onths after the initial outbreak, COVID-19 still plagues the world, forcing the people to stay indoors and distance themselves from the company of others. Dubai Airports Bans Single Use Plastics Change is coming to the world of air travel.

S

ingle Use Plastics like cutlery, drinking straws, take-away food packaging and polythene bags are banned from cafés, restaurants and shops at the world’s busiest international airport.

The reason for this is Dubai Airports’ pledge in 2019 to ban all single-use plastic.

With 90 million passengers passing through Dubai’s two airports – DXB and DWC – every year, consuming tens of thousands of plastic items from straws to water bottles to coffee lids on a daily basis – the plastic-free initiative presents a huge logistical challenge to the management team and to every business in their supply chain.

But with the UAE alone producing around 7 billion tonnes of Single Use Plastics waste every year - it’s a challenge they fully intend to meet, rolling out the ban with a phased approach with the aim for completion scheduled by the end of the 2020.

Pressure is growing for corporations and individuals to act more responsibly and adopt more sustainable practices to fight against Single Use Plastics pollution and preserve marine life. The changes happening on such a huge scale as a result of Dubai Airports’ ban could soon become a template for other major transportation hubs and organisations around the world to follow.

Already 95% of Dubai Airports’ commercial partners have signed the pledge to stop using disposable plastic in their outlets.

Notable amongst them is Costa Coffee which has committed to replacing its Single Use Plastics Cups with a 100% renewable, plant-based “smart” cup. The coffee giant sells over 2.6 million cups of coffee in Dubai’s airports a year – that alone has a great impact on change. This will be followed later next year by the introduction of a coffee cup lid made entirely from wood and paper fibre instead of single-use plastic.

Pret a Manger, McDonalds and Giraffe are also on board, alongside around 290 other retail and F&B outlets, and have started the process of eliminating consumer-facing plastic items from their concessions and replacing them with more sustainable alternatives in just 6 months.

New research commissioned by Dubai Airports highlights widespread public support for recycling initiatives.

In the UAE, over half (52%) of air travellers say they carry a reusable water bottle, and almost 1 in 2 (49%) say they will choose to eat in a restaurant to avoid plastic packaging and almost a third (32%) say they don’t buy items at the airport containing non-recyclable materials.

But it is clear that passengers feel airports could be doing more on the issue with 92% saying that they need to be more vocal about what they are doing to recycle waste.

LS Power Advances Renewable Energy Goals with Ravenswood Battery Energy Storage Project

N

ew York has taken a significant step toward achieving its Clean Energy goals with the Public Service Commission’s (PSC) key approval for a major energy storage project proposed for New York City.

On October 17, 2019, the PSC granted a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) for LS Power’s proposed 316-megawatt battery energy storage project at the Ravenswood Generating Station in Long Island City. Additionally, the Ravenswood storage project was accepted in the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) 2019 interconnection facility study process, and is therefore well positioned to be able to meet a 2022 in-service requirement.

Agency in July 2019, utility-scale battery energy storage capacity in the U.S. has more than quadrupled from the end of 2014 (214 MW) through March 2019 (899 MW). LS Power has been at the forefront of this progress, and currently has a series of projects ranging from 40 MW to 250 MW in California, both operating and under construction/development.

When fully constructed, the Ravenswood battery energy storage project will represent over 10% of the state’s ambitious storage goal of 3,000 megawatts by 2030 and mark New York as one of the nation’s leaders in largescale battery storage.

In July 2019, Con Edison issued Request For Proposals for 300 megawatts of battery energy storage following an order from the PSC, with a requirement to be operational by December 31, 2022. Battery energy storage will be increasingly important for New York as it advances toward its Clean Energy Standard, which mandates that, by 2030, seventy percent of New York’s electricity is to come from renewable energy sources.

The New York City Mayor’s Office of Sustainability also voiced its support for the Ravenswood Storage Project, noting in accompanying documents to the project’s July 2019 CPCN petition that its benefits included (i) ensuring reliability, (ii) replacing old fossil fuel peaker units, (iii) enhancing resiliency, and (iv) achieving public policy goals.

As the world emerges from lockdown and racism, businesses, governments and citizens will have to adapt to changes in the way we work, live and play.

How do we ensure that the the engineering workforce is, in turn, educated about racial equality and trained to provide the expectations of the ‘new customer’? A company who has deep values on social issues is one of the vital success in delivering a world-class customer-orientated service. Whether in utilities, power, water, manufacturing, renewables or construction, a valuedriven workforce is a driving force.

Whilst utilising the latest technology and innovations plays into the user experience, so too does the human element of those delivering these frontline services. In short, we need an excellent engineering workforce to deliver an excellent citizen service with deep understanding of diversity, equality and values.

Engineers have a huge part to play.

What we are seeing (protests around the world) is the emergence of a new workforce, not only that has to adapt to the new needs and wants of its country’s citizens but with deep understanding of social justice. Being prepared for the challenges that our society will face requires knowledge of future skills among the workforce of every engineers. Despite the challenges that the regional and global economies will be bracing for in the months ahead, we should not be deterred from our mission.

A new generation of engineers is ready to make an impact in the private sector by serving their countries; our priority is to play our role in helping to bring that into fruition. Ultimately, to do this, in a world of automation, robotics and other innovative forms of technology that will transform our society, we must adopt a growth mindset.

Equipping engineers with the right skills and principles Whilst the DNA of what makes a great employee will still remain (excellent work ethic, positive attitude, fostering racial equality values and skills related to the specific role), in this post-COVID world, the talent that will thrive are those who have built up new skills along the way. Now more than ever there is a focus on communication. Ensuring that we build a future national workforce that has the right skills to communicate effectively across the board is key – from face to face, incorporating new normals of social distancing and face masks, through to sophisticated use of available technology to communicate with people remotely. This is especially important with the fundamental makeup of the workforce changing. Virtual working environments will become more prevalent than ever before, so having a level of discipline, motivation and the ability to navigate and manage workloads effectively in a remote environment is also vital. Simultaneously, there is a need to deliver efficiently and effectively, and on time – because citizens will be no less demanding (or even more post COVID-19) when it comes to their expectations for service.

But it’s not just about the pandemic or protests, a focus on engineers’ skills and technical knowhow is very much embedded in the core DNA of our culture and it is a key component of our strategy. The pandemic and social unrest has only made it all the more obvious that we need to have a value-driven purpose and right skillset that is able to deliver to international principledcentered leadership. By doing so, we can provide our future engineers and scientists with the right training and soft skills so that they are moved into leadership and management roles, that is socially just, equal and fair. This is where they can focus on the future and manage the moral transformation that we are going through, just like the rest of the world.

Racial Equality at School Engineering companies should be knocking at the doors of the biggest regional universities so that all of us can start our assessments, to recruit and find the brightest talent that we can support on their career journey of tomorrow. TALK ABOUT IT Children easily pick up on conversations and uncertainty parents might be experiencing. As a result, this can lead to changes in a child’s behaviour, schooling and overall wellbeing. It is important to regulate the content that is seen on 68

the news and discussed during phone conversations with friends and family.

Try to take those conversations away from children to help reduce unnecessary worry. Talk to children about any fears or worries they might have and validate their feelings by addressing any questions that come up. During this time especially, it is important to create an honest and calm space for children to address concerns.

TRY TO STICK TO A ROUTINE Before any routine, it is important to take a step back and consider how easy it will be to stick to.

Keeping a normal consistent routine for young children can be a stress reliever. To ensure a sense of normality for children, plan a routine that mimics a normal day at school or nursery by incorporating playtime, arts and crafts, fun activities that involve other family members and reading. When planning a schedule, it is important to remember that things do not always go to plan, so try not to live by the clock and be flexible to adapt to changes when needed.

The dos and don’ts of maintaining hygiene, especially when it comes to face masks, is of utmost importance.

Using the same cloth mask daily without cleaning it will not shield you from the virus and may actually have the opposite effect.

Here are six key tips for maintaining the effectiveness of your face masks:

How often do you need to wash your face mask?

Your face mask should be washed regularly. We cannot stress on that enough. The virus may stay active on fabric for a long period of time, which makes it absolutely necessary to wash your face mask at least once a day. If you suspect that someone you have been in close contact with is infected, you should put the mask to wash immediately and use a fresh one. Apart from the virus, the masks also tend to collect any sweat, oil or makeup from skin, which may also affect your health.

What fabric is suitable for a face mask?

Cotton fabric is the perfect material for a face mask. With an ideal thread count of about 200 with up to three layers of fabric, this material is effective in filtering out the virus as well as blocking any pathogens from entering. With the strict protocol of wearing the face mask while on the move, it is essential to be comfortable with your face mask and the cotton fabric provides the right amount of breathability. It is also recommended to use white color masks that can be washed in higher temperatures.

How should you handle your face mask after use?

Upon returning home, we recommend that the first thing you do is take off your mask carefully and place it in the laundry bin until you can wash it. You may opt to leave it in the bin for 24 hours or more in quarantine, which is known to allow the virus to decay. Do not let the mask come into contact with any other family member.

How can you disinfect cloth masks?

A machine wash at a high temperature with quality detergents is good enough to kill the virus. However, if you want to avoid running a machine load just for a single mask, you can also toss in your clothing items that you wore to step-out as well. If you prefer to hand-wash your mask, ensure that you get into every inch of the mask and clean it using the correct amount of chemical. Additionally, soaking the mask in hot water for 10-minutes and then rinsing it thoroughly, will also help to remove all the pathogens. Avoid using bleach completely as the constant smell can cause nausea and headaches.

What is the appropriate temperature to wash a face mask?

Viruses cannot withstand high temperatures, therefore, washing face masks at a temperature of more than 60 degrees help disinfect the mask. Since fabrics with dark colors fade after a couple of washed at high temperatures, it is advisable to make or buy the fabric mask in lighter shades.

How should a face mask be dried?

After washing your mask, it is best to dry it at a high temperature since heat also sanitizes the mask. For masks with a plastic filter and valve, you will need to be extra careful and air-dry or sun-dry them. A hairdryer can also be used as an easy and effective dryer. Sunlight is another excellent natural sanitizing agent. Since the starting temperature of an average household iron is 140 degrees Celsius, ironing the mask post-drying will provide an added measure to ensure that the virus is completely eliminated.

• According to Pinsent Masons, having an agile strategy and expert counsel is key to taking advantage of UAE’s unique business opportunities – even during these unprecedented times Uncertainty due to ambiguous laws has been identified as the top regulatory challenge facing business leaders in the UAE – that’s according to a new report “The Making of an Investment Powerhouse: The Future of the UAE’s Regulatory Framework” by international law firm Pinsent Masons. study combines the results of a cross-sector survey, conducted prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, with in-depth, one-to-one interviews with leading experts from the energy, financial services, infrastructure, real estate and technology sectors to better understand perceived barriers to success in the market.

Although a number of sector-specific issues were highlighted in the report, 40 per cent of those surveyed stated that ambiguous laws present their number one challenge. The other two barriers identified in the study are foreign ownership restrictions (39%) and employment laws. – particularly the hiring of top talent (29%). The report aims to analyse the evolution of the UAE’s legal framework across the key industries that have been instrumental to the nation’s growth and offer expert counsel on how businesses can navigate existing challenges and take full advantage of the bountiful opportunities that exist in this market.

Although ambiguous regulations can provide uncertainty for businesses, Pinsent Masons recommends that businesses develop a collaborative and agile strategy that can be quickly amended if new regulations are introduced. In sectors such as technology, uncertainty can actually be an advantage as it enables companies to think creatively and provides the flexibility to innovate and expand quickly – which can be tricky in markets that are heavily regulated.

Whilst some of the challenges identified in the report are certainly unique to the UAE and the Middle East, many are caused by globalisation effect on the business environment.

The report reveals the different levels of support required by each sector.

• 89% of infrastructure and 85% of energy leaders believe that the UAE represents the ‘gold standard’ in terms of regulation, compared to other jurisdictions globally.

Interestingly, 97% of all of those surveyed believe the country to be either “extremely business friendly” or “somewhat business friendly”; this highlights the strength of the UAE’s regulatory framework overall. Workman commented: “ Although challenges exist, the report highlights that business confidence is strong and this will be instrumental in ensuring the UAE’s recovery post Covid-19.
