that had gone through intensive research for about 12 years of good fact-finding, organization leaders including engineers got only one thing to blame why they have to give up on any shot of social life and spend exhausting late nights doing work because the clock seemed to tick excessively fast.

Meetings…

That’s it! Harvard Business School researchers confirmed that 72% of a Boss’s day was spent on meetings! Yep, you got it right.

Seven days in a week, 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour, yet still feel like you are always running out of time? Yup, that’s because you are the “Boss”, and you sure are busy with a lot of stuff. But regardless of that, you need to win the battle of time management and emerge as an effective leader at all times.

With that, here’s a fresh release from a study in Harvard that completely got your back!

To add, the result of their survey to 182 senior managers when asked about what they think is the purpose of meetings will completely lose your mind. About 65 percent of them said that meetings only prohibit them from accomplishing their tasks for the day. Enough said, imagine how the study had confirmed that more meetings do not actually equate to great business performance.

before the conduct of a meeting? You can’t start working because you keep on telling yourself why start something when you’re going to have to stop? So you just sit there and waste about 20 minutes of waiting before the actual meeting begins at last.

Waste another good 10 minutes making yourself that hot-brewed coffee to settle yourself and bore your companions to death by doing unnecessary recap on what they’ve already announced. And so the cycle starts, you spend half your time checking your watch because you have another meeting right after this one...and then another one after that.

If this scenario is something you can relate about, well maybe you are someone who also worries about everything you’re not accomplishing while in a very unproductive meeting that I’m sure wouldn’t equate to progress that much.

Tip #1.

K.I.S.S meaning Keep it Short and Simple Keep meetings as fast as you can, allot just enough time to make sure everything is tackled and everybody gets reminded on important tasks.

T.H.A.T meaning Thinking Habit At Time Avoid long power point presentations. Just keep everyone’s brains and eyes open. Have notes and do brainstorming!

Tip #3: L.I.P.S meaning Let Insignificant Powwow Substitute you Don’t travel a lot just to meet everybody for every meeting. Have a priority of the most important meetings to least important.

Assign somebody to represent you for the least important ones. You flee yourself from meetings plus you trained somebody else to become the next Engineer Boss just like you for a day.

Again, remember to KISS THAT LIPS every time you do meetings!

What’s in the box?

On the surface, the Dynavent Smoke Ventilator is a natural, louvered ventilator. The vent is made from tough corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy in accordance with EN 573-3.

10 Tips on How To Be a Great Engineering Boss Select the best people An engineer knows that the best output requires the best materials, therefore the best company also requires the best employees. But you cannot afford to have the best team if you do not have the best selection system. Recruiting superior people for the company you are dreaming of is the initial step to succeed and to be able to do this, you must design your employment system properly. Remember, all managers are only as good as their chosen team.

Be a motivator Surely, it took you a lot of motivation to work hard and earn your position. Now, as a manager, it is your responsibility to check on the possible motivation sources of your employees.

Determine what can make them do better. Is it promotion? Salary increase? Recognition? Also, know what will prevent them to work badly.

Figure out how you can make them do what you want them to do and how to give what they want in exchange.

you have a motivated team? Yes, they might be motivated but it is to do their own thing. A good team is composed of a leader that motivates his or her members to succeed at an objective and he can do that by engineering a unified working structure and preventing selfish and individualistic work. Be a Leader, not just a Manager You cannot become a leader if you will only check updates and progress of your team.

Motivation will only become useful if you can lead your team towards a specific goal and elaborate the need to pursue it. Leadership is not only letting your subordinates do the work but guiding them step-by-step, in all levels.

That will separate yourself from being just a mere boss.

Improve as a communicator Who says engineers can’t excel in communication? Whether in speaking or in writing, they actually can. This is considered as the most important skill of a manager. He might be good at executing an input but if he lacks the ability to communicate its vision to his team, it will be useless. It is important for people to

understand the goal of your team so they’ll be able to act upon it accordingly. If you think you don’t have that skill at the moment, don’t worry.

Practice can improve your ability.

Get better at managing money The success of your team can also be measured through financial stability. No company can stay in the business without resources. Engineers are good at math but not all of them can handle monetary figures properly. Take control of your finances by spending less than what you bring in. Learn the best way to do so and take financial courses if you need to. Promise, you’ll never regret this investment.

Get better at managing time Your money and abilities might be unlimited but not your time. To be able to manage your time, you should develop a good project management.

To manage project efficiently, one must set the goals, the timeline and the appropriate budget.

This will show you how to accomplish things successfully through a more convenient yet effective route towards what you want.

Improve yourself Point out other people’s sty but don’t forget to look in the mirror to remove yours. Like any other field, engineering is a continuous learning process and the strength you possess at the moment might not be competent in the future. As

you check on the weaknesses of your employees and help them improve, do not forget that you also need to improve as an individual.

Practice ethical management What a lovely thing it would be if everybody in your team does the right thing? But who sets what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ in an organization? It’s you. The engineer boss. Part of the vision of an engineering company is to contribute to the welfare of society and this can be possible if employees are driven with strong ethical standard.

Take a break If computers and machines need some rest, what more for human beings! Take note that being over-stressed might result to incompetent outputs. The people you lead might also adapt the same habit that you have. When they do, everyone will bite each other inside the team. So recharge your batteries by heading somewhere peaceful and relaxing and see a different kind of productivity when you come back.

Projects and Products Spiralite has been installed in a number of prestigious projects in the UAE, the GCC and elsewhere in the world, from the USA to Singapore and all over Europe. In the UAE we are working with Masdar on their projects and Spiralite is currently being installed in the new WAFI 52-floor tower, the Clemenceau Medical Centre and several others, with more than 30 completed projects to date.

Energy Efficiency I would also like to share some interesting information about energy efficiency: 1. Circular ductwork has had a big impact in the market – in Scandinavia the use of circular ductwork has increased from 5% to 85% in the last 40 years, driven almost entirely by energy cost increases, and in the USA the recently completed multi-billion-dollar refurbishment of the Pentagon had a mandated 35% energy saving, a substantial portion of which was achieved by converting all the AC ductwork from rectangular to circular or flat oval.

In the recently completed major refurbishment of the Empire State Building in New York, the CEO instructed that all leading-edge energy saving technologies be introduced, notwithstanding any cost premium. The resulting payback was 1.61 years and his response was a statement that he would have been financially, operationally and environmentally irresponsible to have considered anything else.

Freezing in the Tropics: ASEAN’s Air-Conditioning Conundrum Study by Eco-Business Research Sponsored by KIGALI Cooling Efficiency Program

The rapid rise in Asean’s electricity demand in recent years has led to a surge in CO2 emissions and pollutants that threaten to create an environmental crisis for a region already vulnerable to the impact of extreme weather and poor air quality.

Primary energy demand has increased by 70% in the region, collectively known as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), from 2000 to 2016 with a further rise of 70% predicted up to 2040. Coal accounts for the largest share of the growth.

Electricity demand is expected to more than double to 2,000 tera-watt hours (TWH) up to 2040. Most of this growth comes from residential and commercial buildings, mostly for cooling, such that by 2040, air-conditioning could account for up to 40% of Asean’s overall electricity demand.

This crisis can be avoided if the region adopts more efficient technologies and supports a culture change in cooling consumption.

A survey of 424 respondents from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam, conducted in November and December of 2017, highlighted the problems of overconsumption and lack of awareness of the cooling challenge but also identified several opportunities.

They are: • Manufacturers and suppliers need to focus on producing more energy-efficient AC systems and better educating their customers • Poor energy management systems in public buildings need to be rectified by commercial operators and systems designers to avoid excessive cooling • Public awareness campaigns should be considered to help consumers better understand the energy labelling systems as well as the financial and environmental benefits of more efficient AC systems and to build a culture of energy sustainability • Stricter government legislation throughout the region should be used to ensure the uptake of more efficient AC products and for better design and management practices in commercial buildings • A wider array of financial options could be used to ensure consumers install the most efficient AC systems for home use

• Consumers, businesses and governments need to work together and regionally to manage the demand for electricity, reduce emissions and pollutants, and move away from the reliance on coal-fired power stations The context of Asean’s electricity demand and supply as well as the differing economic situations of the member states should also be considered when formulating a strategy to avert the cooling crisis.

Economic growth has risen along with fossil fuel based electricity consumption Asean’s economic success story over the first 50 years of its existence can be tracked alongside its thirst for energy. Energy demand has expanded by two and a half times from 1990 to 2013, and its rate of growth is one of the fastest in the world.

Electricity consumption to power home appliances such as air-conditioning (AC) in the tropical Southeast Asian region has increased at a rate of around 7.5% annually from 155.3 TWh in 1990 to 821.1 TWh in 2013. Over 80% of this electricity came from fossil fuels, with coal-powered stations being particularly dominant in the region. Hence overall carbon dioxide emissions for the region have grown at 34

similar rates. Cooling consumes an increasing amount of this growth.

Energy efficient appliances can substantially reduce power demand The upward trajectory of electricity consumption and CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced through the adoption of better technologies. If Asean countries switch to energy efficient products and lighting, they can reduce their consumption of electricity by 100 TWH at a saving of US$12 billion annually.

This is the equivalent to the annual production of 50 power plants of 500 MW capacity, meaning that 50 power plants would not have to be commissioned.

When energy consumption for ACs in Asean countries is forecast using the best available technology for air-conditioning (BAT scenario), huge savings can be achieved.

If Malaysia and Singapore adopted the BAT scenario, for example, there would be an actual reduction in overall energy consumption for ACs by 2030 for these two countries, compared with 2015 levels. This would be despite growth in populations and affluence.

Conversely, if there is no change to current consumption habits (the business as usual,

or BAU scenario) then energy consumption in all Asean countries would increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.7% by 2030.

Excessive cooling in public spaces gives the wrong message to consumers Consumers in the region seem to have a basic awareness that more efficient technologies can result in a lower electricity bill. Yet they are not aware of quite how important this is to ensure that the region achieves its targets for CO2 emission reductions, as reflected in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris agreement. This lack of awareness is not helped by the experience of the average city dweller in the region, who regularly encounters excessive cooling in buildings which sends the wrong message that controlling efficiency is not a major priority.

Survey respondents in Singapore seemed the most vocal about the excessive cooling of public spaces with 68% of respondents indicating that they often encounter settings that are too cold. This was also a common response across the region, with significant numbers indicating that they often encounter excessive cooling. The situation seemed to be better managed in Indonesia, where only 38% of respondents stated that they often

encountered AC settings in public spaces that were too cold.

Changing consumer habits The behavioural habits of survey respondents on air-conditioning reflect the relative affluence of the different countries in the region and the installation rate of air-conditioning units in households. Respondents from Vietnam, The Philippines and Indonesia were more likely to report the use of other cooling systems apart from air-conditioning being used in public buildings, whereas respondents from the more developed economies of Malaysia and Singapore were less likely to notice more environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Similarly, respondents from Vietnam and Indonesia were more likely to agree that air-conditioning was a status symbol with respondents from Singapore (where the installed rate was estimated at between 76100%) much less likely to see it as anything other than a necessity.

Government initiatives needed to manage the cooling crisis Despite concerns about the excessive cooling of public buildings, 77% of Singapore respondents agreed or strongly agreed that HVACR Leaders • September 2018

their government was actively managing power demand through initiatives such as promoting energy efficiency standards in airconditioning. At the other end of the scale, only 30% of respondents from Vietnam agreed or strongly agreed that the same was happening in their country. The most populous country in the region, Indonesia, scored 38% for this question, indicating the scope for improvement across the region through government intervention.

There was no shortage of suggestions from survey respondents as to how the region could better manage its cooling challenge. These ranged from more effective use of passive cooling methods or refrigerant-free alternatives to air-conditioning, to innovative finance and recycling programmes to promote the uptake of more energy efficient models. Respondents were also unanimous in wanting to see their countries move towards clean energy adoption.

Governments around the region have agreed on targets for AC efficiency and are at 36

different stages of local implementation. Given the radical differences in the size, state of economic development, and political situations of the countries that make up the Asean region, the challenges for governments vary considerably. However, in all cases, there are some clear areas where governments can be focusing efforts and directing change more effectively to ensure more efficient cooling.

This paper aims to highlight both the economic and environmental benefits for driving the region towards more efficient use of ACs as well as highlighting some of the most obvious areas that governments, businesses and consumers can direct their immediate attention.

Without significant efforts to make cooling efficient and clean in Asean, the region will miss out on economic and social gains while overpolluting the local and global environment.

Put boundaries on people who make you angry

Your brows say that you like a hot iron to touch your boss’ face. You want zombies to eat the brains your calculus professor who rejected the practicum you worked hard for. You think it’s best for your lazy workmate to get hospitalized so he won’t be with you for the next project.

Build a strong wall that will protect you from people who keeps on violating your physical and emotional boundaries. If he or she happened to be assigned with you for a project, make a deal with yourself that you won’t let him or her take advantage of you in any situation and that you are professional enough not to allow this person to disrespect you.

Get to the bottom of why you are really angry

and pausing for a while helps the said chemicals to slow down. Before saying anything harsh, take that precious pause and see the difference of opposite actions. Smart engineers make careful choices in materials as well as in dealing with work relationships.

Be the first to reach out after an argument

Sometimes, your anger is just a reaction when you hit the tip of an iceberg but deep in the water are the real reasons why you’re pissed off. This is what emotionally intelligent people analyze. They ask themselves, “What’s really beneath my anger?” This is the time you will realize that your anger is a result of something that is disturbing you, usually something unsolved lying underneath your skin. It may be anxiety, worry, fear of failure, expectations, etc. You have to deal with these first before you make a step on how to get your job done when your boss demands so much from you. Honesty within yourself is the key. Process is an integral part of engineering and is also a vital portion of managing emotions well. So put your trust on it.

Respond, don’t react Ooops! You better step back before you react.

Violent reaction to terrible situations might be rational for some people but emotionally intelligent ones do not resort to impulsive responses. Engineers with high EQ knows how to assess the situation, get perspective, listen without judgment, and hold back from reacting head on. They walk away when being triggered and come back when their anger subsides. They also acknowledge anger and will proceed talking to a friend who might give better perspective and understanding on the situation and know that reacting badly might cause further trouble.

Engineers build bridges, they don’t burn them.

Be someone that constructs strong connection with people in this world full of engineers that do otherwise. It will not make you less of a person if you’re the first one to issue an apology.

As the saying goes, “it’s better to lose my pride because of my friend rather than losing my friend because of my pride.” Humility and courage are characteristics of a smart engineer.

Shift to the positive Anger is something hard to get off your chest after a heated exchange but you can do two things to oust negativity. One is to meditate on the things you’re grateful for in the past 24 hours. Saying “I’m thankful that I’m assigned in this area because I get to learn new culture” might be one. Shaw Achor, positive psychologist said that doing this for 21 straight days will train your brain to pick up positive thoughts. This will help you become more optimistic. Aside from that, an intelligent engineer knows how to put him or herself in the shoes of his or her colleague. Looking at the possible situation a person might be facing can lead anger to shift into understanding.

University Of Hawai’i Maui College Aims To Be The First Campus With 100-percent Renewable Energy Generated On-site With Battery-enabled Self-supply UH partners with Johnson Controls and Pacific Current to produce more than $79 million in energy savings over 20 years University of Hawai’i (UH) announced that its Maui College campus will soon be among the first in the nation to generate 100 percent of its energy from on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) systems coupled with battery storage. The project is part of a partnership with Johnson Controls and Pacific Current that will also allow four UH community college campuses on O’ahu to significantly reduce their fossil fuel consumption.

UH Maui College’s new PV plus storage system will be capable of eliminating the campus’ fossil fuel-based energy use when it is operational in 2019. On O’ahu, through the combination of solar shade canopies, distributed energy storage and energy efficiency measures, Leeward Community College, Honolulu 40

Community College, Kapi’olani Community College and Windward Community College will reduce their use of fossil fuel for energy by 98 percent, 97 percent, 74 percent and 70 percent, respectively.

In 2015, Hawai’i became the first state in the country to make an unprecedented commitment to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2045. Concurrently, UH and the Hawai’i Legislature established a collective goal for the university system to be “net-zero” by January 1, 2035, meaning the system would produce as much renewable energy as it consumes across its campuses.

Of the ten campuses, UH Maui College is on target to be the first to supply 100 percent of its energy needs through renewable energy.

The partnership between UH, Johnson Controls and Pacific Current is the second phase of

a multi-year energy efficiency and renewable energy project. In phase one, energy efficiency measures were successfully implemented at UH Maui College and the O’ahu community college campuses under energy performance contracts awarded to Johnson Controls in 2010. Phase two includes additional energy efficiency upgrades and the installation of on-site solar PV coupled with battery storage, allowing the five campuses to use the renewable generated energy as needed. The PV plus storage systems will be developed by Johnson Controls and owned

by Hawai’i-based Pacific Current. The energy efficiency upgrades will also reduce the deferred maintenance backlog at these campuses by approximately $20 million.

“With the implementation of phase two, these five UH campuses will have reduced fossil fuel energy consumption by ~14 GWh annually (45 percent) and added ~13 GWh renewable energy generation,” said UH Vice President for Community Colleges John Morton. “We are proud to move the entire University of Hawai’i System closer to its net-zero energy mandate, to celebrate UH Maui College’s achievement and to position the O’ahu community college campuses within reach of 100 percent renewable energy generation.”

Following the successful implementation of energy conservation measures across the campuses during phase one, phase two will bring the total on-site capacity to 2.8 MW of solar PV and 13.2 MWh of battery distributed energy storage at UH Maui College, and 7.7 MW of solar PV and 28.6 MWh of battery distributed energy storage to the UH Community Colleges O’ahu campuses.

“Hawai’i’s leaders set the national example of sustainability and renewable energy standards with the net-zero mandate by 2035 for UH, and we’re proud to partner with the university to help it reach that commitment and aim for UH Maui College to become the first campus in the U.S. to generate and store 100 percent renewable energy onsite, 16 years ahead of schedule,” said Rod Rushing, president, Building Solutions North America, Johnson Controls.

Energy and infrastructure improvements at the five UH campuses involved in the project are scheduled to be completed by Q2 2019.

Coach “Ek” did not show the world how the soccer team could win a game but rather he showed how his boys could win over death.

When an engineer showed to his subordinates that he or she is willing to sacrifice his or her interest for them, trust develops. People will take the initiative to cooperate to make sure that no one will be solely put in trouble because his or her leader themselves show concern and willingness to do whatever it takes to get through the problem.

Focus on the results and appreciate what they have done to accomplish the task rather than scolding them for not doing it your way.
