Is it just me, or did we all blink and somehow land in June? I still haven’t unpacked my summer beach bag, and now I’m rummaging around for jumpers and bringing out the slow cooker.
The year hasn’t exactly gone the way I thought it would—an understatement to say the least. But here’s the thing I’ve come to realise: when everything feels like it’s slipping off course, it has a funny way of bringing clarity.
Because darkness—literal or metaphorical—has a sneaky power. It reveals your light sources. The people who show up. The habits that ground you. The corners of your life that still glow, even when nothing’s going to plan. And if you pay attention, those things start to mean more than the original roadmap ever did.
So now, as the days get shorter and the mornings frostier, I’m choosing to lean in. I’m lighting candles just because. I’m wearing pyjamas before dinner and not apologising for it. I’m drinking my coffee slower, cooking heavier meals, walking later in the day when the air bites a bit—and finding comfort in the fact that winter forces you to pause.
There’s something nourishing about this season. Maybe it’s the permission to slow down. To stop chasing all the shoulds and instead curl up with the coulds. Could rest. Could reflect. Could say no without explaining.
Winter asks you to settle into your home and yourself. To notice the little things: the warmth of a good blanket, the friend who texts you “just checking in”, the soup that simmers away while you’re still in your robe. It’s less about pushing forward and more about looking inward—and strangely, that feels right.
So, if your year isn’t shaping up the way you’d imagined, take heart. There’s still time. Time to shift, soften, or stay still. Time to start again, or simply sit with what is. And if it feels like you’re walking through a season of less light, look for the glow. You might be surprised where it’s coming from.
And remember: you’re not behind. You’re just wintering.

From Crisis to Care: How one small dog reminds us why AWLQ’s work matters more
than ever
When Lulu arrived at the Animal Welfare League Queensland’s (AWLQ) Community Vet Clinic, it was clear that she had been suffering in silence for far too long.
The two-year-old French Bulldog was in agony—her skin inflamed, her ears so badly infected she could barely hear. Her gentle eyes looked at us pleadingly. Beneath her sweet, expressive face was a world of silent discomfort that had gone untreated for a long time.
Veterinarians quickly diagnosed her with chronic ear infections and severe aural haematomas—painful blood blisters that had built up inside both ears. The prognosis was grim. If she was to live without pain, Lulu needed emergency surgery to remove both her ear canals. It was a high-risk procedure, rarely done on both sides at once—especially in brachycephalic breeds like Lulu, who already struggle with breathing and recovery.
But Lulu didn’t have the luxury of time. She needed relief. She needed a miracle.
And thanks to AWLQ—and the generosity of the community—that miracle arrived.
Dr. Ali, one of AWLQ’s senior shelter veterinarians, performed the delicate, three-hour surgery. It cost the organisation
thousands and when many shelters wouldn’t have attempted such a complicated surgery, Dr Ali knew knew she could help her. And Lulu pulled through. She is now healing, pain-free, and rediscovering the joy of simply being a dog. And she’s been adopted!
Lulu’s story is heart-wrenching, but sadly, not unusual.
Every year, AWLQ steps in to provide urgent medical care, rehabilitation, and safe shelter to thousands of animals just like Lulu—animals who have nowhere else to turn. As the colder months
settle in, the demand for our services grows. Winter is a particularly tough time for vulnerable animals—especially those abandoned, injured, or living in unfit conditions. The costs of veterinary care, food, shelter, and rehabilitation don’t pause because the temperature drops. In fact, they often rise.
That’s why our annual Winter Appeal is so critical.
Donations made before June 30 not only help save lives like Lulu’s—they ensure AWLQ can keep its doors open to the next animal in need, and the next after that. We know there will be more Lulus. More silent sufferers. More lives hanging in the balance.

Grassroots Disaster Relief Movement
When the 2022 Northern Rivers floods hit, Byrrill Creek was completely cut off. Roads were swallowed by landslides, the local bridge had collapsed, and all communication had ceased. For five days, Lila couldn’t reach her father. The anxiety was overwhelming—until help arrived, organised by a woman Lila had never met.
That woman was Sammy Stenberg, founder and CEO of National Disaster Management Services (NDMS)—a 100 per cent volunteerrun, not-for-profit social enterprise that’s quietly rewriting the rules of grassroots disaster relief in Australia.
It started in 2017, when a cyclone tore through North Queensland. Within 12 hours, a small group of emergency servicestrained responders and everyday civilians came together to fill the urgent gaps they saw in the relief response.
From the debris and the water, NDMS was formed. A humanitarian-focused not-forprofit social enterprise designed to provide one thing: action.
Since then, NDMS has responded to cyclones in Queensland, fires across QLD and NSW, and major flooding events in both states. With no corporate funding, limited resources, and little more than grit and community connection, they’ve shown up in the hardest-hit regions—often reaching places larger organisations couldn’t.
“We’ve done it against the odds: without money, without reputation and support, without proper kit and equipment,” says Sammy.
“We grew lean, agile and resilient while remaining determined to reach the most vulnerable. Our lack of resources wasn’t a weakness but rather our resourcefulness was our strength.”
When Byrrill Creek went dark, NDMS again stepped in.
“Sammy rapidly organised supplies to be driven through the treacherous terrain to reach the collapsed bridge,” wrote Ranger Lila, whose father was among the isolated, in an Instagram post.
“The roads were incredibly dangerous to drive on, with multiple landslides, a cliff face on one side, and fallen trees.”
Lila’s father and neighbours hiked across the broken bridge to collect 400kgs of supplies. Hiking by road wasn’t viable due to the landslides, so they made the trek through floodwater and thick mud. Her father alone hiked 30km in a single day, carrying 80kg of supplies to help the rest of the community.
“Sammy also did welfare checks on the community, ensuring that all their medical needs were met.”
During the supply drop, they located the deceased body of a local resident who had become trapped in the floodwaters—a tragic reminder of just how vital these interventions are.
From the beginning, NDMS has prioritised community-led action over top-down solutions. Instead of arriving with readymade fixes, Sammy and her team embed themselves in communities, listening first and acting alongside locals.
“We didn’t arrive with ready-made solutions but sought to learn and understand needs and work through challenges and problems together.”
NDMS responders often sleep in tents or swags, hitching rides in helicopters, utes, or tractors to reach isolated areas. Their commitment has made them a critical link between cut-off communities and larger relief organisations.
“We became the link between cutoff communities and conventional humanitarian relief; getting aid that was needed to where it was most needed.”
Sammy herself is no stranger to resilience. An award-winning entrepreneur who has built multiple businesses, she has overcome PTSD and now uses her experience to empower others.
Today, NDMS is continuing to grow, training new volunteers and preparing to respond wherever the next need arises. But the heart of the mission remains unchanged.
“NDMS isn’t just about disaster response; it’s about restoring confidence, rebuilding lives, and creating lasting community change,” Sammy says.
From Byrrill Creek to cyclone-devastated towns in North Queensland, one thing is clear: Sammy isn’t just leading a disaster relief team—she’s leading a movement.

The Quiet Hair Loss Epidemic Among Women
Women in their 20s are increasingly reaching out for help with patchy brows and thinning hair—and it’s not just a concern for the young. Women in their 50s and 60s are also experiencing noticeable hair loss, according to Ally Dellabarca, founder and CEO of RadianceRevolution.com.au

Why does guilt creep in the moment you choose to care for yourself?
You pour a quiet cup of tea. You fantasise about a weekend retreat. You crave just one hour alone to walk, stretch, or simply sit in silence. But you don't follow through, because guilt shows up, whispering: “What about the kids? The homework? The lunches?” And just like that, you're back on the treadmill.
Not because you've done something wrong, but because you dared to do something just for you.
As mothers, we adore our children. With all our hearts. We work hard, we carry the mental load, we juggle school forms and sport, run households, careers, emotional check-ins, and everything in between. And when we hit empty, we still keep giving.
So why does pausing feel so hard?
Part of it is biological. Our nervous systems are wired to scan for our children's safety and wellbeing. Part of it is societal, we've internalised the message that mothers put themselves last.
And that can take a toll. Research shows that mothers who consistently neglect their own needs are at increased risk of burnout, anxiety, depression and even resentment, making it harder to be present, patient, or joyful with the very people we love most. Studies by Mikolajczak (2018) found that maternal burnout specifically affects not only mothers' wellbeing but also their children's emotional security.
Here's the truth: self-care doesn't take you away from your family. It gives them the best of you, not what's left of you.
To shift out of self-care guilt, start with a reframe:
“I feel guilty resting” “I’m recharging to show up fully.”
“I should be doing more” “I’ve done enough today.”
“Everyone needs me” “I need myself, too.”
Small steps matter. Start with five quiet minutes. Schedule a monthly coffee date with yourself. Create a “self-care alarm” that's non-negotiable. Ask for help. Say no without over- explaining.
Create your own permission slip: You are allowed to prioritise yourself. It's a requirement.
Because when you choose health, energy, and mental wellbeing, you're not just caring for yourself. You're leading by example. You're teaching your children what boundaries and self-compassion look like. And ultimately, you're teaching them the most important lesson of all: they deserve self-care and so do you.

The hidden risk: understanding breast density and cancer

How
common is breast cancer?
Over 21,000 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Risk of breast cancer increases greatly after the age of 50. However, around 1,000 women aged under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. 1:7 women and 1:550 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
I have felt a breast lump. Are most breast lumps cancerous?
No. Approximately 10% of breast lumps are cancers, and 90% are not cancer. It is important to have any new breast changes investigated with your doctor. This can include a new lump, dimpling of the skin, new onset redness, nipple changes such as crusting, ulceration, abnormal nipple discharge or new onset of nipple inversion.
Should I be checked out if I had a normal screening mammogram last year?
Yes. If a patient develops new breast symptoms these should be checked with a doctor. BreastScreen is a health initiative that aims to reduce illness and death from breast cancer. Women aged 50-74 are actively invited to free mammogram screening every 2 years. Women aged 40 to 49 or over 75 can also attend who do not have breast symptoms. Some women can also undergo breast checks and have breast imaging organised with their general practitioner.
Can women with breast implants have mammograms?
Yes. It is generally safe to have a mammogram with breast implants. However, it is important to advise the imaging company or BreastScreen beforehand so that the best images can be obtained.
What is breast density?
Breasts are made of a mixture of glandular tissue, fibrous connective tissue, and fatty breast tissue. It is not something that can be determined when breasts are examined. Only a radiologist looking at a mammogram can tell if a woman has dense breasts. Density describes the relative amount of these different types of breast tissue as seen on a mammogram. Dense breast tissue has relatively higher amounts of glandular and fibrous connective tissue and relatively low amounts of fatty breast tissue. Dense breast tissue can make mammograms more difficult to interpret because dense breast tissue and abnormal changes both appear white on mammograms whereas fatty tissue appears dark. This can result in women with dense breasts being called back for more follow-up testing to reduce risk of missing cancer. At present there is not enough evidence to recommend more testing in women with dense breasts; however, breast MRI, USS and contrast mammograms are tests that can give doctors more information to reduce the risk of missing cancer. You can discuss this with your GP or be referred to a breast specialist to discuss this further.
Are dense breasts common?
Yes, dense breasts are common. Nearly half of all women who are 40 and older who get mammograms are found to have dense breast tissue. Higher breast density can be hereditary, is associated with low body mass index and may be seen in women who use hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms. Lower breast density can be due to increasing age and having had children.
What is a strong family history?
Having 2 or more people in the family – particularly firstdegree relatives (mother, sister or daughter) who meet any of the following criteria is classified as strong:
• Breast cancer before age 40
• Triple negative breast cancer
• First degree relatives with breast or ovarian cancer
• Breast or ovarian cancer in the same woman
• Male breast cancer
• Breast cancer that occurs in both breasts
• Ashkenazi Jewish history
• Many people on the same side of the family affected by breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate cancer, sarcoma or melanoma.
95% of breast cancers have nothing to do with family history.
What tests will be performed if my doctor is suspicious of breast cancer?
After thorough history and clinical examination your doctor may order the following. Breast imaging such as mammogram and ultrasound and in some instances breast MRI. Diagnosis also requires taking some tissue with a biopsy which is usually performed by a radiologist and involves a fine needle biopsy or core biopsy. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer then you will be referred to a surgeon to discuss further treatment options.
What if I have breast cancer?
Many people diagnosed with breast cancer are successfully treated. Finding breast cancer early offers the best chance of successful treatment and recovery. The five-year survival rate for Stage 1 (early) breast cancer is, on average, 100% and Stage 2 is 95%. For locally advanced cancers (known as Stage 3) the survival rate is 81%, while the five-year survival rate for Stage 4 (metastatic breast cancer) is significantly lower at 32%.

Having a breast problem can be very stressful, particularly if you need lots of tests. Some women who receive the all-clear with their results may find it takes time to stop worrying. The best contact is initially your general practitioner to speak to about any breast concerns you have and they can refer you to a breast specialist if required. Talking with your partner, family or friends can be helpful, or you can call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.

ARE DATING APPS CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY?
In today's swipe-right world, finding love is only a profile picture away. But behind the filtered photos and witty bios, a new study is revealing a more complex reality: dating apps may be fuelling a rising obsession with cosmetic procedures, particularly among women.
Researchers from the University of South Australia have found that women who use dating apps are 20% more likely to consider or undergo cosmetic enhancements like dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. The reason? The pressure to look perfect in a digital-first dating world.
Dating apps have reduced the stigma around meeting partners online, but they've also created new kinds of social pressure—especially when it comes to how we look. While social media's impact on body image is well-documented, this study is among the first to specifically examine the effect of dating apps.
The visual nature of dating apps prioritises photo-based profiles, placing pressure, particularly on women, to project an idealised and perfect version of themselves. The connection between dating apps and appearance-altering choices isn't just skin-deep. Women who use dating apps also reported more positive attitudes towards cosmetic surgery than non-users. What's more, those who frequently use filters or digitally edit their images were also more likely to consider real-life cosmetic procedures.
When you are so used to seeing yourself through a range of filters and airbrushing, it can be tempting to make those edits come to life through cosmetic enhancements.
The research surveyed over 300 Australian women aged 18 to 72. Nearly half had used a dating app within the past two years, and one in five reported having had at least one cosmetic procedure.
Introducing more personality-based matching algorithms could also be considered to reduce the emphasis
on physical looks, and apps could offer built-in body image interventions such as self-compassion exercises to mitigate the pressures to alter one’s appearance.
With dating app usage growing rapidly— eHarmony predicts more than 70% of relationships will begin online by 2040— these concerns are becoming increasingly relevant. The culture of digital dating is changing not only how people meet, but how they see themselves.

Young Men,Influencers, and the Shaping of Masculinity
In an era defined by social media, the influence of online personalities on young minds has never been more profound— particularly when it comes to ideas about masculinity.
A recent survey by the Movember Institute has revealed a striking statistic: 68% of young Australian men actively engage with “masculinity influencers” across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and emerging social apps.
These influencers range from fitness gurus and lifestyle coaches to motivational speakers and selfstyled “alpha male” advocates. Their content often revolves around personal development, financial success, physical fitness, dating advice, and what it means to “be a real man” in today’s society. While this has created opportunities for positive role modelling and self-improvement, health experts are sounding the alarm about the potential risks these messages may carry for young men’s mental health and identity formation.
At the heart of the concern is the way masculinity is being defined—or more accurately, narrowed. Many influencers present a version of manhood that prioritizes dominance, stoicism, physical
prowess, and material success, often discouraging emotional vulnerability or non-traditional expressions of masculinity. According to psychologists, when young men are repeatedly exposed to rigid or hyper-masculine ideals, it can create internal conflicts. Boys who do not or cannot align with these portrayals may feel inadequate, ashamed, or isolated.
Mental health professionals warn that such influences can contribute to anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia, and even exacerbate feelings of loneliness. This is particularly concerning given that suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australian men aged 15–44, and social isolation is one of the most significant contributing factors. By promoting an unattainable or narrow version of manhood, influencers may—knowingly or unknowingly—deepen the struggles that young men already face.
However, it’s important not to paint all masculinity influencers with the same brush. There are many who advocate for healthy masculinity—encouraging emotional intelligence, open communication, mental health support, and community building. Programs like Movember’s “Man of More Words” campaign highlight the need for men to talk openly about their feelings, and some influencers are positively reinforcing these messages.
The conversation around masculinity is at a crossroads. Young men are seeking identity, purpose, and belonging in a fast-changing world, and online voices play a growing role in filling that void. The challenge, experts say, is ensuring that this influence is positive rather than damaging.
Educational campaigns, mentorship programs, and open dialogues are being called for to help young men critically assess the messages they consume online. Initiatives in schools and community groups across Australia, including the Gold Coast, are also stepping in to create spaces where young men can discuss masculinity in broader, healthier terms— promoting self-worth that isn’t tied to outdated stereotypes.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND SCROLLING
Research suggests that the average person spends up to three hours a day scrolling through social media, with 1 in 4 adults reporting they feel “unable to stop” even if they are working on reducing screen time. This is often because the lines between a person’s work and social digital presence are blurred. In fact, according to Google Trend data, the search
term ‘personal branding + digital detox’ has seen a 173.09 per cent uplift in the past month. Such an increase is no surprise, as employees and entrepreneurs alike work to present themselves as their own brand, igniting fear that stepping away from your phone may reduce visibility and growth opportunities.
As a result of social media’s infinite scrolling feature, it’s now effortless for users to consume endless screen time. Infinite scrolling increases screentime by 40%, as the user doesn’t encounter any stopping points.
Research by the Journal of Behavioural Neuroscience found that scrolling the internet fires the same neuropathways as addictive substances, creating a psychological dependency. The constant urge to scroll is built on a foundation of
dopamine, the brain’s ‘feel-good’ hormone. Whenever users are exposed to an online interaction, such as a like or comment, the brain releases a burst of dopamine, encouraging a repeat in the behaviour. This experience is known as variable reward reinforcement.
Whether the use of the internet is integrated into your line of work or for social use only, ensure that you implement the following to ensure that you obtain ‘down time’:

The human brain operates in cycles of high and low energy that last 90 minutes. After 50-60 minutes of focused activity, energy levels decrease. Taking 10-minute breaks, every hour allows the brain to recover from cognitive overload.

Focus on mindfulness when browsing online. Avoid doomscrolling and choose meaningful interactions instead of continuous scrolling.

For many teenagers, friendships are everything. Peers play a major role in shaping their values, behaviours, and even their sense of identity. But while the term peer pressure often conjures up negative images—risky choices, rebellion, and poor judgment—peer influence isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, it can be one of the most powerful forces for good in a young person’s life.
Peer influence is the impact that a friend or peer group has on someone’s attitudes, decisions, or behaviours. It can be as simple as changing the way they dress or as significant as influencing their moral compass. Teenagers are especially sensitive to this influence because fitting in and being accepted by their peers is a key part of adolescent development.
But peer influence isn't always about pressure. Sometimes, it’s about support
Positive peer influence—also known as peer support—can help teens grow in all the right ways. A strong, supportive group of friends can encourage healthy habits, like studying, staying active, or steering clear of risky behaviour. These are the friends who celebrate each other’s wins, encourage each other to do the right thing, and show up when it counts.
Teens surrounded by this kind of energy often feel more confident in making good choices. They learn to treat themselves and others with respect, and they feel a stronger sense of belonging and self-worth.
On the flip side, peer influence can sometimes steer teens in the wrong direction. Young people may go along with risky or unhealthy behaviours because they fear losing their friendships or being left out. This is especially true for teens who feel isolated, rejected, or unsure of themselves.
In some cases, a teen might start to change how they dress, who they hang out with, or even their values—all to gain acceptance. They might go against their better judgment or even break family rules, just to avoid feeling like the odd one out.
The good news? Parents and carers can help their teens navigate peer influence with confidence. Here are a few simple strategies:
• Practice saying “no”. Role-play situations where your teen might feel pressured, and help them rehearse confident responses that feel natural— not confrontational.
• Praise good decisions. When your teen resists negative pressure, acknowledge it. Reinforcing their choices builds resilience and self-trust.
• Be curious, not critical. If they mess up, ask questions before reacting. Teens are more likely to open up when they feel heard—not judged.
Most importantly, remind your teen to listen to their own gut. A simple rule of thumb: If something feels wrong, it probably is But if it feels right, safe, and true to who they are—going along with the crowd might not be such a bad thing.
Because in the end, peer influence isn’t just about fitting in. It’s about learning how to stand tall—sometimes with your friends, and sometimes in spite of them.

The traditional path—high school, university, career—once seemed like the surest route to success. But today’s young Australians are navigating a different world. Soaring university fees, changing job markets, and the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are reshaping what “success” looks like.
AI is already writing reports, analysing data, and assisting in everything from customer service to medical diagnostics. By 2030, up to 30% of tasks in industries like administration, finance, and journalism could be automated. That puts pressure on many university-led careers to evolve—or risk becoming obsolete.
In contrast, manual trades like electrical work, plumbing, and construction remain largely immune to automation. These jobs demand physical presence, problemsolving, and practical skills—areas where humans still outperform machines.
The Apprenticeship Advantage
More young Australians are turning to vocational pathways. Apprenticeships in trades such as carpentry and automotive offer:
• Earn while you learn—start making money from day one.
• Low or no student debt—a big plus in today’s economy.
• Real-world skills—training that leads directly into employment.
• Ideal for hands-on learners—great for those who learn by doing.
Despite this, university is still often seen as the “prestige” option. Cultural expectations and outdated ideas mean some teens feel trades are a fallback, not a first choice. But in reality, many trades offer excellent career prospects and strong earning potential— without a HECS debt.

Rethinking the Conversation

How to Truly Switch Off on Holiday
You’re finally on holiday—but your mind is still in the office. You're mentally drafting emails, worrying about your to-do list, or checking notifications. With remote work and round-the-clock access to everything on our phones, the line between work and rest has blurred. The result? Many of us don’t really switch off, and that constant mental load can lead to burnout and poor mental health.
Travel expert Justin Chapman from Go2Africa and psychologist Dr Seeta Shah from Panda London explain why it’s hard to disconnect—and how to actually make your time off feel like a break
Why It's So Hard to Switch Off
Modern work culture glorifies being busy and accessible. There’s often an unspoken pressure to be “on” at all times— even when you’re technically on leave. If your boss and colleagues work through their holidays, it’s easy to feel guilty for stepping away.
Plus, the thought of returning to a backlog can feel more stressful than just staying semi-available while you’re away. But this mindset undermines the benefits of rest.
“Disconnection from work can feel unfamiliar, especially if it’s only for a few days,” says Dr Shah. “But it’s a valuable chance to reset habits, including sleep, and to give your mind the space to recover.”
Prepare Before You Travel
Start switching off before your trip. Turn off work-related notifications outside of hours now, so it feels less abrupt when you go on leave. Incorporate relaxing activities like yoga or meditation after work, even for 15 minutes—it helps train your brain to unwind.
Manage Your Devices
More than half of us check work emails while on holiday. With your phone doubling as your map, camera and payment method, it’s hard to switch it off completely. But you can reduce temptation. Remove work apps from your home screen or turn off notifications altogether.
If you absolutely must check in, limit yourself to 30 minutes a day—and only for urgent matters. Dr Shah warns that even a short glance at work emails can trigger anxiety and spike cortisol levels, undoing hours of relaxation.
Schedule Real Downtime
Many of us are so used to rushing through daily life that we overschedule holidays too. But if your itinerary is packed with backto-back sightseeing, you’ll come home needing another holiday.
Give yourself permission to rest. That might mean reading on the beach, wandering through a local town, or simply enjoying a morning coffee with no plans. “Squeezing in too much keeps your brain in go-mode,” says Dr Shah, “making it harder to sleep and recharge.”
Plan Ahead

We took time to explore the ship’s many amenities, sampling the bars, lounges, and eateries, then danced the night away in the Music Hall to Aussie classics we hadn’t heard in far too long (yes, we still knew every word).
On day two, we joined the Sip, Tour, Brunch experience—a behind-the-scenes look at the ship’s galley operations, followed by a refined dining experience topped off with cheeky mimosas. Because where else did we need to be?
We soaked up the sunshine on the pool deck, laughed until our sides hurt during the belly flop contest, had a refreshing dip at the Solarium (adults only) and enjoyed more cocktails and conversation as the day melted into a warm, golden evening.
The perfect finale came with Sequins and Feathers, a dazzling production bursting with glitz, glamour, and high-energy entertainment. With stunning costumes, incredible choreography, and a talented cast of performers, the show felt like a slice of Vegas at sea.
Though it was only two nights, the cruise felt like a full escape—a chance to unwind, reconnect, and rediscover the simple joy of being at sea. We head to the Byron Bay hinterland to discover a luxurious sanctuary that’s ideal for a solo escape, family stay, or a girl’s getaway, where you’ll slow down, chill out and reconnect with nature—and yourself.
We left the coastline and hustle of the Byron Bay coastline just fifteen minutes ago, but already it feels as though we’ve driven into a different world. A world that feels untouched by the 21st century.
We’re here to visit Amaroo Bangalow— named from the Aboriginal word meaning “a beautiful place”, this is more than just a luxurious estate: it’s a dreamy escape that embodies nature and stillness in every detail.
Spread across 213 acres of rolling green hills, creeks, and rainforest pockets, Amaroo is the perfect secluded sanctuary. The emphasis is to slow down and reconnect with natue—and nature certainly delivers! Rather than alarms, bird song is our wake-up call, friendly and curious cows and free-range chickens roaming the country lane are our neighbours, and the stars and an outdoor fire are our evening entertainment for the next two nights.
For proud owners Cathy and Mike Tomkins, Amaroo is the realisation of a dream. They first fell in love with the property in 2016, when it was a neglected former cattle farm, overgrown and out of balance. But they saw the potential to turn it into paradise. Not just for tourism—but for regeneration. “Everything we’re doing is for the land and for ourselves,” Cathy says. “The ecotourism has naturally become a part of that.”
Since taking control, they have planted more than 45,000 native trees, restored biodiversity, and welcomed koalas, platypus, wallabies, and black cockatoos back to the land. Working with organisations like East Coast Bush Regeneration and Bangalow Koalas, they’ve turned Amaroo into a living, breathing example of sustainability in action. Today, the estate runs on 100% rainwater and is 70% solar-powered.
Harmonious homes
As we drive through the towering palms lining the private entryway, Amaroo reveals itself slowly, almost shyly to us. Architecturally designed cabins with black timber exteriors and natural interiors emerge from the landscape, like inhabitants of the forest. Every aspect of the design is intentional—modern but earthy, minimalist but deeply warm. Mike and his father Vince crafted many of the fittings themselves, including the lighting and large communal dining table.
The retreat is composed of four separate studios—three sleek cabins and a standalone loft—and a striking central pavilion. Guests can book a single cabin or the whole estate (sleeps 8 adults and 6 children), with exclusive use guaranteed either way. Designed for both privacy and connection, Mike and Cathy created the space with families and groups of friends in mind. And it works, beautifully. The privacy of the bedrooms sits comfortably beside the common kitchen area.
As we step inside, the temptation to sit and relax to soak up the calm environment is overwhelming. The tranquil combination of soft linens, raw timber, local artwork and floor-to-ceiling views of the rainforest and paddock is soft and inviting. Outside, the estate’s experiences unfurl, with a sparkling emerald-green swimming pool, wood-fired pizza oven, starlit outdoor showers, firepit and conversation circle. There’s even two romantic swings on opposing hilltops—the perfect place to sip champagne at sunset.
A slow philosophy
Amaroo doesn’t just encourage you to slow down—it insists on it. There’s no rush here, just gentle rituals: we quickly embrace its pace. There’s morning walks through regenerating bushland, gathering fresh eggs from the roaming hens, a quick dip in the creek, followed by delicious coffee brewed in the communal kitchen as the morning fog lifts from the hills.
Although Byron Bay is just a 15-minute drive away, most guests never leave the property. Cathy and Mike say this is by design. “We created Amaroo as a place to reconnect— with nature, with family, with self,” Mike says. “You’re meant to stop scrolling and start noticing.”
There’s no on-site restaurant, but who needs one when you can dine creekside on a picnic packed by the concierge, or gather under the stars for a fire-cooked feast? Soon, there’ll be estate-harvested honey to complement the eggs, and if you don’t feel like cooking, the Amaroo team can arrange catering, private chefs, in-house massages, or a fully stocked pantry before you arrive.
Despite its grandeur, Amaroo is humble at heart. The estate is not about excess but about considered living. From the recycled materials used in construction, to the solar power and organic gardens, to the welcoming space for children and pets, the retreat balances sophistication with true and authentic soul. For Mike and Cathy, that’s the greatest luxury they can offer. And it’s one they’ve worked hard to earn—not just for themselves, but for every guest who visits. “We want people to leave not just relaxed but restored. Connected. Changed,” Cathy says.
Families are especially welcome, and the layout is ideal for groups that want to be together—without being on top of one another. Children can roam safely within the gated
property, while adults relax in the conversation pit or take a moment on the swing. Dogs are also invited, with secure fencing and thoughtful touches like bowls in every cabin.
As night falls, we’re welcome by the absences— there’s no traffic, no lights, no noise but the wind and wildlife. We sink into the experience and Amaroo becomes something truly rare—a place of absolute stillness.
In a world where many escapes are about more—more pools, more features, more noise—Amaroo stands out by offering less. Less rush. Less stress. Less distraction. And in doing so, it gives us, and will give all its visitors, far more than expected.

MapleGlazed Lamb
Chops with Winter Veg
Ingredients:
• ½ cup pure maple syrup (preferably dark syrup for its robust taste)
• 2 tsp ground ginger
• 2 tsp dried tarragon
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1 tsp ground fennel seeds
• ½ tsp ground black pepper
• ½ tsp chilli powder
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• ½ tsp salt
• 12 lamb chops
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 cup feta cheese
Method:
1. In a medium bowl, mix the maple syrup, ginger, tarragon, cinnamon, fennel, pepper, chilli powder, garlic powder and salt until well combined.
2. Rub lamb chops with olive oil and place on a plate.
3. Preheat griddle over a high heat.
4. Brush griddle lightly with oil and cook for 5 minutes on each side then rub chops with glaze until evenly coated. Remove to a plate and leave to rest for a few minutes.
5. Crumble over the feta and serve seasonal vegetables with the lamb chops.
Ingredients:
• 8-10 multicoloured carrots
• 4-5 parsnips sliced into quarters
• 3-4 small beetroot scrubbed and sliced into halves
• 1 large onion sliced into quarters
• 1 garlic bulb
• Olive oil
• Salt and pepper
• 100ml pure maple syrup (preferably golden colour for its delicate flavour)
• Fresh thyme and rosemary to serve
Maple Winter Vegetables
Method:
1. Place your oven on 200°C to heat up, drizzle 23 tbsp olive oil into your oven dish and place in the oven.
2. Meanwhile prep the veg.
3. Once the oven is up to temperature, remove the oven dish and place all the veg into the tray along with olive oil and generous pinches of salt and pepper and maple syrup.
4. Place in the oven for 20 mins before roughly turning the veg and place back in the oven for 5-10 mins.
5. Top with fresh rosemary and thyme and an extra pinch of salt before serving.
Maple Beef Cheek Massaman Curry
Ingredients:
For The Beef Massaman Curry:
• 3 tbsp vegetable oil
• 2 brown onions, sliced
• 3 ¼ cups potatoes, peeled and chopped into small pieces
• 1.5kg beef cheeks
• 2 garlic cloves, crushed
• 2 tbsp tamarind paste
• 6 tbsp massaman curry paste
• 1 3/5 cups coconut milk
• 5 cups beef stock
• 3 tbsp fish sauce
• 1 tbsp salt
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 3 tbsp pure maple syrup (preferably amber syrup for its rich taste)
• 1 tbsp smooth peanut butter
• Juice of one lime
To Serve:
• ½ cup roasted peanuts, chopped
• 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
• Jasmine rice
• Roti
Method:
1. Heat the oil in a large pot over a medium-low heat.
2. Add the onion and sauté for a minute until softened.
3. Add the potatoes and cook for another minute.
4. Add the beef cheeks, garlic, massaman and tamarind pastes and sauté for a further 5 minutes.
5. Add the coconut milk and beef stock and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer on low for 1 hour and 15 minutes until the beef is tender and falling apart.
6. Stir in the fish sauce, salt, cinnamon stick, maple syrup, peanut butter and lime juice and simmer for 10 more minutes.
7. Top with fresh coriander and roasted peanuts and serve with the jasmine rice and roti.
Maple Bread and Butter Pudding
Ingredients:
• 2tbsp pure maple syrup (preferably amber syrup for its rich taste)
• 100g maple sugar maple sugar
• 100g butter
• 6 apples, peeled and sliced
• 250ml double cream
• 250ml milk
• 3 eggs
• Seeds from 1 vanilla pod
• 450ml brioche loaf, sliced
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 120°C.
2. Melt the sugar and butter in a pan. Add the apples and stir until the apples have softened.
3. Whisk cream and milk together with the eggs and pure amber maple syrup. Add the vanilla pod seeds.
4. In a buttered ovenproof dish, layer the slices of apple and brioche. Pour the milk mixture over the brioche and apple and leave to soak for 30 minutes.
5. Once soaked, cook for 1 hour.
6. Brush dark pure maple syrup over the brioche and apple. Place under the grill until golden brown.
