Overshadowed by the hard realities of life, Wang Baixing rose above the tides as he established Tangshi Cable Factory in 1988 with RMB 5000 out of his own pocket. This month’s issue features the humble beginnings and the recent developments of Baixing’s Zhongli Sci-Tech Group, a top 500 private company and a top ten independent innovation enterprise in China.

Product innovation has remained in Zhongli’s core right from the very start. Since that fateful day, the business grew from producing cable alone to covering five high-end manufacturing industries at present. Shortly after eight years since it began its operations, they have already hit 70% of China’s domestic market share. For a relatively new business, this may sound a really incredible feat!

As commented by Baixing himself, continuously developing new products to tailor-fit the individual needs of industries is the key to Zhongli’s recent achievements. Talk about a Steve Jobs moment – a leader with a vision of catering to the actual needs of industries.

This issue also talked about how Baixing built his manufacturing empire, its history as well as the challenges he faced across time. Among these challenges is when an overcapacity in the PV industry resulted to a price slump. As a firm believer of the industry, he simply did not retreat. Now that’s a mark of a true entrepreneur.

中利集团激荡三十年：从5000块到500强 30 years’ Turbulence for Zhongli Group, a top 500 company built on RMB5000 In 1988, China was awakened, its ancient glories and mighty power overshadowed by dust. Roaring and struggling, this exhausted sleeping lion remained vibrant and persevered, having seen much of the changes in human life.

1988 is the beginning of the first ten years of China’s opening and reform. This year saw Wang baixing, with RMB 5000 out of his own pocket, establish Tangshi cable factory in Changshu city, Jiangsu province.30 years of continuous innovation and upgrading helped charted Zhongli’s business map covering five high-end manufacturing industries, namely, special wire/cable and fiber optic cable, new energy PV industrial chain, new polymer material, military electronics and titanium 3D metallic printing. Zhongli Sci-Tech Group (herein referred to as Zhongli) had grown up to be a national key high-tech group, a top 500 private company in China and a top ten independent innovation enterprise.

Every leaping forward was closely related to product innovation.

In 1994, Zhongli’s first take-off came with the successful development of flame-retardant flexible cable, the sales of which reached 10 million yuan that year. Fire-resistant, low-smoke and halogen-free flexible cable re-developed in 1996 filled the domestic gaps and obtained 15 national invention patents. This market hit held 70% of China’s domestic market share.

Since then, Zhongli had successively launched new products such as communication optical cable, special flexible optical cable, digital internal shielding photoelectric cable for railway, new polymer material, automobile airbag and magnesium alloy parts, obtaining 23 national patents and 6 invention patents in total.

Wang Baixing once commented that continuously developing new products to tailor to the special industrial needs is the key to Zhongli’s achievements today.

From an A-share market beginner to an innovation PV leader Since its birth, it took Wang Baixing 21 years to land Zhongli in A share market in 2009, while it took Zhongli only 8 years to rise to an industrial lead from a beginner in PV industry. Capital and industrial momentum are the key driving forces shaping Wang’s business empire.

In 2010, Zhongli founded Jiangsu Talesun Power Technology Company (later renamed Suzhou Talesun Solar Technology Company) to officially start expansion into PV industry. Having operated for just less than half a year, Zhongli encountered the down times in PV industry when overcapacity resulted in price slump. At that time, global PV manufacturing was running under deficit in a whole.

Wang Baixing did not retreat despite the fast declining. He was a firm believer in the future of PV industry amid China’s significant progress.

While generally not considered a wise choice then, he took immediate action to build PV power plants in western regions, topping 700MW in 2012. By 2014, Zhongli had already developed over 2GW capacities when the rush for PV power plants just began.

此后，中利集团相继开发了通信光缆和特种软光 缆系列、铁路数字内屏蔽光电综合缆系列、高分 子新材料系列、汽车安全气囊和镁合金零部件系 列等新产品，共获23项国家专利和6大项发明专 利。 王柏兴曾说，中利之所以能取得今天的成就，其 中最关键的一点在于：适应行业特殊需求，不断 开发新颖产品。 从A股新秀到光伏行业创新引领者 从公司创立到2009年登陆A股，王柏兴用了21 年；从A股新秀到光伏行业创新引领者，王柏兴 仅用了8年时间，其商业帝国的崛起，离不开资本 与产业的双轮驱动。 2010年，中利集团投资设立“ 江苏腾晖电力科 技有限公司”（后改名为“ 苏州腾晖光伏技术有 限公司”），正式进军光伏行业。然而，刚投产 不到半年的中利就遇到了光伏行业发展低谷。由 于产能过剩，产品出现跳楼式降价，全球光伏制 造业几乎都处于亏损状态。 面对行业寒潮，王柏兴没有退缩，他坚定地认为 光伏产业在国家大发展的背景下会有一番作为， 在外人不看好的情况下，他果断在西部投建光伏 电站，2012年就做到了700余MW。在2014年行 业一窝蜂开始抢做光伏电站时，中利已经开发了 超2GW电站项目。 此后两年间，大型地面电站在中国西部被大规模 建设，然而在迅速发展的同时也暴露出一些问 题，由于受限电、土地、消纳等因素影响，西部 电站受到相关政策的限制，很多光伏公司因此出 现资金短缺等财务问题。

In the following two years, large ground power plants were built on a large scale in western China with their own problems.

As western region plants are restricted by relevant policies in load curtailment, land acquisition and power consumption, many PV companies are inflicted with financial problems, such as shortage of funds.

彼时王柏兴已带领中利团队抽身出来向“ 光伏 +” 应用模式转型，并积极响应国家相关扶贫政 策的号召，探索光伏扶贫模式的创新应用。由于 掌门人王柏兴敏锐的市场嗅觉与独特的判断力， 中利平稳度过了2012年光伏寒潮及后来的西部电 站危机。

At that time, Wang Baixing had already led Zhongli out in its transition to “Photovoltaic+” schema. In response to the national call for eliminating poverty, he actively explored innovative ways of PV poverty alleviation. Wang baixing’s keen market sense and unique judgment tided Zhongli over the PV depression in 2012 and the subsequent western power plant crisis.

对“ 光伏+” 的探索，让王柏兴找到了新的价 值所在，他带领中利集团投身于光伏扶贫事业， 从之前的投资开发建设商业电站的重资产模式转 向了光伏扶贫的轻资产EPC总包模式。

PV poverty alleviation makes a more brilliant career Probing into “Photovoltaic+” schema enabled Wang Baixing to discover his new interests. Under his guidance, Zhongli devoted itself to PV poverty alleviation, shifting its focus from capital-centered commercial power plants to light asset EPC contracting for poverty reduction.

From 2015 to 2017, Zhongli pioneered the launch of new third generation agricultural PV poverty alleviation programs: the first generation being “Smart PV + Technological agriculture”；the second being “Poverty stricken village PV farm” and the third one is “Family sunshine farm” .

Born in the countryside, Wang Baixing is attached to the land. He invested heavily in research and development to tap the potential of land. In these agricultural PV projects, Wang Baixing took innovative moves to lift the module mount to over 4 meters above ground and expand the space between PV module supports to more than 10 meters. Single panel installation, tilt adjustments and similar measures enabled penetration rates to reach more than 70% beneath the module where rice, wheat and other food crops can be mechanically cultivated. It was an exemplary approach to mechanized PV agriculture.

光伏扶贫让阳光事业更灿烂

2015-2017年，中利开创性地推出了三代全新模 式的农业光伏扶贫项目：第一代“ 智能光伏+科 技农业 、第二代” 贫困村光伏农场 、第三 代“家庭阳光农场” 。

农村出身的王柏兴对土地有一种特殊的情感，为 了使土地得到充分运用，不惜每年投入大量资金 进行技术研发。在开发农业光伏项目过程中，王 柏兴创新性地把组件架设高度抬高到4米以上，光 伏支架桩距跨度拓宽到10米，并通过组件单板安 装、调整组件倾斜度等技术使得组件板下面的太 阳光照率达到70%以上，成功实现了水稻、小麦 等粮食作物在组件下的机械化耕种，开启了光伏 农业机械化的先河。

From then on Zhongli had furthered its efforts in PV poverty alleviation. In the past few years, Zhongli built 370MW first generation “Smart PV + technological agriculture” demonstration bases in Qinghai, Ningxia, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces, lifting more than 13,000 poor families in over twenty impoverished villages out of poverty.

The second generation “Poverty-stricken village PV farm” poverty alleviation program had helped 43 poverty-stricken counties across the country to shake off poverty, benefitting over 440,000 people. Zhongli received numerous awards as a result, including Global Top 500 New Energy Innovation Enterprises, China Energy Industry Poverty Alleviation Innovation Award, China Energy Enterprise Innovation Responsibility Award and China Energy Project Innovation Award.

When asked why he dedicated himself to PV poverty alleviation, Wang baoxing’s reply was always as follows.

I am a son of my mother, and also of the peasant.” Being a child, he barely survived for lack of food. At that time, there were no poverty alleviation programs in place. He did hope that someone could come to their rescue, even if only with a few pounds of rice. When he grew up to be a capable entrepreneur, Wang Baixing lived up to his initial commitments, the very incentive prompting Zhongli to actively participate in PV poverty alleviation.

PV poverty alleviation program had become a new way for poverty alleviation in rural China, being listed as one of the top ten poverty alleviation programs by the State Council Office for Poverty Alleviation. Wang Baixing predicted that PV poverty alleviation would remain to be a promising sector in the next three years. Zhongli planned to build “Poverty stricken village PV farm” for 300 impoverished counties and more than 25,000 poor villages by the end of 2019, benefiting a total of over 3 million people.

Wang Baixing was beginning a new round of strategic planning for the third ten years now.

Being a newcomer in the new energy vehicles and power batteries sector, Zhongli announced its plan in February this year to acquire shares worth around 10 billion yuan from Shenzhen BAK Battery limited company. As the crucial components of new energy vehicle, power batteries have very promising market prospects.

ET Energy Launches 31.6 MWp of Clustered Solar Projects in Chile ET Energy, a global leading clean energy developer and operator, announces that it has started construction of two solar projects in Chile. These two projects are part of a larger portfolio of ten projects totaling 31.6 MWp, which are developed by ET Energy under Chile’s Program for Distributed Energy (PMGD). A major attraction of PMGD projects is that they suffer from fewer development and distribution challenges than large scale projects.

These two projects are located in the 6th Region of Chile south of Santiago. Each project is 3.168 MWp, provided by 9,600 polycrystalline panels mounted on singleaxis trackers. Construction is expected to be finished within 4 months. Four additional projects of similar characteristics will initiate construction in the coming weeks. These projects will create jobs during construction, and inject clean, renewable energy into the national grid, providing electricity to consumers in the area.

The Five Stages of Layoff in Engineering Layoffs suck, everyone knows it. Whether you’ve been through it before, or you’ve been fortunate enough to steer your own career destiny. Right now, the oil and gas industry is going through an unprecedented period of layoffs. Between November 2014 and June 2016, an estimated 350,000 oilfield jobs have been lost worldwide.

vice presidents, and higher ups first announce that a layoff is coming, you feel vindicated.

You tell yourself: ‘I knew it. The company has been overstaffed. There’s not enough work for everyone. I’ve been saying it for months now.

These bosses have had their heads up their asses. I called it before everyone else.’ You were right! And it feels good to be right!

Whenever layoffs take place, the workforce on the chopping block goes through a wide range of emotions. Depending on individual circumstances, some of these emotions may resonate more than others. The Kübler-Ross model describes The Five Stages of Grief that one experiences after tragedy. As an engineer having gone through three rounds of layoffs in the last year and a half, I’ve created the Oil & Gas Firing Model, or The Five Stages of Layoff.

2. Anger

1. Vindication The first emotion. When you’re sitting in a corporate town hall meeting and your bosses, 24

After the high of vindication wears off, the last positive thoughts disappear. Now you’re pissed. The downward spiral of anger takes over your thoughts: If you knew things were this bad, why didn’t the company foresee any of this? How could the higher ups not have prepared for this downside? It is the oil and gas industry for God’s sake! Why are they so shortsided and ignorant? If they fire me, I’ll throw a bigger temper tantrum than my 2-year-old as they escort me kicking and screaming out of here.

You’re not ready for change.

You’ve spent so much time here, and sadly, it feels like it’s all for naught…

5. Acceptance

3. Fear Once your anger subsides, you begin to think more rationally. Your feelings of anger are quickly replaced by pangs of fear. You become afraid. Afraid for your livelihood, your career prospects, your paycheck, your family, your kids and loved ones. You realize all the little things you take for granted in your daily life.

You imagine all the things you won’t be able to afford if you’re laid off. You run different scenarios and options through your mind, and none of them seem as good as your current situation. What will you do if the office grim reaper knocks on your door? Your life as you know it is OVER! You picture yourself begging on the street corner or living in your van, never able to find work again.

to lose their potency. Maybe things won’t be that bad if you lose your job. You’ll be ok.

This isn’t the end of the world.

Life will go on, right? Wait, what are you feeling now?

Sadness? There is a gray cloud following you around your cubicle. This sucks.

You can’t believe that this is actually happening. What about all your work friends?

Will they still be your friends if one or all of you are laid off?

What about your awesome 401k and health plan you’ve had for so long? You’re going to miss all the perks that you’ve taken for granted.

So much is going to change.

All stages of emotion end in acceptance, and layoffs are no different. You will be ok. Life will go on. There’s a chance life might even get better! Whatever thoughts manifest in your mind will become your reality. If you keep your head up, think positive thoughts, and make the most of your contacts and circumstances, new opportunities will present themselves. Although your company really screwed the pooch, take this moment as a learning experience. Put yourself in a new situation that’s even better than before.

New jobs can be a pain especially if you’re still easing in. Here are some tips on how you can survive your first week at your new workplace.

Whether it’s your first, second, or sixth job, easing in can be quite painful and overwhelming. While the job can still be the same, your workplace, coworkers, and even your boss would definitely be different. Before you know it, a whole stack of new projects would also come your way, and you’re tasked to complete it with as little training as possible.

Switching careers, from planning to designing, or from designing to product management, all has its own overwhelming factors. They suddenly expect you to create a blueprint or a draft of a new project without so much as a how-to or even a training manual to get you by. If you get buried in all of your tasks, you won’t last very long. Having the right mindset to overcome all these obstacles would allow you to survive, and even last long in your chosen field.

Discomfort can be a good thing You may have already been used to your previous job. You knew how to fix everything. But sometimes, this sense of easiness that your tasks provides is your own bane. Doing easy things over and over will get you bored in the long run. Now let’s move on to your new job. You don’t know what you’re doing, and you’re probably all over the place. But this kind of challenge is exactly what you need to move forward in your career. No one grows doing easy things. Everyone needs a little hardship every now and then.

Learn to accept help In your previous job, you may not have needed help in finishing your tasks. But now that you’re someplace new, it’s okay to ask for a bit of help. Avoid doing things without asking. If your coworkers or your manager seem irritated by your questions, ask them to point you to a resource you could study yourself. It’s not going to be hard all the time You have to accept that your first steps would be hard. It’s like getting your first scratches while learning how to ride a bike. After a while, you’ll gradually master what you’re doing, and soon enough, you’ll be breezing through everything.

He Yisha Joins Hands With Women Leaders In The Renewable Energy Sector To Create An Alliance For And By Women The founding ceremony of Women in Renewables Asia (WiRA) came to a successful close in Shanghai on July 2. WiRA is an alliance that helps women develop their independence and self-reliance and was jointly launched and sponsored by He Yisha, Unisun Energy Group chairwoman, in concert with 13 women leaders in the alternative and renewable energy sector.

ZNShine Solar Wins Bid to Supply PV Modules to India’s BHEL ZNShine Solar, a leading global photovoltaic (PV) solutions supplier on China’s National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ), has won the bid to provide 37.5MW of PV modules to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), India’s largest power generation equipment manufacturer. The deal makes ZNShine Solar the first overseas module supplier to win contract with BHEL. It also represents a critical step for ZNShine Solar as it moves to expand its presence in the India market.

The reason that ZNShine was able to stand

out among many local competitors during the bidding is owing to its high-quality products, customized local services, as well as ZNShine’s newly developed graphene-coating (nano technology) solar modules. Graphenecoating technology has self-cleaning property.

According to the contract ,10% of the shipment will be graphene-coating solar panel and all deliveries will be made by October.

There is a fine line between what engineers say and what engineers mean.

Engineers are also liars. There’s no denying that. Although not necessarily compulsive liars, engineers at times have to do the necessary evil of lying and make their way out of it without ever proven wrong. It’s an inherent skill to survive from engineering school to the profession, and doesn’t really affect the credibility of the engineer when the lies are concealed just right.

There is a fine line between what engineers say and what engineers mean. This line separates the truth and the cover-up. Most of the time, it just works.

Here are some of those laughable lines that engineers say but don’t actually mean it: What Engineers Say: Developed after years of intensive research.

What Engineers Mean: It was discovered by accident.

It is understandable that in a field like 36

The truth hurts. Sometimes it is just inconvenient. This transcends to our engineering careers as well which are filled with misconceptions. Whether or not we accept them, they are there to speak of the realities of life – they are the truth, after all.

Most budding engineers think that the profession is as easy as how older engineers make it appear. But those who are already at the top of their engineering professions will agree with me on the following inconvenient truths: 1. Almost every engineer started from the bottom. It doesn’t matter if you think you deserve to be at the top, we all start at the lowest rank.

2. It’s not enough that you have passed the licensure or professional exam. There’s more to engineering than knowing them all in theory.

3. Engineering is and will always be incorporated in your life that day you started working as one. There is no escape.

4. Professional growth as an engineer might be uncomfortable at times. You need to overcome such discomfort.

5. You don’t always get everything you want in just one job. There will always be a tradeoff.

6. If you really want to become successful as an engineer, you need to have sustained effort and deliberate action. Dreams don’t come to you, you chase after them.

7. It usually takes 3 to 6 months before you can get the job as an engineer. Job search doesn’t happen overnight.

8. Once you find yourself jumping into a lot of jobs already, you might have the problem, not the job.

9. Invest in yourself and in your career. If you can’t do that, why would any company do?

Avoid thinking that you should be saving your paid timeoffs for scenarios that have a fat chance of happening. You’re not a squirrel saving food for a rainy day. It’s either you use the leaves now and enjoy yourself, or end up not using them later and losing them forever. It’s healthy to save some for expected events, but if you’re not expecting anything them, why save them?

Taking time off of work Work is good, it gives you money, but don’t think you can’t take vacation leaves because there’s a huge amount of it to be done.

Think back on yourself. Do you have bad management skills or is there just too much of work to tackle? If your answer is the former, take the time off, you’ll have more time to think about how you can boost productivity during off time. However, if you answered the latter, you need to talk to your manager.

Everyone deserves a time off. If for some reason a leave can’t be done due to the amount of work present, there’s something definitely wrong with your work environment.

Stop thinking that vacations are expensive Most people think that vacations are not worth it. Yeah you get paid to be off from work, but the money you’d have to spend to go on vacation might be even more than what you get. This is not always true. There are a lot of ways to get your vacation expenses cheaper like finding a place where you can stay with friends, or planning a smaller scale trip. If all else fails, staycations are also a good way to spend your quality time.

What To Do the Night Before Starting Your New Engineering Job It’s always important to prepare for a special day, even if it’s your first day in your engineering job.

The morning of your first day could be overwhelming as you try to become a sponge and soak everything you learn throughout the whole day. So help yourself by preparing what you can ahead of time.

Here are some tips you should do the night before starting your new engineering job.

Pick out your favorite outfit.

Be prepared for your office pitch You’ll be meeting with a lot of people for the first day, so be prepared with more than just “it’s so nice to meet you.” Think of a couple of conversations starters to avoid awkward first meetings.

You’ll be dealing with a lot of new things for that day–which could be stressful and overwhelming. The last thing you want is to be limping because of blisters from your new shoes as you walk behind your supervisor when he/she tours you around the company grounds.

Before going to bed the night before your first day, take a few minutes to remember why you accepted this job. Whatever your motivation it may be, take note why you took this job in the first place. Plan your daily activities

Most of the time, your current job isn’t where you’d exactly want to be. But taking the next step in your career is not the easiest thing to do. That’s why a lot of engineers struggle with what they have now, scared to move forward since it might mean the end of what they have today. It’s like living inside your comfort zone.

Once you get used to living comfortably, you tend to not take any risks, even if it means climbing the career ladder.

You can ask yourself some quick questions to see where you’d want to be career-wise. This is a simple exercise for you to envision what kind of role you’d want to be playing, and if it would mean you having to sacrifice what you have right now. Try to think how your day would be, what your activities for the day would entail, what kind of work would you be doing, where would you be working, and what kind of people would be working with you. Image training related to your future goals can help you visualize what next steps you need to take.

Use a ‘Happiness Rating’ When you’re burned out, it might not just be due to you working long hours. If you’re truly doing what you like, then it wouldn’t be a burden. Take a look at what you’re doing now and place happiness ratings on them.

This could be a simple scale of 1 to 10 or a ranking of 1 to 5 stars, it’s your rating chart.

If there are no projects that are hard enough for your A-team to handle, try creating constraints to keep them challenged. Ask them what they would do to finish a 12-month project in 9 months or less and what they would do

differently to achieve it. You can also ask them how things would still run smoothly even if they’re going to be away for a specific time period. Simple time-based issues like these could bring about new ideas for your workers to think of

Budget If your team is really at the top of their game, they would know how money revolves around your business. Keep them engaged by asking them how they would achieve the simplest and cheapest solution to any problems they may encounter. Ask your managers how they would get the best team if they only have 75% of their current budget. Again, the point is to keep them engaged and thinking.

Expertise This is simple, if they can change how a project would flow with their expertise, you wouldn’t

know unless you ask. Ask your key players what they would do if they were the CEO, how would they run things with their expertise. For your managers, ask them how they would manage a team of entirely new people and how they would still be able to finish a quality project.

Sell their ideas Even if you know how good your people are, test them by having them ‘sell’ their ideas to you or your board. It’s easy to say “yes” when you already know what the employee is capable of. But let them convince you by asking different questions like: how would you convince a 10-year old about your idea, or how would you explain it to someone who doesn’t speak english? Keeping their brains moving keeps them challenged and for hard workers, motivated to continue working at your company.
