This Holiday Season As you begin to think about the gifts you are going to buy for your loved ones, exit out of those Amazon browsers & stay away from the big department stores. Give back to your local economy and purchase gifts at local businesses near you. You could make a major impact, and help determine whether our local businesses will thrive in 2022. Rhode Island business owners have worked extra hard this year to provide quality products, services, and pleasant shopping & dining experiences in our community. Supporting them during the upcoming bustling season is a way in which we can give back and show our gratitude.

Ocean State Jewelers If you want to get a little personal with your gift, Ocean State Jewelers has a wide variety of jewelry to shop. Visit their location at 1395 Atwood Ave, Johnston, and get a one-on-one shopping experience and a gorgeous gift for the deserving man or woman in your life! The various lines that they hold are guaranteed to appeal to you!

Kamco Have someone in your life that has a niche for construction? Stop by Kamco and browse from the 100,000 pieces of state-of-the-art equipment that they hold, and choose the tool that is most desired! Visit their location at 37 Amflex Drive, Cranston!

RI Engine Have a marine lover on your list? Beyond their extensive supply of marine diesel parts, Rhode Island Engine has a showroom filled with everything from top-of-the-line waterproof gear to stocking stuffers like hats and gloves. Visit 79 State Street, Narragansett! Gift cards are an easy gift that everyone loves, no matter how old you are. Almost every retail location, restaurant, and service offer a gift card in any chosen amount. This is a gift that you know won’t go to waste because your loved one can pick out what they want, and you won’t have to stress about finding something perfect for everyone! Whether it be Ocean State Jewelers or Rhode Island Engine, let your recipient choose the item of their choosing! Don’t spend all your time waiting in lines and stressing over the “perfect gifts” this holiday season. If this year has taught us anything, it’s that we need to support one another and show we care. Ditch the online ordering, and find a unique gift for your loved ones right in the little state of Rhode Island!

by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro

Donna McCarthy is an artist and educator residing in Southern Rhode Island. She received her undergraduate degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York and her Master’s Degree from Northern Arizona University. She has lived in and taught art for over 35 years in Arizona, New York and Rhode Island mostly in underserved rural or inner-city schools. Four years ago, she fulfilled her lifetime goal of moving to Rhode Island, when her daughter Helena decided to go to Dean College in nearby Massachusetts. Last year Donna and two of her colleagues began publishing a children’s digital magazine, The Bubblah written by and for children from prereaders to high school throughout the English speaking world. It includes activities, stories, art, recipes, physical fitness suggestions, videos, games and puzzles. Children (and adults) are encouraged to submit their writing and art work for consideration for publication. All written material will be reviewed by a professional editor who will provide feedback to authors and, if the article is accepted, iterate with the authors until the article is ready for publication. The youngest artist published was 4 years old. The magazine also sponsors contests to encourage students to develop art and articles suitable for publication. The magazine is published 4 times per year and is available, by subscription at no charge. Donna has published seven books for children. Four of these are in the Some Peoples™ series for pre-readers, one is a stand-alone book for pre-readers (Not Your Everyday Alphabet) and two are for primary school students. The pre-reader Some Peoples books include books about grandmas, grandpas, dogs and teachers. The books for primary school children include: The Ballerina with Really Big Feet and Toenail Soup (a book of silly poems).

Art & Reading

Donna Offers some suggestions on helping your child’s development: • Be sure to include art education and creative endeavors in your child’s activities to help with developing autonomy, cognitive ability, decision making, empathy and problem solving • Balance screen time with tactile activities such as reading, outdoor play and manipulating non-electronic things with their hands. • Help your children to dream by fostering imagining. Try to help them see a pathway to reaching their dreams rather than discouraging them because ideas may seem unrealistic. • Encourage your children to be philanthropic and do things for others such as planting flowers, reading stories to the elderly, preparing care packages for the less fortunate. • Read something every night, even if the reading involves comic books. You may wish to subscribe to the Bubblah, read back issues of the magazine or request an educational games, reading or art workshop for your school or youth group in Rhode Island, Massachusetts or Connecticut via the website http://www.TheBubblah.Online. You may also visit TheBubblah pages on FaceBook, Instagram and TikTok. There is no charge for any of The Bubblah offerings. Businesses which may wish to partner with Donna may also contact her via the website. You may also wish to purchase some of Donna’s books at http://www.MissMacBooks. Com (or via Amazon.Com). I would like to thank Industrial Consultant Dr. Margarita Posada Cossuto for helpful comments.

As the temperature continues to fall, and the twinkle lights begin decorating the bare trees, it becomes apparent that the shopping season is on its way.

Give Back

The best part of the holiday season? Giving back, of course! Whether it’s a monetary donation, an act of service, or even just a nice gesture, giving back will make you feel warm inside, even with the dropping temperatures.

Monetary Donations

Do you have a particular organization that means a lot to you? Think about sending a monetary or gift donation to help them carry out their mission. No donation is too small from $5 to $500, donations are treasured no matter what the amount. From helping out armed forces to putting together a gift box for less fortunate children, giving back is rewarding in more ways than one, consider doing your part and make a donation this holiday season.

Volunteer Your Time

Taking the time to volunteer at a local charity is a great way to spread positivity as the holidays approach. Volunteers are needed everywhere - especially during a time like this. We recommend picking a day or two out of your calendar to make a trip to your favorite charitable organization with your family to help out in any way you’re needed. Whether it’s a soup kitchen, an animal shelter, or even your public library, your assistance will definitely be appreciated and you’ll feel pretty amazing afterward, too!

Simple Acts of Kindness

Giving back doesn’t have to be monetary or time-consuming. In fact, random acts of kindness are some of the most simple AND rewarding ways to spread the holiday cheer. Do you have a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while or is going through a particularly difficult time? Send them a quick text letting them know they’re in your thoughts. Hold a door open for the person behind you as you head into the office. Help a shopper with their hands full carry their bags to their car after your next trip to the grocery store. The possibilities are endless.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

— Mahatma Gandhi

Bread Pudding

Instead of re-heating and re-serving boring leftovers, transform the remnants of your feast and extend the holiday spirit to the day after, with these fantastic recipes!

Ingredients: - 2 1/2 cups of stuffing - 4 cups of stale 1 inch bread cubes - 1 1/2 cups half n half - 1 - 2 pears - 1- 2 sprigs of rosemary - 5 eggs

- 1/4 tsp salt - Some cranberry sauce - Extra chopped parsley - Leftover turkey shredded - 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions: 1. Place half and half in a saucepan with the rosemary. Bring it to a boil and turn off the heat. Add the shredded turkey and let the herbs steep for about 20 - 30 min. Then remove the rosemary sprig. 2. Preheat oven to 350°F, and butter a 9 x 5 inch oven proof dish. 3. Break the eggs into a bowl, and whisk them with the cooled rosemary infused milk mixture and turkey and salt. 4. In a large bowl, place the stuffing, bread cubes, pears and parsley and mix to combine. Add the custard (milk, egg, turkey mix) and mix well. Pour half of this into the buttered dish. Pour some cranberry sauce on top, and place the other half of the bread pudding mix over it. Push down and leave for a few minutes to help the bread pieces soak up the custard. 6. Spread some more cranberry sauce on top and sprinkle cheese and salt over it. Cover with foil and bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake for a further 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and the custard has set. Serve warm, with maple syrup.

IS YOUR HOME HOLIDAY READY? Santa may be coming down the chimney this holiday season but that doesn’t mean we want septic coming up your home’s pipes! Avoid a messy situation this season and prepare ahead of time.

Ronnie’s Professional Services put together a quick checklist to get you through the holiday season (and sorry, no, they can’t help with the gift shopping!) Pump your septic prior to having guests over. The last thing you want to do is have a septic emergency pop up just as you and your guests sit down to eat! Properly dispose of grease. That holiday ham sure is delicious, but you should never dump the grease down the drain. It can cause damage to your system! Dump grease in a glass jar and throw it out. Cut down on water usage. Try to limit the amount of water you use, for example only run the dishwasher when it is full. Flush with care. An important reminder to only flush natural waste down the toilet. We get it, nobody likes fruitcake, but don’t flush it!

Typically septic pumpings should be performed every 2-3 years, but with COVID-19 more people have been staying home the past 2 years. This means there has been less on-the-go outside of the house, and more “go” in the home. Consider booking a pumping with Ronnie’s soon! Schedule online at or call (401) 294-9487. November 20th marks the beginning of the Holidays at the Mansions, with the Breakers, Marble House, and the Elms being adorned with Christmas trees, wreaths, flowers, and so much more. Hasbro, Inc. Chances are when you were little you played with a Hasbro toy at some point. Hasbro, Inc. traces its origin to an enterprise founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1923 by Henry, Hilal, and Herman Hassenfeld, brothers who had emigrated to the United States from Poland. The company began by selling textile remnants. They soon expanded to selling school supplies such as pencils and pencil boxes. Once they became profitable with this, they began selling modeling clay and some smaller toys. By 1942, Hasbro had become primarily a toy company and the first major hit toy they sold was Mr. Potato Head. Hasbro also makes G.I. Joe, Tonka trucks, Cabbage Patch Kids, Transformers, and owns licenses for Sesame Street characters. It is no surprise Hasbro is the second-largest toymaker in the world, but who would of thought they were located right here in the smallest state! | (800) 255-5516

New England-Based Product! The Dangers of Road Salt

Safe Road Services Steps Up

According to Smithsonian Magazine, an estimated 22 million tons of salt are scattered on U.S. roads every year. To put that into perspective, that’s about 130 lbs. of salt for every American.

SAFE MELT™ is a powerful de-icing product from Safe Road Services that can be used to reduce the amount of harmful chloride ions introduced to the environment from road salt by as much as 50%. Made from calcium chloride and a forestry byproduct of the paper-pulping process called lignin, this de-icer passes some of the toughest environmental safety tests in the country. It is even safe enough to eat as demonstrated on WGME CBS News in Portland, Maine - although we don’t recommend it.

When the ice and snow melts, all of that salt has to go somewhere - which happens to be a big problem for waterways, soil, and our infrastructure. When road salt dissolves, it splits into sodium and chloride ions. When those ions run off roads and into the nearby environment, they can cause serious damage. According to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, these ions can enter freshwater bodies of water through runoff and even seep into groundwater, affecting drinking water. Chloride from road salts can be toxic to aquatic life. On top of that, it can affect wildlife and pets who can often ingest road salt. It also damages the vegetation that wildlife feed on by changing the chemical structure of the soil. If you’ve noticed how road salt can corrode the paint on your vehicle if it’s not clean, it’s easy to see how road salt damages roads, bridges, vehicle parts, and equipment after years of heavy salt use. According to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, “The cost of corrosion damage and corrosion protection practices for highways and the automobile industry has been reported to cost a staggering 16-19 billion dollars per year.” That’s where Safe Road Services comes in to make a difference.

The future of ice melters, SAFE MELT™, is effective to pavement temperatures of zero degrees Fahrenheit. It is biodegradable, low toxicity, safe to handle, and cost-competitive with other ice melters in the industry. Not only is it better for the environment, but it has received glowing testimonials from the highway and department of public works officials who have used it. “We have been using Safe Melt for the past 8 years and are very satisfied with the product thus far... Using this product means the difference between having to stay later and use more salt or going home to get that much-needed rest. It tends to bind to the asphalt very well and lasts longer than salt alone,” wrote Jim Jones, a foreman who cares for the roads in Brewster, MA. “We often get comments from other surrounding towns on how well Brewster’s roads are. The use of this product has helped greatly in the response to public safety and with school delays and closures,” Jones continued.
