Celebrate World Smile Day - October 5, 2018 “DO AN ACT OF KINDNESS. HELP ONE PERSON SMILE”! Sometimes all it takes to make the day better is a smile, whether it’s one someone gives to you, or one you share with another. Little acts of kindness can bring a shining smile to someone who has otherwise had a terrible day, and it can change everything that follows. Whether it’s just a simple compliment, a cheery hello, or a gift of something small to help brighten their day, World Smile Day encourages you to take action to bring a few more smiles into the world. History of World Smile Day It was a simple thing, a circle with a few dots and an upturned curve, but put together Harvey Ball created one of the most iconic symbols the world had ever seen, and it would quickly come to infect everything from graffiti to modern day emoji’s. We are, of course, talking about the smiley face, arguably the first emoji to enter the world. Harvey would later express concern that the sheer commercialization of his little symbol would strip it of its original intent and meaning. It was out of this concern that he created World Smile Day, a day devoted to the spreading of simple joy and love to everyone, regardless of race, gender, or geographic location. Harvey sadly passed from this world in 2001, but the foundation he helped create, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation, has carried forth his message of simple peace and love as the sponsor of World Smile Day every year. Whether you’re simply expressing a bit of silliness or doing a small act of kindness to

help someone smile, World Smile Day is your opportunity to help brighten the world and make the world a better place through the simple power of the smile.

How to celebrate World Smile Day It all starts with keeping your eyes and heart open to the people around you, and recognizing when someone nearby could use a momentary lift to their day. Everyone can make a difference on World Smile Day, just by being caring and compassionate and helping those around them have the best day they can have. Those who are truly ambitious can check out the World Smile Day website and look into becoming a World Smile Day ambassador. World Smile Day Ambassador’s go the extra mile in setting up events at local businesses, schools, parks, even online to help spread the simple joy of a smile to the world.

Dogtober 2018 Dogtober is the perfect opportunity for you, your friends, family and colleagues to get involved and raise some dollars for Assistance Dogs Australia and our adorable doggies! Throughout the month of October, we champion community fundraising and encourage you to organise and run events or houndraisers that will bring in some cash to help our cause. The choice of houndraiser is yours, whether it’s a classic sausage sizzle, a bring your dog to work day, or throwing a crazy howl-o-ween party for all your friends and their pups, we’re here to help support you and make your event a success!

Paw-by-Paw Guide 1 Make A Plan No one said it was going to be easy, but the old adage ‘failing to prepare is preparing to fail’ couldn’t be more true when it comes to fundraisers. Ensuring sure you have a solid plan in place from the get-go is imperative. Don’t underestimate the task at hand, get something in writing that highlights what, where & when, along with a list of things you need to do to make it happen.

2 Streamline Your Fundraising The easiest way to collect your hard earned fundraising dollars is through an Everyday Hero page. This not only saves you chasing your friends for cash, but allows you to share your page with more people through your social networks. Head to nfp.everydayhero.com/au/assistancedogs-australia to set up your page and you’re on the road. From here you can set a fundraising target, keep a track on your progress, and who has helped you along the way.

4

Gibber Gabber: A Woomera Board publication

We’ve put together a step by step guide to help you along the way, as well as some top houndraising tips to make sure your event is fun and successful!

3 Advertise It has never been easier to tell everyone you know that you’re holding or participating in an event, how amazing it is going to be and how much they’re going to regret it if they miss out. Spread your message far and wide making it clear what is happening and why your event is going to be the highlight of the year. You can set up a Facebook event, pop an invite in your friends calendars or get hands on by making posters & flyers to go in your workplace, school or club!

4 RSVP Yea, you’ve already blasted your networks to tell them about the party of the year, but a personalised invite can go a long way. Take some time to get on the phone, text and email to chaperone your friends and get them RSVP and join you and your fun filled event, for a great cause.

5 Enjoy If you’ve done all of the previous steps properly, you’re in a pretty good place. Execute your list of tasks, enjoy the event and watch the money roll in!

Houndraising Tips We’ve put together a list of top houndraising tips to help make your event a success. Remember, the most effective fundraising events aren’t always the most flashy and elaborate. Often, making things fun, simple and straightforward for you and your invitees can be the way to go.

Make it Fun Making your houndraiser fun will not only increase the chances of people turning up and handing over their hard earned dollars, but will make your life much easier when you’re trying to plan and execute the event.

Choose an activity that you know your friends enjoy. Try and choose something with varying levels of participation. It doesn’t need to be a bold new idea, sometimes the classics are the best. Choose something that will get your friends excited and is inclusive for everyone.

Keep It Simple Your event doesn’t need to be a large scale production with a huge budget and a whole bunch of stress. The most effective fundraisers are often a success because they are simple and straightforward.

Communicate Clearly communicating what is going on to your attendees is going to massively increase the chances of them turning up. Let them know what you’ve planned and what is required of them on the day.

Streamline & Maximise Donations Make your life that little bit easier by setting up your Everyday Hero page from the get-go and streamlining your donations. This way, you reduce the amount of hard cash that has to exchange hands, save yourself a bunch of admin and increase the likelihood of getting donations from friends, family and colleagues that might not have usually bothered.

Share It has never been easier to share with your networks and drum up both attendees and donors for your houndraiser.

Leverage an existing event such as a fun run or swim. Make it easy for everyone to participate.. Ensure its straightforward for people to donate.

Make it clear what, where & when. Produce an itinerary for your event. Send regular updates and reminders to your guests.

Include the link to your EDH page in social media posts, on your adverts and invites. Customise your page to give it that extra bit of umph. Track and thank your largest donors and share this with your networks.

Set up a Facebook event, invite your friends, share it on your page. Send out an email to all of your colleagues and include a calendar invite. Print out the Dogtober poster and put it up in your office or staff room.

Houndspiration Still stuck for ideas around what to do? Fear not, we’ve put together a short list to help you out;

Register for a run, cycle or swim event and ask for sponsors. Host a howl-o-ween party / disco for your friends and their pooches. Sweet talk your boss into having a bring your dog to work day for all your colleagues. Everyone loves a sausage sizzle and a bake sale, host one at your local club or dog-park. Organise a dog-leg golf day at your local club.

WOOMERA PROHIBITED AREA

DOWN THE FAIRWAY

The Department of Defence is scheduled to conduct testing in the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) between 1 October and 21 October 2018. Access to travel on the Stuart Highway will be suspended between the Ingomar rest stop (S29.697100, E135.131879) and the WPA boundary North of Glendambo (S30.600743, E135.384943) for up to 12 hours per suspension. It is anticipated there will be nine (9) suspensions during this period, however, due to the nature of the activity, additional contingency closures may be required. On road closure days, uniformed Defence personnel will staff the road closure points to prevent access. In addition, roadside electronic signage will be in place just outside Glendambo and Coober Pedy to advise the public if the road will be closed on the day. Travellers are advised to ensure they have adequate provisions to accommodate any closure periods. The WPA is declared as a Prohibited Area under Defence Force Regulations 1952 and the Woomera Prohibited Area Rule 2014. Permits are required for access to the WPA other than for those areas covered by a standing permission or for those persons/entities classified as existing users under the Defence Force Regulations 1952. Members of the public travelling through the WPA via the Stuart Highway are reminded that this road forms part of the prohibited area and that they are not to deviate from it. Other roads and tracks entering the WPA are signposted to the effect that the WPA is a prohibited area and no person shall enter or remain therein without proper authorisation. Presence within the WPA without permission is an offence under Section 72TC of the Defence Act 1903. The penalty for being in the WPA without permission is imprisonment for two years or 120 penalty points or both. Members of the public traversing the WPA via the Anne Beadell Highway are reminded that, in addition to a permit being required from Range Operations Woomera on (08) 8674 3370, permits are also required from: Maralinga Tjarutja Lands & Mamungari Conservation Park PO Box 435, CEDUNA SA 5690 Phone: (08) 8625 2946 Tallaringa Conservation Park Department for Environment Heritage and Aboriginal Affairs 9 Mackay Street, PORT AUGUSTA SA 5700 Phone: (08) 8648 5300 There may be some items such as cylindrical rocket motor cases and nozzles, flat rectangular pieces of metal, spherical tanks, military projectiles or unexploded ammunition encountered in the WPA. If any unusual item is encountered, it must not be handled as it may be extremely dangerous and could cause serious injury or death. Note the description and location of the item and report it to the Pastoral Station Manager or the Range Activities Coordinator Woomera on (08) 8674 3370.
