Most of these locations are suited for recreational paddling with the whole family in mind. DEAL LAKE

BODY OF WATER: DEAL LAKE LOCATION: ASBURY PARK, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.22960600, -74.00932500

Deal Lake has many nooks and crannies to paddle around and explore. You’ll see lots of wildlife including blue heron, egrets, bullfrogs, turtles, ducks and geese. The lake is popular with fishermen for largemouth bass. This is an ideal location for yoga practice and family excursions. The water is calm and flat.

There is no fee to launch. A concrete ramp makes getting on and off the water easy.

Nearby street parking. No restrooms at this location, but a McDonald's and 7-Eleven are within walking distance.

MEMORIAL PARK SHARK RIVER

BODY OF WATER: SHARK RIVER LOCATION: NEPTUNE, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.19345200, -74.03061800

Memorial Park is a locals’ hideaway and it’s a great place to launch your paddleboards.

The small beach is a just a short walk from the parking lot.

It’s usually quiet and not too busy with people. This is not a swimming beach.

There is nice pavilion for picnics and small children’s park. It’s a nice, little beach, but it is known to sometimes have broken glass, so you may want to wear water shoes or flip flops down to the water’s edge and strap them on your board.

SHARK RIVER BEACH BODY OF WATER: SHARK RIVER LOCATION: BELMAR, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.17851300, -74.03320800

This is a free launch area at the 14th Street Beach. After unloading, you can usually find parking in the nearby Marina lot or on the street. The entrance to the water is a sandy beach. Be warned that during low-tide, it can get pretty mucky.

This is an active marina where commercial, charter, and private fishing boats are moored. Pay attention to the tide, the current can change quickly. You must yield to bigger boats. If you find yourself in their path, move away quickly.The speed a boat that is traveling can be tough to predict. Cross behind boats do not paddle across its path.

4TH AVENUE DOCK OCEAN CANAL BODY OF WATER: OCEAN CANAL LOCATION: MANASQUAN, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.11384300, -74.03691200

Access here is south of the Main Street Bridge in the 4th Ave Parking Lot. This is a great launch site inside a paid parking lot. You can also unload nearby and use dock for free. This modern floating dock with a ramp. It’s safe, well maintained and makes getting on and off the water easy.

Note: The Fourth Avenue Boat Dock is dedicated to the victims of the World Trade Center attacks on 9-11.

2ND AND STOCKTON AVENUES STOCKTON LAKE/WATSON’S CREEK BODY OF WATER: OCEAN CANAL LOCATION: MANASQUAN, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.1123, -74.0437

This is the site of Manasquan’s largest park. It features three baseball fields, a roller hockey rink and skate park.

There is a small non-motorized watercraft boat launch into Watson’s Creek which will lead you to Glimmer Glass. Enjoy!

GLIMMERGLASS MANASQUAN RIVER BODY OF WATER: MANASQUAN RIVER LOCATION: MANASQUAN, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.11377200, -74.04517700

Beautiful paddling in the sheltered waters of The Glimmerglass, Stockton Lake and connecting canal. There is so much to see and enjoy here. It’s a short paddle to tidal Manasquan River, Manasquan inlet, Lake Louise, and upriver to Osborn (aka Treasure) Island and beyond. Paddle the inlet to continue north or south along ocean beaches.

Safety: Watch boat traffic in inlet and fisherman casting from jetties. Very low clearance beneath RR bridge at high tide requires passage through the main channel to proceed upriver.

RIVER FRONT PARK POINT PLEASANT BEACH BODY OF WATER: BAY LOCATION: POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.08828300, -74.07094000

You’ll find this location at the corner of Maxson Ave. and River Rd. River Front Park is located on the beautiful Manasquan River where the former Point Pleasant Hospital once stood. This facility offers a pavilion with picnic area and charcoal grills, walking pier, bocce court, large playground, open field area and benches to watch the boats.

There is a sandy beach launch and a decent amount of free parking.

FORGE POND TOMS RIVER BAY

BODY OF WATER: TOMS RIVER BAY LOCATION: BRICK, NEW JERSEY COORDINATES: 40.06637700, -74.13470100

Forge Pond comes alive with egrets, blue herons, songbirds, water snakes, swans, box and painted turtles, and huge snapping turtles. Paddle under the Route 70 bridge and onto the Metedeconk River. Then head up river towards Brick Township, paddling for miles before the trees/shoreline ground cover block your passage. There is a mild tidal current as Forge Pond flows into Barnegat Bay, about 3.5 miles down the narrow river.

Parking is free and easy, in an unpaved lot directly off Rt 70 West, just west of the Rt 88/Princeton traffic light. Two small launch locations are located in the lots.

ATLANTIC OCEAN JERSEY SHORE BODY OF WATER: OCEAN LOCATION: NEW JERSEY SHORE

The ocean is one of our greatest wonders and it’s worth exploring if you are an experienced paddler. Paddling in the ocean surf and on flat water lakes are completely different experiences. Mornings typically provide the calm, glassy conditions you'll want. Remember, the ocean is unpredictable and prone to swells, rough waters, gusty winds, changing tides and marine life. Monitor the weather and tides before heading out.

With all that said, the ocean will likely provide you great conditions for paddle boarding.

Head out early for your best chance of great conditions and finding close beach parking.

Jersey Shore beaches require the purchase of a beach tag to be worn between the hours of 9 a.m. until 5 or 6 p.m. Each town or beach has its own tag, fees and regulations. For put in, we asked a few lifeguards and learned you can usually enter the water anywhere, preferably near the jetties, not in the middle of a busy swim area. And then paddle straight out past the break. Wear your life vest and board leash. Enjoy!
