Strength in Service

OCTOBER 2023

A funny story is told about Christian Herter, who was Governor of Massachusetts in the 1950s. In 1954, he was running for a second term in office. One day, after a busy day campaigning (and having no lunch) he arrived at a barbecue. It was late afternoon and Herter was extremely hungry. As the governor moved down the serving line, he held out his plate to the woman serving chicken. She put one piece of chicken on his plate and turned to the next person in line.

"Excuse me," Governor Herter said, "Do you mind if I have another piece of chicken?"

"Sorry," the woman told him. "I'm supposed to give one piece of chicken to each person."

"But I'm starving," the governor said.

"Sorry," the woman said again. "Only one per person.”

Governor Herter decided to throw his weight around. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. "I am the governor of this state."

Unfazed, the woman leaned over and spoke. "Do you know who I am?" the woman said. "I'm the lady in charge of giving everyone one piece of chicken! Now move on!”

True freedom and strength come when one is secure in identity, particularly when serving.

Once, the disciples of Jesus argued about who was the greatest. Jesus told his disciples that “The greatest among you must be as a servant.” Mark 10:43a

The disciples were learning that to follow Jesus is to be secure in who they were as servants of God, to be humble in manner, and to face life in obedience to God, because that was the very path that Jesus was taking.

Peter Forsythe, the Scottish theologian, was correct when he said, "The first duty of every soul is to find not its freedom but to find its Master.” It is when we are sure of our identity in serving God that we find our greatest strength and freedom.

Psalm 95:1-6

O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed. O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

John 4:24

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe.

Worship.

It is an encounter with the living God through the risen Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Through our worship, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving to the One who called us into being and who calls us to gather together as the Body of Christ. As we worship, we direct our hearts and minds toward God who, in turn, reveals his grace in our lives in many different ways.

I believe worship is one of the most important things we do as Christians, realizing that every day of our lives is a time for worship. Of course, I believe that we are not called to simply worship. We are to worship well and with integrity. This involves the dedication of both those who plan the weekly worship service as well as those who gather to take part in the service.

From my experience, the more we are actively engaged in the worship service, the deeper our connection is with God and with those with whom we gather. True worship has power. It lifts us to the gate of heaven and sends us through the door of service.

How do you worship?

Is it in spirit and in truth?

Is it with an openness to God’s grace?

Do you actively participate in the service?

May our worship be pleasing to God and instill in us the call to worship through our service.

Rev.

Author and clergyman Ronald Rolheiser said,

“We go to church so as not to be alone alone in our joys, alone in our suffering, alone in the everydayness of our lives, alone in the important passages of our lives. We go to church to tell people we love them, and hopefully, to hear them tell us the same thing.”

Can you believe not everyone has a church family? How awful is that! I can’t imagine going through my life without the support and love of those friends I have met from church. Do you know where most Americans are on Sunday mornings? Staying at home, sleeping in, or standing in line at the local Perkins or other breakfast place to get brunch. I wonder if they even realize they are missing out on something wonderful.

Did you know that in a recent survey, 85% of Americans said they would go to church, but no one has invited them they would be willing to go give it a try; they are just waiting for the invitation!

At Prism, we say, “Don’t forget to invite your ‘FRANS’ your Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors, and Strangers!” So, what are we waiting for? Let’s invite those FRANS!

During the next few weeks at Prism, you’ll get your name entered into a drawing to win a new car on Oct. 15 when we kick off our Fall message series: “Harvesting the Fruits of the Spirit!”

Invite a “FRAN” and share the love! We can’t wait to welcome them on Sunday mornings at 11:00 am!

Happy Fall Y’all!

Sharing Your Story

Nothing grabs my attention more than when someone looks me in the eye, leans back and begins to tell me their story, not just any story, but their faith story. When someone shares their story with you, you can feel the authenticity of it. You can feel the warmth of their heart through an inevitable smile that will slowly come across their lips as they testify to what God has done for them.

What’s your story? If you think you don’t need one, trust me you do. If it hasn’t already happened, there will be a time when you alone will be responsible for sharing the love of Jesus Christ.

I took my daughter and a group of her girlfriends to a sweet sixteen birthday dinner in Indianapolis, Indiana. I invited a friend of mine to help me chaperone. After a beautiful dinner in what was then the Eagle’s Nest (a rotating restaurant with panoramic views of the city), we headed to the parking garage. Downtown was busy. There were several events going on. We finally got on the elevator with a mother and her adult daughters, and headed up to our car, but the elevator stopped. The girls panicked, so my friend and I feigned strength, so the girls wouldn’t see our fear.

Before the abrupt halt of the elevator, the mother and her daughters were having a lively conversation about babysitting. Her daughters thought she was going to babysit, but she told them she was going out of town. The elevator stopped as if to emphasize her point. The woman’s face remained peaceful, and as if on cue, she looked around at all of us and she said, “Don’t you girls worry about a thing. God is holding this elevator up!”

She went on to tell us about some things she had encountered in her life, and ended by saying she was certain that God was going to protect us. We believed her, and as we began to relax, the elevator moved. Fireman greeted us as the doors opened. They made sure we were okay, and we went on to our cars.

Now, I don’t know if you’re going to be trapped in an elevator for an hour, but nothing will bring more comfort than sharing your faith story with those who want to listen. It is our mission to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Fall Greeter Orientation… we have a seat for YOU.

Our greeters have a critical responsibility in the worship experience at GUMC. Currently, our church is blessed to have a dedicated group of 46 greeters who warmly welcome all of our members and guests who come to worship.

A greeter is typically the first, and sometimes the only, personal interaction a guest encounters when they come to worship for the first time. It takes a guest just 30 seconds to form a first impression of our church, and they’ll usually decide within 7-10 minutes whether or not they will return. That’s before the music, prayers, or the church service even begins. The welcome a first-time guest receives from our greeters and all others they encounter may have the greatest impact on their decision to return a second time. This is why we must ensure our guests feel welcome, comfortable, and accepted. Excellent greeters really do make a difference!

Save the Date!

Sunday, October 29, the Hospitality Team is hosting the Fall Greeters Orientation in the fellowship hall from 12:00-1:30 pm. This orientation is provided specifically for all current greeters. A light luncheon will be provided. There is no charge, but registration is required to allow for planning purposes. We’ll share new ideas, vital information, and get to know each other, as we prepare for a new season of opportunities to live out the GUMC mission to be a welcoming faith community committed to loving God and loving others, serving Christ and sharing Him, transforming lives and making disciples.

The deadline to register is October 23. Reserve your seat today! Go to OPEN REGISTRATIONS on the church website. Locate Music & Worship Ministry. Select Fall Greeter Orientation, then complete and submit the registration form. Or you can scan this QR code from a mobile device:

Stewardship

isn't just about funding a budget; it's about igniting a passion for ministry that changes lives. Picture a Giving Path as your guide, leading you to grow in your giving and deepen your faith. The core focus of Pathways to Generosity revolves around two crucial questions:

Pathways to Generosity

1. Why should you embrace generosity?

2. Why should you give to your church?

Generosity is more than finances – it’s a spiritual journey. The act of giving or being generous is fundamentally a spiritual matter, transcending mere financial considerations. It begins with acknowledging the blessings bestowed upon us by God. Out of gratitude and thanksgiving, we are moved to give back to God as an act of worship. As God's children, created in His image, love and generosity are intrinsic to our nature. Pathways to Generosity extends an invitation to fully embrace the individuals we were designed to be by God. Generosity serves as a pathway to a deeper relationship with God.

But why give to your church specifically? Some may be generous elsewhere, unaware of the life-changing ministry unfolding within your church's walls. Pathways to Generosity unveils the transformative work happening through your church, inviting others to join in and make an impact. Together, we can participate in something greater than ourselves.

October 22 will be our first Pathways to Generosity Sunday where we will be embarking on a journey to explore, separately and together, what God wants for us in our giving. Pathways to Generosity will be an opportunity for each of us to consider how God has expressed generosity to us and then pray our campaign prayer, “God, where do You want me to be in my giving?” On the final Pathways to Generosity Sunday, November 19, we will be completing Estimate of Giving Cards during our worship services as an integral part of our worship together.

This will be a biblical, spiritual, inspirational experience designed to engage us on a journey of discovery. Each person and family will be asked to consider The Giving Path and where God may be leading them. The focus of this approach is not on the need of the church to fund a budget but on the need of each person to contribute proportionately from their resources as a part of his or her own spiritual maturity and discipleship of Christ. We are asking everyone to consider moving further along The Giving Path as a response to all that God has done for them. Whether it is to begin the journey by starting to give or to grow the percentage of your gift, the prayer, “God where do You want me to be in my giving?” will be our guide.

We will be embarking on this journey together to learn more about why we give and how your generosity through Germantown UMC is having an impact on people’s lives. It will be a special time together as we look inwardly at where God wants us to be.

Each month we recognize a volunteer or volunteers who makeanimpactby selflessly sharing their time and talents for the betterment of our church and community.

Children’s Ministry Volunteer, Laurie Pakis

If you walk into The Huddle on any given Sunday morning, you can almost be sure to find Laurie Pakis, a beloved and dedicated Children’s Ministry volunteer. Laurie started serving as a children’s Sunday school mentor/teacher when her oldest son, Tony, was in kindergarten. That was twenty-two years ago, and she has been teaching Sunday school ever since!

When asked why she continues to teach the children on Sunday mornings, she said, “I just love being around the kids and seeing them grow. It makes me happy.” She also commented that it brings her joy to see the GUMC children she mentored as kids, grow older and become young adults. She loves seeing them grow in their faith journey.

In 2008, Laurie was asked to be an assistant director for vacation bible school. She happily agreed, and continued in that role for 15 years! As an assistant director, she was instrumental in helping with decorations, set-up, administrative work, t-shirt sorting, and everything in between. Over the years, she has been an assistant VBS director for six different children’s ministry directors! Now that’s dedication! Laurie also currently serves on the GUWF Executive Committee as the treasurer and is a member of GUWF’s Faith Circle.

GUMC is truly blessed to have wonderful and dedicated volunteers such as Laurie!

CHURCH & SOCIETY Justice & Civil Rights

An overflow crowd welcomed Kevin Ritz to his home church on Sunday, August 20. Ritz was involved in the youth group at GUMC and began his presentation by sharing a sermon he had written and given for youth Sunday. In that sermon, he cited the influence of his parents, Sharon and Mike Ritz, and GUMC for igniting his passion for, and commitment to, public service, which propelled him to the position of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Memphis represents the Federal Government in legal matters in which the U.S. is party, including prosecution of federal criminal violations, prosecution and defense of civil cases, and collection of debts owed the Federal Government. Its mission is to uphold the rule of law, keep the district safe, and protect civil rights. Because of limited resources, the office is unable to

prosecute all federal crimes and therefore must establish priorities. Those include the prosecution of cases involving “switches” (illegal devices that can convert a gun into a machine gun); drug trafficking; and whitecollar crime. A new National Security & Civil Rights Unit focuses on federal hate crimes and civil rights violations, as well as violent extremism.

Ritz is guided by two principles in making decisions as to whether to prosecute: accountability and mercy & redemption, for which he cited biblical passages. He emphasized that the decision how and whether to charge someone is rarely a clear-cut one, so he and his team must rely on their best judgment. He then gave two hypothetical examples of typical cases and asked the crowd to weigh in on whether they would prosecute or allow a lesser sentence.

Church & Society thanks Kevin for returning “home” to speak and share his knowledge and insight with us.

GUMC’s Children’s Ministry is excited to announce that Hayley Heard has joined the staff as the Associate Director of Children’s Ministries Elementary. Continuing Callie Beaver’s role, she will be focused on programming for elementary-aged children assisting with Sunday School, Wednesday nights, and the planning of annual events.

Hayley is a lifelong Memphian, now residing in Germantown. She graduated from Briarcrest Christian School and Ole Miss, where she majored in hospitality management. For the last six years, Hayley has been the Director of Banquets and Events, as well as the Membership Director, for the Memphis Hunt and Polo Club. In this role, she planned all of the club events, from children’s birthday parties to large wedding receptions, and a little bit of everything in between. She has also previously worked in the event and fundraising department at Ducks Unlimited, as a financial advisor’s assistant, and as an assistant to the men’s clothing buyer at Oak Hall, where she met her now husband!

She and her husband, Graham, joined GUMC in May 2021 with their daughters, Virginia and Maggie. Since joining the church, Hayley has been an active member of Wesley 2.0, a VBS volunteer, a “Worship on Wednesday” volunteer, a VBS assistant director, and a cherub choir volunteer. Both Virginia (age 6) and Maggie (age 4) attend Farmington Elementary where Hayley is an active member of the PTO.

Hayley is excited about her new role in Children’s Ministry and is looking forward to leading the children of our church to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

Church Health’s Patient Assistance Program

Our patients have improved quality of life with worry–free prescriptions

It’s enough of a challenge for Memphians without health insurance to obtain high-quality, compassionate medical care; treatment with high-cost medications adds an additional financial burden and stress to their health care.

Our neighbors shouldn’t have to choose between affording their prescriptions and paying their bills. Underserved and uninsured Memphians can find hope in Church Health’s Patient Assistance Program (PAP), to help fill in the gaps of affording costly, brand–name prescriptions.

Church Health PAP is centered around what the name suggests, our patients. We don’t want them to return home without the care and treatment they need. The PAP team at Church Health Fernando Salazar, Sharee Edwards, Eduardo Urbina and Ellen Morris connects patients to the programs offered by pharmaceutical manufacturers. These programs help uninsured patients obtain necessary medications at no cost or minimal fees.

Our team streamlines the application process to access costly medications for treatment and health management. They also complete and submit patient applications to pharmaceutical programs for processing. The PAP team regularly meets with patients to complete eligibility applications, follows up to reestablish their eligibility, reminds them about refills, and requests refills on a patient’s behalf as needed.

Maria Ortiz needed her oral oncology medication refilled while receiving care at a specialty clinic. Her application to the pharmaceutical manufacturer’s assistance program had been incorrectly filed. Fernando identified this issue, and Maria’s application was resubmitted by Church Health PAP with the correct information for processing and approval.

“If I’m sick and not able to work, how can I earn my income?” Maria asked. “Thank you, God, because I found help. When my friends get in the same situation as me, I recommend Church Health and this program.”

Uninsured Memphians can stay on the path to wellness with Church Health’s PAP team steering patients to improved health, chronic disease management, and improved quality of life.

Damien Morris is being treated for chronic conditions including diabetes, respiratory issues and high blood pressure. He is free from the mental burden of planning how to afford costly prescriptions. He’s at ease relying on Church Health to manage his health needs.

“That’s a blessing to wake up every day knowing I have help getting my prescriptions,” Damien said. “Once, I ran out of my prescriptions for a whole week. I called Church Health, talked with a nurse, and had my medications filled quickly. Everything was taken care of. Without my medication, I’m not the same. It’s a comfort when I can get back to normal.”

The work and service of our PAP team is never complete. The persistent management of our patient’s accessibility to critical and essential medicine is a daily act of compassionate care.

“A majority of our patients are diabetics and on some kind of insulin,” the PAP team’s medication coordinator, Sharee Edwards explained. “One vial of insulin in major pharmacies is around $200–$300. Who can afford that, especially living paycheck to paycheck?”

The team navigates 7,800 prescriptions each year, saving about 9.3 million dollars for uninsured patients who are enrolled. For the past year, the team improved efficiency of their key processes for completing patient paperwork while a patient is on site. The time to enroll a patient has been reduced from an average of 56 days to nine.

The top five medications currently prescribed through Church Health’s PAP treat Type I and II diabetes and airway disease. These medications enable our neighbors to manage their blood sugar levels and breathe easier, improving their quality of life.

Our patients can live without the burden of choosing health care or quality living because of your investment in a healthier Memphis. Our shared belief in caring for others as we all like to be treated allows our neighbors to see brighter days. Support of Church Health and its resources allows others to experience life-altering care and reconnects those struggling with their health to quality wellness for a healthier Memphis.

Music Ministry

GUMC Welcomes André Duvall as Associate Music Director—Organist/Pianist

André Duvall comes to GUMC after 10 years on staff at Mullins United Methodist Church, where he served as Organist, Pianist, and Director of the Mullins Ringers handbell choir. In Memphis, he maintains an independent piano lesson studio for students from grade school through adult, teaches music in the Conservatory at Lausanne Collegiate School, and works as a freelance solo and collaborative pianist in the Mid-South region. He enjoys performing with local musicians and organizations for numerous public and private events, including working with instrumentalists each semester at U of M’s School of Music.

André is active in several musical and educational organizations in the community, which gave rise to leadership roles as Dean and Sub Dean of the Memphis Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (2016-2019) and President of the Greater Memphis Music Teachers Association (2021-2023), the region’s MTNA affiliate. He continues to serve on the boards of these organizations in supporting roles. A founding member and current treasurer of the West TN Handbell Association, he co-organizes the annual River City Ring Handbell Festival, and hosted this event at Mullins up through 2020 (thank you to GUMC for participating every year!). He has served twice as the clinician for Arkansas’ children’s handbell & chime state festival, including “Xtreme Ring” 2018, and led a children’s chime choir at White Station Elementary in partnership with Mullins.

André grew up in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He first encountered the United Methodist Church in third grade, when a friend invited him to VBS. That autumn, he returned to the church, First UMC of NLR, to try the Rainbow Ringers children’s hand chime choir. He joined the UMC as a part of the sixth-grade confirmation class, and continued to ring in the church’s middle school, high school, and adult bell choirs. The United Methodist Church is where André eventually met his first mentors in piano and organ, where he gained formative experiences in service playing, and where he developed appreciation for its special, meaningful role in worship.

André completed musical studies at Henderson State University, the University of Memphis, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While living in N.C. he worked in various musical settings,

including pianist of UNCG’s Schola Cantorum, pianist of the UNCG Wind Ensemble, teaching class piano at UNCG, and eventually Coordinator of Class Piano. Prior to his time at Mullins, André has served churches as a substitute organist for a range of denominations, and as the primary organist/pianist for United Methodist congregations in Greensboro, Memphis, and Central Arkansas. He has been an adjudicator and presenter for several keyboard festivals and MTA chapters in the South, and has taught piano and music theory on the faculty of the UNCG Summer Music Camp since 2013. In addition to musical activities, André enjoys hiking, bicycling, cooking, travel, and exploring the many cultural activities and natural areas our region has to offer.

André is honored to be invited to serve Germantown UMC. He is grateful to Eva McPeters for her encouragement to join the staff and congratulates her on completing a legacy of time-honored service. He welcomes the opportunity to make music with Todd Wison, with whom he worked numerous times as a substitute at Bartlett UMC and rang alongside at various handbell events. André has great respect for Todd and his approach to music ministry. He’s excited to get to work with the children’s chime choir, to serve with his former minister at Mullins, Rev. Scott Alford, as well as getting to know Rev. Tim Carpenter and other staff, choir, and church members. André will cherish the incredible relationships forged at Mullins and will always admire their commitment and kindness to the community. He is now looking forward to being a part of the vibrant and growing ministry programs at GUMC!

Membership

Katie and McClure Parham

Germantown United Methodist Church welcomed Katie and McClure Parham into membership on Sunday, June 25, at our Prism worship service. Katie joined by transfer of her membership from Trinity UMC, Greeneville, TN. McClure joined by transfer of his membership from Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, Knoxville, TN.

When asked what about Germantown UMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied, “We love that GUMC is Christ-centered, and the pastors focus on the Bible in their sermons. We’ve found this approach isn’t necessarily a given in a church. The people at Prism have always been so welcoming. After attending services for a while, GUMC started to feel like home.”

Erin and John Stiles

Germantown United Methodist Church welcomed Erin and John Stiles into membership on Sunday, September 3, at our 8:30 traditional worship service. They joined by transfer of their memberships from St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Prospect, Kentucky. Their Welcome Friends are Courtney and Matt Lubozynski.

When asked what about Germantown UMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied, “The sense of Community, and family atmosphere, and the children’s ministry.”

ANNUAL CINNAMON ROLL BAKE FOR MISSIONS

On Sunday, October 1, and Sunday, October 15, we will be on hand to take your Cinnamon Roll Bake pre-orders in the Fellowship Hall and Owings Life Enrichment Center (OLEC)! We bake a limited number of rolls from scratch, so it is very important that you pre-order. The cost is only $12 per dozen and payable by cash, check, or credit card (including a small handling fee). Pickup will be in the OLEC gym on October 17, 18, and 19. You will choose your specific pickup date/time when pre-ordering, and a reminder will be sent.

We welcome baking helpers! Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and lots of laughter with women of the church on our baking days, October 17-19, in the OLEC. Each baking day morning, we make the dough from scratch and set it aside to rise. The dough is dipped in warm butter and dredged in cinnamon, and then it is knotted, proofed, and baked. The rolls may be frozen and reheated. Be the first to smell these warm, sweet, delectable rolls come out of the oven!

Contact Stephanie Adams at (901)488-4748 or monacodog@aol.com to sign up to help on baking days. No experience is required, and we have great teachers!

The proceeds from your purchases help the many missions of Germantown United Women in Faith.

Thank you for your support!

November Speaker Luncheon

Nov

14, 2023 | 11:30 am Fellowship Hall

All women are invited to join us for a catered meal, warm fellowship, and an inspirational message from Rev. Mimi White at our GUWF November Luncheon on November 14, 2023, at 11:30 am in the Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall.

Pastor Mimi White loves being a part of the Germantown United Methodist Church (GUMC) family where she serves as lead pastor of the alternative worship service, Prism, and performs with the Prism Riot Band.

Mimi graduated from the University of Memphis where she majored in Business and Real Estate. She is a published author and has worked in the medical industry, the pet industry, the arts, and education. She has been a corporate trainer for Medtronic and a career counselor for executives. Mimi also sang lead with a variety of bands before deciding to devote herself to the service of God and others.

After entering seminary, Mimi led a Formation for Ministry class for first-year students. She served as a Hospice Chaplain for Crossroads Hospice, as an Intern Chaplain for the Veterans Administration, and as a member of the Kairos Prison Ministry. Mimi graduated from Memphis Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity and a Certification in Wesleyan Studies from the Methodist House of Studies. She is a United Methodist Ordained Elder and is trained in Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Behavioral Health.

Following seminary, Mimi served as the Director of Recovery at St. John’s UMC in Memphis and was instrumental in helping create “The Way House” which opened in January of 2021 and continues hosting twenty-two recovery meetings and offering peer counseling to the community.

Mimi loves live music, kayaking, ballroom dancing, painting, and gardening. She has a firefighter son who is the father of her two grandchildren. A menagerie of pets completes her family. One day Mimi dreams of raising alpacas in the foothills of the Smokies or the Blue Ridge Mountains and finessing the Cha-Cha at a ballroom dance competition!

Contact: mwhite@germantownumc.org

Please join us as we learn more about Rev. White’s ministry and outreach through Prism. Her commitment to serving others is a wonderful example of doing “Everything in Love.”

Germantown United Methodist Preschool (GUMP)

Fall is in the air, and GUMP continues to be off to a wonderful start! GUMP takes such care in serving our children and families. We strive to partner with each family, meeting them where they are, supporting their cares and concerns, and celebrating the joy and wonder happening in their lives. GUMP invests in the children that attend our preschool each day, but we also support and love the family. Last month we completed our fall parent/teacher conferences. We value the opportunities we are given each day!

Our tiniest friends continue to settle into routine and transitions and continue to explore the wonder and experiences of their classroom. Our older preschoolers are enjoying new cognitive challenges and learning to choose things of interest within each classroom center. We have begun chapel with Ms. Natalie and are learning more about Jesus through lessons and songs. Shannon Lenoir Portraits came to take individual photos of all our friends, to capture those moments in time such precious, and silly, portraits were made!

Fascinating things are happening at GUMP to build developmentally strong children cognitively, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our friends through play! Our multi-sensory approach includes the use of Handwriting Without Tears. Our friends pictured below are engaged in building “Mat Man” from this program. Handwriting Without Tears offers a variety of ways for children to learn pre-writing and writing skills in an age appropriate, fun way! We would love for you to learn about the wonderful things happening here! If you would like further information, please contact the preschool office at 901-753-3109.

Youth

On September 10, Germantown UMC Youth kicked off our first Element of the year! We started the night off with some delicious food from Swanky’s tacos and then began our water day! We had a 24-foot water slide, with an attachable slip-in slide, as well as over 750 water balloons for our EPIC water balloon fight! We had quite a turnout for our kickoff as well, with over 50 youth in attendance.

In addition to our Element kickoff, the other aspects of our weekly programming have begun as well! Synergy and Synago are once again meeting at their regular times of 6:00-7:15 pm on Wednesdays for Synergy (Middle School) and 7:15-8:30 pm on Wednesdays for Synago. We are beginning a study of James in Synergy and a study of Romans in Synago. Any middle schooler or high schooler is welcome to join–we meet at the Prescott House, which is to the right of the OLEC. Look for the porch lights and the gaga pit!

We have also started back with our High School

Tuesday morning Prayer Breakfast. This dedicated group of teenagers meet before school every Tuesday at 6:30 am to eat breakfast and discuss the Bible. We are currently going through a devotional book on the Gospel of John. Meetings are at the Pavilion behind Houston High, but you do not have to go to Houston to attend!

Children’s Ministry

A Special Note from Callie Beaver

Dear Families,

I am writing to let you know that I am stepping down from my role as a Director of Children's Ministry at Germantown UMC. It has been a true honor and pleasure to serve the kids of our church for the past 8 1/2 years, and my decision was such a hard one. I love your kids and the families at our church so very much. I will continue to serve as a volunteer where my time allows.

Join us for Sunday School | Sundays 9:30-10:30 am

Children in K-5th grades meet in the Huddle (room 240) on Sunday mornings for large group lesson, then proceed to individual classrooms in the education wing for small group activities.

Preschool and younger meet in the Hamilton Nursery to the north of the Sanctuary.

Parents: If you have not done so already, please be sure to fill out a new registration form for the 2023-3024 school year so that we have all your updated contact information. You may do so online at germantownumc.org under Open Registrations. Also, please let us know if you are not receiving our children’s ministry emails, since this will remain our primary form of communication.

Be sure to follow us on our Facebook page for updates at Germantown United Methodist Children’s Ministry.

Third Grade Bible Presentations

Third Grade Bible Sunday, a time-honored GUMC tradition, took place Sunday, September 24, during worship services. 18 GUMC third graders received personalized, embossed Bibles during the presentations. Two days prior, these same students attended a Friday Night Bible Retreat at the church. They enjoyed pizza and snacks, energy-burning Bible-centric games, and a special worship service focusing on God’s Word being our light. We compared Bibles to flashlights. Just as a flashlight left in our backpack cannot provide light in darkness, a Bible left unread on a shelf cannot provide guidance and light on your journey through life.

Children’s Ministry

Join us for WOW- Worship on Wednesdays

Every Wed from 6-7:30 pm (no class Oct 11 Fall Break)

What is WOW? It’s our mid-week program that gives kids a chance to get together for food, fun, and fellowship. It’s our children’s ministry equivalent of “youth group.” Dinner will be served in the Fellowship Hall from 6-6:30 pm, followed by child-friendly worship and small group activities and games. Third graders will split off from the rest of the small groups for a special program with Ms. Janice Cates and Ms. Carla McCrary called “Learning to Use your Bible.” It’s a great opportunity for the third graders to become familiar with the Bibles that were recently presented to them. Preschoolers will have an opportunity for dinner and age-appropriate lessons as well. Parents of preschoolers are welcome to grab some food in the Fellowship Hall and take it to the nursery for their preschool-aged child. Dinners are $3. Registration by Tuesdays at noon is required so we can plan for food accordingly.
