine Experiments in Patients with COVID-19 A paper was published today by Dr. Steven Quay, M.D., PhD., CEO of Atossa Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATOS), entitled, “A Bayesian analysis concludes beyond a reasonable doubt that SARS-CoV-2 is not a natural zoonosis but instead is laboratory derived.” The 193page paper can be downloaded from Zenodo, a general-purpose open-access repository operated by CERN, here: https://zenodo.org/ record/4477081# A short ‘explainer’ video about the paper is here: https://zenodo.org/record/4477212#. The purpose of the analysis was to determine the origin of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Beginning with a likelihood of 98.2% that it was a zoonotic jump from nature with only a 1.2% probability it was a laboratory escape, twenty-six different, independent facts and evidence were examined systematically. The final conclusion is that it is a 99.8% probability SARS-CoV-2 came from a laboratory and only a 0.2% likelihood it came from nature.

80

“Like many others, I am concerned about what appear to be significant conflicts of interest between members of the WHO team and scientists and doctors in China and how much this will impede an unbiased examination of the origin of SARS-CoV-2,” said Dr. Quay.

“By taking only publicly available, scientific evidence about SARS-CoV-2 and using highly conservative estimates in my analysis, I nonetheless conclude that it is beyond a reasonable doubt that SARS-CoV-2 escaped from a laboratory. The additional evidence of what appears to be adenovirus vaccine genetic sequences in specimens from five patients from December 2019 and sequenced by the Wuhan Institute of Virology requires an explanation. You would see this kind of data in a vaccine challenge trial, for example. Hopefully the WHO team can get answers to these questions.” To assist in finding the truth and to get feedback on the methodologies used and conclusions reached in this paper, a pre-publication copy of this paper was sent to twenty-six scientists worldwide, including the WHO investigators currently in Wuhan, Wuhan Institute of Virology scientists, as well as other prominent virologists.

About Steven Quay, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Steven Quay has 360+ published contributions to medicine and has been cited over 10,000 times, placing him in the top 1% of scientists worldwide. He holds 87 US patents and has invented seven FDA-approved pharmaceuticals which have helped over 80 million people. He is the author of the best-selling book on surviving the pandemic, Stay Safe: A Physician’s Guide to Survive Coronavirus. He is the CEO of Atossa Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: ATOS), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics for treating breast cancer and COVID-19. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from The University of Michigan, was a postdoctoral fellow in the Chemistry Department at MIT with Nobel Laureate H. Gobind Khorana, a resident at the Harvard-MGH Hospital, and spent almost a decade on the faculty of Stanford University School of Medicine. Taiwan’s innovative technology allows for germ eliminating fabric by making use of semiconductor mechanics

W

ith COVID-19 becoming more deadly with mutations and secondary infections becoming more frequent, people have shifted our focus from using protective masks to rushing and cutting lines to get the new vaccine. A company has created a textile that is about to be a game changer in our virus invested world. A few days ago, ACTife released a new technology for antibacterial fabric. These textile materials utilize semiconductor sputtering technology, which uses silver, copper and titanium sputtering to produce a hydroxyl radical on the surface of the fabric. Because hydroxyl radicals can destroy viruses and bacteria in medicine and make their proteins lose their function. Therefore, the materials developed by ACTife can not only block viruses and bacteria, but also use hydroxyl radicals to prevent contact with the bacteria and viruses while they are adsorbed on the surface of the fabric. This technology has been verified by the SGS, Boken, Intertek, and Japan SEK to effectively sterilize 99.9% of bacteria and germs. FYI https://health-ecoforum.medium.com/ The research team of Fu Jen Catholic University Taiwan published an anti-virus research report on ACTife’s nano sputtered fabric and Stated “The fabric successfully blocked and absorbed the germs and bacteria on the cloth, which prevented secondary infection of the virus.” M. L.Chang, Chairman of ACTife, said: “This sputtering technology was originally used in semiconductors. When the pandemic broke out, our research team discovered that the three-metal nano-atoms of silver, copper and 84

titanium used in medical materials had an excellent sterilization effect, so we began to develop products such as masks and protective gears. We look forward to this technology and what it can contribute to global pandemic prevention.” This technology generates free radicals which causes the side chains of amino acids on the surface make proteins lose their function, thereby making germs harmless and greatly reducing the risk of infection. Not only can it apply to masks, but anything that uses fabric like towels, socks, clothing or air filters. CEO of ACTife Dr. Y. P. Lu also pointed out: “The advantage of physical antibacterial properties is that it makes the material more durable and does not precipitate any toxic or undesirable substances. As of now, the most used antibacterial chemical is bleach and the substance of bleach is actually a high concentration of sodium hypochlorite, which is well known for killing germs but it is harmful to the human body and the environment in terms of smell and touch. The silver, copper, and titanium with splashes of ACTife Plating technology is a physical antibacterial technology that produces a free radical shield on the surface of the fabric. This highly active free radical shield eliminates bacteria and viruses that pass through it. It has the excellent function of long-lasting and washable resistance. In addition, the surface of the material does not stick to bacteria and viruses, and can be safely reused. Compared with ordinary masks and protective clothing on the market, it is not only more environmentally friendly, but also does not cause pollution and other infection risks. With its innovative antibacterial and antiviral technology, Actife has now entered the medical material market and is looking to use their innovative technology to further enhance our protection against coronavirus. 85

Building Green For a Sustainable Future

P

lanning for a more sustainable future means looking into green building practices. These can involve any number of resources and materials that optimize energy-use, especially when they are adjusted to suit the natural environment. If you are interested in pursuing a greener degree of sustainability in construction, consider some of the following things you can do.

Focus on Smaller Spaces No matter the green practices you establish in a larger home, it will always be easier to employ sustainable practices in a smaller one. Though a smaller property will be much more eco-friendly, you do not need to dive into the “tiny home” market. Think about the purpose of the home and establish all of the base necessities before you think about expanding. Having the basic blueprints for functionality and comfort will allow you to plan ahead better for your sustainability per every square foot on the property itself. Start small and then begin adjusting for lifestyle. 92

Use the Appropriate Insulation Your insulation is critical to saving energy during seasonal changes. When your home loses heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, your HVAC units need to work harder to make up for the lost changes in temperature. To avoid this, focus on using the right insulation. Some of the most effective green options include sheep’s wool and cotton. Both aerogel and icynene are available as well, with the latter providing homeowners with some of the most efficient sealing opportunities available. Adjust according to your budget, and do not be afraid to spend more now for greater savings later.

Cool Through the Roof The primary material you use to cool your rooftop can make a tremendous difference in the home’s energy rating. Use products that can reflect the sun’s energy to prevent heat from sapping into your home. Both slate and terracotta tiles can be perfect for homes that spend a lot of time in the open sun.

Some special membranes may be available as well. Like with any other such system, adjust according to your budget and climate expectations, as milder regions will not need as much rooftop adjustment as hotter ones.

Work with Green Building Materials Choosing eco-friendly building materials is absolutely vital to the longevity of a greenhouse. These materials are usually made from recycled or reclaimed objects, and they are tested for their durability to provide homeowners with security and structural integrity. Some of the greenest building materials include reclaimed steel and bamboo. Precast concrete can also be an excellent option, especially in larger homes that need the structural stability. Depending on the size and specifics of the home itself, professionals may work with any combination of green building materials to get the desired results in the property.

Establish Solar Panels As solar technology becomes more and more accessible, more homes are beginning to feature solar panels on their rooftops. These can be essential in reducing energy costs throughout the house because they produce energy from one of the most readily renewable

resources available: sunlight. These panels are particularly recommended in warm areas that enjoy a lot of open sunlight. Choosing the appropriate generators and battery storage systems will allow homeowners to synergize results even more efficiently. With only a little bit of maintenance every few months, homeowners can look forward to tremendous savings and energy efficiency ratings.

Use the Right Colors Sometimes the colors you choose can make all the difference. Depending on what the weather is like around the property, you may choose from a specific color palette in order to keep the house warmer or cooler as necessary. Lighter tones reflect sunlight, making them desirable for the hotter months. Darker tones, on the other hand, absorb sunlight, allowing heat to stay circulated through the property for longer. Homes built in milder climates will have more freedom regarding their color options, but thinking about weather trends can allow for better savings. The cost benefits of painting with the appropriate materials and colors are tremendous in the long run. Versatility will be your most powerful tool in this field. Not all solutions will work well with all environments, but knowing what to incorporate in the appropriate areas will lead to results you can be proud of.

Workplace Digitalisation is a Key Driver of Success in Asia

O

rganisations in Asia must pay close attention to the digital experience of their employees in order to find more success in terms of growth, the establishment of a healthy and progressive work environment, and the attraction and retention of top talent, according to new research from VMware. Covering 12 countries within the APAC region, the annual report included 200 respondents from the Asia and explored the impact of digital workspace technologies on organisations.

The digitalisation of the workplace is a particularly important factor for prospective employees in the APAC region, with 92 percent of respondents saying that the flexibility of digital tools usage would positively influence their decision to join an organisation. Furthermore, 70.5 percent of respondents in Asia agreed that their current employer should focus their efforts on equipping the 96

workforce with the best digital tools, while only 28.5 percent believe that current efforts were enough. Part of the study also focused on the biggest challenges that hindered the delivery of optimal digital experience in the workplace. The top three issues selected by respondents in the APAC were funding (46.9 percent) time (45.8 percent), and a lack of understanding of what employees want and need (28.8 percent). Possibly the biggest disparity is between how employees feel they contribute to their organisation’s digitisation efforts and the viewpoint of decision makers. More than half (58.7 percent) of Asian employees surveyed don’t believe they have a voice when it comes to what digital technologies are used in the office, while 86 percent of ITDMs believe they give their employees a voice within this area.

“The research clearly shows that by offering modern, flexible digital tools, employers can help to deliver a positive experience for existing employees and promote growth. It can also help to attract the prospective talent who increasingly view digitalisation workplace solutions as a key part of their work experience,” said Ahmed Auda, Managing Director, VMware. “Companies would be welladvised to better engage their employees and gain new insights into how digitalisation tools can benefit day-to-day activities and improve the workplace environment. This may open up new avenues for investment on other digitalisation technologies that in turn could transform the business,” he added.

The findings of the survey are especially relevant given Asia’s ambitious economic diversification plans and ambitions to capitalize on the digital economy. VMware is committed to helping organizations to digitally transform and so contribute to these plans. Earlier this year, the University of Sharjah highlighted that VMware helped it create an immersive technology experience. By deploying VMware Horizon, the University has empowered students and faculty to be successful by giving access to anytime, anywhere learning. This was an important part of the university’s digital strategy to attract the best students and lecturers amid strong global competition. 97
