WINDOWS TO HOPE CONFERENCE EQUIPS FAITH LEADERS WITH MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION, RESOURCES A record-breaking 170 faith leaders, educators, mental health professionals and others who live or work with teens attended the 4th Annual Windows to Hope conference on March 1 at Richardson Civic Center. Presented by I AM HERE Coalition, the conference is designed to equip adults who work with youth in a faith setting to more effectively meet youth mental health needs. Featured keynote speaker Rev. Susan Hawkins Sager of Interfaith Pastoral Care presented CPR in a Mental Health Crisis and facilitated an in-depth, interactive discussion on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. “This year’s conference was one of the best yet,” Sierra Sanchez, I AM HERE Coalition co-chair and senior program coordinator for Grant Halliburton

WINDOWS TO HOPE Becca Bishop, MSSW, LPC, a counselor at Girls to Women Health and Wellness, reviews presentation handouts during the plenary session at Windows to Hope.

Foundation, said.

“Attendees found a world of helpful information at the conference, including resources and tools to recognize and respond to teens who are struggling with negative behaviors and other mental health conditions.”

Carrie Davidson, Psy.D.; and Nathaniel Strenger, Psy.D. from Pastoral Counseling Center.

Windows to Hope also offered workshops focused on LGBTQ youth mental health trends, risky online behavior, youth relationship violence, grief and loss, the damaging effects of pornography, and eating disorders. The plenary session featured Brad Schwall, D.Min.;

Foundation supporters Kate Anderson and Heidi Perry. Emmy Award winner and FOX 4 News Consumer Reporter Steve Noviello served as master of ceremonies.

Faces of Hope honorees were Suzie and Mike Ayoob, Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Herb Cotner, Julie Hersh, Terry Bentley Hill, Patrick LeBlanc, Sylvia Orozco-Joseph, Sierra Sanchez and Priya Singhvi, each of whom works to promote better mental health every day in various ways. The Faces of Hope project was chaired by long-time supporter Barb Farmer.

For the first time, the Foundation honored nine local individuals as Faces of Hope for their contributions in the North Texas community. Through a partnership with Gittings, each honoree had a portrait on display at the luncheon, and each received an award in recognition of their positive and courageous mental health contributions.

The Q&A: 13 Reasons Why

Special thanks to generous conference underwriters Karen and Randall McCleskey, as well as the conference sponsors: Timberline Knolls, Healing Springs Ranch, Healthcare Hospital, Grace Counseling, Vann Counseling, LeTourneau University, Millwood Hospitals and the Excel Centers, Clearfork Academy, Mobile Counseling, Eating Recovery Center and Waterford Academy.

Foundation President Vanita Halliburton interviewed Melton, who spoke candidly about the hiding places she found in bulimia, addiction and depression to keep from feeling pain, and her discovery that when people face and persevere through the pain, it can transform into something beneficial.

“Don’t avoid the pain. You need it. It’s meant for you,” Melton said. “Be still with it, let it come, let it go, let it leave you with the fuel you’ll burn to get your work done on this earth.”
