PEOPLE MATTERS LEEDS HEALTH & WELLBEING PROJECT

People Matters is a charity based in Holbeck. They support autistic and learning disabled adults from all over the city through variou projects. Their outreach service also provides 1:1 support. The champion inclusion and believe that all activities should be accessible for their members. The Health & Wellbeing Project was set up to tackle the isolation and health inequalities faced by autistic and learning disabled people These were even more noticeable after the pandemic.

People Matter’s approached us with 2 great ideas for community chest pots, to help support people to move more One of these were used to purchase sports equipment to use out and about in the community Their football group and several of our social groups have enjoyed using these as well Two of the social groups have had picnics and played rounders and football at local parks. The Health & Wellbeing groups have enjoyed football and basketball at Holbeck Moor Park.

The other community chest pot will be used to purchase gym bags, kagools and water bottles This way either rain or shine, the group can get out for walks! They also used some of the funding towards some t shirts printed with their new logo. Some members proudly wore these when they defended their title as the holders of the Leeds Learning Disability Week annual football tournament. They beat the opposition so are still the reigning champions!

Training Opportunities

LEEDS ATHLETIC- SEACROFT

Leeds Athletic U9's are the extended family to Leeds Athletic football club Recently new chairperson David Zubrzycki welcomed the team with open arms, it was clear that their ethos’s aligned as they simply want to provide opportunities to football to local children in the LS14 area of Leeds Get Set Leeds Local supported the club by funding a community chest pot, to pay for training for one of their coaches to complete their level 1 football coaching qualification. The club shared that Joe who has completed the course is new to the club and it is great to see all the young people and parents supporting him.

Leeds Athletic U9’s is always looking for volunteers and at times this can be challenging, however they were delighted to attract Callum, an ex local footballer, who has become a great asset to the coaching team.

The Team asked Callum why do you coach?

“I coach partly because my son, Leo plays Secondly, I believe in giving back to the community, I get a great deal of gratitude by volunteering and working alongside like minded people ”

The support the team have received from parents is phenomenal as they have stood by them as they raised from the ashes.

"Igetagreatdealof gratitudeby volunteeringand workingalongsidelikemindedpeople.”

PLAY SUFFICIENCY- ACTIVE LEEDS

Get Set Leeds Local understand that children's play can positively impact how active they are, therefore set out to find out more about children's play opportunities in local neighbourhoods in Leeds We funded a partnership with play experts Ludicology to mentor us, to complete a full Play Sufficiency Assessment Along with working with Ludicology we created a implementation team with local partners including: wider staff in the Active Leeds team, Fall Into Place and Leeds Beckett and began to explore! Play Sufficiency involves exploring the time, space and attitudes needed for children’s play to flourish. We have spent over 50 hours listening to children who have shared their experiences of play, helping us gain an in depth understanding of what it is like to be a child in Leeds when it comes to play! Alongside this we have carried out online surveys with primary and secondary school students and parents of children in target areas. With over 900 responses sharing their satisfaction for opportunities for play in the city

We look forward to sharing the insight in various means soon! In the meantime follow us on Twitter @PlaySufficiencyLeeds for updates

HENRY- ACTIVE LEEDS

Get Set Leeds Local and Positive Futures teamed up to deliver an 8 week HENRY programme to parents at Castleton Primary in New Wortley area of Leeds. But rather than just focusing on the 2 hour workshop sessions we added a twist and included a 1 hour practical family session This was a great way to get the whole family moving more together and to build positive relationships

The team delivered fun inclusive games that helped build confidence, resilience and team work. As a result parents discussed attending their local leisure centre gym together. In addition to the benefits of the practical sessions, the HENRY workshops had really positive impacts on parents attending They felt more equipped to communicate with their children and even made healthy lifestyle choices to their own lives One parent shared that she drinks a minimum of 2L a day of fizzy pop and doesn’t drink anything else. By the end of the programme she had changed her sugary drink to water which is a HUGE achievement!

As a team we were able to build positive relationships with parents and children at the school, moving forward we are hoping to continue work with the established group to co produce a family boxing session at the school.

TOGETHER FOR SPORT- KIT DONATION

Together for Sport want to open the world of sport by unlocking second hand sport kit and equipment and getting it shared around the city.

Using a similar model to the successful Leeds School Uniform Exchange which now has over 270 exchange opportunities across Leeds, covering more than 90% of all schools, they want to tap into the generosity of the people of Leeds, share resources, reduce waste and make sure everyone has access to all the health and social benefits that come with being active

Together for Sport are aiming to raise awareness of the need for donated kit, not only does it help those who may be struggling financially but it also has a positive impact on the planet by reducing waste Alongside raising awareness Together for Sport are encouraging clubs and teams to share amongst their members and with each other so that kit is circulated from where there may be a surplus to where it's most needed

Together for Sport have worked with Active Leeds and Leeds United to run a donation campaign across the city for specific items that they will distribute during the school holidays this summer. Some Leeds City Council Leisure Centre’s have held donation drop off points for members of the public to kindly donate much needed items from football boots, trainers, leggings, shorts and hoodies!

Together for Sport will be attending Breeze events over the summer handing out kit to those in need

Armley Wed 17th August

Harehills Tues 2nd August

Rothwell Mon 8th August

We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Together for Sport, Leeds United, the Active Leeds team and all who have made donations!

ACTIVE THROUGH FOOTBALL LEEDS UNITED FOUNDATION

Get Set Leeds Local have supported Leeds United Foundation through the process of obtaining funding from the Football Foundation to launch Active Through Football. We connected community leaders into the project via a consortium approach which provided great insight to the needs/wants of football across the city. Active Through Football is a fantastic opportunity for you to have your say and get active the way you want to. A shared love of football is bringing communities in Leeds together and making a real difference to people’s lives. No matter your skill level, the aim is to get people moving, so even if you have never kicked a ball or scored a goal before, there will be something for everybody The project is based in Burmantofts, Richmond Hill, Hunslet, Beeston & Holbeck and is for participants ages 16+ both male and female who are looking to get more active and join fun sessions in their communities while also having there say on what type of activities they require.

The project is based in Burmantofts, Richmond Hill, Hunslet, Beeston & Holbeck and is for participants ages 16+ both male and female who are looking to get more active and join fun sessions in their communities while also having there say on what type of activities they require. The Active Through Football project is a community led project for 5 years funded by the Football Foundation aimed at giving communities opportunities to come forward and create a difference through football. Active Through Football now has 20 groups running across these areas working with different groups from different backgrounds and ethnicities. ATF recently hosted the Refugee World Cup with the Bridge Eritrean community coming out as winners of the tournament

There were over 20 teams on the day all enjoying a day of football and free food and drink throughout the day Working in Cross Flatts Beeston we have also been working with a group of 16 21 year olds through Good Deeds Leeds Within this group we are looking to progress the group and individuals through identifying young adults to start coaching and refereeing and to gain qualifications within the sport they are enjoying and volunteering in

Following a successful community cycle hub pilot at Cross Flatts Park, the Active Leeds team identified funding to scale up and replicate this project across four areas in the Inner East The overall aim of these projects it to increase cycling opportunities, access to bikes and develop safe spaces to ride. Over the past twelve months the team have worked closely with local schools, third sectors and other council departments to find safe and accessible locations to house the hubs

Over the past twelve months the team have worked closely with local schools, third sectors and other council departments to find safe and accessible locations to house the hubs. Each hub accommodates adult bikes, junior bikes and balance bikes which can be booked out and borrowed for free by trusted groups, organisations, and partners There is support available for local groups, residents, and volunteers to access existing sessions at the hubs or to start up their own.

Training is available for those local people who want to upskill themselves in either leading cycling sessions or learning more about the mechanics of bikes and how to fix and maintain them

CROSS FLATTS- SWIM, BIKE & RUN

Fiona from British Triathlon has recently delivered a programme that focuses on the outcomes of Swim, Bike and Run on people with diagnosed and self diagnosed depression, OCD and anxiety.

Cycle sessions took place at Cross Flatts Park across 16 weeks, engaging a group of women who were prominently South Asian Some had never been on a bike, by the end of the project, they were able to ride around the park, up and down the hills. Prior to this some had struggled to walk around the park let alone ride around it At the end of the project Fiona noted a great increase fitness, self esteem from learning a new skill, positivity. Bonds and friendships were also made

@GetLeeds

Cross Flatts was the perfect location for them, it has a bike hub (funded by Get Set Leeds Local), tennis courts and a MUGA, and the café was invaluable when open for a post session catch up and the toilet
