Presented by I AM H∙E∙R∙E Coalition, the half-day conference featured keynote speaker Jeff Temple, Ph.D., associate professor and psychologist at The University of Texas Medical Branch, who discussed how online connectedness has changed teens’ relationships and introduced new challenges.

In a recent article in The Atlantic, Jean Twenge argues smartphones and social media have disconnected teenagers from society. Are smartphones and social media ruining a generation?

While some good points are made in this article, the author recites a myth as old as humanity–that the upcoming generation is flawed. The nature of relationships has indeed changed to more technology-based interaction. But that doesn’t mean the generation is ruined. It means they have ready access to multiple people with similar interests. It means they are fluent in multiple methods of interactions. It means they have a social network that expands the globe. There are certainly risks and changes associated with this, but generations of kids have been tested with new inventions––from the car to rock-and-roll music to television––and always excel. The kids will be alright.

One danger that comes from teens communicating more indirectly online is that it has become easier to be cruel and to bully others. Is there a practical way to effectively address this?

You’re right, there are apps that can anonymously bully or harass others. The ultimate goal is to teach healthy relationship skills so that there is a reduced prevalence of these behaviors, regardless of the advent of new devices or apps. In the meantime, we should handle bullying the same way we handle real-life bullying and cruelty: with compassion for the victim and perpetrator, and address underlying mental health concerns. This is not to condone the behavior, but bullying and abuse do not occur in a vacuum. There is always something else going on whether it’s depression or a struggling home-life.

Is the culture surrounding this social media and text messaging generation promoting anxiety and lowering self-esteem in teens? What can be done about this?

From the moment a child is born and throughout their developmental years, we should be teaching healthy relationship skills. Schools should teach these skills just like they teach math, history and science. This will make the next generation less likely to bully, harass and abuse other people. It will equip folks to be active bystanders and help prevent abusive behavior among others. It will give them the ability and confidence to seek help for themselves and others. To accomplish this goal, we are implementing the Fourth R curriculum throughout the Houston area. This is a universal school-based program that expands existing health curricula and uses existing teachers to efficiently teach relationship skills.

Dr. Temple was recently the keynote speaker at I AM H•E•R•E Coalition’s 2017 Beyond Bullying conference.

His research focuses on interpersonal relationships with a particular focus on adolescent relationship abuse. His research has been funded through the National Institute of Justice, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. Dr. Temple has more than 125 scholarly publications in a variety of high-impact journals. He is also on the editorial boards of five other scientific journals.

While some good points are made in this article, the author recites a myth as old as humanity–that the upcoming generation is flawed. The nature of relationships has indeed changed to more technology-based interaction. But that doesn’t mean the generation is ruined. It means they have ready access to multiple people with similar interests. It means they are fluent in multiple methods of interactions. It means they have a social network that expands the globe. There are certainly risks and changes associated with this, but generations of kids have been tested with new inventions––from the car to rock-and-roll music to television––and always excel. The kids will be alright.

One danger that comes from teens communicating more indirectly online is that it has become easier to be cruel and to bully others. Is there a practical way to effectively address this?

You’re right, there are apps that can anonymously bully or harass others. The ultimate goal is to teach healthy relationship skills so that there is a reduced prevalence of these behaviors, regardless of the advent of new devices or apps. In the meantime, we should handle bullying the same way we handle real-life bullying and cruelty: with compassion for the victim and perpetrator, and address underlying mental health concerns. This is not to condone the behavior, but bullying and abuse do not occur in a vacuum. There is always something else going on whether it’s depression or a struggling home-life.

Is the culture surrounding this social media and text messaging generation promoting anxiety and lowering self-esteem in teens? What can be done about this?

From the moment a child is born and throughout their developmental years, we should be teaching healthy relationship skills. Schools should teach these skills just like they teach math, history and science. This will make the next generation less likely to bully, harass and abuse other people. It will equip folks to be active bystanders and help prevent abusive behavior among others. It will give them the ability and confidence to seek help for themselves and others. To accomplish this goal, we are implementing the Fourth R curriculum throughout the Houston area. This is a universal school-based program that expands existing health curricula and uses existing teachers to efficiently teach relationship skills.

Dr. Temple was recently the keynote speaker at I AM H•E•R•E Coalition’s 2017 Beyond Bullying conference.

His research focuses on interpersonal relationships with a particular focus on adolescent relationship abuse. His research has been funded through the National Institute of Justice, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. Dr. Temple has more than 125 scholarly publications in a variety of high-impact journals. He is also on the editorial boards of five other scientific journals.

Presented by I AM H∙E∙R∙E Coalition, the half-day conference featured keynote speaker Jeff Temple, Ph.D., associate professor and psychologist at The University of Texas Medical Branch, who discussed how online connectedness has changed teens’ relationships and introduced new challenges.
