LIFE GUARD OBSERVATORY Project: Light-weight structure design //

Design of a life-guard shelter Tutor: Dimitris Loukopoulos In collaboration with: Dimitris Sagonas, Vassiliki Karagianni The object of this course is the design on a scale of 1/20 of an observatory for lifeguards in order to be placed on the beach of Anavissos, near the city of Athens. The construction should meet all the operational requirements of an observatory without hindering the swimmers. Furthermore, it is of crucial importance that this construction should be easily assembled on site, as well as that it should leave no irreversible traces in case of removal from the beach. During designing, emphasis should be laid on the simplicity of construction and the use of common materials such as metal and wood. Constructions should be supported by a theoretical concept which defines the connection approach of materials. The materials used in this project were prefabricated wooden elements with metal connections. The intention of the design was a construction that would enable the lifeguards to retain the full control of the coastal area, without losing the sight of the swimmers, not even while descending from the observatory. Therefore, the staircase was placed in the front of the construction.

THE SHELTER ADJUSTS TO THE SUN

The sun and light composed an important parameter of the synthesis, as the observatory should protect the lifeguards from the sun. Thus, a flexible roof construction was designed, which could alter the quantity of the sun getting into the observatory. Through a simple mechanism, the inclination of the roof alters according to the current position of the sun.
