The new Specification is written using Strands and Learning Outcomes and is supported by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Your Question: Can I be sure that I’m covering the three Strands and the Learning Outcomes and that my teaching is supported by the CEFR? Our Answer: YES. Each unit in Ça Marche ! has a corresponding scheme of work in the Teacher’s Resource Book outlining this detail, which is vital for subject department planning. French will now be taught for 200 hours and the final examination will be at common level. Your Question: Will this book help me in a common level class with varying abilities? Our Answer: YES. With a very strong focus on AfL, there are lots of opportunities for students to take control of their learning, while resources in the Teacher’s Resource Book allow for differentiation in the classroom so all students can access the language. There will be two Classroom-based Assessments (CBAs – both with an oral component), one Assessment Task (10%) and a final written examination (90%). Your Question: With oral presentations now compulsory, is there enough oral work to prepare my students? Our Answer: YES. With lots of oral work, pronunciation tips, audio and video material as well as pair/group work throughout the book, students have every opportunity to build this vital language skill. Your Question: Does the portfolio really prepare students for the CBA 2? Our Answer: YES. The student portfolio accompanies the units, giving students the opportunity to practise what they’ve learned, but it includes clear success criteria so students can see what they need to do to succeed.

Assessment for Learning is recommended as the overall teaching approach. Your Question: Does this book use AfL strategies that really work? Our Answer: YES. With clear learning intentions, learning tips, regular objectives, self-assessment checklists and reflection questions, Ça Marche ! guides teacher and student through the learning. Your Question: Does this book provide enough guidance? Our Answer: YES. The structure, features and approach of the textbook and its ancillary material, and the extensive Teacher’s Resource Book, will guide you expertly through every step of the new Specification. The TRB clearly explains the Junior Cycle Framework, the Specification and the connection between it and the CEFR. Its unit-by-unit resources, along with the rich digital material, will help you ably manage the common level approach in your classrooms, and to embed in your First Year students all of the skills needed for the final assessments and exams.
