First Look celebrates the newest additions to the Gibbes Museum of Art’s holdings. Since January 2024, the Museum has acquired twenty-six new works of art through gifts, bequests, and purchases made possible by our generous supporters. A suite of sweetgrass baskets by Mary Jackson, photographs by Susan Meiselas, and paintings by Purvis Young and Reynier Llanes will be on view for the first time.

REMBRANDT: MASTERPIECES IN BLACK AND WHITE — PRINTS FROM THE REMBRANDT HOUSE MUSEUM

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) was a pioneering artist whose innovation extended beyond painting to more than three hundred etchings. Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White, organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, showcases the full range of his etching work and explores Rembrandt’s lasting impact on printmaking through works by later artists, including James McNeill Whistler and Pablo Picasso.

“Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White—Prints from the Rembrandt House Museum” is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam. The exhibition is generously supported by Betsy Shack Barbanell and Monique Schoen Warshaw. Discover the amazing details and definition Rembrandt achieved in his, sometimes very small, prints with Epco Runia, Ph.D., exhibition curator and Head of Collections at the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam. Runia will discuss Rembrandt’s techniques and delve deeply into a selection of prints on view in this major exhibition.

PICTURING RESISTANCE: THE EVOLVING IMAGERY OF HARRIET TUBMAN

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 | 6PM

How can art shape resistance, and what separates the mythology of a movement from the individuals who lived it? Inspired by Picturing Freedom, this conversation with artist Terry Plater and scholar Janell Hobson explores the evolving imagery of Harriet Tubman and how artistic imagination connects us to history, memory, and progress.

CAFÉ SOCIETY | OPEN MIC NIGHT AT THE GIBBES

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7 | 6–7:30PM

Drawing on themes from our Rembrandt exhibition and inspired by the storytelling series The Moth, guests are invited to share a three to five minute story, poem, song, or performance exploring “self-portraiture” and the ways art shapes and reflects identity. The evening will also feature hand-picked guest artists as the reception and lecture halls transform into an after-hours comedy club-style space.

Join Society 1858 for a tour of our Rembrandt exhibition followed by a live demonstration and talk exploring various printmaking techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own print to take home. Lights snacks and drinks will be served.
