Can’t Land an Engineering Job? Stop Doing These Job Search Mistakes Get a grip! Lose all these lousy job search habits and claim that dream job.

There are just engineers who are so reckless during their job search. Some do not care about polishing their resumes, going to the job interview without rehearsing, and whatever that doesn’t require any effort. The important thing to them is just get a damn job. That’s it. What they do not realize is the weight of what they’re doing before and during applying. Even the smallest mistakes can break your job applications, in case you don’t know.

Lying in job applications. Engineering companies now are more careful and stringent in hiring new people. They utilize the power of the Internet to verify facts especially on your resume. Save yourself from further embarrassment by being honest in your resume.

Engineering job applicants need to be wary of these most painful job search mistakes. I hope that once you’ve been enlightened by these, you won’t make such mistakes again.

Failing to follow up. You have to know how your application is going. Unless the company said, “Don’t call us, we’ll call you” then follow that. But if there’s no mention, always check on the status of your application.

Typos on the resume. Before you print that resume, have it checked by someone else for errors. Then check it again by yourself. It sets an impression of unprofessionalism that you can’t look over that tiny resume mistake.

Being unprofessional. If you’re one with an e-mail address from 2009 that is most likely to be ridiculous, change that. Sanitize your social networking profiles as well. Engineering companies now are extra sneaky!

Relaxing on job applications. You need to find the job, engineer. The job won’t come to you. Stop relying on job postings and look for the unadvertised ones. The odds are they are the best finds because you don’t have much competition. Be proactive in finding the best job

Going into the interview late and unprepared.

This isn’t what the company wants from an engineer: tardy and dangerously spontaneous.

Always come to any job interview before calltime and with poise. It pays to rehearse a job interview.

Dubai Properties Unveils Middle East’s Largest Living Green Wall at Dubai Wharf In a bid to promote sustainable living, Dubai Properties today officially unveiled the Middle East’s largest living green wall at Dubai Wharf, located in the heart of Culture Village overlooking the historic Dubai Creek.

Extending 210 metres in length and rising six metres high, the impressive vertical garden spans 1,260 square metres and features over 80,000 plants forming a leaf canopy area equivalent to around 200 trees, capable of offsetting an estimated 4.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

Building upon the scientifically proven benefits of greenery within communities, such as having a calming effect and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle, the master developer sought to create a microclimate that enhances the aesthetic appeal of Dubai Wharf and the well-being of its visitors and residents. The stunning green wall provides a perfect backdrop for pictures and invites nature lovers for an idyllic stroll along the Dubai Creek shoreline.

Living green walls are vertical gardens that are particularly useful in urban landscaping, where space can be a constraint. Plants naturally remove carbon dioxide and produce oxygen while filtering the air around them through absorbing pollutants. This beneficial effect is compounded by the sheer number of plants in living green walls.

Raed Al Nuaimi, Group Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Properties, said: “As one of the top 20 happiest countries in the world and the happiest in the Arab region, according to the World Happiness Report 2018, the UAE is a keen supporter of sustainable living environments that are known to enhance the quality of life and elevate happiness levels.”

The Dubai Wharf Green Wall is a prime example of our holistic approach to well-being in our communities, as it instils a sense of serenity throughout the neighbourhood while supporting the local ecosystem and beautifying the surroundings. In addition, having a new Dubai landmark at their doorstep is a matter of pride for the residents of this community.”

Green walls are a relatively new concept worldwide, with 93 per cent installed after 2007. Found mostly in urban environments, where the plants help reduce the overall temperature of the buildings, many of the best-known green walls are located in public places, such as airports and shopping malls.

Heat build-up in cities is primarily caused by the absorption and subsequent emission of solar heat in asphalt roads and building materials.

Plant surfaces can help offset this occurrence by reducing temperatures through a process called evapotranspiration. The effect can be felt more prominently in the immediate vicinity of a surface such as a green wall that can lower surrounding temperatures by up to five degrees Celsius.

Developed by landscaping experts Gover Horticulture, the Dubai Wharf Green Wall is made using geotextile grow bags filled with peat substrates enriched with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK). This allows for better root growth, irrigation and drainage in the UAE climate that can often get quite harsh during the long summers.

Culture Village is one of Dubai Properties’ defining mixed-use destinations that offers sought-after waterfront living against the spectacular backdrop of Dubai Creek across two distinct locations – Dubai Wharf and Manazel Al Khor. The two luxury residential developments are complemented by the Canal Promenade that features ample greenery and a wooden playground, making it an ideal place for kids to explore.

But beyond our professional duties, ASCE member groups volunteer their time in the community in different ways, including K-12 outreach, advocacy efforts like authoring an Infrastructure Report Card, or serving on a technical team that evaluates infrastructure after a natural disaster like an earthquake or hurricane.

What are the latest trends in civil engineering?

Like so many areas of our lives, the profession of civil engineering is changing rapidly thanks to new technologies that help us do our work more efficiently and make more informed decisions. For example, drones, sensors, and robots aid infrastructure inspections. Drone

these technologies are also necessitating that engineers become even more well-rounded employees. To be successful, civil engineers need to engage across multiple disciplines, interacting with technology professionals and understanding the implications of new gamechangers such as autonomous vehicles and how we need to change the design of our transportation network to fully benefit from their potential, for example.

Similarly, having access to better real-time data on infrastructure assets is allowing engineers to make the most of limited funding dollars and prioritize projects. ASCE’s Grand Challenge initiative is pushing our industry to embrace life cycle cost analysis, which evaluates an infrastructure asset throughout its whole life, including operation and maintenance, two key expenses that are often left out of the budgeting process and therefore never fully funded.

An emphasis on resilience is also transforming how we plan and design projects. Engineers recognize that we are building infrastructure assets that will most likely outlive us. We’re envisioning what challenges that infrastructure might face, like a growing population or sea level rise, and designing it to be fit for the future.

What are the challenges and obstacles in making civil engineering accessible to women?

As one of only a few female presidents the Society has had, I’m also part of a larger, watershed moment as all three of ASCE’s presidential officers (past president, president, and president-elect) are women. As an organization, we’re exploring women’s experiences in civil engineering, including through our salary survey. Similar to the national average, the survey found a pay gap between men and women. We’re diving further into that data to better understand why the pay gap persists and find some ways to close it.

Our student chapters are 30 to 50 percent female, which is a huge change from when I was in school. I think this shows that the industry is going to change dramatically to become even Construction Leaders

more accessible to women in the future, as more women enter the profession with a desire to solve our infrastructure challenges. We’re working to address the profession to ensure those women are embraced as they graduate and find a profession ready to diversify and solve our global challenges in an inclusive way.

What are the latest technologies that are disrupting the Construction industry?

The Internet of Things is influencing the industry just as much, if not more, as it is others. 3D planning, design, and printing are helping visualize projects earlier in the process. While the digital tools are changing and improving

the way we understand and design our projects enabling us to be more efficient and sustainable, the ever-increasing use of big data is also helping us better manage and utilize our infrastructure. In many cases, this is improving quality of life while reducing costs. An example is using data to better manage the transportation network – whether through providing alternate route options for a commute in real time, essentially better distributing the traffic across all of our assets, or using similar data as well as weather, ticket sales, and more to better predict potential delays and proactively adjust the network to mitigate delay before it happens.

These are both ways in which we may improve the utility of the existing infrastructure.

About Kristina Swallow Kristina Swallow is the current president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Kristina is a civil engineering leader with more than 20 years of professional practice in water resources, transportation, and land development.

Kristina has a diverse professional background that includes serving as a program manager in the capital improvements division for the City of Las Vegas, as a transportation policy advisor for a U.S. Senator in Washington, D.C., and working as a land development consultant in the fastest growing city in the United States, including five years as a small business owner.

She is passionate about civil engineering and the benefits of infrastructure for communities, especially transportation systems.

She is married to a civil engineer, Dave, and has three dogs. In her spare time, she enjoys running, aerial acrobatics, exploring new cities, and just trying new things.

The latest landmark project for Dubai is nearing completion in the Al Satwa area of the city and once again Delmon Scaffolding LLC has played a major role in its construction.

Dubai Arena is a state of the art, multi-purpose stadium which is set to become the ‘go to’ venue for large-scale international music concerts and sporting events.

The arena is being constructed by ASGC as a ‘design and build’ contract and it is expected to open later this year. Because of the difficult nature, high level of finishes required and very tight construction schedule allowed, ASGC elected to construct the majority of the

superstructure from pre-cast concrete and duly appointed their subsidiary and specialist precast contractor, Hard Precast to the job.

Precast concrete offers many advantages in construction in terms of speed and quality, but even though members are prefabricated, they still need temporary support during assembly until they can form a self-supporting structure.

The temporary structures needed for precast are a specialist undertaking, as the systems involved must in some cases be capable of carrying the weight of entire structure. It was this area of temporary works in which Delmon was responsible.

Delmon are no strangers to this type of work and have successfully completed a number of structures with this contractor in City Walk, as well as other high profile projects across the UAE, Qatar and Oman, so it was not surprising they were selected for this project.

The Delmon team have built a high level of expertise from their previous similar projects and as distributer for ULMA formworks have the specialist equipment necessary for such an enterprise.

This was a unique and difficult project and it proved very challenging because of the complexity of the structure and the short duration of the construction program. In terms of engineering the Delmon team were made to work hard on quick turnarounds to ensure that designs were completed and equipment could be sent to site to enable work to progress on schedule. The fact that some elements were 20 meters clear height, had high loads, irregular shapes, inclined soffits and the falsework support could not be tied into the existing structure will give an idea of some of the issues faced by Delmon Engineering team.

“This really is a credit to all of the Delmon team” commented Frank Abbott Sales Director Delmon. “The level of expertise and commitment shown, especially by our Engineering Department, was exceptional.

This was a complex project, but we were able to provide an overall solution to the contractor which was both cost effective, safe and practical for every case”.

Delmon solution in this project involved ULMA T60 heavy duty shoring towers along with various sizes of ULMA EP D+E Props. T60 is ideal for this application because of its high load capacity, flexibility and ease of assembly.

T60 conforms to the highest international safety standards and can be erected in-situ or pre-assembled and lifted in for maximum safety and reduced labour and cost.

Djibouti is located at the junction of the three rifts – the East African, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea rifts. It plays a crucial junction role for import and export, representing a major gateway connection.

This is one of the reasons that motivated the Djibouti Ports & Free Zones Authority to begin construction of a $3.5 billion dollar free trade zone, which extends over 4,800 hectares.

A master of science in engineering graduate shares her story.

Are you thinking about boosting your career by undertaking graduate study? We spoke to Amani Alhammadi, who completed a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at American University of Sharjah in 2012. Amani shared with us what it is like to undertake a graduate program at AUS, and what difference a master’s degree has made to her engineering career.

What was the master’s degree that you completed at American University of Sharjah?

I completed a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME).

Why did you decide to pursue a master’s in engineering at the College of Engineering at American University of Sharjah?

AUS is a leading university in the field of engineering, and it is well known for its practice of integrating research with education. It is also very focused on applied science and technology. I believe that AUS is the best environment to conduct research in the mechanical engineering field, as it fosters a sense of innovation.

What is your current position? What impact did your master’s degree have in getting you into that position?

I am currently a senior electromechanical engineer.

The education I received while studying a master’s at AUS has not only given me the right

tools to further progress my academic skills, but it has also undoubtedly prepared me for any future challenges I may face, and any endeavors I may choose to undertake during my career path. It has exposed me to the full range of mechanical engineering courses, all of which tended to reinforce and solidify my knowledge in the mechanical engineering fields. My AUS education has allowed me to apply the theoretical and practical part of my study to real-life aspects of my job.

Moreover, the thesis part of my master’s degree formed the platform that I have built my research skills on. It enhanced my ability to conduct independent research, managing projects, designing and configuring mechanical systems, modelling and analyzing mechanical systems, and writing technical papers. The program also enhanced my personal effectiveness skills, such as initiative, flexibility, self-motivation, and my ability to work independently and under pressure.

Did anything surprise you about the master’s degree after you began taking classes?

Yes, I was surprised by the number of advanced courses offered in mechanical engineering, as well as the innovative facilities available through the College of Engineering.

The variety of research areas and interests of the faculty members was also something that I did not expect.

What was the highlight of doing your master’s degree?

The highlight was being able to conduct and defend independent research that resulted in a significant knowledge contribution to the field of mechanical engineering. It is a chance that one should not miss, as AUS is as a research-oriented university that follows a strategy of integrating theory and practice. This allows students great access to world-class research initiatives.

The degree can equip students with a variety of practical and research skills to develop their individual academic and professional career, exposing them to the latest advances in engineering.

The College of Engineering has all the required facilities that promote the learning process, such as highly innovative research centers and well-equipped laboratory facilities, providing hands-on learning. Moreover, the degree offers a variety of engineering disciplines that the student can choose from, complementing their areas of interest.

The faculty at the College of Engineering are extremely friendly, encouraging and helpful.

The faculty members offer not only academic advice, but also support students in making AUS their home.

Can you briefly describe your thesis?

My thesis, entitled “Integrated renewable energy options for HVAC cooling systems”, is in the area of renewable energy and residential cooling systems. It is intended to solve problems related to the high cooling energy demand electrical grids, and environmental emissions associated with it. Five systems were developed in which fuels cells and solar energy collectors were integrated with absorption cooling systems for sustainable development. Thermodynamic analysis was carried out to study the performance of the integrated systems, considering the design parameters for a residential building in the UAE. The results showed a great opportunity for the integrated systems to replace or run in parallel with conventional cooling energy devices to achieve high performance cooling and lessen the environmental emissions, while providing the required cooling load.

The College of Engineering at AUS currently offers eight engineering master’s programs, as well as a recently launch PhD in Engineering– Engineering Systems Management. Whether you’re shifting into a new career unrelated to your previous field, or a fresh grad with no internships to write on your resume, what can you do to look as qualified as possible?

Here are some things you can do to improve your resume so you can present yourself well even if you lack experience.

Add Relevant and Transferable Skills Many resumes begin with relevant work experience or for fresh graduates, education followed by relevant experience. If this is not your strong suit, write down your relevant skills. These are the skills you already have that you feel are suited for the job you are applying for.

Try to analyze the skills you have developed while in school doing academic projects.

Are you a leader of an organization in your school? The head programmer in your team projects? Are you well known for being able to deliver a presentation well in class? Try writing all your skills down and summarize them at the beginning of your resume, or after the education section.

Academic Projects Every engineering student has experienced toiling over loads of projects. These are important and should definitely be included in your resume. If you have any other side projects that you’ve done outside school that you feel gave you the skills to perform the job you’re applying for well, then add them.

You can present this well in your resume under a “Projects” section. Here, you will write about your project the same way you

would for work experiences. Examples of these could be volunteering at a local charity, event organizing, or even commissioned projects.

A Good and Specific Cover Letter What makes a good and specific cover letter?

Its contents are brief, yet complete and gives you a strong presence in a positive way. Put all your writing skills into this one, have it read twice or thrice by people you trust.

Find a way to connect your passions and life experiences with the company, then explain how this will keep you enthusiastically on your feet once you are hired.

These are just a few tips to help you with your job hunting journey. Try to apply some of these tips if not all, then have a friend, family member or professor proofread it for you. I hope this helps. Goodluck!

What’s in the box?

On the surface, the Dynavent Smoke Ventilator is a natural, louvered ventilator. The vent is made from tough corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy in accordance with EN 573-3.

ADM Completes Roads and Infrastructure Project for Residential Plots at Al Maqta The Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) in cooperation with Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada), revealed that it had completed the Internal Roads and Infrastructure Project for Residential Plots at Al Maqta at the northern end of at the eastern part of Abu Dhabi Island along the Arabian Gulf Street. The project worths AED112m and spans an area of over 243 thousand square metres.

This project indicates that infrastructure projects are constantly expanding, thanks to the directives of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President, and the support of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Their Highnesses are keen to provide all means of happiness and quality living for nationals and residents on all fronts.

All infrastructure projects are consistent with the growth and the spread of urbanisation in Abu Dhabi and its environs. What Employers Look For When Hiring Fresh Engineering Graduates With zero work experience, fresh engineering graduates are confused as to what the determining factor really is to be employed.

Upon graduating in engineering school, perhaps your greatest worry is how you will be able to land a job. You think that it is difficult to find 44

employers who will trust someone like you who does not have legitimate work experience.

experiences outside of academics that matter to them: Internships, jobs, volunteering, and extracurricular activities.

“When employers do hire from college, the evidence suggests that academic skills are not their primary concern,” says Peter Cappelli, a Wharton professor and the author of a new paper on job skills.

“Work experience is the crucial attribute that employers want even for students who have yet to work full-time.”

Especially for fresh engineers, it pays to have exposure to companies as early as college through on-the-job trainings and work sidelines. While this is optional for some, lucky are those who have curriculums making internships compulsory because that is what employers want the most.

The Chronicle of Higher Education tallied the relative importance of attributes in evaluating graduates for hire. Internships lead with 23 points from a scale of 0 to 100, 21 points for employment during college, 12 points for volunteer experience, and 10 for extracurricular activities. All these are experience-based attributes.

Meanwhile, academic attributes include college major with only 13 points, relevance of coursework and college GPA both with 8, and college reputation with 5. This just proves that your GPA will not matter that much after graduation.

What does this mean for engineering students?

And for you as a job seeker?

It is true that you might have difficulty in securing your first job, but there is a trick: show to hiring managers that you will be worth it.

And the best way to do that is to write in your resume what they want.

Now the question begs: what do employers want?

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, it is not your college GPA but

Landmark Tower in Dubai Marina Achieves LEED Gold Certification

by US Green Building Council The Landmark Group office tower in Dubai Marina, has received LEED Gold Certification from the prestigious US Green Building Council in the new construction type category.

There are 15 LEED Platinum and 86 LEED Gold Projects in the UAE under various LEED Rating systems. Landmark is now among 16 buildings in Dubai who have received Gold LEED Building Design and Construction: New Construction.

The LEED Gold Certification under “LEED Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction, Ver 3” was given to Landmark Tower which was designed and constructed as a high-performance building. Commenting on the certification, Rajesh Garg, Group Chief Financial Officer Landmark Group, said: “The LEED certification is testimony to Landmark Group’s commitment to creating a sustainable environment. As a group we have undertaken many programmes to further enhance our operating efficiency and to reduce our environmental footprint. With the LEED certification, we intend to further implement green practices in every aspect of our operations.”

The tower has an overall carbon footprint savings of approximately 1,332 metric tons/ annum. Typical buildings power consumption ranges between 160 Kwh/sqm - 200 Kwh/sqm compared to Landmarks consumption of 113 Kwh/sqm/year.

Water consumption in the tower is also 40% lower than International Plumbing Council standards. High quality double layered clinical grade MERV 13 filters further improve the air quality as they remove bacteria, allergens and odour used to maintain the indoor air quality.

Additional technology to reduce energy consumption includes automated lighting controlling systems with daylight harvesting and intelligent elevators with energy regenerative motors. These have been installed so that as they are being used, the elevators produce energy and feed back in to the building grid.

Double flush urinals, WC with dual flush system and water taps with sensors are also used in the building to avoid water wastage. The building health is monitored by an automated BMS (building management system) throughout the day.

The building has also been constructed keeping in mind accessibility with handicap friendly measures and dedicated carpool and cycle parking.

So what now? What do you need to do to make the shift to other fields? Here are tips:

Research the role Say you are a civil engineer wanting to explore the renewable energy sector. While they are slightly related, the cores and scope of the two are different. The best thing to do to keep up is to research the role and study what it takes to get into the business.

When you do not have credentials, at least be knowledgeable about your new field of

interest. Dig deep into the job description, ask your friends who work in that sector, and pay attention to the nature of the job.

Update your resume Because you are going to apply for jobs in your new field, you have to make your resume appear that you are fit for your new roles. While you might have difficulty on the technical areas, your soft skills and other engineering skills will be handy as those are transferrable.

Relate your previous jobs to the new one as much as possible by mentioning the appropriate experiences that you had in your resume.

The hiring manager needs to be convinced that someone like you, a newbie to the field, is a worthy hire. He or she must never think that you are making a career shift. Use whatever you have researched and studied to your advantage while in this stage.

Be confident It pays to be sure about your decision of changing careers from being an engineer. Each step of the way you must have the trust in yourself that you will succeed in this endeavor.

If you do not have that, not one employer will be interested in you.

Sadara, Veolia Sign MOU to Build Sustainable Central Utilities Facility in PlasChem Park Sadara Chemical Company (Sadara) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Veolia Middle East SAS (“Veolia”), a Parisbased group and world-leader in industrial waste management, to construct a sustainable central utilities facility in PlasChem Park, the unique industrial park adjacent to the Sadara Chemical Complex. PlasChem Park is a collaborative effort between Sadara and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) in Jubail Industrial City II. The MOU provides a long-term waste management solution for Sadara, and creates an opportunity for Veolia to build a utility plant including waste management and waste energy facilities at PlasChem Park, enabling Veolia to manage a substantial portion of Sadara’s waste streams.

“One of Sadara’s main drivers is the enablement of a vibrant downstream manufacturing industry in Kingdom. Another is to always act responsibly towards the environment. This deal allows us to combine those two key objectives, and we are very excited indeed to partner with Veolia to deliver this waste product management solution.

With partners like Veolia, we are confident that we will continue to catalyze the growth of the Kingdom’s downstream manufacturing industry,” said Dr. Faisal Al-Faqeer, CEO at Sadara.

The central utilities “island” will incinerate industrial wastes and recover the heat from this process to produce a usable steam by-product.

This will act as an incentive to attract PlasChem Park investors, providing their proposed manufacturing plants with third-party steam at an attractive price.

Additionally, the Veolia facility will produce cooled water and compressed air, which will also be made available to PlasChem Park tenants for industrial use.

“We are very excited to be contributing our knowledge and experience to the further development of PlasChem Park, a truly exciting endeavor in Jubail Industrial City. This new utilities facility will implement environmentally responsible principles of the “Circular Economy,” a favored international economic model that keeps resources in use for as long as possible, extracting maximum value and then recovering and regenerating additional products and energy, a concept that we ascribe to wholeheartedly at Veolia,” said Faisal Al Dawish, Veolia Arabia CEO. The utilities project will be developed by Veolia and potential partners. The investment will be made by Veolia and partners, and Sadara will act only as facilitator to the project’s success and has agreed to transfer waste products to the plant.

Veolia, a global group, develops sustainable responsible services and expertise to companies in many types of industries. It currently operates 29 similar utility facilities worldwide.

In Jubail, Veolia group has a track record in operation and maintenance of industrial waste water projects and in delivering EPC works – specifically, the Marafiq Desalination Plant (800,000 m3/day) and the Sadara SWRO plant (178,000 m3/day).

Smart Sensors Make Energy Saving Second Nature Breakthrough Technology Prioritizes Energy Efficiency Without Sacrificing User Comfort

The spread of climate control technology in the latter half of the 20th century helped raise the standard of living across the globe, as happiness and productivity soared due to solutions that were able to make any environment more comfortable.
