Polished man fundraiser - 1st November at the RSL Our tiny community is fundraising for YGAP’s Polished Man 2018 campaign because we believe we can create a world in which no child suffers from violence. We’re doing this for the 1 child who dies every 5 minutes as a result of violence. We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do. Come join us and make a donation to ‘buy a nail’ on one of our participants. Your donation supports an end to violence against children, and allows you to choose the nail art or colour that your nominated participant will wear on that nail.

DONATE IN PERSON ON THE NIGHT, AND WATCH YOUR BOSS, PARTNER OR BESTIE ROCK THEIR CHARITABLE MANICURE, OR DONATE ONLINE AT OUR TEAM FUNDRAISING PAGE: MY.POLISHEDMAN.COM/WOOMERACOMMUNITY

WHY IS IT FOCUSED ON MEN? While a large percentage of violence against children is perpetrated by men, Polished Man wants to empower, not point a finger. It encourages men to take action, unite and lead by example, channelling their collective strength to protect society’s most vulnerable.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY RAISED GO? The money raised goes to support trauma recovery and prevention for children who have been abused or who are at risk of violence here in Australia (and around the world).

Please send your work

International Artist’s Day is celebrated annually on October 25. Artists work hard to create their work. They add beauty to the world around us. Artists work with many different mediums. They include painting, sculpting, drawing, photography, music, glass, literary, acting, dance, digital, and more.

This year we want to celebrate our local artist in Woomera and surrounds. We ask artist around the area to share their work by sending a picture along with a short description to gibber.gabber@bigpond.com. The deadline for submissions is the Wednesday 24th October, midday.

Valentine’s Day cards for the troops Combat Cards is a project run by volunteers in each state. These lovely people collect donations of handmade cards and send them out to Australian armed forces serving overseas, where they generally don’t have access to cards for their family and friends back home. We’ve missed the Christmas card cut-off but they’ve asked if we could make Valentine’s Day cards instead. I have some paper and materials that I’m happy to donate, but if you have things that you want to bring that would be appreciated as well. Please bring your trimmers and adhesives with you, if you have them. You can use any style of embellishments and techniques with one exception... NO GLITTER of any kind. Little flakes of glitter easily get left on clothes and skin and apparently they show up very brightly with night-vision goggles. We don’t want our cards to make targets of our people overseas!

Howzat!! RETURN OF CRICKET

A HIT IN PERFECT CONDITIONS On a warm spring evening Olympic Dam ventured down the highway to face the Woomera Redbacks in the opening round of the Roxby Traders Twenty 20 - Shield. Woomera won the toss and elected to bat first; finding the going tough with thanks to some great opening bowling from the Holbrook brothers. After battling away, Woomera found themselves all out for 62. Defending a small total was always going to be a tricky task, but after Woomera’s Peter Caufield collected an early wicket, Olympic Dam’s Seb Holbrook put on a batting masterclass to bring up his half-century in what would be the final over. Olympic Dam ran away with it to win by 9 wickets. We will back at it again in Woomera on Saturday 13th at 7 pm to face Hornridge.

By the Pasty Putter Fine warm spring conditions greeted the players for last Sundays golfing which was the last 18 hole competition to be played this season and the event was a Stableford incorporating the final of the club championship. Winner of the day went to Wally Broome with 40 points, runners up accolades to Greg Budden with 28 points and Justin Allchurch took out the NAGA award with 27 points. Wally also took out the club championship defeating Greg Budden 5 up with 4 to play. Long drives went to Justin on hole 3, Greg on hole 16 and there were no nearest to pins. The birdies nest will also prosper as hole 11 was drawn from the barrel and no birds where recorded for this hole. Well that’s all the Jibber for this week, so until next week I’ll see you in the bunker or the 19th and remember winners are grinners!
