With the rapid arrival of innovations and technological advancements, sustainability and continuous research and study for more efficient resources are the challenges faced by this growing industry. As these technologies have given birth to devices and facilities, they have shown great help to communities and have certainly become a necessity for people.

But this need for technology has also been a picture of great danger to the world we live in. Environmental pollution, ecological systems disturbances, depletion of natural resources and climatic changes resulting from global warming are brought by the fruits of it. Technology is significant in development and has offered productivity to satisfy human needs.

However, uncontrolled technology impacts the environment negatively.

The wastes coming from a lot of buildings, institutions, and factories are throwing so much harm to the life of natural resources, and to the lives of people. Aside from these defects is the impact on the natural energies that can be put into nothing and uselessness due to the deadly releases of technology.

Fortunately, as research and study aim to help create sustainable facilities management and support, their pursuit have also stepped up to help provide safe surroundings for the communities.

10 Ways Engineers Can Improve Their Management Skills To be an efficient engineer is something but to be an effective engineering manager is another thing! Combining skillful engineering prowess while leading highly technical teams, engineering managers can actually be considered super humans with great powers— but of course, with great responsibilities as well.

Now, here are tips on how engineers can improve their management skills: 1. Set realistic goals and let them know it What is the purpose of your company? What are the goals you/they need to meet? How do you envision your team or the company 10 years from now?

Let your team know the clear goal you aim for the company. Give them also a chance to think and engage with these goals. In this way, they will envision their roles and responsibilities and how their works little or big can contribute as a whole.

To do list: • Conduct a special meeting to discuss on these goals.

• Hand them a copy after the meeting.

• Have it printed and place it where everybody can see it.

2. Before ‘too operational’, be relational Do you know your people well? Do you know what motivates them?

Management skills do not stop on being ‘too operational’, you must possess a relational attitude towards your people. Reminder, you can’t be relational with someone you don’t know, so it really requires you to have shared experiences with them.

To do list: • Allot time to meet them on a regular basis • If possible, have a one-on-one meeting.

• Make them always feel they are part of the company’s success.

• Get company color and company dress code that suits the kind of job you offer.

• Consider to have a company branding as your logo, email addresses, etc.

4. If you get along, others will go along.

How often do you communicate with your team?

Is it too often or too seldom?

How happy is your working environment? Do you take time to have fun?

There is a quote saying, “A team is many voices with a single heart.” It is important to maintain an open and good communication with your people. You will see good engineering managers having an impact to his/her people not only through staying connected but also making sure their people are also able to communicate with them easily.

After all, it’s about meeting at the right frequencies.

Show sense of urgency but always have enough time to relax, chill and laugh at work.

Engineers are not robots, they also have their quirky sides in them. Don’t just enjoy working and improving your company’s work performance, you and your team must also enjoy your company.

To do list: • Keep an eye on them and challenge them • Pay them of what they deserve • Give them new challenges for them to level up 8. Also give priority to low performer employees How do you deal with employees with unsatisfactory work and attitude?

In every company, there is always incompetent employees. Speak up to them as truthfully and kindly as possible. Just as you keep an eye to top performing employees, challenge also the low performers. Train and equip them most of the time, they might just be needing more oil to absorb more heat and run a more effective system. Make it your last option to give up on them or terminate them in the company.

To do list: • Pay attention to them and to their works • Meet them to say how can they improve • Have yourself a time to keep them and a time to let them go 9. Learn your mistakes and admit it When was the last time you made a mistake as

an engineering manager? Do you admit it as your own fault or pointed it to your people?

Think about the mistakes you recently made while completing a project or working with your employees. Write them down, study them and determine what you can do differently the next time you face a similar situation. Engineers are not perfect—everyone has their own chink in the armor.

To do list: • When something bad was brought out during a meeting and you know you are part of that trouble, as an engineer/manager, admit your fault to them.

10. Train yourself to be professional in ALL aspects When dispute over you and your employees rise, how do you react? How do you keep your focus and act professional?

When you discover an issue between you and your employees, find the first reasonable opportunity to address it with them in a professional manner. In this way you can also encourage others to do the same with you.

To do list: • Discuss how delegation of work will be different this time • Empower your team and improve your team’s productivity

Emrill is currently running trials on applications that will take us into the next generation of capability in the region, which means that instead of ‘smart’ buildings we will be creating ‘interactive’ buildings that are able to learn from the environment and the user comfort-points.

As artificial intelligence grows we will be able to implement user recognition capability and environment control that will enable the building to self-adapt based on what it has learned, rather than wait for instruction. We expect to start rolling this technology out soon. The future for Emrill promises to be exciting, and we are always eager to push the boundaries of dynamic technology to keep us right at the forefront of the energy revolution.

Renewable Projects Emrill was at the forefront of the energy revolution in the Middle East with an awardwinning project in the UAE. We ran a pilot project, known as an Energy Performance Contract (EPC), which was the first of its kind in Dubai. We designed, financed and installed the whole project as a turnkey solution.

Electricity cost savings of over 26 per cent were achieved in the first year, which equated to an annual saving of Dh3.5 million. What we learned from this pilot project enabled us to replicate it in other buildings, and we now have over four years’ experience and data to draw from, which is mostly used for modelling and planning purposes. Furthermore, the CO2 reduction on the Dubai pilot project in the first year alone was equivalent to a motorcar driving over one hundred million kilometres, helping Emrill to achieve its own sustainability goals while being good for the planet.

Innovation and Technology The technology and applications we use on building energy efficiency projects are based 18

on sound engineering principles, and we never over-promise or gamble with results.

We start the process with a thorough review of the existing Building Management System, this is the central data point for technical systems and it’s the obvious place to look for opportunities. The rest of the process is a proprietary blend of hardware and software, balancing output and creating/harmonising control loop algorithms, which make the building more intelligent.

Following a feasibility study of existing equipment and their respective operating modes, an Investment Grade Audit is completed. This demonstrates the level of reductions in net energy usage and costs that can be achieved through changes and improvements to Controls, Chillers, Air Handling Units, Heat Recovery Systems, and Building Management and Lighting Systems.

The technical team at Emrill have become experts at analysing this data and developing bespoke and turnkey energy efficiency solutions that meet the needs of all stakeholders, and most importantly ensuring

that we maintain comfort levels for residents or end-users.

Sustainability Extends to Water Conservation Due to its very arid climate, the UAE is one of most water-scarce countries in the world.

Hence, the onus is on facilities management companies such as Emrill to reduce the usage of this precious resource in cleaning techniques and also to reduce unnecessary wastage in community water systems.

Sustainability in the area of water conservation is at the forefront of Emrill’s strategy for the future and is a key objective for the company.

About 20 per cent of the water used in the UAE and further afield is believed to be lost as a result of leakages in community water systems. We believe these losses are mostly avoidable, and are committed to reducing water leakages as much as possible. To achieve this in 2016 Emrill developed the ‘Emrill Community Water Leakage Reduction Programme’ and began testing it on a Dubai

villa master community. By 2017, irrigation leakages had been reduced by 70 per cent, sewerage overflows by over 50 per cent, and system failure rectification times had been cut to less than 24 hours. At the same time, client and residents both reported major improvements in the community’s lake water quality. To put this into everyday terms, the total volume of water saved when compared to the previous year was the equivalent of over 8,100 showers and represented a total cost saving of Dh500,000 to the client. To achieve these results, Emrill invested heavily into specialist technological equipment, including underground leak detection and CCTV equipment, enabling the rapid detection of root cause problems in the sewage network.

I’m very proud of the Emrill technical team for its quick action and innovative solutions that achieved this result, which was acknowledged at a wider industry level by winning ‘Engineering Service Of The Year’ at the Facilities Management Middle East Awards 2018.

Stuart Harrison Biography Early Career I’m originally from the Midlands in the UK and after completing my engineering studies I started my career as an electrical engineer.

My father is an engineer and as a youngster I sometimes spent time with him at work during my summer holidays. I found his job so fascinating that it seemed only natural I would follow his footsteps and pursue a career in engineering. so I made the decision to specialise in electrical engineering and set about securing my first job.

I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had such a great start to my career. The early years saw me working for a major contractor on a mix of private and government contracts, such as UK hospitals and major developments. These projects exposed me to engineering challenges on a worldwide scale. The learning curve was steep and I often had to think on my feet, this gave me a great foundation and understanding of all types technical challenges.

Commitment to Continuous Development According to Warren Buffett: If you’re not spending five hours per week learning, you’re being irresponsible. I tend to agree with this philosophy and live by it as much as possible.

I’ve always been ambitious and keen to learn, so once I had some experience in different types of engineering I started to look further afield and had the opportunity to work all over the UK. This then led to work across Europe, the USA and the Middle East.

The great thing about engineering is you never stop learning. The roles I have taken in my career have seen me managing everything from critical hospital infrastructure to Oil & Gas fields. I’ve also constantly upskilled myself by completing mechanical qualifications along the way, so I’m just as comfortable with HVAC systems as I am with electrical projects.

Focusing on People Management Skills As my career has progressed into senior leadership roles, people management has become a significant part of my job. I have found this aspect hugely enjoyable, which led me to complete an MSc in Management and become a qualified Chartered Manager. I truly believe that every day is an opportunity to learn something new.

Keep calm under pressure When facing a difficult situation, engineers, sometimes, lose their temper. They get tensed and annoyed thus making the scenario even more difficult. But how can you really stay calm if you are facing the circumstance the Thai coach had to get through? Will you have a moment to calm down? For Coach “Ek,” making this move can save lives.

Serving as a custodian in a monk monastery, Coach Ek has acquired expertise in Buddhist

training and meditation practice. He taught the boys to meditate so they could pass the time without stress. When they were found, the rescue divers describe the team to be in good spirits.

It is very easy for a leader to be irritated when a crisis arises but what the coach displayed during those trying times is a good example for everyone who wishes to manage and lead the company excellently despite unwanted conditions.

Own your mistakes The coach knows that he is accountable for what happened to them. JA Solar Supplies Half-Cell Modules for Solar Plant in Africa

JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. This plant marks the first half-cell modules project in Namibia and represents JA Solar’s first application of half-cell modules in utility scale projects.

Compared with conventional modules, JA Solar’s half-cell modules optimize interconnection technology, reduce resistance loss, boost current flow by increasing gaps between cells, resulting in an effective increase in power output.

Additionally, JA Solar’s half-cell module has a better temperature coefficient, which leads to significant output power advantages under high temperature.

Through the optimization of BOM, the ability of resist ultraviolet radiation has also been enhanced. As a result, JA Solar’s half-cellmodules have the ability to perform well in a high-temperature, high-ultraviolet environment.

Hanergy’s Alta Devices Hits the High Spot in Solar Energy with Record Breaking Efficiency Hanergy Thin Film Power Group today announced recently that US’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, one of the world’s three largest renewable energy research organizations, has rated its US- based subsidiary Alta Devices’ single junction GaAs module as the world’s most efficient single-junction solar module. With its record setting 28.9% conversion efficiency, the module can be used to power a range of products from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), electric vehicles to smart sensors that were earlier restricted by low efficiency solar solutions.

The group is relentlessly committed to develop technology with well-timed advancements which is bound to hit the high spot. Notably, Alta Devices first broke the record for GaAs singlejunction cells in 2010 and has since then broken five conversion efficiency records already. The recent one being Alta’s GaAs solar conversion rate of 28.9%, so far the highest efficiency in the world as rated by US’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

With this most recent breakthrough, Hanergy now has two world records - the record for singlejunctionbatteries (28.9%) and for single-junction battery modules (25.1%) which further fortify the company’s position as an undisputed world leader in the field of high-efficiency thin-film solar batteries.
