THE QUEST

The St. Joseph’s Academy Volleyball Team Has Their Sights Set On A State Championship. Before the 2010 girl’s volleyball season even started, St. Joseph’s Academy knew that every team in the state, if not the nation, would be circling their schedules for their dates against the Angels. While this is a not so uncommon dilemma for the St. Joseph’s when it 4

comes to girl’s volleyball, the season became much more interesting when the Angels were ranked #1 in the nation according to PrepVolleyball. com “It puts a big target on your back,” St. Joseph’s Academy head coach Karen Davis said. “Everybody brings their

best game against us. We try not to dwell on that pressure and take it one game at a time.” The Angels return five seniors from last year’s squad that went 29-8-2 overall with a fourth place finish at the Missouri Class 4 state championships.

“We’re more experienced and offensively we’re stronger,’ Davis said. “We’re much more well rounded this year with a good balance on offense.” Senior outside hitter Helen Boyle returns as one of top players from last year’s SEE VOLLEYBALL

DEFENDING THE TITLE CADETS LOOK TO REKINDLE MAGIC FROM 2009 SEASON When CBC defeated Saint Louis University High 1-0 to win last year’s Missouri Class 3 Boy’s Soccer Championship, it marked the seventh time that the Cadets have brought home a state title and the sixth under head coach Terry Michler. Yet with the 2010 season in full swing, the big question that everyone has is, “Does CBC have what it takes to win back-to-back championships?” “The experience that we 6

bring back from last year is really important, but we just don’t seem to be putting it quite together yet,” Michler said. “We play well in stretches, but we’re not getting goals and then we have a lapse and we give up a goal, so we’re playing kind of like an inexperienced team than an experienced team. It’s a little frustrating, but like I told the boys, it’s just September, so we’ve got a lot of time to work through it.” The Cadets return a total of

five starters from last year’s team that went 26-4-3. Junior Justin Bilyeu returns this season as CBC’s leading offensive threat this season after racking up five goals and six assists last year. “Really smooth and highly skilled player that’s deadly accurate with his passes,” Michler said. “He’s the type of player that can score from a distance for us.” Kyle Malle is another solid threat on offense this season as the senior midfielder/for-

ward scored four goals and three assists last season. “Kyle’s primarily an attacking player that likes to take people on and get the ball into the attacking end and get a cross or a shot in,” Michler said. “He reads the game really well and has good offensive instincts with the ball.” Senior A.J. Cochran is a solid defender that scored one goal and one assist last season. “Cochran’s a big strong kid that dominates in the air,” Miwww.getinthegamestl.com

chler said. “He’s very good defensively and where he’s improved is that he reads the game better and positions himself better so that he can intercepting the ball instead of having to tackle someone.” Senior Matt Clarkin is a midfielder that has established himself as one of the catalysts to the Cadet offense this season. “He’s kind of like the team quarterback because he’s very good at setting the tempo in the game and he’s good at hitting the right player at the right time during the game,” Michler said. “He’s really the engine of our team in terms of our offensive ability to play and go forward and be dangerous.” Senior Mike Lee is known as being a stout defender for CBC and the senior’s experi-

ence as a starter should shine though this year. “Solid defensive type player that’s good at shutting a guy down and putting the ball back into play for us,” Michler said. “He gives us a lot of strength and experience on the wing.” So what do the Cadets need to do in order to have success in the 2010 Class 3 playoffs, it’s pretty simple according to their head coach. “Bottom line is that we need to score when we get good chances,” Michler said. “There’s always that pressure and expectations from last season and you’ve just got to let that go because it’s a whole new year and nobody really cares. Other teams use it to play harder against you in order to beat you and I think we’ve gotten caught up in that a bit.”

said. “She has a way of always finding the holes.” Senior Krista Menghini moves from the setter position to defensive specialist for the 2010 campaign. Last season she led the Angels with 832 assists. “Krista’s playing a defensive role for us this year,” Davis said. “She’s a very calm player and has been doing a really nice job for us.” Emily Jaeger is another senior defensive specialist who recorded a total of 211 digs last season. “Emily’s a steady player that brings a lot of experience to the court,” Davis said. “She also just a fabulous kid to have on the team.” While it’s clear that Angels return a lot of experienced players from last year’s squad, Davis believes that they need to accomplish just two goals in order to stay in the hunt for a state championship. “We just need to play good volleyball and stay drama free,” Davis said.

squad as she led the Angels with 420 kills, 311 digs and 44 aces. “Helen’s a four year varsity starter and is very good on offense and defense,” Davis said. “She someone who has gr-eat volleyball knowledge and just has a high volleyball IQ.” Senior Taylor Masterson returns at middle blocker after leading St. Joseph’s last season with 128 blocks while also racking up 271 kills. “Taylor’s a very powerful player and is such a naturally strong person,” Davis said. “She also brings that comedy to the team that every team needs.” Kat McGrath is another senior middle blocker who brings a lot of experience to the court for the Angels. Last season she recorded 125 kills as well as 27 blocks. “Kat is a very steady player that does not make a lot of mistakes on the court,” Davis www.getinthegamestl.com
