In his speech, Secretary Pascual said “Together we want to live a secure and comfortable life. Beyond the Filipinos’ wishes for their own families, their vision for the country is collective prosperity and justice for all. Their vision of prosperity is rooted in a keen awareness of poverty and its harshness.”

With this year’s theme of “Creating the Future We Need: Striking a Path During a Period of Transition,” LCF stressed the corporate and civil society sectors’ greater role in creating an ideal future for the Filipinos.

The Expo also emphasized the need to work together in creating collaborative efforts that have long-lasting impacts on society, noting that the League should move in the same right direction not only for itself or as a corporation and foundation, but even more so for the country.

Sec. Pascual highlighted the country’s civil society, calling it a vibrant sector as it goes way back in terms of experience in designing and implementing programs that fight poverty. He also encouraged companies to learn from the experience of civil society in making CSR programs work, and in directing efforts toward where help is needed most. Likewise, he cited the creativity of the private sector that would help companies to integrate social responsibility into their main line of business.

Philippine Postal clarifies delivery of PhilSys IDs THE Philippine Postal Corporation (Post Office) announced that they have delivered the PhilSys IDs turned-over for dispatch to their intended recipients and at the same time clarified issues in the delivery of the said cards.

“Staying true to our mandate to deliver efficient, competitive and on-time delivery of goods and services, we would also like to clarify some issues and be given a chance to answer. So ngayon ang tanong, ang sabi- hindi pa raw nila natatanggap yung IDs nila dahil hindi pa namin nadedeliver (now the question is, they said, they haven’t received their IDs because we didn’t deliver it)”, Postmaster General Norman Fulgencio said.

“There is a way wherein you can verify or check your PhilSys ID. We have a post office website where you can track your IDs. If the result is, NOT FOUND, ibig sabihin noon, hindi pa narereceive ng Post Office ang mga ID (mean-

ing, the PhilSys ID has not been received by the Post Office).”. Wala po sa amin ang problema, yun po ang malinaw dun (The problem is not with the Post Office, let us be clear about it)”, Postmaster General Norman Fulgencio said.

He added, “The Post Office has delivered more than 13.7 million PhilSys ID’s nationwide which is equivalent to 94% of the 14.5 million ID cards turned-over for dispatch as of June 30, 2022.

“Only six percent (6%) or 774,650 ID cards are ongoing or being delivered by the Post Office in far flung areas of the country. We presumed that some of them have already received their IDs as of the moment”, Fulgencio said.

BSP advises retailers, banks to accept folded polymer banknotes MANILA -- The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) informs the public that folded banknotes, whether paper or polymer, can still be circulated and accepted for payment.

As such, retailers and banks should accept them for day-today payment transactions.

Recently, the BSP issued guidelines on the proper handling of polymer banknotes. This includes storing banknotes in wallets where they fit properly (the typical bi fold wallet fits this criteria), keeping them clean, and using them as payment for goods and services.

The BSP stresses that the above guidelines apply to both paper and polymer banknote. The handling guidelines were issued to raise public awareness on the proper use of

polymer and paper banknotes to safeguard their integrity and prolong their lifespan.

If an individual is doubtful on the value and/or authenticity of a banknote, he or she is encouraged to go to any bank for assistance. The bank will then refer the banknote to the BSP for examination. (BSP)

He also cited practices in the City of Mandaluyong that can be injected and emulated to improve the Department’s anti-illegal drugs campaign, such as the hiring of personnel solely dedicated to ac-

companying law enforcers in anti-illegal drug operations to stand as witnesses in court and to augment the building up of cases against drug suspects.

“These are the kind of practices na gagawin natin at hihingin ko sa mga gobernador, sa mga mayor ng Pilipinas,” Abalos said.

The newly-installed DILG Secretary also assured the PNP of adequate legal support should they face trumped-up cases while on the line of duty.

“Hindi ako papayag na mademoralize ang ating mga pulis.

Gagawa ako ng sistema, titignan ko ito. Kung nasa lugar at tama naman, I will create a team to evaluate the evidence. Huwag kayong mag-alala tutulungan ko ang ating kapulisan,” he said.

The veteran local chief executive also highlighted the importance of addressing cybercrimes, especially with the advent of technology and Filipinos’ heavy reliance on social media.

He noted that cybercrimes, especially cyberpornography, have been on the rise following the surge in the use of the Internet due to the pandemic.

BOC consistent with intensified anti-smuggling efforts for 2022 MANILA -- As part of its commitment to strengthen border security, the Bureau of Customs (BOC), through the Intelligence Group (IG) and Enforcement Group (EG), reported its anti-smuggling efforts for the first half of 2022.

From January to June of this year, IG and EG reported 293 seizures of smuggled goods with an estimated value of P8.37 billion.

In terms of value, the following are the top 3 seized commodities: (1) counterfeit goods amounting to P5.23 billion; (2) illegal

drugs amounting to P1.67 billion; and (3) general merchandise which amounted to P388.80 million.

In addition, 58 Letters of Authority (LOA) were implemented for the same period, 44 of which yielded positive results.

Meanwhile, 78 alert orders were issued, 57 of which were positive for violation of pertinent customs laws, rules, and regulations.

BOC assures the public that it will continue to intensify its border protection efforts to protect the country against the entry of illicit goods.

DBM supports rightsizing of government agencies and personnel BUDGET Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman today, July 13, 2022, said that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) supports the thrust of the Marcos Administration for a lean, efficient and responsive government workforce.

In an interview with Mike Enriquez over DZBB, Sec. Pangandaman revealed that a proposal to rightsize the bureaucracy is being polished for submission to Congress before the delivery of the President’s State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA).

“Ang overarching objective nito [rightsizing] ay magkaroon ng maliit na burukrasya na agile at responsive sa makabagong panahon. Aayusin po ng programang ito ‘yung mga ahensya na mayroong repetitive functions or overlapping functions,” Sec. Pangandaman said.

According to Sec. Pangandaman, the proposal for rightsizing will determine which among the 187 government agencies and government-owned and -controlled corporations (GOCCs) with more or less 2-million personnel, may be streamlined through merging, restructuring or abolition.

The Budget Secretary stressed that with the proposed rightsizing, government will be able to save a significant amount of the budget which may be used to fund priority projects such as in building much-needed infrastructure, for social services, programs in the health sector, agriculture, among others.

“Halimbawa po, kung 5% po ang maapektuhan ng programa, ang katumbas po nito ay P14.8 billion po kada taon na matitipid natin sa ating personnel services,” she noted.

The Budget Chief said that affected personnel may apply to positions that will be created as an effect of the rightsizing. Government will also provide a retooling program for personnel so they may apply in vacant positions. Those who opt to retire will receive appropriate retirement benefits.

“Pwede po silang (affected personnel) mag-apply doon sa ibang position na pwede nating gawin at mabuo because of the rightsizing po. Iyong iba, magbibigay tayo ng tamang programa para sa kanila for retooling. Kasama po natin possible po ang Civil Service Commission.

Marcos Jr. supports review of education curriculum to address jobs mismatch MANILA -- President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is fully supportive of proposals to look at the country’s education curriculum in order to equip students with skills required by different industries and address the existing job mismatch.

In a statement, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said concerns about workers’ skills, competencies, and the way the Philippines produces its graduates were raised during the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

“Among the suggestions to address these standing issues include a reform of the current curriculum since the rise of automation has posed a threat to many jobs,” Secretary Angeles said.

The President presided Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting via teleconferencing since he is still in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

Marcos told his Cabinet members that basic education skills and knowledge must be improved to prepare students as they pursue higher level of learning.

“That’s exactly what is happening. That is why we have to look at the curriculum as well. Not only of TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority), but also even our diploma courses,”

Marcos said.

In his PowerPoint presentation, Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual underscored the need for a review of the country’s curriculum particularly the basic and tertiary education.

Basic skills must be instilled on students, Pascual said, adding that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is ramping up efforts to help universities develop micro-credentialing systems to catch up with fast-changing technological advancements.

“We’re developing or helping universities develop this system of micro-credentialing because technology is changing very fast. There is a need for workers to update themselves, to reskill or upskill,” Pascual said.

Pascual cited the case of the National University of Singapore which offers focused but short courses on certain technology and awards students with micro-credential, which is similar to a diploma but for a short course.

The DTI secretary also suggested the need for the Philippines to send Filipino teachers abroad for training.

“Vietnam, for example, sends teachers to the United States and Europe for advanced studies,” he said.

To address the current job mismatch, Pascual said the DTI should

collaborate closely with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and TESDA. “We will also collaborate with the said entities or authorities, the skills development, reskilling and upskilling of Philippine workforce through our own Philippine Skills Framework,” Pascual said. More tourism-driven infrastructure project PASAY CITY -- President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday cited the need to improve policies and infrastructure to strengthen the tourism industry in the country.

In a Cabinet meeting that he presided virtually, Marcos noted how Singapore fared in the tourism sector even with limited natural resources.

He said the city-state showed how policy and infrastructure are “so important” in giving a boost to tourism.

“That means that it can be done. We just have to support the plan to develop all of these enabling environment – the policy, conditions, and infrastructure,” Marcos told his Cabinet.

Marcos also noted that the equivalent of ease of doing business in tourism includes “ease of getting here, getting around, arranging for tours, getting drivers… finding a hotel.”

The chief executive also discussed how healthcare facilities in big tourist destinations like Boracay could be improved as he cited the arrangement implemented in beaches in Hawaii and Thailand. “[Sa] beach, maraming police and everything…So, if anything happens along that stretch, meron silang tatakbuhan kaagad. The lifeguards know exactly where to bring them,” he said. “That is supported by the local industry.

Toka-toka sila, to keep a doctor there, to keep a nurse there.”

Albay farmers soon to get own housing units from DAR

AGRARIAN reform beneficiaries (ARBs) who are members of the Albay Dairy Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Guinobatan, Albay will be the beneficiaries of the housing units under the Building, Adequate, Livable, Affordable, and Inclusive Filipino Communities (BALAI) project, a joint undertaking of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).

OIC-Regional Director Rodrigo O. Realubit said 200 units of bungalow-type houses will be constructed on a 2.6-hectare parcel of land in Barangay Upper Binogsacan donated by the local government of Guinobatan overlooking the majestic Mount Mayon.

“This initiative not only intends to provide the poor with a home but also to honor our unsung heroes— our farmers, who are among the most neglected sectors of our soci-

ety,” Realubit said.

He said about 170 units would be allocated to eligible members of the dairy cooperative with no houses, while the remaining units will be made available to other low-income farmers in the area.

“The 36-square-meter concrete homes will have two bedrooms, one toilet with electricity and water connections, a granite kitchen, tiled floors, and completely painted interior and exterior walls,” Realubit said.

Each house costs P520,000.00, which will be paid by the farmers over a maximum of 25 years at only 2 to 3% annual interest.

Albay OIC-Provincial head Patricia Rastrullo said that aside from the houses, the DAR will provide livelihood programs for the beneficiaries within the location to make the housing package financially inclusive to the farmers.

She commended Vice Mayor Ann Gemma Ongjoco for support-

ing and providing the land for the housing project.

“This is a milestone. We are very thankful for this initiative which will create modest and affordable dwelling units for our farmers. Through this project, their families will have the opportunity not only to live in a more comfortable home but also to improve their lives and economic condition,” Rastrullo said.

Walang babayaran ni sentimo dahil magiging bahagi ito ng Comprehensive Outpatient Benefits Program. Kasama sa medical check-up ang screening, physical examination, laboratory tests at konsultasyon,” explained Go.

Bong Go pushes for establishment of Super Health Centers nationwide SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go renewed his call for the establishment of Super Health Centers in key areas across the country in his video message at the groundbreaking for two such facilities in Libungan and Banisilan, North Cotabato province.

The senator maintained that improved access to quality public health services in the grassroots can be attained with the establishment of more Super Health Centers nationwide.

“Isinulong po natin at ipinaglaban na magkaroon ng Super Health Center dito sa inyo dahil alam ko po kung gaano ninyo kailangan na mapalapit sa inyo ang serbisyong medikal ng gobyerno,” said Go. “Layunin po ng mga centers na ito na mas ilapit pa sa ating mga kababayan ang mga serbisyong medikal ng gobyerno, lalo na sa mga nasa liblib na lugar at mga pinaka nangangailangan ng mga ito,” he added.

The Super Health Center is an improved version of the rural health unit. It offers health services including database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray and ultrasound), pharmacy and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done.

that the government has allocated nearly PhP3.6 billion in the 2022 Health Facilities Enhancement Program to construct 305 Super Health Centers.

“Sabi ko nga, now is the time to really invest in our healthcare system. Umaasa ako na ito ang huling pandemya sa ating buhay pero ang totoo hindi natin alam kung mayroon pang darating na susunod,” he said.

Go then stressed that the establishment of Super Health Centers is a great milestone not only for Cotabato, but for the country’s healthcare system.

“Through the establishment of facilities like these, I am confident that we can provide the best services and quality facilities for the benefit of Filipinos,” he remarked.

Bong Go urges gov’t to further strengthen vaccination campaign PASAY CITY -- Senator and Chair of the Senate Committee on Health Christopher “Bong” Go urged the government to further strengthen the national vaccination campaign, as the Department of Health reported rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

“I continue to urge the government to strengthen further our vaccination campaign to cover as many qualified individuals as possible,” said Go in a statement.

“We have done well the past year in acquiring sufficient vaccine supply but we must amplify these efforts further in order to reach areas with low vaccination rates,” he added.

Asked if he supports making booster shots mandatory, Go said that Filipinos should be provided with all the right information they need to make the right decision instead.

“Bukod sa sapat na supply, ‘awareness and access’ sa mga bakunang ito ang kailangan upang hindi masayang ang ating pinaghirapan. Kung pwede ay dalhin natin ang tamang impormasyon at mismong bakuna sa mga kabahayan lalo na sa mga liblib na lugar,” the senator said.

From July 4 to July 10, the country recorded a total of 10,271 new cases. That is around 39% more than the cases reported the week before, the DOH stated on Monday. Currently, 555 cases are considered severe or critical.

Non-Intensive care unit bed utilization rate remains low at 22.7% while ICU bed utilization rate is at 17%.

The health department, however, urged Filipinos to exercise caution and not to panic, telling them that “the virus is here to stay” and that new infections should be anticipated.

Bong Go’s team provides assistance to fire victims in Davao City PASAY CITY -- Senator Christopher “Bong” Go once again reminded all local government units to continue intensifying their efforts to reduce fire-related incidents and losses, particularly in vulnerable areas.

On Monday, July 11, Go sent his staff to distribute assistance to 16 fire victims in Barangay 31-D, Davao City as part of the senator’s efforts to help affected families recover. In his video message, the senator underscored the importance of further strengthening the Bureau of Fire Protection to more efficiently address fire-related incidents.

“Tuwing pumupunta ako sa mga lugar na nasusunugan, nakikita ko po yung hirap at yung hinagpis ng mga biktima. Obligasyon ng gobyerno na maging handa sa oras ng sakuna kaya nag-file ako ng batas para mabigyan ng karagdagang kagamitan at personnel ang ating Bureau of Fire Protection,” said Go,

“Dapat palagi natin paghandaan ang kahit anumang krisis o sakuna. Kaya naman nagpapasalamat ako sa dating pangulong (Rodrigo) Duterte at sa mga kapwa kong mambabatas sa mabilisang pagpapasa nito,” he expressed.

The said Act mandates the bureau to undergo a ten-year modernization program to improve its firefighting and rescue capabilities by recruiting more firefighters, acquiring modern fire equipment, and developing specialized training programs, among others.

Go’s team mounted the activity at the barangay hall where they handed out financial assistance, meals, food packs, vitamins and masks. Representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development also provided cash assistance.

SENATOR Bon Go remains committed to advocating the welfare and interest of the country’s uniformed personnel as he underscored the need to provide a Magna Carta for the officers and personnel of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Noting that the eradication of illegal drugs is one of the serious issues faced by the government, Go stressed the crucial role of anti-drug personnel who have been at the forefront of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s fight against criminality and illegal drugs. The lawmaker then cited how they have safeguarded the Filipino people, especially the youth, from the perilous effects of illegal drugs.

DENR turns over engineered sanitary landfill to Marawi THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has turned over the operations, maintenance, and management of a newly built sanitary landfill facility (SLF) to the government of Marawi City in Lanao del Sur province.

Former DENR OIC Secretary Joselin Marcus Fragada said that the completion of the engineered SLF serves as a “landmark accomplishment that will finally put an end to Marawi City’s long-time garbage problem.”

“The turnover of the 31.7-hectare SLF in Marawi City starts the ball rolling for the proper implementation of solid waste management in the historic Islamic City.

We hope that the residents of Lanao del Sur province will make good use of it for the benefit of their health and environment,” he said following the turnover ceremony and unveiling of markers in Brgy.

Under the deed of donation, the DENR will prepare and implement a five-year solid waste management project for Marawi City.

It will also procure several units of heavy equipment, machineries, and tools for information and communications technology development.

The DENR will likewise be responsible for the cost of the fuel, service and maintenance of the vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment, and their regular maintenance until the end of the project on December 31, 2022.

After the said period, the vehicles and equipment will then be-

come the property of the Marawi City local government, and the expenses relative to the operation of the SLF will be at their cost.

The properties, however, will only be used for the purpose of the donation.

Go pointed out that the construction of SLF in Marawi City is a “result of collaboration and shared action among the officials of the DENR, Marawi local government, Lanao del Sur provincial government, and the Task Force Bangon Marawi.”

“When you do not have a sanitary landfill, where do you put the garbage? If you dump it elsewhere, it affects the environment. This emphasizes the imperative need for shared action among government, non-government organizations, stakeholders, and communities,” Go said.

Following the ceremony, officials of the DENR officials and the Marawi city government also planted pine tree seedlings to preserve the ecosystem near the SLF. (DENR)

Children’s rights, welfare in MisOcc strengthened

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental (PIA)--The Misamis Occidental Provincial Inter-Agency Monitoring Task Force (PIMTF) chaired by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) conducted an evaluation on the functionality of the Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) in each of the 17 cities and municipalities of the province.

The assessment was particularly in implementing plans for the promotion of child and youth welfare in their respective localities, to ensure that the children’s rights and welfare are mainstreamed in the development of plans of local government units.

The main objective of this assessment is to ensure that the LCPCs are functional, relevant, and effective in carrying out policies, programs, and projects on all significant areas of concern for children.

Thus, the need to make the LCPC functional is crucial to sustain national efforts in the localization of the National Strategic Framework for Plan Development for Children.

Each LCPC in each of the 17 cities and municipalities of the province was evaluated during the monitoring activity through a table

assessment composed of the representatives of the different concerned agencies.

LGOO V Dannica Vicente spearheaded the assessment and highlighted the roles of the IMTF ensuring that programs for children are implemented at the local level, which further strengthens the commitment of LGUs to protect the future of the country.

Thus, since the LCPC is responsible for planning and spearheading programs for children at the local level with the end view of making the locality child friendly, it is through the monitoring that the LGUs and other concerned entities are given guidelines and evaluation tools for assessing the functionality of their programs.

The council is assessed based on its organizational stability; child-focused policies and plans; budget allocation and utilization; and service delivery monitoring and management for children.

Accordingly, the level of LCPC functionality is basic, when it receives a rating of 20% or less; progressive when it scores 21-50% rating; mature when it gets a rating of 51-79%; and ideal when the LGU obtains the 80-100% rating.

Guimaras’ food inflation upsurge to 9.4 percent ILOILO CITY (PIA) - - The annual rate of change in food commodity prices in the province of Guimaras went up to 9.4 percent in June, 2.5 percentage points quicker than the 6.9 percent inflation in May 2022, based on the Retail Price Survey of Commodities for the Generation of Consumer Price Index of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The top three heavily weighted food groups that drove year-on-year price increases in food items were rice (-1.7%) with the largest share of 31.0 percent, fruits and nuts (14.2%) with 26.1% contribution, and fish and other seafood (11.2%) chipping in 14.7%.

“Other food items that contributed to the food inflation shoot up in June 2022 were: Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals (13.9%); Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c (6.0%); Oils and fats (18.6%); Flour, Bread and Other Bakery Products; Pasta Products, and other Cereals (5.4%); Milk, and other dairy products and eggs (5.2%); Sugar, confectionery, and desserts (15.0%) and Corn (16.1%),” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.

Camiguin Water vows to improve, develop sustainable water supply

CAMIGUIN (PIA)--The Camiguin Water Company (CWC), a subsidiary of Mizu Resources, Inc. has partnered with Camiguin Integrated Water System Cooperative (CIWASCO) and several Barangay Waterworks to provide province-wide, forward looking, and sustainable water infrastructure solutions for Camiguin.

“A total of P600 million during a 30-year contract will be invested for the development and expansion of water services and sanitation management in the province,” CWC General Manager Danvir Mark Farnazo said.

He added that in their first 10 years of operation, P275 million is set for water source development, asset and non-revenue water management programs and service coverage expansion. CWC is close to completing Tupsan Pequeno Water System--this will provide water to more than 800 households (4,000 residents) in Barangays Tupsan Pequeno, Catohugan, and Hubangon in Mahinog as well as Tupsan Grande in Mambajao.

PH to strengthen technological and economic cooperation with ASEAN and Italy TRADE Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual virtually attended the European House – Ambrosetti’s hybrid session of the High-Level Dialogue on ASEAN-Italy Economic Relations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Forum serves as a platform for ASEAN and Italy’s economic ministers and senior officials to tackle critical issues centered on economy and technology. Specifically, it sheds a light on the macroeconomic outlook for ASEAN in the post-pandemic scenario, green technologies, and sustainable future.

In recent years, Italy and the entire ASEAN community have enjoyed considerable trade and investment relations. In 2019, the country was regarded as the 23rd largest trading partner of ASEAN, and by 2020, the region was able to export various products to Italy with a total value of USD1.68 billion.

During the forum, Trade Secretary Pascual highlighted three critical areas for collaboration: (1) Aerospace industry, (2) Renewable energy and sustainable consumption, and (3) Smart technologies that will help strengthen the manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

He shared that the Philippines is currently building two massive airport complexes namely: Clark International Airport and New Manila International Airport which proves that the country’s domestic aerospace industry is not building from scratch.

“The newly established Philippine Space Agency is gearing up for space technology R&D, including space data for disaster risk reduction and environment monitoring.

We can collaborate significantly on using remote sensing for agriculture and the environment,” Secretary Pascual said.

Likewise, the Secretary mentioned that the country is currently working on developing an ecosystem that will help support the production and assembly of electronic vehicles (EV), which strengthens its position as an ideal investment destination for Italian EV makers.

“Our country also has a robust regime for strategic trade management, intellectual property protection, and labor protection. These, apart from solid competencies in electronics, could be leveraged to support electric vehicle and battery manufacturing,” he added.

Further, he mentioned that the country is focusing on three strategic industry clusters that will help drive high-tech industrialization such as electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries, IT and business process management services, Artificial Intelligence, and data analytics, and digital health products, pharmaceutical, and pharmaceutical products.

He, likewise, expressed that both the Philippines and Italy could explore possible solutions in battling climate change as both are currently facing threats brought about by the said phenomenon.

In closing, the trade chief expressed optimism about strengthening the relations between the Philippines and Italy, as both countries look forward to technological and policy cooperation in areas of sustainable production and consumption, green product innovation, and circular economy. PH exports sustain growth at 8.4% in May 2022 MANILA -- Contributing to the sustained expansion of the country’s economy, the Philippine exports grew by 8.4%, reaching USD31.87 billion in January to May 2022 from USD29.40 billion in 2021, based on the preliminary data from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

On a year-on-year (YOY) basis, Philippine merchandise exports increased by 6.2%, adding USD6.31 billion this month in export receipts. Meanwhile, May 2022 export data is 12.18% higher than the pre-pandemic average covering 2017 to 2019.

As the national government continues to ease public health restrictions, manufacturing activities in the country also pick up. In fact, the S&P Global Philippines Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 54.1 in May as new orders and production further grew.

Likewise, seven of the top 10 major commodity groups recorded an annual increase in export value.

Specifically, it was led by coconut oil which surged by 180.5%, other mineral products by 32.9%, and chemicals by 23.6%.

The implementation of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) with budget support amounting to PHP11.25 billion is expected to further boost the farmers’ productivity and income.

CFIDP’s components and programs cover health and medical, crop insurance, scholarships, training and farm schools, cooperative and association organization, hybridization operations, intercropping activities, dairy integration, and shared processing facilities.

“The Department of Trade and Industry will continue to adopt an industry development-centric approach in growing our exports.

Since one of our top exports is coconut oil, we will also focus on helping the coconut industry become more globally competitive”, Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual stated.

“We need to further develop our human capital and technological capabilities, modernize and streamline our supply chains, invest in infrastructure development, and provide enabling regulatory and legal environment to enable our in-

dustries to compete and serve both domestic and global demands,” He added.

The Department will reconfigure its export priorities by focusing on clusters that offer strategic advantages to the Philippines and building on its current sectoral strengths and capabilities.

Electronic products continue to be the country’s top export, accounting for 59% year-on-year or 41% year-to-date of total exports. This month’s top electronic exports are components/devices (semiconductors), electronic data processing, other electronics, telecommunication, and control and instrumentation.

LANDBANK powers South Cotabato hospital’s sustainable healthcare

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato -- As part of its commitment to operate an environmentally sustainable hospital, the Dr. Arturo P. Pingoy Medical Center is tapping into solar energy as an alternative power source to deliver quality healthcare to patients.

Established by physician spouses Dr. Arturo and Dr. Amparo Pingoy in 1961, the hospital has grown from a small out-patient clinic into a three-storey medical building with a 100-bed capacity.

The Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) has been a major partner of the hospital since 1998, extending credit assistance amounting to P612 million which were used for working capital and construction of medical buildings and facilities. Of this amount, P127 million was allotted for the establishment and operations of the medical school, St. Alexius College, Inc. Now operated by the Pingoy children, the hospital is transforming into a ‘green’ healthcare facility by using a portion of the latest loan under LANDBANK’s Go Green Inclusive Financing Program to install 897 solar panels that now serve as an alternative power source.

With a total capacity of 342 kilowatt peak (kWp), the solar panels are able to supply 30% to 40% of the total energy requirement of the hospital. This generates around P4.8 million in savings per year, which improves the medical center’s cash flow and can be used for other essential expenses.

“As an energy-intensive business, we want to do our part in minimizing the hospital’s carbon footprint, while keeping our patients and employees safe and comfortable. With LANDBANK’s support, we were able to make this a reality,” said daughter Dr. Nanette P. Franco, who serves as a director at the Medical Center.

Additionally, the solar power

helps the hospital continue operations even during power failures, preventing the disruption of medical procedures and damage to hospital equipment.

Through the Go Green Inclusive Financing Program, LANDBANK aims to finance the acquisition, construction, or installation of equipment, systems, appliances, or structures for the efficient and cost effective use of energy or electricity.

Eligible borrowers include enterprises registered as single proprietors, partners, cooperatives, and corporations; local government units (LGUs); government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs); state universities and colleges; and private universities and colleges classified as small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Up to 90% of the total project cost may be borrowed to finance non-fossil energy sources, such as roof top solar energy systems, wind mills or turbine systems or hybrid energy generators, and waste to energy conversion systems or equipment.

The LANDBANK Go Green Inclusive Financing Program also finances the installation of thermal insulation and heat exchange systems, energy efficient lightings, rain collection or water recycling systems, construction of green buildings, and installation or adoption of energy efficient cooling systems and equipment, among others.

Loans are payable up to 15 years based on cash flow or the economic useful life of the financed project, whichever is shorter. The interest rate shall be based on the prevailing market rate, but not lower than 5% per year.

As of 31 May 2022, LANDBANK has approved loans totaling P48.9 million under the Go Green Inclusive Financing Program, underscoring the Bank’s thrust of promoting sustainable finance and development. (LANDBANK)

The Leaders in Futures of Education (LIFE) course will teach teachers and administrators how to collaboratively design and plan for innovative future learning spaces that will maximize children’s language and literacy. After the course, participants will develop local prototypes of future learning spaces.

One of the programs of the PRC that address nutrition is Hot Meals on Wheels. The PRC Hot Meals on Wheels has served 153,093 beneficiaries from January 2021 up to date. The program started in 2005, through the vision of PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon to provide hot and ready-to-eat meals to the most vulnerable. Today, PRC has 35 food trucks that serve hot meals to food-poor communities and people affected by disasters across the country. Each food truck is equipped with an industrial-size rice cooker, warmers, oven, and

burners. It is designed to provide meals on-site to people who lose access to their cooking facilities in the aftermath of a disaster.

The food trucks were used to serve meals to locally stranded individuals, children in food-poor communities, the elderly, the locked down families, the sick, and persons with disability. This non-disaster feeding program will continue to be implemented as needed.

PNVSCA advocates volunteerism as a development strategy in the Western Visayas AS part of its advocacy efforts to mainstream volunteerism as a development strategy, PNVSCA, with the leadership of Executive Director Donald James Gawe, continued its series of consultations with local government units (LGUs) and state universities and colleges (SUCs) in Western Visayas on 15-17 June 2022.

Consultations were conducted with the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, City Government of Roxas, Municipal Government of Miagao, Iloilo and Municipal Government of Buenavista, Guimaras. In addition, PNVSCA visited and met with the key officials of Capiz State University, Guimaras State University, and West Visayas State University.

The consultations were held to identify opportunities for collaboration and initiate discussions on possible converge and linkaging of various volunteering efforts and local resources. To provide the target partners with a general overview of the National Volunteer Service Program, PNVSCA discussed the role of the Agency, basic volunteerism concepts, policy framework, as well as the recommended actions on how to integrate volunteerism as a development strategy in the curriculum and in the local plans and policies.

PNVSCA recommended the following for the LGUs to consider in strengthening volunteerism in the locality: (1) designate a Volunteerism Focal Person (VFP); (2) provide platform or opportunities for volunteering of current employees and the private sector; (3) integrate volunteerism in the local development plan; (4) formulate volunteerism policies; (5) recognize volunteers/volunteer organizations;

and (6) engage volunteers in the implementation of their respective programs, activities and projects (PAPs).

On the other hand, PNVSCA’s recommendations for SUCs are: (1) provide platform or opportunities for volunteering of current employees (faculty and non-faculty), alumni and the private sector, and students; (2) integrate volunteerism in the curriculum; (3) promote the conduct of volunteerism-related researches; (4) recognize volunteers/ volunteer organizations; and (5) engage volunteers in the implementation of PAPs. During the discussions, PNVSCA highlighted the issues and misconceptions surrounding volunteerism, as well as the need for financial support to implement a volunteering program, emphasizing the significance of incorporating volunteerism into the Executive and Legislative Agenda of LGUs. In addition, PNVSCA encouraged LGUs and SUCs to collaborate and harmonize their volunteering efforts, and potentially serve as a Volunteerism Local Learning Hub in their respective localities.

DepEd releases guidelines for SY 2022-2023 PASIG CITY -- The Department of Education (DepEd) has released the guidelines on the School Calendar and Activities for School Year 2022-2023 in accordance with its commitment to the resumption of 5 days of in-person classes.

Signed by Vice President and Secretary Sara Z. Duterte on Monday, DepEd Order No. 034, series of 2022, sets the start of classes on August 22 and will end on July 7, 2023. There will be 203 school days or as may be determined by further issuance/s in case of changes in the school calendar due to unforeseen circumstances.

In the issuance, DepEd also provides direction and guidance in the re-opening of classes and the gradual introduction of 5 days of in-person learning modality classes.

According to DO 034, s. 2022, there will be no inspections, tools, or any additional requirements to re-open schools and implement five (5) days of in-person classes will be required, except for the compliance with the usual pre-pandemic regulatory permits and licenses, as required by law or ordinances.

Developed by the Agency through the Case Management and Records Division (CMRD), these information systems include lnvestigation and Supervision of Parole and Executive Clemency lnformation System (ISPECIS), Probation lnformation System (PlS), Parole and Probation Case Management lnformation System (PPCMIS), Pefformance Monitoring and Evaluation lnformation System (PMEIS) and Human Resource Management and Development lnformation System (HRMDIS).

To achieve the mission and vision of the Agency and to keep up with the current trend of utilizing digital infrastructure in obtaining vital information, the PPA conceptualized and proposed the digitization of its client database.

The said information systems were developed to improve the public service delivery of the PPA through reduced time in report preparation in investigation and supervision; consistent monitoring of the status of cases handled by the field officers; efficient identification of rehabilitation programs participated in by the clients and sustainable maintenance of case history of clients for easier retrieval of case records.

According to CMRD, PPCMIS is already in full implementation while the PIS is on its pilot implementation stage and roll out. The rest of the information system is nearing development completion.

Gov’t takes on measures to counter high prices and low supply of chicken QUEZON CITY -- With the increasing price of poultry brought about by higher demand for chicken and seemingly low poultry production, the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has put in place interventions following regular consultations with the industry stakeholders.

According to BAI OIC-Director Reildrin Morales, BAI has lined up interventions that includes increase production and stabilize supply and market price.

Among the measures being undertaken is allowing inter-island movement from mainland Luzon of day-old chicks, hatching eggs and ready to lay pullets. For day-old chicks and hatching eggs, movement is allowed provided they tested negative for AI 28 days from the date of sample collection. For ready to lay pullets, movement is allowed provided they tested negative for AI 14 days from the date of sample collection.

Aside from this, BAI determines the actual supply scenario by working closely with partners from the private sector in regularly validating the broiler life cycle model.

To address high cost of agri inputs, Morales added that DA executives will be conducting dialogues with other countries on possible alternative sources of cheaper feed ingredients.

On other disease concerns, the BAI has already issued special import permits for needed vaccines in order to support disease prevention on other poultry diseases such as In-

fectious Body Hepatitis (IBH).

Lastly, the DA has already lifted the temporary ban for poultry products coming from Spain, Denmark, Czech Republic.

According to Morales, the increase in demand was caused by the opening of markets, including hotels and restaurants, now that pandemic restrictions are more relaxed.

Moreover, with the economy slowly opening up and creating job opportunities, more consumers have purchasing power to buy meat for their families.

“The uneven demand-supply situation may also be attributed to the restrictions in movement of live birds, poultry products and by-products due to Avian Influenza (AI) cases in some areas,” Morales said.

The BAI has also monitored a decrease in the volume of production due to high cost of feed inputs

along with challenges on other Hepatitis. These could also be attributed to stunted growth of poultry birds.

Early this week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that his administration’s priority is the increase of production of the country’s major staples, including corn, which is consumed as food and animal feed.

“Corn especially became very important because the feed-wheat that we were importing, na-cut off ang supply nation, so we have to substitute it with corn,” Marcos said.

“This season, the corn growers were able to come together and provide sufficient feed for the broiler production”, he added.

As such, support will be given to industry stakeholders to ensure steady production of poultry and supply of chicken.

MANDALUYONG CITY -- The Philippine Red Cross, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection Tagaytay City and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, deployed an ambulance team, a search and rescue team, and a welfare team to assist the people affected when a wall collapsed in Barangay Kaybagal Central, Tagaytay City, Cavite on July 11. The incident, involving eight (8) victims, happened on a residential construction site.

The emergency medical services team treated a patient with multiple body abrasions and laceration, while the welfare team provided psychosocial support to another patient.

DSWD Regional Director Mari-Flor A. Dollaga received the request for assistance to the displaced families from the 4th ID Commander Major General Wilbur C. Mamawag. Mamawag requested the assistance early Tuesday, a few hours after a fire broke out in one of the buildings inside the Ammunition Complex, 10th Forward Service Support Unit (FSSU), Army Support Command (ASCOM) of the Philippine Army Camp.

DSWD Field Office 10 provided an initial 100 family food packs to the 100 displaced families who are temporarily staying inside the camp’s gymnasium.

The fire caused a series of loud explosions in the city. The said building houses 155mm Howitzer rounds and various small arms ammunition, a press release of the 4th ID stated.

BIR rescinds 5-year validity period on receipts/ invoices QUEZON CITY -- Effective July 16, 2022, official receipts and invoices have no more validity period and therefore may still be issued until fully exhausted.

Through the recently issued Revenue Regulations (RR) No. 6-2022, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has removed the fiveyear validity period on all printed and system-generated receipts/invoices. This is in line with Republic Act (RA) No. 11032 also known as “Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act of 2018” and as part of the Bureau’s continuous efforts in revisiting its policies and business processes to improve, streamline and reduce financial burden on the part of taxpayers.

Based on the regulations, the previously required phrases “This invoice/receipt shall be valid for five (5) years from the date of the Permit to Use” and “Valid Until” at the bottom portion of the system-generated receipts/invoices shall be omitted.

Authority to Print (ATP) principal and supplementary receipts/ invoices inclusive of its serial numbers and its usage shall also have no expiration, thus the same aforementioned phrases stating the validity date on the manual receipts/invoices previously required shall also be omitted.

Experts launch two reports to address global biodiversity

BONN, Germany -- Governments met in Bonn during the ninth session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (#IPBES9).

Experts and representatives of almost 140 countries conferred to advance the necessary scientific evidence in addressing the biodiversity crisis.

The week-long meeting was conducted to consider the approval of two major scientific reports on “Sustainable Use of Wild Species” and “Values and Valuation of Nature.” It was also the first in-person meeting of the global scientific body on biodiversity since the COVID-19 pandemic.

IPBES is the intergovernmental body that assesses the state of biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides to society in response to requests from decision-makers.

Observer.com Space Science Camp set on July 19-21 MANILA -- To raise awareness on space science and technology, a Space Science Camp will be organized by the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) from July 19 to 21 virtually and in Quezon City on the second day.

“This event aims to raise awareness and interest in space science and technology. The camp also aims to inspire and empower the younger generation to pursue further studies related to Space Science Technology & Applications (SSTA),” one of the project leaders, James Cesar Refran, told the Philippine News Agency on Friday.

Refran said that due to the pandemic restrictions, the PhilSA has decided to conduct the camp this year as a pilot program, and prepare for a bigger camp next year.

For 2022, incoming senior high school (SHS) learners, campus journalists, and educators from science high schools from the 16 division schools of Metro Manila have been invited to the three-day camp, he said.

According to the PhilSA, 32 SHS students and 16 teachers will be attending the camp.

PhilSA has partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Moon Village Association (MVA), and the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED), in preparing lectures on SSTA, workshops on space mission planning, space science communication.

App to detect depression among Covid patients

MANILA – A mobile application (app) is currently being developed to detect and alleviate depression among persons with mild coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The project, which was funded by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) for PHP11 million, started in February and the app is expected to be completed before the year ends.

“The app has a chatbot which would talk to the patients about their symptoms. The app also includes modules containing guidelines to prevent Covid-19, as well things to do when one contracts the virus,” PCHRD project manager Lemuel Lozada told the Philippine News Agency in an interview on Wednesday.

Lozada added that the app also contains other relevant information and advisories, and lists of nearby mental health facilities and the mental hotline of the Department of Health (DOH). Educational materials from the DOH and the World Health Organization can also be found.

“Using the app would help lessen the anxiety and depression among patients with mild Covid-19.

They would not need to go to a doctor or schedule an online consultation if they don’t experience severe symptoms,” said Lozada.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Department of Science and Technology-Region 3 (DOST-Central Luzon) has boosted the disaster rescue and relief capabilities of poor and vulnerable communities in the region through the adoption of locally developed disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) technology.

Funded under the DOST’s Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program, the project Mobile Command and Control Vehicle (MOCCOV) with triage technology will be adopted to strengthen the local disaster preparedness and post-pan-

demic recovery capacities of the communities in Central Luzon.

DOST-3 Regional Director Julius Caesar Sicat has cited how the technology will benefit the communities at risk during disasters.

“From this technology, makakapunta tayo on site, sa isang lugar na malapit doon sa actual center ng calamity, maise-setup natin ‘yung command center natin. Mayroon ‘yan lahat ng capabilities (From this technology, we can go onsite, in a place near the actual center of the calamity. We can set up our command center. It has all the capabilities). We are better prepared than the Philippines was in the event of Typhoon Haiyan,” Sicat said in a video interview on Wednesday.

The MOCCOV, which is an in-

vention by Filipino inventor Dennis Abella, is a facility used to plan, direct, coordinate, and control forces and assets to ensure mission accomplishment in times of emergency management and preparedness.

It is equipped with various capabilities for emergency situations to exercise contingency and response plans and has its own weather station system, drone, satellite phone, and other communication and surveillance equipment.

In times of rescue operations, the technology has included triage with available rescue equipment and medical apparatuses.

PCIEERD to focus on supporting e-mobility projects

By Ma. Cristina Arayata MANILA – An official of the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) said the council will focus on supporting projects related to e-mobility in the coming years to boost its viability.

“In the coming years, (PCIEERED) will focus on supporting the development of robust infrastructure to make e-mobility more attractive and viable, rolling out optimized fast charging stations nationwide, implementing an EV (electric vehicle) components standardization program, including systems and technologies for batteries, and by enhancing further existing intelligent electric transportation system,” PCIEERD executive director Enrico Paringit said.

Paringit delivered the closing remarks at the launch of Megaworld’s EV charging station at Uptown Mall, Taguig City in the afternoon.

The opening of EV charging station will go a long way in making the public aware of EVs and

e-mobility, he added.

Paringit mentioned that over the last five years, PCIEERD has already invested over PHP321 million to support EV-related projects, such as the development of locally-made e-jeeps, e-trikes, e-boats; batteries more suitable for electric powered transportation; fastcharging stations, and network and management systems.

An e-mobility R&D center in Cagayan was also launched by the Department of Science and Technology.

Without citing a figure, Paringit assured to the Philippine News Agency that PCIEERD’s budget allocation for projects related to e-mobility is higher for 2022 to 2025.

At least PHP190 million was already allocated for the projects that are already in the pipeline, he said.

“Infrastructure on charging should be a priority in order to accelerate adoption of e-mobility.

We also need to support the supply chain to make technologies like batteries and EV parts assembly and

manufacturing robust and competitive,” Paringit said in a Viber message.

The private sector could help by adopting the technologies, and commercializing the products, he added.

Paringit said PCIEERD has partnered with Megaworld in promoting e-mobility technologies.

“This initiative of Megaworld is consistent with DOST’s goal of improving the Philippines’ transportation efficiency by developing, harnessing and embracing e-mobility,” Paringit said. (PNA)

AN official of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) on Friday said they are currently looking at developing a cybersecurity training program, in possible partnership with other countries.

“As we are transitioning to the 5th Industrial Revolution that mostly concerns and involves the internet and computer software, this (would be) beneficial for government, businesses (for) ease of doing business, and also this could help prevent cyber-attacks,” TESDA officer in charge Rosanna Urdaneta told the Philippine News Agency.

Urdaneta noted that unlike other information and communications technology (ICT) courses, cybersecurity is multidisciplinary. “It’s not sufficient that you know about computers,” she said.

The official explained that students also need to learn, for instance, phishing attacks where the hacker tries to fool victims to click a compromised link. While there are technical ways to prevent phishing, this can be better prevented if one is aware of cybersecurity, Urdaneta added.

TESDA is still in the process of discussing the proposed Competency Standards with its Qualifications and Standards Office, and the ICT Office.

A TESDA board member has been assigned to assist in standards and competency development.

“We had a meeting on the proposed competencies yesterday. We agreed on a lot of things and we are confident that we will be able to present this to the expert panel and eventually to the TESDA Board within a month,” she said.

Once the Qualification Standard is approved by the board, it will take about three to six months to train assessors and trainers for the new course.

Urdaneta, meanwhile, said TESDA is eyeing to partner with Israel in developing the new training program.

“Israel has one of the world’s largest networks of cybersecurity professionals. It also offers an advanced cybersecurity training to its citizens as part of the mandatory military training. So this partnership can be very beneficial to the Philippines.”

TESDA is also open to partnerships with other countries willing to assist in developing the Cybersecurity National Certification, she continued.

Major tourism activity opens in Siargao town after ‘Odette’

DAPA, Siargao Island – More than six months after the onslaught of Typhoon Odette, the town of Dapa in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte has kicked off a major tourism and sports activity.

The “First Dapa Siargao National Dragon Boat Regatta 2022” started its first wave of competitions on Saturday morning.

“The is the first big event in Siargao Island after we were hit by Typhoon Odette in December last year,” Mayor Elizabeth Matugas said in her opening remarks during the presentation of teams.

A total of 21 dragon boat teams nationwide are entered, including those from the Philippine Army and Navy. They will vie for PHP475,000 in cash prizes.

Data from the Department of Tourism-13 (Caraga) showed that at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of health protocols in 2020, tourist arrivals in Siargao slipped to 67,717 (49,681 domestic and 18,036 foreign).

No domestic and foreign arrivals were recorded on the island in April, May and October 2020.

The number further dipped to 55,840 in 2021 (28,287 domestic and 27,553 foreign).

In 2019, there were 257,900 arrivals (183,042 domestic and

74,858 foreign).

From January to March this year, there were 1,108 arrivals (953 domestic and 155 foreign) and increased in April and May with 8,141

Dororthy Gonzaga in her message.

On Tuesday (July 5, 2022), a motorcade was conducted within the vicinity of Maragusan where they exhibited the town’s best lechons. Around two-hundred forty (240) roasted pigs were sponsored

by Mayor Cabalquinto, Congressman Ruwel Peter Gonzaga, and Governor Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga.

The event was also graced by visitors from the 24 barangays in

Maragusan.

Beforehand, the Augmented 7th band of Davao, along with other religious groups led the praiseand-worship to the people as they set the new face of governance and the first-ever lechon festival. Moreover, the homegrown talents such as the Maragusan Hip-hop Dance Community and the Quatro, together with some GMA artists amused the crowd with their superb performances. Meanwhile, free services like free haircuts, manicures, and pedicures were also conducted by the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) –Maragusan, and the Municipal Health Office (MHO)-Maragusan was on standby for emergency responses.

The celebration ended with a thanksgiving concert and fireworks display, which gave the people light and hope for a better Maragusan.

Thus, these kinds of events, organized by G&Jworks Production by Jaime, would offer more opportunities for Maragusan, as the Summer Capital of Davao de Oro, to spur tourism development and a great platform to showcase what a place like Maragusan has to offer not just in the Philippines but to the whole world.

Boracay: TIME’s 50 World’s Greatest Places

MANILA – The Department of Tourism (DOT) hails the inclusion of Boracay Island among TIME’s 50 extraordinary destinations to explore in 2022.

“The DOT affirms its pride and honor as Boracay Island once again proved its allure as a tourist haven. Such recognition will surely help us attain our goal of regaining our position in the global market,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said in a news release.

“Surely, the Philippines has a multitude of sites and tourism activities that we could offer to the world.

And, in addition to natural resources, we look forward as well to developing and promoting the talents of our people and the products that have potential for national and global marketability,” she added.

Boracay Island joins other world-famous destinations and natural wonders on the list, including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Seoul in South Korea, and Doha in Qatar, among others.

In 2018, a six-month closure of the island was imposed by the previous administration to make way for rehabilitation and redevelopment initiatives.

“Then the pandemic struck, and the Philippines closed its bor-

ders, halting even domestic tourism to Boracay. It took a severe toll on the local economy, but the silver lining was that this 4-sq.-mi. speck in the Visayas island chain had proper time to truly recover. As of February 2022, international visitors can finally revel in this revamped, recuperated, natural playground after what was effectively a three-year convalescence. Locals report the return of flora and fauna, like sea turtles, and hospitality has come back just as spectacularly,” wrote Charlie Campbell of TIME. “Through collaboration between the DOT central and regional offices, relevant national government agencies, the local government units, and the private sector, we will exert all efforts to put in the limelight not only the country’s premier tourist destinations like Boracay, but also other places of interest in the country which may not have been given equal focus and attention in the past,” Secretary Frasco said.

In coming up with its list of 50 World’s Greatest Places for 2022, TIME solicited nominations from its international network of correspondents and contributors, putting focus on places “those offering new and exciting experiences.”
