JULY 2024 – JUNE 2025

THE GIBBES MUSEUM ENHANCES LIVES THROUGH ART BY ENGAGING PEOPLE OF EVERY BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE WITH ART AND ARTISTS OF ENDURING QUALITY, BY COLLECTING AND PRESERVING ART THAT TOUCHES CHARLESTON, AND BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN, DISCOVER, ENJOY, AND BE INSPIRED BY THE CREATIVE PROCESS.

H. ALEXANDER RICH President & CEO

MINDY HONG Chair, Board of Directors
In the life of every organization there are momentous years, and this past year at the Gibbes Museum of Art has been an especially momentous one. From major exhibitions, gallery renovations, and new staff additions to incredible sold-out events, a change of leadership, and the long-dreamed-of purchase of a building next door, July 2024 to June 2025 underlined every aspect of the mission of our storied museum while heralding — and presaging — a stunning next chapter in its nearly 170-year history.
The 2024–2025 season included an array of exhibitions that drew wide and diverse audiences to the Gibbes. In addition to the evergreen allure of our permanent collection galleries, uniquely-curated, temporary exhibitions like Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Design and the Gibbes Collection, which juxtaposed fashion with art from our collection; Beeple, which brought the ever-evolving experimental world of A.I. to the Museum; and Picturing Freedom: Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid, which opened in May to wide acclaim and just days after scholar Edda Fields-Black won a Pulitzer Prize for the book that inspired our show, continued to push visitors to think differently about their — and our shared — worlds. With featured exhibitions like these, the Gibbes’ reputation grows and grows, affirming our place not merely as Charleston’s art museum but also as one of the premier art museums anywhere, holding its own next to any other “big city museum” nationwide. Indeed, the exceptional response to the past season drives the Museum team to keep exploring new avenues for learning through art and to bring to life the history of art, past and present, regional and global, all within the unmatched space of the Gibbes.
The past season also presented an incredible array of events, many long-standing and beloved traditions and others more recent but becoming Gibbes traditions in their own right. Day in and out, our dedicated team, our esteemed Board and Board committees, and our stalwart auxiliary groups, the Women’s Council and Society 1858, strive to build an exciting calendar of programs that seek always to expand our audiences’ horizons. Each program and event aims to entice visitors and community members to become more deeply involved in the world of art and in the life of the Museum. In addition to year-round tours, lectures, and hands-on art classes (including our always-sold-out summer camp), this year’s most popular signature events included Halloween fun at our first annual Gibbes and Ghouls; the thirteenth installment of our Distinguished Lecture Series, featuring awardwinning film director Spike Lee (to massive crowds); the ever-hip Winter Party, hosted by Society 1858; and our fourth annual Art Charleston week, which, with the combination of the Art of Design luncheon, hosted by the Women’s Council and featuring Nell Diamond, the Founder and CEO of Hill House Home, and Gibbes on the Street, has become an annual must-attend city event.
In its sixteenth year, the Society 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art continues to cement the Gibbes’ historic passion for celebrating and supporting the work of Southern artists. The nominations for the Prize keep growing each year — and the talents of the artists evaluated and selected astound our juries. 2024’s Prize winner Demond Melancon is a rapidly rising art-world star, whose art practice centers around the Black Masking Culture of New Orleans. Melancon’s elaborate work brings together centuries-old artistic tradition with contemporary Black culture and hosting him at the Gibbes and exploring his meticulous methods at our annual Amy P. McCoy Forum proved both eye-opening and resoundingly moving.
Looking back at a very busy year, the 2024–25 season began with summer renovations and updates to our store, the Baker Gallery, and our classrooms, setting the stage for the Gibbes’ biggest transformation to date. In January, after decades of hope (and brilliant
work behind the scenes by a cadre of the Museum’s most ardent champions), the Gibbes acquired the vacant former South Carolina Electric & Gas building at 141 Meeting Street, immediately to the north of the Museum’s current building at 135 Meeting. A joint purchase with the city of Charleston, which also owns half of our present structure, the 1878 Palladian-style building was designed by revered architect E.B. White and began its life as the Carolina Gas Light Company. The building will be linked literally to the Museum’s 1905 building via an elevated bridge, connecting the second-floor galleries in both structures. The new wing will add 6,000 additional square feet of space to the Museum, expanding our exhibition gallery footprint significantly while also allowing us to doubledown on our commitment to arts education, with the wing’s entire first floor imagined as a dedicated education center. The capital campaign kicks into high gear in 2026, with a projected opening of the new wing in early 2027.
Each chapter at the Gibbes seeks a fine balance between what was, what is, and what will be, and the close of the 2024–25 season initiated the beginning of this next new chapter for the Museum. To be certain, this summer marked a moment of great transition, as the tenure of one leader of the Gibbes segued into the start of another. After forty-four years at the Gibbes and seventeen at its helm, Angela Mack announced her planned retirement from her position as President and CEO; during her time directing the Museum, the Gibbes evolved into one of the region’s most revered institutions, and the legacy she left upon the Museum is indelible.
As the new President and CEO and as the new chair of the Board of Directors, we stepped into leadership beginning July 1, 2025, grateful for the path set out before us by Angela and outgoing Board Chair Spencer Lynch and for the opportunity to guide the Gibbes, its intrepid team, and its devoted community of volunteers into our next promising era.
Thank you for your ongoing support and celebration of our city’s art museum: the Gibbes and its future look strong.

For decades, the dense architectural landscape of Charleston’s historic district has posed challenges for the Gibbes expansion needs. A $1.2 million expansion in 1978 followed by a $17 million renovation in 2016 maximized the Museum’s current site, which includes the beautiful Lenhardt Garden. The quest, therefore, to secure the adjacent E.B. White building at 141 Meeting Street built by Charleston Gas Light Company in 1878 became more critical to the footprint of the Gibbes. The Palladian style architecture of this Class 1 building complements perfectly the Beaux Arts style of the Gibbes built twenty-seven years later. Together, these buildings exemplify the grand architectural achievements in the historic district. After a 15-year effort, hundreds of hours of conversations, and the generosity of willing partners, the acquisition finally came to fruition in January 2025. Thanks to Charleston investor and philanthropist Ben Navarro and Beemok Hospitality Collection, which acquired the property in 2022, 141 Meeting Street was purchased by the Gibbes and the City of Charleston for $3 million to become a 6,000 square foot expansion for the Museum to enhance the city’s visual arts footprint in the heart of historic downtown Charleston. “It is the best possible outcome,” shares Mayor Cogswell. “We are delighted to partner with the Gibbes to convert this very prestigious building, designed by a famous architect and built by Charleston’s first electric company, into an extension of our one temple to the visual arts, the Gibbes.”
Museums are places where education thrives, and the Gibbes is no exception. Yet today, our ability to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community is limited. With 10,000 objects in our collection, we can display only a small fraction at a time. Our current 3,000-square-foot

gallery space does not accommodate large-scale or experimental works. Educational activities often take place in borrowed spaces, restricting our ability to serve students, teachers, and families.
The acquisition of the historic E.B. White building at 141 Meeting Street changes everything. This 6,000-square-foot expansion, connected to the Gibbes’ 1905 original building by a new architectural bridge that will link the two second-floors of both structures, will provide the Museum with a whole new wing, featuring both new galleries and a state-of-the-art Education Center that together will redefine the visitor and learning experience.
The Education Center will double our capacity to serve school groups, expand teen and adult learning, strengthen partnerships with schools and universities, and ensure that underserved communities have access through scholarships and free programming.
Just as the new gallery spaces will allow us to present bold, largescale, and experimental works, the Education Center will ensure that those experiences translate into transformational learning moments for every visitor. Together, these twin pillars — art and education — will define the future of the Gibbes.

This year marked a defining moment in the Gibbes Museum of Art’s history as we prepared for the retirement of President & CEO Angela D. Mack and announced the appointment of our next President and CEO, H. Alexander Rich, Ph.D. After more than four decades of extraordinary service — including seventeen years at the helm — Mack shared her plans to retire in May 2025, closing a tenure that shaped not only the Museum but also Charleston’s cultural landscape.
Mack first joined the Gibbes in 1981 and quickly became a driving force behind the institution’s growth and national reputation. Her visionary curatorial approach, willingness to confront difficult histories through art, and steadfast commitment to elevating Southern artists transformed the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and community reach. Under her guidance, the Gibbes championed diversity in its collection and leadership, pursued bold and awardwinning exhibitions, and deepened its role as a vital civic resource. Her legacy — a combination of intellectual rigor, fearlessness, and deep care for this community — continues to inspire the Museum’s work today.

In June 2025, the Board announced that, following a comprehensive national search, Dr. H. Alexander Rich would lead the Gibbes into its next era. A museum director, chief curator, scholar, and educator, Dr. Rich brings a record of innovative leadership, global partnerships, and transformative institutional growth. He comes to the Gibbes from the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art at Florida Southern College, where he oversaw a major museum campus and expansion, secured more than $18 million in support, and curated more than sixty acclaimed exhibitions of international scope.
Dr. Rich’s appointment marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Gibbes as the Museum continues its transformative expansion and strengthens its role as a beacon for the arts in the American South. His passion for scholarship, community engagement, and institutional advancement — combined with the enduring foundation built under Mack’s leadership — positions the Gibbes for an ambitious and inspiring future.
Together, these leadership milestones underscore a powerful theme: honoring the past while embracing a bold path forward. The Gibbes Museum of Art stands poised for continued growth, deeper impact, and renewed vision as we move confidently into our next chapter.

Angela D. Mack’s remarkable career at the Gibbes Museum spans over four decades, beginning in 1981 as an associate curator and culminating in her role as President & CEO. Her tenure was defined by visionary leadership, curatorial excellence, and a commitment to expanding the Museum’s reach and impact.
Among her many accomplishments, Angela:
— Organized and oversaw more than 300 exhibitions, including In Pursuit of Refinement: Charlestonians Abroad 1740–1860 and Landscape of Slavery: The Plantation in American Art, which helped position Southern art within the broader American canon.
— Expanded and diversified the Museum’s collection, acquiring works by artists such as Louis Mignot, Benjamin West, Charles White, Edward Hopper, Kara Walker, Mary Jackson, and Fred Wilson.
— Developed and implemented the Gibbes’ first-ever 10-year strategic plan.
— Led a $17.5 million building renovation project that expanded galleries, revolutionized art storage, and reintroduced artmaking into the Museum.
— Authored and contributed to numerous publications and exhibition catalogues, including In Pursuit of Refinement: Charlestonians Abroad 1740–1860, Landscape of Slavery: The Plantation in American Art, and Edward Hopper in Charleston.
Angela's legacy is not only reflected in the physical transformation of the Gibbes Museum but also in the countless artists, scholars, and visitors she has inspired. Her dedication to fostering an inclusive and dynamic cultural community has elevated the Gibbes into a world-class institution and enriched South Carolina’s artistic landscape. Her retirement truly marks the end of an era for the Museum.
The Gibbes strives to present exhibitions and acquire works of art for its collection that touch Charleston while connecting the Museum to the wider world of artists and cultural institutions. Over the course of the year, the Museum presented seven special exhibitions organized by the Gibbes, featuring works from both the permanent collection and an array of museums, archives, and private collections across the country.
We launched the fall exhibition season in celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art with a show featuring salient examples of the Prize winners’ work. The exhibition was heralded by artist Stephen Marc, who said, “it is invaluable to see how the South’s diverse and complex cultural heritage and regional identity are creatively expressed through explorations of everyday life, historical references, and visions of the future.”
In December, the Rotunda galleries were vibrantly activated in collaboration with Mike Winkleman, aka Beeple, and Beeple Studios. Three of the trailblazing digital artist's kinetic sculptures were placed on display.
In response to popular demand, the Gibbes opened its first exhibition exploring art and fashion in January 2025. Statement Pieces was organized in collaboration with Barrett Barrera Projects and juxtaposed works of art from the Gibbes’ permanent collection with contemporary fashion objects by world-renowned designers such as Alexander McQueen, Dapper Dan, and Gucci. The show was featured in Forbes as one of three “fashionable exhibitions to see in Charleston, London, and Paris.”
The final major exhibition of the year, Picturing Freedom: Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid, was inspired by the 2025 Pulitzer Prize-winning book COMBEE by Dr. Edda Fields-Black and the powerful photographs of environmental photographer J Henry Fair. Guest curated by Dr. Vanessa Thaxton-Ward, the show offer a rich visual celebration of Harriet Tubman and the triumphs of freedom seekers, culminating in the 1863 raid. It featured loaned works by Aaron Douglas, Faith Ringold, Stephen Towns, Elizabeth Catlett, and Jacob Lawrence.
The Gibbes also maintains a robust outgoing loan program. This past year, the Museum loaned works to Blowing Rock Art and History Museum for the exhibition Daingerfield & the Tonalist Instinct, the International African American Museum for Creative Journeys, and the North Carolina Museum of Art. Additionally, the Gibbes maintains loans with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the Office of the Mayor of Charleston, Charleston City Hall, Historic Charleston Foundation, City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, Middleton Place Foundation, and the Old Exchange Building.
The Gibbes presented seven special exhibitions in FY2025. The exhibitions were inspired by and connected to the Museum’s four content themes: Conservation and the Environment, Health and Wellness, Innovation, and Social Justice. Each of these themes was explored through the works on view and in dynamic programming that accompanied each exhibition.

This year, the Museum deepened its commitment to accessibility and connection by expanding its roster of free programs for visitors of all ages. From family days inspired by creativity and artist talks to pop-up performances and off-site festivals, these initiatives opened our doors wider than ever.
By removing financial barriers for a new array of offerings, the Museum welcomed thousands of new participants, many experiencing our galleries for the first time. Partnerships with local schools, cultural organizations, and neighborhood groups further strengthened these efforts, ensuring that art remains a shared space for dialogue, creativity, and belonging. Through these free programs, the Museum continues to grow not just as a place to view art, but as a vital community hub — where everyone is invited to engage, create, and connect.

From the clothes we wear to the food we eat, art and creativity surround us daily. This year, inspired by Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Design and the Gibbes Collection, pop-up experiences included a historic costume try-on station with the Charleston Museum, story time with the Charleston County Public Library, a cooking demonstration and tasting with Chef Scholar Kevin Mitchell and The Drizzled Pear, musical performances by School of the Arts students, artfullyinspired yoga, and so much more in the Lenhardt Garden as part of the Garden Expo

Drawing on the themes of the exhibition Reynier Llanes: Passages and inspired by the storytelling series The Moth, guests who had a three to five-minute story, poem, song, or other performance that explored the topic of “passages” — a rite of passage, a physical migration, or some other crossing — were encouraged to stand and deliver! In addition, the evening included several hand-picked guest artists as we transformed the reception and lecture halls into an after-hours open mic-style atmosphere.
The Gibbes Museum hosted a celebration of art, music, and the artist in everyone at the Park Circle Playground. This was a family-friendly event and included live painting from our Visiting Artist Christopher “Kolpeace” Johnson, local musicians, and food trucks. Guests were encouraged to pick up a brush and paint their own masterpieces.
This limited series brought together live electronic music and dance for an unforgettable series of experiences at the Gibbes Museum. Charleston’s first Poet Laureate, Marcus Amaker (performing as tape loop), created spontaneous electronic soundscapes, while performing artist, past Gibbes’ Visiting Artist, and scholar Dr. Kate March moved through each note, her intuitive, expressive movement blending seamlessly with the music.
Together, Amaker and March explored what it means to cross thresholds — moments of anticipation, rupture, and transformation. This series invited the audience to feel these shifts in real time, creating a space where sound, movement, and poetic presence converge.
The Gibbes hosted its first ever one-day symposium dedicated to brand development and career growth for visual artists. Sponsored by Bank of America, the day included free professional headshots, talks about gallery representation with Beverly McIver and Kim Boganey, grants and writing about your art with Raheleh Filsoofi, photographing artwork with Rick Rhodes, and how to create a brand with Isaiah Scott.

The Gibbes’ summer internship program, which focuses on building leadership skills in diverse audiences, welcomed its second scholar: Theo Lockrow. Theo, a rising junior at Wesleyan University, pursuing a degree in Art History and East Asian Studies with a focus on twentieth century Japanese art, completed the Vibrant Leader internship. Following the internship, Theo began a study abroad program at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
The storytelling capabilities of art have always fascinated Theo, and there is no other place like an art museum that is able to highlight all of the stories and memories of art of the past and present. Theo’s capstone project involved curating an exhibit as part of our Out of the Vault series focusing on 20th century Japanese prints, many of which were part of a recent gift to the Museum and had not been studied previously.
The Gibbes teamed up with Kids on Point, a local nonprofit that serves students from Title I and underserved schools with year-round programming, for our eighth annual summer camp collaboration. Inspired by the theme “Please Don’t Stop the Music” and the exhibition Picturing Freedom: Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid, the Gibbes invited Marcus Amaker to work with students, experimenting with creating poetry and sounds.
The group album i wonder if space ever stops expanding is the result of a weeklong writing and recording workshop with middle school students. Produced by Amaker, the album features poems and reflections written and voiced by students — layered with original beats and sound design. Centered around themes of identity, memory, and liberation (stemming from a powerful visit to the exhibition), each track is a window into how young voices imagine safety, dream of the future, and speak truths through rhythm and word.
SCAN QR CODE TO LISTEN TO THE ALBUM.
On October 30, 2024, the Gibbes hosted its first family-oriented Halloween event: Gibbes and Ghouls. Almost 300 visitors dressed as artists, monsters, and everything in between, enjoyed candy-free trick-or-treating in the galleries, story time with the Charleston County Public Library, and craft making, while enjoying totally not scary encounters with Visiting Artists. This program was made possible by the generous support of Art Bridges Foundation Access for All.

The Gibbes Museum packed the house at the Charleston Music Hall to welcome director and art collector Spike Lee to Charleston. Interviewed by Pauline Forlenza, Director and CEO of the American Federation of the Arts, Lee spoke about his personal art collection, his history with collecting, and how the arts influence his iconic films.
Through the generous support of our education sponsors we were able to offer 130 free tickets to student and community groups, creating access to communities who might otherwise not have been able to attend this monumental lecture.
Thank you to Metanoia, 1967 Legacy Scholars, The Citadel, SC State, Lowcountry Youth Services, Claflin University, Pepperhill, CofC Honors College, CofC Film Department, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Avery Research Center, We Are Family, and Choices Women’s Center.
Leading up to the lecture, the Gibbes hosted a series of three screenings in collaboration with the Terrace Theater: Do the Right Thing, Malcom X, and BlackKklansman.

Big Chief Demond Melancon is a contemporary artist based in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. As a Big Chief, he is the leader of the Young Seminole Hunters, a tribe of the Black Masking Culture of New Orleans, a hidden culture that dates back to the 18th century. Melancon creates elaborate beaded suits and portraits that depict historical and cultural narratives of African and Indigenous people. He works solely with a needle and thread to sew glass beads onto canvas, using beading techniques he has refined over the past thirty years as a Black Masker. His suits are sculptural forms that are worn only by him a few times a year, where he engages in ceremonial wars of beauty with other tribes. Melancon is credited with pioneering the intersection of the Black Masking Culture of New Orleans with the larger contemporary arts sector. His beaded portraits are also exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Melancon is a 2023 Joan Mitchell Fellow and has received international recognition for his work.

CELEBRATING

Society 1858 is dedicated to a new understanding of contemporary art in the South, both through ongoing art education and the 1858 Prize, which recognizes and celebrates Southern artists and their contributions to the greater American art landscape. Through thoughtful ongoing programming, the 2024 exhibition Celebrating the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, and central efforts around awarding and recognizing an annual prize winner, we bring exposure to contemporary Southern art to a burgeoning audience of Charleston art patrons.

Founded in 1950, the Gibbes Women’s Council is a vital support system of the Gibbes Museum. This auxiliary group of 200 dedicated members contributes time, talent, and financial support while acting as ambassadors between the Museum and the community. Their signature event, the annual Art of Design Luncheon and Lecture — which kicks off Art Charleston — features internationally recognized voices in art and design and has raised over a million dollars for the Museum, directly supporting educational programming and transformative exhibitions. This year’s event was its most successful yet, grossing over $150,000 for the Gibbes. In May 2025, the GWC celebrated its 75th anniversary with a reception that welcomed more than a hundred guests.

Inspired by the Museum’s special exhibition Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Objects and the Gibbes Collection, Art Charleston 2025 highlighted the intersection of fashion and fine art.
We welcomed Nell Diamond, Founder and CEO of Hill House Home, as the Art of Design speaker; introduced the Sew Surreal Fashion Show, where local designers debuted capsule collections inspired by the Gibbes’ permanent collection; spotlighted mother-daughter fashion and design entrepreneurs in the lively Generations of Creativity panel discussion; and explored how fashion, identity, and community converge in digital culture during our Threads of Change panel discussion with renowned YouTubers. The week also featured the beloved Gibbes on the Street culinary celebration, transforming Meeting Street into an open-air dining experience with Charleston’s leading chefs and restaurants.
Art Charleston 2025 continued to uplift local talent, fuel cultural tourism, and strengthen Charleston’s creative economy, raising nearly $300,000 to support the Museum.

THIS YEAR, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY OF CHARLESTON, WE DIVERTED 537.2 POUNDS OF STREET PARTY WASTE FROM THE LANDFILL WITH COMPOSTING AND RECYCLING.

Van Campbell was a long time Board member, donor, and steadfast supporter of the Gibbes. Retired from Corning, Inc., Van and his wife, Susan, first became involved with the Gibbes in the early 2000s. Van joined the Board of Directors in 2002 and served as Treasurer for many years. In 2009, the Gibbes honored Van and Susan by awarding them the first ever James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award in recognition of their outstanding and unprecedented philanthropic gifts. As lead donors of the 2016 Campaign for Excellence, the Campbells named the Rotunda, and it serves as a beautiful and timeless testament to their unwavering dedication to the Gibbes and our mission. Van and Susan hosted events, attended exhibit openings, solicited campaign funding, and always held the Gibbes close to their hearts. It was truly a privilege to know and work with Van, and he is missed beyond measure.

Roy Green was an active and devoted Board member for over ten years. An ardent music lover and former owner of a downtown Detroit jazz club, Roy was instrumental in the creation, planning, and execution of the inaugural Gibbes on the Street fundraising event. Roy was a former Social Services Supervisor and dedicated his life to public service and community enrichment. He and his wife, Theresa, were fixtures at Museum events, often bringing friends and encouraging them to join as members. We will never forget Roy’s positive attitude, friendly nature, enthusiasm, and outspoken devotion to the Gibbes. Roy was that rare combination of genuine actions and sincere words, and he is deeply missed by all who knew him.

Lorraine Perry was a long-time volunteer and Women’s Council member. A true Renaissance woman, Lorraine was a business owner, arts lover, event host, and sailor. She was often found in the galleries giving tours and answering questions about her favorite works of art. Biking to the Gibbes from her downtown home, she encouraged everyone she encountered to visit the Museum and could always be counted on to bring a friend to an event or program. Lorraine is greatly missed by the Gibbes staff and volunteers.

The Gibbes Museum Fellows’ membership program brings together individuals and local businesses who share an appreciation for the arts and a personal commitment to enhancing Charleston’s premier art museum. These art enthusiasts experience museum patronage, exclusive special events, Fellows-only travel, and an annual year-end celebration. Our Fellows in turn help us to provide transformational exhibitions and programs.
In June 2025, a group of Gibbes Fellows traveled to Berlin for an immersive week of art, history, and culture. Over the course of the trip, participants experienced some of the city’s most extraordinary museums, galleries, private collections, and architectural landmarks, spanning ancient to contemporary periods. The itinerary also included a full-day excursion to Potsdam to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site and former summer retreat of Frederick the Great. Their visit coincided with the Berlin Music Festival, adding another layer of cultural richness to the week. Fellows stayed at the five-star Hotel de Rome in the heart of Berlin and enjoyed outstanding culinary experiences that showcased the city’s vibrant dining scene, deepening connections among supporters while underscoring the Gibbes’ commitment to art and cultural exchange.

Museums are places where education thrives, and the Gibbes is no exception. Since its founding, the Museum has worked to retain creative capital in Charleston. Yet limited gallery space has made it challenging to accommodate new artistic media, serve a rapidly growing community, and meet the expectations of record numbers of cultural tourists. A $1.2M expansion in 1978 and a $17M renovation in 2016 maximized our current footprint — including the Lenhardt Garden — making the adjacent E.B. White building at 141 Meeting Street the essential next step.
To pursue this opportunity, the Gibbes relied on three trusted local professionals: architect Joe Schmidt, City Councilmember and Gibbes’ Board member Mike Seekings, and attorney Trenholm Walker Working alongside Museum staff and the Board of Directors, each contributed their expertise to bring this project to life.
Having played a central role in the 2016 renovation, Schmidt was the clear choice to lead architectural planning. He developed thoughtful renderings illustrating how the two buildings will connect, along with plans for expanded galleries and an education center.
As a City of Charleston-appointed Board member, Seekings has long been a champion of the Museum. His leadership and advocacy at the city level were essential throughout negotiations for the purchase.
Walker guided the Museum through the legal complexities of the acquisition with diligence and genuine care, ensuring a smooth path through a detailed and nuanced agreement.
Thanks to their dedication, 141 Meeting Street is now secured as a 6,000-square-foot expansion for the Gibbes — an exciting enhancement to Charleston’s visual arts landscape.
With fifty-eight events hosted this year, private events remained a vital part of the Museum’s community presence and financial sustainability. Forty-three couples celebrated their weddings, and we continued to see growth in corporate and organizational rentals. Highlights included hosting the Travel + Leisure Food & Wine Classic VIP Party, marking its first time ever in Charleston, as well as receptions and gatherings for organizations such as Bank of America, Compass, CorVel, Charleston School of Law, Edward Jones, Hispanic Alliance, RiskSpan, and Sherman Capital Markets.

At the end of 2024, the Gibbes Museum Store underwent a major renovation, reducing its overall footprint to make room for expanded storage and new office space. Despite the smaller layout, the store has grown in exciting ways — featuring more versatile shelving, a larger, ADA-compliant desk designed for new technologies, and a refreshed overall design. With an almost entirely reimagined space and a new team, fresh ideas are taking shape.
Looking ahead, the store plans to broaden its merchandise offerings with a new Collection Section and Kids’ Corner, both enhanced with vibrant vinyl murals and innovative product displays. We remain committed to keeping artists at the heart of our mission by continuing to highlight and support local creators, including our Visiting Artists.
In the coming year, the store is thrilled to lead two major events — the Holiday Market in December and the Artisan Fair in April. Sales continue to rise as the store becomes more established in its renewed form. We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of our patrons, members, and staff, as well as the dedication of the Women’s Council, our loyal customers, and our wonderful vendors.
