It is a small village designed to function as a lab and showcase for innovative energy technology. The concept is about a sustainable, lively and entrepreneurial green village made out entirely from reused shipping containers. According to it, 20 to 40 recycled sea containers will be turned into attractive working areas, meeting places, restaurants and labs. Students and researchers of TU Delft are working in close alliance with businesses in the construction of a sustainable sea container village on campus. The initiative is the brainchild of professor of Future Energy Systems and renewable energy entrepreneur Ad van Wijk.

EXPERIMENTAL ENERGY SYSTEMS The Green Village will not be connected to electricity and water supplies, the sewage and cable system. It will make use of innovative, experimental, energy systems developed by businesses, students and researchers. The electricity will come from solar panels, wind turbines and fuel cells. Drinking water will be produced from rainwater. Waste water will be reused and processed to create biogas and the village will have a direct current (DC) network to prevent energy loss. LED lighting in walls, buildings and products will provide lighting, and signalling at the same time.

ALLIANCES WITH BUSINESSES The Green Village will be a temporary lab designed particularly for use by businesses. They can buy a container or hire one as a workplace, showroom or facility to test their energy technology, product or service in a practical situation. They can also take advantage of the presence of researchers and students from TU Delft.

Students are also considering intelligent windows that act as sun blinds, LED lighting and TVs simultaneously, the use of materials that enable the walls to store energy and a cable-free lift.

A VILL AGE AS A L AB AND SHOWCASE FOR INNOVATIVE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY The Green Village is be a lively, green and visible area where scientists and students meet entrepreneurs, innovators, companies, artists, teachers and you. An area with amazing possibilities, technologies, products and systems that will contribute to a green environment. An area where you will meet likeminded people either in the restaurant or lunch room, at exhibitions, in workshops or at events. You can walk around and be informed about what is going on. There are working places where you plug in and be connected to the world as well as areas where you can work together with scientists

and companies on the technologies and systems of the future. An area where open source data are available for everyone, where you can follow open courses and where there is an open environment for innovation. The Green Village at the TU Delft, in the economic heart of the Netherlands is an ideal place to bring together leading scientists and innovative companies. You can go to the store to make your own products, apps and design your own systems. Finally, you can even become a member of the Green Village community; become a real Green Villager. MASTER PLAN The master plan of the village is split into five different function zones: housing, hotel, public, machinery and offices. Those five sectors are connected to each other by two squares, the central one and a more private one. Three routes connect the village’s entrance points with the university, which allows the maximum flexibility of expansion of the village in all directions. The two squares serve different needs of the village. The central public square is placed between the public and office sectors, which

house meeting rooms and offices that can be rented and used by energy and technology companies. The second square, the more private one serves the needs of the housing and hotel sectors. This square will be mainly used by TU Delft students or visitors which will need to be accomodated at the campus. According to the different functions needed in the Green Village, four different types of containers are developed and further researched in terms of plan layout.
