In 1875, Friedrich Küppersbusch founded Germany’s first stove factory in the Gelsenkirchen district of Schalke: F. Küppersbusch & Söhne, which started out producing handcrafted coal-burning stoves. The company’s founder evidently had his finger on the pulse of the times: just five years after the firm was established, it began using large-scale production methods. In the following years, it continued to grow rapidly: by 1913, it was the biggest specialised factory on the continent and had a workforce of 2,500 employees.

Before it reached its 90th anniversary, Küppersbusch was offering a complete range of kitchen appliances, including gas cookers, extractor hoods and refrigerators. round 1 0, the fitted kitchen made its way into German households – and Küppersbusch was one of the first producers to manufacture the built-in appliances for it. In the years that followed, the Gelsenkirchen company continued to have a lasting impact on the built-in appliances market with innovations like ökotherm, its catalytic cleaning technology for ovens and stoves that was launched in 1985. But since 1993, design has also been a major focal point, with the company successfully participating in design competitions ever since. More than 60 of its products have won national and international awards to date, including such major and prestigious prizes as the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, various Red Dot awards, the iF Design Award and the Platinum Award for Design Excellence . In 201 , K ppersbusch was appointed a foundation member of the German Design Council, and one year later it was accepted into the circle of Major German Brands featured in the Council’s series of books by the same name.
