WINDOWS TO HOPE CONFERENCE EQUIPS FAITH LEADERS WITH MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION, RESOURCES A record-breaking 170 faith leaders, educators, mental health professionals and others who live or work with teens attended the 4th Annual Windows to Hope conference on March 1 at Richardson Civic Center.

Presented by I AM HERE Coalition, the conference is designed to equip adults who work with youth in a faith setting to more effectively meet youth mental health needs. Featured keynote speaker Rev. Susan Hawkins Sager of Interfaith Pastoral Care presented CPR in a Mental Health Crisis and facilitated an in-depth, interactive discussion on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.

Faces of Hope honorees were Suzie and Mike Ayoob, Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Herb Cotner, Julie Hersh, Terry Bentley Hill, Patrick LeBlanc, Sylvia Orozco-Joseph, Sierra Sanchez and Priya Singhvi, each of whom works to promote better mental health every day in various ways.

The Faces of Hope project was chaired by long-time supporter Barb Farmer.

For the first time, the Foundation honored nine local individuals as Faces of Hope for their contributions in the North Texas community. Through a partnership with Gittings, each honoree had a portrait on display at the luncheon, and each received an award in recognition of their positive and courageous mental health contributions.

The Q&A: 13 Reasons Why

Foundation President Vanita Halliburton interviewed Melton, who spoke candidly about the hiding places she found in bulimia, addiction and depression to keep from feeling pain, and her discovery that when people face and persevere through the pain, it can transform into something beneficial.

“Don’t avoid the pain. You need it. It’s meant for you,” Melton said. “Be still with it, let it come, let it go, let it leave you with the fuel you’ll burn to get your work done on this earth.”

Recently we learned of a 15-year-old girl who, though no one knew it, was feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. One Wednesday evening, she made the decision to end it all. She made a plan about how and when she might do it. On Thursday morning, she attended a school presentation by Grant Halliburton Foundation about suicide prevention and recognizing the symptoms and signs of depression. That afternoon she asked her mother to schedule an appointment with the doctor as soon as possible, though still not disclosing her depression nor her suicide plan. 13 Reasons Why, a Netflix series about a teenage girl who takes her own life, has received mixed reviews from the public and particularly the mental health community.

The main concern is that the show arguably sensationalizes teen suicide and makes the topic intriguing and attractive to adolescents. Should teens be watching 13 Reasons Why? Kelly Jameson, Ph.D., a North Dallas therapist in private practice, shares her perspective.

Many of my clients who suffer from depression have said, “This is not a show about depression, it’s about bullying and sexual assault and people being jerks.” So, I believe the topic of depression got lost somewhere in the plot and that’s unfortunate.

Many believe the series sensationalizes suicide without suggesting there were any other solutions to Hannah’s struggles. How do you think teens will see it?

I believe teens are smarter than we give them credit for, most of the time. We have to remember this is a show about their thought processes, and not adults’. They are much more analytical and critical of the show and are not fixating on the suicide, unlike adults.

The series graphically depicts a suicide death, bullying, rape, drunk driving and slut shaming, as well as teenagers witnessing these events and not taking action. What messages could teens take away from these portrayals?

I hope the show makes teens think twice about their own choices when caught in the crosshairs of these situations. I tell my clients daily, “Use your words.” They laugh because it’s something we say to young children who are throwing a fit, but it’s also applicable to

Recently we learned of a 15-year-old girl who, though no one knew it, was feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. One Wednesday evening, she made the decision to end it all. She made a plan about how and when she might do it. On Thursday morning, she attended a school presentation by Grant Halliburton Foundation about suicide prevention and recognizing the symptoms and signs of depression. That afternoon she asked her mother to schedule an appointment with the doctor as soon as possible, though still not disclosing her depression nor her suicide plan. Some say the show fails to convey the role mental illness plays in suicide and suggests

13 Reasons Why, a Netflix series about a teenage girl who takes her own life, has received mixed reviews from the public and particularly the mental health community.

The main concern is that the show arguably sensationalizes teen suicide and makes the topic intriguing and attractive to adolescents. Should teens be watching 13 Reasons Why? Kelly Jameson, Ph.D., a North Dallas therapist in private practice, shares her perspective.

Many of my clients who suffer from depression have said, “This is not a show about depression, it’s about bullying and sexual assault and people being jerks.” So, I believe the topic of depression got lost somewhere in the plot and that’s unfortunate.

Many believe the series sensationalizes suicide without suggesting there were any other solutions to Hannah’s struggles. How do you think teens will see it?

I believe teens are smarter than we give them credit for, most of the time. We have to remember this is a show about their thought processes, and not adults’. They are much more analytical and critical of the show and are not fixating on the suicide, unlike adults.

The series graphically depicts a suicide death, bullying, rape, drunk driving and slut shaming, as well as teenagers witnessing these events and not taking action. What messages could teens take away from these portrayals?

I hope the show makes teens think twice about their own choices when caught in the crosshairs of these situations. I tell my clients daily, “Use your words.” They laugh because it’s something we say to young children who are throwing a fit, but it’s also applicable to

WINDOWS TO HOPE CONFERENCE EQUIPS FAITH LEADERS WITH MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION, RESOURCES A record-breaking 170 faith leaders, educators, mental health professionals and others who live or work with teens attended the 4th Annual Windows to Hope conference on March 1 at Richardson Civic Center.

Presented by I AM HERE Coalition, the conference is designed to equip adults who work with youth in a faith setting to more effectively meet youth mental health needs. Featured keynote speaker Rev. Susan Hawkins Sager of Interfaith Pastoral Care presented CPR in a Mental Health Crisis and facilitated an in-depth, interactive discussion on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.

Faces of Hope honorees were Suzie and Mike Ayoob, Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Herb Cotner, Julie Hersh, Terry Bentley Hill, Patrick LeBlanc, Sylvia Orozco-Joseph, Sierra Sanchez and Priya Singhvi, each of whom works to promote better mental health every day in various ways.

The Faces of Hope project was chaired by long-time supporter Barb Farmer.

For the first time, the Foundation honored nine local individuals as Faces of Hope for their contributions in the North Texas community. Through a partnership with Gittings, each honoree had a portrait on display at the luncheon, and each received an award in recognition of their positive and courageous mental health contributions.

Foundation President Vanita Halliburton interviewed Melton, who spoke candidly about the hiding places she found in bulimia, addiction and depression to keep from feeling pain, and her discovery that when people face and persevere through the pain, it can transform into something beneficial.

“Don’t avoid the pain. You need it. It’s meant for you,” Melton said. “Be still with it, let it come, let it go, let it leave you with the fuel you’ll burn to get your work done on this earth.”
