How can we take an object at the end of its life cycle and prolong its usefulness with another purpose in mind?

Table Luminaire

Lighting Design/ Art Center at Night/ Fall 2018

This project aims to offer an answer to this question by incorporating sustainability as the guiding principle for design. By taking a used plastic bottle and upcycling it into a table lamp, I sought to call attention to the unnecessary abundance of waste in our society, as well as to offer a liable alternative from which to address the end of a product’s life.

Adevelopment.usedbookacts as the on/off switch for the new lamp. A strip of copper tape at the spine of a book completes the circuit as it is closed, creating a luminous ring at the base of the lamp.

Media: Repurposed plastic bottle and book, laser cut acrylic and synthetic laminates, paper, LED light strip, copper tape, electrical wiring and components, needle and thread.

The objective of the course was to combine the development of form with the application of technical electrical skills. I sought to meet this objective through a method of discovery through making. I created a light base with the combination of acrylic sections and LED light strips. The earliest prototypes pointed out to the need to create a shade to diffuse the intensity of the light. I decided on the use of a synthetic laminate to created this diffuser. The flexibility of this material allowed me to iterate with agility through the use of Rhino and a laser cutting machine. The end result yielded a wider assortment of options from which to choose from for further

Prototype Exploration

Final Prototype

The final prototype proposal offers a third, less seldom used, approach to the creation of products today. What if a product, in its final state, was to reveal the human involvement in the creative process? An end product that evidenced a creative process which not only involved machines or only involved human craft making? A hybrid man + machine creation process that heightened the strength of each in its synthesis.

By combining the use of current prototyping technology with the human craft making technique of needle stitching, I sought to offer such an alternative by leaving traces of human agency within the creative process.

I worked in a team of four students to create a mobile application which tracks home electricity usage to encourage users to adopt more energy efficient behavior while increasing their personal awareness of sustainable issues.

UX/UI Development

As a group we conducted user research and iterated through the features and the aesthetic consistency of the app through several whiteboardcoffee-fueledsessionsand many more wireframing iterations thereafter.

Task Flow

Our research found that most users prefer apps that are intuitive to use and have a consistent task flow in its entirety. This became the key guiding principle of our design.

The final outcome of our team’s collaboration became a working prototype available online at the InVision website. I assumed responsibility for the development of UI wireframes for the Settings and Energy Consumption Comparisons sections of the app. p.

Final Prototype

Media: Paper, pencil and markers on whiteboard for early analog development. SketchApp, Marvel and InVision for digital prototyping.

Communication Sketch/ ACN/ Summer 2017

Media: Colored pencils and markers on marker paper.

Ideation sketches 03

The objective of this course was to learn foundational sketching skills and techniques essential to become a better visual communicator and express ideas with more fluidity.

Digital Models

04

In this class we learned a basic foundation for the use of Rhino for to create products and environments. Through a series of class exercises and individual design assignments, I learned how to use the software to leverage my ideas into the digital realm.

Intro to Rhino/ Art Center at Night/ Summer 2016

Media: Rhino 5, Keyshot, Photoshop.

Media: Arduino Uno microcontroller, 5V power supply, LED light strips, electrical wiring, Magic Controller app. Arduino IDE running Adafruit´s NeoMatrix sketch.

Tech for Designers/ Art Center at Night/ Spring

Our final group project involved the creation of individual LED Matrix boxes that we assembled and combined to create a dynamic light installation, which we could control through the use of a phone app.

LED RGB Matrix 05

2017

This class was an overview of how to get started programming microcontrollers and electronics. The goals of the class were to understand what a microcontroller does and how it can be incorporated into designs and prototypes.

Arduino Drawbot

Media: Arduino Uno microcontroller board , 9V batteries, various electronic components, cardboard, foamboard, rubber wheels, pens, pencils and markers.

Personal Project

I have become an avid enthusiast of the capabilities of Arduino prototyping. As a way to learn more about the technology, I built a Sparkfun project homage to the Logo Turtle Project. This is a mechanical robot that can be programmed within the Arduino IDE to move with wheels on a rotor and to draw with the the marking utensil of choice. Henri, my first drawbot, turned out to be a pretty good artist indeed.
