W Welcome

to your Community Magazine

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Holland Residents Association Magazine. With the Covid 19 pandemic hopefully past its peak the Committee decided that it would be appropriate to resume distribution of printed copies of our quarterly magazine. Although we had some very positive feedback about the online version (the summer edition was the first one ever produced) we recognise that it was no substitute for the ‘real thing’. So now we are back to normal (although we intend to continue to publish an online version) and we hope you enjoy reading this when it comes through your letter box. now handle adverts and new volunteer Maureen Cochlin will liaise with all contributors to ensure that everything is received in time for publication. The HRA content will be coordinated by Ray Humphreys and Graphics Designer Dave Gough, who created our splendid new look for the Summer edition, will be responsible for putting everything into a format ready to be sent to the printer.

Although lives have been put on hold over the last few months the world never stands still. I have lots to report – some good things and some not so good. Firstly, Brian Thomasson has resigned as Honorary President of the HRA. He is now quite elderly and is in a care home. Brian has a long history of service to the community having been both a District Councillor and Leader of the Council. His vast experience has been of tremendous value to the association and we wish him well. However, I am pleased to say that Colin Sargeant has accepted the invitation to become the new President. Many of you will know that Colin was until recently the Essex County Councillor for the area and will also know that he is recovering well from a stroke experienced last year which has not dimmed his boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, we are also losing two Committee members, Jill and Tony Rulten, who are moving to Dorking to be closer to their daughter. Tony has been Secretary of the Association for several years and Jill although nominally “Trade and Commerce” has devoted her considerable energies to many other HRA activities as well. They will be sorely missed. No one is irreplaceable but these two people come pretty close. I for one will miss their wise counsel and good humour. We wish them well in this next step in life’s journey.

The Committee has acquired some new members most notably Andy Baker whose background in Planning is proving useful to the Committee and Gilly Wilson who appears to be young enough to actually understand computers sufficiently well to organise Zoom meetings. The magazine editorial team has also seen some changes. I will

be accommodated in the Village Hall) it has been decided that there will be no AGM this year. The Association’s annual accounts were prepared as usual and are available to view as part of the online Summer magazine on our website www.hollandresidents.co.uk

and the second for private households to decorate their front gardens or the exterior of their premises. Judging by the HRA will be made from the public footpath. So, 2020 is a year to remember but not in a very positive light for many people. Nevertheless, we can reflect on how extraordinarily lucky we are to live in Holland-on-Sea. In these Covid times our good fortune is in stark contrast to the lockdown lives of so many others. We have the seaside, the fresh air and our friends and neighbours.

The Christmas Community Event that we, together with local businesses, have organised over the last four years will not take place this year. This is partly because of the logistical difficulties we have experienced and partly because of the continuing uncertainty over Covid. However the Committee thought it would be nice to have two competitions in the village in the run up to Christmas – one for businesses and shops to decorate the exterior of their premises and shop windows (as they have done in the past)

Let us continue to work together to be a caring, open-hearted and happy community. Andy Dunnett - Treasurer With very best wishes to you all from the HRA Committee.

Dear Resident, I hope you are well, it is always good to have the opportunity to contribute to this newsletter. I warmly welcome the recent news about Caradoc surgery, which has had its management by ACE terminated. attractions, and economic contributors. As the Chair of the APPG for Theatre, I have been lobbying the Government on this relentlessly for the past few months, and Ministers said they would not let the arts down. This investment proves their level of commitment. Indeed, the Secretary of State, Oliver Dowden, has agreed to meet me to discuss the disbursement of this massive sum. Protecting and creating jobs will be central to our economic recovery. Yes, the new Kickstart Scheme will create hundreds of thousands of new fully subsidised jobs for young people, but the best way to create and protect jobs is for businesses to feel confident. That is why I recently held a virtual surgery with some local businesses to discuss their concerns about reopening and the Government’s financial support. I will be passing their comments onto the relevant Ministers to seek a positive resolution and would be happy to pass on any thoughts you may have too. Just email: giles.watling.mp@parliament.uk And to help people of all ages find a job, Ministers will also double the number of Work Coaches through Job Centre Plus, provide an extra £150 million into the Flexible Support Fund to remove barriers to work, and react quickly to large-scale redundancies by expanding the Rapid Response Service. I know that those on furlough may have concerns about the longevity of their employment, but significant support is there if the worst happens. Yes, our economy faces a moment of danger and Ministers recognise that. Positive changes have been made, and with a steady hand I believe that we can come out of this quickly. In the Clacton constituency, our economic recovery will centre on local tourism and hospitality businesses. I am delighted by the support that is now put in place to help get these vital local businesses back on their feet as quickly as possible. Giles Watling Member of Parliament

County Matters Dear Residents Three months has passed quickly and I would like to start by showing my appreciation to the many volunteers here in Tendring who have helped residents in these strange times. TDC generously gave each councillor £1,000 to help those organisations who were helping the community during the lockdown but struggling financially. Gemma and I spent ours on the following: £500 to St Johns Church and £500 to Veterans Breakfast Club both of who provided hot meals for residents who were self isolating and had no support. £400 to Community Transport who provided transport for vital medical appointments, arranging for volunteers to shop for people who are self isolating, picking up Click & Collect shopping orders and welfare checks on residents. £500 to CVST who organised an army of volunteers to deal with absolutely everything residents needed. Finally £100 to Tendring Eldercare who provided food parcels for residents across the District. I want to push an announcement from TDC for those concerned about shielding which officially ended on 31 July. TDC will continue to offer its helpline to maintain its support for vulnerable people who do not have friends or family nearby to help. You can get direct help by calling 01255 686700 or emailing tendringshieldassistance@tendringdc.gov.uk. Residents can call between 10am-3pm on weekdays, and outside of those times leave a message. The service will be able to help vulnerable residents register for priority delivery slots, collect medication for those unable to do so themselves and with no support network, support people advised to selfisolate by Test and Trace and give advice on booking a Covid-19 test, and signpost to other support groups on other topics.

Speeding is on the rise. It was always a problem but Covid -19 has meant clearer roads and has encouraged “the boy racer“. I tried to get some speed tests done along the seafront. I got this response. “It is not possible for the LHP to order any pedestrian volume or speed surveys. This is currently due to the fact that traffic flows are not currently at normal levels, and results will not give a true representation.” That was kind of my point! My frustration with ECC continues. I finally heard back about the pedestrian barriers that I asked for on Frinton Road near the school crossing point. There has been a policy change slipped in quietly under the table. HPN 050 states “…should not be used in residential areas, except at junctions or crossing points with a history of pedestrian collisions.” So basically residents, and in this case probably children, need to be knocked over before they will consider a barrier. Having read the Policy, cover to cover, It’s clearly cost over safety in my opinion and I will be taking this further to get an exception if possible. Some good news, Cllr Kevin Bentley has issued a new initiative in an email to me in which he says “I now therefore invite you to provide the highways service with a new list of up to 50 road (carriageway) defects (potholes) in your Division that you would most like to see repaired.” This is really good news as there are many potholes (probably more than 50) that need filling in Holland. It would help if you could email me with any that you would like to see filled. Well, I have run out of room. All I have to say is stay safe and that I am here for you, not just for ECC matters but for anything I can help with. See you at the next meeting. Kind regards Councillor Mark Stephenson Essex County Councillor for Clacton East Tel: 07775537722

Sail of the Century

The exposed coastline of Holland on Sea has afforded little protection to those who yearn to go to sea in small boats and indulge in the sport of sailing, but after the Second World War sailing, as a hobby, began to grow; previously it had long been considered a rich man’s amusement. One or two residents saw the possibility and local brothers-inlaw Terry Baker and Stan Camp, plus Ron Childs and Norman Seymour, made contact with Clacton Urban District Council (CUDC) about a small site, nestled under the cliffs to the immediate west of Star Point, which might be suitable as the base for a sailing club. The Council agreed this site and a compound was formed by rolling large chunks of concrete, from a recently demolished Second World War observation post, down the cliff and so, in 1951, the Clacton on Sea Sailing Club was formed. The first Commodore was Tim Webster who later became Chairman of the Holland Residents Association (and later still Chairman of CUDC). The Club grew and both races and cruises were organised. In 1954 the Club held its first Regatta but this nearly didn’t happen as, at the time, it required the permission of CUDC and one Councillor - the Reverend Asquith Baker felt that whilst a regatta might be a good thing, “if a good thing interfered with a better thing then it becomes a bad thing”. He added that “on Sunday afternoons hundreds of people give their time to inculcating moral principals into the minds of young people, and their work is of great value; therefore the Regatta should not be held on a Sunday”. He was unsuccessful in his attempt to stop the regatta which turned out to be a huge success. In 1957 one of the Club members, Alf Self, having built himself a General Purpose fourteen foot open dinghy, decided to sail to France from the Club. Accompanied by fellow Club member Harry Webb (not the Harry Webb that changed his name to Cliff Richard!), who lived at Thurso Cottage, Kings Parade, as crew, the two set off in “ODTAA” (“One Damn Thing After Another”) on Monday 29th July and headed for Burnham on Crouch where the two stayed overnight. The next day the pair made Herne Bay in Kent and the following day tacked to Margate, reaching Dover on Thursday, where they bought a yellow duster from

The Clacton Sailing Club in 1953, alongside the pumping station hut that still sits there to this day.

Woolworths to fly as the international code flag Q which signals “My vessel is healthy and I request free pratique”. Bad weather prevented “ODTAA” leaving Dover until Saturday when Alf and Harry decided to try making Calais, but they shipped a lot of water on the journey. The winds proved not to be favourable so they changed course for Boulogne, but on the way spotted a charming fishing village and pulled ashore at Ambleteuse, where they were warmly welcomed by local fishermen and villagers. A local solicitor insisted “ODTAA” should be taken to his house so that she would not get damaged on the beach and promptly fetched a jeep to tow the boat. On the way “ODTAA’s” mast brought down all the telephone wires so it was decided to take her back to the beach. Meanwhile Alf and Harry found accommodation in a local hotel. As the winds were favourable on Monday the two began their homeward trip and made Ramsgate, a distance of 42 miles from Ambleteuse, with their yellow duster and CSC pennant flying proudly. The little boat went into the harbour where she was cleared by customs, costing Alf 9d (less than 4p) in harbour fees. Because of the August Bank Holiday the weary crew were unable to locate accommodation but found refuge at the Ramsgate Sailing Club. They set off next morning but once outside Ramsgate harbour the wind dropped and they had to row for several miles. That night they slept at Margate and continued to Holland on Sea the next morning, arriving back at the Club at about eight in the evening; a journey by small boat that has never been repeated. Congratulations

Doris Melton - was 100 years old on Friday 8th May (on the VE Day Anniversary Day). All her neighbours went out into the road at 12 O’clock and stood (social distancing rules were obviously observed) to sing and wish her a happy birthday. Her daughter, grand-children and great grand-children were fortunately able to visit her.

Holland on Sea Branch of the Royal British Legion The Holland on Sea Branch of the Royal British Legion held a short ceremony at St Bartholomew’s Church on Saturday 15th August to commemorate the 75th anniversary of ending of the war against Japan at 11:00 observing a two minute silence to honour those that lost their lives during this conflict. We are still restricted from holding formal meetings due to Covid-19 but as and when restrictions are lifted I will place notices in social media and notice boards when we can start up again. Festive Light up in Holland on Sea 2020

This year we will NOT be holding a Christmas Fayre. Judging by the HRA will be made from the public footpath. NO ENTRY WILL BE MADE ONTO THE PREMISES OR BE EXPECTED (in line with Covid 19). ENTRY; Anyone who wishes to take part is to REGISTER at the Emporium Shop in Kings Avenue BETWEEN the 1st and 18th of December 2020. Cost will be £2.00p for each household. Clubs Holland 129 Club is a friendly Ladies Club that normally meets at Holland-on-Sea Methodist Church Hall in King’s Avenue on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm. The Club was set up originally as a Young Wives group by the founding member Ann Dover in her home in 129 Fleetwood Avenue – hence the name of our Club. There are many residents over the years who are still, or have been in the past, Members. As we are all affected by the Coronavirus crisis, it makes long-term planning impossible at the moment. We have no idea when meeting halls will be open for large numbers. Until Government guidance is relaxed regarding social distancing and other regulations for Halls, we cannot hold our monthly meetings until we are advised by the Church hall management. We would have been celebrating our Emerald ( 55th) Anniversary in June 2020 with a birthday party and entertainment but I am sure we will not let that special anniversary go unmarked when we do meet again. Every year in June we hold our Annual Rose Competition. This year, those members of our Club who have email were invited to submit a photo of one of their roses. I share with you just one of the collages circulated – all the roses were just fabulous this year. For further details, please contact either Carole Parmenter 01255 813315.

Christian Message Dear Reader, It’s very difficult to write a message to a community in the midst of a crisis such as we are in because by the time you read this my hope is that the circumstances of our lives will be showing signs of beginning to ease; though I think normality may look very different going forward and perhaps we will appreciate things we had previously taken for granted- like the hairdressers being open for a start! Somewhere in all this is a stark warning because despite the continuous use of the word unprecedented I think we have been here before, the Old Testament is filled with stories of famine, war, natural disaster and plagues that force communities to come together in the face of adversity to overcome a common enemy. Even in the last 100 years history is riddled with challenging times. Various people have said it is almost Biblical and it is, my hope is that we (myself included) will spend less and save more; be less anxious about things we cannot change and focus on things we can; watch less television and perhaps talk to the family more; consider what is really important and be thankful. St Paul in his letter to the Hebrews says in chapter 11, verse 1 “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” We were not put on this earth to have this picture perfect life, we are here to be challenged, to face adversity for it is by these hardships that we discover what real friendship is. But don’t take my word for it because Archbishop Desmond Tutu is so much better at this than me he said ‘Good is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death.’ He doesn’t ask us to feel joyful, just to hold on to the fact that this is true. Anyone who knows me well will know I have a deep love of poetry and this is a poem from a self-published collection by Mary Lean. Although it is entitled Advent 2001 the message of hope is one we all need to hear at this time. There is light Even in the shortest days Of this dark year Even though the smoke Of the burning buildings Dims it; Even though the tears Of the grieving families Blind us; Even though the cries Of the refugees Drown it; Even though the bells Maybe just the hand That lights one candle;

Maybe just the eye That sees one star; Maybe just the choice That turns one life; Maybe just the faith That won’t let go. There is light In this darkness Hope in this gloom As we wait for God’s coming - and he waits for ours. Ring out in loss and pain. Susan Wiggins, St Bart’s Church

From Holland on Sea Methodist Church Dear Fellow Residents, Like most Churches we are closed at present, but hope to resume services in September /October. Please see church notice board in Kings Avenue for updates. We do hold ‘zoom’ services on Sunday morning at 11.00am and these have been well attended over the Tendring peninsula.

Holland Public Hall What a sad time, as you are aware all the activities in the Public Hall have been suspended due to Covid 19, it feels like we have wiped out a whole year. But we are currently fighting our way through all the rules and regulations to see whether we can start up activities in the Hall, with such diverse activities that take place in our one building it’s quite a headache. We have to keep positive as so many people rely on the groups to meet their friends, keep fit - mentally and physically and to just socialise. So, onwards and upwards everything crossed that we can work something out and open up again. Keep safe and well. Thank you for all your support.

Surgery Update As everyone is no doubt aware Drs Shamshad and Qurban (from Ranworth Surgery) took over the running of Frinton Road Surgery, Epping Close and Green Elms in Jaywick earlier this year from the much “loved” ACE. Little did they know that within two months they would be dealing with the dreaded Covid-19. I have to say a big thank you to them and their staff for keeping the surgery open and running effectively. I am aware that Epping Close surgery has been closed during this period. This was for two reasons; it provided a sanitised environment should Frinton Road become infected and it also allowed the renal unit (whose patients are extremely vulnerable) to operate safely. Much has been happening in the background. The work on Kennedy House is moving forward and should be ready in March next Year (see opposite), the tender process to run the surgery permanently has started and recruitment for specialist GPs is also underway. I have been involved with the recruitment of one GP who hopefully will be starting in October. The triage system has been in operation since the start and appears to work well (at least I haven’t received any complaints). There are still issues with prescriptions and the management are in the process of streamlining medication reviews to be carried out annually in the month of each patients’ birth. They are looking at issuing 12 prescriptions to a pharmacy of choice so that there will be no need to post repeat scripts into a box at the surgery. This is still work in progress but hopefully by the next magazine I will have details as to how this will work. Of course, special arrangements will be needed for patients who take “controlled” drugs. It is hoped that these new procedures will be in place before the move to Kennedy Way. The project team for the move are aware that it is difficult for some patients to get to Kennedy Way and the bus company is not prepared to re-route any existing services. It is therefore hoped that the Tendring CVS will be able to provide some sort of shuttle service from Frinton Road to Kennedy Way. I have to say that, so far, I have been impressed with the new management. They consider that patient needs are paramount. A refreshing change. Long may it last. Rita Garnett Health and Wellbeing

The service remains at the forefront of Stroke support for both stroke survivors and their families across Tendring. During COVID-19 , centre based activities have been closed and this has given time to redesign what will be offered in the future. A stroke rehabilitation nurse works from the centre and will provide rehabilitation advice and information. Physio sessions will be introduced as well as new therapies/activities. As the service prepares to open it’s doors, it will do so with 1:1 sessions to start with. Tendring Specialist Stroke services are also looking for volunteers to support the charity, please contact us if you have a few hours to spare and would like to support stroke patients locally. The service also runs a book/charity stall outside the community centre during the week, when weather and staffing allows. We look forward to seeing you. The team at the service are still working at 85 Frinton Road and are happy to give advice and support28 and can be contacted on 01255 815905.

A short story . . . A man walks into a pub and says to the landlord “Three pints of bitter please” He is duly served sits at a table by the window and consumes all three pints. The following week at the same time on the same day of the week the man comes in again and orders three pints of bitter and duly drinks all three. The landlord then enquires why he orders the three pints of beer and then proceeds to drink them. “Well says the man I have just moved here and I used to drink with my two brothers so when work commitments caused this separation we agreed to drink each other’s health every week. And so it goes on until one day he only orders two pints! The Landlord is stricken what should he do? The following week when the man enters the pub and orders two pints the Landlord says “I am really sorry . . . about your brother!” “My brother?” says the man. “Yes” says the Landlord, “Um the two pints, I hope he didn’t suffer too much?” The man laughs “No he’s fine, it’s Lent and I’ve given up the beer for Lent!”
