Senate reform can’t be done by Ottawa alone Senate reform can’t be done by Ottawa alone Canada’s top court says 7 provinces with half the population needed for any reform The Supreme Court of Canada says the federal government does not have the power to enact most of the changes it has proposed for the Senate without the support of the provinces. In a unanimous decision released Friday, eight judges of the top court concluded that implementing fixed terms for senators or provincial elections for Senate candidates would require

the consent of seven provinces representing half the population. The government had asked whether it could legislate these changes on its own. On the key question of how the Senate could be abolished, the court said the consent of all the provinces would be necessary. The only reform the government can make unilaterally, according to the court, is to eliminate the archaic requirement that senators must own at least $4,000 worth of property in the province they represent. Prime Minister Stephen

Harper, speaking at an event in Kitchener, Ont., said the ruling was a “decision for the status quo,” a status quo that “is supported by virtually no Canadian.” “The Supreme Court today essentially said that for any important Senate reform of any kind, as well as abolition, these are (steps) only the provinces can take. We know that there is no consensus among the provinces on reform, no consensus on abolition, and no desire of anyone to re-open the constitution and have a bunch of constitutional cont'd on pg. 14

Canada’s Refugee Determination System Need Overhaul

In furtherance of its obligations as a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Status of Refugees adopted in 1951, Canada has been accepting refugees and persons fleeing from persecution into Canada as Refugee Claimants over the years. It is in line with this process that Canada developed a Refugee Determination system to process persons who arrive at our borders asking for protection under the United Nations Convention. It was under this process that the Conservative government under Brian Mulroney established the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) under the Refugee Protection Act, to undertake hearings from refugee claimants. The Board was charged with the responsibility of determining the “credibility” of claims made either at Canada’s ports of entry or inside Canada by persons claiming fear of persecution from their countries of origin or places of habitual residence. The Immigration and Refugee Board was structured to be an “independent” quasi-judicial body supposed to operate at arm’s length from the government of the day. It was supposed to hear refugee claims based solely on the facts presented to them and the legal guidelines assigned to it. However the inauguration of the original Board from 1989 was fraught from the start with contradictions and partisanship. All the Members who were appointed to the first Board across the country in 1989 were either Conservative Party card-holding members or sympathizers of the Brian Mulroney government of the day. The integrity and supposed “independence” of the Board was thus compromised right from the start. Many decisions rendered by (IRB) Board Members were questionable depending on the expectations of the government as to which countries they could accept refugees from.

Refugee rights advocates have protested and demanded, over the years, for a change in the way the URB operates, especially under its strange principle of refugee claimants being deemed guilty and liars until they proved themselves otherwise. In response to these agitations and demands, various Canadian governments since 1989, have tried to make changes to the compositions and modus operandi of the IRB. However the changes Letters to the Editor have rather worsened the situation and poor and frightened refugee claimants have paid the price We encourage your feedback and value for these mistakes, ineptitudes and incompetence your comments. We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Periodical Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage

The situation of refugees and refugee claimants has been worse under the Harper government over the past nine years. The government has sought to tighten the screws on refugees and refugee claimants with the aim of making life as difficult as possible to deter more people from coming to Canada as refugees or refugee claimants. One of the most inhuman things the Harper government did in 2012 was to withdraw health care coverage for refugees in Canada so once in this country, refugees can only pray that they do not get sick. If they do, they should either find the money for their own treatment or pray to their God to save them. Despite loud and strong protests from civil society organizations, lawyers, refugee rights advocates and some Provincial governments, Harper and his government have stood their grounds. The situation is becoming very dire and grave for a lot of refugees in Canada. We therefore call on the Federal government to heed the pleas and demands to restore and grant health coverage to refugees in Canada. Refugee protection is about human rights and providing health care for them is certainly one of the human rights issues that this population group faces.

Opinion/ Commentary NPP Better off to Re-nominate Akufo-Addo for the 2016 Presidential Elections By Kwabena Akuoko Notwithstanding its recent successful Tamale Delegates’ Conference, infighting continues to rock Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP). And one of the primary reasons for the bickering is over Honorable Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to run again on the party’s ticket for the 2016 presidential elections. Some NPP’s bigwigs are dead set against their leader’s decision to contest the party’s presidential nomination for the third consecutive time simply because of his age. The chief concern is that by the time the writ is signed for the next elections in December 2016, Mr. Akufo-Addo will be 72 years of age of which they consider as too old as a formidable opponent against the youthful President Mahama. The idea that the seasoned politician’s age is a possible stumbling block to NPP’s electoral victory in 2016 is misplaced. My stance is that if there is any basis for Akufo-Addo to be denied NPP’s re-nomination to run for the presidency again, his age should not be the rationale. Before I proceed any further though, I want to set the record straight by stating that I write in defense of the NPP leader on the basis of my strong anti-ageism stance and democratic principles, and not as his supporter. M r. A k u f o Addo’s age is unfortunately deciphered as a huge liability that might deprive NPP the presidency in 2016. Those who oppose his decision to seek the party’s renomination because of his age are simply oblivious that there is a strong correlation between maturity and effective political leadership. As a well tested public figure who has given much to the service of our country, Akufo-Addo embodies public service and deserves another chance at his party’s renomination for the next presidential elections. A s a l e a d e r, Honorable AkufoAddo has variously demonstrated his

profound commitment to the democratic wellbeing of Ghana. He for instance played a pivotal role in maintaining tranquility during one of our country’s watershed moments relative to the precariousness, which surrounded the results of the December 2012 presidential elections and the subsequent judicial entanglements that ultimately tipped the verdict to his opponent’s f a v o u r. A m i d h u g e political fretfulness, Mr. Akufo-Addo promptly accepted the Supreme Court’s judgment and wisely appealed to his supporters to do likewise. He profoundly demonstrated his leadership expertise and love for our country then. It is therefore unfortunate that some top members within his own party who are supposed to support him are contrary using his age to try to deny him the opportunity to lead the party through the next presidential elections. Those who try to use others’ age as an excuse to deny them leadership opportunities in forward-looking democracies have been repeatedly proven wrong before. For example, some within the Republican Party in the United States raised concerns over Roland Reagan’s bid for the party’s nomination in 1980 because of his age. He was approximately 70 years old when he won the party’s nomination and later won the presidency, and was almost 80 years old when he finished his second term. Also, if at 75 years of age, Nelson Mandela was elected as President of South Africa, I see no reason why AkufoAddo’s party should not re-nominate him to run for Ghana’s top political job at age 72. Regardless of their age, Reagan and Mandela successfully led their respective countries through turbulent economic and political eras. Their positive political legacies are a testament that maturity matters in political leadership because it is synonymous with wisdom and experience. Unless the NPP’s constitution prohibits

Mr. Akufo-Addo to be the party’s nominee for president again because of his of age, then he ought to be re-nominated. I hasten to even suggest that his re-nomination should be unopposed. His unopposed re-nomination will send a strong message to the electorate that NPP appreciates his strong and experienced leadership and it is solidly behind him regardless of his age. It is a huge mistake for others to narrow-mindedly focus on the leader’s age and deny him re-nomination. Akufo-Addo has earned his mark in the service of Ghana and proven to be a dedicated l e a d e r. T h e r e f o r e , irrespective of his age, the man deserves to be given another chance to likely serve in the highest capacity. And it should be up to the voting public to decide whether or not to elect him as their next president. It is simply a huge misstep for some NPP bigwigs to use age as a benchmark to deprive him the renomination to run for the presidency again. We have come a long way as a country to now have a democracy where we elect our leaders every four years. But campaigning for elected positions whether internally within various political parties, parliamentary seats or the presidency tends to be inconsistent with democratic standards. Strong emphasis on issues that matter to the people and most importantly, candidates’ wealth of experience coupled with their leadership abilities are some of the central foundations upon which elections must be contested. A candidate’s age should not be an issue for political leadership position unless that individual has serious psychological, physical and other impairments. Therefore, other than some NPP’s stalwarts deeming their leader’s age as a possible stumbling block to Ghana’s top political job, they should rather rally behind him and strategize about how they can successfully convince voters that their leader is the best alternate to the incumbent president.

Ottawa posts $5.1B surplus in February

The Ghanaian News

The federal treasury has reported its biggest monthly surplus since the recession, suggesting that Ottawa will handily beat the current fiscal year’s deficit projection the government released in last month’s budget. The Department of Finance said Friday it took in $5.1 billion more in February than it spent. The massive surplus came about largely because of higher personal and corporate income tax revenues. Personal income tax revenues were up by $1 billion, a 9.9 per cent jump from the same month in 2013. Corporate tax revenues rose by $700 million, or 10.9 per cent. Program spending in the month was up just $100 million, or 0.5 per cent, compared to a year earlier. The February surplus follows two other big monthly surpluses — $2.2 billion in January, and $1.1 billion in December. The latest surplus numbers leave Ottawa’s monthly accounts with a $5.4-billion deficit for the first 11 months of the fiscal year. That’s half the $10.7-billion

Ottawa faced at the same time a year ago. The federal budget in March projected that by the time the books are finalized for the 2013-14 fiscal year, the deficit would come in at $16.6 billion. So with only the numbers from March left to report in the current fiscal year, that figure seems likely to be bettered. In last month’s budget, Ottawa projected a $2.9-billion deficit for 2014-15 and a $6.4-billion surplus by 2015-16. The

Department of Finance said the latest fiscal numbers show that “the government remains on track to balance the budget in 2015.” But barring something unforeseen, many e c o n o m i s t s s a y i t ’s possible the federal books will be balanced by the 2014-15 fiscal year, a year earlier than Ottawa’s official projections. That could give the Harper government room to offer tax breaks in next year’s budget — just ahead of the scheduled October election CBC News

Ottawa to propose new pension scheme, but not budging on CPP Shared-risk plans to be sold as proposal for ‘affordable and sustainable’ lifetime pensions Ottawa is preparing to announce a proposal to create yet another new pension scheme designed to occupy a middle ground between definedbenefit plans, generally favoured by workers, and defined-contribution plans favoured by employers. The announcement for a so-called target benefit plan, or shared-risk plan, would apply to Crown corporations and federally regulated workers is being sold as a proposal for “affordable and sustainable” lifetime pensions. Government sources say Kevin Sorenson, minister of state for finance, will call for public consultations on the scheme in a speech at the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto on Thursday. Details are scarce, but target-benefit plans are generally advertised as capable of adjusting the funding-benefits formula to account for bad times, such as the recent economic crisis that put many defined-benefit plans in jeopardy. Classic plans ‘a little brittle’ C.D. Howe Institute president Bill Robson says there is a wide number of permutations that can be written into the plans, including limiting indexing as has occurred under the Ontario teacher’s plan, all the way to lowering actual benefits once a plan’s funding level falls below a pre-proscribed threshold. As well, the plans could allow for a portion of benefits to be guaranteed and a portion based on investment returns. “I think the problem with classic defined benefit plans is that they are a little brittle and can’t adjust for changing circumstances,” he said.

introduced at Crown corporations and on a voluntary basis in federally regulated transportation, banking and telecommunications sectors. Sorenson is also unlikely to relax his opposition to expanding the Canada Pension Plan, an initiative favoured by Ontario and Prince Edward Island but one that Ottawa believes will cost jobs because it would entail raising premiums on workers and firms. Ontario to go it alone on CPP expansion Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa said in a speech Wednesday that his province is still planning to go it alone with a CPP top-off if necessary, accusing Sorenson of misrepresenting the issue with statements that it could cost up to 70,000 jobs. He notes that a federal report, obtained by The Canadian Press, calculated the job losses on premium increases being introduced all at once, while all provincial proposals call for long phase-in periods. The province also released a research paper co-authored by former Bank of Canada governor David Dodge that backed its call for enhancing CPP. Dodge, who co-wrote the report with Richard Dion, a senior business adviser with Bennett Jones, concluded the damage to the economy from higher premiums would be minimal and more than made up for in future benefits. “An increase in household saving would exert a relatively small and short-lived drag on the economy while its positive structural impact on growth would be long-lived and could be relatively quite significant, but only manifest after a period of time,” the report concludes. CFIB would vehemently oppose premium hike

Ottawa has announced several recent reforms to its public-service pension plan, including hiking contributions, but has kept benefits, which are fully indexed for inflation, largely untouched.

In December, then finance minister Jim Flaherty and Sorenson rejected a joint Ontario-Prince Edward Island proposal for CPP expansion, maintaining that the economy was too fragile.

Dan Kelly of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, which has been influential on Ottawa’s thinking on the pension issue, said New Brunswick is leading the way in the area and has put legislation in place to negotiate with their public service unions.

Ironically, Dodge and Dion calculate that recent government cost-cutting has done exactly what Flaherty and Sorensen claim to have feared from CPP expansion.

“We’re very supportive of this because the target benefit might be a nice compromise between a defined-contribution and a defined-benefit plan,” he said. “That model may be a way out of jail for many government entities that are trapped under the weight of an expensive and largely unfunded publicsector defined-benefit pension plan.” The announcement Thursday likely won’t set out details, and won’t affect the core public service. “Efforts by the federal government in recent years to eliminate its budget deficit have reduced aggregate demand at a time when the economy has been operating below potential,” they note. “This reduction was likely greater than the modest negative impact than an increase in household saving due to CPP enhancement, if implemented, would have.” Kelly said his organization would vehemently oppose any measure to increase premiums on firms. He said there is no study that shows there would be no effect on the economy. The Canadian Press

South Korea ferry: Hundreds missing as ship sinks Almost 300 people remain unaccounted for after a ferry carrying 459 people capsized and sank off South Korea. The ferry, carrying mainly school students, was travelling from the port of Incheon, in the north-west, to the southern resort island of Jeju. South Korean TV networks are constantly replaying dramatic footage of the rescue efforts before the ferry sinks. It shows an armada of small boats motoring right up beside the ferry, which listed heavily on its side before sinking. Rescuers are seen desperately grabbing teenagers out of the water before they are swept away by the currents and undertow. Other footage shows helicopters throwing orange life rafts to passengers bobbing on the sea. Some of the passengers are then winched to safety. What makes this accident even more distressing is the fact that among those on board were high school students on a trip to a holiday island. Relatives and friends of those on board are posting on social media sites asking for any news or information about loved ones. On Facebook many South Koreans are re-posting a yellow ribbon to symbolise the hope that the missing may still be found alive. “Please, please survive and come back,” the message reads. “We love you guys.”

Passengers from the ferry are rescued by a South Korean coast guard helicopter on 16 April 2014 Military and civilian ships and helicopters have been searching for survivors South Korea Coast Guard members search near a South Korean ferry after it capsized on its way to Jeju island from Incheon on 16 April 2014 Reports said the ship capsized and sank within a period of two hours Teams of navy divers were now searching the scene for those unaccounted for, officials said, but the work was challenging. “There is so much mud in the sea water and the visibility is very low,” said Lee Gyeong-og, vice-minister of security and public administration. O n e b o d y, o f a f e m a l e c r e w member, had been recovered from the ship, the coastguard said. Another person, a male high school student, died after being rescued. One student told local media her friends became trapped. “Currently, I am in the middle of being rescued. At the time, the ship was turning on its side, and none of us were moving as we were told not to move as it was dangerous,” the unnamed student said. “So, I am not well aware of the situation, but I am told that my friends and other friends could not escape as the passage was blocked. It seems that there are many students who could not get out as the passage was blocked by water.”

Emergency teams are using floodlights and flares to search the stricken vessel through the night. Those rescued have been taken to a nearby island.

It is not yet clear what caused the incident, but witnesses described hearing an impact, before the ship listed and quickly sank.

Four people are now said to have died and dozens of others have been hurt.

One passenger told the YTN news channel: “We heard a big thumping sound and the boat stopped.”

South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error. They have now revised down the number rescued to 174. Images showed the ferry listing at a severe angle and then later almost completely submerged, with only a small part of its hull visible. It sank within two hours of sending a distress signal, reports said. There are fears this could turn out to be South Korea’s biggest maritime disaster for more than 20 years, says the BBC’s Martin Patience in Seoul. Several coast guard, military and commercial vessels were involved in the rescue effort, which unfolded rapidly on Wednesday morning. Pictures from the scene showed rescue teams balanced on the sinking hull pulling teenagers from cabin windows. Some of their classmates jumped into the sea as the ship went down.

Rescued passengers are brought to land in Jindo after a South Korean ferry carrying 476 passengers and crew sank on its way to Jeju island on 16 April 2014 Teams have brought rescued passengers to shore - at least 13 are reported to be hurt Maritime police search for missing passenger as lighting flares are released for a night search on 16 April 2014. Flares light up the sky as the search for missing passengers continues through the night Relative cries as she waits for missing passengers at a port in Jindo, South Korea, on 16 April 2014 Relatives of the missing are waiting to hear of the fate of their loved ones “The boat is tilting and we have to hold on to something to stay seated,” the passenger said. Another passenger said the ship was “shaking and tilting”, with people tripping and bumping into each other. Survivor: “There was an announcement telling us to sit still, but the ferry was already sinking”

Reports suggest some of those rescued were picked up by nearby commercial vessels.

South Korean President Park Geunhye has expressed sadness over the incident, saying it was “truly tragic” that students on a field trip were involved in “such an unfortunate accident”.

The US Navy has sent an amphibious assault ship, the USS Bonhomme Richard, to assist with the search, officials say.

Ukraine alert as politician ‘killed’ Ukraine’s acting president has relaunched military operations against proRussian militants in the east after two men, one a local politician, were found “tortured to death”. Oleksandr Turchynov said the politician, named as Vladimir Rybak, was found near rebel-held Sloviansk. “The terrorists who effectively took the whole Donetsk region hostage have now gone too far,” he said. The move came as US Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting Ukraine.

After meeting Ukrainian leaders in Kiev, Mr Biden called on Russia to “stop talking and start acting” to defuse the Ukraine crisis.

The US and the West accuse Russia of using undercover military to back separatists in eastern Ukraine, where public buildings are occupied in at least nine cities and towns. Russian denies this.

Toronto cop charged with murder gets desk job with Crime Stoppers

A Toronto police officer who is facing a charge of second-degree murder has quietly been given a desk job with Crime Stoppers, as his case winds its way through Ontario’s court system.

Const. James Forcillo was suspended with pay a few days after the shooting death of 1 8 - y e a r- o l d S a m m y Ya t i m l a s t s u m m e r. Chief Bill Blair decided to lift the suspension in February and allow the constable to work in an administrative role, police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray confirmed Thursday after the decision was revealed in a newspaper report. Gray said the decision to allow Forcillo to work followed an internal review that took a number of factors into consideration, including public interest and the “best interest” of the officer. Forcillo, who is free on bail, is working a fulltime position with the same salary, said his lawyer, Peter Brauti. Brauti said the police service had three options to consider at the end of its review - to keep the suspension in place, allow Forcillo to work an administrative job or allow him to return to active duty - as mandated by Ontario’s Police Services Act.

The lawyer said Forcillo is happy to be back at work.

“The officer should be able to return to work and continue to work as if he is innocent of the offences,” Brauti told reporters before Forcillo’s preliminary hearing resumed in the morning. Blair ’s decision left Yatim’s family feeling upset and lost, said family friend Joseph Nazar. “It’s basically a very big assault to the family, who are still grieving the loss of their loving son,” Nazar told CP24 reporter Cristina Tenaglia. “We just feel the police chief has made a very wrong decision.” At their last meeting, Blair and Toronto Police Services Board chair Alok Mukherjee seemed sympathetic to Yatim’s f a m i l y, N a z a r s a i d . “This is basically a slap in the face of the family,” he said.

Nazar said Yatim’s family is thankful Forcillo has not been reinstated to active duty, but they wanted the suspension to remain in place until the case is resolved. Gray said police will decide whether Forcillo will return to active police duty once the court proceedings are over. Forcillo in ‘super restricted’ role: union Mike McCormack, president of the Toronto Police Association, said Forcillo is in a “super restricted” role that would not have an impact on police operations or investigations. At work, Forcillo is not in uniform and he is not armed with any policeissued weapons. His bail conditions prohibit him from possession firearms. McCormack attempted to downplay any controversy surrounding the move. cont'd on pg. 32

FOCUS April 23 was World Book Day! By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, Teacher, Brookview Middle School, Toronto “Our goal is clear – to encourage authors and artists and to ensure that more women and men benefit from literacy and accessible formats, because books are our most powerful forces of poverty eradication and peace building. “-Irina Bokova In a world that sometimes seems over-burdened with conflict, World Book Night stands out as a precious beacon. It has two messages: one is that reading is sheer joy and the other is that the act of giving is intrinsically good. The energy that Jamie Byng and his team have brought to this lovely project is astonishing and wonderful. I hope this tradition goes on as long as books are made and read.Alexander McCall Smith Apart from oral tradition and artifacts, books have become the best means of preserving knowledge and cultures in our world. From the ancient papyrus and scrolls to the modern day eBooks, writing has been the permanent and organized way of preserving knowledge/

information! Well written books have helped readers become what they are today-from the Good Book (the Bible), the Koran, textbooks to soul-touching novels and simple recipe-books! These printed pages have turned people’s lives around! John Milton simply puts it this way, “reading maketh a man.” How can we read if there are no books? And how can there books if there are no authors, editors, publishers, artists (book illustrators) or booksellers? World Book Day/Night which is celebrated on April 23, yearly, is to honor the aforementioned individuals who are associated with

t h e b o o k i n d u s t r y. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), “23 April is a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a worldwide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. In this regard, UNESCO created the World Book and Copyright Day.” Wo r l d B o o k N i g h t

celebrated on the same day (especially in UK and Ireland) on the other hand is run by The Reading Agency as one of their programmes. The Reading Agency is an independent charity with a mission to give everyone an equal chance in life by helping people become confident and enthusiastic readers. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) says that 774 million people worldwide, including 123 million youth, cannot read or write, and illiteracy can often be traced to the lack of books. Most people in Sub-Saharan Africa do not own a single book, and schools in this region rarely provide textbooks to learners. L e t ’s C u l t i v a t e t h e Habit of Reading: Did you know that READING can keep your mind active and engaged well into old age? Reading is considered one of the best habits that one can inculcate in him. It leads one to knowledge!

The old Good Book says that ‘for lack of knowledge my people perish’. Yes, knowledge i s p o w e r. T h o u g h knowledge comes to us in many forms, it best comes in the pages of a book. However, we won’t know until we read what is written in the pages. Therefore reading is the key to knowledge. It is said that the one who reads is a leader! As a parent and a teacher by profession I can’t overemphasize the importance of reading to the teaching and learning process. Teachers always encourage their students to read. And students who read a lot excel in the academics. It is good to catch them young with reading! My experience as teacher both in Ghana and in Canada has shown me that most Ghanaian children either don’t like reading or not encouraged to read. The root of this problem is that most Ghanaians (adults) have not cultivated the good habit of reading. Many Ghanaians read only when they are going to

write tests which require reading or when they go to church; even at church many listen to the good readers! My observations in the classroom since 1973 have revealed that the best readers were and still are students who saw/see their parents reading. I therefore encourage all and sundry (especially educated Ghanaians) to cultivate the habit of reading. I n t e r e s t i n g l y, b o o k s are now even made available online so readers can find some good ones to read without going to the library to borrow books to read. May I use this opportunity of the World Book Day celebration to appeal to all Ghanaian parents to encourage their children to read for, ‘reading makes a person knowledgeable’. Let’s make our children more knowledgeable by reading to them if possible and get them to read to us frequently. There are a lot of good books out there for reading.

LEGAL MATTERS

Consequences of selective immigration amnesia

By Bode Odetoyinto, Mississauga Kwabena and & Esi plus six kids plan to immigrate to Canada. A “friend” advised them not to include all their six kids in their immigration application. “Your family is too large! Canada will refuse your application”. They believed this friend was speaking from a place of knowledge. They declared only two children in their application! A family of eight shrunk to a family of 4 on paper! Their application was successful. Canada approved all 4 of them. All four landed at Perason and became permanent Canadian residents. They settled down, both got good jobs and the two “Canadian kids” are doing very well in school. Two years later, Kwabena and Esi as good parents want all their family together in Canada. They submitted a sponsorship application to bring in the other 4 “ghost” kids. They did not get legal advice before they submitted their application. They did not recognise the danger in alerting Canada about the 4 other kids. By submitting this application, they are stating that their application was not entirely truthful. All

hell breaks loose. By this application, they unwittingly triggered arguably the most dangerous section of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Section 40 (1) (a) of this act states: “..a foreign national or permanent resident... is inadmissible for directly or indirectly misrepresenting or withholding material facts relating to a relevant matter that induces or could induce an error in the administration of this Act. What this me ans i n simple English is:  A foreign national or Permanent R e s i d e n t  c a n

or withholding as far as immigration is concerned, it matters  Material facts n o t w h e t h e r t h e misrepresentation or  R e l a t i n g t o withholding was direct a r e l e v a n t or indirect. Provided m a t t e r w h i c h the matter is relevant, they are required to  I n d u c e s o r disclose it at the time of c o u l d i n d u c e the application. Every immigration applicant  An error in the owes Canada a positive administration duty to disclose to Canada: of this Act.  W h e n t h e r e What happens from here? is a change of Kwabena and Esi will circumstances receive courier(s) from from when Canada inviting them they applied; for a “chat” about their misrepresentation. They  When a statute will be required to bring requires the to in all their and their kids disclose; or landed papers, documents and permanent resident  W h e n the cards. This is the first surrounding step on a very lonely circumstances and expensive journey r e q u i r e to possible removal from Canada. They should seek legal representation immediately or at least prior to attending this i m m i g rat i o n “ch at ”. The question then is this. Are Kwabena and Esi inadmissible to Canada by virtue of not disclosing the true size of their family? Does this amount Suitable For: to a misrepresentation of a material fact which * Funerals induced or could induce an * Weddings error in the administration of the Act? Any guesses? * Outdoorings

disclosure, even if no specific question was asked. K w a b e n a a n d E s i ’s non disclosure of their other children in their original application is a misrepresentation of a material fact which could lead to a deportation of the entire family even though they are technically permanent residents!. So here’s what every immigration applicant should bear in mind: 1. Avoid concealing material fact(s) for fear of being d e n i e d e n t r y. 2. Be completely truthful and deal with any difficult or awkward facts separately

in the application. 3. Even if an applicant does not know of a material fact, if it is found to be a material fact which was “withheld” or “misrepresented”, then it is a misrepresentation i n d i r e c t l y regardless of the lack of subjective knowledge or innocent misrepresentation. Of course for refugee applicants, slightly different considerations might apply....but that is a topic for another day. Denise Odetoyinbo is a Mississauga based Lawyer. Let's Talk Politics

The Opposition Party and Democratic Consolidation By Dr. Francis Wiafe-Amoako, Toronto The role of the opposition political party in democratic consolidation cannot be overemphasized. And in the developing world where democratic transitions and consolidation face enormous challenges, this discussion could not have come at an appropriate time. I always argue, just as many others, that some form of a generally accepted rule is better than no rules at all when it comes to the relationship between government and the people. This is because a space would be created for both those who believed in the rules and those who don’t to battle each other to arrive at some equilibrium. Even at that equilibrium, the system is still not stable because, as social beings our needs change, new priorities become available, new technologies for efficiency may arise, and a newer equilibrium may have to be established. In fact a political system needs some disequilibrium every now and then to engender new ideas, stability, and development. I remember when mass computer usage became the norm in the late 1980s and data needs to be processed using computers, those that were used to using typewriters and entering accounting data in books panicked greatly. Some lost their jobs, and others received training that made them transition to the new way of life. I will not even talk about the outright rejection of the new technology by some section of the population. All said, I wonder what we will do today if computers and other of technology (i.e. internet access), were turned off for just one hour. I would not speculate at this time. Our life has been improved and transformed so much we actually love the current impact of technology, and we look forward to newer and efficient technology to be made available. Back to politics; when some form of a democratic system is chosen, the rules and norms become encapsulated in institutions. Once those institutions are put in place, this same institution assumes a personality that begins to shape the behaviors of the people that set up those institutions.

Take the police service for instance, once it is established, the service is capable of structuring the behavior of the people that establish it. The same is true with schools. In the area of politics, whatever system that is put in place shapes the behavior and expectations of political leaders and the society. I must say here that no political party in government is greater than the rules that brought it into office. As I write this article, I have in mind the attitude of opposition parties, which tends to be relaxation and also being intimidated because they are not in government. They allow the party in government to have a field day for the term (some 4 years before elections), and they only begin to fight back when the next election draws near. This is a huge disservice which in actual fact may be too late for any opportunity an opposition party will have in winning an election. What does a party do when it finds itself not in government but rather as an opposition? As an opposition party, there are three attitudinal behaviors that can occur: the first is to just watch from outside what the ruling party is doing. In this scenario, the opposition party becomes a critic of the ruling party and literally criticize every single legislation that is passed. The second scenario is that the opposition party to while away the time as they wait for another election time to come up in 4 years, like in the case of Ghana. The third scenario is for the opposition party to rule side by side with the ruling party. In this case the opposition party is not afraid to put forth pragmatic alternate plans to better the life of the people. It is this stage that I implore an opposition party to be if it truly believes in moving the country forward, and creating a better life for the people. There are two broad strategies I will put forth here- micro and macro strategies. The micro strategy is for the opposition party to hold on to what they have now (seats they occupy). The macro strategy is for them to aggressively rule side by side with the ruling party (proposing alternate policy options). By suggesting that the

opposition party hold on to what they have now, what I meant is that the Ghanaian opposition should take this American political jargon “all politics is local” seriously. The first-past-the-poll electoral system in Ghana is a signal that opposition MPs must deliver their campaign promise. This is irrespective of the challenges that an MP may face. I must emphasize here that the term “party stronghold” will soon be an issue of the past as the Ghanaian electorate become sophisticated (paying attention to political platforms and the consistency such platforms hold). I was in an African country on a research trip. I had the opportunity to talk to MPs in the opposition. Almost all of them lamented at the time that the ruling government is holding on to the development funds meant for the opposition areas, but has however released those development funds for areas that ruling party MPs are coming from. In a recent election, what I hear is that most of these lamenting MPs who blamed their inability to help their constituencies on the ruling government have lost their seats. Apparently, the electorate did not buy that excuse. The question then becomes what should an MP do when the ruling party decides to withhold development funds for an area controlled by an opposition MP? This is where planning comes in, and the mobilization of local resources becomes imperative. Having at the back of your mind that all politics is local, an opposition MP needs to have plan A, B, and sometimes C. An MP needs to understand the electorate that he intends to serve, understand the strengths and weaknesses of the constituency, and work hard to harness the resources of the constituency. There is a reason why we call political agenda a platform. Now, if an MP does not deliver on his/

her campaign platform, obviously the platform collapses and you go with it. Opposition MP should stick with his or her constituency and deliver the platform and more. Remember that in the trouble times, the trust that the constituency has in an MP will be the last line of defense that will make an MP save his/her seat. Irrespective of all the noise an opposition MP makes in parliament, they need to remember where they are coming from. The second strategy for a party in opposition is to aggressively challenge and rule side by side with the ruling party. This is where already established institutions an d ru l es b eco m e a weapon of the opposition. I am not talking about criticizing the ruling party, but putting forth alternative policy and

legislation that moves the country forward, and also could be traced all the way back to the kitchen table at respective homes. For instance, what does the debate on the GDP mean in the bowl of the fisherman or farmer when they sit down to eat with their family at the kitchen table? If they can’t find what is meant by the GDP in their kitchen bowl, you better save your breath and the noise associated with it. I will borrow Kelly Johnson’s principle of KISS “Keep It Simple Stupid” to guide the messaging and strategy. Parties in the opposition have championed very important policies in the advanced world. A party in opposition should not be afraid to propose policy options for fear that the ruling party will steal it and make it its own. When those policies are well drummed in the

media, and stretched all the way to the kitchen table, it will be harder for it to be ignored, much less stolen. The available institution will carry this message far, and will draw the attention of the ruling party to do more. Finally, I cannot imagine a political system without a strong and viable opposition. When the dust is settled, we should remember that it is the people who matter in the all the political battles. D r. F r a n c i s Wi a f e Amoako is an adjunct professor in International Relations and African Studies at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. He is also the Director of the Center for the Sustained Domestic Security and Development (CESDOSED).

Democratic Reform Minister Pierre Poilievre was to offer more reaction at 1 p.m. ET on Parliament Hill. The court made it clear in its ruling that it is merely providing a legal framework for implementing specific changes to the Senate and that is has no opinion as to the merit of the proposals. “The desirability of these changes is not a question for the court; it is an issue for Canadians and their legislatures,” the judges said in a 59-page decision. tary legislative body.” An elected Senate, the court said, would be a rival to the House of Commons and would give “democratic legitimacy to systemically block the House of Commons.”

On the matter of consultative elections for senators, the court said such a move would alter the “architecture” of the constitution of Canada, and would “modify the Senate’s role within our constitutional structure as a complementary legislative body of sober second thought.”

The government has argued the prime minister would retain the ability to ignore senatorial elections.

The federal government had asked if the prime minister, at his discretion, could suggest names to the Governor General chosen from candidates who win provincial elections for a Senate seat.

Senators have already been elected in Alberta, which has legislation mandating elections, and the prime minister has recommended some of them for appointment to the Senate.

But the court said the Constitution requires a lower elected and upper appointed legislative chamber, and that the contract between the two is “not an accident of history.” Executive appointment of senators, rather than election, was deliberately chosen by the framers of the Constitution Act to allow the Senate “to play a specific role of a complemen-

The court had no comment on the legitimacy of the several Alberta senators currently sitting in the upper chamber.

Implementation of VAT on banking services in June The government has postponed the planned implementation of the 17.5 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) levy on some financial services by commercial banks from May to June this year.

The one-month postponement is to allow for enough public education on the services that are exempt and those that are taxable.

But even before the levy takes off, the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB) is demanding that the government publishes the indicative list of the exempt and taxable services by commercial banks.

A Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Cassiel Ato Forson, in an interview, said, “We are looking at June to begin the implementation of this levy.” He was upbeat that enough public education would have been carried

Some commercial banks such as Barclays and Ecobank have circulated text messages informing clients that the policy will take effect from May. The decision to levy a 17.5 per cent levy on financial services rendered by the commercial banks has generated a huge scare among the public, with reported cases of

According to the deputy minister, the government was engaging key stakeholders as part of the awareness creation programme before the final implementation.

“What we had wanted initially was a sixmonth window for the technical committee to submit its report to the minister, to be followed by public education before we finalise the date of implementation.

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaateng, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)

Impact of Criminality on Immigration and Citizenship Applications Persons who submit applications to Citizenship and Immigration – be the applications for citizenship, permanent residence, visitor visas, student permits, work permits or to seek refuge - must be aware that their criminal history could be a principal determinant completing the sentence o f t h e s u c c e s s o f imposed upon you or after t h e i r a p p l i c a t i o n s . committing the offence, if the offence is one that Generally, a person with would, in Canada, be a criminal conviction an indictable offence will not be admitted into punishable by a maximum Canada, not even as a term of imprisonment of visitor. Immigration Regulation 133(1) indicates that a sponsorship application shall only be approved by an officer if, on the day on which the application was filed and from that day until the day a decision is made with respect to the application, there is evidence that the sponsor is not subject to a removal order. Such removals are mostly triggered by criminal offences.Under the “Sponsorship Eligibility Assessment” column of the Immigration Sponsorship form (IMM 1344), the Immigration would like to know if the sponsor is “currently in jail, prison, penitentiary or reformatory” or has been “convicted of a sexual offence or serious violent offence against any anyone, or an offence causing bodily harm against someone who is or was related to you (the

South Korea ferry: Hundreds missing as ship sinks

Domestic ferries across some parts of Asia have a bad safety record, especially in countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia where ships can be overcrowded and poorly maintained. But in recent years South Korea has been one of the exceptions.

safer to stay on board than brave the water. All of these split second evacuation decisions and the design of the ship, will be analysed by investigators. “I would like to say sorry to the passengers, which include a number of students and their parents, and promise that our company will do its best to minimise loss of life. We are sorry,” he said, according to the AP news agency.

This particular ferry was built in Japan, who make some of the best ships in the world. It wasn’t anywhere near full and it was travelling a wellworn route in reasonably calm seas. Many of the passengers were students from a high school in a suburb of Seoul heading off on a four-day field trip to Jeju. Angry parents have gathered at the school in Ansan to demand answers, reports the BBC’s Lucy Williamson in Seoul. Earlier reports put the number of passengers on the ferry at about 350. The vessel is reported to have a capacity of up to 900 people. sponsor), or an attempt to commit such an offence” and also if the sponsor has been ”charged with an offence under an Act of Parliament punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of at least 10 years”. A person who is detained in any penitentiary, jail, reformatory or prison, is not likely to be eligible for sponsorship. Also, persons who are convicted under the Criminal Code of an offence of a sexual nature, or an attempt or a threat to commit such an offence, against any person, as well as persons who commit an offence that results in bodily harm as defined in section 2 of the Criminal Code, to any family members may be barred from sponsoring relatives. It may not matter whether the offence and conviction took place outside Canada or in

Canada. The term “family member” in this context is defined expansively. Seek clarification from an expert.Immigration Regulation 133(2) however indicates that a sponsorship application may not be refused on the basis of a conviction in Canada or outside Canada if a period of five years or more has elapsed since the completion of the sentence imposed and the sponsor has demonstrated that he or she has been rehabilitated, or if a pardon has been granted and has not ceased to have effect or has not been revoked. Also, a permanent resident with a bad criminal record is likely to be ineligible to apply for Canadian citizenship. Applicants are specifically asked if they have been convicted of an indictable offence in the three years preceding submission of the

application. The Registrar of Canadian Citizenship checks with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service to find out if there are any criminal or security reasons which could prevent an applicant from acquiring Canadian citizenship. Criminality in Immigration context is a complex area. Seek professional advice if you reasonably believe criminality could be an issue in your application. James A. Lakeside Estates MD gets Noble Forum Award The Managing Director of Lakeside Estates, Prince-Joseph M.K. Ayiku, has been awarded by the West African Nobles Forum for his high level of integrity and morals in the pursuit of his work.

a non-governmental, non-religious and non-profit making organization with its headquarters in Accra, with a membership of over 1,000. The Forum works to compliment the efforts of the ECOWAS secretariat to make the ECOWAS dream a reality, and has been collaborating with West Africa International magazine to annually honour men and women o f i n t eg ri t y i n t h e s u b - r e g i o n .

Mr. Ayiku was among 29 selected distinguished individuals from both the public and private sector in the West African region who were recognized for “being an eminent West African who upholds the virtues of honesty, integrity and accountability.” The West Africa Nobles Forum, a group of eminent West Africans, is

The organization recognizes men and women of integrity, in the hope that such

honesty will be replicated and emulated by others in the society to enhance the ethical behavior of people in society. Prince-Joseph M.K. Ayiku, the new Noble of West Africa, said a chief responsibility of leadership is to be an example to others, a role model whom others can look up to. He said being a role model has everything to do with character and the foundation of character is integrity. He said all leadership failures in Africa are character failures and urged all to improve on their character, likening it to the foundation of a building; saying “when the foundation of a building is weak, the building will collapse, likewise when the character of a leader is weak, it amounts to a failure”. He thanked the Forum for recognizing his efforts and that of others in the sub-region. Lakeside Estate is a leading pioneer in the real estate industry in Ghana with high success ratings and public appeal. The company is a member of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA) with some awards to its name. Other awardees include Governor Raji Tunder Fashola, Lagos State, Nigeria; Rev. FASHION By Beni Boo Styles

BE YOUR FAB SELF WITH YOUR OWN STYLE AND FASHION There are many misconceptions about fashion these days and I will be shedding lights on a few of them this season: So one of the st 1 ones I would like to discuss with you my fab readers “is that fashion requires money and you can’t be fashionable without a big budget” This misconception I personally blame on lazy fashion writers and bloggers and editors who focus on big brands like

(Gucci Versace Prada just to name a few who are played out but yet can afford them , readily have infos available for them to use and publish and spoon feed them. Now as fashionable savvy shopper or any lady or gents that want to look fab without ...... my advice: Look for local stores, designers for good quality clothes at affordable prices to compliment your wardrobe. Q u i c k

t i p s :

Don’t try to fix your mind on a brand as that will prompt you to spend more money on that particular brand and prevent you from buying clothes that might just fit your style in a deferent store.

Give yourself plenty of time to look around discount stores-- it can take a while but you are sure to find something you love and enjoy the experience. • •

Convince your friends adventure into the discount sale world with you so that you can compare notes on the different places you’ve been and these allow you to shop in stores that you might originally dismiss but carry your style . You can also look at your closet, shop in your closet re -arrange and pair clothes differently and learn the art of basic sewing as it would help you to redesign your clothes without spending so much money on getting new ones or go to the seamstress or tailor or a reputable designer like Beni Boo and let your vision and style come tight. Coupon hunting is always advisable but if you not a big fun like me then let the internet be your best friend. There are numerous website that sell discounted designer wears and just fashionable clothes. But be sure to do your homework, read reviews and make sure they are

reliable ; eg: ebay, Amazon, Lulus. com, beniboo.com, overstock.com ... Note: Buying too much when the price is right isn’t good for you either. D o n ’t b e l i k e y o u r friend who can’t say no and if you are do this little exercise: Always a s k y o u r s e l f “ Wi l l I wear this regularly? To where? Do I really need it?” If you answer no to any of them, you probably shouldn’t buy it. • Don’t buy something which will not be use for long. Even though we do not want eternity in a garment and we are excited about new things that captureS the moment you still want your m o n e y ’s w o r t h . •

Be careful about return policies. Because the clothes are discounted and on sale, they usually can only be returned for store credit or are non-refundable. Don’t hesitate to try stuff on, and be confident in your purchases and about yourself!

BUSINESS Whenever Possible, Avoid Joint Purchases On Credit By: Ken Ntiamoa, MBABIA Insolvency Counsellor

Many years ago, Canadian family units were able to survive on one income, usually from the husband’s side while the other, usually the woman, stayed at home to raise the children. Unfortunately, that lifestyle is long gone. Most families today need income from both husband and wife to survive; and even with that, many don’t survive through the month. Newly-wed couples need, oh! rather, want a new house, a new car, new furniture, a new boat, a new everything to keep up with the Jones’s. And, it’s like they want all of those at the same time. Gone were the days when you could lay away a piece of furniture, pay on account gradually until it is paid off before you take it home. Today, people want everything like yesterday. So, they fall on loans, credit cards and lines of credit to accomplish that. If you have a good credit rating, with decent and

stable income, lending institutions just love to provide you with credit facilities. In addition to credit cards, you can purchase big ticket items like boat, car, cottage or even a house by way of a loan or a line of credit. No one can predict exactly what the future holds in terms employment, health and finances. For a married couple, it would be a smart move for one or the other to purchase items that depreciate in value (like boat, car and appliances) in his or her name. Even, for a big ticket item such as a house, it will not be a bad idea to put the house

in one name only. In the event of default-payment for whatever reason, only one of the spouses would be adversely affected with respect to garnishment of wages and bank accounts; seizure of assets and bad credit rating. The o t h er o n e wo u l d b e spared and his or her good credit rating could come in handy to save the situation. It is a tragedy to have both a husband and wife’s credit rating tarnished simultaneously. Smart businessmen who feel like they are running a risky business with big business loans that could prove hard to pay, buy their houses in their wives’ names only. That way, should his business go caput and he is sued, his home could be spared in case of bankruptcy. A good example is the case of a husband and wife, both with good income and good credit rating who jointly purchased a

brand new car to replace their old car. The car was registered in both names and both were cosigners on the bank loan. When they encountered financial problems, the car was seized by the creditor and sold in a public auction. As a result, there was a deficiency in the amount of $3,500. A Collection agent hounded both husband and wife and their credit rating went down the drain.

Had the husband purchased the car by himself, the wife would have been spared the harassment from collection agents and from ruining her credit rating. To l e a r n f r o m t h e experience of the above couple, avoid a joint purchase on credit whenever possible and especially, on items that

depreciate in value if one of you can qualify without the other. Make a joint purchase only if neither of you can qualify for the credit requirements of a lender alone. Be wise on your credit purchases. Be wise like the ant. Ken Ntiamoa, MBA Mortgage Broker and Insolvency Counsellor LIFELINE FINANCIAL 416 398 1877

TALKING FINANCES By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto The following threepronged action plan, if used properly and regularly, will allow you to achieve your financial g o a l : 1 - Wo r k H a r d , 2-Work Smart and 3-do one and two Consistently. W o r k h a r d What does it mean to work hard? The definition will vary from person to person. One person idea of working hard is a just a warm-up for others. Your unique definition of working hard is to take yourself to a state of discomfort in the activities of choice and maintain that state long enough to achieve the desired objective. Many people are lazy or mentally weak and do not have the will power to work hard. They envision what they would like to have or be and set out to achieve it. Yet they give-up at the first obstacle they encounter, or when they experience discomfort. It should be borne in mind that the by-product of hard work

Secret to Financial Success (Part 1)

is discomfort. The longer you can maintain a state of discomfort, the better your results will be. In long distance running competition, competitors will experience major discomforts when lactic acid builds up in the blood stream. The competitor that can endure the discomfort of the lactic acid the longest has the highest chance of not stopping or slowing down, and most likely will win the race. The capacity to deal with stressful/unreasonable people and not throw in the towel will allow you achieve your life’s objective. Some people are easily frustrated when it comes to dealing with difficult people. They will give up their entitlement just not to deal with the difficult person. We have to accept the fact that of the 7.2 billion in the people in the world, some will be very difficult deal with, while others will be very lovely. We should learn to enjoy

both types as part of life’s experiences. Difficult, unreasonable, bonehead people are sometimes placed in our path to help us discover something about ourselves. Being able to deal with a difficult person is an enhancement of your interpersonal and coping skills. These individuals might also be the road block to your financial target, if you are able to endure the challenge they bring. Wo r k S m a r t Working smart is very important because it prevents injury and allows you to use your talent to achieve the best possible outcome with minimum effort on your part. Whatever your activity, there is always a way to perform your required activities better or efficiently. The only requirement is to task your brain for answers to appropriate questions. Words such as:

Leverage is using a small portion of your money, skills, labour, time, talent and a large portion of someone else’s. Real estate is an example of leveraging. You save a small portion (5%) of the value of the house and borrow 95% of the bank’s money to become an owner. Specifically, a house valued at $300,000, requires the purchaser to only save $15,000 and borrow $285,000 from the bank to leverage themselves as an owner. Employers charge corporations large sums of money and only pay a fraction to the employees that perform the actual task. They have leveraged the employee’s skills, talent, expertise and time to their benefit. Delegation and best use of talent are very important in the concept of working smart. Certain low skill- paying activities are best to delegate to others, unless it give you a sense of fulfilment and/ or enjoyment. the best use of his time, unless it providse a sense of fulfilment. That time on that task would have better been used for rest or perfecting (studying) his craft. The point being made is that if you are worth $100 plus per hour at your profession, don’t waste your talent performing tasks that are beneath your hourly rate, ie: $20 per hour. Rather, pay someone $20 per hour to perform your assignment, while you go and work for $100 per hour at your profession or study/train to see how you can improve your hourly rate beyond what you are currently worth. If you work many overtime hours or have a second or a third job, you will need to implement proper tax planning, if not, you will be working many hours for the government. Some individuals are excited by the fact that they have multiple jobs. One of the main reasons for working is to earn money, which is the amount you

make at year end after all deductions and taxes. Therefore, without proper or smart tax planning you will be earning money just to transfer it to the government. C o n s e q u e n t l y, m o s t of your hard work has been wasted because you were not smart enough to implement proper tax planning. Yo u r m i s s i o n a s a thinking human is to look for ways to be efficient, more effective or productive in all you do. Our capacity to think is what has placed us on top of the food chain and separated us from dwelling with animals in caves. You should use it to achieve whatever target or goal you desire. If financial abundance is your desire, you will be able to achieve it, base on the concept of working hard and smart. In part 2 in next month’s article, the two concepts explained will be joined to the third in demystifying the secret of financial success.

8 Interdicted DVLA officials under investigations

Eight officials of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) who were captured on the Tiger Eye investigative video as being part of a driver ’s licence racketeering network are under investigation. The eight, are currently on interdiction. They are to face a committee of enquiry constituted by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the DVLA, Mr. Rudolph Beckley. The Chairman of the six-member committee of enquiry, Mr. Cheyuo Wienna Musah, told the Daily Graphic that the committee started investigating the affected officials from Thursday. He said if any of the officials were found culpable after the investigations, they would face dismissal and prosecution.

He declined to give the names of the eight officials, but indicated that the names would be released only after the investigations. According to Mr. Musah, the eight officials, all males, are from the Tema, Tamale, Mampong and Kumasi DVLA offices. Meanwhile, the DVLA has contacted security agencies to deal with the middlemen or ‘goro boys’ captured on the tape with the DVLA officials. Actions so far Mr. Musah, who is the Director of the Driver Training, Testing and Licensing Unit, said the DVLA had already

invited the eight officials to view the video. Consequently, he said, the DVLA had issued query letters to the officials to answer why disciplinary actions should not be taken against them.

Mr Musah mentioned the arrest of ‘goro boys’ at the Weija DVLA office near Accra and at the Kumasi DVLA office as some of the actions taken by the authorities of the DVLA since the release of the investigative video. The management of the DVLA has linked up with the security agencies to conduct series of raids at the various DVLA offices. Besides, he said, internal security officials of the DVLA had been tasked to clear all people suspected to be ‘goro boys’ from the DVLA premises. Vi d e o d i s t r i b u t i o n Mr Musah said the DVLA management had printed copies of the video which would be given to all the regional and district managers of the DVLA. He said the video would also be viewed at a DVLA conference in Koforidua from today, April 25 to Sunday, April 27, 2014. Te r m s o f r e f e r e n c e The committee of enquiry is to establish the underhand dealings exhibited by the DVLA officials seen in very compromising positions in the video. It is also to find out the collaboration between the DVLA officials and the ‘goro boys’ in the issuance of fake driver’s licences,

Undercover investigations at the DVLA revealed a licence racketeering network of officials and some deviants who issue licences to unqualified individuals for personal monetary gains. The 12-month investigations saw the undercover team of Tiger Eye visiting some regional offices of the DVLA to establish the breakdown of the system at the DVLA, making it easy for the team to procure licences for mentally and physically challenged persons, market women, expatriates, among other individuals, without going through the usual rigorous process of acquiring a licence. Crackdown on Unpaid Internship Necessary to Protect Young People from Exploitation By Kwabena Akuoko, MSW, RSW,, Toronto

Unpaid internship, businesses’ common, yet controversial practice of offering inexperience young people stints of employment experience without pay has sparked a national debate. The discussion covers a range of issues surrounding the program, but I want to focus on its exploitative nature. Understandably, unpaid internship is advantageous and I do not want to ignore the important fact that it in a way provides pathways for youth who lack employment history to gain the necessary experience to successfully enter the labour market. But nonetheless, the program has far too long been subjected to serious abuses and the only party that immensely benefits from it seems to be employers. Accordingly, many Canadian jurisdictions have decided to take legislative steps to ensure the program’s fairness. Undoubtedly, the crackdown is necessary to protect vulnerable employment deprived young people from exploitation. The notion that unpaid internship is a win-win arrangement between employers and young interns is a hotly contested one. In many respects, the program does not offer the expected employment opportunities to inexperience young job seekers. It is simply a lopsidedly arrangement that benefits businesses more than the young interns. Business organizations in most cases benefit from young people’s labour under the pretext of offering interns hands-on experience. It is against this backdrop that I think the Government of Ontario must be applauded for being the latest Canadian jurisdiction to crackdown on businesses that violate the otherwise well intentioned unpaid internship program. The crackdown is necessary to dissuade those employers who take advantage of young people and exploit them for their labour. After all, the Employment Standards Act clearly stipulates that all workers experienced or not deserve to be compensated for their labour. While there are a lot of abuses associated with the unpaid internship and the crackdown is warranted, it needs to be pointed out that many business organizations, especially those in the non-profit sector genuinely help to prepare inexperienced young people to enter the labour market without exploiting them. Many non-profit businesses have hired young folks through the unpaid internship program. This distinction in my view needs to be recognized so that we do not generally paint all businesses involved in the program with same brush. However, while many non-profit and even some for-profit businesses provide valuable steppingstones, which immensely help young people find their futures jobs,

unpaid internship as a program is profoundly susceptible to abuse. From my standpoint, the program has lately become synonymous to exploitation because what used to be entry level positions paying minimum wage, for young post-secondary graduates are now morphed into unpaid internships. Unlike in the past when employers would take a chance on inexperienced young job applicants by hiring and providing them with desired training for entry level positions with decent remunerations, many employers these days increasingly demand experience for all jobs. And the caviar is that young people who lack experience for these entry level positions are pre-conditionally taken on as interns without any guarantee of being hired even after successful completion of the program. The foregoing analysis provides a perfect example of the misleading and unfairness of the unpaid internship program to young people. According to the Law Commission of Ontario, which has studied the wider negative ramifications of the unpaid internship for instance, the program is widely misused. It particularly exploits inexperienced young workers by clearly taking advantage of their need to gain employment experience before they become employable. In the end, the program does not practically help reduce the higher unemployment rate among the growing number of young workers involved in internships. As I have already alluded to, one important drawback is that the unpaid internship is systematically replacing paid entry level jobs and as a matter of fact, it adds to the increasing level of youth unemployment rate. And it does not help when significant numbers of young people graduate from postsecondary academic and professional programs with large debt loads into stagnated labour market that has little or nothing to offer them, but are somehow forced work for free. In this case, the program only delays young peoples’ entry into the paid labour market. Given that the number of unpaid internship has grown exponentially across Canada in recent years, all those who believe in fairness and the concept of work for wage must openly throw their support behind the crackdown on unpaid internships as spearheaded by Ontario Government. As a matter of fact, the federal government must take a lead role in ensuring that young people’s labour is not exploited in any shape or form because it is estimated that there are approximately 300,000 violations of unpaid internship across Canada every year with about 100,00 in Ontario

Senate reform can’t be done by Ottawa alone

cont'd from pg. 14

profound change that requires the sign-off of most of the provinces “Security of tenure,” the court said “is intended to allow senators to function with independence,” and fixed terms would affect the Senate’s fundamental role and nature. But the court did agree that a senator does not require $4,000 worth of property to remain independent, nor does he or she need to show $4,000 of personal net worth as the rules currently mandate. This is one change Parliament could unilaterally put in place, except in the case of Senate seats in Quebec, where consent would be needed because of a historical constitutional arrangement with that province. High bar for abolition The court found that the Senate plays a crucial role in any constitutional amendment by its ability to delay a change proposed by the House of Commons. The very functioning of the constitutional amending formula would be at stake if the Senate were to disappear, said the court, concluding that all the provinces — not just seven of them — would have to agree with the federal government on a decision

to eliminate the Senate. The consent of the territories is not necessary in any amendment. The court’s decision Friday is not a judgment, but it is a pronouncement on the constitutional validity of the changes the government proposed, and a road map for the role of the provinces and the Senate itself have in any reforms to the upper house. Liberals suggest eviction Liberal MP Stéphane Dion, speaking to reporters in the Supreme Court foyer, said the only realistic plan for Senate reform is for Harper to follow in Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s footsteps and evict his senators from caucus. All Senators would then be more independent and less partisan, Dion said. Harper has said many times that if the Senate can’t be reformed, the government would abolish it, and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair has embraced the longstanding NDP policy of abolition. Asked if he thought Harper or Mulcair would push for a referendum on abolition, Dion replied that all a referendum would achieve is an expression about how people feel about the Senate. The constitution would still have

to be opened up, he said, causing a stampede of provincial premiers lobbying for their own agendas. “The premier of Quebec has been very clear on that, and I’m sure he’s not alone,” Dion said. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard has suggested Quebec should insist on the entrenchment of “distinct society” recognition in a constitutional amendment. Harper had asked the court last fall to advise the government on four questions. The first three questions inquired whether Parliament, on its own, can make changes to senators’ terms, qualifications and method of selection: ?Can senators be appointed for terms of 8, 9 or 10 years, or for the lives of a couple of Parliament sessions? ?Can senators be chosen by consultations with the provinces in the form of provincial elections, as has happened in Alberta? ?Can the archaic requirement of a senator owning at least $4,000 worth of property in his or her province be eliminated? The final question was about the ability to abolish the Senate, a prospect that looks exceedingly unlikely given Friday’s decision from the court. CBC News

Toronto cop charged with murder gets desk job with Crime Stoppers cont'd from pg. 11 “This is not uncommon for suspended officers to be brought back to work,” the union boss told CP24 anchor Lindsey Deluce. McCormack said the internal review included a risk assessment by the service’s professional standards investigative unit. “Ultimately, it’s a command decision,” McCormack said. “It’s done after (professional standards) does a full review and ensures there is no risk to the public or the integrity of the corporation.” The professional standards unit is tasked with investigating criminal allegations against Toronto officers. When a suspension occurs, the union encourages the police service to find “meaningful work” for the officer or officers in question, McCormack added. It is not exactly clear what kind of administrative work Forcillo is doing for

Crime Stoppers at police headquarters on College Street. The charitable organization is overseen by a volunteer board of directors and the police service provides a coordinator to manage its day-to-day operations. P r e l i m i n a r y hearing continues

The recordings were posted online or shared with the media. In a cellphone video recorded by a witness, police officers repeatedly shout at Yatim, who is alone on the streetcar, to “drop the knife” and a male voice is heard taunting the cops.

Meanwhile, Forcillo returned to court Thursday for the third day of a preliminary hearing that will determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed with a seconddegree murder trial. Due to a publication ban, the media is prevented from reporting the evidence that is being presented.

M o m e n t s l a t e r, n i n e gunshots are fired as officers stand on the street near the open front door – three initially and six more about five seconds later.

The charge was laid a few weeks after Yatim was shot multiple times and Tasered by police while he was armed with a knife aboard a TTC streetcar on Dundas Street West, at Bellwoods Avenue, in July 2013.

Less than a month later, the second-degree murder charge was laid against Forcillo after an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

Public outrage followed the incident, which was filmed by cellphone and surveillance cameras.

In the video, it appears the final six shots are fired after Yatim fell to the streetcar’s floor. The sound of a Taser is heard after the gunshots.

He is also facing a disciplinary charge of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act. cp24.com

Transforming Life Center (TLC) giving back to the Community

By Staff Reporter, Toronto

Toronto’s Transforming Life Center (TLC) is doing something dynamic and different; they are giving back to the City of Toronto. Last week, the Center’s Community Outreach Team spent two days delivering jackets and warm clothing to the Covenant House Shelter, Downtown, and also provided food and drinks to the homeless individuals on Jarvis street. These basic necessities to withstand the brutal winters were met with smiles and profuse thanks. The need on Jarvis street was quite overwhelming as a surprising number of people showed up and willingly accepted the provisions made available by the group. This simple act of

kindness and giving embodies the most exciting nature of our human relationships; empathy, compassion, care, and love. Through such outreach, we are often reminded of the things we take for granted and how much more we can contribute to our society. It is the center’s goal that through acts of love and compassion, the community of Toronto and the world at large will become constantly aware of the indescribable and transforming love of God and His son, Jesus Christ. For some of the team members, it was eye-opening to see young individuals with no home and no family support. It was of great relief however, to know that shelters

like Covenant House for youth aged 16-24 are working to fill in those missing roles and gaps. This is just the beginning for this dynamic team, determined to transmit God’s love throughout the whole of Toronto. As on member puts it, “It is a really great feeling to know that we, through our donations, are in some way contributing to the lives of others. We do not take lightly our mandate as the Outreach Team of the Transforming Life Center and as such, we will continue to help those in need and show forth the love of Christ.” This is the exciting mission of TLC’s Community Outreach Team, and they are definitely off to a great start, reaching our beloved City one neighborhood at a time.

Frankly Speaking

Stop the Politicization and Regionalization of Poverty By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

Over the years, successive governments in Ghana have sought to politicize the under-development and the resultant poverty in the Northern Regions of Ghana. It is true that the northern regions of the country were, as the time of independence, relatively less developed in terms of infrastructure, educational and health institutions as a result of the policies of the colonial governments that concentrated the few infrastructures in the southern sector of the country, especially in the coastal areas for administrative convenience of the colonial governments. The post- independence government of Kwame Nkrumah and CPP sought to correct some of the imbalances by instating a fee-free secondary/technical education for residents of the northern regions. This program (which is still in place though) has succeeded in providing higher education to a lot of people from the northern regions of the country. Today, the number of highly-educated people from the northern regions of Ghana, is comparable to the residents of the southern regions. There are equally a lot of northerners who have made it good in the business and political fields. The sad reality which most northerners do not admit is that many of those that move down south and get rich do not go back to contribute to the development of the communities they left. It is common knowledge that voluntary contributions and obligations to assist in the development of their local communities has become an integral part of the lives of most ethnic groups in southern Ghana. It is common to see the citizens of many towns and villages in southern Ghana trooping from the urban centers to their rural towns and

villages (home towns) during Christmas, New Year and Festival times to engage in all kinds of fund-raising activities to embark on community development projects. It is possible that some northerners who have become rich and influential may be contributing to the development of some of their communities in the north, but this may be a few exceptions. Instead we are constantly bombarded with claims of abject poverty and under-development of the three northern regions. In response, successive governments in Ghana have embarked on various programs to address the so-called poverty gap and developmental imbalance between the south and north of the country. Despite these claims of poverty and under-development, we have constantly witnessed frequent outbreak of internecine violence among various ethnic groups in the north since independence. And whenever violence breaks out, the first thing they do is to burn their

houses. Governments will then respond with emergency aid: blankets, food and the construction of new houses for the affected communities. Contingents of military and police personnel will also be posted there to keep the peace. Has anyone calculated the huge cost of permanently keeping soldiers and police officers on guard in these communities to prevent the outbreak of trouble? The money involved in these emergency supplies, building new houses and paying for the peace keepers could be used for the development that the people crave for. The situation has become so widespread that it seems some people in those regions engage in these actions deliberately to prompt the usual political responses from governments. The so-called under-development and presumed poverty of the northern regions featured very prominently in the last elections in Ghana in 2008. Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP promised to introduce a Northern Development Fund to address the so-called under-development and poverty of the north. They did not win the elections to implement their promise. The Mahama NDC government took that idea and turned it to what they called Savannah Accelerated

Development Authority (SADA). The Authority was tasked to help tackle the “development gap between the north and south. Huge sums of public money were pumped to the organization to achieve its set objectives. The organization (SADA) was chaired and manned by only people from the Northern extraction. However reports surfacing in Ghana over the past three years have been, to say the least, sickening. SADA has become a major disappointment, not only to the people of the north, but the entire nation. It has failed woefully in an attempt to execute its mandate. They have initiated wrong projects that they knew will definitely not work for the area but in the process the huge sums of public money that were pumped into the organization have been misappropriated by a few people with powerful connections to the ruling government.

Some of these useless projects included the rearing of guinea fowls, and an afforestation program which could not survive the hot weather. The people who initiated these projects definitely knew that they were not viable but they went ahead anyway. What moral right and authority then do people from the north have in complaining again about poverty and underdevelopment? I submit that I am totally against the idea of the regionalization of poverty and development. Ghana is a unitary state and hence we need a common development program. We should be honest enough to admit that under-development cuts across the entire country and not only the north. Embarking on partisan and panic developmental projects with the aim of pacifying one sector of the country should not be part of our national development agenda. The money that has been pumped for

the execution of SADA projects is from the Ghanaian taxpayer and thus whatever happens must be of national concern. Poverty has no regional name. It is a universal phenomenon. And in Ghana poverty cuts across the entire nation. It is ironic to see how the rest of the country has adopted an apathetic attitude to all the rot now been unearthed about this SADA fiasco. The rest of the country thinks it is a northern problem forgetting that the money that went into this rot is national money. We need developmental programs that will unite us as a nation of one people, not those that will further divide us and tear us apart and in some cases pit one sector of the country against another. These types of programming are short-sighted, parochial and politically-mischievous policies that should be abandoned if we are to forge ahead together as a nation.

South Korea ferry: Hundreds missing as ship sinks

Almost 300 people remain unaccounted for after a ferry carrying 459 people capsized and sank off South Korea.

The ferry, carrying mainly school students, was travelling from the port of Incheon, in the northwest, to the southern resort island of Jeju. South Korean TV networks are constantly replaying dramatic footage of the rescue efforts before the ferry sinks. It shows an armada

of small boats motoring right up beside the ferry, which listed heavily on its side before sinking.

is the fact that among those on board were high school students on a trip to a holiday island.

Rescuers are seen desperately grabbing teenagers out of the water before they are swept away by the currents and undertow. Other footage shows helicopters throwing orange life rafts to passengers bobbing on the sea. Some of the passengers are then winched to safety.

Relatives and friends of those on board are posting on social media sites asking for any news or information about loved ones.

What makes this accident even more distressing

On Facebook many South Koreans are reposting a yellow ribbon to symbolise the hope that the missing may still be found alive. “Please, please survive

and come back,” the message reads. “We love you guys.” Emergency teams are using floodlights and flares to search the stricken vessel through the night. Those rescued have been taken to a nearby island. Four people are now said to have died and dozens of others have been hurt.

Images showed the ferry listing at a severe angle and then later almost completely submerged, with only a small part of its hull visible. It sank within two hours of sending a distress signal, reports said.

South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error.

Reports suggest some of those rescued were picked up by nearby commercial vessels. The US Navy has sent an amphibious assault ship, the USS Bonhomme Richard, to assist with the search, officials say.

Community Concerns Parenting Behaviors That Cripples Children from Growing

Parental Issues, What type of Parent Are You? By Golda Abena Quayson

In these series we will discuss different types of families as a whole, as part of parenting issues. As we all know kids are kids, simply by virtue of their age and their stage of human development, but parents are parents only in relation to their children. Considering families, families are also minicultures and they share a common language, attitudes and behaviour. We are kids or parents within the context of a family, and what kind of family it is, makes all the difference in the world to how we parent and how kids grow up. But we can learn a lot about parenting by looking at family as a whole, as an entity in itself. Just as individuals have their own nature, histories, and personality structures, so do families. These tend to be acted in each generation, and these passes along and poses challenges to our parenting skills. There are three basic kinds of functioning families that all of us belong to: The Brick-Wall Family, The Jellyfish Family and The Backbone Family. Let’s talk about the Brick-wall family and parenting styles. In the brick-wall family the building blocks, the bricks are cemented together to make the family obsess with order, control, and obedience, rigid adherence to rules, and strict hierarchy of power. In this atmosphere kids are controlled, manipulated, and made to mind. The children’s feelings are ignored, ridiculed, or negated. Parent’s turns to direct, supervise, minilecture, order, threaten, remind and worry over everything the kids do. The brick-wall family is in essence a dictatorship, perhaps a benevolent one but a dictatorship nevertheless. Power in a brick-wall family equals control, and it all comes from the top or the head of the family. Now let’s observe the Jellyfish family or parenting and how they

run their household and bring kids up to adulthood. In this household, children growing up in an atmosphere in which love and care are lacking or given inconsistency and enter into adulthood with no sense of responsibility and security. It is the extreme opposite of Brick-Wall Family is the Jellyfish family, one that lacks a firm structure and, like the brick wall, stifles the healthy display of feelings and emotions, albeit in different ways. Parents allow the children to do whatever they want, because he/she was denied that privilege when he/she was younger or as a child. Parents are frightened of repeating the abuse or behaviour they knew, and doesn’t know what to replace it with. There is no structure at the critical points of a family’s dayto-day life. Some typical remarks from Jellyfish parents are that “If she needs money, I want her to have it. I don’t ever want her to have to worry the way I had to about money”. These children slide or swim through life into adulthood with little or no external and internal structures. Since they receive no affirming life messages from their parents, they view themselves and the world around them with lack of optimism. The idle one if all things being possible is the Backbone Family or parenting. This parenting challenge is to have the ability to act through love, to be non-violent, to be patient, and to respect the child’s rights. As parents we can provide our children with stability and flexibility and the opportunity to thrive by creating an emotional, physical, and moral

structure in our homes. Backbone children learn that they can say no, that they can listen and be listened to, and that they can be respectful and be respected. Children of Backbone families are taught empathy and love for themselves and others. The Backbone family/parents provide the consistency, firmness, and fairness as well as the calm and the peaceful structure needed for children to flesh their own sense of true self. Rather than being subjected to power expressed as control and growing up to control others by exhibiting it in a violent way to hurt others and themselves. Backbone children are empowered and grow up to pass what they have learned of the potential of the human spirit on to others and respect life. Being a Backbone parent isn’t easy. There are no quick fixes, no sure answers, just lots of opportunities to grow. If you aren’t already one, becoming a Backbone parent is even more difficult. If you identified yourself in the Brick-wall or Jellyfish family system or a patchwork of all the three, remember that you cannot change overnight. You might need help and support to make the changes that will be necessary. You might be able to find that help in a supportive neighbour, friend, or mentor. Sometimes a professional in the field can help you make sense of where you been, where you are going, and what you can do to get there. At the same time don’t overlook one of your best resources: your own children. They live with you and they know what you’re capable of doing. Do not hesitate to get these free feedbacks. It is true that children tend to grow in a healthy, functional way if they have parents who are growing in a healthy, functional way, and it is also true that parents can gain wisdom from the children. It’s never too late, let’s keep trying.

Doris Osei Bonsu, Crisis Counselor, Toronto

motivation nor unconditional love. 4. We don’t share our past mistakes

As a counselor I have witnessed a wide array of both functional and dysfunctional parenting behaviors. As a parent myself, I have learned that all the wisdom and love in the world doesn’t necessarily protect you from parenting in ways that hold your children back from gaining independence and becoming the leaders they have the potential to be. I was intrigued, to read about the works of a leadership expert Dr. Tim Elmore and learn more about how we as parents are failing our children today — coddling and crippling them — and keeping them from becoming leaders they are destined to be.

Healthy teens are going to want to spread their wings and they’ll need to try things on their own. We as adults must let them, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help them navigate these waters. Share with them the relevant mistakes you made when you were their age in a way that helps them learn to make good choices. Also, kids must prepare to encounter slip-ups and face the consequences of their decisions. Share how you felt when you faced a similar experience, what drove your actions, and the resulting lessons learned.

Tim had this to share about the several damaging parenting behaviors that keep children from becoming leaders – of their own lives and of the world’s enterprises:

As parents, it is our responsibility to model the life we want our children to live. We should help them to lead a life of character and become dependable and accountable for their words and actions. As the leaders of our homes, we can start by only speaking honest words. Show your kids what it means to give selflessly and joyfully by volunteering for a service project or with a community group.

1. We don’t let our children experience risk We live in a world that warns us of dangers at every turn. The “safety first” preoccupation enforces our fear of losing our kids, so we do everything we can to protect them. It’s our job after all, but we have insulated them from healthy risk-taking behavior and this has adverse effects. Psychologists have discovered that if a child doesn’t play outside and is never allowed to experience a skinned knee, they frequently have phobias as adults. Kids need to fall a few times to learn it’s normal. If parents remove risks from children’s lives, we will likely experience high arrogance and low self-esteem in our growing leaders. 2 . We r e s c u e t o o q u i c k l y Today’s generation of young people has not developed some of the life skills kids did 30 years ago because adults swoop in and take care of problems for them. When we rescue too quickly and over-indulge our children with “assistance,” we remove the need for them to navigate hardships and solve problems on their own. It’s parenting for the short-term and it sorely misses the point of leadership—to equip our young people to do it without help. Sooner or later, kids get used to someone rescuing them: “If I fail or fall short, an adult will smooth things over and remove any consequences for my misconduct.” When in reality, this isn’t even remotely close to how the world works, and therefore it disables our kids from becoming competent adults. 3. We let guilt get in the way of leading well Your child does not have to love you every minute. Your kids will get over the disappointment, but they won’t get over the effects of being spoiled. So tell them “no” or “not now,” and let them fight for what they really value and need. As parents, we tend to give them what they want when rewarding our children, especially with multiple kids. When one does well in something, we feel it’s unfair to praise and reward that one and not the other. This is unrealistic and misses an opportunity to enforce the point to our kids that success is dependent upon our own actions and good deeds. Be careful not to teach them a good grade is rewarded by a trip to the mall. If your relationship is based on material rewards, kids will experience neither intrinsic

5. We don’t practice what we preach

Why do parents engage in these behaviors? what are we afraid of? Do these behaviors come from fear or from poor understanding of what strong parenting is? It seems like both fear and lack of understanding play a role here, but it leads with the fact that each generation of parents is usually compensating for something the previous generation did. The primary adults in kids’ lives today have focused on now rather than later. It’s about their happiness today not their readiness for. Many parents today had Moms and Dads who were all about getting ready for tomorrow: saving money, not spending it, and getting ready for retirement. The truth is, parents who are able to focus on tomorrow, not just today, produce better results. How can parents move away from these negative behaviors? It is important for parents to be selfaware of their words and actions when interacting with their children, or with others when their children are nearby. What we need to do to them is to train them and coach them not only caressing them. H e r e ’ s

1. Talk over the issues you wish you would’ve known about adulthood. 2. Allow them to attempt things that stretch them and even let them fail. 3. Discuss future consequences if they fail to master certain disciplines. 4. Aid them in matching their strengths to real-world problems. 5. Furnish projects that require patience, so they learn to delay gratification. 6. Teach them that life is about choices and trade-offs; they can’t do everything. 7. Initiate (or simulate) adult tasks like paying bills or making business deals. 8 . I n tr o d u c e th em to p o ten tia l mentors from your network. 9. Help them envision a fulfilling future, and then discuss the steps to get there. 10. Celebrate progress they make toward autonomy and responsibility. In conclusion, always ask yourself this question: In parenting my children, am I sacrificing their longterm growth for short-term comfort?

In Africa, fruit bats, particularly species of the genera Hypsignathus monstrosus, Epomops franqueti and Myonycteris torquata, are considered possible

natural hosts for Ebola virus. As a result, the geographic distribution of Ebolaviruses may overlap with the range of the fruit bats.

Prevention and control

No animal vaccine against RESTV is available. Routine cleaning and disinfection of pig or monkey farms (with sodium hypochlorite or other detergents) should be effective in inactivating the virus. If an outbreak is suspected, the premises

should be quarantined immediately. Culling of infected animals, with close supervision of burial or incineration of carcasses, may be necessary to reduce the risk of animal-tohuman transmission. Restricting or banning the movement of animals from infected farms to other areas can reduce the spread of the disease. As RESTV outbreaks in pigs and monkeys have preceded human infections, the establishment of an active animal health surveillance system to detect new cases is essential in cont'd on pg. 60

South Korea ferry: Hundreds missing as ship sinks for those unaccounted for, officials said, but the work was challenging. “There is so much mud in the sea water and the visibility is very low,” said Lee Gyeong-og, vice-minister of security and public administration. One body, of a female crew member, had been recovered from the ship, the coastguard said. It seems that there are many students who could not get out as the passage was blocked by water.” It is not yet clear what caused the incident, but witnesses described hearing an impact, before the ship listed and quickly sank. One passenger told the Y TN news channel: “ We h e a r d a b i g thumping sound and the boat stopped.” Rescued passengers are brought to land in Jindo after a South Korean ferry

carrying 476 passengers and crew sank on its way to Jeju island on 16 April 2014 Teams have brought rescued passengers to shore - at least 13 are reported to be hurt Maritime police search for missing passenger as lighting flares are released for a night search on 16 April 2014. Survivor: “There was an announcement telling us to sit still, but the ferry was already sinking” South Korean President Park Geun-hye has expressed sadness over the incident, saying it was “truly tragic” that students on a field trip were involved in “such an unfortunate accident”. K i m Yo u n g - b o o n g , an official from the company which owns the ferry, has apologised. Domestic ferries across some parts of Asia have a bad safety record, especially in countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia where

ships can be overcrowded and poorly maintained. But in recent years South Korea has been one of the exceptions. This particular ferry was built in Japan, who make some of the best ships in the world. It wasn’t anywhere near full and it was travelling a wellworn route in reasonably calm seas. The speed with which it flipped over and sank is a major concern. Passengers described a loud thud, which might suggest it hit something hard. It doesn’t matter how well built the ship is, collisions can sink vessels very quickly. Survivors have also complained that they were told to stay put even though the ferry was tipping over. That’s not as surprising as you might think. The basic assumption is always that the ship is the best lifeboat. That it’s normally safer to stay on board than brave the water. All of these split second evacuation decisions and the design of the ship, will be analysed by investigators. “I would like to say sorry to the passengers, which include a number of students and their parents, and promise that our company will do its best to minimise loss of life. We are sorry,” he said, according to the AP news agency. Ferry - named Sewol - was travelling from Incheon to Jeju Island, a route it serves twice a week

Ebola patients should be avoided. Gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment should be worn when taking care of ill patients at home. Regular hand washing is required after visiting patients in hospital, as well as after taking care of patients at home. * Communities affected by Ebola should inform the population about the nature of the disease and about outbreak containment measures, including burial of the dead. People who have died from Ebola should be promptly and safely buried. Controlling infection in health-care settings Human-to-human transmission of the Ebola virus is primarily associated with direct or indirect contact with blood and body fluids. Transmission to healthcare workers has been reported when appropriate infection control measures have not been observed. Health-care workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus should apply, in addition to standard precautions, other infection control measures to avoid any exposure to the patient’s blood and body fluids and direct unprotected contact with the possibly contaminated environment. When in close contact (within 1 metre) of patients with EBV, health-care workers should wear face protection (a face shield or a medical mask and goggles), a clean, nonsterile long-sleeved gown, and gloves (sterile gloves for some procedures). Laboratory workers are also at risk. Samples taken from suspected human and animal Ebola cases for diagnosis should be handled by trained staff and processed in suitably equipped laboratories. Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo Living and coping with separation or divorce

I don’t believe that anyone under the sun entertains the desire from childhood to marry one day and be separated or get divorced. In recent times a few adults with contorted view of family life or bitterness from past hurtful experiences, decide to cohabit with another person without any real commitment for marriage. Some are plain afraid of the responsibilities involved in decent family life. Such (usually frustrated or disillusioned) individuals enter into their relationships with a “contract minded mentality” rather than a “covenant minded mentality”. Even then, people still hope to hang on tenaciously to their invented loose association, so far as it works for them.

In summary, GOD NEVER DESIGNED DIVORCE AND SEPARATION TO BE PART OF HIS DIVINE PLANS FOR MANKIND. NOBODY REALLY HAS A DIVORCE OR SEPARATION AS PART OF HIS OR HER FUTURE DREAMS. IT IS USUALLY UNEXPECTED ---- BY THE COUPLE, PARENTS, FAMILY MEMBERS, CHURCH MEMBERS, FRIENDS, AND ALL. Only a heartless and senseless enemy will be “praying for it, expecting it, and rejoice over it when it occurs”. Any severance of a love relationship is like amputation of a hand! But, should the wounded hand bleed forever? Then all the blood in other areas of the body will be lost, and the inevitable will occur ---- death of the whole person. There should be calculated, wise, God-centered ef-

forts to get healing, for life to continue. Whether separated, or divorced, the persons involved must critically and sincerely analyze the root causes of all conflicts, and particularly admit the part each played in creating the problems. They must genuinely repent, make restitution where necessary (including humble apologies), and use the experience to develop Godliness that will enable them to bear fruit in all future relationships with family members and friends. Other steps that could hasten the healing process are: 1) Decide not to take any path of vengeance. Embark upon the path of forgiveness, and ask the Lord to help you do so from your heart. “Beloved do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12: 19). “Do not say ‘I will recompense evil’; Wait for the Lord, and He will save you” (Proverbs 20: 22). 2) Control your emotions and your tongue. It is better to talk more to God than people about

issues. Do the best you can to avoid polluting the minds of family members and friends, especially your children, with reminders about the wrong doings of your mate. The more you talk about your woes, the more you enlarge your wounds and open them up to higher levels of infection. You may damage the children for life. Try to overcome the temptation to campaign and get all the children and every support only for yourself. You may find yourself as a slanderer before God, and incur His displeasure. In the multitude of words, sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise” (Proverbs 10: 19). 3) Tell yourself and others the truth about every matter involved in the situation. If you put all the blame on the other person, you will deepen your bitterness and slow down your healing process. “You shall not circulate a false report” (Exodus 23: 1). “Buy the truth, and do not sell it” (Proverbs 23: 23). 4) Open up fully to the Spirit of Jesus Christ to fill and control your life. This should be after genuine repentance of all known sins as already stated, and asking God to forgive all unconscious sins as well. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us” (1 John 1: 9, 10). 5) Settle down to seri-

MAGS MECHANICAL

ous prayer, especially on personal level. Participate in corporate prayer as well. Get one or two trusted friends to pray along with you as special prayer partners. “Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55: 22). 6) Get into active personal Bible study. That will deepen your desire to pray, and open your eyes to see clearly as well, as to what really went wrong, and where God is leading you next. Meditation on God’s word will heal and bless you as you obey what He teaches you. “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119: 130). “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions” (Psalm 107: 20). “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word. Unless Your word has been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. Trouble and anguish have overtaken me, yet Your commandments are my delight” (Psalm 119: 67, 92, 143). 7) Rely on God alone to help you forget past hurts and pain, and move forward into a fruitful future. After Joseph was sold by his own brothers and he entrusted his whole life into God’s Hands in faith and holy living, God turned his affliction into blessing, and he said: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house”. “For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.” (Genesis 41: 51, 52). “Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares

for you” (1 Peter 5: 7). 8) Be honest and fair with any payments, sharing, or distribution of money and property. “Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight” (Proverbs 11: 1). 9) Be an active church member. Participate in fervent worship and be involved in church programs ---- prayer meetings, Bible studies, evangelism etc. Get into active service and develop a ministry according to your talents and gifts. All these, especially the connections with other spiritual brethren through close fellowship, will speed up your healing. They will also enable you to have a clear vision of God’s will for your life, and encourage you to work towards your goals and objectives. “Let us consider how to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together” (Hebrews 10: 24, 25). We recognize, understand, and sympathize with the various complexities involved with different situations for different individuals under varieties of circumstances. There should be caseby-case thorough examination of all the facts involved with a particular situation, bearing in mind that the fundamental principles of God cannot be altered in any way to suit any person. The best way to stay out of all forms of marital troubles is to wait upon the Lord in prayer, Bible study, daily obedience to God’s word, and holy living, until He settles you with the right person in marriage for true worship

and effective service. No marriage is problemfree, but they will be normal problems resulting from the fallen nature of man, which God has purposed to use for the building of godly character in His children. We must hold on firmly to our faith in God and trust in His faithfulness, because His direction goes along with his provision. By Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo. FOOD FOR LIFE

Bringing the Gospel to our Community By: Rev. Joseph Osei-Amoah BECAUSE I LIVE YOU WILL ALSO LIVE! “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. (John 14:19 NKJV) Christians all over the world have just ended the celebration of the crucifixion and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Powerful and edifying messages have been preached by various ministers of the gospel during the Easter festivities, we still need to feed on the word of God. The Lord Jesus quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 said: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4NKJV) After His triumphal entry into Jerusalem as the long expected Messiah (John 12:12-15), His disciples expected Him to present Himself as Messiah ready to be installed as such and immediately inaugurate the perfect kingdom of God. To their disappointment, the Lord Jesus began telling His disciples of His impending death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead; that was the worst news they had received. Peter took the Lord aside and sternly rebuked Him for speaking of His death by crucifixion; a form of execution designed by the Romans for the worst of criminals and Peter could not imagine the Messiah going through such a

humiliating and painful death. Unfortunately he did not consider the wonderful part of the Lord’s story; the promise of His bodily resurrection on the third day. The Lord responded by rebuking Satan of his last attempt to discourage Him from dying on the cross as the Perfect sacrifice for the atonement for the sins of humanity by speaking though Peter (Matthew 16:21-23). Years later under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul wrote: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Cor. 1:18 NKJV) It was not only Peter and the other disciples who did not expect the Messiah to die. The Jewish leaders of Jesus’ time also could not associate the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the suffering Servant of God in Isaiah 53 with the Messiah. The terrible suffering of the Servant of God predicted by Isaiah revealed how terrible sin is to our holy

God and how determined He was to deal with it ruthlessly in order to reconcile humanity to Himself. In His agonizing prayer at the garden of Gethsemane, the Lord Jesus pleaded with His Father if there was a way to avoid the cross, but in the same breath answered His own prayer; “nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26: 39 NKJV). Dealing with sin was so costly that only the truly human and truly God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity, the Great I AM (John 8:58), qualified to offer Himself as the sacrificial Lamb to atone for the sins of humanity making it possible for whoever believes in Him to be pardoned. The Easter story could not be complete without the physical resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead on the third day as He promised: “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” (John 10:17-18 NKJV) Earlier in John 2: 19-22 the Lord challenged His opponents: “19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days

I will raise it up.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.” Though His body was abused beyond recognition, on the third day, the Son of God came out of the tomb as He promised. He was first seen by Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18); and the evening of the same day, the Lord appeared to the disciples (John 20: 19-23). Eight days later He appeared to the eleven disciples including Thomas who was not present when the Lord earlier revealed Himself to ten; and rebuked Thomas for doubting His resurrection (John 20: 24-29). Years later, Saul

the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” (1 Cor. 15:20-22NKJV) The title “Because I live you will also live”, becomes yours if you by faith accept the message of salvation, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Eph. 2:8NKJV) To receive Jesus as your Savior, follow this instruction: “9 For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.” (Romans 10:9-10 NLT).

Ghanaians celebrate Easter with church services in GTA

cont'd from pg. 1 the Lord is truly risen”. He added that the significance of the resurrection means a change of our old ways and to concentrate on things above. He was assisted in the celebration of Mass by Father Alex Osei and Deacon Joseph Owusu Afriyie.

From the pulpit at the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church, Toronto, Rev. Raymond Baach Abekah preached on living the resurrected life. Easter, he said, means victory to all nations, the opening of heaven’s gate to all believers as well as the provision of faith of the Christian church, he emphasized. He also added that living the resurrected life means trusting Jesus, being peaceful, eschewing wickedness, repentance and forgiveness and be filled with the Holy Spirit. At the International Pentecostal Ministry Fellowship of Toronto, Rev. Dr. Joseph Antoh in his sermon emphasized that the resurrection of Jesus proved that he conquered death and sin. He also used his ultimate authority when He gave the great commission, but showed his unlimited power by promising to be with his followers forever. His resurrection gave us new life, he added. In preaching to the faithful on Easter Sunday at the Ghana Calvary Methodist United Church in Toronto, Rt. Rev. DeGraft Seimie-Obiri stated that Easter is a day of victory, great joy and appreciation to God as Jesus rose from death to ensure our salvation. Rev. George Bempah of Christian Foundation, Toronto in his message preached that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is also in us. It can quicken our mortal bodies by his spirit that dwells in us. “Arise and shine” was Apostle C.K. Manu’s message for the North American joint Easter Convention of the Apostles’ Continuation International Church. He used biblical characters like Abraham and Gideon to encourage members on how and what to do in order to arise and shine in their Christian life. Pastors Solomon Awuah and Arhin of Manhattan

and Montreal Assemblies respectively also preached at the convention. At Christ Redeemer Church, Apostle Kwame Bediako of Redeemer Ministries New York guest speaker based his sermon on why Christ came taken from Rev. 5:1-14. When God wanted to redeem us there was one worthy to do it and Jesus Christ the Lamb of God was the only one. To achieve our redemption, he came down and died for us. Bishop Bob Tacky of Impact Lives Church, Toronto spoke on despising the shame and ascension power during the Easter miracle service. He declared that Jesus Christ endured the cross and despised the shame for the joy that was set before Him, and added that the cross was not Jesus’ destination by rather a transition to the throne of God.

Rev. Raymond Baah Abekah

Rev. Dr. Harry Insaidoo, former Assistant General Superintendent, Assemblies of God, Ghana was the guest speaker at the joint Easter Convention of the Greater Toronto Assemblies of God Churches. He delivered his message on the theme “the resurrected Christ empowers His church through love and unity.” He added that if we want to rise up to a level beyond what we want to be, then we have to follow God’s principles, one – which is the level of forgiveness and love. At All Nations Full Gospel Church Toronto, Senior Pastor Dr. Samuel Donkor ministered a profound message entitled “Your God is Not Dead, He’s Alive!” at its annual Resurrection Sunday Celebration Service In this message new creation realities were discovered in the depths of the true purpose of Jesus Christ’s death on the cross. Jesus Christ a man of perfect standing, untainted and sinless in every sense of the word, died as retribution for our sins but fittingly, also died for every other aspect of our lives. Every brutal lash he took on our behalf, skin torn and bloody, his body weak and frail was to break the curse of sickness and poverty that befell humanity since Adam’s downfall, he added.

The Ghanaian News April 2014

Around the Ghana Sports Scene Clottey makes minced meat of Mundine Anthony Mundine’s career is in great doubt following the toughest fight of his 25bout career in Newcastle on Monday night.

Mundine’s first knockdown came in the third round when he was caught with a straight right. He went down twice in round six and again in round eight and round 10 but got back up on each occasion to see out the fight. “I got caught early and didn’t recover the way I wanted to,” Mundine said. “My defence wasn’t tight enough but I finished the fight on my feet.” Clottey stepped into the ring having suffered just four defeats in his 37 bout career. All four were to world champions - Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Maragarilo a n d C a r l o s B a l d o m i r.

Black Stars sign $100,000 deal with Cheki Ghana The Ghana Football Association and Cheki Ghana Limited have signed a two-year agreement to sponsor the Black Stars ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The Man was floored five times by a dominant Joshua Clottey during a one-sided fight but showed enormous courage to get back on his feet and go the distance. Mundine refused to speculate on his future immediately after the fight. “I don’t want to think about that now,” he said. “I want to take some time off and relax. Who knows?”

with Jonathan Annobil

And while he had fought only twice since he went the distance with Pacquiao in 2010, there was no sign of any rustiness. Right from the opening bell, Clottey was the aggressor and Mundine had no answer to the Ghanaian’s rock solid defence. Mundine’s usual crisp jab rarely found its mark and he was scurrying for cover as Clottey came at him with big lefts to the body and over-head rights.which found their mark. Mundine, on the other hand, rarely pierced his opponents defence. It wasn’t until the later rounds that Mundine, in an all or nothing bid for a knockout, e v e n t r o u b l e d C l o t t e y. It’s was no surprise Clottey goes by the nickname “The Hitter”.

Right from the outset, his punches had far more venom. Not surprising, Clottey was a unanimous point’s winner with the three judges calling the fight 116-108, 115-109 and 117-108. In the main supporting bout last night, former Australian Commonwealth games gold medallist Brad “Hollywood” Pitt suffered his first professional defeat – a brutal fourth round knockout at the hands of Team Mundine prodigy Dave Aloua. Aloua floored Pitt with a sickening blow to the head but the referee surprisingly allowed the fight to continue after Pitt struggled to his feet. Seconds later, it was all over. The Telegraph Sports

The online car selling and buying firm signed the agreement worth $100,000 at a ceremony held at the G h a n a FA h e a d q u a r t e r s i n A c c r a o n T h u r s d a y. Country Director of Cheki, Eric Amoako Twum says the opportunity to associate with a powerful brand like the Black Stars was too much of an attraction to ignore. “The Black Stars is the passion of the nation and we wanted to be part of something that truly binds the nation like the Black Stars,” he said at the event. “We are looking to grow our brand and for us, the B l ack S t a r s p r o v i d e s u s with the most powerful support needed to do this.”

Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi who signed the agreement on behalf of the Ghana FA says the new sponsorship deal will help further enhance the finances needed to guarantee the continued success of the Black Stars. “What this sponsorship does is that it makes the kitty for the Black Stars bigger so that we are able to offer better bonuses to the players and also employ competent staff,” he said. “Money plays a very key role in the success of any organization, especially football and we are happy with this new sponsorship agreement.” Ghana will be making a third successive appearance at the World Cup this June in Brazil. The Black Stars look to go at least one better than their quarter final feat achieved in the last finals four years ago in South Africa. Citifmonline.com

Ghana FA dismisses reports of Black stars Ghanaian youngster Divine Narh squad leakage on trials at Manchester City The Ghana football Association has dismissed reports in the media that Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah has submitted his provisional 30 man squad for the tournament in Brazil.

Ghanaian youngster D i v i n e Ya s s a m b a N a r h has started training with English giants Manchester C i t y, G H A N A s o c c e r n e t . com can exclusively reveal.

According to the reports, there are no major surprises in the squad except for the inclusion of former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong and defender Jeffrey Schlupp who plays for English side Leicester City.

The 17-year-old becomes the latest product from Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy to have a stint with the Sky Blues. Narh was voted the best player of the Right to Dream Academy in 2013.

The rest remains unchanged as all the players that were called up for Ghana’s last World Cup qualifier against Egypt have all been included.

The midfielder popularly known as ‘Mallam’ is part of the current Ghana U20 squad that will begin their African Cup qualifier next month. Narh met up with compatriot Dominic

Oduro at Manchester City as he looks to also impress to earn a permanent stay with the English giants.

But Ghana FA President, Kwasi Nyantakyi, who

doubles as the Black Stars management committee head, in an interview with Joy sports stated that the provisional squad is not out and all reports suggesting the inclusion and exclusion of certain players should not be taken serious because it is just a hoax. “ We h a v e a m e e t i n g o n May 12 and that is the day we will release the squad, so any suggestion now is premature and speculative in nature,” he told Joy sports “We will do 30 and that is what we have agreed, so the coach will bring a 30-man-squad to us and it will be reduced to 23 as required by FIFA on the due date.” Myjoyonline.com

“Choose Health to Enjoy Full Life”-Dr. Bonsu

cont'd from pg. 1

of Apostle Paul of Bible times. That, Paul who was formerly known as Saul was reconciled to God on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians by Jesus Christ so he changed to become a messenger of Christ!

He therefore admonished Christians who are nurses to tell their patients that Jesus is the greatest physician; and those who are teachers to tell their students that Jesus is the truth.

The speaker stressed the fact that though we come to Christ through different ways, our Christian responsibility, like Paul, is to share the good news of the gospel (including healthy life styles) with others. “Paul was to minister to the gentiles and he did it well! All Christians filled by the Holy Spirit ‘have the Word, and share the Word!”, Dr. Bonsu pointed out.

Earlier during the day, Linda Oduro and Elder Kwesi Boateng who are members of the church health team took turns to educate the congregation about menopause in women. They outlined some of the symptoms which include; mood swings, fatigues, depression, hot flashes, reduction of libido, bloating and vaginal dryness among others. They pleaded with men to understand their wives during such hormonal changes in women. A symposium and fruits exhibition was held in the afternoon to promote healthy lifestyles. To God be the glory.
