lot of countries in the world are still adjusting to the coronavirus pandemic by hunkering down and social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19, more and more research and statistics are being made more accessible for the public to study themselves. Many of the research implies that the coronavirus pandemic will inevitably die down sooner or later and will pave the way for the next generation to recreate a better world. For employers in the green renewables industry, this is absolutely possible, as more and more people are signing up to join movements and organizations that are proactive in bettering the world we live in. Employment opportunities are an integral deliberation in strategic planning if a region wants low-carbon economic growth. The extensive acquisition of renewable energy technologies paves the way for employment opportunities up and down the supply chain. All over the world, the sector employed 11M people right before 2019, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Pushing for a renewablebased energy transformation, the findings say, is a chance to hit international climate goals while improving economic growth, creating millions of 4

One reason why is the industry’s newfound inclusivity. Women and POCs, among other groups, are being given the credit they deserve. There is less bias towards these groups and the industry higher-ups are focusing on the skills and abilities the members of the industry are bringing to the table.

To conclude, UNEP climate change expert Niklas Hagelberg has this to say about the industry: “Renewable energy provides an opportunity for `building back better’, creating green jobs, facilitating the transition to carbon neutral economies, and protecting ourselves from future global threats, including pandemics... Humanity depends on action now for a resilient and sustainable future.”

A

s everyone around the globe adjusts to the COVID-19 pandemic, medical professionals, frontliners, and healthcare workers are doing everything in their power to help others and keep themselves protected from the virus at the same time. This is a mountain of a challenge, seeing as the virus has skyrocketed to about 7 million worldwide cases. The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in an emphasized use for mobile robotics and telemedicine practices i.e. technologies to successfully monitor, disinfect, surveille, handle, and deliver materials while still socially and physically distancing. However, while these types of technology do exist, they are separate gadgets. In other words, there still is no “one stop solution� or master-technology that boasts having multiple capabilities. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) energy and climate expert Mark Radka even says “Post COVID-19 fiscal stimulus packages provide an opportunity for initiating a transformational and green recovery with the creation of green jobs,” The IRENA study called Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review 2019 has found that the cumulative global Gross Domestic Product could be boosted by transforming the energy system. This could hypothetically result in gains above business-as-usual by US$ 98 trillion between now and 2050. It would quadruple renewable energy jobs to 42M, an expansion in employment in energy efficiency to 21M, and add 15M in system flexibility. Employment remains intensive in some countries—with Brazil, China, India, the United States, and members of the European Union in the lead—but the increasingly diverse geographic footprint of energy-generation capacities and, to a lesser degree, assembly and manufacturing plants, has created jobs in a rising number of countries. 26


Solar photovoltaic—the top employer solar photovoltaic technology systems remained the top employers among renewable energy technologies in 2018, accounting for a third of the sector’s workflow. Asia hosted over 3M PV jobs. Rising output boosted biofuel jobs up 6% to 2.M. Brazil, Colombia, and Southeast Asia have labour-intensive supply chains, juxtaposed to operations in the United States and the European Union, which are far more mechanized. Employment in wind power supports 1.2M jobs. Employment is also required to be inclusive, providing opportunities for people with different talents and skills, and ensuring that no population group, such as women or people of color, is systematically excluded.

Widening the talent pool The worldwide transition to renewables necessitates a wide array of skills—technical, business, administrative, economic and legal, among many others. Thus, widening the talent pool is an absolute must. The industry is required to hire skilled individuals, women included. The report discovered that because of its multidisciplinary dimension, the renewable energy field appeals to women in ways that the fossil fuel, gas, and oil industries do not. Women currently represent 32% of the renewable energy workforce, substantially higher than the 22% average reported for the global oil and gas industry. Overcoming gender gaps, or even ethnic gaps for that matter, in electricity access advances several Sustainable Development Goals. Access to clean, affordable, renewable energy also lowers barriers to women’s market employment (IEA, IRENA, UNSD, WB, WHO, 2019). EWEC receives bids for the world’s largest solar power plant project in the Al Dhafra region in Abu Dhabi The plant is expected to be almost double the size of EWEC’s ‘Noor Abu Dhabi’ solar plant - the current largest operational single-site Solar PV plant in the world

T

he Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) and a leading company in the integrated coordination of planning, purchasing and supply of water and electricity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and beyond, has received bids for its 2 GW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer (IPP) project, to be located in the Al Dhafra region in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. The project tender included the financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the solar plant, including installation of solar PV modules, inverters, connection to the transmission network and associated facilities. Expected to cover an area of 20 square kilometers, the plant will be the world’s largest solar PV IPP project, and provide up to 110,000 households across the UAE with electricity. It will be almost double the size of EWEC’s approximately 1.2 GW ‘Noor Abu Dhabi’ solar plant - the current largest operational singleproject solar PV plant in the world, which commenced its commercial operation back in April 2019.

Once operational, the plant will lift Abu Dhabi’s solar power capacity to around 3.2 GW, further reducing the emirate’s CO2 emissions by more than 1.6 million metric tons per year - equal to removing around 330,000 cars from the road - improving efficiency and driving sustainability, while catering for the growth in demand across the UAE. As part of the tendering process issued last year, an optional bid for significant battery storage was allowed and has resulted in substantial market interest. This added option provided an opportunity to build on the existing 108 MW battery capacity that can last for up to six hours, already operational in Abu Dhabi’s current electricity storage system. Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said: “We are delighted to have received positive responses from such internationally recognised entities, demonstrating the utmost confidence in Abu Dhabi’s competitive economy. This year, EWEC has already delivered the world’s current largest single-site solar PV project, Noor Abu Dhabi, on time and on budget. We continue to deliver on our ambitious sustainable generation program, and this new plant is integral to our strategic plan to deliver on the clean energy mix outlined by the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.” EWEC received 48 expressions of interest from potential bidders for the plant earlier this year, a testament of the trust that international investors have in Abu Dhabi. Out of these expressions of interest, 24 qualified to bid for the project after submitting Statements of Qualification. The technical bid opening was attended by a number of EWEC’s leadership team and key stakeholders from across the Water and Electricity sector. 43

ACWA Power Awarded 250 MW Solar Project

A

CWA Power and Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), the state-owned electricity producer, and the Ministry of Finance signed a Letter of Intent on the 15th of October 2019. The entities will proceed to sign a long-term power purchase agreement for the projects at USD 2.52 cents/kWh over a time span of 20 years before the end of 2019. Canadian Solar Secures 30 MWp in Japan’s 4th Solar Auction

anadian Solar Inc. The First Country To Send Covid-19 Test Results by WhatsApp & FB Messenger

ahrain has become the first country in the world to offer COVID-19 test results by WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The announcement comes as governments across the globe experiment with launching their own official chat channels, including Singapore, New Zealand and the World Health Organisation. Bahrain’s results service, which is available in English and Arabic, has been launched by the Kingdom’s Ministry of Health as part of efforts to combat the ongoing global health crisis. The chatbot delivers up-to-date information on the spread of the Coronavirus and provides direct links to YouTube guidance videos as well as the country’s official COVID-19 Be Aware app. The free chat service has been built using the WhatsApp Business API and Infobip’s global communication platform to provide critical information to citizens and residents. Dr Waleed Al Manea, from Bahrain’s Health Ministry, said: “We are working to reach a bigger and wider community in our health efforts to combat the spread of Covid-19.” As global lockdowns begin to lift, Bahrain – one of the first countries in the world to loosen restrictions on movement – is taking a series of steps to prepare for the next phase of the crisis. he Emirates Water and Electricity Company and ACWA Power, a global leader in water desalination and power generation, have signed the water purchase agreement, for the world’s largest sea water reverse osmosis desalination plant to be constructed at Taweelah Power and Water Complex, 50 km north of Abu Dhabi. The Taweelah IWP will be the first stand-alone independent water project in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Water and Electricity Company had awarded the project to ACWA Power in January 2019. The tariff offered by ACWA Power for the Al Taweelah IWP is the lowest achieved to date in the world for desalinated water. The project, when constructed, will also set another world record by

Advanced Stadium Cooling: Innovative Technology Coming to the Qatar World Cup Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure

T

he 2018 World Cup marked the World Cup debut of using the Video Assistant Referee, also known as VAR, as the newest technological innovation coming to the stadiums. According to FIFA, the VAR system had a success rate of 99.3 percent and many football analysts have praised the introduction of VAR. In their opinion, the World Cup was a perfect example of how technology can work well for football, although it did show that there are some risks involved in relying on the technology. In 2022, when the World Cup will be played in Qatar, a newer and bigger technical innovation will come to the stadiums. All host stadiums will be air-conditioned, making it doable to organize the World Cup in a country with 70

extreme heats. Since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host in December 2010, many have been critical of the controversial choice wondering how an event like the World Cup could be organized in the desert. In only one generation, Qatar has transformed from a handful of poor fishing villages into the richest country per capita in the world. Now, Qatar is taking on one of the biggest sports events the world has to offer. With temperatures averaging 42 degrees Celsius in summer, the decision was made to move the dates of the World Cup to winter, when temperatures around 30 degrees are to be expected. This is the reason why the stadiums will have air-conditioning installed, in order to bring down the temperature to about 20 degrees on the pitch and 23 degrees in the stands. The innovation being trialed in Qatar involves a system where cold air is being pumped into stadiums through a system powered by chilled water, which is the transformed into a cold mist after passing through cooling nozzles. They way it works is that the platform of the stadium is used to defend it against the infiltration of warm wind. This means the stadium is a barrier that is basically containing a cold bubble inside. The technology works by maintaining the cold bubble for as long as necessary in order for people to watch the game, and so the players are comfortable enough to play their game. The Al Wakrah Stadium also has a roof that can be opened and a seating-bowl cooling system to allow football to be played all-year round. At Al Wakrah Stadium, they are using an air circulation technique, which means some of the air is drawn back, cooled again and then pushed back to the supporters and players. The cooling technology for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has been a crucial part since the country announced its bid for the tournament in 2009. Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure. For example, the Khalifa International Stadium is a big stadium with an athletics track which makes it so an unconventional treatment is needed. At Khalifa, fresh air is taken and pushed to the people. Moreover, a new line

of under-seat diffusers has been developed in order to deliver the air to fans in a gentle manner. No doubt, Qatar wants to show itself to the world, building the most advanced stadiums that ever have been built. The stadiums are also built so close to each other, fans could actually attend more than one game per day. The longest distance between two venues is just 55km, a short journey that will be seamless thanks to an advanced underground railway system.
