Letter from Nicole — Editor —

Hello and welcome to the beginning the year. The real beginning. When you finally start feeling organised and caught up from the year before. When you can actually start looking forward instead of back. Or is that just me?

More often than not, my ‘catch up’ period after seeing in a new year goes for a solid two months. It’s not until March that I really start to feel like I’m caught up (if there’s such a state of being), and can focus on the year ahead.

The weather tends to match the sentiment, cooling down just a little; enough to say, ‘hey, holiday time is over, time to get yourself together girl!’.

Have I got myself together? Possibly not. But am I ready to? Definitely!

Here at Get it magazine, we think many of you might just feel the same way, so this issue is all about starting afresh, turning over a new leaf and setting yourself up for success – whatever that might look like for you.

For me, it’s about saying ‘yes’ more often. Trying new things and remembering to fix my own oxygen mask first.

So far, I’ve said yes to jumping off a bridge into the ocean, yes to trying Kava while in Vanuatu, and yes to going out on a school night to watch Chemical Brothers.

I caught a virus and had to bail on the last one, but the intention is there!

So, go on. Say yes to something new this week, even if it is taking five minutes for yourself to flick through your favourite mag with a wheel of cheese and a glass of bubbles.

Weight Loss

WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

Being overweight or obese can be one of the most frustrating health problems we face.

As well as affecting self-esteem and mental health, contributing to low energy, it has major detrimental effects, leading to many medical problems and a shorter life span. It can also affect the health of children born to overweight mothers.

We all know how difficult it can be to lose weight with diet, exercise regimes, and even medications. In fact, research shows that an obese person has an extremely low chance, less than 1%, of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight with conservative measures.

Weight loss surgery is the only proven method to provide longterm weight loss in obese patients, with sustained dramatic results compared to all medical, endoscopic, and other therapies. Weight loss surgery has been shown to eliminate or dramatically improve many medical problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, arthritis, and migraines, and has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of at least 13 types of cancer.

Surgery for weight loss is extremely safe, with very little impact on a patient’s life. The procedures are keyhole, with an overnight stay, and patients often only require a few days off work. There are many different types of weight loss procedures, and all suit different patients for a variety of reasons.

At The Surgery Gold Coast Weight Loss Surgery Clinic, we have been performing these procedures safely for over 10 years with fantastic results.

We have a very experienced team that is dedicated to your weight loss journey and long-term health.

Unlocking True Happiness: A Journey Within

In the fast-paced world we live in, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of external sources of happiness. From flashy gadgets to glamorous vacations, society often suggests that happiness lies in material possessions and fleeting experiences. But as we navigate through our 20s, 30s, and 40s, it's essential to pause and reflect: What do we truly need to be happier?

For those in their 20s, the pressure to establish a career, build relationships, and find one’s identity can be overwhelming. Do you find yourself constantly comparing your progress to others? Are you seeking validation through social media likes and followers?

Take a moment to ponder: What brings you genuine joy? Is it the accomplishments you achieve or the connections you nurture?

As we transition into our 30s, the responsibilities of adulthood often take centre stage. Balancing work, family, and personal aspirations can leave us feeling drained and unfulfilled. Ask yourself: What rejuvenates my spirit? Is it pursuing a hobby, spending quality time with loved ones, or simply taking a moment to appreciate life's small pleasures?

By the time we reach our 40s, we may find ourselves reflecting on the journey so far and contemplating what lies ahead. Have you achieved the goals you set for yourself? Are you satisfied with where you are in life? Consider this: What legacy do you wish to leave behind? Is it the wealth you accumulate or the impact you make on others?

In our quest for happiness, it's crucial to remember that true fulfillment comes from within. Rather than seeking validation or satisfaction from external sources, we must cultivate a sense of gratitude, self-awareness, and compassion. Engaging in mindfulness practices, such as meditation or journaling, can help us reconnect with our inner selves and find peace amidst life's chaos.

Ultimately, happiness is not a destination to reach but a journey to embrace. By prioritising self-care, fostering meaningful connections, and aligning our actions with our values, we can unlock the profound joy that resides within us all. So, I invite you to embark on this transformative journey and discover the abundant happiness that awaits within your soul.

Enjoy!

Stress Less:

How to Include Mindfulness in Your Everyday

Mindfulness is a bit of a buzzword these days, but the principles and benefits of it are timeless. In short, mindfulness is all about allowing yourself to experience the present moment. This might sound like an obvious and easy thing for us to do, but unfortunately, it is something that doesn’t happen naturally, and if we don’t find ways to practice and implement mindfulness into our everyday lives, it won’t happen.

To make it as easy as possible for you to bring more mindfulness into your dayto-day, here are a few of my top tips:

Start with Awareness:

Mindfulness is born out of awareness. Therefore, looking at ways to develop our awareness first and foremost makes perfect sense as a starting point. To do this, start your day by taking a minute or two to set an intention for the day ahead. This could be anything from trying to be as present as possible throughout your day. Then take a few more minutes to observe your surroundings, feel your breath, and become aware of ‘where your head is at’, as in how you feel this morning. This gentle awakening sets the stage for a mindful day.

Mindful Moments:

Transform mundane activities into mindful moments. Engage your senses as you sip your morning tea or coffee, feeling the warmth of the cup in your hands and savouring each sip. While showering or brushing your teeth, bring your attention to the different sensations these simple tasks invoke. By infusing mindfulness into these routine acts, you create a sanctuary of tranquility within your day.

Pause and Breathe:

Throughout the day, create moments of pause. When you feel overwhelmed or stressed, take a deep, conscious breath. Feel the air entering through your nose, bringing vitality and clarity to your being. Allow this ‘flow of your breathing to ground you, bringing you back to the present moment and releasing tension.

Mindful Eating:

In a fast-paced world, we often consume meals in a hurried manner, disconnected from the experience of nourishment. Practice mindful eating by engaging all your senses while having a meal. Observe the colours, textures, and aromas of your food. Chew slowly and savour each bite, appreciating the nourishment it provides. Cultivating this awareness during meals fosters gratitude for the sustenance we receive.

Engage Fully in Activities:

Whether you are just going for a walk, doing a hobby, or spending time with loved ones, try to see how present you can be. Avoid multitasking and give your undivided attention to each activity. By immersing yourself in the task at hand, you deepen your connection with the present moment. When we do this, it has a wonderful effect on our mood and wellbeing. Allowing our stress levels to lower.

Mindful Communication:

Mindful communication lies at the heart of meaningful relationships. If you know you are catching up with a friend or colleague, take a few moments to foster a present state of mind. This way, you can be fully present with the person you are meeting with. Listen attentively, offering your undivided attention. Respond consciously, speaking with kindness and compassion. Mindful communication fosters deeper connections and understanding.

Gratitude Practice:

Develop a gratitude practice to anchor your awareness of the blessings of life. At the end of each day, reflect on moments, experiences, and people for which you are grateful. This practice shifts our focus from scarcity to abundance and deepens our appreciation for the present moment.

Embracing the present moment invites us to discover the richness and beauty that exist within and around us at every moment. We have to make time to do this; otherwise, our minds will take control of our days, and our stress levels will continue to compound until we are forced to take a break and restore our energy levels. By incorporating the above practices into your everyday life, it will be easier for you to further cultivate a life filled with serenity, purpose, and joy.

How to break free from unhealthy lifestyle choices for long-term wellbeing success

A long, healthy life may ultimately be achieved through the lifestyle choices you make every single day.

This can depend on the stress you take on, the sleep you are getting, and the diet and activity decisions that you make. The truth is, that most of us will struggle in one area or another - it is almost impossible to not have stress in your life from time to time, but we can all make tweaks and put plans in place to help us get back on track when we find ourselves in these situations.

Evaluate your current situation

Sit down and evaluate where your lifestyle habits are in this present moment. What is it that is making you happy and feel positive as well as pointing out the negative impacts that are making you sluggish and ultimately setting you up for long-term health issues.

If work is stressing you out, can you outsource some of it? Can you put a new plan in place to help you mitigate the stresses, or do you just need a change. Writing this all down will help you see what you like, what isn’t working, and come up with a plan.

Goal Setting

I believe that goal setting is a very powerful and effective tool. I use the SMART goals formula when I set any goal, and that means that I make my goals Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and I put a Time limit on them. This allows me to break down my goals to make them meaningful, and it

encourages me to put a plan in place. For a bigger goal, I will often break it up into steps, to establish achievable targets. I then revisit my goals every three months to see how I am going with them, and if I need to tweak anything.

Support

Never underestimate the power of support. Finding a support network to help you reach and maintain your goals is key to changing habits and sticking by them. Whether this be your partner, family, friends or even a third party – such as the community at the gym or run club that you go to.

Resilience

I believe that resilience is another powerful tool to help you in the long run. Whilst it can be easy to write down your goals, lay out new habits in an attempt to break old ones – the reality is that sometimes things might not go the way we plan no matter how hard we try. In saying so, being resilient in these situations and allowing yourself to have some grace is important in keeping your mindset healthy. If one goal doesn’t work out within the time frame, that’s ok! Try again down the track.

The key is to just get started, commit, make a plan and that will help you overhaul your lifestyle.

5 ways to shake up your workout routine

TO IMPROVE YOUR OVERALL HEALTH

They say variety is the spice of life, and when it comes to your exercise routine, it couldn’t be more true. While it’s important to stay consistent with your fitness, doing the same movements day in and day out won’t get you the results you’re after. In fact, it could increase your risk of muscle imbalances and potential injuries, cause your gains to plateau and, put simply, leave you feeling bored and unmotivated.

That’s not to say you need to ditch your favourite workouts or exercises completely. They can form the foundation of your routine, but to keep your muscles – and your brain – guessing, it’s important to throw in some new moves. Here’s how to do it.

“ NOT ONLY WILL A YOGA OR STRETCH WORKOUT ASSIST YOUR PHYSICAL RECOVERY... IT CAN ALSO HELP SETTLE YOUR MIND ”
GET IT March 2024 16 GET IT I LIVING

TAKE A HOLISTIC APPROACH

If you want to create a well-rounded exercise routine, you need to look at fitness from all angles. According to Cameron Falloon, founder of BFT, that means incorporating strength, cardio, mobility, balance work and functional exercises into your program.

“Focusing on one style of training or modality, such as running, isn’t sustainable for the human body – if anything it causes injuries and physical stress,” explains Falloon.

Using multiple modalities leads to better overall fitness. Not to mention it keeps things interesting and you never have to do the same workout twice! “By getting variety in exercise we are able to emulate the things we do in everyday life, helping us move better and stay stronger as we age,” Falloon adds.

UP THE INTENSITY

Still smashing out the same number of reps with the same weights you used at the very beginning of your fitness journey? It’s time to challenge yourself. Once you feel comfortable with a certain weight, rep count or distance, increase it. Don’t go too hard, too soon – you can do it gradually over a few weeks. You can also try what Falloon calls a “progressive training block”. By alternating between cardio and strength workouts and targeting either your upper or lower body each workout, you can be sure every muscle, fascial plane and energy system will be targeted and strengthened.

GET INTO NATURE

You may love your home gym or workout studio, but taking your fitness outside has proven benefits you just can’t get within four walls. Studies show that working out in nature not only increases your physical activity levels, it can also decrease your level of perceived exertion. Move your workout to the water and you’ll also enjoy a reduction in stress and anxiety.

“Outdoor workouts like stand-up paddle boarding are a full sensory experience,” explains Vikki Weston, founder of She SUPs.

WORK ON YOUR FLEXIBILITY

When it comes to upping your health and fitness, flexibility – in both the physical and mental sense – is key. You may love jogging 10k every day before work, but if you really want to power your runs, you’ll need to add in resistance workouts to strengthen your muscles and level up your reaction times. Consider yourself a weapon in the weights room? Treat your cardiovascular system to a HIIT session. Have the balance of strength and cardio down pat? Take the Flow Athletic approach and add in some yoga.

According to co-founder Ben Lucas, for every strength workout you do, you should add in a cardio session, and for every one of those, you should add in a yoga or stretching class. Not only will a yoga or stretch workout assist your physical recovery (a vital part of improving your performance), it can also help settle your mind. “I swear by having a balanced approach to my training,” says Ben. “In fact, my whole business was founded on this philosophy. Previously I set myself a challenge to run 35 marathons in the space of five years, I was really struggling with recovery so a friend recommended I start doing yoga. Adding yoga into my week improved my running time, improved my sleep and recovery. I am a huge believer that balance is the key to getting results.

“The sight and sound of water is scientifically proven to help lower cortisol. Combine that with the meditative rhythm of your paddle stroking the water when you’re paddle boarding, and you have an incredible mindful low-impact workout that helps strengthen your entire body while also supporting your mind,” says Weston.

“One of the main areas working hard when you paddle a stand-up paddleboard is of course your core, as you attempt to stabilise on an uneven surface (the water).

“However, being out in nature on a body of water, you can also experience a truly dynamic and often unexpected workout in ALL areas of your body.

“From increasing swell to change in wind direction, as you adapt and tweak your stroke or position to suit the conditions you find yourself in, every muscle group is doing their bit to help power you forward. From the micro muscles in your feet, all the way up to your shoulders and arms, resulting in a truly dynamic full body workout.”

KEEP IT HOT

If you’ve been skipping workouts because you’re bored or tired of not seeing results, crank up the heat. Exercising in elevated temperatures won’t only put your cardio fitness to the test, it’ll also increase your circulation and up your flexibility. Before you dial up your air conditioner, though, we’re talking about infrared heat.

At the end of the day, as long as you’re mixing things up and challenging yourself, you will see results – it's just a matter of time.

WHY YOU NEED TO

Put Yourself First

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to focus entirely on your responsibilities — including caring for others — leaving you on the back burner. If you’re constantly prioritising other people, it’s time to take a step back and remember that you deserve some TLC, too.

Why is it so hard?

There are many reasons why it’s challenging to put yourself first. Our culture for one. If you were surrounded by people telling you taking breaks means laziness or true love means always saying yes, you’ll likely feel pressured to ignore your own needs.

Self-discipline, lack of motivation or not knowing how to seek help can also be barriers. You might also perceive the act as selfish, which runs contrary to the essence of prioritising oneself.

But here’s why you should.

Maybe you’re a parent who must put your children’s needs before your own or the eldest child expected to carry the responsibilities at home. No matter where you are in life right now, here are reasons why you should put yourself first this year.

1

You Risk Burnout

When you constantly put other people’s needs above your own, you can drain yourself of energy. You do things like helping a co-worker or doing a favour for your sibling because you feel like you should, leaving you hopeless and exhausted. Show kindness to yourself first so you can show up fully for your loved ones.

2

Your Stress Can Impact Those Around You

When was the last time you checked in with yourself and made time for your passion?

Occupying yourself with responsibilities can lead to a lifestyle where stress becomes normal. If not addressed, it can affect your health and your relationships with others.

3

You May Lose Yourself in the Process

Do you feel like you must be productive all the time? Ask yourself — are you doing it out of necessity or because your inner critic dictates you should achieve goals to be deemed perfect, worthy, and acceptable? It’s time to overcome those internal narratives that may impede your growth.

This Year

HOW TO START PUTTING YOURSELF FIRST

While change won’t happen overnight, you can start small through these simple acts.

Pay Attention to Your Lifestyle

Your health is an essential foundation for living a fulfilling life, and it partially stems from a healthy diet and exercise. Start gradually with 15-minute morning walks. As for your meals, slowly add seafood to your recipes.

“2024 WILL BE YOUR YEAR!”

Set Boundaries

Think about the people in your life and how you feel around them. If some tend to make you think negatively or ask for everything but don’t help you when you need it, evaluate if those connections are worth working on. Speak up when you’re uncomfortable, in a way that gets the message across but doesn’t hurt the other person’s feelings.

Do Daily Self-Checks

Staying attuned to your thoughts and feelings can help foster self-love and mindfulness. Start by doing a quick body scan, checking how you stand and feel. Ask yourself how you feel. If you do this in the morning, you can also ask yourself what you’re looking forward to — if practising before sleep, reflect on the good things that happened.

Commit to Self-Improvement

Start your journey towards self-care with a growth mindset. By listing the activities you want to achieve, knowledge to learn and books to read, you commit to improving how you perceive self-care this year.

Make Yourself a Priority

Putting your well-being first will take practice. However, the more you do it, the easier it will be to perform daily. Remember — 2024 will be your year!

Nurturing Mental Wellness AFTER A FAMILY LAW SEPARATION

Going through a family law separation is undeniably one of life's most challenging experiences. It's a time fraught with emotional turmoil, legal complexities, and significant life adjustments. Amidst the legal proceedings, changes in parenting arrangements, and division of assets, it's crucial not to overlook the profound impact such upheavals can have on mental health. However, there are steps individuals can take to navigate this difficult period and foster their mental well-being.

First and foremost, it's essential to acknowledge one's emotions. Separation often brings forth a whirlwind of feelings, including grief, anger, guilt, and uncertainty. These emotions are entirely natural responses to loss and change. Seeking support from friends, family, or preferably a counsellor, psychologist, or other suitably qualified professional can assist. Professionals specialising in divorce or family counselling can provide invaluable guidance and coping strategies tailored to individual needs. Joining support groups or online forums can also offer a sense of solidarity and understanding from others who have experienced similar challenges.

Self-care practices play a crucial role in promoting mental wellness during this time. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can serve as a much-needed respite from the stress of legal proceedings and emotional upheaval. Whether it's practicing mindfulness, exercising, spending time in nature, or pursuing hobbies, carving out moments for self-nurturing is essential for maintaining equilibrium.

It is essential to approach the separation process with a focus on self-empowerment and personal growth. Viewing challenges as opportunities for learning and resilience can help individuals navigate the journey with greater strength and resilience. Setting realistic goals, celebrating small victories, and cultivating a sense of optimism about the future can foster a mindset of hope and possibility.

Practicing forgiveness, both towards oneself and towards former partners, is a transformative step towards healing. Holding onto resentment and bitterness only perpetuates suffering, while forgiveness liberates individuals from the emotional shackles of the past. It's a process that takes time and effort but can lead to profound emotional liberation and inner peace.

Finally, maintaining a sense of perspective is crucial. While the process of separation may feel all-encompassing in the present moment, it's important to remember that it is just one chapter in the larger story of one's life. By focusing on personal growth,

nurturing relationships, and embracing new opportunities, individuals can emerge from this challenging period with newfound strength, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of life.

In conclusion, while navigating a family law separation can undoubtedly be a daunting and emotionally taxing experience, it's essential to prioritise mental health and well-being throughout the process. By acknowledging and processing emotions, fostering open communication, practicing self-care, seeking professional support, cultivating forgiveness, and maintaining perspective, individuals can embark on a journey of healing, growth, and ultimately, reclaiming their inner peace and happiness.

The Vision Difference

There are a lot of health and fitness programmes out there today that promise you success, but how can you be sure of that success? Let’s dive in today to see how we actually guarantee your results at Vision Personal Training.

MONEY BACK GUARANTEE

A money-back results guarantee is a big claim, especially considering no one person can be monitored around the clock with every single little action they take.

However, to achieve this guarantee (and more importantly, actual results) at Vision, we have created a system that allows us to have absolute clarity around what needs to be done to obtain your desired result and what steps we need to take daily and weekly to reach that result in a specific timeframe.

WEEKLY REPORT

We call it the ‘Weekly Report’, and it’s implemented from day one of your journey. Your very first session at Vision with your Results Coach is a goal-setting and planning session where you’ll determine your goal, exercise habits needed to reach that goal, and nutrition habits that need to be implemented.

You’ll then undertake a nutritional education session with your Results Coach to clearly define your eating plans, habits, and strategies and receive further education around how best to optimise your eating.

While training 2-3 times weekly, your Results Coach will complete the Weekly Report with you in one of those sessions on the same day of the week, ensuring consistency.

The Weekly Report is a summary of all the actions and habits you mapped out in your first planning session. The discussion with your coach will ensure you’re ticking all the boxes and coming up with better strategies if you’re falling short in any area. This includes exercise volume and intensity, eating habits, alcohol habits, sleep patterns, daily step targets, as well as current confidence and importance levels towards your goal.

This weekly progress update allows you to stay motivated, stay on track, and keep the bigger picture more realistic to achieve as we break it down into more manageable chunks.

Love Should Never Hurt

Discover Amanda Giblin, Fierce Females Founder

While her career in martial arts has seen her wear several hats, including that of a worldwide stunt woman, she's most proud of her latest role as the founder of Fierce Females, a self-defence and empowerment charity created exclusively for women. Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter sat down with Amanda to talk about resilience, trusting your gut, and the steps women can take right now to develop their safety and strength, both physically and mentally.

GET IT I PROFILE GET IT March 2024 24
Amanda Giblin, Fierce Females founder

How did you first launch Fierce Females, and why?

I’d been teaching martial arts for a long time, and like all my colleagues, I had lived experience as a survivor. Both during and after my own experience of violence within a relationship, I kept asking myself the same questions: ‘How did this happen?

I’m a trained martial arts fighter. I’m strong, so how did I get here?’

I began working closely with a psychologist to understand all of the concepts that go into this kind of relationship dynamic and how things escalate to the point of violence.

I wondered why this wasn’t taught in schools. Through a martial arts lens, we are taught what to do once violence has commenced, but there is so much going on before it reaches this point, and that’s where I knew I needed to start my own charity.

How do you work with your clients, and what are your core teaching pillars?

Gender-based violence and intimate partner violence are always complex.

I knew that teaching women the physical aspects of self-defence was essential, but it’s irrelevant because women freeze in the moment, so there’s a mental training and education piece that’s critical; you can’t have one without the other.

Every client is unique, so we tailor our training and support to what they need, but it always balances mental and physical strength and resilience. We’ve partnered with a psychologist, so we discuss things like coercive control, early warning signs, and even love bombing. When we pull out to a more macro view, we look at value systems for women that can control us: Pretty, Polite, and perfect—the triple P that often stops us from acting when we need to.

We work closely with domestic violence referral centres and shelters; we want to catch them before something happens again or before it happens at all. The programme itself is huge, with over 200 subjects, so we completely customise –we even have clients who are dealing with bullying in school or the workplace, or inter-family violence, not only romantic relationships.

We even discuss topics like girl-on-girl violence and control; we want everyone to be informed to be better friends, better supporters, and even better bystanders if we see a situation unfold.

Tell us about the space and how important a female-exclusive environment is for the work you do.

As a trainer and assessor, I knew we needed a place run by women, for women. For anyone coming from an abuse situation, walking into a male-dominated gym or dojo to learn to defend themselves wouldn’t be appropriate. We tap into these core skills in a female space, with female coaches who are trauma-informed, and wrap these learnings around concepts like neurobiology and how our brain behaves when scared.

We’re a small team and are trying to expand. As a charity, this all comes down to funding and grants. We can sometimes help thousands of women in one shelter over six months, taking 12–24 women per session.

What’s one of the most common themes you see your clients grapple with when they first come to you?

Women are often trying to not be “hysterical” or come across as rude, so they accept treatment or deny red flags and doubt themselves. This is something we often see and say: the red flag on that first or second date will end up being the reason for the breakup in the end. Don’t bury that feeling; lean into your intuition and trust yourself always.

How can our readers support the work you do?

On our website we have a donate tab, which helps us grow and support more women. Outside of this, spreading the word and volunteering in any skill set, even accounting or marketing. We’re so excited to do more; we have big plans and huge goals, and we want women across Australia to have these tools, skills, and essential knowledge.

Take Action Today: Amanda’s Top 4 Tips

1 Check out our Fierce Females online programme; it’s funded by the QLD Government, and you can access this self-directed learning anywhere. It’s a great resource.

2 The biggest factor is to trust your gut! If it feels wrong, it is wrong, so take action.

3 Know that when setting boundaries, even something as small as “I don’t want to discuss this topic” is your right.

4 We’re located in Westfield Helensvale; come and see us; we will always find a way to help. Even if we need to work out the details later, we will find a way to assist you immediately or refer you on to someone who can.

What is a common misconception about self-defence?

People assume it’s just about us teaching you to punch and kick; it’s so much more than that. There’s also a misconception that if a woman defends herself, the male abuser will hurt her more; this is not the case. We teach to diffuse, de-escalate, escape, and avoid. We aren’t teaching women to stay and fight; we want them to create enough space to run and get somewhere safe. We all deserve a life free from violence.

A visit to the sleepy, yet stunning coastal town of Yamba is always a good idea. We travelled to the Northern Rivers for 48 hours of sand, sunshine, and a seriously stylish stay.

Yamba

A Hidden Gem

Yamba may be the quiet and peaceful member of the family of beachfront towns strung along the northern NSW coastline, yet there’s nothing unassuming about this small inlet. If Byron Bay is known as the older, flashier, slightly jaded sister, Yamba is the younger, shyer one, consistently treating visitors to its natural beauty in an unassuming way. Despite the extensive promotion of Yamba during recent years, as the “next Byron Bay”, the oceanside jewel on the Northern Rivers continues to remain loyal to its small-town roots, all while delivering world class food, beaches and, with the opening of boutique hotel The Surf Yamba, impressive accommodation.

The stucco white building that The Surf Yamba calls home could appear imposing, yet its edges are softened into undulating curves, as though the ocean has smoothed out any angles and hardness, leaving a welcoming space as delicious as an icecream after a hot summer’s day.

As we arrive, the blue green of the Pacific Ocean glinting a welcome to our left, the Palm Springs vibe of the hotel promises us two days of relaxation and luxury. And it doesn’t disappoint. Hotelier Gary Snodgrass is friendly, helpful, and rightly proud of his role within this beautiful boutique hotel. His enthusiasm is catching as he shows us to the rooftop terrace, complete with plunge pool and lounges, which give us a wonderfully sheltered view over the Main Beach. Down the corridor is ‘Pippi Terrace’,

the hotel’s clubhouse, complete with tea, coffee, choc chip cookies, fruit and, most importantly, a bar fridge for your wine and glasses for the regular cocktail hours he hosts. The focus here is on fun, sun, and making the most of the beautiful hotel and its fortunate surrounds. He is also extremely helpful, offering us surfboards to borrow, electric bikes to ride, umbrellas, beach chairs, and, when our car battery inexplicably died, gave us a jump start –all with a friendly and relaxed smile.

He shows us to our room, the undulating, curved lines leading us to feel as though we’re on an ocean liner. Created by Design King Company, their brief was nautical meets art deco, with the result a charming and timeless space that adds to your overall experience of endless summer days, when the sun always shone, and the water was always the ideal temperature. Our room is a confection of blush pinks and neutrals, with natural timber and Italian terrazzo tiles in the curved, cave-like bathroom, complete with Leif’s botanical inspired toiletries and Bemboka linen bathrobes. The colour palette compliments, not competes, with the breathtaking views we can see from the bedroom and the balcony. The overall effect is tasteful, stylish, and calming with the curated artwork and bespoke furniture all quietly whispering of understated luxury. All rooms have outdoor spaces complete with views too, whether it’s Main Beach, south towards Evans Head or the grey-blue mountains in the west.

Gary has thoughtfully ordered a cheese platter, which groans with goodness. Within five minutes our swimmers are on, wine bottle uncorked, and the local delicacies are enjoyed. We’re officially in holiday mode and it’s time to leave our everyday stresses behind.

Because it’s difficult to feel stressed when you have the natural relaxant of Mother Nature’s abundance right at your feet. And right at your feet it is. Directly in front of the hotel is Main Beach, perfect for families, with its sheltered, uncrowded beaches, café, patrolled surf and even an ocean pool, now emerged from its renovations. If you do decide you want to explore other swimming options, don’t miss Pippi’s beach. A long, windswept golden arc, it’s the ideal place to settle in under your umbrella for a day of complete relaxation. There’s also Angourie

with its picturesque water holes and deserted beaches. Perfect for surfers you’re almost guaranteed a glimpse of dolphins here, so set the alarm and wake up with the sun for the perfect start to your day. The hotel also offers yoga and Pilates classes on its rooftop if you prefer to begin your day with some pure Zen.

We secured our position on the Main Beach and spent the day reading, relaxing, and watching the waves. While my husband hit the surf, I headed into town for a facial at Melt. Here too the service was five-star but relaxed and comfortable. Afterwards, I looked and felt as though I’d already had a week’s holiday. We joined Gary for a sunset drink on the rooftop and gave our thanks to the setting sun for delivering a day of sublime joy.

As the sun set, it was time to turn our attention to dinner. Gary recommended several restaurants in town, just a fiveminute walk down the hill. We choose to dine at the newest eatery, El Ocaso, with its rooftop location and outdoor balcony promising us a ringside view of the sunset. Gary’s praise of its cocktail menu is all we need to be convinced. Wandering along Coldstream Street, amongst breezy cafes, cute homeware shops, clothing stores and a craft brewery, is the hidden marvel, El Ocaso. Ascending the stairs to sit on El Caso’s rooftop dining space is like stepping from New South Wales into a Roman side street at sunset or stumbling off Barcelona’s La Ramblas. The dishes are predominantly Italian with hints of Spain and other Mediterranean delights. We opened with a cocktail – a raunchy chilli Margueritta each, which wakes us up after our day of lazing in the sun. The centrepiece of our shared plates was the Rotolo – pasta stuffed with spinach and ricotta then baked by owner-chef and drizzled with roasted almond flakes and olive oil. Sided with Arancini balls and carpaccio beef – all delicately presented for a discernible essence of the home country. The atmosphere was a perfect blend of lively Mediterranean family get-together and sunglasses-on cool – all curated by the owner-maître d’. The tiramisu we shared was straight out of Tuscany, putting the seal of authenticity on our meal as the sun dipped below the horizon.

As we walked up the hill back to The Surf Yamba the gentle laughter from the beachside apartments and neighbouring restaurants drifted over us, we were convinced: Yamba may no longer be as sleepy and shy as it once was, but it’s still the friendliest town of them all.

How to get there

The Surf Yamba is just two hours south from the Gold Coast. Situated on the Clarence River, there’s plenty for the whole family to do. Rent a boat for a day of fishing, dolphin spotting and island hopping. Pull up next to the riverside pub for lunch, before returning to the water to catch your evening meal. The Yamba Bowls club also offers great family meals and live music. To book a stay at The Surf Yamba visit thesurfyamba. com.au for more details.

Easter

The Easter Bunny is on his way, and his bringing some delicious recipes for the cooler months. Here are just a few of his favourites.

treats

Maple and Cinnamon Easter Bunny Brioche

Ingredients:

• 1 1/3 cups strong bread flour

• 1/3 cup maple sugar

• 1 3/4 tsp salt

• 1 sachet of dry instant yeast

• 3 eggs, plus 1 egg for egg wash

• 3/4 cup + 3 tsp unsalted butter, cubed and softened

• 3/4 cup milk

• dried fruits (we used sultanas, apricots and pecans)

• 1 tsp cinnamon

• 4 tbsp pure maple syrup (preferably amber for its rich taste) to decorate

• large handful of maple flakes to decorate

Method:

1. Place all the ingredients in a stand mixer bowl apart from the butter.

2. Use a dough hook to mix everything together. Use the lowest speed for two minutes and start gradually adding the softened butter, then increase to a medium speed for five minutes while gradually adding the remaining butter.

3. The dough should now be very soft, scrape down the sides of the bowl to remove any excess, then move the dough to a larger bowl, cover with a tea towel and chill for at least 4 hours.

4. Transfer to a lightly floured work surface. Knead the dough and then cut into eight 4-ounce pieces. Roll one piece with the flats of your hands into a 12-inch rope.

5. Do a twist with the dough to make a bunny or design any other shape.

6. Repeat to form remaining bunnies; you will use 2 lined baking sheets for 8 bunnies. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and prove in a warm spot for 15 minutes, until almost doubled in size.

7. Preheat the oven to 200°C.

8. Beat egg to make egg wash.

9. Remove plastic wrap from the baking sheets and brush dough with egg wash.

10. Bake in the centre of the oven until beautifully browned for 12–15 minutes.

11. Carefully remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool.

12. Brush the bunnies with maple syrup and sprinkle maple flakes onto the tails.

• 3 tbsp olive oil

• 1 brown onion, chopped

• 1 tin of chopped tomatoes

• 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp ground cumin

Maple Lamb Shanks with Giant Coucous

Method:

1. Mix the coriander, cumin, paprika and cinnamon in a bowl.

2. Separately, put the olive oil into a casserole dish on a medium heat.

3. When the oil is hot, add the spice mix and fry for 1–2 minutes.

4. Add the lamb shanks to the pan, making sure the shanks are coated with the spices while browning the meat.

5. After the lamb shanks are nice and brown, add the tin of tomatoes, onion and garlic and cook for 2–3 minutes.

6. Add the chicken stock to the pan, making sure the lamb shanks are largely covered, and bring it to a boil.

7. Add the salt and pure maple syrup to the pot, cover the pan with the lid and reduce the heat to let it simmer for 30 minutes.

8. After 30 minutes, adjust the seasoning to your preference.

9. Let the lamb continue to cook for another 2 1/2 hours, turning the lamb shanks over every 30 minutes.

10. Then, add the peppers and fresh tomatoes to the lamb and continue to cook for another 30 minutes. The meat should be almost falling off the bones.

11. Meanwhile, put the couscous in a large bowl and cover with the sauce from the lamb. The liquid should cover the couscous.

12. Cover the bowl with the lid from the pot for about 15 minutes. This will allow the couscous to soak up all the flavours.

13. Uncover the bowl and fluff the couscous up with a fork.

14. Put the couscous onto a big platter and dish out the lamb shanks and the vegetables on top of the couscous.

15. Pour any remaining sauce over the dish.

Doctors

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but according to one doctor, that doesn’t mean you have to eat them.

According to Dr Vincent, known for his groundbreaking work with apple research, when applied to the face, apples can help to activate skin renewal, tone the skin, treat pimples, acne and dry lips and also remove dark circles around the eyes.

Apples offer some surprising benefits for both internal health and external beauty. He says incorporating apples into the daily beauty routine could be the key to a youthful glow.

“While the old adage, an apple a day will keep the doctor away is very true, an apple on your face a day will keep old age away, is also one of the most unknown benefits of apples,” Dr Vincent said.

Here are a few reasons why:

• Apples are rich in phenolic antioxidants which can combat signs of aging and rejuvenate your skin.

• While nourishing the body from within, apples can also nourish the skin as topical treatments.

• From diminishing dark circles with chilled apple slices to using apple cider vinegar as a natural facial toner, to using apple pulp for dry lips – apples are highly versatile.

• Natural apple treatments made at home can invigorate and tone the skin, encouraging skin renewal and improved health.

“Apples are so much more than a crunchy treat; they include health enhancing benefits that need to be enjoyed the world over. We grow the best apples right here in Australia, so we should be taking advantage of this super food, as a food, a supplement and a skin care product,” he said.

So, get to your local supermarket, despite the rising cost of groceries, a bunch of apples might be the most inexpensive aspect of your beauty routine.

Starting Over in Your 40s:

Create a Thriving Second Act on the Gold Coast!

Hi ladies! Let's be honest; life doesn't always go according to plan. After 18 years of marriage, two beautiful kids, and a successful career in business management, my world flipped upside down with a divorce. Suddenly, I was in my 40s, single, and staring down a fresh start. Now, I'm not going to sugarcoat it; it was scary. But guess what? It was also the most liberating and empowering experience of my life.

Here's the thing: we often think our prime is behind us by our mid-40s. But trust me, that's just societal BS! As women, we're resilient, resourceful, and packed with life experience. We know what we want, what we don't want, and most importantly, we know ourselves. So, if you're feeling that entrepreneurial itch or like it's time to rewrite your career story, listen up! Today, I'm sharing my top three tips for an amazing start to your business life in 2024, right here on the sunshine-soaked Gold Coast:

1.

Find Your Vision, Own Your Power:

This isn't just about some airy-fairy dream board. What truly moves you? What problem are you uniquely positioned to solve? Grab a pen, a good glass of bubbles (because why not?) and get clear on your "why." Now, visualise it! Draw a mind map, a vision board, whatever works for you. See yourself thriving, confident, and making a difference. Remember, visualising success is half the battle won.

2. Plan Like a Pro, Execute Like a Boss: Passion is fuel, but a solid plan is your roadmap. Research your industry, identify your target audience, and create a budget that respects your reality. Then, break down your goals into small, achievable steps. Think weekly wins, not just mountaintop victories. And remember, flexibility is key. Be ready to adapt and pivot as you learn and grow.

Starting over at any age can be daunting, but it can also be the most incredible adventure. With a clear vision, a solid plan, and the support of amazing women like you, the Gold Coast is your oyster. Remember, it's never too late to rewrite your story and create a business life that balances feeling good and doing well. Now go out there, claim your power, and shine bright!

3. Build Your Tribe, Boss Style: No woman is an island, right?! We thrive in supportive communities. Connect with other female entrepreneurs on the Gold Coast; there are amazing networking events, co-working spaces, and online forums just waiting for you. Find your tribe, share your challenges, celebrate your wins, and inspire each other. Trust me, the power of like-minded women on a mission is unstoppable!
