Since 2015, GHD has been an instrumental partner in supporting the Australian Government’s Sports Diplomacy strategy which aims to seize the opportunity to step up Australia’s international engagement through sport and use sport as an innovative vehicle to strengthen communities and tackle social issues in the Indo-Pacific.

Improving the health, gender equality and wellbeing of Asian and Pacific communities through socially inclusive and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects.

Through the Pacific Sports Partnerships II (2015 – 2018), Australia’s flagship sport for development initiative, GHD has facilitated partnerships between the Australian Government and Australian, regional and Pacific Island sports organisations to deliver activities to address the primary risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases and address inequalities experienced by women, girls and people living with a disability across nine Pacific Island countries. GHD is now managing the transition from PSP to the next program, the Australian Sports Partnerships Program (ASPP) which will commence on 1st July, 2020 and help build safe, fair and accessible sporting organisations in 10 countries in Asia and the Pacific. The program will increase participation of women and girls in sport and encourage disability inclusion, social cohesion and healthy lifestyles. 6 | International Development Assistance | GHD

Water for Women is partnering with nine Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to deliver 18 WASH projects in 15 countries in the Asia Pacific region and multiple research organisations to deliver 11 research projects. Gender equality and social inclusion are central to Water for Women. Actively involving all people within communities (women, men, marginalised groups, people with disabilities) ensures more equitable and inclusive processes, which lead to more effective and sustainable outcomes in water, sanitation and hygiene. Water for Women is the Australian Government’s flagship WASH program and is being delivered by GHD as the Fund Coordinator. Find out more about at waterforwomenfund.org

The Ebeye Water Supply and Sanitation Project will increase access to safe water and sanitation and promote behavioural change to improve hygiene standards on Ebeye. GHD is delivering this project for the Government of the Republic of Marshall Islands in partnership with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Australian Government.

GHD in association with Beca International Limited, has been engaged by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to undertake an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) in the Bago Region of Myanmar.

The project is aiming to achieve: •

Secure and safe freshwater supplies and effective, and efficient sewerage services

Secure electricity supply for water supply and sewerage operations

Enhanced hygiene awareness and improved hygiene behaviours

8 | International Development Assistance | GHD

The purpose of the ESIA is to identify and assess the potential impacts of the Lower Bawgata Hydropower (82MW capacity) Project on the biophysical and social environments and to recommend mitigation measures to avoid, manage or reduce the adverse impacts of the project to acceptable levels. Key impact assessments comprised Hydrology, Erosion and Sedimentation; Surface Water Quality and Hydrogeology; Soils, Agriculture and Land Use; Noise and Vibration; Air Quality Greenhouse Gases; Aquatic Ecology and Environmental Flows; Terrestrial Ecology; Traffic and Transport; Waste Management; Social; Landscape and Visual; Climate and Geophysical Hazards; and Cumulative Impacts.

The New Zealand Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is supporting Papua New Guinea (PNG) in its ambitious goal of expanding energy access to 70% of the population by 2030.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) supports the acceleration of wind energy development in Indonesia through a Project Preparatory Technical Assistance (PPTA).

MFAT has tentatively allocated NZD50 million (approx. PGK110 million) over the next five years (to mid-2021) to the PNG Renewable Energy Programme, the objective of which is to increase rural access to reliable and sustainable energy in a cost effective way. To assist MFAT in achieving their its aim, GHD mobilised a team in PNG to provide effective community-wide consultation and a thorough technical assessment. The team was made up of specialists from New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea offices and assisted by our local GHD office in Port Moresby.

GHD, in association with PT Hatfield Inc, a local sub-consultant, was engaged to prepare of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, consistent with the Indonesian AMDAL (Environmental Impact Assessment) process and ADB safeguards standards and policies. The project provided support for grid integration, environmental and social studies across the selected sites in Banten and South Sulawesi and provided specific recommendations for grid upgrade, in order to absorb the instability of electrical output for each site. The environmental and social assessments included reviews of environmental constraints analyses, as well as biodiversity and socio-economic baseline studies based on international best practice, ADB safeguards, and as required by the Indonesian government for wind farm developments.

With population of approximately 17,000, Luganville is Vanuatu’s second largest urban area and is projected to grow to 25,000 by 2020. Luganville is an important cruise ship destination and trans-shipment hub for the northern islands of Vanuatu and it can also be an important hub during times of natural disaster.

Building Partner Capacity - to deliver a facility that provides a logistics node for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) capability for the Fijian Government and RFMF

Existing, aged urban infrastructure and facilities are inadequate to service the growing demands of the town. There is also the added challenge of growing informal settlements in the shadow of natural hazards and climate change. GHD assisted the Luganville Municipal Council, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Asian Development Bank (ADB)/ Cities Development Initiative for Asia in developing the Luganville Integrated Development Plan. The project identified priority projects and prepared them to feasibility level for future ADB support. GHD’s technical assistance covered planning in the areas of transport, water supply, sanitation, solid waste, flooding and drainage, coastal protection and electricity. GHD engaged in extensive analysis and stakeholder engagement in order to determine the capacity, dimensions and timing of key infrastructure projects whilst also undertaking capacity development with local authorities. 10 | International Development Assistance | GHD
