Thanksgiving of Grace

NOVEMBER 2024

I recently read an article about Martin Rinkart. He was born in 1586 in Eilenberg, Saxony, what is now Germany. Martin was the son of a poor coppersmith. Wanting to serve the people in his village, he became a Lutheran pastor.

The Thirty Year’s War struck Germany and caused unimaginable destruction, death, and famine across Europe. All the countries in Europe were at war with one another. The people, cities, and villages in Germany suffered the most. Many had their homes and property burned. Enemy soldiers treated them cruelly. Survivors left everything behind, hoping to find friendly people and some protection in the next town.

Eilenberg was not destroyed, but, because people came for protection, too many people crowded within the town’s walls. A plague quickly spread through the overcrowded city. Almost 5,000 people died that year in the small city. Soon, Martin Rinkart was the only pastor left alive to perform funerals. Sometimes he had to perform funerals for up to 40 or 50 people in one day. His own wife died, yet he kept giving his energy to aid the people of Eilenberg.

During plague and hunger, the people could not leave the city. The enemy army of Sweden surrounded Eilenberg and would not leave unless the citizens of Eilenberg paid a huge sum of money. Martin Rinkart left the safety of the walls to negotiate with the enemy army, and he did so with grace, courage, and faith. He persuaded the Swedish army to accept a sum of money that the city could pay, and soon the siege was lifted.

Despite all the horrible things that had happened that year, Martin Rinkart composed a hymn of thanksgiving for the deliverance of Eilenberg. In German, the title is “Nun danket alle Gott.” We know it as, “Now Thank We All Our God.”

And each Thanksgiving, we sing:

“Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices. Who wondrous things had done, in whom His world rejoices. Who, from our mother's arms hath led us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.”

Martin Rinkart understood that Thanksgiving comes not in trying to impress God with our own work. Nor is thanksgiving only appropriate in times of plenty. Most importantly, thanksgiving remembers what God always does and his presence in our struggles. True thanksgiving is dedicating one’s life as a holy and living sacrifice. Whatever thanksgiving you offer the Lord, give of yourself in thanks for God’s heavenly grace. In all times.

These words by Henry Smith (TFWS 2036) are really appropriate for us as we enter the month of Thanksgiving, following our Generosity worship series. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7: “The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

From where does that “cheerful” come? It comes from our gratitude for all God’s blessings. It comes from the thanksgiving we have for the graciousness of our Lord. Out of that thanksgiving, we give back generously for the work of God through his church in our case, Germantown UMC.

This month we approach our Estimate of Giving Sunday (November 10) and consider the amount of our financial gifts for the work of ministry in 2025. Preparing our estimates and seeking to grow deeper along the giving path, I invite us to look through the lens of our thankfulness not in what we think we don’t have, not in concern that our denomination looks a little different, and not in anything other than our thankfulness to God. For He has blessed us in order to be a blessing. Let us be cheerful in our giving!

There is much for us to cheer in GUMC. We have a solid older adult ministry, vibrant programming for children and youth, an outstanding recreation center, excellent music, loving congregational care, and we strongly support mission after mission. God is doing remarkable things through our church, and it is only through our cheerful and generous giving that the resources are available for us to live into what God is continuing to do through our church.

I encourage you to join me in completing an estimate of giving card on November 10, or send it in electronically, prayerfully embracing an opportunity to be generous as God has been generous.

This November, we are doing something completely new! For the first time ever at Prism, we will be diving deeply into the Old Testament with a fourweek series entitled: “The Bible Jesus Read.” Of course, we have covered many scriptures from the Old Testament before especially important ones from Genesis, Psalms, and Proverbs. But, this month, we are taking a closer look at books such as Job, Deuteronomy, and Ecclesiastes. This series is inspired by the book The Bible Jesus Read: Why the Old Testament Matters, by Phillip Yancey.

Did you ever stop to think about the Bible that Jesus read? The only scriptures that people had during Jesus’ lifetime were the Torah and the writings of the prophets. The New Testament was not written until decades after Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Torah is made up of the first five books of our Old Testament. We can gain a much clearer perspective on what the New Testament tells us, and learn a lot that we can apply to our lives today, by going back to the Old Testament to seek out its wisdom. Often, people tend to focus on the New Testament because of the powerful, faith-building scriptures and accounts, but we benefit greatly when we go back to glean the wisdom from those who walked with God before the New Testament writers were ever born.

We hope you will join us this month as we take a deep dive into “The Bible Jesus Read” and don’t forget to invite your FRANS (Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors, Strangers) to join us at Prism on Sunday mornings at 11 am in the OLEC!

Rev. Mimi White

November 14 10:30 am or 6 pm

Germantown United Methodist Church The Hamilton Wing Room 342

You may have seen “Coping with Life’s Challenges” in your church bulletin, Sunday school class, or small group. No one is exempt from change, so we all adjust to a new normal at some point in our lives. Those facing challenges may be caregivers (especially those who are full-time), recent retirees, those who are separated or divorced, people with chronic or critical illnesses, or those who have experienced the death of their spouse, parent, friend, or child.

You may be the family member or friend who wants to offer support, but you are unsure of what to say, when to listen, or when to pray. This gathering is for you, too.

Come join us. You will have an opportunity to share, if you desire. No one will be called upon to speak. You are more than welcome to listen and to discover some essential coping skills. Christian Lay Minister (CLM) Yolanda Toney will facilitate, utilizing strategies based on the writings of H. Norman Wright, including his book, Recovering from the Losses of Life. H. Norman Wright was a grief and trauma specialist and a private Christian counselor for over thirty years.

These are free gatherings. Register online or call CLM Yolanda Toney, Director of Care Ministries at 901-801-6368.

Sunday, December 8 9 am - 12:15 pm Fellowship Hall

Mark your calendars now! GUMC’s annual Merry Mission Market (previously the Churchwide Alternative Christmas Market) is coming again this year, on the morning of Sunday, December 8.

Who will be present at the Merry Missions Market?

• Representatives from many of the missions and service organizations supported by GUMC, including organizations that serve the homeless, the hungry, the sick, the hurting, the abandoned, and those who need to feel God’s love both locally and around the world.

• Your GUMC friends (members and visitors) and all of the neighbors and friends you bring to share the morning with you!

What can you do at the Merry Mission Market?

• Learn about the organizations the ministries they offer, the people they serve, how your donations of various amounts can help them help the people they serve, and the opportunities for you to volunteer your time and talents to make a difference in the lives of those they support.

• Buy honorary or physical gifts for those on your Christmas list.

• Make donations to any or all of the organizations.

What kind of gifts can you buy at the market?

• You can make general donations to an organization in someone’s honor.

• Each organization will provide a list of needed items such as medical care or supplies, clothing, food, clean water, schooling/training, shelter, pigs, goats, sewing machines, seeds, tools, and counseling and the associated cost of each. You can choose an item that you think your gift recipient would appreciate, donate the cost of that item to the organization in need, and let the recipient know that, in their honor, you have given that item to the organization.

• From some groups, you can purchase items made by people they serve that you can wrap up and give to friends and family.

• Gift cards, that you can give to let people know of the donations that have been made in their honor, will be available.

• Regardless of what you choose, each gift you purchase enables an organization to help those they serve.

If you are wanting to give gifts that make a difference in the lives of others this year, looking for the perfect gift for a hard-to-buy-for person, looking for a worthwhile organization to make a donation to, or looking for a place to donate your time during the upcoming year, Merry Mission Market is the place for you!

Please join us in Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall on Sunday, December 8, 2024 from 9 am-12:15 pm for this year’s Merry Mission Market. For a list of organizations that will be joining us that morning and to participate online throughout December, see the Merry Mission Market information on the GUMC website later this month.

Volunteers Needed to Deliver

The prayer shawl ministry of GUMC began in 2006. Knitters met in various homes or here at the church, praying for recipients as they knit. Currently, Maureen McKay-Drummond has been making these beautiful works of loving art.

When a member receives a shawl, they receive a booklet with the following words:

“This shawl has been lovingly made and prayed over just for you. May it bring you happiness in knowing you are loved and remembered in prayer. May it wrap you in warmth when you feel cold, uncomfortable, or just need a hug. This shawl was knitted to wrap you, enfold you, comfort you, and give you solace. It was knitted with blessings, with love, and with prayers. May it warm your heart and strengthen your spirit, for the Lord is close to you each day.”

Volunteers deliver shawls to church members who are homebound or in the hospital/rehab. Elder Care Ministries will assign your special folks, and you choose when you’ll deliver to them. While your delivery is a ‘one-and-done’ ministry, we hope you can have time for a visit with them.

Folks light up as they marvel over the softness and color of the shawls. It’s perfect for keeping their neck and shoulders warm. Join in this ministry to volunteer and delivery these treasures.

Contact our Elder Care Ministries director, Susan Crowson, at scrowson@germantownumc.org to learn more and to receive your special member for delivering their shawl.

YOUR CHURCH TRUSTEES at work...

Chapel

The work in our chapel is in full swing, as we move toward the refurbishment of this worship space. The building itself dates back to 1929, which is 95 years ago. The last known update inside the chapel was done in the 1950’s, when the pews were added to replace the theatre chairs, the red carpet was added, and the current lighting was installed. In the 1960’s, the two-story building behind the Chapel was added, and the choir loft was closed in to allow access to this new part that housed the church offices and classrooms.

The chapel is being refurbished to ensure that it remains a respected and well-used place of worship for years to come. Long-time members of our church are funding the main costs associated with the work. However, designated gift accounts have been added to receive donations for the chapel and the piano that has been restored for the chapel. Also, a grant was received from our endowment fund for the audio and visual equipment that will allow this room to be utilized and shared within our total facility.

The physical aspect of this project was started in August, after many months of planning. With an expected construction period of two to three months, we’re hoping for completion this month. Once a date is known, plans will be made for a celebration. Thank you for your prayers and patience during this chapel project. We anxiously await its completion.

Exterior lighting

Exterior lighting throughout our campus has been studied this year, to understand our current situation, so that we can build upon it. In October, a meeting was held to focus on our lighting environment and to identify the needed next steps. It was recommended that we create a project management team that can guide us through the process. We are looking for those in our congregation who are familiar with exterior illumination (any Clark Griswolds among us?!) and are able to help guide our church on this important visible display. This group will work with the City of Germantown, to ensure that we have the absolute best and brightest lighting for the safety and integrity of our church. Please let me and/or Anne Bush (Campus Operations Manager) know if you are willing to serve on this project team. As decisions are made to enhance our facilities, we will provide the congregation with updates. Continued...

Olec parking lot

We’re happy to announce that a project we have been working on for several months is finally to a point where we can share it with the church. Many of our members have told us that exiting from the OLEC, especially on Sundays, is a bit difficult due to the flow of traffic. The Trustees have been working with the City of Germantown and an engineering firm to determine how we can remedy the situation. Documents and drawings are now in the works, and, when ready, will be presented to the city so that a permit can be filed to connect the OLEC parking lot to the street that runs between our property and St. George’s. To allow a smoother exit, this connection will be created at the southwest back corner of the OLEC parking lot and will enable traffic to have access to the street light at West Street. We expect the approvals to be done within the next few weeks and hope that the actual roadwork can be completed by the end of the year. We will keep you posted as the process moves along.

The Board of Trustees values the input of all of our church members and welcomes any ideas that you have to enhance our property. We will be delighted to review and work with you to bring your ideas to fruition. Remember that the Trustees are responsible for our church property, so please be sure to contact myself or Anne Bush before starting any project. This allows the church to be informed in advance of the action and provide the needed approval.

I know I speak for all of us when I say we are grateful for our church and how it shows our belief in each other and our place in this community.

Membership

Ann Horner

Germantown United Methodist Church welcomed Ann Horner into membership on Sunday, October 6, at our 11:00 traditional worship service. She joined by transfer of her membership from a sister denomination in the Memphis area. Her Welcome Friend is her husband and church member, Jacky Horner. They are members of the Lamplighters Sunday School Class.

When asked what about GUMC made her want to become a part of our church community, she replied, "The church is so warm and welcoming. Also, I have been attending with my husband and we love our Sunday school class."

Please put it on your calendar! The GUWF Christmas Cookie Shoppe at Germantown United Methodist Church is an opportunity for church members and friends to purchase festive and beautiful homemade cookies and candies to enjoy or give as gifts during the Christmas holidays. The funds raised will be given to the missions supported by the Germantown United Women in Faith.

All who attend will receive a bakery box and gloves before walking through the Fellowship Hall, selecting from over one hundred different cookies and candies that are labeled and beautifully displayed.

After choices are made, the boxes will be weighed and sold for $10.00 per pound. There will be one pre-order day on December 8 to order cookies if you cannot attend the sale. Payment is required at the time of your order.

To make this a successful and fun event, we need everyone’s help! Between now and December 13, we need volunteers to bake 12 dozen of one kind of cookie (approximately 3-4 batches of this one cookie recipe). Cookies can be frozen if appropriately wrapped. We are so grateful for your hard work in making these beautiful treats, so make sure you pack them carefully! If you cannot bake, but still want to help, donations are appreciated, and there are many volunteer opportunities available.

Get creative! We want cookies that are made from scratch and out of the ordinary so that we can offer our members, friends, and family incredibly special holiday treats. PLEASE, NO CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES! We will have some available, because everyone loves them, but we could have too many!!!

Please bring your cookies to the church Fellowship Hall on Friday, December 13, any time before 3 pm.

For more information and to sign up to make some cookies, you can do one of the following:

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are often reminded to give thanks and be grateful, but did you know that making a habit of intentionally practicinggratitude can have positive effects on our health?

Benefits of Gratitude

Intentional gratitude practice can stimulate the release of dopamine, a “feel-good” neurotransmitter, which enhances feelings of joy and contentment and can create a positive feedback loop, where the more gratitude we express, the more our brain seeks out situations that elicit these rewarding feelings. Gratitude practices also activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “rest and digest” functions that counteract our “fight or flight” responses. This can lead to a sense of relaxation and reduce stress markers like cortisol. The amygdala, which is responsible for emotional processing and fear response, has shown a diminished response to stressors among those who engage in expressing gratitude regularly.

How to Practice Gratitude

These neurophysiological effects offer insight into the ways in which gratitude can positively affect our mental health by decreasing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. A review of over 70 studies found an association between higher levels of gratitude and lower levels of depression. Additional studies have shown that people who have a grateful mindset report higher satisfaction with life, strong social relationships, and more self-esteem than those who don’t practice gratitude.

Gratitude Journal - Take a few minutes each day to write down a good thing in your life or something that went well and why you feel grateful for it.

Change in Perspective - Identify something that makes your life easier (e.g., indoor plumbing) and then imagine your life without it. What would that mean to you?

Gratitude and Misfortune - Identify a time or event in your life that was difficult. Were there any positive outcomes that you can now be grateful for? Did you learn anything about yourself that you wouldn’t otherwise have learned, and did it change you for the better?

Sharing Appreciation- Make an effort to express gratitude directly to the people you are thankful for. Write them a note or give them a call, and tell them WHY you are thankful for them.

This gift drive supports the children at the United Methodist Neighborhood Centers in Memphis. These children are in need of coats, mittens, hats, clothes, toys, and books. Please be sure to check out our Angel Tree, which will be decorated with the needs and wishes of our little angels, in the narthex

Please be a Christmas Angel for a child less fortunate.

WOW - Worship On Wednesday

WOW will have its last meeting of the semester on Wednesday, November 13. This will also conclude our preschool “Manners” program and the third grade small group, “Learning to Use My Bible,” with Ms. Carla and Ms. Janice.

Thank you to the generous groups who provided dinners for WOW: Agape, Alpha, Apostle, Asbury, Emmaus, Lamplighters, Seekers, and Wesley 2.0 Sunday school classes, and the Health and Wellness Committee.

The children love the opportunity to eat together, and we couldn’t do it without your help!

Acolytes needed for Traditional Worship Service!

Third Grade Bible Sunday

Third Grade Bible Sunday, a time-honored GUMC tradition, took place Sunday, Sept 29, during all three worship services. 20 GUMC third graders received personalized, embossed Bibles during the presentations. Two days prior, these same students attended a Friday night Bible retreat at the church. They enjoyed dinner and snacks, energy-burning Bible-centric games, and a special worship service focusing on God’s word being our light. We compared Bibles to flashlights. Just as a flashlight left in our backpack cannot provide light in darkness, a Bible left unread on a shelf cannot provide guidance and light on your journey through life.

FamilyFall

On Saturday, October 26, GUMC children’s ministry hosted our annual Family Fall Festival at the Owings Life Enrichment Center! Children enjoyed carnival games, face painting, balloon twisting, pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, a bouncy house, an inflatable corn maze, a real fire truck and police car, and so much more!

A huge Thank You to the following adult Sunday school classes who assisted with games and activities: Alpha, Asbury, Agape, Celebration, Emmanuel, Lamplighters, Seekers, and Wesley 2.0. Also, a special thank you to the hospitality committee, children’s council, our local firefighters and law enforcement, and all the other volunteers who helped make this event a huge success!

Families with young children (and older people who are children at heart) are invited to attend this special GUMC tradition on Saturday, December 14, from 9:30-11 am. Children will walk the path of Jesus’ birth. They will begin with the angels, move to Bethlehem for Jesus’ birth, visit the shepherds, and finish with the wise men. Germantown United Methodist Preschool (GUMP)

We love this new season, enjoying all the beauty of God’s creation: vibrant leaves, cool breeze, pumpkins, delicious apples, and more. Our sweet friends returned from fall break, and we enjoyed hearing about their adventures.

Our current unit includes topics relating to “Harvest Happenings.” Our friends have enjoyed using their imaginations as they dressed for fall harvest parties, raked leaves on our playground, played games with one another, and heard stories of the season.

Our classes had a visit from the wonderful Germantown Fire Department! The students saw the fire truck and all the equipment. They also learned what to do in case of a fire. The firefighters reminded us to have a practiced meeting place, but for safety, with vehicles arriving, the meeting place should never be somewhere across the street.

GUMP is grateful for this time of year, especially as we prepare to be with family and friends, celebrating traditions and counting our blessings.

Youth

Chloe Granberry, Director of Middle School & Confirmation | cgranberry@germantownumc.org Caasi Grove, Director of High School Ministries | cgrove@germantownumc.org

The confirmation class of 2025 had a wonderful time experiencing our Temple Israel and Cathedral of Immaculate Conception field trips! At Temple Israel, our host gave us a tour of the whole building. We got to see the worship spaces, a kosher torah, their collection of Judaica, and got to experience a Shabbat service. At Immaculate Conception, we were in awe of the beauty of the cathedral, and we learned a lot about the impressive iconography of the space, before we participated in Mass. There was so much to learn from our Jewish and Catholic neighbors!

We are so excited for our upcoming November GUMC Youth events! We start off the month with our annual Crave Retreat, a perfect time to get away from all the hustle and bustle of our regular lives and worship God as a community. We will also have our annual dodgeball tournament during Element on November 17, and our Element Friendsgiving celebration on November 24. There is so much November fun in store for our GUMC youth community!
