Farmer Ward Road, Kenilworth CV8 2DH

A very warm welcome to the launch edition of KNOW, the comprehensive, seasonal guide to family activities and events in Warwick District. A local parent myself, I felt I often missed out on some of the great things taking place simply because I didn’t hear about them. Warwick, Leamington, Kenilworth and the surrounding towns and villages have so much to offer families, many for free, and yet it’s only through word of mouth or individual research that parents hear about what’s out there. Because of this I decided to produce a magazine for like-minded parents. KNOW aims to be the definitive source of info for parents to save you time and effort and ensure you never miss out again. The mag is a one-stop-shop for events listings, and details every venue you may ever wish to visit - from family-friendly art galleries to hidden gems such as parkland great for picnicking. Because we don’t feel you should have to spend a fortune to enjoy a family day out, you’ll find loads of free and cheap places to explore featured inside, all recommended by fellow local parents. Plus you’ll find lots of money-off vouchers to help make the pennies stretch even further! You’ll also find a special section just for the kids to help keep them entertained during the Summer holidays. It’s packed with competitions, puzzles, quizzes and activities. If there is something we’ve missed please do let us know so we can share it with readers next issue. We give a free year’s subscription to the magazine to everyone who contributes information, ideas or photography so it’s well worth getting in touch! A huge thanks to all the parents who’ve completed surveys for us, giving us their top tips and hidden gems - they’ve been invaluable. We hope you enjoy the magazine, but above all we hope it helps you get the most out of your family time together. Our next edition will be out in time for the Autumn half term break so watch out for it in stores at the end of September - or sign-up for a subscription so you never miss a copy! Our Autumn edition includes a special baby and toddler section, detailing all the fantastic groups and activities out there for parents of preschoolers, as well as listing organisations offering after-school and weekend term-time clubs suitable for school-age children, so don’t miss it.. Have a great Summer!

THE HERBERT COVENTRY CITY CENTRE

Jordan Well, Coventry CV1 5QP T. 024 7683 2386 theherbert.org info@theherbert.org

WHY?

DON’T MISS..

HELPFUL TIPS

Thoroughly deserving of its title of The Guardian’s Family Friendly Museum 2010. Packed to the rafters with hands-on, interactive exhibits, regularly changing children’s trails, family art and craft activities at weekends and during school holidays. The museum prides itself on its family-oriented approach, and is both buggy and breast-feeding friendly. The building itself is worthy of a visit - with a stunning extension making the space light and airy. And the best part - it’s all completely free! The Herbert even has its own mascot, Herbot, and there is a Herbot map which guides families around suitable galleries and exhibits and includes the all important details such as location of the loos and baby-change facilities. The museum is located next door to Coventry Cathedral and is open from 10am (12 noon on Sundays) until 4pm daily, all year round.

Elements - ideal for children of all ages, with musical instruments, ammonite brass rubbing, crystal 3D jigsaw, sticker worksheets and feely boxes of hidden items to identify by touch.

Use the gloriously spacious and clinically clean upstairs toilets (loos downstairs are old and cramped). The cafe is great, offering a range of tasty salads, sandwiches and hot buffet, or there is a Pizza Express housed in a stunning medieval building, and a Lloyds bar which offers a cheap children’s menu only a 2 minute walk away. (Browns next door to The Herbert is adults only). Turn up in good time for the free family art and craft sessions as these prove very popular. Visit the temporary exhibitions if you have time as these often have really well thought-out childrens activities, such as the Eygptian Pharoah Top Trumps or grafftiti wall, giving you a chance to enjoy the exhibition in peace. There is limited on-street parking and a small pay & display car park opposite the museum (cheap at weekends), or you can use the pay& display opposite Coventry Sports & Leisure Centre and walk up past Coventry Cathedral.

Discover Godiva - loads of dressing up opportunities, jigsaws, interactive exhibits, puppets and colouring. History Gallery - get hands-on with the weaving loom, brass rubbing, smelling a medieval toilet, bomb shelter, rebuilding the city, jigsaws, medieval masks and even dressing up in a real suit of armour! Visual Arts - under 7s can build towers from the soft blocks, or chill out with one of the selection of art-themed children’s books. Peace & Reconciliation - older children can vote on complex issues of war and forgiveness and play the Flashpoint game to lead people through a crisis.

The Herbert, worthy winner of The Guardian’s Family Friendly Museum Award 2010, combines stunning architecture and modern facilities with family-oriented interactive exhibits.

MARKET HALL MUSEUM WARWICK

Market Place, Warwick CV34 4SA T. 01926 412 500 warwickshire.gov.uk/museums museum@warwickshire.gov.uk Open 10am-5pm (11.30am-5pm Sun)

WHY?

It’s got dinosaurs! And a giant moose skeleton. And an enormous stuffed bear. And a real life beehive. And Stone Age weapons. The list goes on.. It’s small but perfectly formed - just the right size for whiling away an hour or two. Archaeology, Geology and Natural History collections. Free entry.

DON’T MISS..

The Bear and Ragged Staff - the symbol of Warwickshire. This huge stuffed brown bear is wonderfully imposing and kids love the old pictures of him being shampooed by museum staff. The Icthyosaur - the lifelike model of this Mesozoic marine reptile hangs from the ceiling, bringing to life the history of Warwickshire’s prehistoric past. The Beehive - can you spot the Queen (she has a green spot painted on her back) in amongst the hundreds of workers in the glass-covered hive?

HELPFUL TIPS

Facilities are very limited. There’s no lift so wheelchair users can only visit the ground floor. Nearest toilets and cafes are outside in Market Square. Lots of pay-and-display parking, plus metered on-street parking outside, or use Sainsburys car park for free if using the store. There’s a small gift shop and gallery with temporary exhibitions.

DON’T MISS..

Ryton Road, Bubbenhall CV8 3BH T. 024 7630 5592 warwickshire.gov.uk/parks parks@warwickshire.gov.uk Open 8am-7pm daily

One hundred acres of lakes and parkland, with cycle trails, den building, adventure playgrounds, miniature railway, pond dipping, sensory garden and organised wildlife activities and events, including regulars such as the Toddler Trundle and Creepy Crawlies Kids Club. Entry is free, but there is a fee for the car park (£2) and for some activities.

Den Building - an area of woodland has been dedicated to den building (behind the pond dipping area). Piles of trimmed, prepared branches, logs and twigs provide the perfect materials for your grand creations. (Or you can take over one previously constructed!) Miniature Railway - runs every Sunday 1-4pm throughout the Summer.

HELPFUL TIPS

There is a small cafe serving hot and cold meals, plus a shop and bike hire. Loos are in a portakabin and very cramped but there is a baby change facility. There are various gravel trails which make for great, safe bikeriding. Don’t miss the small woodland playground by the lake. It’s designed for older children but four-year-olds still find it fun. Take a picnic and find a peaceful spot overlooking the lake.

Wolston Lane, Coventry CV8 3LG T. 024 7630 3517 gardenorganic.org.uk/gardens enquiry@gardenorganic.org.uk Open 9am-5pm daily

Ryton now boasts ten acres of display gardens and a fabulous interactive visitor centre called the Vegetable Kingdom where children can get really hands-on. Loads of facilities including garden centre, shop, restaurant and play area. Official prices state £12 for a family of four (under 5s free), but there’s usually a free child entry promotion during school holidays.

Children’s Garden - a two-storey play house, totem pole, pond and musical instruments made from natural materials, plus a welcome seat for parents! Pass the World’s Biggest Flowerpot to reach this oasis, tucked away behind the Thrive garden. Biodynamic Garden - try out the eerie sound effects created by standing at the garden’s centre, then have a run up The Mount to get a bird’s eye view of the gardens and use your own shadow to tell the time on the Sun Clock.

HELPFUL TIPS

Use the toilets before you enter the gardens as it’s quite a trek back round again. Join the Webbs club for free and enjoy reduced entry and vouchers for free hot drinks. The restaurant is very good but a picnic in the Children’s Garden is cheaper and great fun.

Wilmcote, Nr. Stratford CV37 9UN T. 01789 293 455 shakespeare.org.uk/ museum@warwickshire.gov.uk Open 10am-5pm (11.30am-5pm Sun)

Nestled away in sleepy Wilmcote, this tourist attraction offers a tranquil, chocolate-box setting and slow-motion pace of life. Staff in period costume mill about, feeding the chickens or chopping firewood and the kids get to experience life of a time gone by, with animal encounters, adventure playground and willow tunnels.

DON’T MISS..

The Willow Tunnels - a favourite with all ages, these natural tunnels lead into larger chambers complete with wooden toadstool seating. William’s Words Room - your chance to create a literary masterpiece for all to read, and even write with a quill. The Mangelitsa curly-haired pigs - near the willow tunnels are a pair of delightful dreadlocked pigs.

HELPFUL TIPS

There is a shop and a small cafe, plus good toilet and baby change facilities. There are picnic benches near the playground and sheltered seating in the barn near the cafe. There are hardly any rubbish bins, so make sure you take a plastic bag which you can throw away back at the cafe. One ticket purchase entitles you to a year’s free return entry, so make sure you keep your receipt.

KENILWORTH GREENWAY

ABBEY CINEMA & RURAL CINEMA

KENILWORTH-BERKSWELL

KENILWORTH

T. 024 7630 5592 warwickshire.gov.uk/kenilworthgreenway parks@warwickshire.gov.uk Open all year

WHY?

The Kenilworth Greenway is a disused railway route which runs from Berkswell to Kenilworth. The track was removed in the 1960s and Warwickshire County Council took it over and made it a linear Country Park in the 70s. It provides a scenic and safe, traffic-free walking and cycling route and bridleway, with plenty to keep keen wildlife spotters happy!

DON’T MISS..

Crackley Woods - the Greenway runs alongside Crackley Woods, so stop off to explore the 35 acres of ancient woodland and try and spot some of its resident mammals and birds or create a natural sculpture from woodland materials for others to find. Kenilworth Common - although not directly on the Greenway, the 30 acre common is easily accessed from the Coventry Road entrance, and offers nature lovers an abundance of wildlife, including common lizards, glow worms and grass snakes.

HELPFUL TIPS

The Greenway is linear, so you’ll have to retrace your steps or use it as part of a longer, circular walk. There are four main entrances: at Coventry Road, Crackley Lane Bridge, Cromwell Lane and Berkswell.

Abbey Cinema @ Kenilworth Youth & Community Centre Abbey End Car Park Kenilworth CV8 1QJ T. 01926 855 205 thekenilworthcentre.com andynorman@warwickshire.gov.uk Saturday matinees at 3pm

STRATFORD DISTRICT

Moving Pictures: Community cinema screening at participating venues throughout the District, including Harbury, Snitterfield, Kineton, Marton, Ratley, Priors Marston, Lapworth, Southam & Tiddington T. 01789 260 609 stratford.gov.uk/leisure/ruralcinema.cfm lana.long@stratford-dc.gov.uk

WHY?

Give the children a taste of cinema how it used to be! Community cinema schemes are bringing back the buzz of going to the movies, with all the latest releases screened in intimate, familyfriendly surroundings, many in the idyllic Warwickshire countryside. Each venue is different and run by volunteers in most cases, with many selling delicious home-made cakes and cold beer alongside the popcorn. And all this comes at a fraction of the price of multiplexes.

HELPFUL TIPS

Abbey Cinema screens every Saturday during term-time. Moving Pictures is a joint venture between Stratford District Council and local communities, where volunteers run monthly screenings.

HILL CLOSE GARDENS

REDWINGS HORSE SANCTUARY

ST JOHN’S HOUSE MUSEUM

WARWICK

OXHILL

WARWICK

Bread and Meat Close, Warwick CV34 6HF T. 01926 493 339 hillclosegardens.com centremanager@hcgt.org.uk Open 11am-5pm Saturdays and Bank Holidays, 2pm-5pm Fri & Sun (Easter-October only).

WHY?

A little bit of peace and tranquility in the middle of Warwick. These restored Vistorian leisure gardens originally gave shop owners the chance to relax in their own little patch of green space, but now they are open for the public to enjoy. Children’s Garden Trails are available for any visit, charged at £1 per child. (Choose from Lottie the Ladybird, Henry the Hedgehog or Art the Amazing Time-Travelling Ant!) There are also special seasonal, themed family days. Entry is normally £3 for adults and children free, but for special family activities there is a small charge for child entry with accompanying adults free.

HELPFUL TIPS

The themed family events don’t happen often, so put them on the calendar so you don’t miss out. The Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Autumn Apple Day have already become annual traditions for many families. The Hill Close Centre is housed in a slick new building and offers clean, modern facilities, including baby change, small shop and refreshments. Hill Close Gardens produce is on sale throughout the growing season.

12 [KNOW] SUMMER 2011

Banbury Road, Oxhill CV35 0RP T. 01508 481 000 redwings.org.uk/visiting info@redwings.co.uk Open daily 10am-5pm

WHY?

The perfect day out for animal lovers! This equine sanctuary postively welcomes families to come and cuddle the rescue horses, ponies and donkeys, and learn about the organisation’s work. Budding equestrians can learn all about horse care with demonstrations from the professionals. There’s a cafe serving decent hot and cold food, a shop, a new children’s play area and designated picnic area. Entry is completely free but your offspring may persuade you to adopt a horse or two..

DON’T MISS..

The Residents - Your chance to make a real fuss of the adoption equines Dylan, Felicity, Will, and dinky Wensley. Miniature Shetland Ponies - They don’t come much cuter than these!

HELPFUL TIPS

On the adoption residents’ birthdays the centre holds special birthday celebrations, complete with party games and equine birthday cake. Worth looking out for on their website. Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on the lead at all times. There are baby-change facilities and good wheelchair access. Free on-site parking.

St John’s, Warwick CV34 4NF T. 01926 412 132 warwickshire.gov.uk/museums museum@warwickshire.gov.uk Open 10am-5pm Tues-Sat (& Bank Holidays), 2.30pm-5pm Sundays

WHY?

The recently refurbished museum offers kids the chance to see life through the eyes of a Victorian child, complete with full-sized classroom, canes and slate boards, and kitchen with mangle and water pump. There are interactive play zones, with activities, puzzles, games and puppets to play with - all with a historical theme - and a new ‘discovery’ area for under 5s. Upstairs is the Regimental Museum, which is also worth visiting. Boys seem to be particularly keen on the swords and dressing up! Entry to both museums is free.

HELPFUL TIPS

The museum has no lift, so the Regimental Museum is inaccessible for buggies and wheelchairs. There is a small gift shop, and toilets with baby change facilities, but no cafe. There is very limited free parking at the front of the museum, otherwise use the pay & display at St Nicholas’ Park - there’s a path that runs from the car park to the back of the museum. The garden is lovely and an idyllic spot for a picnic. During the holidays there are family activities held in the building at the back of the museum. See DIARY.

WHY IS GIFTED A DIRTY WORD 24 [KNOW] SUMMER 2011

?

R

eactions to the term ‘gifted’ are rarely positive. In children, giftedness has connotations of being odd, geeky - a know-it-all. For parents, it implies being pushy or competitive. Let’s face it, ‘gifted’ often conjures up visions of spoiled, obnoxious offspring and loud, bragging parents. Even the word precocious, which the Oxford English Dictionary defines as having developed certain abilities at an earlier age than expected, has become a derogatory term, frequently paired with ‘brat’. Although this response is unjustified and unfair, it is a natural reaction. No-one want to hear that someone else’s child is more developed than their own. But we have to get past the notion that gifted somehow equates to better. In the same way that children with learning disabilities need to be identified so they can receive appropriate educational and emotional support, giftedness is a mental state and should surely be treated in the same supportive manner. It’s worth noting that a gifted child has high learning potential. This is not the same as being high achieving. We’re not talking about the child who works hard and gets straight As. Nor the child who finishes their work well ahead of the rest of the class. People are often surprised to learn that gifted children can be highly self-critical and often struggle to

We need to celebrate and embrace the abilities of our future scientists, engineers and artists and stop being embarrassed of high learning potential complete work because it’s simply not good enough. They can get low marks because they don’t answer questions the ‘right’ way, or simply because they want to fit in. They can have behavioural problems caused by being understimulated, or due to experiencing particularly intense emotional reactions. They’re certainly not always the easiest pupil. Likewise at home. When your child questions your authority, or asks for proof that the world is round at the age of two it’s tricky. When they refuse to get dressed because all their clothes rub, or complain that everything is too loud, it’s hard (Gifted children are frequently physically sensitive.) And when they are inconsolable because they are afraid of dying at four years old, it’s heart-breaking. (Such children often experience powerful empathy and strong emotional reactions.)

Unfortunately for parents of gifted children, it’s not easy to let off steam to friends in the playground, and they fear being labelled as a ‘pushy parent’ by teachers. So, where do you turn if you think your child is gifted and need advice and support? The National Association for Gifted Children is a charity that helps families identify giftedness, provides advice on handling behavioural issues and supports parents through an educational consultancy service, so they’re an excellent first port of call. As a society, we need to nurture the abilities of a future generation of scientists, engineers and artists, and support them both educationally and emotionally. It’s time we stopped treating gifted as a dirty word. Identifying gifted children> Activities for the Summer break>>

Roll up, roll up for an entertainment extravaganza for kids – the Summer Reading Challenge 2011, Circus Stars. It’s fun, it’s FREE, it’s at your local library this summer.

Parents and carers love the Summer Reading Challenge because children discover the joy of reading – and kids love it because it’s fun! This year’s theme is all about taking to the stage. Children are given a colourful cut-out circus stage to start their challenge – to read six books of their choice over the long summer break. As they read, they collect stickers to complete their stage set and help the six Circus Stars put on a show.

Be a part of the UK’s biggest reading promotion for Children! The Summer Reading Challenge is brilliant. I love it!

KIDS WILL LOVE circus stars

Harp reet, 11

For children taking the Summer Reading Challenge, a regular trip to the library becomes a highlight of the holidays. It’s not just about books! Most libraries have lots of special events during the holidays, and it’s a great place to meet and make new friends. It’s a stick up! Kids love collecting stickers and they’ll be keen to complete the Circus Stars stage set. Plus we have other incentives to make it all a fun experience. Illustration: Nick Price

My children thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Collecting stickers was a fantastic way to keep them reading.

HOW TO BE A CIRCUS STAR Tips for parents and carers Read yourself! Don’t feel guilty about sitting down and reading a book, newspaper or magazine. Your kids will soon start copying you! Create a special time when you can sit down and enjoy reading together. Five minutes a day can make all the difference. Your child can read any six books as part of the challenge; picture books, chapter books, even audio books.

www.circus-stars.org.uk On the Circus Stars website, there’s a whole lot more going on! As well as games and activities, children can read meet their favourite authors, keep track of their reading, and much more!

Join ‘Circus Stars’ at your local library - it’s completely FREE!

Bright children answer the questions

Gifted children question the answers

Is your child gifted?

According to the NAGC there are a number of traits that are likely to be demonstrated by gifted children. If you recognise many of those listed then give the NAGC a call. • A quirky sense of humour • Extensive vocabulary/mature speech at a young age • Extremely curious/questioning • Early or avid reader • Learns rapidly and easily • Extraordinary feats of memory • Enjoys problem-solving • Extremely good at puzzles • Highly creative • Unusual and vivid imagination • Shows strong feelings/opinions • Strong belief in justice/fairness • Questions authority • High standards/perfectionist • Dislikes repetition • Emotionally sensitive • Hypersensitive to smells, sounds, touch or light • Compassionate/moral sensitivity • Energetic (not hyperactive) • Excellent with numbers • Doesn’t require much sleep • Interest in abstract terms such as time and space

Gifted or bright? Perhaps the easiest way to define giftedness is the manner in which children learn, or the way they arrive at solutions. Gifted children often come up with ‘silly’ ideas, rather than ‘good’ ones, only need to be told once in order to remember, demonstrate strong opinions and can be intense. Gifted children tend to be good at guessing, manipulating information and are inventive. They can get deeply involved in a project, coming up with off-the-wall ideas.

Give it a go.. Gifted children can take ‘Mum, I’m bored’ to a whole new level, so here are some projects to keep the whole family stimulated throughout the Summer holidays!

Websites to inspire! nsa.gov/kids The National Security Agency site includes code breaking challenges and ‘Make It@Home’ projects such as cipher discs and scytales. kids.nationalgeographic.co.uk/ A beautiful site with bags of info on planet Earth, games & competitions. howstuffworks.com Did you know that when goats get stressed their muscles tense up and they fall over, appearing to faint? Plus other fascinating titbits.. naturedetectives.org.uk Join for weekly challenges and reward charts and stickers, or simply dip in to their stock of nature activities and project worksheets, such as snail racing or den building. jacksonpollock.org Utterly addictive! Release that creative energy. Just try not to fight over the mouse.. iwaswondering.org Ponders questions such as ‘Can a robot tell how you’re feeling?’.. childrensuniversity.com Work towards a Kids College or Childrens University Certificate by taking part in a range of local activity sessions on a vast range of topics.

Tic Tac Chess

Draw a 4x4 square board and shade alternating squares like a chess board. Each player chooses four different chess pieces and lines them up behind their side of the board. The aim of the games is to create a line of four pieces, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally, using the chess moves of your chosen pieces. An excellent game for strategic thinking.

Photography Project

The 365 Project (365project.org) was set up to encourage amateur photographers to document a year of their life through a photograph each day. How about trying out a mini version covering the school holidays, using a digital camera, camera phone or disposable?

Write a book

There’s no limit to the topics children can write about. Try a family history, local town guide, joke book, instruction manual, cookery book, poetry or short story collection, or a book about a favourite animal, person or hobby. Include illustrations and photographs, or glue in mementos.

Invent something

For inspiration, or just for fun! Write the names of household machines and objects on scraps of paper then choose two at random and create a nonsense invention. Then create an intruction manual and ad campaign!
