Where to begin?

That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). See map on page 64-65.

By: Dorien ter Veld

CITY OF AMSTERDAM

OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here.

You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life.

JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sightseeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do.

9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, bou tiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes.

LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

Dutch Design

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Mart Visser, Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Monique Collignon and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Edwin Oudshoorn, Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdam-based fashion houses. city Diamonds Personal service, high quality products, unbeatable prices and extraordinary skills; at City Diamonds, on the Kalverstraat 51, the lover of diamonds, jewels and high quality watches, will find exactly what their heart desires. Amsterdam has a reputation of being a diamond city for over 400 years already. The Amsterdam-based diamond merchant family devoted itself to cutting and later trading diamonds since the 19th century. Current owner Robert Reuter created a breath-taking jewel in downtown Amsterdam, with his City Diamonds. Whoever is looking for exclusivity, workmanship and quality, has found it right here. Customers from within The Netherlands or from abroad, including celebrities and royalty, find their way to City Diamonds without much effort.

AMSTERDAM: CITY OF CULTURE FINE ART & ANTIQUES Amsterdam offers a diverse array of world-class entertainment, as for centuries has been one of the leading centres of culture in Europe. High-quality culture spread across 65 theatres and concert halls, 42 museums and over 140 galleries. The multitude of theatres, galleries, museums and concert venues put Amsterdam at the very heart of arts and culture in the Netherlands. EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS (SEE ALSO PAGE 38) Exhibitions and cultural events are being organised in the various towns and villages in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England that are of importance for the life and work of the artist. For the first time, museums like Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and institutions that actively contribute to conserving Van Gogh’s heritage are working together on a large scale. The Kröller-Müller Museum is a second home to Vincent van Gogh. The museum boasts almost 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings, making it the second largest collection of Van Goghs in the world. In addition, the Museum is home to top works by modern masters including Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan.

The principal collection of the world’s beloved painter at the Van Gogh Museum and a rich division of the Russian Hermitage Museum are also not to be missed, even if you are in the Dutch capital for a brief visit.

MUSEUMS Throughout the centuries, the Dutch gave the world most famous painters as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, who until today provoke our admiration. This tradition continued in the 20th Century with Mondrian and later with the Cobra group abstract artists. Amsterdam art museums have not only unparalleled collection of the most famous, but also many lesser known amazing Dutch masters of all epochs.

ART/ANTIQUES STORES Spiegelkwartier: Nieuwe Spiegelstraat runs between the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Keizersgracht, its history goes back as far as the 17th century. In and around this street with its many characteristic Amsterdam facades more than 70 art and antique dealers have set up business. These specialists offer a wide range of objects, ranging from Egyptian antiquities which are 6,000 years old to seventeenth-century Delft ware, from antique Chinese porcelain to abstract modern art. You name it, it is for sale in the Spiegelkwartier. This makes the Spiegelkwartier a must-see quarter for those with an eye for the unique, rare and beautiful. ›

The State Museum called in Dutch Rijksmuseum, and a wonderful collection of modern art from Europe and America at The City Museum called in Dutch Stedelijk Museum are a must to visit.

ART GALLERIES Even if you’re not planning to expand your personal art collection, a visit to one of Amsterdam’s many art galleries is a great way to spend an afternoon. Discover what’s new in the Dutch and international art scene! At the corner of Weteringschans and Spiegelgracht you will see the well-known Diamond House Lazare Diamonds on the right in the Museum Plaza building; on the lefthand corner there is Reflex Modern Art Gallery which sells contemporary art.

SPIEGELKWARTIER the art & antique district

If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area has been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. HISTORY Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighbourhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. ARTS & ANTIQUES (MINI MUSEUMS) In a cluster of historic houses, you can find a rich treasure-trove of art and antiques,mini-museums that invite you not only to admire, but give you the opportunity to buy. The shops and galleries of the Spiegelkwartier offer some of the finest art and antiques you’re likely to find anywhere in the world, from Roman glass to Dutch Old Masters, from Delftware to tribal art, contemporary sculpture to Art Deco jewellery, centuries-old furniture to a painting finished yesterday. The Spiegelkwartier has been at the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for more than a hundred years. Over 70 specialised dealers offer not only top-quality collections, but considerable expertise. And they gladly share there expertise with you. RIJKSMUSEUM According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware.

This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS TO SOUVENIRS The Art and Antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from medieval statues and antique clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. And you don’t have to break the plastic, also for little money you can buy an unique ‘souvenir’. FOOD & DRINKS & SHOPPING Tucked in between these Aladdin’s caves are cafés and restaurants perfect for a little time out, whether you feel like a bowl of healthy soup, or coffee and cake; a light lunch or dinner with singing staff. You can pick up nifty vintage clothes at knock-down prices, or pre-loved designer wear. Then there are shoes and bags from famed Dutch designers and gifts aplently, from stylish Dutch contemporary object to toys for the kids back home. FIRST EVER VISIT TO AMSTERDAM Soft rock band Air Supply

performs in The Netherlands Their biggest hit in The Netherlands is ‘All out of Love’. Soft rock band Air Supply performs on the 8th and 9th of December in the RAI theater in Amsterdam. Despite the fact they are popular all over the world, Air Supply never before came to The Netherlands. For their first ever visit they created a special concert with all major hits. Sing along with “Lost in Love”, “All Out of Love”, “The One That You Love”, “Sweet Dreams”, and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”.

Leadsingers Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. “Lost in Love” was their first big success and became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. The second single was “All Out of Love,” and that went up the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the

Hermitage Amsterdam’s new exhibition, Classic Beauties, will be opened at June 16. The show tells how artists and tourists flocked to Italy, and more especially Rome, in the second half of the 18th century. From all over Europe they travelled to the Eternal City in search of inspiration and to see the newly excavated classical Greco-Roman sculptures and buildings. Their experiences prompted a new and austere kind of fashionable architecture and, in the visual arts, an unprecedentedly sensual style that sent shock waves through society: a naked, superhuman beauty more daring than anything attempted by the Greeks and Romans. Neoclassicism was born.

Amsterdam Art Weekend returns to the city every November offering art enthusiasts the chance to delve into Amsterdam’s vibrant contemporary art scene. It is focused on placing up-and-coming artists firmly in the limelight, allowing art lovers to discover (and get their hands on) work by talented artists fresh on the scene. The event typically sees more than 30 galleries in the city organise special exhibitions, performances and lectures. For the complete list of participants and opening hours, visit the Amsterdam Art Weekend website...

This biographical exhibition presents a wealth of objects thousands of years old alongside a number of contemporary artworks. The ancient works of art recount the life of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha. Born a wealthy prince in the fifth century BC, he chose at the age if 29 to renounce his royal lifestyle and devote himself to spiritual development. The various phases in his life - birth, renunciation, enlightenment, discourses and death - are the wellspring of Buddhism and shape the narrative of this exhibition. .

Enjoy art of lasting beauty and affordable quality at PAN Amsterdam, taking place at Amsterdam RAI each November. Since it was established in 1987, this annual art fair has garnered a reputation for its friendly atmosphere and opportunities to meet the best art dealers, as well as looking at and comparing the works of art that appeal to you and learning about them without any obligation. Over 45,000 art lovers celebrate PAN Amsterdam, and for good reason: you can meet the dealers of some 125 galleries and see thousands of objects (paintings, antiques, modern and contemporary art, jewellery, photographs and furniture.). HAARLEM CITY OF CULTURE A city of remarkable history and culture, Haarlem is just a short hop from Amsterdam but packs a unique punch. With spectacular monuments dating back almost 800 years, such as the Sint-Bavokerk, it’s no wonder that so many great artists of the Golden Age wanted to capture its beauty and atmosphere. HAARLEM SHINES BRIGHT! This autumn there are even more cultural experiences than usual to enjoy in Haarlem. With two theatres both celebrating anniversaries plus fantastic, unmissable exhibitions. Visit Teylers Museum for a unique exhibition of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, and Frans Hals Museum to discover works of art by artists such as Manet and Van Gogh. Haarlem artists and performers are pulling out all the stops with an events calendar packed with great entertainment and art experiences! FRANS HALS AND THE MODERNS, A MEGA EXHIBITION This autumn, the Frans Hals Museum is hosting a high-profile exhibition of exceptional quality. For most of the 18th and 19th century, Frans Hals was considered an unruly drunk whose paintings were of little value. This all

52 - CINQ

changed some 150 years ago when Hals was rediscovered. Painters such as Manet, Ensor, Courbet and Van Gogh admired Frans Hals and revered him as a modern idol. With around 50 paintings on loan from museums from all over the world, this exhibition shows the huge impact Hals had on these modern painters. This is the first time his paintings will be displayed alongside pieces directly influenced by his work, clearly revealing Hals’s progressiveness. UNIQUE: LEONARDO DA VINCI AT TEYLERS MUSEUM With works on loan from the collections of the Queen of England, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Louvre in Paris and the Uffizi in Florence, Teylers Museum is hosting an impressive exhibition you simply must see! The exhibition at Teylers Museum is the start of a year-long celebration of this great artist’s

life and work with a whole range of events being organised worldwide. There is a specific time slot during which you can visit this exhibition. Tickets can only be bought online. Combination tickets, combining a visit to Teylers Museum with Frans Hals Museum at a cheaper admission price, can be bought at franshals-leonardodavinci.nl. WWW.VISITHAARLEM.COM. ■

Beauty of the Battle

In CODA Museum Apeldoorn

We have a natural aversion to violence, strife and hatred. Yet there is beauty to be found in battle and combat, for instance when they are incorporated in a dance performance or depicted in a painting. In Beauty of the Battle, CODA Museum Apeldoorn confronts its visitors with this apparent contradiction. Commissioned by CODA director Carin Reinders, guest curator Wim van der Beek selected works by 22 artists for this exhibition, which explores the boundaries of hate and love, danger and beauty. Beauty of the Battle is an impressive presentation that connects painting, sculpture, video art, performance art, installations and dance. The exhibition is staged in CODA Museum Apeldoorn from 30 September 2018 to 3 February 2019 inclusive. CODA MUSEUM SEPTEMBER 30TH 2018 TILL FEBRUARY 3RD 2019 WWW.CODA-APELDOORN.NL/BOTB

RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

JORDAAN The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. REMBRANDTPLEIN Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. UTRECHTSESTRAAT AREA This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. LEIDSEPLEIN Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

DINNER | CLUBS Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood. ■

Roberto’s Restaurant celebrates 25 years of pure Italian cuisine.

The two Michelin star restaurant is seated on the first floor. Moshik translates his emotions and inspiration, gained at his journeys around the world, into culinary creations. Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.

Ron Blaauw returns to basics here, creating cuisine that is pure and prepared with quality ingredients. This urban gastro-bar combines a hip, lively ambience with top class cuisine without the frills. It also means little formality but original, delicious food and sensational flavours. Phenomenal value for money, which is also reflected in the wine list.

At &moshik you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’.

It’s all about the experience at this restaurant, delicious food. Main courses start at €15 – not bad for a restaurant that is awarded with a Michelin star.

Roberto’s philosophy is simple: truly Italian in every sense of the word. To start with, it means feeling responsible for preserving the culinary heritage and traditional dishes of the Italian cucina. Under the direction of executive chef Franz Conde all typical classic Italian dishes are prepared with great enthusiasm. Franz’s vision on cooking and passion for pure Italian products give him plenty of inspiration. The philosophy of the general manager and vision of the executive chef were combined in the cookbook ‘Pure Italian Cuisine’.

In its existence it has been the highest national and international awarded Dutch bar, ever. The team of Door 74 is the most awarded in the country on a personal level, with several world championship winners working behind the bar. The atmosphere is relaxed and we do not serve food. Hope to see you at Door 74.” PIANOBAR MAXIM Leidsekruisstraat 33, www.pianobarmaxim.com The Maxim Pianobar has the laid-back vibe of a piano bar in a place like New Orleans (or at least that’s how we imagine it to feel). While it’s true there are smarter venues in the city, shinier, chicer places, this one has its own lowley energy, a sense of heart. Inside it’s a deep red boudoir sort of space, draped in velvet. There are thick burgundy curtains and lots of dark wooden furniture and – of course – there’s a piano, where every day of the week live music is played. Open: Sun. - Thu. 21:00 - 03:00. Fri. 17:00 - 04:00, Sat. 21:00 - 04:00.

AMSTERDAMMERTJES

THROUGH THE CANALS

An Amsterdammertje is the typical red brown steel bollard that is used to separate the sidewalk from the street in Amsterdam.

Of course the canals are one of the major attractions of the ‘Venice of the North’. By daytime already very charming, by night they become even more enchanting because many of the canal houses and bridges are beautifully illuminated. You can sample the canal views by taking a canal tour with Blue Boat at the Stadhouderskade. We offer audio commentary in 21 languages. Our boats also give you an unique vantage point for taking the best photographs of the city! For reservations, see blueboat.nl or call +31 20 679 1370.

TIME

DRIVING A CAR IN AMSTERDAM Amsterdam’s historic centre wasn’t built for the modern means of transportation and as a result it has become quite congested over the years. Driving in Amsterdam is not recommended.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Amsterdam can best be travelled by public transport. Parking is not only a problem, but also rather expensive. Public transport is well-organised and you can either take a tram, bus, metro or taxi. For information about travelling in the Netherlands, call +31 900 9292 or check 9292.nl/en.

TAXIS In the Netherlands it is not customary to hail a taxi. To take a taxi you go to a taxi rank, of which there are many. In your hotel, restaurants, shops, etc. you can ask to order you a taxi, or you can call +31 20 777 7777. Taxis are of good quality, but relatively expensive.

ELECTRICITY The voltage in the Netherlands is 230 volts.

CANAL BIKES If you care to venture into the canals on your own or if you’re feeling energetic, you can also try the more adventurous pedal boats. You can set off from one landing stage and leave your Canal Bike at another. Drift through the canals in your own time, you cannot fail to discover the most surprising things. Call +31 20 626 5574 for more information. ■
