Introduction to GETA (Freshmen)

"In January, the freshman class have started revisiting their first project to improve it from their first iteration, creating airfoils, and doing The Angle of Attack to learn about different types of degrees that the box fan can push to make their airfoils lift higher. At the beginning of the year, the freshman recreated their first project in the class, the Scale Model of an Inch. The Scale Model of an Inch was the freshman's first project of their school year, and this time around, they tried to make the cuts and placements as perfect as possible while improving from their first design. Another thing the freshmen did early on in the year was a presentation about motors, generators, electromagnets, how electricity travels from a generator to our homes, and Fleming's Right Hand Rule. This was an introduction to motion and its ties with speed and current. Finally, the freshmen did the Angle of Attack lab. During The Angle of Attack lab, the freshmen had an airfoil attached to a stick that can swing from a block that has space to let the airfoil move. After setting the airfoil up, they had a box fan blowing at the airfoil, and the freshmen had to measure how high it would go from different angles of measurement." PATRICK DAVIS 02

GETA I (Sophomores)

'This past month, GETA I have been working on making a miniature wind turbine. First, we made basic ones that track the wind. Now, we are using the engineering design process to make another wind turbine to see which one is the most important factoring in how many paper clips and how fast it can pull them up." NICHOLAS INONG

"In the past month, GETA I students have begun working on mini turbine models that are the predecessors to a future project we will do. There will be a competition at the end of this project, where the turbines will be tested to hold up and wind up the most amount of paper clips. Mr. Johnson gave us instructions for the first phase of the Engineering Design Process for this project. In Phase Two, students are supposed to design two new rotors (a hub and blades) and two new winding mechanisms while providing two pros and two cons for each turbine model." IVAN HUANG 03

GETA II (Juniors)

"Solar Boat Description: 8 students from the Junior class volunteered to be on GETA's "Solar Boat Team," which will compete in 3 different races: Endurance, Slalom, & Sprint. They must also make and perform a presentation that will be displayed to representatives from SMUD, who have thoughtfully provided our school with the opportunity to participate in this competition. What we have learned: So far, the Boat team has been studying fundamental California boating law to obtain their boating license, which is needed to be on the team, while also starting to look into the specific rules and regulations they must adhere by in order to participate in the competition. Solar Go-Karts Description: The GETA II Junior class for their 2nd semester will be working on planning, designing, building, racing, and improving upon their own "Solar Go-Karts" using materials and techniques that were provided by GETA. What we have learned: So far, students have been learning to properly plan and design their team's Go-Kart models, and have also started to learn some of the essential circuitry required for the Kart to operate." JOAQUIN CRANMORE-SANCHEZ 04

GETA III (Seniors)

This month in GETA, we have been working a lot of things. We have been working on OSHA to learn more about the importance of safety in any workplace. Another big thing we have been working on is our senior projects. We could create anything of our choosing and need to submit plans to Mr. Johnson. Also, we have been working on job shadows. This is to take the opportunity to look into a career that you have particular interest in. JONATHAN CRUZ

Over the course of this past month, the senior class has been continuing to grow their knowledge and understanding of workforce rules, safety, and etiquette through the OSHA certification program. Through an online course provided by CareerSafe, seniors such as myself have learned about the guidelines and restrictions set in place through OSHA regulations, along with the various applications of them. These lessons will hopefully prepare us for jobs in the workforce, and keep us from unwittingly harming ourselves wherever we may go. AARON GEE 05
