Summer is quickly approaching, and the church is adjusting to summer hours for worship and Sunday school. During the summer, Sunday schools are encouraged to meet at 9:00 am, with worship at 10:30 am. The two traditional services will meet as one, in the sanctuary, and the Prism service will continue at the OLEC. Times are being changed to allow for earlier departure times and occasional opportunities for churchwide gatherings after worship.

This 10-week schedule was proposed by the Worship Committee, as a way of having us together during a season when vacations and other commitments often make attendance lighter. But, by coming together, we may be able to find opportunities to increase attendance.

The proposal was brought to the Lay Ministry Council, which made it a priority.

The Pastor’s Council then approved it to go to the Church Board, and the Board approved it at its last meeting.

The new summer schedule will call for all of us to be flexible and accept a little change, but the potential benefit is worth the temporary change. This is only for a 10-week period in the summer from June 1 to August 3. On August 10, we will return to our regular schedules.

Certainly, the primary way for members to provide the financial resources for the work of our church is through normal weekly giving, such as offerings during worship, online donations, or checks mailed to the church office. Recently, you may have seen a colorful brochure outlining our annual operational needs. If not, it can be found on our website by clicking here or scanning the QR code below.

The expenses for programming, facilities maintenance, congregational care, mission, communication, and routine administrative costs are vital for GUMC’s witness in the community and all around the world.

These ministries cannot happen without the faithful generosity of all of us.

GUMC Annual Financial Need Report

I am occasionally asked about things needed outside our annual spending plan—things that may need to be replaced or items that will improve efficiency or add value to our ministry. Generously giving above and beyond our regular offerings through, for example, a required minimum distribution from a retirement plan or a gift of stock, can often provide the resources for larger, one-time purchases.

A list of a few such things is below. Everything on this “wish list” has been discussed in a committee or among staff and church members at some point along the way. Each has merit, and perhaps one may spark interest in someone, or a group, to find ways to help the church attain it. These are in no particular order and consist of a variety of price points.                

Admittedly, not everything on this list is exciting and fun, but each item holds great value to GUMC’s ministry. As we seek to take the next step along the giving path, might there be a need that you, or a group of which you are a part, feel called to adopt by contributing or creating a fundraiser? Mimi White This month, at Prism, we begin a new series of messages inspired by Bob Goff’s book: Everybody Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People. This is a timely topic as we continue through the Easter Season remembering the example Jesus set for us. Here’s an excerpt from Bob’s book to give an idea of where we are headed. He says: “It’s easy to love kind, lovely, humble people. What I’ve come to realize, though, is that I was avoiding the people I didn’t understand and the ones who lived differently than me.

Here’s why: some of them creeped me out. Sure, I was polite to them, but sadly, I’ve spent my whole life avoiding the people Jesus spent His whole life engaging. God’s idea isn’t that we would just give and receive love but that we could actually become love. People who are becoming love see the beauty in others even when their off-putting behavior makes for a pretty weird mask. What Jesus told his friends can be summed up this way: He wants us to love everybody, always – and start with the people who creep us out. The truth is, we probably creep them out as much as they do us.”

College Ministry Lauren Wright Hobbs Nursing Scholarship – 2025 A scholarship has been established through Germantown United Methodist Church to benefit a student from our church, who is pursuing a degree in nursing.

This scholarship is named for Lauren Wright Hobbs, who loved serving others in the nursing profession. Lauren was a long-time member of our church, who lost her battle with cervical cancer at the age of 29 in October of 2013.

Recipients should be members of GUMC and attending nursing school now or in the coming fall semester. The $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to the student who best fits the model that Lauren exemplified in her love of nursing.

Applications may be obtained by contacting Karen Oppenheim at karen.oppenheim@gmail.com. All completed applications must be received by Friday, June 20. The scholarship committee will review and select the recipient prior to July 1, 2025. The scholarship will be awarded for the 2025-2026 school year.

Donations can be made to this scholarship fund by writing your check to GUMC, with Lauren Wright Hobbs Scholarship noted in the memo line. 2025 is the twelfth year for this scholarship, that is dedicated to the memory of Lauren and her love of nursing. The Emmaus Sunday school class is honored to establish this scholarship in her name.

Children’s Choirs Concert and 5th Grade Choir Recognition Sunday, May 4

May 4, 2025 promises to be a wonderful day at GUMC! The Cherub, Alleluia, and Hosanna choirs offer their Spring Children’s Choirs Concert. Alleluia and Hosanna Choirs (kindergarten-5th grades) will present a musical, “Rescue in the Night,” by Allen Pote, which highlights the story of Daniel in the lion’s den. This musical offers the opportunity to meet the conceited King Darius, the conniving Advisors, and, of course, Daniel! There are over a dozen songs in the musical, most of which feature a soloist, duet, or trio of student performers. The children have been working on this since December and would love to have a large and loving audience!! Wonderful music will certainly be shared and received.

Another feature of this program is the presentation of hymnals to fifth graders. This is a recognition of our fifth grade students that will, next year, be Testimony Youth Choir participants.

This is also an encouragement from the congregation that these youngsters continue to sing and offer their gift of song to the Lord. Please come and offer your gifts of presence and love to these young Choristers!

Coping with the Death of a Loved One Monday, May 12 | 10:30 am or 6 pm Room 339 (Main Building)

“Church is the place of weddings, births, and deaths. It is a place where we can be involved as community to help rejoice and heal.”

Death comes to us all, whether it is the death of others or our own. Yet, we shy away from talking about it.

While, as Christians, we understand that death is not the end, it does leave those behind experiencing a void unlike anything they could imagine. Whether we experience loss or someone close to us does, it is helpful to have ways to cope or to support others.

Grief is different for everyone. Some adjust as they go through the five stages of grief in the classic order, while others do not experience the five stages of grief in any particular order, and some do not experience the five stages at all.

However grief is experienced, we have tools to support you.

Join us for Coping with the Death of a Loved One on Monday, May 12, at 10:30 am or 6 pm, in Room 339 (main building.) There is no cost, just register online at germantownumc.org to attend. (Both sessions will be the same.) This is the rescheduled seminar.

You will have an opportunity to listen or discuss and come away with some ways to cope with grief and to support others who are grieving. Yolanda Toney, Director of Care Ministries & Certified Lay Minister certified in Grief Care, will facilitate the seminar.

Regularity of contact would be determined by the person affected by the loss and you. Contact might include calls, notes, or visits.

Note/Card Writing Ministry - Once a month or less, you will write notes to assigned persons. Adults, youth, and children may contribute to this ministry.

Calling Ministry - Monthly or bi-monthly (determined by you) you will call assigned persons to check in with them. These people may be ill, shut-ins, or may be absent from church for several Sundays.

Meal Ministry - Occasionally persons or families may appreciate a meal during a difficult time. You would make the meal or purchase a meal and deliver it.

Care for the Caregiver - Give a caregiver at least an hour break. Sign up to be contacted if/when needed.

Leigh Adams For the past several years, Leigh Adams has been a shining example of dedication and compassion within our church community. Her contributions to Children's Ministry are invaluable, enriching the lives of countless children. Leigh consistently goes above and beyond, teaching elementary Sunday school with enthusiasm and expertise. She's a vital presence at church events, always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Her responsiveness and innovative ideas are a constant source of inspiration. Most importantly, she possesses a remarkable ability to connect with children, creating a joyful and nurturing learning environment. Leigh's willingness to step up and fill in for Natalie and Hayley when they're unavailable speaks volumes about her commitment and reliability.

Leigh's dedication doesn't stop at Children's Ministry. She also generously volunteers her time with Room in the Inn (RITI), demonstrating her commitment to serving those in need within our wider community. Furthermore, Leigh and her daughter, Zoey, are active members of our church's Care Ministry, crafting heartfelt letters and cards to offer comfort and support to those who are ill, grieving, or facing difficult circumstances. Their thoughtful gestures remind us of the power of simple acts of kindness and the importance of community support.

Leigh’s unwavering commitment to service is a true inspiration to us all. Thank you, Leigh, for your dedication and for making such a positive impact on our church and community!

Thank you! from the GUWF Children’s Consignment Committee Despite the rainy, stormy weather on April 3-5, GUWF Children’s Consignment Sale was able to raise almost $24,000 for women and children’s missions, provide a place to buy good quality children’s items, and donate over 4,500 items to local charities after the sale. Wow! God is good!

We couldn’t have done any of this without the help of our many volunteers, consigners, and shoppers! Thank you for braving the weather and showing up to work alongside our team, as we all strive to be… ...a welcoming community of faith committed to : Loving God and loving others, Serving Christ and sharing Him; Transforming lives, and making disciples.

Meet Prism Hospitality team member and veteran, Jerry Shaw.

Jerry was born in Georgia, and, just one week later, his father was transferred to Lübeck, Germany. There, Jerry spent the next 15 years with his family. At age 15, his father was stationed back in the United States, and the family relocated to Savannah, Georgia.

At 17, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army, beginning his military career as a combat medic. While in the army, he completed Physician Assistant School and went on to serve his country for 22 years. His final station was at Fort Campbell in Clarksville, TN, where he eventually retired from the military.

After army retirement, Jerry worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, before moving to Jackson, TN, where he continued his career. In Jackson, he met the love of his life, Marian.

Jerry currently works at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has served as a reserve officer with the Germantown Police Department for the past 11 years.

He and Marian regularly attend Prism worship service and are members of the Agape Sunday school class. Jerry also volunteers on the Prism Hospitality Team and serves on the Safety Team.

Rev. Linda Gabriel Elder Care Minister

One of my favorite movies from childhood (and if truth be told, also now) is Mary Poppins. There’s a scene where the gas lights are lit by a man.

There’s a story from those days of a father bringing his son to the city for the first time. In the gathering darkness the child watched as a lamp lighter climbed his ladder, turned on the gas, and lit each lamp. One by one, the street lamps cast their light, and the child looked up to his father and said, “Look Daddy, that man is punching holes in the darkness.”

We have just celebrated Easter. We have just celebrated Jesus’ resurrection! Jesus’ resurrection has punched holes in the darkness that our world often seems to create. God continues to shine light in our world, and for this I am thankful.

I find that as I grow older, every holiday brings with it feelings of joy and a bit of sadness: joy, with the present and memories of the whole family being together for every holiday; sadness, because I’ve had to say good bye to many loved ones who have died to this life, and because much of my family lives out of state, and we’re not able to be together. However, the ability to remember is a gift that fills me with deep gratitude. These memories give me energy when I recall them. I find myself smiling, even if there are tears in my eyes, as I recall memories. I read, years ago, that “it’s necessary for all of us to gather up our good, life-giving memories and to carry them in the pockets of our hearts. Whenever we take them out and look upon them, we can be filled with hope. As we gaze upon the past goodness of our life, we can believe again in its future possibilities.” Remembering my past blessings helps me to see how deeply involved God is with my life.

Memories can be experiences of resurrection. I pray that, this Easter Season, you will celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and can remember what’s been and share it with those you love.

Elder Care Ministries is here for you! Aging and caring for an aging family member can be tricky and stressful. Please know you don’t have to figure it out on your own. We can help you find the resources you need to deal with the changes that aging brings…be it health care, caregivers, home Communion, changes in living locations, walkers, etc. We also have a wonderful resource I encourage everyone to work through, called Five Wishes. Five Wishes is a document that you fill out with your wishes for healthcare and end of life issues. We have copies in our office, and, if you’d like for me to go through it with you, I’d be honored.

What is GUMC’s Elder Care Ministry? With an amazing team of volunteers, these are ways our ministry supports our aging church members.

Homebound Ministries - Our team reaches out to church members who are homebound through:

Flower Ministry - Volunteers make Sunday altar flowers into smaller floral arrangements, which are delivered by another team of volunteers, to bless our homebound members.

Home Communion Ministry - Volunteers serve Communion to designated members who are homebound.

Visits and calls to older adults who are unable to attend church. These visits may be at their residence, in-patient hospital/rehab, or senior living community.

Note: There are times that our volunteers who deliver flowers are out of town or have other obligations.

We would welcome any of our members who would like to volunteer as a substitute flower deliverer.

The Mission Organizations GUMC Supports Most GUMC members are either involved or know about several of the mission organizations supported by our church.

However, some may not know the depth of our outreach. Below is a list of organizations supported by GUMC and their purpose. You can find more information about all of them – and contribute – on the GUMC website.

ALTURAS – Founded and led by GUMC Missionary, Amy Speake, Alturas provides food and schooling for children, and job skills for women in the Lomas del Rio slum.

Founded in 1987, CHURCH HEALTH provides holistic health care for the uninsured working poor.

CROSSLINK equips mission teams with medical supplies, reading glasses, and low-cost medicine.

GOLDEN CROSS SENIOR MINISTRIES is dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-income seniors living in Wesley Living facilities. Programs provide basic care items, social outings, and holiday meals.

GUMC KENYA MISSION TEAM supports organizations in Central Kenya that focus on education and the needs of orphans and vulnerable children and families, rehabilitation centers for children and adults, a center for orphaned children, home builds, medical camps, and supplies and funding for schools.

HANNAH’S HOPE is a loving ministry dedicated to the healing of God’s children (pregnant women, families seeking to adopt, and children who need to be adopted) through adoption and pregnancy counseling.

HOPEWORKS strives to provide HOPE and a JOB. Programs include English for immigrants, high school equivalency, basic job skills, and holistic re-entry for the incarcerated. The workforce team helps connect motivated workers with life-changing employment.

MANNA HOUSE offers sanctuary, coffee and conversation, showers, and clothes for those on the streets and others in poverty.

Since its founding in 1933, the METHODIST HEALTHCARE AUXILIARY has served Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare in emphasizing the personal touch to its patients, family members, associates, and physician staff by providing volunteer services and donating needed resources.

Since 1975, MOUNTAIN T.O.P. has served as a strategic community partner in Gundy County, TN, focusing on reducing substandard housing, supporting lifelong learning and leadership, and promoting overall wellness. Through Christian community and faith-based relationships, it meets the physical, spiritual, social, and emotional needs of the people it encounters.

PROJECT TRANSFORMATION – Its mission is to transform communities by engaging children, college-age young adults, and churches in purposeful relationships. It operates a summer literacy camp, at Centenary UMC, to enhance the reading and social/emotional skills of children in the community.

REELFOOT RURAL MINISTRIES provides resources and offers hope to the residents of Northwest Tennessee through a grocery distribution center, dental and eyecare clinics, disaster assistance, Christmas toy store, school supplies, and Backpack Buddies. ...Continued 12

ROOM IN THE INN partners with faith communities to shelter individuals during the coldest months of the year. At its main campus, it houses the medically fragile and partners with MIFA to shelter homeless families.

UNITED METHODIST NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS partner with faith communities to provide services in three focus areas: education, hunger ministry, and gun violence reduction through the Soul Force initiative.

WEEKEND FOOD PROGRAM, founded by GUMC member Barbara Schanson, partners with the Mid-South Food Bank to provide bags of food for food-insecure children who may otherwise go hungry when not in school.

For over 10 years, YOUTH LEADERSHIP OF MEMPHIS has developed at-risk boys into leaders through a unique program of lawncare service that combines work, mentorship, and economic development to teach life skills and impart character.

ZOE EMPOWERS is a United Methodist organization that empowers orphaned children in Africa to move beyond begging and charity. After completing a three-year program, they become entrepreneurs who can support themselves and their siblings while becoming confident contributors to their communities. GUMC, through individuals and Sunday school classes, has supported Zoe in Kenya since 2008.

Our Handy Helpers are waiting for your call…

The Handy Helpers Ministry Team, sponsored by the Older Adult Council, lends a “helping hand” to older adults in our church who need assistance with small repair and maintenance jobs around the house.

WHAT TYPE OF JOBS DO HANDY HELPERS DO? • Light maintenance and repairs, including small carpentry jobs, such as malfunctioning doors, locks, or windows.

• Minor electrical work, such as replacing light switches and light bulbs.

• Replacing smoke alarm batteries.

• Minor plumbing work, such as working on “running” toilets or leaky faucets.

• Other miscellaneous jobs are considered on an individual basis.

If you are planning a larger job for your house (repainting, wood replacement, remodeling) and would like a second opinion of what really needs to be done, call Handy Helpers, and they will send someone out to take a look and talk to you about it.

Handy Helpers do not work on large or small appliances, roofs, home decorating, or on jobs requiring tall ladders.

WHAT DOES THIS SERVICE COST? The Handy Helpers service charges only for parts and materials used in the repair. There is NO charge for labor.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE HANDY HELPERS SERVICE: You must be a member of Germantown United Methodist Church, have homeowners liability insurance, and be over 60 years of age.

Don’t Forget the May Brown Bag Lunch Program!

The “GUMC Attic Treasures Roadshow” will be Friday, May 2, 2025 in the fellowship hall.

Todd Stricklin, local interior designer and owner of Todd & Company Estate Sales, will be available to give you an estimated value of jewelry, china, art, books, fabric, silver, toys, games, dolls, and anything else you can carry in your hands. You may bring only four items—no pictures of items, vinyl records, coins, stamps, Orientalia, large pieces, or furniture, please. The program starts at 11 am with lunch at noon. A Bronx Tale tells the coming-of-age story of an Italian-American boy, Calogero, as he grows into a teenager on the streets of the Bronx, in the socially turbulent 1960s.

He gets taken under the wing of neighborhood mobster, Sonny. Sonny initiates the boy into the ways of gangland life, in direct conflict with his straight-arrow bus driver father. But, when Calogero falls for his African-American classmate, Jane, the repercussions threaten the entire neighborhood. This musical adaptation explores themes of respect, loyalty, and values. GUMC’s Annual

Easter Egg Hunt On Saturday, April 19, GUMC hosted its annual Easter Egg Hunt in the beautiful McVay Gardens. With 1,200 people in attendance, the morning was filled with laughter, connection, and countless photo-worthy moments. Children delighted in hunting for eggs, riding the train, visiting the petting zoo, snapping pictures with the Easter Bunny, and enjoying a variety of fun-filled activities.

A heartful THANK YOU to all our adult and youth volunteers who scattered 7,000 eggs, set up décor, ran the stations, and helped clean up! We couldn’t do it without you!

Their last day of teaching for the year will be May 18. Be sure to show your appreciation and gratitude for their dedication to the children at our church! Starting May 25, all elementary students will meet together in the Huddle (room 240) for summer Sunday school. We will need adult volunteers to help in the Huddle at this time. Lakeshore Camp June 16-21 (Dorothy Rogers will be camp dean) July 20-26 (Kristen Stonebrook will be camp dean) A crew from GUMC is heading to Lakeshore for fun and fellowship. These designated weeks are for elementary (ages 8-12) and middle school (ages 12-14) students. GUMC members, Dorothy Rogers and Kristen Stonebrook, will be the deans of camp this summer! In addition, many of our youth will be serving as camp counselors. If you are interested in attending this week, please register through Lakeshore’s website (https://lakeshorecamp.org/).

Lakeshore has an abundance of opportunities for all campers; there are a variety of camps offered all summer long! There are camps for people with special needs, as well as camps for people who have suffered traumatic experiences. There is a camp for people who love to fish, a camp for people who love aquatics, a camp for the arts, and a camp for those who love living in the wilderness. There is even a camp for people who love board games! There is a camp for everyone, so go to their website and take a peek!

Worship Reminder We hope that you will bring your elementary students (and younger children, too, if you wish) to worship with you each week. Remember that children are always welcomed at our services! For our traditional services, we have children’s bulletins and worship bags in the cabinet on the east side of the narthex. Please return your worship bag to the bin after the service. The Hamilton Nursery is open during all worship services for children who have not yet entered kindergarten. There is also a nursing mother/quiet room available in the nursery.

Music & Arts Camp Week 1

“Let’s Rock!”

June 23-27 | 9 am-3 pm For kids entering 2nd - 6th grades in Fall 2025

Children will meet each day to prepare for a performance for parents/families/friends at the end of the week. The children will perform “Let’s Rock!,” a musical that reminds us that the Christian life is not a solo act; we are all the body of Christ. Ms. Cheryl McClurg is the director for this camp. Children will be provided with scripts, props, and costumes. They will bring their own lunch each day. This camp is limited to the first 25 children signed up. The cost is $150/child. Scholarships are available by contacting Natalie Adkinson.

Elementary Mission Camp July 7-11 | 9:30 am-3 pm For kids entering 5th and 6th grade In this hands-on camp, we will explore three specific types of mission: inner-church mission, urban mission, and rural mission. Each child will have a chance to experience different types of work, hopefully creating an appetite for missional work. Some days, we will make our lunches here at church, and, other days, we will explore some Memphis eateries. We will finish each day with some seriously fun gaga ball or other games at Prescott House.

Space is limited to the first 24 children registered. Cost is $150/child (which includes all activities, transportation, food, and a T-shirt.)

Confirmation Sunday Last month, we had ten sixth-grade confirmands join our church. Of these confirmands, three were also baptized!

These students have worked very hard to grow in their understanding of their faith. Every Sunday morning, they met to discuss the teachings of John Wesley, the Methodist church, and the Old and New Testament. They have also been extremely involved in our Wednesday night middle school discussion group, as well as our Sunday night Element youth group. As a final culmination of all of these lessons, the students met for a weekend-long retreat. We spent Saturday at GUMC to prepare the students for the process of Confirmation, and Reverend Tim also gave a lesson on the importance of the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation. With a greater understanding of their place in the church, these youth finally joined the church on Sunday, April 6. We look forward to continuing the faith journeys of these new members of our church!

We, at GUMP, are thankful to be serving as a mission of GUMC for 50 years! On Friday, March 28, 2025, we celebrated this huge milestone at GUMP’s 50th birthday party in the OLEC parking lot, with over 200 people in attendance. It was such a fun evening. GUMP is grateful for Marc Tate and the support of his time and donation of the yummy Ben and Jerry’s ice cream!

All our little friends loved it!

GUMP families and staff enjoyed the delicious grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and birthday cupcakes. The children enjoyed a petting zoo, train rides, face painting, balloon animals, a photo booth, and a special visit from some magical princesses and a spider hero. The weather was perfect, and all the families, teachers, and staff enjoyed celebrating this special event!
