Grant Halliburton Foundation Connects North Texans to Mental Health Resources During COVID-19

I

n March, North Texans began facing a new reality: COVID-19. While the coronavirus began making headlines around the world, the Grant Halliburton Foundation staff began working from home and continuing to provide resources to help North Texans navigate this crisis.

As stress builds and anxiety grows around the unusual circumstances with COVID-19, North Texans in every age group, neighborhood, and economic situation are seeing an increased need for mental health guidance.

“Fear, isolation, loss, and financial worries are rising,” Vanita Halliburton, executive chairman and co-founder of Grant Halliburton Foundation, said. “But in the midst of increasing levels of anxiety, depression, and suicide, the Foundation is working harder than ever to give North Texans help and hope.”

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Foundation has put in place a series of program changes to adapt and best serve the community during this time.

Mental Health Education The Foundation is offering all of its current youth and adult presentations in a virtual format live on Zoom for groups of 10 or more. Schools and community partners can also choose password-protected access to pre-recorded presentations.

The outreach and education team also created a library of mini-lesson videos for

teens and adults, providing information to help people understand and care for their own mental health during the pandemic.

The online videos are free for viewing at GrantHalliburton.org/pandemicresources.

“During this time, we know that coping with stress, building resilience, learning about resources, and knowing how to recognize and respond to a mental health crisis is crucial knowledge to have,” Halliburton said.

Mental Health Resources To continue offering North Texans resources, the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line team transitioned to working from home, where they can receive calls using a secure call-forwarding app.

Due to increased stress and anxiety around COVID-19, the Navigation Line has seen calls nearly double from an average of 3040 calls per month to 50-60 calls per month.

In April, the Foundation partnered with the Dallas County Medical Society to connect frontline healthcare professionals with critical mental health resources through the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line. In addition, the team created free mental health posters for local hospital staff.

“As the pandemic continues, mental health for all is critical, especially for frontline workers and healthcare professionals,” Kevin Hall, president of Grant Halliburton Foundation, said. “So far, more than 300 telehealth providers have let us know they’re ready to help.”

Peer Support Groups While there will be numerous challenges in the months ahead, there is also an opportunity to give attention to well-being at home. Since April, Coffee Days meetings have met online in a virtual format to continue offering information, encouragement, and guidance to moms and families.

In early June, Dad2Dad held its first virtual meeting, with featured speaker Rev. George Mason.

“The pandemic presents unforeseen challenges, but we will continue providing mental health resources for children, teens, and young adults in North Texas,” Hall said.

“We are all in this together. And we will get through it together.”

KEVIN HALL In Search of Heroes Today is May 6, the deadline I was given to write this column for our summer newsletter. Knowing it will be several weeks before it reaches your mailbox, I am filled with uncertainty about an appropriate topic to write about. The state of the coronavirus (COVID-19) seems to change by the hour, and who knows what the coming months will bring.

One of my ideas was to write about emerging heroes across our community. Then I realized that heroes are all around us, doing their part, large and small, to help us through this hard time. Choosing which heroes to write about would be difficult.

This spring, our staff planned to embark on our annual two-day retreat in the Texas Hill Country, where we would work, play, bond, cook, hike, bike, and even bring our dogs. Every year we return home with a renewed sense of purpose for the work we do and the people we serve.

This year, we added a new twist. We asked each staff member to write a twopage bio, ultimately leading to how they came to find their place at Grant Halliburton Foundation. We called the project “This is Us.” The bios were all written weeks in advance, ready to share at the retreat.

I’ve learned that writing your own story is a powerful exercise in selfreflection. It is deep, personal, emotional, and sometimes painful. Getting started is the hardest part, but completing it brings a sense of inner accomplishment. And the best part is sharing your story with those close to you.

The retreat didn’t happen, but we sheltered at home and began sharing our stories anyway. Each day, one story was emailed to the team. Then, every Thursday during our virtual happy hour, we talked about those we had read and marveled at the honesty and openness of the authors. These stories bound us together more tightly than any campfire conversations could have.

As I wonder who the emerging heroes are, the answer is clear. Today, I celebrate the heroes of Grant Halliburton Foundation.

We are a team of 15 strong. We are men and women from all walks of life with a variety of talents, but with a common passion. When the world was flipped upside down, we quickly turned right-side up to address the growing mental health issues resulting from the current crisis.

We are working from home, harder than ever, to connect North Texans with the mental health resources they need. We are staying in contact with our school partners, managing the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line remotely, and conducting Coffee Days meetings through virtual technology.

We do this because this is our ultimate purpose. I have read our team’s stories and I know this: While we each took a different path to get here, ultimately, we all landed in the same spot. Our stories are filled with happiness, sadness, traumatic experiences, and many defining moments.

Above all else, our stories are filled with the positivity and inspiration that comes with embracing our shared purpose: to help young people who are struggling.

These are my heroes and they are more than worthy of the recognition.

I have no idea what the future holds. So much is simply out of our control.

However, the one thing we can control is the mission of Grant Halliburton Foundation, and that will remain the same: To strengthen the network of mental health resources for children, teens and young adults; promote better mental health; and help prevent suicide.

With warmth and occasional humor, Kennedy shared stories from his own journey with addiction and how that impacted his family and his time as a Congressman. During his 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Kennedy fought to end discrimination against mental illness and addiction, most notably as the lead sponsor of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. He continues this important work through his nonprofit organization, The Kennedy Forum.

Alec and you were life-long best friends. What can you tell us about your friendship?

On page 240 of my high school yearbook from my senior year, you can find me featured on the superlatives page. My best friend and I were featured as “best bromance.”

Over the years, we grew up together participating in similar activities and belonged to the same social groups. When our activities and interests started to drift slightly, our relationship stayed constant. There really was nothing that could tear our friendship apart.

Alec also grew to be a part of my family. He would often find himself included in our family game nights and some of our family road trips. Alec created a relationship with not only every member of my immediate family, but also my extended family and even some of my siblings’ friends as well.

Alec was a constant in my life. I knew regardless of the hardships and challenges that I would face, I would have him as my safety net.

What was Alec like?

Alec and I went through a few different friend groups throughout middle school and high school. Regardless of transitions and groups forming and crumbling, Alec was always by my side because I always knew that wherever he went, I wanted to be. This was because of our friendship, but also due to the similar values we both shared.

Alec cared more about genuine relationships than status or any other superficial things.

He lived to take care of others and would tirelessly put other people before himself without hesitation. Anyone who knew Alec could tell you he was the champion of doing this. He selflessly ensured that everybody else in the room was comfortable before even thinking about how he, himself, felt.

Alec was my rock and my go-to person. Alec was my confidante and someone I knew I could trust with my whole life. When I was feeling down, Alec knew exactly what to say or do to make me feel better. He would often act before I even knew how to verbalize how I was feeling. Alec and I never fought. Alec and I never parted. Alec was more than my best friend. He was a brother to me.

How did you learn about Alec’s suicide?

Three months ago, I received a text from my mom to call her when I had time. At the time I was at a dinner for a date party and decided to get up and give her a call. As soon as she started speaking, she burst into tears. My father then tried to give me the news, but he couldn’t get any words out either. friend, Alec Reid Becker, was no longer with us. She told me that my best friend took his own life. I sat down in the bathroom stall and didn’t start crying because what she had just said had not registered yet. After a few minutes the news sank in and I broke down. I started sobbing and could not stop.

My mom had called two of my best friends and told me that they were on their way to pick me up from the restaurant. When they got to the restaurant to pick me up, I immediately fell into their arms as they took me back to my dorm.

When I got to my dorm, I was greeted by eight of my closest friends and they stayed with me until my mom was able to fly in. Those few hours of being with my school friends were like living in limbo. Having just received such a traumatizing phone call combined with the comfort of being with my friends was bittersweet. Knowing I had people to care for me through such a difficult time kept me sane. So, a big thank you to everyone that night.

My mom soon flew in, we stayed one night in a hotel, and then flew back to Dallas early the next morning. While home I was able to be with my family, my home friends, and I was able to spend time with Alec’s family. While it was nice for me to see everybody that I cared about, it also hurt because everyone I cared about, Alec also cared for.

How has Alec’s death changed you?

No one tells you how hard it is to get back on your feet at 18 years old after losing your best friend. I find myself coming back to that thought very frequently. The thought of confusion because an itinerary for grief does not exist. I was constantly reminded this by my wonderful friends that there is no right way to grieve. They were right. There is no right way to grieve, but for me it really felt like nothing I did felt right, because to me, none of what was going on in my life was right.

Alec’s death by suicide happened just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic forced us all to be socially distant from friends and family. How has this affected your grieving process?

Unfortunately, I’ve had some of those face-to-face relationships with my friends stripped away by the shelter-in-place order. While I 100 percent support the order and understand the gravity of the current pandemic, I’ll be the first to say that it sucks.

Alec and I have been best friends as long as I can remember. We grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same Jewish day school. We then went to the same preschool and stayed at the same school until we both graduated last summer.

Eventually I began to partake in normal daily activities, and I started to get myself back together. Some would say I got over the grief process rather quickly with the help of my friends and family. While my friends and family have been a large part of my journey, I have not gotten over anything. Remembering and grieving Alec’s death will unfortunately be a constant in my life, so for that reason I choose to look at my situation as getting through my new life, not getting over anything.

This pandemic has given me the time and space to really grieve, a gift that has been a true blessing and a curse at times. However, I choose to think of it more as a blessing than a curse. This quarantine has given me some time to fully grieve. I have been alone with my thoughts for the past few weeks and it has given me a new perspective that I would love to share.

Being forcibly separated from many other people is something that seemingly could be harmful to a person who is grieving, like myself. At first, I had this perspective and I refused to face the new reality that I was put into. When I was reminded of Alec by a certain song, memory, game, or show, I attempted to push those feelings down in fear of drowning alone in my thoughts. With the help of my amazingly supportive family, I have changed that original perspective.

How are you doing today?

Now, I have decided to roll with the waves when they appear. This means I allow myself to feel all of the emotions that come with the grieving process. These feelings include sadness, guilt, and anger of course. However, they also include feelings of temporary joy. I know that sounds crazy, but there are sometimes when I feel joy.

This quarantine has allowed me to remember his life rather than his death. I remember the good times and laughs we shared, and at times I can be at peace and accept my new life. That doesn’t mean I am moving on or that some nights aren’t hard. It is simply a new perspective I am choosing to take.

My point here is that even in the darkest of times—and trust me this sure does feel like the darkest of times—it is still possible to see that light.

This quarantine can make people, including myself, want to self-isolate. It is important we all practice social distancing, but also that we do not use it as an excuse to socially isolate ourselves. Keep reaching out and keep fighting. We will get through this confusing and incredibly tough time together.

KEVIN HALL In Search of Heroes Today is May 6, the deadline I was given to write this column for our summer newsletter. Knowing it will be several weeks before it reaches your mailbox, I am filled with uncertainty about an appropriate topic to write about. The state of the coronavirus (COVID-19) seems to change by the hour, and who knows what the coming months will bring.

One of my ideas was to write about emerging heroes across our community. Then I realized that heroes are all around us, doing their part, large and small, to help us through this hard time. Choosing which heroes to write about would be difficult.

This spring, our staff planned to embark on our annual two-day retreat in the Texas Hill Country, where we would work, play, bond, cook, hike, bike, and even bring our dogs. Every year we return home with a renewed sense of purpose for the work we do and the people we serve.

This year, we added a new twist. We asked each staff member to write a twopage bio, ultimately leading to how they came to find their place at Grant Halliburton Foundation. We called the project “This is Us.” The bios were all written weeks in advance, ready to share at the retreat.

I’ve learned that writing your own story is a powerful exercise in selfreflection. It is deep, personal, emotional, and sometimes painful. Getting started is the hardest part, but completing it brings a sense of inner accomplishment. And the best part is sharing your story with those close to you.

The retreat didn’t happen, but we sheltered at home and began sharing our stories anyway. Each day, one story was emailed to the team. Then, every Thursday during our virtual happy hour, we talked about those we had read and marveled at the honesty and openness of the authors. These stories bound us together more tightly than any campfire conversations could have.

As I wonder who the emerging heroes are, the answer is clear. Today, I celebrate the heroes of Grant Halliburton Foundation.

We are a team of 15 strong. We are men and women from all walks of life with a variety of talents, but with a common passion. When the world was flipped upside down, we quickly turned right-side up to address the growing mental health issues resulting from the current crisis.

We are working from home, harder than ever, to connect North Texans with the mental health resources they need. We are staying in contact with our school partners, managing the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line remotely, and conducting Coffee Days meetings through virtual technology.

We do this because this is our ultimate purpose. I have read our team’s stories and I know this: While we each took a different path to get here, ultimately, we all landed in the same spot. Our stories are filled with happiness, sadness, traumatic experiences, and many defining moments.

Above all else, our stories are filled with the positivity and inspiration that comes with embracing our shared purpose: to help young people who are struggling.

These are my heroes and they are more than worthy of the recognition.

I have no idea what the future holds. So much is simply out of our control.

However, the one thing we can control is the mission of Grant Halliburton Foundation, and that will remain the same: To strengthen the network of mental health resources for children, teens and young adults; promote better mental health; and help prevent suicide.

With warmth and occasional humor, Kennedy shared stories from his own journey with addiction and how that impacted his family and his time as a Congressman. During his 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Kennedy fought to end discrimination against mental illness and addiction, most notably as the lead sponsor of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. He continues this important work through his nonprofit organization, The Kennedy Forum.

Alec and you were life-long best friends. What can you tell us about your friendship?

On page 240 of my high school yearbook from my senior year, you can find me featured on the superlatives page. My best friend and I were featured as “best bromance.”

Over the years, we grew up together participating in similar activities and belonged to the same social groups. When our activities and interests started to drift slightly, our relationship stayed constant. There really was nothing that could tear our friendship apart.

Grant Halliburton Foundation Connects North Texans to Mental Health Resources During COVID-19

n March, North Texans began facing a new reality: COVID-19. While the coronavirus began making headlines around the world, the Grant Halliburton Foundation staff began working from home and continuing to provide resources to help North Texans navigate this crisis.

As stress builds and anxiety grows around the unusual circumstances with COVID-19, North Texans in every age group, neighborhood, and economic situation are seeing an increased need for mental health guidance.

“Fear, isolation, loss, and financial worries are rising,” Vanita Halliburton, executive chairman and co-founder of Grant Halliburton Foundation, said. “But in the midst of increasing levels of anxiety, depression, and suicide, the Foundation is working harder than ever to give North Texans help and hope.”

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Foundation has put in place a series of program changes to adapt and best serve the community during this time.

Mental Health Education The Foundation is offering all of its current youth and adult presentations in a virtual format live on Zoom for groups of 10 or more. Schools and community partners can also choose password-protected access to pre-recorded presentations.

The outreach and education team also created a library of mini-lesson videos for

teens and adults, providing information to help people understand and care for their own mental health during the pandemic.

The online videos are free for viewing at GrantHalliburton.org/pandemicresources.

“During this time, we know that coping with stress, building resilience, learning about resources, and knowing how to recognize and respond to a mental health crisis is crucial knowledge to have,” Halliburton said.

Mental Health Resources To continue offering North Texans resources, the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line team transitioned to working from home, where they can receive calls using a secure call-forwarding app.

Due to increased stress and anxiety around COVID-19, the Navigation Line has seen calls nearly double from an average of 3040 calls per month to 50-60 calls per month.

In April, the Foundation partnered with the Dallas County Medical Society to connect frontline healthcare professionals with critical mental health resources through the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line. In addition, the team created free mental health posters for local hospital staff.

“As the pandemic continues, mental health for all is critical, especially for frontline workers and healthcare professionals,” Kevin Hall, president of Grant Halliburton Foundation, said. “So far, more than 300 telehealth providers have let us know they’re ready to help.”

Peer Support Groups While there will be numerous challenges in the months ahead, there is also an opportunity to give attention to well-being at home. Since April, Coffee Days meetings have met online in a virtual format to continue offering information, encouragement, and guidance to moms and families.

In early June, Dad2Dad held its first virtual meeting, with featured speaker Rev. George Mason.

“The pandemic presents unforeseen challenges, but we will continue providing mental health resources for children, teens, and young adults in North Texas,” Hall said.

“We are all in this together. And we will get through it together.”
