A Message From the Foundation President

When last I wrote to each of you, I did so from my home office (aka our guest room). And while I write to you today, again from my “home office,” I am optimistic to continue to see signs of life returning to normalcy, including, working back in my “real” office several days a week, going out to eat, executing travel plans, and the announcement of a Hokie football season with fans back in Lane Stadium this fall! Indeed, Manor rentals are picking back up, most of the weddings at the Manor this summer are moving forward, and in July, the German Club Alumni Foundation Board of Directors Executive Committee met at the Manor for our first inperson meeting since the late summer of 2019, with plans at present to bring our full Board together later this fall.

While we were able to successfully pivot to a virtual format over the past year, it sure will be good to see some familiar faces at the Manor.

To that end, I hope many of you (to the extent you are comfortable with) will consider returning to the Manor this fall for a football game and/or will make plans to join in our 130th Anniversary celebration in Blacksburg on the weekend of April 2, 2022. One thing the experience of this past year has likely impressed upon each of us is

the importance of fellowship – and what better way to do so than returning to the Manor and seeing old friends and making new ones. With a return to Saturday night at the Manor for the 130th – this reunion promises to be a great event all around!

In closing, this will be the last time you hear from me in the Forum, as my second term as President of the German Club Alumni Foundation will come to an end next spring. It has been an honor and privilege to serve in this role, and I remain grateful to the Board of Directors for entrusting me with this responsibility. I cannot express enough my thanks to Mike Carisetti, Scott Guichard, Ben Nicoll, and Tommy Yambrick, whose commitment and dedication to their roles as Executive Director have made my job that much easier. And I remain indebted to my fellow members of the Executive Committee – it has been a privilege to serve with this group of men, each of whom I am lucky to consider a good friend.

The State of the German Club Jack Proctor, Class of 2023, Club President

It’s not often that you are able to identify that you are in the midst of history. We were there during the 2020-2021 school year, both as a nation and as the German Club. Not having shut down since WWII, the German Club made the decision in the Spring of 2020 to discontinue all operations, as all students were sent home due to the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. The 2020-2021 school year found us entirely online, both for class and for German Club business meetings. The town of Blacksburg set an ordinance saying that only 10 people could be together in one place, and even then, they should wear protective masks. This presented a major challenge to Club operations.

The Club members were tasked with making sure our fellowship remained firm and constant, despite not being able to gather in large settings. Much of this came from living with one another and doing what we could.

Fellowship took the form of hikes, basketball, going to the shooting range, and whatever other small things Blacksburg had to offer. There were no football games to go to. Cassell Coliseum remained empty, echoing as the Hokies took on ACC foes in a hollow gym. A once lively college town was anything but.

As the year progressed, some of the restrictions were eased. The 10-person limit became 25, and then eventually 50. We could then gather at the Manor, have cookouts, and revive Thursday Night Traditions. English Field opened up to the public at limited capacity, and thankfully so, because the Hokies baseball team had one of their best seasons in recent memory. As the end of the semester approached, we seemed to be headed back towards normalcy, or at least as close as we could. The COVID-19 pandemic heavily limited our activity in the 2020-2021 school year, but we still had some eventful highlights.

In October, our President, Andrew McCaffrey, was crowned as homecoming royalty. That marked three straight years of a German Club man being crowned as King/Royalty.

Virginia Tech made the change from king and queen to royalty). Andrew’s campaign, “Knock Out Cancer with McCaffrey,” focused on supporting pediatric cancer patients and survivors.

On February 25th, a group of over 20 members in addition to former Executive Director, Ben Nicoll, and current Executive Director, Tommy Yambrick, took a day trip to Winterplace in West Virginia to ski and snowboard.

This was the first big group event we were able to do all year. A few members spent the day learning, getting their feet under them while some were going off jumps or weaving through trees. We were some of the first ones there and the last ones to leave.

This spring, the Club took on the task of completely gutting and redoing the Club Room down in the Manor basement. Funds were provided by both Club members and German Club Alumni, as a result of the highly successful 2021 Virginia Tech Giving Day “Club Room Challenge.” The first order of business was replacing the ceiling tiles with something a little more modern, and definitely a lot cleaner. That was completed over one weekend before starting on drywall repair. There were various holes throughout the room that

had to be fixed before painting. While this was going on the old molding and carpet were ripped out. The carpet was looking dingy, and we felt it might be better to put in something that is easier to clean. A few guys led by Trenton Whitfield and Joe Eversole put in a lot of work to get the drywall and painting done. The new paint is an offwhite that is simple but gives the room a cleaner feel. The flooring that we decided on is floating vinyl plank that has a grey-brown hardwood look. With our remaining funds, the Club intents to outfit the room with updated furniture and equipment, including a recently donated ping-pong table. We are happy to say that the Club Room now looks brand new, and that the hard work and hands of club members made a noticeable improvement to the Manor.

Starting on April 1st, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Town of Blacksburg were now letting up to 50 people to gather. On April 24th, German Club wanted to get the guys together for a date party to send off the seniors before they embarked on a new journey.

A few members hosted at their off-campus apartments and we made sure to follow all guidelines regarding the mandated limit. It was truly a night to remember.

Some of us hadn’t seen each other in person in over a year. However, the way the night flowed and the way we all connected together showed what those bonds of brotherly love, built by the Ritual, are really about. It doesn’t matter how long we are apart or what obstacles we face. German Club men share a bond like no other, a bond that can win in a war of attrition against one of the worst global pandemics in human history. This was the first time a lot of us saw a light at the end of a very long tunnel. It gave us hope for the year ahead.

Nine days later, on May 3rd, we sent off our seniors with senior gavel pass. They were able to gather at the Manor one last time to share that moment with one another. It’s nights like these that remind us of our burning passions for the Club. It’s these nights that will live in our memory forever, a memory that we share with our forever brothers. As the Club listened to 22 German Club men talk about their highs and lows of college and the Club, it was apparent that these guys will be missed dearly, not only by the Club, but also by the University.

Although the 2020-2021 school year was perhaps one of our least active years ever, it was also one of our most memorable. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, we were able to continue the good Name of the of the Club. Members were able to create memories here and there, and we were even able to add new members.

These will be the guys that enrich the German Club of tomorrow.

As we approach the next academic year, we will be tasked with bringing the Club back to a state of normalcy. With half of the Club never seeing the German Club in a normal year, this will not be easy. We know that, and we are ready. It’s a daunting challenge, but a challenge that we welcome with open arms.

A Profile of Leadership

Let Me Be Frank Leadership Book Study Joe Eversole, Class of 2023, Leader

The primary goal for balancing the Leadership aspect of the motto this year was to host two isolated book groups about Leadership in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters. In recent history, the Club has collaborated with faculty advisor Dr. Herbert Bruce to create brief Leadership sessions once a month. These sessions have been extremely helpful in the past, but any concept is easier to communicate and subsequently put into action when you have a referential foundation for understanding. In this case, books proved to be the answer. After presenting the idea to the GCAF, the Club received funding which made possible the purchase of copies of the chosen books for all attendees during both semesters. The generous contributions of the GCAF, combined with the thoughtful guidance of Dr. Bruce, allowed the Club to craft three Leadership discussions per semester around the selected books.

During the summer of 2020, we were and still are in the midst of two of the most dramatic historical events in recent decades. We are living through a pandemic and a social justice movement that has shaken the nation and forced us to divide at a time when we need to come together. Through all of this, members of the German Club were inspired to enhance their Leadership skills and commit to positive change within the Club and at Virginia Tech. Therefore, the selected theme aimed to convey Positive Change Through Positive Leadership. The book Man’s Search For Meaning, by Viktor Frankl, was selected due to its ability to augment this theme effectively. Man’s Search For Meaning is a harrowing account of Frankl’s experiences in Nazi 6

concentration camps during WWII. The principles delivered in the book were applied to influential leadership and informed followership, and the book group in Fall 2020 not only met this desired theme head on but led to discussions about isolation, internalized racial bias, and personal paradigms, that extended into the Spring 2021 semester and beyond.

For the second book, the chosen theme was: How to Lead at Virginia Tech. Coming off the coronavirus pandemic, there will be many challenges that both the Club and University will face in reopening. To make this transition, the German Club needs leaders that know how important traditions and team building are to the German Club and to Virginia Tech. Therefore, Frank Beamer’s autobiography Let Me Be Frank was the selected book for the Spring 2021 semester. Coach Beamer’s memoir tells the story of how he changed the Virginia Tech football program and the university during his time coaching in Blacksburg. It is the belief of the German Club that there is no better way to revisit the kind of leadership that the Club was built on than by learning how Frank Beamer did it at our very own Alma Mater. For the last book session of the semester, the Club was fortunate enough to get in touch with Coach and have him join us on a video call. Coach was able to give Club members his take on how to build an effective team and how to maintain relationships with the right people. The discussions held in the Spring 2021 book group shaped the way that the Club conducted membership during the spring and emphasized the

importance of building close relationships in and outside of the Club.

One Club member commented, “I never expected the impact that the groups would have on me. Any work I put into structuring the discussions pales in comparison to the inspiration I took from every member that participated over the course of both semesters.”

As we stand right now, Leadership could go in any direction for the 2021-2022 school year.

The soft plan for the Club centers around the idea of professional development. How can the Club mold productive, thoughtful, and influential leaders in the workplace and beyond? Also, how can we prepare the next generation of Club members to uphold the good Name that has been built over the last 129 years? With the help of the GCAF, the guidance of Dr. Bruce, and the efforts of every Club member, we of the German Club intend to attack these questions head on.

Facilities Update

The German Club Manor with its club offices, apartment, membership entertaining spaces, boardroom, museum, and perhaps “second to none on campus” ballroom and Alumni Hall continues to anchor the presence of the German Club in the Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, and New River Valley communities. The Manor’s grounds and Guest House offer further accommodations and ample areas for events and tailgating gatherings. This all comes at a high cost… mostly wear and tear from high usage and associated maintenance/repair costs. The 2020/2021 COVID-19 world we have all been living through did offer some much-needed time without usage and events to further assess and prioritize necessary repairs and improvements and address things without folks in the facility. We all look forward to a return to meetings, tailgating, and events at the Manor.

The Club’s Facilities Committee met via Zoom on several occasions and discussed facility needs, revisited its 5-year projections, and provided the GCAF Executive Committee with priorities and cost estimates to assist in budgetary proceedings.

Additionally, the Committee looked at ongoing maintenance and repair items to also be included in the budget for expenses throughout the year and coming years. In an effort to be fiscally conservative and following guidance from the GCAF Finance Committee in 2020/2021, the Facilities Committee prioritized the ordering of new carpet for the Gordon Ballroom and the main foyer. In addition, the completion of much needed repairs to the Manor’s Porte Cochere (covered entry) and completion of exterior power washing, trim and siding repairs/ replacement, and new painting/staining of all siding 8

and trim were funded in order to further the life of the Manor. The cost for these two areas fell lower than the amount typically budgeted for each year’s capital improvements, and allowed the Finance Committee additional “reserve” funds during a time of COVID-19 usage restrictions and expected revenue reductions.

Installation of the new carpet in the Ballroom and Foyer is scheduled for late in 2021 and in time for the Club’s 130th Anniversary event set for April 2022. The new carpet will bring a fresh new look to the Manor interior and will surely compliment the recently completed audio/visual upgrades to the Gordon Ballroom. A new color pattern with a “classic” design along with a slight “nod to the past” added purple color running through the carpet will offer a wonderful change to the Gordon Ballroom and foyer.

During 2020 and into 2021, other miscellaneous repairs and replacements that were time sensitive matters and concerns were addressed, and additional items such as HVAC system upgrades and repairs will be completed in the coming years.

Manor improvements under consideration and scheduled for 2021-2023 include: further lighting and dimming system installations to the Gordon Ballroom, drapery and dance floor replacements, and Dekker Boardroom improvements. HVAC system improvements/replacements throughout the facility will receive high priority over the coming years.

I sincerely thank the members of the Facilities Committee for their continued commitment of time and expertise to the needs of our facilities and remain excited to see COVID-19 restrictions continue to relax so that our membership and the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg community can again gather at the Manor and enjoy the wonderful fellowship our home has to offer.

Foundation for the Future

We have come to the final stretch of the Foundation for the Future Endowment Campaign.

We have one year remaining and need $250,000 in gifts to reach our $2 million goal. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the over 600 donors who have contributed to date.

The GCAF will have greater financial stability with a larger endowment because the annual interest earned will provide a reliable source of funding for our operating and project budget. In a small way, we benefited from a larger endowment in the past year. The effects of COVID-19 eliminated two significant sources of funding for the GCAF operating budget, Manor rentals and football parking.

Your ongoing support of the campaign coupled with a larger endowment (and prudent budgeting by our Finance Committee) provided us the financial stability to make it through a difficult year. Right now, annual giving is the largest source of funds for the GCAF operating budget. As the endowment continues to grow in the coming years, we expect interest earned from the endowment to become the largest source of funds. The need for annual giving will never go way; we just hope to be less dependent on it in the future.

So, in this final year of the endowment campaign, how can you help? As always, gifts of any size, small or large, are appreciated. Every contribution makes a difference.

- Contribute $2,500 to have a personalized stone paver installed at the Manor on the Cutchin’s Terrace (See the sidebar for more details). If you make your contribution by January 1, 2022, the paver will be installed in time for the 130th German Club anniversary celebration which will be hosted at the German Club Manor in April 2022.

The German Club Alumni Foundation’s (“the Foundation”) Board of Directors, through its Finance Committee, is committed to delivering regular updates on the finances of the Foundation to all alumni, with the goal of keeping our alumni informed on the financial health of the Foundation.

The Foundation’s fiscal year runs from July to June. The information presented throughout this article will be for the fiscal year 2021, which ran from July 2020 through June 2021. The information presented is subject to change, as at the time of writing, the fiscal year had just ended and the annual audit of the Foundation had not yet been finalized.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the Foundation and its operations. As communicated in my prior year letter, our fiscal 2021 budget preparation required a number of very conservative estimates due to the uncertainties related to football parking and in-person gatherings (weddings, events, etc.) upon which the Foundation relies heavily for revenues. While we were able to generate some Manor rentals throughout the year, the loss of football parking had a major impact on the Foundation in 2021. In anticipation of decreased revenues, multiple expenditures were either deferred or approved only as additional funding sources were secured. Thanks to the efforts of our outgoing

Executive Director, Ben Nicoll, the Foundation was able to secure much needed relief funds from the SBA and Commonwealth of Virginia (shown above in the Other Income line item).

Most critically however, was the incredible generosity from you, our alumni base. During these trying times, our giving levels for the year exceeded those seen in the financial crisis of 2007 - 2009, which is the level we had optimistically budgeted to achieve for the fiscal year. Due to the increased level of giving above expectations, the Foundation was able to move forward on various capital projects which had initially been deferred. The Finance and Facilities Committees prioritized projects which, if not addressed, would have created greater issues in the future.

Foundation Operations remained consistent with the prior year. Manor and Guest House Operations decreased significantly as a result of restrictions on gatherings. These decreases were partially offset during the year by increases in cleaning expenses which were incurred to ensure the health and safety of the Executive Director, the Club, and our guests.

Several significant capital improvements were made to the Manor and Guest House, many of those improvements are outlined in the facilities article in this issue of the Forum. Finally, German Club, Alumni, and Virginia Tech Relations expenses were consistent with the prior year.

As mentioned above, due to COVID-19, the Foundation made the decision to defer or postpone large capital expenditures, including those related to the 130th anniversary celebration. The

Finance Committee has continued to evaluate the Foundation’s liquidity and its ability to meet all upcoming obligations.

To prepare a budget for the fiscal year 2022, the Finance Committee continued to assess areas for potential cost savings. Given the recent positive news on the football season, as well the lifting of in-person restrictions, we have made conservative estimates for levels of income and expenses which are expected to be incurred during the year. These estimates are consistent with prior years, with the exception of estimates of cleaning costs, which have increased meaningfully. The fiscal year 2022 budget contemplates certain approved capital expenditures for major projects and also includes a prioritized listing of additional projects to be undertaken if revenues are sufficient. The Board of Directors held a virtual meeting in April and unanimously approved the Finance Committee’s proposal.

Thanks to the efforts of many, the Foundation has weathered much of the storm of the COVID-19 crisis and maintained its fiscal health. It should be noted that the success of the Foundation for the Future Campaign directly contributed to the Foundation’s ability to adapt and maintain through these uncertain times.

In summary, the Foundation is wellpositioned to remain a strong supporter of the German Club, university, and community. The Board of Directors looks forward to the continued success of the Foundation for the Future Campaign.

We look forward to gathering in Blacksburg during the first weekend of April 2022 for fellowship and reminiscing with classmates. Planning for the 130th Anniversary Celebration began in earnest in January 2020, and like many other people that have had trouble planning events over the past 18 months, we have continuously adapted our plans and worked with our various vendors to ensure all our alumni and friends. We will be returning to the Manor for Saturday evening’s Anniversary Ball and will have the entire front parking lot and Cutchins Terrace covered with a conditioned tent and additional restroom facilities to allow for increased social distancing and increased fresh air circulation.

Manor Football Parking and Tailgating

Hello sports fans! After an agonizing oneyear hiatus from filling the Manor lawn with cars; generators; grills; refreshments of all type; and most importantly, German Club alumni, students, and our dearest friends, the GCAF is happy to report that it is looking much more and more like it’s time to tailgate! All indications point to a return to fan attendance in Lane Stadium for the 2021 Virginia Tech football season. And of course, that means parking and potentially tailgating at the Manor.

Mark your calendars! The Virginia Tech Hokies home opener is currently scheduled for Friday night, September 3rd versus the University of North Carolina Tarheels. While Tech has won four of the last five matches, to include the wild 4341, six overtime victory on October 19, 2019, the Hokies will be looking to avenge last season’s 4556 loss at Chapel Hill. The rest of the season looks rather interesting, to include a three week stretch of home games against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on October 9th, Homecoming on October 16 versus the Pittsburg Panthers, and the always difficult

Syracuse Orangemen on October 23rd. The colors of the changing autumn leaves should be just perfect for these games, being totally in harmony with the Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange uniforms of our beloved Hokies.

Pricing details, to include guest passes, reservations policies, submission of guest names, and other details will remain similar to our 2019 policies.

Rather than repeat them here, those details were provided on the announcement that you received in the mail and/or e-mail in mid-July. And of course, we continue to offer the always popular discounted season parking pass pricing schedule, based on your previous year’s donations (July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021).

Executive Director Notes

What a wonderful new year we have embarked upon! I am hoping this letter finds you well and that you are sharing my optimism for the future.

Having now mostly settled into the role of Executive Director with the GCAF, this publication seems to be a good time for an introduction of myself to the German Club alumni. I grew up in West Virginia, came to Virginia Tech in 1983, joined the German Club in 1985, and managed to graduate in late 1987 with a Civil Engineering degree. I was a Battalion Commander during my time in the Corps of Cadets, and then spent 25 years as a Naval Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy. My service time was spent between three airframes, as a Bombardier/Navigator in A-6E intruders, then as a Radar Intercept Officer in the back seat of F-14 Tomcats, and finally as a Commanding Officer and Weapons Systems Officer in F/A-18F Super Hornets. After that, I taught high school mathematics for 6 years, and finally found myself returning to Virginia after many years in Florida, Washington, California, Japan, Germany, 34

Texas, and Afghanistan. My wife Laura and I reside in Roanoke County, my son is a VT grad in the Richmond area in the building construction profession, and my daughter is a Texas Tech grad, still in Lubbock, TX as a nurse. And on June 5th of this year, she gave birth to our first grandchild!

Under Ben Nicoll’s excellent stewardship and with spot-on guidance from the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, the GCAF successfully navigated a quite unusual and difficult period, the likes of which most of us had never seen or experienced. The challenging fiscal decisions that were made in 2020 and into 2021 under limited operations have positioned us well for the expected return to “far more normal” operations at the Manor, in the Club, and within the GCAF.

Looking forward optimistically, we have recently seen a return to Manor rental events during this summer, local and university organizations have begun filling the Manor’s calendar with events for the coming academic year, the Club is preparing

for a return to normal University operations, the 2021 football season is nearly upon us, and – if you have not already heard – we are the hosting a 130th Anniversary celebration at the Manor on April 2, 2022. You should of course expect to receive communications on these and many other topics throughout the coming seasons, via print, mail, and electronic mediums; and maybe even an occasional telephone call.

And as was also noted earlier in the Forum, please contact me regarding paver inscriptions if you have qualified during the Foundation for the Future campaign.

Which leads me to an appeal to all German Club Alumni. I am asking that you please ensure your contact information is updated so that the GCAF can be best positioned to get all our upcoming and exciting event information to you in a timely manner. I estimate that there are over 500 German Club alumni out there that we do not have a valid e-mail address on. And while it is certainly understandable that many may not have or use an e-mail address regularly, I have noted that there are many young alumni who have moved on from their vt.edu accounts and have not recently updated their professional contact e-mail addresses with the GCAF. As we continue to look to minimize office expenses, it is clear that routine administrative contact via electronic means is far less expensive and much timelier than the mail (paper, envelopes, postage, etc.).
