A Season of Gratitude

November wraps us in a spirit of thanksgiving, blending reflection and celebration through All Saints' Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day, and the beginning of Advent. Each observance invites us to pause, honor, and give thanks for the blessings and sacrifices that shape our lives.

On November 2, All Saints' Sunday invites us to honor the saints both revered figures and unsung believers who lived with quiet faith. Deeply rooted in Christian tradition, this day includes worship, prayers, and the lighting of candles to remember those faithful members of the church who have died in the last year. It is a time to give thanks for their enduring examples of kindness and courage, which inspire us to live with greater heart and purpose.

On Sunday, November 9, we will recognize Veterans' Day in our worship service, a tribute to those who served in the U.S. armed forces. Originally called Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I, November 11 now celebrates all veterans. This day reminds us to value the cost of freedom and the service men and women who have served to help protect that freedom.

Sunday, November 23, we will recognize Thanksgiving. Grounded in remembrance of the 1621 Plymouth harvest feast, and formalized by Lincoln’s proclamation in 1863, it is a time of reflecting on our blessings from God. More than simply enjoying turkey and pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving fosters gratitude for God’s gifts of health, family, and simple joys in life.

On November 30, we enter the season of Advent, in which we begin to live in expectation of Christ’s Coming, both his Incarnation that we celebrate at Christmas and in his promised Second Coming to bring God’s kingdom to fullness.

These November days create a tapestry of gratitude, binding remembrance with celebration and praise with expectation. November echoes Psalm 100:4-5: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever.” A chord of thankfulness runs through the month, urging us to embrace gratitude as a practice that builds community and hope. From honoring the faithful to saluting veterans, from sharing meals to expecting Jesus, these traditions remind us to cherish the past and present.

May this month be a season of gratitude.

Rev. Dr. Scott Alford | salford@germantownumc.org

Generosity is more than a financial decision. It’s a spiritual journey and a way to grow in our discipleship. Giving faithfully also reflects a heart transformed by grace.

As a community, we’ve seen the power of generous giving. We’ve watched lives change through shared meals, volunteer efforts, and financial gifts that supported missions, local outreach, and those in need. But growth is part of every journey, and we believe God is calling each of us to take the next step in our generosity.

So, what does the “next step” look like?

For some, it may be moving from occasional giving to regular, intentional generosity. For others, it could mean increasing their giving as a response to God’s provision. Wherever you are on your giving journey, here are three ways to take your next step:

Reflect and Pray

Ask God to show you where he’s leading you in generosity. It may be uncomfortable, but growth often is. Trust that God will answer your prayer: “God, where do you want me to be in my giving.”

Take Inventory

Consider your resources. Are there areas where God has given you margin to give more freely?

Start Small but Stay Consistent

Generosity isn’t about the amount. It’s about the heart. Taking one small, faithful step forward can create a ripple effect that touches many lives.

We don’t give to earn anything. We give because we’ve already been given everything in Jesus Christ. As we take the next step in generosity together, we move closer to becoming the community we’re called to be…open-handed, grace-filled, and ready to bless others as we’ve been blessed.

Let’s keep growing together as we seek to take the next step along the Giving Path.

Fall is here my favorite season and the one that reminds me to be grateful, not just for cooler weather, pumpkin patches, and all the fun outdoor activities, but for all of God’s blessings. Fall is a great time to remember the practice of gratitude. Scientific studies have proven that practicing gratitude improves our physical, mental, and spiritual health. If you’ve never tried it before, you may think, “What do I do?” There is more to practicing gratitude than just making a list of our blessings.

The Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices That Transform Us, by Adele Calhoun, was one of my go-to resources in seminary. It explains:

The practice of gratitude includes:

• prayers and songs that focus on God’s generosity to us,

• gratefully giving and sharing all that we are and have as a sign of thankfulness to God,

• expressing gratitude to others,

• the habit of saying “thank you,” “I am so grateful,” “you are so kind,” and so forth,

• gratefully noticing God’s presence and gifts throughout the day,

• practicing an abundance mentality, counting the blessings of life,

• keeping a gratitude journal.

The God-given fruit of this practice is:

• keeping company with Jesus no matter what happens,

• being aware of the abundance of gifts and grace and God’s presence in your life,

• curbing critical tendencies by upstaging them with thanksgiving,

• seeing what you have as quickly as seeing what you don’t have,

• treasuring and valuing people by thanking them often and clearly,

• noticing your lack of gratitude and repenting of the idol that has your heart at that moment,

• receiving everything you have as a gift rather than as an entitlement.

If you would like to know more about practicing gratitude you can also order Henri Nouwen’s book Life Signs or just join us on Sunday mornings at Prism, and don’t forget to invite your FRANS (Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors, and Strangers.)

Churchwide

Each month we recognize a volunteer or volunteers who make an impact by selflessly sharing their time and talents for the betterment of our church and community.

Jennifer and Greg Predmore - Prism Volunteers

Jennifer and Greg Predmore lead our Hospitality Team at Prism, coordinating all the volunteers who serve on this team and ordering the snacks and coffee we keep stocked week after week. Their efforts are a big part of what makes Prism feel like such a welcoming place for so many.

But, Jennifer and Greg do so much more than just that.

Oftentimes, you will find them greeting people at the door or see Jennifer taking photos during our celebration for use on social media. Jennifer also helped us create the photo displays in the OLEC lobby. Both she and Greg are a part of our monthly Prism Team meetings that help guide our services, and they played a major role in representing Prism at this year’s Germantown Festival. They set up our booth and tent, greeted visitors, ran the prize wheel, shared information about our ministry, and invited people to join us on Sunday mornings. Because of their dedicated service, along with the efforts of other wonderful volunteers, the festival was a huge success in helping us connect with the community!

Jennifer and Greg continually go above and beyond what we ask of them to help Prism grow and thrive, and we, honestly, don’t know what we’d do without them. From the entire Prism family, we say thank you to Jennifer and Greg Predmore! Your dedication of time, talent, energy, and service has made a tremendous difference at Prism, and we are so grateful for you both!

Communion Servers Needed

One blessing of our growing 10:30 traditional service is the need for more Communion servers. More servers mean we can share Communion more efficiently, helping us stay focused on the holy moment, without the distractions that can come when the service runs long.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Our national holiday of Thanksgiving is nearly upon us. I’ve always been a fan of this time set aside for giving thanks. As a child, my family would trek to Wewoka, Oklahoma as aunts, uncles, and cousins would descend upon Aunt Billie’s house. We’d, somehow, fit over 30 people together. A rite of passage for boy cousins, who were old enough, was sleeping out in the R.V. It was quite an adventure! This trip typically involved my birthday celebration, and, as memory serves, this trip was where I fell in love with red velvet cake. Uncle Bill would take us out for some spelunking and fossil finding. We’d watch football and play golf, cards, and basketball. I give thanks for the memories associated with this time of year.

I pray that we, as a church, take advantage of the time set aside for thanksgiving. May we embrace the joy of what has been accomplished as people of faith, and may we look forward to where God is leading us. We have much to sing about and much to be thankful for.

Psalm 100 calls us to enter his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise. I pray you will all have a joyous time together, and that you’ll remember that the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Care Ministries Seminar Series: Strengthening Our Community Through Support and Education

This year, the Care Ministries Team hosted five impactful seminars designed to offer both information and support to our congregation. Topics included Coping with Life’s Challenges, Coping with the Death of a Loved One, Coping with Separation and/or Divorce, Hospice and Palliative Care, and, rounding out our 2025 lineup, Healthcare Law and Advance Care Planning

Each session provided a space for honest conversation, emotional connection, and practical guidance. We were blessed with outstanding guest facilitators who brought compassion, clarity, and expertise to every topic. Attendance was strong, reflecting how much these subjects resonate with our community.

At their heart, these seminars are about more than just learning they're about connection. Life brings challenges to us all, but when we come together to share, listen, and grow, we find strength. We were never meant to walk through life alone; we were created for community.

Looking ahead to 2026, we plan to revisit some of this year's most meaningful topics and introduce new ones as well. If there’s a subject you’d like to see covered, we’d love to hear from you.

Please reach out to Yolanda Toney at ytoney@germantownumc.org or 901-801-6368 with your suggestions.

Let’s continue to walk this journey together encouraging, educating, and caring for one another along the way.

Germantown United Women in Faith Tips for the Holidays

Did you know? Germantown United Women in Faith (GUWF) encourages women to read a diverse range of books for learning and pleasure. We offer books and resources in the GUWF Library, located in room 231, in the chapel wing of the church, which are available for self-checkout. You can find books on a wide variety of topics, including biographies, current events, devotionals, home and family, missions, the modern-day church, societal issues, and children’s titles. All women of GUMC are encouraged to come explore and learn with us.

With this in mind

Looking for a gift for that special someone for whom it’s hard to buy?

Have a friend or family member who loves and appreciates the value of reading?

Instead of buying a gift, would you prefer to honor someone in a meaningful way that blesses others?

GUWF has the answer for you! Why not make a donation to purchase a book for our library? The process is easy, and books purchased will have a name plate added to the inside cover, and an acknowledgement card with name of donor and book purchased is mailed to the honoree. Upon request, we are happy to provide the acknowledgment card directly to the donor for “a special delivery” (think Christmas stocking!).

Reminisce About Christmas in the 1940s at the December Brown Bag Lunch!

Whether you celebrated the holidays in the 1940s or just heard about traditions, music, movies, stories, or radio clips, thinking about Christmas in those times is still in our minds and brings back warm memories of what a traditional Christmas was like in the US. World War II heavily influenced every aspect of the season, with wartime Christmas being a time of scarcity and longing, and post-war holidays reflecting relief and a growing economy. We think of names like Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Gene Autry, and Nat King Cole when we recall music and movies. Some of the movies made during the 1940s are still favorites today. Timothy Taylor is going to tell us about all these things and more from a simpler, bygone time at the December Brown Bag Lunch Series, an adventure in learning sponsored by the Older Adult Council. Come prepared to think warm thoughts about the past and get ready for your Christmas season.

Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One; give thanks, because he s given Jesus Christ, his son….

And now let the weak say I am strong’, let the poor say I am rich’, because of what the Lord has done for us; Give thanks…”

This hymn, “Give Thanks,” is one of my favorite hymns. It was composed by Henry Smith Jr., in 1978, in response to a sermon given by the pastor at Williamsburg New Testament Church in Virginia.

It reminds me, this November, to always give thanks, even when life is most challenging. This month, we celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s always been a month when I take the time to focus on being thankful. In our home library, we have shelves of devotional/inspirational books. One book I pick up every year around this time is by Ann Voskamp, “One Thousand Gifts.” In her introduction, she writes, “It all began quite spontaneously, unintentionally. One of those things God grows up in the most unexpected places a friend dared me to start counting one thousand things I loved, 1,000 graces.”

Gratitude

Every day, Ann Voskamp would record at least one thing she was thankful for, one thing she was aware of with which God had blessed her life. Her thankfulness included how the sun light would mingle with the shadows of the tree leaves, how her child would call out to her, how her first cup of coffee tasted in the morning, how a friend reached out to her when she was going through a health crisis, and thousands of additional experiences.

Over the years, she listed over 4,000 gifts. Her friend’s dare opened her awareness of how Jesus lived each day, giving thanks to Father God, regardless of His circumstances. What Voskamp found was, that in giving thanks for each moment and savoring it as bread from God’s hand, she found the sustenance and the grace of God in it. Giving thanks transformed her life. She wrote, “God began to show me the graces, the love gifts, that were right before me, waiting to be noticed, waiting to be received…even when I am sometimes impatient or unwilling, when I face conflict and heartache, I’ve begun to accept that even the impossible is a possible opportunity to thank God, to experience the goodness and grace of the Creator of life!”

Beloved, I invite you to join me in giving thanks with a grateful heart this November. As we give thanks to God, we receive God’s blessings, and then we can become a blessing to others. And, in giving thanks, may our eyes and hearts be open to our loving God who is with us always, even in the challenges that life often brings our way.If you ever would like to discuss this, or any other life event/challenge, please know you can call on me.

God Bless you Always, Linda

Preventing Injuries at Home

Each year, many older people are injured in and around their homes. Many injuries happen from things that are easy to overlook but also easy to fix. Here are some simple ways to make your home safer and prevent injuries.

CORDS RUGS, RUNNERS, AND MATS

If you must use an extension cord, place it on the floor against a wall, where no one can trip over it. Replace damaged or frayed cords. Check wires for damage.

Tripping over rugs and runners is a common injury cause. Remove rugs and runners that tend to slide. Apply double-faced adhesive tape or rubber matting to the backs of rugs and runners, or purchase rugs with slip-resistant backing.

STAIRS

Worn treads or loose carpeting on steps can lead to slips and falls.

• Avoid wearing only socks or smooth-soled shoes or slippers when using stairs.

• Ensure the carpet is firmly attached to the steps all along the stairs.

• Consider refinishing or replacing worn carpeting.

• Remove all objects from the stairwell.

HANDRAILS

• The handrail should always be used when climbing up or down the stairs.

• Be sure a handgrip is available for even one step.

• Repair broken handrails and tighten fixtures that hold handrails to the wall.

• Always use extreme caution on the first and last steps.

• Stairs should be well lit so that each step can be seen. If there are no lights, keep a flashlight at the top and bottom of the stairs.

PASSAGEWAYS

Rearrange furniture to open passageways and walkways. Remove furniture, boxes, and other items that can cause tripping in an emergency.

TELEPHONE AREA

Keep the phone numbers for the police, fire, poison control center, and a close neighbor clearly posted in case of emergency. Keep the same numbers in your cell phone under the listing EMERGENCY.

GUMC member Harry Baird turned 100 on September 25!

Debby Bland, Conrad Schanson, Todd Wilson, Linda Gabriel, and Richard Mattox visited Harry at The Village with balloons, a birthday cookie, and plenty of cheer as they sang “Happy Birthday” to mark the special occasion.

Room in the Inn needs your prayers, your volunteer service, and your donations.

GUMC hosts Room in the Inn a mission to provide safe, overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers provide a meal and friendly hospitality to our guests who may be women with children, single women, or men. RITI is the only free shelter for men. Only 10% of beds in area shelters are available to women, who make up about 40% of the homeless population.

Each night, volunteers pick up 14 pre-screened guests and bring them to The Cottage, located on the GUMC campus. Volunteers provide dinner and share the meal with our guests. After dinner, guests can watch TV, read, or socialize. Showers and laundry are available for all the guests. Guests spend the night in a safe, warm environment. In the morning, they are given breakfast and a takeaway snack and are driven back to the pick-up location.

Eight volunteers can provide one night of “holy hospitality.” Volunteers bring in dinner and breakfast food, make the beds for the guests, and serve and eat the meals with guests. After the guests have departed in the morning, The Cottage is cleaned, and “laundry angels” take the bed linens to wash.

GUMC hosts RITI every Friday night during the winter. Other churches use The Cottage to host RITI on other nights of the week. Some Friday nights are hosted by groups (Sunday school classes, women’s circles, men’s groups, or youth.) Even if your group doesn’t host specific nights, you can volunteer on any night you are free. Some GUMC members get their children or grandchildren involved in hosting, so they learn first-hand about serving others.

Contact Roger Woelke, (901) 277-5094, or Leigh Adams, (615) 430-6088, to find a time you can help.

Germantown United Methodist Preschool

This fall has been a busy season at GUMP! Our unit, “The Great Outdoors,” inspired students to discover the beauty of change that comes with new environments. From colorful leaves and crisp autumn air to pumpkin spice everywhere, our classrooms have been filled with curiosity and discovery.

We had a visit from Germantown’s finest the Germantown Fire Department! Seeing the firetruck up close was so exciting for our preschoolers. They loved exploring the fire truck and learning about all the gear firefighters use. It was a great way to teach children about safety and the important role firefighters play in our community.

GUMP welcomed families to join us for “Treats with Someone Sweet.” Our little friends loved showing off their classrooms and having donuts with their parents. We are so thankful for the continued support of our GUMP families!

Our friends also enjoyed using their imaginations as they dressed up in costumes for our fall harvest class parties! We played games, went on scavenger hunts, and listened to stories and songs of the season.

GUMP is thankful for our community helpers, our GUMP families, and our wonderful teachers and staff who make everything meaningful and magical.

Making the Best of a Rainy Fall Fest!

Our annual Fall Fest on Sunday, October 26, looked a little different this year, thanks to some very uncooperative rain clouds! While we had to cancel our outdoor activities, that didn’t stop us from having a fantastic time together indoors.

Kids (and some fun-loving adults!) came to church dressed in their favorite costumes, adding plenty of smiles to the day. The children had a blast “trick-or-treating” through the adult Sunday school classes. Thank you to all the grown-ups who handed out candy, decorated your areas, and joined in the fun!

After worship, the Huddle was filled with excitement as kids painted pumpkins and played carnival games. A big thankyou to everyone who helped make this year’s Fall Fest such a fun and happy day rain and all!

Bible Presentation Sunday

Bible Presentation Sunday, a time-honored GUMC tradition, took place Sunday, Sept 28, during Prism and traditional worship service. This year, we not only presented Bibles to third graders, but also included fourth through sixth graders who hadn’t received one in the past. 23 students received personalized, embossed Bibles during the presentations. Two days prior, these same students attended a Friday night Bible retreat at the church. They enjoyed dinner and snacks, energy-burning Bible-centric games, and a special worship service.

Worship Reminder

We hope that you will bring your elementary students (and younger children, too, if you wish) to worship with you each week. Remember that children are always welcome at our services! For our traditional service, we have children’s bulletins and worship bags in the cabinet on the east side of the narthex. For Prism, we have worship bags on the back table in the OLEC gym. Please return your worship bag to the bin after the service. The Hamilton Nursery is open from 8:45–11:30 am for children who have not yet entered kindergarten.

Acolytes Needed for Traditional Worship Service

Every Sunday, we need two acolytes for traditional worship service. What a great way to begin serving the church at an early age!

Children must be in second grade or older to participate. There is no age limit! Click here to sign up, or scan this QR code. If your child is interested in acolyting and hasn't been trained, reach out to Becca Keel to schedule a mutually convenient training session.

Families with young children (and older people who are children at heart) are invited to attend this special GUMC tradition. Children will walk the path of Jesus’ birth. They will begin with the angels, move to Bethlehem for Jesus’ birth, visit the shepherds, and finish with the wise men. After learning the reason we share gifts at Christmas, children will have a chance to share their wish list with the Jolly Ol’ Guy himself.

Registration for this free event by clicking here or scanning the QR code.

Children’s Christmas Market

Saturday, December 13, from 9-11:30 am and

Sunday, December 14, from 8:45-11:00 am

In the Huddle (Room 240)

At our Children's Christmas Market, preschooland elementary-aged children will have an opportunity to shop for gifts for family and friends. Each gift is exactly $5, of beautiful quality, wrapped, and tagged. Children will also learn about free-trade, mission-oriented gifts, and being a purposeful giver. On Sunday, Dec 14, elementary children will shop during Sunday school hour. Preschool-age children may shop between worship hours or after church ends. Bring $5 for each gift you intend to purchase. No registration necessary.

Youth

We are so excited for our upcoming November GUMC Youth events! We’ll be starting off the month with our annual Crave Retreat, a perfect time to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of our regular lives and worship God as a community. We’ll also be having our Element Friendsgiving Celebration on November 23, for which we ask each of our students to bring food for a potluck style dinner. In the past, we’ve had delicious dishes, such as homemade mashed potatoes, Pizza Hut pizza, and multiple mac and cheese family recipes. We spend time eating good food, fellowshipping, and having a relaxing night of fun. There is so much November fun in store for our GUMC youth community!

Last month, we had an absolute blast at our annual Turkey Bowl (Halloween Edition!) Look for those pictures in our next edition of the Tidings!
