here are more than 800 people in the world today who have no access to safe water. Women and children, as the ones who are taking care of the household in most countries, spend countless hours collecting water which, unfortunately, do not contain any drop of safety and potability.

Another disturbing case in some countries is that they are still into repairing and keeping the old way of providing utilities to consumers when in fact, they could invest in renewable energy and improve transmission capabilities to a full extent. The thing is, progress cannot be met if the people are thirsty and dry with their very basic needs.

Despite the efforts of different sectors and non-government organizations to build a permanent solution to these problems, the numbers still grow as the population bursts. Without the mechanical engineers and some organization interventions, there will be no concrete and strong foundation in addressing the crisis.

Mechanical engineering has been a steadfast ally in fighting these dilemmas that even first-world countries encounter.

ASME: A Paragon Of Commitment To Human Progress One organization named ASME has proven that engineers can do something to elevate the caliber of responsibility they could provide. They are committed to improve the reliability of machine design in different fields specially the boiler and pressure vessels. In every area, we are guided by ASME’s timeless mission: “to promote and advance engineering to improve quality of life.” My ASME colleagues and I are very proud to be a part of this great project; it is one of the honors of my career to serve as president of this historic organization. ASME, founded as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1880, is a global, multidisciplinary, and worldwide community of over 100,000 members in more than 150 countries. Our community comes together to serve our profession and the world: from engineers, managers, executives, researchers and academic leaders to early-career engineers and students who are tomorrow’s professionals, ASME members are as diverse as the global engineering community itself.

Our vision is simple: to be the essential engineering resource for solutions to global grand challenges. We work today and every day to realize that vision via offerings and opportunities to help engineers at every stage of their career. This community is comprised of members, staff, customers, and volunteers, all working together to serve our mission and make that vision a reality.

About the President, Said Jahanmir, Ph.D. aid Jahanmir, Ph.D., is the 137th president of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); he has been an active volunteer since 1985. His leadership positions have included chair of the ASME Tribology Division, chair of the Board of Research and Technology Development, and Vice President for Research. He has also served on ASME’s Board of Governors, as a member of the Committee on Finance and Investment, and he is an ASME Fellow. Born and raised in Iran, Said came to the USA at the age of 16. By his own account, he was interested in science and technology from his very earliest days.

How would Said characterize his leadership style? He calls it “participatory leadership” – Said prefers to get all the members of his teams involved and working together on the basis of their enthusiasm and interest. He seeks to nurture ideas, participation, and multiple approaches. Said is not a micromanager who seeks to dominate a project or team; rather, he prefers to “rally the troops” and trust them to do their work well. He is not easily thrown by adversity; he keeps his composure even in stressful situations and leads by example rather than by edict. As his ASME and other colleagues can tell you, he makes everyone better by doing so.

Said’s professional career has included service in academia, the private sector and government. Along with his service as ASME president, he is currently assistant director for federal partnerships at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office at the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST). His present assignment is in the Executive Office of the President of the United States, where he serves as executive secretary for the Subcommittee on Advanced Manufactur-

Prior to that position, he was a senior legislative fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives, where as an ASME Congressional Fellow he served as an advisor on manufacturing, science and technology policy, STEM education, and workforce development. Said received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington (Seattle) and both his S.M. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from MIT.

Said’s goals for his yearlong presidential term include increasing the number of active ASME members, especially early career engineers and students, and motivating staff and volunteers to develop genuine collaboration and partnerships.

Cultivating an active and motivated membership base is essential to ensure the continued success of the ASME; Said believes that appealing to the rising generation of engineers is needed for that to happen.

“We must attract and retain students and early career engineers and capture their energy, creativity and passion,” he said.

“We need to have a clear value proposition that includes new programs and services.

We should provide what members, and particularly younger members, need for their professional growth, for example professional development and leadership training.”

One of the first things to know about ASME is that we are one of the oldest standards-developing organizations in America.

We produce over 500 codes and standards covering many technical areas including fasteners, plumbing fixtures, elevators, pipelines, and power plant systems and components. ASME Standards are developed by committees of subject matter experts using an open, consensus-based process. Many of the ASME standards they create are

Education and Professional Development

ASME Learning & Development is a recognized leader in training for engineers and technical professionals. Our specialized courses are tailored to the needs of industry professionals and combine academic rigor with applications to real-world situations. We provide educational opportunities across a broad range of engineering and technical disciplines and offer them via many different plat-

forms both on and offline. Our instructors are experts in their fields; some are even the authors of the codes and standards that their courses address.

I should also mention here that ASME is a founding member of ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor of degree-granting postsecondary programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology.

ASME members, not just academics but representatives of industry as well, are needed and take the opportunity to serve as ABET/ASME program evaluators – another way that ASME continually upholds the highest engineering standards, in this case in education.

Pre-College Outreach Programs

Of all our educational programming, it may be ASME’s Pre-Col-

lege Initiatives that “INSPIRE” tomorrow’s engineers most. These efforts (like our eponymous ASME INSPIRE K-12 program) reach young students who may not yet know about mechanical engineering, to open their minds to the possibilities and opportunities that engineering holds for them. ASME’s INSPIRE program is now in use in more than 1,100 schools and currently reaches more than 73,000 middle- and high-school students. And it’s only one way ASME is working to share the possibilities and opportunities of mechanical engineering with young people.

I myself served as an ASME Congressional Fellow and so had the chance to participate in government efforts in a way that both enriched my own career and gave me a chance to give back by offering engineering know-how to benefit the public. Timely Global Collaboration – Technology, Value and People Sunlight Electrical Pte Ltd, a CHINT subsidiary, completed an iconic project execution for a prestigious global solar manufacturer (North Europe origin). The mentioned solar manufacturer planned to have an expansion for the existing solar panel manufacturing plant in the west of Singapore. Around 60 low voltage switchboards were required and needed to be in full operation with all the automation control integrated within half a year from the project commencement to ensure the solar manufacturer business growth. the top 10% of their class in science or engineering. The applicant must prove admission to a graduate program of doctoral studies in desalination or water reuse and must exhibit leadership and achievement potential. All applicants must be members of IDA.

The applications will be considered on the basis of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, references from university staff and one or more IDA members, along with the individual’s motivation statement for a planned career in desalination or water reuse technologies.

Danone, NestlĂŠ Waters and Origin Materials welcome PepsiCo to the NaturALL Bottle Alliance R&D partnership to develop 100% bio-based bottles

he NaturALL Bottle Alliance is a research consortium formed in 2017 by Danone, NestlĂŠ Waters and biobased materials development company Origin Materials to accelerate the development of innovative packaging solutions made with 100% sustainable and renewable resources. Today it announced that PepsiCo, Inc. has joined the Alliance to advance the shared goal

of creating beverage containers with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

The Alliance also provided a progress report in its goal of developing and launching a PET1 plastic bottle made from bio-based material.

Launched in March 2017, the Alliance uses biomass feedstocks, such as previously used cardboard and sawdust, so it does not divert resources or land from food production for human or

animal consumption. The technology being explored by the Alliance represents a scientific breakthrough for the sector, and the Alliance aims to make it available to the entire food and beverage industry.

“Creating more sustainable packaging requires innovation through the value chain. Producing PET from sustainable bio-based sources that do not diminish food resources and are

Progress Report

After producing samples of 80% bio-based PET at pilot scale in 2017, the Alliance has made further progress toward its goal of bringing its breakthrough technology to full commercial scale. It has notably selected a site in Sarnia, Ontario (Canada) (with the assistance of Bioindustrial Innovation Canada), and begun construction of its demonstration-scale plant. The major process equipment has been fabricated and modules are under construction for this plant, which is expected to

ou’re one step towards landing on that dream job you so eagerly want— the only thing that’s keeping you from it is that interview door and the dread of responding to those hard-hitting questions.

Engineers especially the more introverted ones are often denied the chance to get the job they so desire despite their very impressive resumes just because they failed miserably during the interview round. But fret not, you can nail even the toughest questions when you prepared beforehand.

Dr. Thomas J. Denham, a career counselor at Careers in Transition LLC in Colonie, New York stressed out that the interview portion is indeed an elimination process to weed out those who are not worthy of the position. For an employer, it serves as the last window period to have a glimpse on the applicant’s true nature so that he won’t wind up with the wrong hire.

And so, for an engineer like you struggling to finally get the job this time around, Denham offers you some advice to answer the toughest interview questions around.

But, Denham says, “The person who states the salary is the loser.” He followed by explaining, that if you are the first to throw out a number, the number you give could be less than what the employer was planning to pay. It’s a dangerous trap so wait for the employer to give a range, and when it does ask you for a figure you expect to be mak49

ing, choose a salary that is higher than the median they provide. To be safe, fair advice is to not talk about salary on the first interview.

3. Why should I hire you?

This is the moment you’ve rehearsed a million times for. It’s time to show your cards and prove to him that you own the title and the job. But before that, review your resume and pick three to five things that you think makes you outstanding and back them with facts.

Denham added, “The notion is that past performance is always the best predictor of future performance.”

4. What didn’t you like about your last job?

Reserve your anger and chill out. Take a deep breathe before you impulsively step into another trap.

The employer asks this question to fish for answers that would then

again hint through a weakness.

So instead Denham advises you answer this way, “I did not feel my responsibilities were challenging enough.” Then the employer will feel confident about you.

5. Where do you see yourself in three to five years?

I know what you’re thinking.

“How on earth would I know that?” or better yet, “I’m living in the present so, let’s forget about the future for once.” These answers are definitely a fall out. It’s basically like giving the employer an idea that you do not have any sort of plans or direction in life. According to Denham, you can try a response like, “I’ve done a lot of self-assessment, and what I’ve learned about myself is that I want to make a commitment to this career and I want to build my career here.” That should be enough.
