250 years of magic

ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages,

WELCOME TO THE GREATEST SPECTACLE ON THE PLANET!

The Worldchristmascircus or ‘Wereldkerstcircus’ in Dutch has brought happiness to literally millions of people from all around the world in its 34 year history. The history of their winter venue, the Royal Theatre Carré here in Amsterdam, is equally impressive: over 130 years this has been the ultimate circus venue in Europe. The Worldchristmascircus is world-renowned for its elaborate costumes, the incredible historical setting and the extremely high quality of the acts. Only the winners of the most prestigious prizes in the performance world are welcome in the arena. This year however, they are going even more overboard for the ultimate circus celebration: 250 years of circus!.

In 1768 the English major Philip Astley gave the very first circus performance with his military horses. Little did he know that this would pave the way for an artform that is now cherished all around this planet. The Worldchristmascircus will bring an ode to this visionary major this year with the death-defying Hungarian Post. A dangerous, spectacular and rarely performed act that was known in Astley’s day by the name ‘The Courier from St. Petersburg’. The performance will be led by the highly regarded Freddy Knie, two-time Golden Clown winner in Monte Carlo and owner of the Swiss Circus Knie. Other crown jewels of this years line-up include the Nomuna acrobatic group from Mongolia who will present the tallest diving board stunts ever performed, Mooky from Canada who is the first female clown to grace the arena of Carré, Li Wei from China who will dance on a slack wire, Maycol Erani with his breathtaking Dutch

Friesian horses and the most admired female Cossack in the entire world: Violeta Aleksandrova-Serzh from Russia! She is the most talented family member from one of the oldest circus dynasties in the world. For over 200 years her family has been performing around the globe. Now for the first time ever she will perform, as a tribute to Philip Astley, a completely new acrobatics routine ON HORSEBACK! However, this is only a small portion of this years Christmas program. Over 100 artists and crewmembers make this year’s line-up truly unforgettable. They will not only amaze every visitor but all acts will also leave a deep emotional impression on all spectators. So ladies and gentlemen: Clear the arena, let the orchestra play and let the show begin! Book tickets via www.carre.nl or call 0900/25 25 255 (€0.45 P.M.)

Memorable Moments at

PALAZZO

A night out at PALAZZO Amsterdam will take you onto a totally unexpected 3,5-hour journey with dinner + show, where you just sit, enjoy and wonder. PALAZZO is finally back in Amsterdam. Until the 3rd of March you can visit the show in the famous Spiegeltent opposite the Johan Cruijff ArenA and spoil your senses. Text: Connie Fluhme

As a guest of PALAZZO you will witness a world premiere: Haute Cuisine goes together with Haute Couture, Haute Acrobatics and Haute Comedy, or, as the show is called: ‘Haut Chaos’. An extraordinary performance, full of contrasts and extravagant, pleasantly disturbed characters. And while you are enjoying the show, your senses will be stimulated by the delicious 4-course menu composed by the up-and-coming star chef Joris Bijdendijk. That’s what makes an evening in PALAZZO so special: you see and feel the theatre and you experience the food. Your host is the eccentric, noisy, weird and incredibly humorous Reuben Kaye. The energetic Australian takes the Palazzo audience in an intelligent, funny and obnoxious, but also intimate way through the chaos of the evening. From London to Sydney the press is full of praise for Kaye.

“A new comeby star has been born with the grand Reuben Kaye” (The Times UK) But Reuben didn’t come alone - he came with an entourage of amazing artists: The Canadian Marjorie Nantel is an artistic multi-talent that conquers everyone’s heart. She is trained as an acrobat, dancer and clown and performs as an aerial acrobat and contortionist.

An artist who always presents at the highest level. Nonchalant, skilled and with a wink, the duo Flip’n Fly knows how to make the PALAZZO audience’s hearts beat faster. They perform on the teeterboard, show acrobatic figures and breath-taking tricks without a safety net. Sociologist Peter Shub is an award-winning clown, comedian, author and director. From funny pantomime acts to black humour, slapstick and crazy interpretations of poems or songs, this American really can make people laugh! Suzanne and Peter of ‘Up and Over it’ both started their career at Riverdance and present a unique comic percussion act in which they dissect the folk and re-shape it in a surprising way. Sarah Tessier and Guilheme Cauchois became known when touring with Cirque du Soleil’s show ‘Totem’. Their fascinating, passionate trapeze act tells the story of the bittersweet farewell between two lovers. For many, the absolute highlight of the evening. The Russian Nata Galkina poetically shows her ‘feet’ skills by cleverly balancing the rings and hoops during her poetic foot-juggling act. And all of that is supported with live music by the PALAZZO band.

“For many the highlight of the winter” - Het Parool

In the evening, when it darkens, and hundreds of candles light up inside the tent, the PALAZZO Spiegeltent unfolds a very special, intimate charm. Equipped with noble materials such as brocade and silk, the imposing art nouveau interior of the tent makes the visitor enter a world long past, but at the highest contemporary standards. Warm and cosy - a little gem. Welcome to the world of PALAZZO.

Where to begin?

That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). See map on page 64-65.

By: Dorien ter Veld

CITY OF AMSTERDAM

OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here.

You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life.

JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sightseeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do.

9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, bou tiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes.

LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

Dutch Design

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Mart Visser, Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Monique Collignon and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Edwin Oudshoorn, Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdam-based fashion houses. Current owner Robert Reuter created a breath-taking jewel in downtown Amsterdam, with his City Diamonds. Whoever is looking for exclusivity, workmanship and quality, has found it right here. AMSTERDAM: CITY OF CULTURE FINE ART & ANTIQUES Amsterdam offers a diverse array of world-class entertainment, as for centuries has been one of the leading centres of culture in Europe. High-quality culture spread across 65 theatres and concert halls, 42 museums and over 140 galleries. The multitude of theatres, galleries, museums and concert venues put Amsterdam at the very heart of arts and culture in the Netherlands. EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS (SEE ALSO PAGE 38) Exhibitions and cultural events are being organised in the various towns and villages in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England that are of importance for the life and work of the artist. For the first time, museums like Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and institutions that actively contribute to conserving Van Gogh’s heritage are working together on a large scale. The Kröller-Müller Museum is a second home to Vincent van Gogh. The museum boasts almost 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings, making it the second largest collection of Van Goghs in the world. In addition, the Museum is home to top works by modern masters including Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan.

The principal collection of the world’s beloved painter at the Van Gogh Museum and a rich division of the Russian Hermitage Museum are also not to be missed, even if you are in the Dutch capital for a brief visit.

MUSEUMS Throughout the centuries, the Dutch gave the world most famous painters as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, who until today provoke our admiration. This tradition continued in the 20th Century with Mondrian and later with the Cobra group abstract artists. Amsterdam art museums have not only unparalleled collection of the most famous, but also many lesser known amazing Dutch masters of all epochs.

ART/ANTIQUES STORES Spiegelkwartier: Nieuwe Spiegelstraat runs between the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Keizersgracht, its history goes back as far as the 17th century. In and around this street with its many characteristic Amsterdam facades more than 70 art and antique dealers have set up business. These specialists offer a wide range of objects, ranging from Egyptian antiquities which are 6,000 years old to seventeenth-century Delft ware, from antique Chinese porcelain to abstract modern art. You name it, it is for sale in the Spiegelkwartier. This makes the Spiegelkwartier a must-see quarter for those with an eye for the unique, rare and beautiful. ›

The State Museum called in Dutch Rijksmuseum, and a wonderful collection of modern art from Europe and America at The City Museum called in Dutch Stedelijk Museum are a must to visit.

ART GALLERIES Even if you’re not planning to expand your personal art collection, a visit to one of Amsterdam’s many art galleries is a great way to spend an afternoon. Discover what’s new in the Dutch and international art scene! At the corner of Weteringschans and Spiegelgracht you will see the well-known Diamond House Lazare Diamonds on the right in the Museum Plaza building; on the lefthand corner there is Reflex Modern Art Gallery which sells contemporary art.

REMBRANDT &

the Dutch Golden Age 2019 Rembrandt van Rijn is one of Hollandís most beloved artists, a prolific and innovative master painter, printmaker and draughtsman. Generally considered as one of the worldís great artists, Rembrandt was working at a time of significant wealth and wisdom in the 17th century, an era known as the Dutch Golden Age. In 2019, it will be 350 years since he died and his life and heritage will be celebrated with exhibitions throughout Holland, from Middelburg to Leeuwarden. REMBRANDTS MASTERFUL TOUCH IN THE SPOTLIGHT Born in Leiden in 1606, Rembrandt spent his formative years training in the art of painting. In 1624 he set up his own studio before moving to Amsterdam in 1631, a period covered in the ëYoung Rembrandtí exhibition at Leidenís Museum de Lakenhal. What set Rembrandt apart was his wide range of subject matter, including portraits and self-portraits, landscapes, allegorical and historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes, and animal studies. Though influenced by the work of the Italian masters, Rembrandt never left the then Dutch Republic, which at the time was flush with wealth and highly acclaimed for its advances in trade, science, the military and art, particularly painting. Today, visitors from around the world flock to museums in Holland to experience his most famous works in person. NAVIGATE THE DUTCH GOLDEN AGE AND DISCOVER A SEAFARING NATION Blossoming trade in Europe and afar, scientific developments that shaped the world, a military with might and a string of achievements in the arts, the Dutch Republic was a force to be reckoned with. Its significant maritime and economic power, and contribution to the arts in the period spanning the 17th century is the focus of a yearlong celebration in the major Dutch cities of the Golden Age throughout 2019. So grab this chance to explore the lasting legacy this flourishing period has had on Holland. After all, it was during this time that the Dutch East India Company formed (the first company to ever list on an official stock exchange), that new genres and subjects in painting evolved, and that major technical advancements were made. It comes as no surprise then that an array of exhibitions will celebrate all the wonder of that golden era. VISIT EYE-OPENING EXHIBITIONS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH With a special focus on Rembrandt 350 years after his death, exhibitions in Amsterdam, Delft, Dordrecht, Haarlem, Hoorn and Enkhuizen, Leiden, Middelburg and The Hague will present a range of perspectives on this formidable Dutch master, his peers (including Pieter de Hooch

at Museum Prinsenhof in Delft, and Nicolaes Maes at the Mauritshuis), and diverse works from this golden age of wealth and wonder. The year-long programme provides an extraordinary opportunity to explore Holland too. Think paintings on loan or never shown in the Netherlands, such as items from Jerusalemís Israel Museum at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. Or the Frans Hals Museumís significant collection of 17th century paintings in Haarlem, and a water-themed exhibition at the Westfries Museum in Hoorn. These exhibitions provide a fascinating insight into this rich period and into Rembrandt, with some works rarely, if ever, seen traveling from across the globe. There is no other place in the world that has as many works by Rembrandt as the Rijksmuseum. In 2019, its complete collection of Rembrandts will be on display simultaneously for the first time: 22 paintings, 60 drawings, and 300 engravings. The exhibition represents a perfect opportunity to learn more about his pioneering techniques and innovative ideas. When in Amsterdam, you should also visit the Rembrandthuis. His former residence will organize three exhibitions revolving around the master in the theme year: Rembrandtís Social Network with works never before seen in Holland, Inspired by Rembrandt, and The Rembrandt Laboratory. Performing for the very first time in Holland

Discover the magic! The musical classic CATS by Andrew Lloyd Webber is coming to the Netherlands for a limited season of 7 weeks only. The European opening night will be in the RAI Theatre in Amsterdam on the 20th December followed by a 3 week stay until 13th January. There will be extra shows during both days of Christmas. The story The timeless story of CATS moves both young and old: it takes place on the most special evening of the year when the Jellicle tribe of cats celebrate their big ball. Tonight Old Deuteronomy will chose one of the cats to be reborn into a new cat life. Grizabella, the glamour cat who has travelled the world for several years, has come home this very evening. She would love to get in touch with her family again, but she is disappointed to find out that they are not interested in seeing her. The cats’ party is cruelly interrupted when the evil Macavity kidnaps Old Deuteronomy. The cats join forces to free their leader and the wise old tomcat chooses Grizabella to be reborn. History CATS premiered in London’s West End in May 1981. It was the start of a huge hit that still hasn’t ended over 35 years later. More than 81 million people have now seen a production of CATS

in more than 350 cities in 20 countries. After its premiere, CATS ran uninterrupted for 21 years in London with about 9000 performances. For years it was the longest running musical in the West End and the musical with the most performances on Broadway and the longest touring history in the United States. In 1983 the Broadway production won no less than 7 Tony Awards, the US theatre industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, including the award for best musical. The famous hit song ‘Memory’ has now been covered by more than 150 artists, including Céline Dion and Barbra Streisand. A brand new world tour of English performances was launched in February 2016. The tour will visit the Netherlands and it will be the first time CATS is performed in English in Holland.

The performance will have Dutch surtitles to make it easier for local spectators to follow the story.

In summer it buzzes with all sorts of outdoors activities and festivals.

The artist’s fascination with pop culture objects, sports and the influence of archeology are apparent in these spaces. The show also includes Arsham’s never before presented interactive installation Calcified Room, consisting of a domestic space furnished in mid-century style but created to appear strangely petrified. The calcified room is evocative of a cave interior scaled with minerals, or the city of Pompeii, eternally preserved in ash.

Hermitage Amsterdam’s new exhibition, Classic Beauties, will be opened at June 16. The show tells how artists and tourists flocked to Italy, and more especially Rome, in the second half of the 18th century. From all over Europe they travelled to the Eternal City in search of inspiration and to see the newly excavated classical Greco-Roman sculptures and buildings. Their experiences prompted a new and austere kind of fashionable architecture and, in the visual arts, an unprecedentedly sensual style that sent shock waves through society: a naked, superhuman beauty more daring than anything attempted by the Greeks and Romans. Neoclassicism was born.

DE NIEUWE KERK AMSTERDAM DE DAM +31 20 626 8168 Feast for the Eyes shows the NIEUWEKERK.NL rich history of food photo- TILL 3 FEB graphy - not only in the visual arts, but also in commercial and scientific photography and photojournalism. From the banality of the diner-breakfast special of Stephen Shore to the allegorical still life of Laura Letinsky, from Roger Fenton’s extensive nineteenth-century displays of food to the cookbooks of the sixties. The extensive exhibition, Feast for the Eyes, explores the most important figures and movements in food photography.

This biographical exhibition presents a wealth of objects thousands of years old alongside a number of contemporary artworks. The ancient works of art recount the life of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha. Born a wealthy prince in the fifth century BC, he chose at the age if 29 to renounce his royal lifestyle and devote himself to spiritual development. The various phases in his life - birth, renunciation, enlightenment, discourses and death - are the wellspring of Buddhism and shape the narrative of this exhibition. .

ASTRID VERHOEF. INSCAPES EDUARD PLANTING GALLERY EERST BLOEMDWARSSTRAAT 2 EDUARDPLANTING.COM 12 JAN TO 2 MAR Growing up in the city has led Astrid Verhoef to investigate her connection to nature. In a world where the reliance on social technology is growing, the difference between being connected and feeling connected has become an important distinction. Is there a growing gap between our digital self-image and analogue identity? This poses an interesting challenge, not only in the depth of connection to other people, but possibly even more in our connection to the natural world and to oneself.

Dada Masilo, one of the most exciting young choreographers in South Africa, brushes the dust from Swan Lake and adds her own South African roots to it. The result is a respectful, fresh version that raises questions about gender boundaries and homophobia in an AIDS-affected country. Masilo’s revision of Swan Lake was very well received at the International Dance Biennale in Lyon and during the performance at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. The performance was praised for her successful mix of pointes technique and contemporary dance with powerful African roots.

After the death of his wife Marie, Paul struggles to let her go. His best friend Frank tries to cheer him up, but Paul cannot be turned and flees. In Bruges, he meets Mariëtta, a dancer who looks just like his deceased wife. He takes her home, but when Mariëtta sees a picture of Marie, she understands Paul’s infatuation with her and takes of straight away. Alone, Paul surrenders to a series of visions in which Marie and Mariëtta merge into one, before ultimately strangling Mariëtta. The long dream sequence ends when Mariëtta returns to pick up the umbrella she had forgotten. When she leaves and Frank enters, Paul promises his friend that he will start his life anew.

Alternatively, grab yourself a meal at the Sea Palace (Europe’s first floating Chinese restaurant) or at one of the many Chinese restaurants along the Stormsteeg and Geldersekade. Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the most important event in the Chinese calendar. It’s a special occasion whichever part of the world you’re in, and nearly always marked by family gatherings, food rituals, offerings at temples and the colour red.

Frosty winter or not, the Museumplein in Amsterdam will be transformed into a winter experience this year. Ice*Amsterdam returns as the capital’s cosiest ice rink at the familiar Museumplein location. Young and old will slide, slip and stumble around from November 17th 2018 till February 3rd 2019. Ice*Amsterdam is the place to enjoy a hot chocolate milk, take the most beautiful winter pictures with the Rijksmuseum in the background and skate under the replica of the ‘Magere Brug’ with friends and family. Both, young and old, will experience a warm atmosphere where they can enjoy their time with each other surrounded by the breathtaking view of the Museumplein location.

The international whisky and spirits festival The Spirit of Amsterdam is held in March 2019 for the sixth time in the center of the beautiful city of Amsterdam. In a country where ice skating is considered the national sport, it’s important to have a high-standard place for individuals, families, school groups and competitive athletes to come and make the most of an Olympic-sized rink. This brings a top-notch ice-skating experience to the masses.

RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

JORDAAN The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. REMBRANDTPLEIN Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. UTRECHTSESTRAAT AREA This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. LEIDSEPLEIN Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

DINNER | CLUBS Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood. ■

Roberto’s Restaurant celebrates 25 years of pure Italian cuisine.

The two Michelin star restaurant is seated on the first floor. Moshik translates his emotions and inspiration, gained at his journeys around the world, into culinary creations. Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.

Ron Blaauw returns to basics here, creating cuisine that is pure and prepared with quality ingredients. This urban gastro-bar combines a hip, lively ambience with top class cuisine without the frills. It also means little formality but original, delicious food and sensational flavours. Phenomenal value for money, which is also reflected in the wine list.

At &moshik you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’.

It’s all about the experience at this restaurant, delicious food. Main courses start at €15 – not bad for a restaurant that is awarded with a Michelin star.

The two-starred Michelin restaurant in Amsterdam, Ciel Bleu mixes stunning views with delicious dishes to create one of Amsterdam’s finest eateries.

A light, fresh cuisine with a menu full of sparkling, flavourful sensations, recognizable dishes and unique textures. This is the style of dynamic Executive Chef Bas van Kranen, of Bord’Eau Restaurant Gastronomique the Michelin-starred restaurant of hotel De L’Europe Amsterdam. With stunning views over the bustling city center of Amsterdam, you may enjoy the most high-profile presentations where visuality plays a huge role in the dishes. The intimate setting, the simplicity of the décor and the personalized service enhance the memorable experience that will last forever. With over 850 wine labels Bord’Eau is honoured by Wine Spectator 2017 for having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world.

Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam is located on the garden level, overlooking this lush and peaceful urban oasis. Sidney Schutte’s signature is clearly prominent across a variety of dishes, taking guests on an extraordinary culinary journey that evokes tantalizing taste sensations. Guests can indulge in thoughtfully composed menus or choose from an exquisite à-la-carte selection. Alongside with Executive Chef Sidney Schutte works Danny Spoel as Chef de Cuisine of Librije’s Zusje. The restaurant wrote history when it was awarded two Michelin stars in November 2014, only 7 months after its opening. “From zero to two Michelin stars is truly unique; with a new restaurant and a new team; this is extraordinary.”

Roberto’s philosophy is simple: truly Italian in every sense of the word. To start with, it means feeling responsible for preserving the culinary heritage and traditional dishes of the Italian cucina. Under the direction of executive chef Franz Conde all typical classic Italian dishes are prepared with great enthusiasm. Franz’s vision on cooking and passion for pure Italian products give him plenty of inspiration. The philosophy of the general manager and vision of the executive chef were combined in the cookbook ‘Pure Italian Cuisine’.

Located on the 23rd floor of the delightful Hotel Okura, the restaurant offers sumptuous fare among elegant surroundings. Chefs Onno Kokmeijer and Arjan Speelman use fresh, locally produced ingredients to create gastronomic masterpieces. Combined with impeccable service, the food on offer is likely to be one of the highlights of your holiday, but remember to book ahead; the restaurant’s popularity means that reservations need to be made well in advance

While it’s true there are smarter venues in the city, shinier, chicer places, this one has its own lowley energy, a sense of heart. Inside it’s a deep red boudoir sort of space, draped in velvet. There are thick burgundy curtains and lots of dark wooden furniture and – of course – there’s a piano, where every day of the week live music is played. Open: Sun. - Thu. 21:00 - 03:00. Fri. 17:00 - 04:00, Sat. 21:00 - 04:00.

AMSTERDAMMERTJES

THROUGH THE CANALS

An Amsterdammertje is the typical red brown steel bollard that is used to separate the sidewalk from the street in Amsterdam.

Of course the canals are one of the major attractions of the ‘Venice of the North’. By daytime already very charming, by night they become even more enchanting because many of the canal houses and bridges are beautifully illuminated. You can sample the canal views by taking a canal tour with Blue Boat at the Stadhouderskade. We offer audio commentary in 21 languages. Our boats also give you an unique vantage point for taking the best photographs of the city! For reservations, see blueboat.nl or call +31 20 679 1370.

TIME

DRIVING A CAR IN AMSTERDAM Amsterdam’s historic centre wasn’t built for the modern means of transportation and as a result it has become quite congested over the years. Driving in Amsterdam is not recommended.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Amsterdam can best be travelled by public transport. Parking is not only a problem, but also rather expensive. Public transport is well-organised and you can either take a tram, bus, metro or taxi. For information about travelling in the Netherlands, call +31 900 9292 or check 9292.nl/en.

TAXIS In the Netherlands it is not customary to hail a taxi. To take a taxi you go to a taxi rank, of which there are many. In your hotel, restaurants, shops, etc. you can ask to order you a taxi, or you can call +31 20 777 7777. Taxis are of good quality, but relatively expensive.

ELECTRICITY The voltage in the Netherlands is 230 volts.

CANAL BIKES If you care to venture into the canals on your own or if you’re feeling energetic, you can also try the more adventurous pedal boats. You can set off from one landing stage and leave your Canal Bike at another. Drift through the canals in your own time, you cannot fail to discover the most surprising things. Call +31 20 626 5574 for more information. ■
