My wife and I were once talking with someone who had recently received some bad health news. The person told us, “You know, there really is a peace to it all. If I’m healed, I’m healed. If not, then God will give me what I need. There really is a peace that passes understanding, and you can’t know that until you have it. But when you have it, you know it.”
Tim Carpenter Senior Pastor
As we begin a new year, it is natural to consider priorities. As I get older, my perspectives have changed on what is important. As the Lord has dealt with me patiently, I continually discover that what is in my heart brings far more peace than anything I might possess.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,” the psalmist once said. What does that phrase mean, “I shall not want?” Does it mean that God will provide things in such abundance that we will never want? I see a different perspective. I believe that God makes a promise in this Psalm, not to give us everything we want, but rather to do away with our wanting desire. Did you ever want . . . to not want? The Apostle Paul spoke about learning this: “I know how to be humble, and I know how to prosper. In each and every situation I have learned the secret of being full and of going hungry, of having too much and of having too little. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”. Philippians 4:11b-13 What a wonderful state of mind that the Lord can give. Can you truly say today, “I really don’t want anything?” May our New Year begin with a prayer for God to take away our desire to want things, and to trust God as only a sheep trusts its shepherd to provide. And thereby find a peace that passes understanding.
