51:360 June - July 2018 We’re finalists!

Welcome back!

We’re thrilled to announce that two of our projects are finalists in the Best Awards 2018! Sitting in the ‘Repurposed Spaces’ category is the Te Aka Mauri Rotorua Library, a refurbished health and library hub that reflects Rotorua’s identity, a culturally and spiritually appropriate expression of Te Arawa identity.

Welcome to the latest edition of 51:360. We hope you’re enjoying the colder months and are making the most of the snow! This edition is a busy one, we share some exciting award wins and project acknowledgements, showcase personal achievements, announce our four BST10 Readiness survey winners, welcome our new starters, and more! If you have a story you’d like to share, feel free to send it in, we love receiving them! Just email nzcomms@ghd.com. Happy reading!

Sitting in the same category is the Auckland Sanford office fitout. The historic building required seismic restrengthening to bring it up to code, and it was during this work that the beauty of the extraordinary brickwork and unique building structure was discovered! The result is a paradoxically timeless yet historic fitout that is a joy for staff and visitor alike.

Matariki celebrations Our offices came together for morning tea in celebration of Matariki, the beginning of Maori New Year. Some offices were joined by speakers and guests who talked about the meaning behind Matariki and the importance it plays in ancient and modern Maori culture. We hope you all had a very happy Matariki.

Escaping the Escapade Our National Architecture team escaped the office for an afternoon of strategy and teamwork at Escapade NZ. Our teams had 60 minutes to solve clues and puzzles and break out of the room they were locked in. All teams managed to escape in 60 minutes or less, what an excellent way to finish off the week!

Exploring the future Infrastructure in NZ Leaders from public and private sector organisations gathered at our Auckland office recently, to discuss findings of a report by Infrastructure New Zealand, around enabling city growth. In April, Infrastructure New Zealand led a delegation of New Zealand representatives, including Dave Proctor, Market Leader Transport, NZOC, to four growing US cities – Portland, Denver, Dallas and Houston. Each is growing more affordably than Auckland, but Dallas and Houston more responsively and affordably than Portland and Denver. The delegation focussed on how they are doing, what they’re doing and what can we learn? GHD hosted the dinner, transforming our boardroom into an elegant oasis, where guests could discuss the findings and recommendations of the report in an open environment. Al Monro, Sioban Hartwell and Dave Proctor represented GHD at the event. “The conversations were very constructive and it was great to spend time with people who are very committed and driven to make a change,” says Al. We will also be taking part in Infrastructure New Zealand’s annual Building Nations Symposium in Auckland in August.

SPCA drive Teams from our Auckland office helped some friends in need at the SPCA. Blankets, towels, toys and pet food were donated, leaving the SPCA extremely grateful for the abundantly filled boxes we’d left behind! Thank you to those who donated - if you are interested in learning more about how to donate, visit their website here.

Smart Seeds Wellington

Taramakau Bridge Opening

On Wednesday 8th August we had the pleasure of hosting our Smart Seeds Wellington Showcase event at the Harbourside Function Centre on Wellington Waterfront. Our teams had the opportunity to present their final solutions to a panel of judges and leaders from the Wellington region. The final solutions were; BE Wellington, Coach and Scout, Know Naenae, Torokiki, Suburban Work Hubs to get Welly Moving. ‘Torokiki’ took out the Judges Award, while ‘Coach and Scout’ won People’s Choice. It was a fantastic evening and we have already had interest from several organisations to get some of the solutions implemented into the Region. A big congratulations to our GHD participants, Joel Rowan, Jordyn Landers, Ian Robertson, Dillon Ngan and Jane Hancock.

The Taramakau Bridge between Greymouth and Kumara Junction, was the last on the West Coast of New Zealand to combine rail and road traffic, resulting in a serious crash history. We are delighted to have partnered with NOVARE DESIGN to separate the transport modes and provide two new bridges, supporting the NZ Transport Agency’s initiatives for improved safety and efficiency on the road network. On Sunday, David Mallett and Nicola Hopman joined the NZ Transport Agency and a large crowd to celebrate the opening of the new bridge. For more information on the project, click here.

Auckland With our Smart Seeds Auckland Showcase just one sleep away, our participants have been working incredibly hard, practicing their pitch and preparing for the final step in our 11-week programme. The final solutions for Auckland are Rethinking Disruption, Timebank AKL, Flexceptional, A Clean Start, Rise2It, Zero Carbon Kids. We have a record number of guests attending our Showcase and we are looking forward to seeing our teams present their final solutions! Linkedin: Smart Seeds

Welcome to the world! We’re delighted to welcome this tiny treasure to the GHD family!

LGNZ conference GHD were proud sponsors of the closing keynote speaker at this year’s Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) conference in Christchurch. Sioban Hartwell introduced Daniel Flynn who spoke on ‘Shaping the Future of our Communities.’ This year’s conference was about future-proofing for a prosperous and vibrant New Zealand, including climate change, sustainability, localism and the health and wellbeing of our communities. We’re so proud to be working closely with our clients to help shape the future of our communities! GHD Advisory’s David Walker discussed Water Reform at the LGNZ conference and noted that although there was general acceptance of the need for change, the degree of change and the composition of this still requires further thinking. If you’d like to read David’s full article, click here.

NZYP Committee Engineers Without Borders Auckland Our Auckland Community Committee were Gold sponsors at the Engineers Without Borders Humanitarian Engineering Conference at the beginning of July. Evan Mayson and Roanna Purcaru presented on their experiences working in the Pacific development sector. Overall it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the great work we’re doing to help our communities!

Week of Engineering The Week of Engineering is finally here! Some of our YP Committee members in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch have been busy planning and organising fun and interactive learning experiences they will showcase as exhibitors! The Week of Engineering is an annual event that inspires young minds to think about those future possibilities, feeding children’s natural curiosity about the world and how it works. Come and say hi to us at the free expos and explore innovations in engineering, with interactive displays, games and competitions with your little ones! For more information on where you can attend, click here.

Otakaro Orchard brickmaking workshop Otakaro Orchard is a community garden venture that’s working towards creating a community hub on their site. Back in May, a team of 16 volunteers from GHD’s Christchurch office, accompanied by the Christchurch YP Community team, headed down to Otakaro Orchard to learn how to make bricks which will be used in the building of a community this space. The event was a great success, where we managed to make 68 bricks!

We will be getting another team together once the workshops start back up again in September, so keep an eye out for an event invitation! If you’re interested in helping out communities or have any suggestions of where we can go next, get in touch with the YP committee members in your office!

Getting real with VR We had a busy evening at our Auckland office with our National Architecture team hosting Fletcher Living, showcasing a wide variety of projects with interactive Virtual Reality simulations and rendered visualisations. The VR headsets created a fully immersive environment to experience what a final building product would look and feel like!

The evening presented the potential and future growth in digital technologies, which we at GHD are fully embracing to create new opportunities and provide better service and solutions to our clients.

We’re winners!

On 15 June, GHD and GHDWoodhead creativespaces were recognised for creating amazing building projects across New Zealand. Our teams have received Property Council New Zealand Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards for work spanning architecture, engineering and interior fit-out. Our Planning and Civil team has received an excellence award for Wakatipu High School, one of the most modern and innovative schools in New Zealand, located in Queenstown. The new 1200 student facility has been designed to achieve a 5 Green Star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council. Our work has included wastewater, stormwater and water supply design, including using innovative raingardens and swales to exceed stormwater treatment requirements.

GHDWoodhead creativespaces also earned a merit award for the interior fit-out design for Goodman Property Trust’s Viaduct Quarter office in Auckland. Instead of assigned desks, the new flexible and agile workplace features a mix of quiet spaces, phone booths, soft seating and meeting spaces. Design elements such as polished concrete floors, soda-blasted columns, exposed ceilings and services, form an industrial aesthetic that is complemented with creative planting and warm timber to showcase the client’s organisation and brand.

She’s a finalist! Kate Macdonald, a Senior Electrical Engineer in our Christchurch office has been chosen as a finalist in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Design’ category for the Hays National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Excellence Awards! This award recognises the achievements of an outstanding individual’s contribution to a construction project. Kate has been recognised for her work on the University of Canterbury Students Association (UCSA) building. Best of luck Kate!

GHDWoodhead creativespaces has received a merit award for The Gate, an industrial warehouse in Auckland. To create an attractive environment for tenants on a constrained site, the design gave careful consideration to the building appearance. The instantly recognisable design is distinct from the adjacent warehouse developments, whilst integrating with the surroundings.

The awards will be held in Auckland on the 17th August.

Joy Chen goes back to Uni!

Dancing toward two Current vacancies wins!

.. in a different way! Joy Chen was delighted to present to the Disaster Risk Management class at the University of Auckland around the causes of flood risks, and how to generate overland flowpaths using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Jesse Peeters was a participant in this year’s Viva Eclectika intercultural dancing competition! His dancing group, ‘Grandpa and Grandma’ were presented with $2,000 and an award for ‘Best Item for Asian Fusion’. Viva Eclectika is an intercultural music and dance contest, organised by the NZ Asia Association to bridge cultures through dance and art.

Many students walked into the class with little to no knowledge around her topic and as a result, they walked away eager to learn more and even asked Joy for her notes! It was an excellent experience for all parties, Joy was thrilled to have the opportunity to teach the students, and found it a great opportunity to promote GHD and build stronger connections with the University, having graduated 14 years ago. Joy is currently liaising with Dr Alice Zhang-Richards at the University on returning to teach the class on another topic: Spatial Data Quality and Standard, which will help students understand the foundation on GIS data management for future work.

Calwell Slipway Remediation: Complete GHD played a key role in the remediation project of Port Nelson’s Calwell Slipway basin, which came to an end in June! This wound up an eight year process to remediate sediments contaminated with toxic chemicals historically used, including antifouling paints and other by products of vessel maintenance. The success of the project resulted in a solution that provides the port with additional land that can be used for operations, and also removes the contamination from the marine environment. Read more about this on our website here.

This was Jesse’s first year performing in the Viva Eclectika competition and thought it was an inspiring, fun and challenging event. Jesse and his partner were introduced to the Chinese dance group by Joy Chen (who is on the NZAA committee for organising this event), who they teamed up with for the competition. The Chinese dance team had an average age of over 60, with the lead dancer in her 70’s, the team also won the second prize in 2016. Jesse has been dancing lindy hop and other dance styles from the swing era for 6 years. He enjoys performing in competitions and shows and loves recreating old routines from the 1930-40’s! He also teaches dance once per week and has a passion for social dancing to live jazz music – which provides a good chance to unwind after a day of engineering. If you’d like to watch the performance, click here!

BST10 & Concur Expense: We made it! Congratulations, we are now live with BST10 and Concur Expense, and feedback from around the regions suggests that so far so good! Many thanks to everyone for the time and effort that you spent attending training and completing the required tasks to some pretty tight timeframes, in order for us to ensure we could successfully bill clients for July. Hopefully by now you are becoming familiar with the new Timesheet functionality and are picking up some tips and tricks that will make it even easier. Good to see everyone getting stuck in and completing their timesheets – and we do mean everyone!

BST10 Readiness Survey Winners Recently we ran an online survey to gauge your level of readiness for the rollout and a huge thank you to the 172 people who responded to the survey. The results were really positive and encouraging, a lot of positive feedback was received, plus some improvement suggestions which we will follow up on. There were also some great questions, most of which will be answered in later PM sessions. As promised, as a thank you to those of you who completed the survey, we have 4 $150 Prezzy cards to give away and the lucky winners are: • • • •

If you need any assistance, please refer to the BST10 Global and Concur Expense portals, or ask your local Champions!

The opening of the Fred Thomas Drive pump station and underground storage tank in Auckland’s North Shore with Auckland Mayor, Phil Goff, was our top post for June and July receiving a whopping 7.41% engagement! (Defined here.) GHD designed the wastewater storage and pump facility and associated pipelines, which has resulted in a significant reduction of wastewater overflows into Auckland’s harbour, improving the overall operational resilience of the wastewater network. Read more about the project on our website here!

Who says working isn’t fun!? Over the last two weeks, eight of our GHD Engineers, Emma Figliola, Paul Clarke, Kurt Thomson, Peter McBride, Simon Wall, Arthur Bringas, Louis Wong and Matt Anderson, have been working their way around the Middle East and South East Asia undertaking a MFAT Project. They have been lucky enough to visit Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Yangon, Jakarta, Pretoria, New Delhi and Addis Ababa. Some of these Countries they would never have dreamed of visiting.

The Sustainable Future Collective We were proud sponsors of The Sustainable Future Collective’s ‘Your Future in Sustainability’ event at the University of Auckland. Kenneth Mascarenhas joined a panel of speakers who discussed their personal journey into sustainability, and explored how it can be incorporated into daily lives. Kenneth emphasised that sustainability should become a habit. It can be as easy as saying no to plastic bags at the supermarket!

While the travel has been long and the programme is tight, the team have kept up morale despite Abu Dhabi in 43 degree heat along with the high temperatures in other Countries.

As Project Coordinator, Emma Figliola worked out of the GHD Abu Dhabi office; “It’s like home away from home, the people are lovely, welcoming and friendly. The teams have been flying in and out of Abu Dhabi on their rest breaks so it’s been great catching up with them for a meal. I would never have thought I would be in Abu Dhabi working on a project, it’s an amazing experience”. If you are wanting to experience this kind of work in the future where you get to spread your wings while working and experiencing different cultures then GHD is the place to be, who says working isn’t fun!

2WALKandCYCLE conference We were proud sponsors of the Business Lounge at this year’s 2WALKandCYCLE conference in Palmerston North! The conference showcases ways to achieve the goal of healthier, smarter and more liveable cities through shared transport systems, outlining ways to improve our roading networks to balance the needs of all users. Nicola Hopman presented at the tools of the trade session where she discussed ways of ‘using MultiCriteria Analysis (MCA) to define cycleway routes.’
