Advent Worship Series

As the days grow shorter, and we approach lighting the first Advent candle, I’m excited to invite you to this year’s Advent Worship Series: "Guess Who's Coming?"

This four-week exploration, aligned with the Revised Common Lectionary Year A readings for 2025, will focus on the mystery of Christ's “comings.” We prepare our hearts by looking back at the nativity, by looking forward to the second coming, and by looking inward to his coming in the Spirit.

Week 1, November 30: “An Unexpected Guest”

As we light the first candle, the Candle of Hope (or Prophet’s Candle), drawing from Matthew 24:36-44 and Isaiah 2:1-5, we'll explore the call to stay awake and be ready for Christ's sudden return, like a thief in the night urging us to live in the light, as we await the ultimate surprise.

Week 2, December 7: “An Unlikely Way”

As we light the second candle the Candle of Peace, also known as the Bethlehem Candle we turn our hearts to Matthew 3:1-12 (together with Isaiah 11:1-10). In the wilderness, a voice cries out, rough and unrelenting a prophet in camel’s hair, speaking of brood of vipers, unquenchable fire, and yet…an unlikely way forward. We hear of children led to safety, serpents confronted, and lambs lying down beside wolves. Here, in the raw honesty of repentance, God carves a path where true peace breaks through the impossible.

Week 3, December 14: “An Unrecognized Messiah”

As we light the third candle the Candle of Joy or Shepherds' Candle (often rose-colored) reflecting on Matthew 11:2-11 with Isaiah 35:1-10, we'll see Jesus challenge the doubting John, revealing His presence through healing, joy, and good news to the marginalized. We will also hear Mary’s triumphant Magnificat in Luke 1:46b-55, praising God for the Messiah to whom she has not yet given birth.

Week 4: December 21: “An Unheralded Savior”

Lighting the fourth candle, the Candle of Love (or Angels' Candle), hearing from Matthew 1:18-25 (with Isaiah 7:10-16), we'll delve into Joseph's dream and the virgin birth God's ultimate surprise, Emmanuel arriving quietly to save His people from their sins.

Our Advent journey begins in anticipation and culminates in the full light of Christmas, with Christmas Eve services.

• Family Service (with Communion) at 3 pm

• Prism (with Communion and candles) at 5 pm

• Lessons and Carols (with Communion and candles) at 8 pm

Bring a friend or neighbor. There's always room for more at the table Jesus sets. We look forward to this sacred season together!

A Legacy of Faith: Giving that lasts beyond a Lifetime

As people of faith, we are called to be good stewards of the blessings God has entrusted to us our time, our talents, and our treasures. Throughout our lives, we support the church’s mission through our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. But, did you know that your support for the church can continue even after your lifetime? Including your church in your estate planning is a meaningful way to ensure that your faith and values live on for generations to come.

Planned giving, through a will, trust, or beneficiary designation, is not just for the wealthy or elderly. It’s an act of gratitude and foresight that allows anyone to make a lasting impact. Whether your gift is large or modest, it can help sustain vital ministries such as worship, outreach, youth programs, and missions for years into the future.

There are many simple ways to include the church in your plans. Some individuals leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of their estate in their will. Others name the church as a beneficiary of a retirement account, life insurance policy, or investment fund. Each of these options can provide future support while also offering potential tax benefits for your heirs.

Most importantly, a planned gift is a statement of faith. It reflects your commitment to the Gospel and your desire to help the church continue its work of sharing God’s love in the community and the world. It’s a way of saying, “I believe in this mission, and I want it to endure.”

If you are considering such a gift, we encourage you to speak with your family, your financial advisor, and the church office. We would be honored to discuss how your legacy can make a lasting difference in the life of our congregation.

Together, through thoughtful stewardship, we can build a foundation of faith that continues to bless others long after we are gone.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:21

Sundays | 10:30 am

Owings Life Enrichment Center

The Christmas season can be a time of really high expectations and really big disappointments. It can be a time of joy and celebration for some people and a time of loneliness and depression for others. We are keeping all of this in mind as we journey together through the holidays. Each Sunday, at Prism, we come just as we are gathering at 10:30 am, in the OLEC, to celebrate Jesus together with songs and messages of joy and peace. We aren’t facing the holidays alone, and you don’t have to either.

Prism is celebrating Advent with a series called “Down to Earth,” inspired by the book of the same title, written by Michael Slaughter and Rachel Billups. We begin our Advent season right after Thanksgiving, talking about “Down-to-Earth Love,” and we will continue in the weeks to come with the themes of “Down-toEarth Humility,” Down-to-Earth Lifestyle,” and “Down-to-Earth Obedience.”

On Christmas Eve, we will meet in the OLEC, at 5:00 pm, for a special Christmas Eve Celebration, including Communion, candle lighting, and special music from Prism Riot.

We look forward to celebrating the season together and encourage you to invite all your FRANS (Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors, and Strangers.)

Personally invite anyone you know who may not have a place or people with whom to celebrate this special season. Christmas can be a lonely time of year for folks, and that is why we exist Prism is a Place For All People!

Merry Christmas!

Generosity

Ways to Give

It’s not too late to submit your 2026 Estimate of Giving card. Does it help the church in planning? Yes. More importantly, it serves as a tool for us to prayerfully seekwhere God wants us to be in our giving and to provide a tangible way to faithfully live along the giving path. Giving is certainly an act of faith, and we are called to be generous in our support of God’s work through our church.

Dinah Allison - Merry Mission Market Coordinator

How do you teach children at Christmastime that it is just as joyful to give as it is to receive? For Dinah Allison, the visionary behind the Children’s Merry Mission Market (formerly known as the Children’s Alternative Christmas), the answer has been a heartfelt tradition, now 15 years strong. What began in 2010 as a small fundraiser for her daughter’s Kenya mission trip has grown into a cherished ministry that helps children experience the true joy of generosity.

Throughout the year, Dinah searches for handmade crafts from artisans in countries such as India, Kenya, and Haiti each purchase supporting local missions and fair-trade initiatives. She especially loves items created from recycled materials, like bike chains or old tires, that reflect both creativity and stewardship.

As Christmas approaches, an army of volunteers helps Dinah transform The Huddle into a festive mission marketplace. Here, cheerful helper elves guide children as they thoughtfully choose gifts for family and friends. Every item comes beautifully wrapped and includes a card sharing the story behind the gift, which connects giver and receiver to the lives it impacts around the world. For just $5 per gift, children experience the excitement of selecting and giving something meaningful. Last year, alone, nearly 450 gifts were sold, raising $2,200 for global missions.

“I hope that, through the stories of each vendor, children learn to appreciate how blessed they are,” Dinah says. “Five dollars might not seem like much here, but that same five dollars can make a huge difference across the globe.”

Christmastime at GUMC is a truly magical time, and for the Children’s Ministry, the Merry Mission Market plays a huge role in making it so. Thank you, Dinah, for all the time, energy, and love that you invest in our church and in our children! We love you!

If you are interested in helping Dinah Allison, whether by wrapping gifts or helping the children shop, please contact her at dallisonme@aol.com

GUMC’s Flower Ministry needs your help!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Our Flower Ministry is looking for volunteers for 2026. Each Sunday, volunteers take the flowers from the altar and arrange them into six smaller vases. Each Monday, two volunteers deliver the flowers (three each) to members of GUMC. You can choose how often you want to volunteer once a month or every week.

On Wednesday, November 19, GUMC members and friends gathered in the OLEC gym for a delicious buffet of turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings, plus scrumptious desserts for all. The tables were beautifully decorated by our United Women in Faith members. It was special celebrating this season of thankfulness together as a church family. A big THANK YOU to all who made it happen.

Advent Workshop

After the delicious dinner, families gathered in the fellowship hall for the Advent Workshop. Children enjoyed creating Christmas ornaments and crafting family Advent wreaths to be used at home during the Advent season. What a great way to kick off this season of joy and expectation!

Servant Hospitality

Jesus came to show us what true greatness really looks like and what true greatness does. Jesus’ ministry on earth was a ministry of humble service. There was nothing pretentious about him. He didn’t expect special treatment. What we learn from Jesus, by his example, is the importance of putting the needs of others ahead of our own.

Our life is not about the pursuit of comfort or recognition. We are never more like Jesus than when we are serving others.

In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interests of others.

Father, in our desire to be more hospitable, create in us a heart that strives to serve others in Jesus’ name. In this sacred season, may we discover that true greatness is not in fame or position, but in humble service. Amen.

Sunday, December 7 9:30 am - 12 pm (Fellowship Hall) 10 am - 12 pm (OLEC - Prism)

Circle the date, tap it into your phone, stick it on your fridge. However you keep track of what matters, make sure Sunday, December 7, sits boldly on your calendar. That morning, GUMC will turn into a lively crossroads where need, compassion, generosity, and hope meet.

Who will you meet?

This season don t just wrap gifts. Help wrap someone in care, dignity, and hope.

• Representatives from many of the missions and service organizations that GUMC supports. These are the people who show up for the hungry, the unhoused, the sick, the isolated, the abandoned, and all who yearn to feel God’s care in both nearby neighborhoods and far-reaching communities.

• Your GUMC community, visitors, and the friends you bring to share in a morning of learning, loving and giving.

What awaits you?

• Conversations that reveal real needs and real solutions. You will see exactly how your donations and volunteer hours open doors and change lives for people served by each organization.

• Opportunities to choose Christmas gifts that offer lasting impact.

• A welcoming space to donate to organizations whose work speaks to your heart.

What kinds of gifts can you give?

• “Impact gifts” drawn from each organization’s list of immediate needs, such as medical care, warm clothing, food, clean water, education, tools, seeds, livestock, shelter materials, counseling, hands-on help (painting, building, sorting), hours spent packaging food, or reading with a child. Select a need, give funds or pledge time, and let your recipient know their gift brings hope to someone else.

• General donations of volunteer hours or financial support for needs you feel called to help address.

• Handmade items whose proceeds support the ministries represented.

• Cards that help you share the story of the donation or volunteer commitment made in someone’s honor. Continued...

...Continued

When and how can I participate?

• Join us on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 9:30 am to noon in the fellowship hall, or from 10 am to noon at the back of the PRISM service in the OLEC. All participating organizations will have representatives in the fellowship hall. Several organizations will also have representatives at the back of the PRISM service, making it easy for everyone to take part.

• From December 6 through 31, visit the GUMC website to explore the list of participating organizations, browse each organization’s catalog to see how monetary gifts and volunteer hours create tangible change in the lives of the people they serve, and give money/pledge time online.

If you’re searching for gifts that genuinely change lives, trying to delight the hard-to-shop-for loved one, seeking a way to support work that transforms lives, or considering new ways to volunteer in the year ahead...

When asked what about GUMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied: “We observed this is a friendly congregation whose beliefs aligned with ours. The Music Ministry is uplifting, and everyone seems to joyfully participate. Joel and Sue Myers’ visit made us feel like this was the church we were looking for.”

“So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 2:8

I’ll admit it. I watch a lot of Hallmark Christmas movies usually with a cup of tea, maybe a little hot chocolate, and, yes, sometimes even a cookie (or two). Those movies always make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. But when the credits roll and real life seeps back in, I’m reminded that life is not a Hallmark Christmas movie. The real essence of Christmas hope isn’t what’s shown on the screen.

In real life, everything doesn’t always turn out perfectly. Not everyone gets what they want, and there aren’t always perfectly timed miracles like when the town rallies to save the family Christmas tree farm just before foreclosure.

The true hope of Christmas isn’t dependent on our circumstances. It doesn’t require us to look like Hallmark actors or have Balsam Hill trees or the perfect spruce or fir.

Real hope is not found in the world. Our hope is found in Jesus. Our hope has a name Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us.

Lynn Campbell

Germantown UMC welcomed Lynn Campbell into membership on Sunday, November 23, at the traditional worship service. Lynn joined by Restored by Affirmation of Faith. Her Welcome Friends are Ron and Linda Wiggins. Lynn has joined the Asbury Sunday School Class.

When asked what about GUMC made her want to become a part of our church community, she replied: “GUMC struck me from the moment I approached its doors on my first Sunday here. I found everyone to be so welcoming and friendly, not just to me, but to each other, as well. I have enjoyed the sermons and find them to be thought-provoking, so they stay with me long after service is done. The selection of hymns each week is both enjoyable and a reminder of how great God is and how happy I am to have him in my life.”

Elder Care Ministry

We are now in the Season of Advent.

Over the years, Advent has become a season of reflection for me a season of thinking about life, the blessings, and the sorrows I’ve experienced throughout the year with my family, my friends, our community, and our world.

Advent is a holy season, set apart from the rest of the year, in which joy is experienced at the very same time that some people experience grief. It’s also an incredible season of healing, new beginnings, and hope.

A Season of HOPE

What is hope? According to Webster’s Dictionary, hope is defined as trust or as a desire with anticipation, a wanting for something to happen or to be true, an expectation of something beneficial in the future. Jesus is the focus of our hope, because it is in anticipation of his birth, this Advent, that we hope for new life, a new way of living, and a new connection with God. Hope is born where hope is needed most.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

In this season, when the daylight is shorter, and we’re faced with more darkness, our hope is in the Light. If you’re going through challenging times of illness or grief, or you’re experiencing depression or loneliness, you can trust the hope of new birth with Jesus. With the Spirit of God, you are not alone, you are promised light and a new creation.

God came. God sees. God knows. And, because God is with us, there is always hope. There is brokenness and failure, hurt and heartache, diagnoses and grief times when it feels hard to even breathe but, there is always hope.

Christmas is coming for you right now, whatever you might be experiencing. Christmas is coming for your grief. Christmas is coming for the sadness you can’t speak out loud. Jesus is the hope-holder and is coming for all of us.

Let us focus on hope, this Advent season, so we can celebrate Christmas as a new beginning. A new day begins with sunrise. The days lengthen. And, a new era in human history began when God’s light came shining into our world through Jesus. If you would like a visit to discuss life, challenges, celebrations, hope, or anything, please know that I’m available for you.

Blessings of Hope this Advent Season, Linda

Did you know that change in your living situation is difficult? Of course you know!

Many older adults are faced with the realization that managing their beloved house and home has become a burden, or, at the least, is very difficult, and they just don’t want to do it anymore. But the thought of downsizing and moving to either a smaller dwelling or to a retirement community causes panic.

Changing your living situation involves emotional and logistical planning. This includes downsizing, calling on others for support, and preparing for the emotional impact of change. Experts who work with others going through this change recommend the following:

• Begin planning at least 3-6 months in advance to reduce stress.

• Begin downsizing gradually. If you have children, talk with them about what they might like to have right now. Plan to keep items that either have a practical use or bring you happiness. Donate or sell the rest.

• If downsizing seems too big for you to manage, identify the items you want to bring with you to your new home and hire an estate sales person to hold a sale for your items once you’ve moved. Their payment is usually a percentage of what is sold. Donate the rest.

• Talk with a real estate representative, if you want to downsize to a house or condo. Or, visit the many retirement homes to see for yourself what you like, where you’d feel comfortable, and identify what you can afford. Be patient with yourself as you make a plan and as you execute your plan. Recognize that adjusting to a new environment and people takes time. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first.

If you are experiencing a change in your health, begin to make a plan. Change is so much easier to deal with when you have a plan and can take the time to address the change. Always remember, you are not alone. Call on us in Elder Care Ministries to support you, discuss your options, or help you find someone who can address your concerns.

At GUMC, our mission statement is: We are a welcoming community of faith, committed to loving God and loving others, serving Christ and sharing him, transforming lives and making disciples.

We love our church community at Germantown United Methodist Church. We have found a home here with each other, living out our faith together. Part of living is being aware that someday we all will die. Have you thought about where you would like your loved ones to place your earthly body? In 2010, Germantown UMC dedicated the McVay Gardens Columbarium. It was felt that a church-sponsored columbarium would provide a wonderful, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective way for family and loved ones to extend a long-standing relationship with our church on into perpetuity. It is located in our McVay Gardens property, adjacent to the original Germantown Cemetery. If you are interested in finding out more about the columbarium, or wish to make arrangements for your inurnment, please contact Don Rhoads (dlrhoads2@gmail.com). He will answer any questions, offer a walking tour of the columbarium, and help in any way he can.

Holiday Depression: Strategies for Overcoming Seasonal Stress

Sometimes, as we age, the holidays no longer seem very jolly, and we don’t feel like celebrating much anymore. What used to be a joyous occasion can change and take on new meanings as life throws us curve balls. We think we are supposed to be excited and happy this time of year, but that expectation alone can cause people of all ages to become sad or depressed. Family caregivers and older adults are especially susceptible to the holiday blues.

A common cause of depression during the holidays is due to grieving a loved one’s passing. One of the biggest challenges for families is losing a loved one. Whether you are facing an imminent loss, mourning a recent passing, or missing a loved one who died long ago, this time of year often highlights absences and can bring intense feelings of grief. Receiving a holiday card addressed to your late loved one from a well-meaning friend may cause your grief to resurface.

This type of feeling is all very normal, but to help you get through these tough times, talk about how you would like to handle the situation with someone you trust. If you want to do something to honor your loved one, there are different ways you can pay tribute. Consider some of these ideas.

• Place a picture of your loved one in a place of prominence at home.

• Light a memorial candle.

• Make a photo album of previous holidays.

• Set aside a time so that everyone who wants to can share a favorite memory about your loved one.

• Toast your loved one.

• Visit your loved one’s final resting place or a location where they enjoyed spending time.

Remember that not everyone grieves in the same way. There is no accepted norm. You may cry at the drop of a hat, while someone else is more stoic. Take each day as it comes, give yourself grace, and remember you are not alone in your grief or your memories.

Germantown United Methodist Preschool

Merry Christmas from Germantown United Methodist Preschool!

We’ve had a joyful and busy season of learning, playing, and celebrating, as we prepare our hearts for Christmas. This month, our preschoolers will experience a special chapel called the Journey to Bethlehem, where they follow the path of Jesus’ birth and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

One of the highlights, every year, is the magical visit from Santa Claus! He will stop by each classroom to read The Night Before Christmas and take a photo with every child what a treat!

Our 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old classes will also share the joy of the season by performing Christmas songs in a special program for their families. Each class will celebrate the birth of Jesus with a “Happy Birthday, Jesus” party, reminding us of the true reason for the season.

Enrollment for the 2026–2027 school year at GUMP is just around the corner! We’re already welcoming prospective families for parent/child meet and greets. Enrollment officially begins in January, with priority given to current families and church members. If you're interested in joining our wonderful play-based preschool, give us a call at 901-753-3109.

Please note: GUMP will be closed for Christmas break from December 13 through January 5. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on January 6!

Christmas is not complete without hot cocoa!

Youth

The past few months have been busy ones for GUMC youth! We had our annual dodgeball tournament, affectionately referred to as Turkey Bowl. This year’s Turkey Bowl had 55 people in attendance, with the team “Best Dressed” taking home the trophy. Our first ever Turkey Bowl costume contest was a big hit as well!

In early November, GUMC Youth had an absolute blast at Victory Ranch for our Crave retreat! We had a big crowd, with 61 kids, college students who drove hours to be with us, and our dedicated adult volunteers, who were willing to sacrifice sleep for our students. We also had fun this year with our friends from Woodland Presbyterian Youth! After loading up the three buses and driving to Victory Ranch, we started out the weekend with some great food and worship, an indicator of the fantastic weekend to come. Saturday, after breakfast, worship, and devotional, the youth split into their four teams and enjoyed activities such as team building, giant swing, high ropes course, and laser tag, with a break in the middle of the day for lunch. In the late afternoon, we enjoyed some free time before dinner and our Saturday night worship. Connecting with God and our community away from our phones was really a wonderful opportunity, and we left on Sunday morning feeling closer to God and each other!

We’re looking forward to our Element gift exchange this month, as well as helping support other church events, such as Journey to Bethlehem, Room in the Inn, and the Advent Processional. It has truly been a busy season, and we are thankful to our church community for supporting us in our programming and giving us the opportunity to give back during this holiday season.

ChristmasEveService forFamilieswithYoungChildren

December 24 at 3:00 pm | Sanctuary

We look forward to having you worship with us on Christmas Eve. This service, a beloved holiday tradition at GUMC, is designed for families with children in mind. We will sing traditional Christmas hymns and tell the Christmas story with a live nativity scene and active participation by the children in attendance. Communion will be served following a short children’s message.

Be an Angel to a Child in Need

Please be sure to check out our Angel Tree in the narthex. This annual holiday gift drive supports the children and families at Foster Village of Memphis. Children deserve a village beyond the system. Our tree is decorated with the needs and wishes of these young foster children. Simply choose an angel from the tree, buy the gift, and return the labeled, unwrapped gift to the Huddle (room 240) by Sunday, December 7.

Don’t miss this opportunity to make Christmas special for a child in need!

Acolytes Needed for Traditional Worship Service

Every Sunday, we need two acolytes for traditional worship service. What a great way to begin serving the church at an early age!

Children must be in second grade or older to participate. There is no age limit! Click here to sign up, or scan this QR code. If your child is interested in acolyting and hasn't been trained, reach out to Becca Keel to schedule a mutually convenient training session.
