Renewable energy usage is soaring quickly on a global scale, slowly combating the adverse effects of unsustainable energy and buttressing against the speedy rise of climate change. Wind, solar energy, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass are the most common types of naturally-replenishing, theoretically infinite sources of renewable energy.

While this steadily growing trend is grounds for hope for the planet, the population working in renewable energy faces a number of per8

ils unique to this ever-growing industry. Compared to urban offices, the novelty of working in renewable resources may exacerbate these hazards.

Stumbling, tripping, and colliding into various other equipment is not uncommon for one working in wine. During turbine installation, most especially, one must always be vigilant of their surroundings and take rests when necessary, avoiding fatigue as much as possible. The amount

Being careless when handling and lifting equipment paves multiple ways for related injuries. Inexperienced workers with poor levels of concentration and proper handling suffer from physical traumas that, when ignored, could worsen at an unprecedented rate.

In contrast, height, which is perceived as a major risk factor by the public, is very much controlled. “Sometimes there is an assumption that just because it is very high up in the air it must, by default, be a major risk area. It isn’t, because we have a very good idea of how to control it, the safety systems involved are quite well developed, and we have well-equipped turbines.”

Rose says.

It should then come as no surprise that safety experts are already gearing up to find the best solutions for crisis mitigation in these work sites.

After all, the safety of renewable resource workers should always be the top priority. It is, according to Andy Holt, the Head of Global Projects and Services at GE Renewable Energy, a concern shared amongst all green jobbers in renewable resources. Protecting the 12

professionals in the industry is an interest shared amongst all players within the arena.

Rose states that better safety protocols are being researched and implemented by original equipment manufacturers worldwide.

Safety, protection, and accountability are becoming a harder cornerstone for the OEM’s commercial strategies and communication plans, all the while following through with their promise to improve upon their own safety measures.

With these plans to prevent incidents and crises currently at play, professionals in the renewable energy resource will finally have their second wind.

Proliferating this culture of security in the industry is founded on sharpness of mind and sound mentality. While working in the renewable resource industry is noble in and of itself, Holt is reminding all renewable resource recruits to prioritize their own physical and mental well-beings before the planet’s, because there will always be an Earth to be taken care of.

Part of creating this culture of safety is, surprisingly, the reduction of house and work site rules. According to Rose, an overabundance in house rules is indicative of poor management from the higher-ups and the workers must instead focus on improving individual and collective risk awareness.

clear paths, check up on risk factors, minimize potential threats, and ensure a safe environment before the actual work begins. Rules and regulations will still be present in extremely precarious positions and locations in the industry.

As wind farms move further and further away from populaces and urban areas, the need for proper risk awareness campaigns and management, crisis mitigation, and more streamlined training regimen and lectures, as well as basic training in complementary skills such as first aid and medical proficiencies, for 18

prospects looking into wind and the renewable resource industry.

On-site safety is a target that is ever in motion because no matter how much devising entire industries do, there will always be unforeseen threats and accidents. Despite the fact that surprises lurk around every little corner, anticipating high-risk events and devising strategies and concrete plans of mitigating threats will impact the industry in a grand way.

Duke Energy Renewables’ largest solar project now online in California 150 MW North Rosamond solar project achieves commercial operation

uke Energy Renewables, a subsidiary of Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), today announced that its 150-megawatt (MW) North Rosamond solar project in Kern County, Calif., has begun commercial operation. It is the largest solar project in Duke Energy Renewables’ fleet.

The 150-MW project, which contains over 477,000 solar panels, is located on approximately 1,188 acres outside of Rosamond, Calif., and will power approximately 71,000 homes. The North Rosamond solar project is Duke Energy Renewables’ sixth solar generation facility in Kern County.

The project, which Duke Energy Renewables acquired from a subsidiary of Clearway Energy Group in April 2019, employed as many as 500 individuals during the peak construction period.

The facility’s design, procurement of PV modules, inverters, balance of plant systems and construction of the project were performed by First Solar Electric California’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) subsidiary under a fixed-price EPC agreement for the project.

The U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation, the tax credit division of U.S. Bank; M&T Bank’s Commercial Equipment Finance Group; and The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America provided tax equity financing to the project.

CIT’s Power and Energy group led a consortium of lending institutions that provided construction loan and ITC bridge loan facilities to fund equipment, engineering, construction and other costs needed to achieve final completion of the project.

These facilities will be converted to a single term loan facility that will be used to finance the project over the next 15 years.

Duke Energy is one of the nation’s top renewable energy providers – on track to own or purchase 8,000 megawatts of 23

wind, solar and biomass energy by 2020.

New Survey Reveals 70% of Americans Support Nationwide Solar Panel Mandate on New Homes

A

s we approach the longest day of the year, a new survey reveals American adults are eager to harness the sun’s energy, with 70 percent saying they would support a nationwide mandate requiring solar panels to be installed on all newly built homes. The survey,* conducted by CITE Research on behalf of Vivint Solar (NYSE: VSLR), a leading full-service residential solar provider, also revealed significant others and environmental experts are the most influential when deciding to install residential solar for the good of the

environment, while politicians are the least influential by far.

“California was the first state to pass a solar panel mandate on new homes and it goes into effect in 2020. We’ve seen that state often lead the way in establishing environmental practices nationwide,” said David Bywater, CEO of Vivint Solar, which has installed solar energy systems on more than 160,000 U.S. homes. “We believe more states will make strides to adopt residential solar requirements, and it’s great to see the vast majority of American adults support this,

even at a nationwide mandate level. With nearly a million new single-family homes built annually, if all of them took advantage of solar energy, it would be equivalent to driving 12 billion fewer miles a year or consuming 12 million fewer barrels of oil.”** Among those who support a nationwide solar mandate, 32% said they strongly support it and 38% said they somewhat support it, while approximately 16% said they somewhat oppose it and 14% said they strongly oppose it. While there was no significant difference

in attitudes between men and women, opinions varied based on region, age group, homeowner and relationship status varied. Results showed: • Support for the measure is highest among younger adults and decreases with age. The most supportive group is those aged 25-34, with 74% in favor of it. This is followed by adults 35-44 (73%), 45-54 (71%), 55-64 (66%) and 65+ at 61% in favor.

• While support was strong across the country, those in the West were the most supportive with 72% in favor.

This was closely followed by 71% in the Northeast, 68% in the South and 67% in the Midwest.

• When it comes to homeownership, 71% of non-homeowners support a nationwide solar mandate, with 36% saying they strongly support it. Among homeowners, 68% of them are supportive, with 29% saying they strongly support it.

• Relationship-wise, single survey takers showed more support for the solar mandate, with 73% of them in favor, compared to 68% of survey takers who are married or living with a partner.

As residential solar is currently optional for existing homeowners, survey takers were also asked who would most influence their decision to install solar panels on their

home for the good of the environment. Spouses/ significant others proved the most powerful force, with 58% of survey takers claiming they would be influenced by them (36% a great deal of influence, and 22% some influence). Environmental experts were the next most influential, with 57% saying they would be influenced by their opinion (28% a great deal of influence, 29% some influence).

Politicians are the least influential, with just 19% of people saying a political figure would influence their opinion to go solar for the environmental benefits (6% a great deal of influence, 13% some influence). And while politicians don’t rank highly

overall, data shows the older you get, the less likely you are to be influenced by them.

Among survey takers, the percentage who say politicians have no influence: 46% for those aged 25-34; 49% age 35-44; 59% age 45-54; 64% age 55-64, and 73% of those aged 65+. Comparatively, 29% of those 25-44 claimed politicians would have some or a great deal of influence, while only 7% of those 65+ stated the same.

Other solar decision influencers include friends (45% influenced by them), children (36%), other family members (36%) and parents (34%). Specific to children, the influence is greatest when they live in the home, where 22% of

survey takers say their children have a great deal of influence, and 29% say they have some influence.

While partners had the most influence, whether or not the couple is married makes a difference. Seventy fivepercent of people who are married or living together are influenced by their partner.

However, married couples are more strongly influenced by their partner, with 51% stating their spouse had a great deal of influence. This is compared to unmarried partners living together, with just 45% saying their partner had a great deal of influence.

FTC Solar completes Mo Duc Project; Expands Vietnam Partnership

FTC Solar and Thien Tan Group expand solar partnership, complete Mo Duc Solar Project in Quang Ngai Province FTC Solar and Thien Tan Group have completed construction of Thiên Tân Group’s 19 MWdc Mo Duc Solar project in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam. The project, one of the first in Vietnamfunded with private company capital investment, will supply 28 million kilowatts per hour to the national power grid. Thien Tan Group celebrated project completion with a commissioning ceremony earlier this quarter.

After the commissioning ceremony, FTC Solar and Thien Tan Group signed contracts for an 30

additional 80MWs across two solar projects to be constructed in the Ninh Thuan Province in 2019 using FTC Solar’s new Voyager Tracker. “The 80MWs planned in Ninh Thuan Province represent the continuation of a strong partnership between FTC Solar and Thien Tan Group. We are excited about working together and our continued growth in the region,” said Tony Etnyre, CEO of FTC Solar.

In addition to deploying the Voyager tracker, FTC Solar will provide full engineering services to Thien Tan, including development engineering, detailed project design, construction management, and commissioning.

“FTC Solar has supported us

from the beginning, and we are pleased to complete the Duc Minh project together. The Thiên Tân and FTC Solar partnership is strong and will have continued success in Vietnam and the region,” said Mr. Huynh Kim Lap, Chairman of Thiên Tân Group.
