Serenade for Strings Norman Leyden

Known for his thousands of film, radio, and symphonic arrangements, prolific composer Norman Leyden published this suite for string orchestra in 1971. The four brief, contrasting movements blend classical and baroque traditions with stylistic harmonies popular to the era.
Fire in the Forge Ted Allen
Marked "Heavy Speed Metal," this work is an intense cello and bass driven rocker that makes the "string metal" genre accessible to high school students. Launched by the Finnish cello quartet Apocalyptica in 1993, string metal adapts heavy guitar stylings to the bowed strings.
Gymnopedie No. 1
Erik Satie/ Arr. Klotman
Gymnopedie No. 1 was inspired by the ancient Greek practice of “gymnopaidia,” meaning “songs of games.” Satie sought to imitate the oddly structured combination of singing and dancing which was used to celebrate victory in ancient Greece.
Minecraft Daniel Rosenfeld/ Arr. Ford
Featuring six melodies from the popular video game, this medley will take you from the stage to the computer screen. Titles included in this medley include Minecraft (Main Theme), Mice on Venus, Sweden, Subwoofer Lullaby, Wet Hands, and Haggstrom.

Fire Dance

Soon Hee Newbold
Since the beginning of time, man has used fire for survival, technological advances, and ceremonies. The Polynesians dance with sticks of fire in exciting luaus; Bulgarians have a traditional barefoot dance on hot, glowing embers; and other cultures use fire in spiritual rituals and celebrations. As a destructive force, fire is deadly and unpredictable as it takes on a life of its own.
Serenade Triste
Richard Cohen
Although the dictionary defines “triste” as sad or melancholy, the word has a more subtle meaning at times. Serenade Triste tries to capture in music the emotions that we call bittersweet. The music is geared to express how one feels when saying goodbye to an old friend, not knowing if you will ever meet again. It is about watching autumn leaves fall while remembering a wonderful summer vacation. It suggests troubles and conflicts in our lives that do not always resolve completely. Bittersweet emotions are very personal feelings which cannot be shared or expressed with mere words.
Brook Green Suite
Gustav Holst
The Brook Green Suite for Strings was written in 1933 during Gustav Holst's stay in the hospital (where he was to die in May 1934). It was written for his students in the junior orchestra at the Saint Paul's Girls School. Holst wanted to write a work in a contemporary, mature style that was easy enough for his pupils to perform, while he felt they deserved better than simple orchestrations from originals or 'watered down' pieces aimed at younger players. This work was most likely named after Brook Green because that was the location of his wedding to his wife Isobel in 1901.
Phantom Tangos
Brian Balmages
This serious work relies heavily on various elements of the tango, though set into a more contemporary framework. While the title mainly refers to the way various tangos come and go (through multiple transitional devices), it also references the opening and closing sections, which include a "phantom sound" through the use of mild dissonance and sudden dynamic changes that seemingly appear out of nowhere.
