Homecoming brings energy to campus

This week marks several traditions including Songfest and Homecoming football game

By ERIC BALMER Editor-in-Chief Homecoming week is here and in full swing. Many events have been scheduled for the entire week, with Songfest on Friday followed by the homecoming football game on Saturday afternoon. There have been subtle changes in the week of homecoming, which should keep students interested.

Each day of this week, there has been a theme. To start off the week, students had the chance to get celebrity treatment and get their picture taken on the red carpet outside the caf, as part of “Movie Star Monday.”

Tuesday brought “Disney Day” to campus, which encouraged students to dress up as their favorite Disney character. Along with dressing up as Elsa or Mickey Mouse, students could attend Campus Worship and receive a Tiger Nexus credit.

Western Wednesday has been scheduled for Wednesday (think a nice cowboy hat like Dr. Rasberry), while Thursday is Superhero Day, which is a day to dress up as

There are students who love Homecoming week and the spirit it brings to campus.

One of those students is Freshman Marcus Price. When asked about what he was most looking forward to about this week Price replied, “Definitely the football game.” He believes this week’s high spirits will translate well for our team. “I hope that the extra energy on the campus will help us continue to play well. I want to see a great game,” he added.

Homecoming week has always brought a plethora of opportunities to show GC Pride, and this year shouldn’t fall short of expectations.

 A man has filed a $5 million law suit against several government organizations after a 16 pound pine cone hit his head while he was napping in a San Francisco park. He’s needed two surgeries so far and will likely have permanent brain damage.  A car thief being chased by police through the sand dunes of Perth, Australia decided to evade capture by driving into the ocean. He didn’t make it too far, and police were able to wade out and capture him.  In Bangalore City, India, there is a 9,000 acre lake so polluted by chemical waste and sewage, that it produces a thick foam which blows around the city whenever it rains. The lake even caught fire recently, which it has been known to do in the past.  In Moldova, Ukraine, a sanitation worker displeased by the re-election of a Prime Minister protested by driving his truck up to his office and dumping raw sewage on the front steps.

He now faces a $190 fine.  In Sarasota, Florida, a man was arrested for a DWI after speeding through a neighborhood, swerving off the road and crashing into a house then running away. He claimed his dog was driving the car and that he had done nothing wrong.  Two Italian fisherman found a wild boar swimming in the sea about four miles from the coast. They managed to get the pig on board and released it back on shore.

Violence increases in the Middle East

It seems that the Middle East, especially Israel and Jerusalem, is as far from peace and coexistence today as it was in 1948. Palestinians and Israelis continue to enter into bloody battles, and the encounters seem to be escalating.

In the last month, at least 27 Palestinians and eight Israelis have died in aggressive person–on–person combat.

On Tuesday alone, three Israelis were killed, and another 20 were injured. (foxnews.com) Early on Tuesday, a Jewish man attacked another man outside an IKEA, stabbing him without warning, because he mistook the victim as a Palestinian with his Middle Eastern appearance even though the victim was a Jew as well. The 22 year old victim was only moderately wounded.

An earlier tweet by Hamas, from Sept. 15, said that Israel’s escalation was an “act of war.” Since then, the group has vehemently addressed the issue of escalating violence dozens of times. Not all demonstrations were violent, however; the majority have been peaceful.

If major changes do not happen soon, the situation has the potential to escalate into a full-blown war.

Tigers seek big homecoming win

By ERIC BALMER Editor-in-Chief The Georgetown College football team hasn’t gotten off to the start they were hoping for this season. Due to some tough competition and unlucky breaks, the Tigers found themselves 0–4 through the first few weeks.

However, GC may be on the rise; as they’ve been on a roll lately, winning their last two games heading into Homecoming week.

Two weeks ago, the team was able to get the W at home.

On a chilly and rainy October 3, Georgetown crushed Kentucky Christian University by the score of 44–0.

Then, last week, the Tigers

played at Bluefield College and had another shutout performance, winning with a score of 14–0. GC’s defense was on fire, with Junior linebaker Jordan Kindred recovering a fumble for a touchdown.

The Tiger defense also caused an interception and turnover on downs for Bluefield.

A testament to the defense of Georgetown was the naming of Kindred as Mid–South Conference Defensive Player of the Week last week.

With two decisive victories under their belt, the Tigers hope to use the momentum and gained confidence to bring a much needed homecoming victory to campus.

The game is this Saturday, October 17, at 1:30 p.m.

By EVAN MOORE Opinion Editor There is an annual kissing competition held in Riccione, Italy, that features several different areas of competition in which participants kiss in unique ways. The most popular events are basketball kissing and underwater kissing.

While there can be a sizable debate on whether or not this can be considered as a sport, I digress. It’s a physical activity, I suppose, and it’s hilarious.

Proclaimed as the “World Kissing Day games,” hundreds of people partake every year to make this one of the strangest traditions and funniest events to appear in Italy, Europe, and the world. (itnsource.com) “Underwater kissing proved to be by far the

most popular as several couples challenged each other in the longest kiss in apnoea, while being rigorously timed by referees,” the website says in its short biography of the games. Underwater kissing seems to be a feature for the games with not only the largest amount of participation, but also the largest number of witnesses.

The original purpose of the games, aside from just to be weird and European, was to encourage couples to come have a good, fun time in a safe and comfortable environment.

KHS Club celebrates Medicine Month

By KAITLIN FAHEY Features Editor The Georgetown College Kinesiology and Health Studies (KHS) Club is celebrating: Exercise is Medicine Month throughout October.

Each week, a member of the campus community will be interviewed about how they incorporate exercise into their day to day activities.

Dr. Steven Carter, a professor in the English department. played sports when he was younger and said that because of this, he has always

been in the habit of being active, though there have been periods in his life when he has been less active than he is now.

“I enjoy being active more than not being active,” he said.

Dr. Carter’s physical activity routine includes walking every morning, doing Crossfit several times a week and occasionally incorporating rowing and weightlifting. He also enjoys golfing when he has the time.

In order to incorporate activity into his schedule, Dr. Carter gets up earlier than he normally would for his daily

walk, and blocks out an hour in his day for a Crossfit class. He said that a benefit he receives from regular physical activity is feeling better all around.

When asked about his biggest motivation, Dr. Carter said that most of the time, he enjoys exercising.

“Crossfit helps with days I don’t feel like doing anything because there are other folks in the class and that helps me get moving. Having a coach for the class helps a lot, too,” he said.

Dr. Carter said that instead of being guided by thrills and

big achievements, he prefers to set small goals for himself in regards to physical activity.

“I often set small goals for myself in whatever exercise or sport I’m doing, and pretty much anytime I either reach one of those or know I gave it my best shot; I enjoy that,” he said.

A proud native of Henderson, Ky., Alex’s time as a student at Georgetown has left a positive and enduring mark on his campus and community due to his dedicated pursuit of his passions for politics, theater and faith.

Alex has remained heavily involved in campus life throughout his time at Georgetown. In the past four years, he has served as the President of Georgetown’s theater Maskrafters, established a Catholic Newman Center and served as its director, held the SGA office of Vice President of Academic Affairs and been a student representative on Georgetown’s Strategic Planning Council.

As he put it, “I want to be sure that I give back to this college community which has provided so many opportunities for me, whether it is in the form of my time, talents or finances.”

Addressing all freshman and future students at the college, Alex concluded with a piece of parting advice: “Get involved in the life of the campus and community early and often. Georgetown has proven to be a wonderful home for myself, and getting involved is the best way to discover that home for yourself.”

Songfest is a competition among each of the residence halls on campus. Each group prepares an eight minute long skit centered on the theme for the year.

As the name of the show implies, these skits typically involve song and dance and are intended to showcase each group’s Georgetown College spirit.

The theme of this year’s Songfest is “Lights, Camera, Action,” which is also reflected in the painted benches outside of each residence hall.

Straight from Compton to the Theaters

By ARIANNA SCRUGGS Sports Editor Upon checking out the dollar theatre in Lexington a few days ago and asking a friend what movie he wanted to see, he began talking about how there was a movie about music and that’s what he wanted to see because it was supposed to be really good and is about some old rap group. I had no idea what he was talking about. I watched the trailer for the movie, Straight Outta Compton, saw that it had a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and decided to give it a try. Sure, it wasn’t really my kind of movie—I’m a girly–girl who listens to Taylor Swift and music from another country—but I’ll try anything once.

The beginning of the movie was pretty much what I had expected to see. Set in Compton, California, in 1986, the movie follows Eric Wright, Andre Young, and O’Shea Jackson, otherwise known as Easy–E, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube respectfully, along with a few other friends as they create the group N.W.A, which stands for “N****s With Attitude,” and are shot to popularity.

Ice Cube’s lyrics, rapped by Easy–E, revealed what life was like for black people during that time.

They told people about the things that happened in their lives, about their families and about the ways that they had been treated wrongly. After one incident of being treated unjustly by the police, Ice Cube wrong a song called “F*ck Tha Police,” telling how it was wrong for the police to do things to them, to beat them and search them, when they weren’t even doing anything. Shortly after releasing the song, N.W.A. went on tour, and the movie shows how pubilicity can change people, sometimes for the better and sometime for worse.

thing, and that it gave me new look and a type of appreciation for rap music. It isn’t something that I listen to, for the most part because I can’t understand what they’re saying.

It was a good glimpse into a different lifestyle for people like me, who have grown up unexposed to rap culture, and for people who are into rap music it was a good look at how far rap music has come. But it was also another look at how cruel the world can be, in a day and age where parents tend to keep their children sheltered from the harshness of the world until the last possible second. Straight Outta Compton shows police officers destroying a black person’s house, pulling a black man out of his car and throwing him

The police brutatlity against blacks in the 1980’s was awful, even from black cops who had somehow gotten a leg up in the world, and to see that it lasted even up into the 1990s was shocking, not in the sense that I didn’t know it, but in the sense that sometimes it’s crazy to see things like that, even if it’s things you already know.

What made the movie even more interesting to me is that it is all based on real events, and during the credits there is actual footage shown from some of the interviews with N.W.A. With so many people supporting law enforcement nowadays, it’s incredible to think that 30 years ago they were hated by many people. And it wasn’t just the blacks

that hated the police; “F*ck Tha Police” had a huge following of whites also.

It was wonderful to see a movie that depicted real life events in a way that was more entertaining than a boring old documentry.

Easy–E did, in fact, die, and by the end of the movie I felt so much for him that I was crying when he died. I found out later that Dr. Dre’s biggest regret in life is not getting to the hospital in time to visit with Eric before he slipped into a coma, and Ice Cube never visited the hospital, stating that he wanted his last memory of his friend to be happy, and that the last time he saw him was in the night club when they rekindled their friendship.

I can definitely see why the movie has a 90% rating; it has drama and some comedy, its a movie and a commentary on social justice, and without even realizing it makes you watch a 2 and a half hour long true story about a group of guys who just wanted to make music in a world that was against them, but got caught up in the fame of it all. I personally feel that this movie has something for everyone, whether you like dramas, comedys, history, or music. I feel that if there were more movies like this, that more people in the world would see that we are all the same people, all just people with dreams trying to find our way in this world and push ourselves toward a better life and final destination. I would encourage everyone to watch this movie, and to think about how we see the people around us. You may be struggling, but the people that you see around you, sitting next to you in class or standing in front of you for lunch, are also struggling, just maybe not in the same way as you.

The Dark Knight’s first debut

By JOHN WAITE Staff Writer We’re going back to the ‘80’s to look at my favorite Batman movie, Tim Burton’s “Batman.” I’m just going to say this upfront. I like the ’89 Batman movie over the Dark Knight series. This may be nostalgia talking, but I feel that things were done better in this one film than in all three of the Nolan Batman movies combined. Don’t get me wrong; I liked the “Dark Knight” and it’s version of the Joker, but I feel like it has flaws. The ’89 Batman movie did, too, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s dive into Tim Burton’s Batman.

The story takes place in Gotham

City where crime is just an everyday thing. Ace reporter Vicky Vale (Kim Basinger) is on the case of Batman, a man who has just recently shown up to fight the crime in Gotham. One of the criminals, Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson), during a raid on a chemical plant, is accidently thrown into a vat of acid by Batman. Batman flees the scene after the fight, thinking that Napier is dead. As we know, Batman is millionaire Bruce Wayne (Michel Keaton), who meets Vicky at a fundraiser at his mansion and forms a relationship. Elsewhere, Napier is alive and becomes the greatest Batman villain of all, The Joker.

He then starts to terrorize the city with Joker makeup that makes the wearer unable to stop smiling and laughing!

Batman comes to save the day with an epic battle against Joker in a bell tower.

He defeats the Joker and saves Vicky, who was captured by Joker earlier in the movie.

I love this movie. The actors were fantastic in this film. Nicholson was the star of the show. He didn’t play Joker; he played himself. I feel that the Joker is a mad man who wants to ruin people’s lives in a fun way. Nothing says this better than the end scene where Joker and his goons ride into the city on a giant Joker float playing Prince music. Keaton did a fantastic job as Bruce Wayne and Batman. He showed the wounded half of Wayne and the power, brute force and attitude of Batman from the comics.

I do have my complaints about the movie. This contains spoilers, so you might want to skip this part if you want to see the movie. Alright, now into my complaints. The big thing I dislike about this movie is how the Joker is the killer of Batman’s parents. In the comics it was either a random guy or a guy named Joe Chill that killed Batman’s parents. It kind of makes sense that Batman and Joker are tied together, but I feel like it was unnecessary. It gives it more impact if we don’t know who his killer is. He is fighting to avenge his parents by fighting faceless crime.

All in all, I still love this movie. It’s fun, gritty and still enjoyable even to this day. You can watch this on Netflix right now.

Game of the week: “Shovel Knight”

By JOHN WAITE Staff Writer Prepare your shovels, for it is time to talk about “Shovel Knight!” This being the first independent game I’ve talked about, I thought why not talk about one of the most popular and my personal favorite? The game was released in 2014 after it was successfully funded on Kickstarter, a website where people donate money to projects and in return they get special items, gifts, etc. The game is a 2D platformer like the games of the NES and SNES era. However, it takes what those games brought us and made it something amazing with newer hardware. One of the amazing factors of this game is its story.

The best way to put this game is that it’s an NES platformer with the story of an SNES RPG. The story is simple but not too simple. The opening cut scene tells us the story of Shovel Knight

and Shield Knight, two warriors who protected the land. However, Shield Knight disappeared after they went to The Tower of Fate. Since then, Shovel Knight spent his time alone until the land was taken over by the Enchantress and her Order of No Quarter. After this, Shovel Knight grabs his mighty shovel to fight the evil that is reaping over the land and to find his beloved Shield Knight. Overall, I like the story.

Yes, there is more to the story but, I’m not going to spoil it. On to the gameplay!

The gameplay is amazing. It mixes together the play styles of “Mega Man,” “Duck Tales,” and “Castlevania.” I’m most likely missing a few games, but these are the ones I noticed when I was playing the game. You play as Shovel Knight, and using your Shovel of Justice, you take out the Order of No Quarter in different areas. The shovel may be your main weapon, but you can

buy many special weapons throughout your travels. You can also buy new armor that gives you special abilities.

You can even go back to previous levels and get the collectibles you missed. The controls and level designs are fantastic.

If you die, it’s most likely your own fault. I can’t tell you how much I love this game.

One more thing I want to talk about is the Plague of Shadows DLC. It is a free DLC that, once you beat the game, you can play as Plague Knight, one of the Order of No Quarter. With this you get a new story and levels that fit his as a character. He plays so much differently than Shovel Knight. With Plague Knight you use projectile chemicals that make you play in many different ways. This is basically a brand new game and you get it for free.

I love this game. I can’t praise this game enough. Be warned thought. This game is hard and will test your skills.

The game is $15, and I think it is well worth its price. You can get this game on PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS and Steam.

Stress isn’t only caused by school

Why does it feel like students are always stressed out?

I don’t think it can be boiled down to teachers giving too much homework. It’s something larger than that.

The American Dream is that hard work will create a happy, successful life. However, the definitions of hard work and success have changed overtime and they don’t seem to bode well for high school and college students of today.

Here is the common perception of how to achieve success today: get good grades and be highly involved in extracurricular activities throughout high school to create strong college applications and receive lots of scholarships, figure out your career, go to college and

I am saying that I don’t like the current formulation of the Amerihigh can Dream because it causes students so much stress. They are already stressed enough by homework, so adding the pressure of creating a whole wonderful life to the inherent stress that comes from homework just causes problems.

High schools should teach and/or emphasize how to deal with stress in healthy ways through their health and gym classes. From what I have

seen, it doesn’t seem like many public high schools make it a priority to show students how to implement stress–relieving techniques into their lives or to make sure that students are implementing them.

Students are not given proper counseling on making decisions for life after high school. Students—no, scratch that—Americans need to be taught that money is not everything; it is not the determiner of success, or at least it should not be. Students should be taught to focus on discovering what they are good at/ enjoy and to find happiness in what they discover.

Basically, I call for a revolution of the current formulation of the American Dream that helps students be less stressed.

Sure, marriage between one man and one woman is found in the Bible, but to decide it is the only proper way of marriage simply because it is “Biblical” is erroneous.

A bigger concern, in my opinion, is whether the two individuals in a marriage love each other and are willing to continue loving each other.

Unlike “Biblical” marriages,

which were often arranged, an economic decision or a form of some sort of debt repayment, marriages today are about commitment, love between two partners, man or woman, and are to be respected for that reason.

Even if marriages don’t follow a more traditional man and woman template, that doesn’t count out the love people can have for each other, and it should not bar people from continuing that love in an “official” way through marriage.

Traditional marriage and the Bible

By WILLIAM THOMAS Opinion Columnist Marriage has been quite a big topic in the news over the past few months and years.

With gay marriage becoming more widely accepted, both individually and socially, and even in some Christian groups, an important conversation has broken out on what the Christian Bible has to say about marriage.

In the United States (and elsewhere around the world), it has become more and more common for gay marriage to be

legalized. Men can marry men, women can marry women and men can marry women. The outrage behind this lies in the verses in the Bible that seem to condemn homosexuality and support a nuclear family (man and woman) as the only proper marriage.

Most conservatives, Christian evangelicals and proponents for “traditional family values” have argued that Biblical marriage is simple— one man marries one woman and that is that. They argue this “traditional” marriage is sacred in the eyes of God and is

the only “true” and “Biblical” marriage.

However, this traditional, nuclear marriage is not the only marriage that appears in the Bible, and it’s not the only marriage approved of in the Bible, so to define it as “Biblical” marriage is a bit fallacious.

One of my favorite examples is of King Solomon, son of David, whose marriage consisted of 700 wives and 300 concubines. This marriage is in the Bible, so it is Biblical.

By Raleigh Dixon BackPage Editor Growing up in America today has many blessings; blessings that are not shared by many people around the world. There is never a night as I fall asleep that I worry about whether or not my roof will collapse due to a drone strike from a foreign power (or a domestic one for that matter). There are resources everywhere that grant access to food, healthcare, education and entertainment. Since its founding, America has been known as the land of opportunity and possibilities. If you work hard enough, dream big enough and have just enough luck you can be anything that you want to be.

These are all great ideas to hold on to. Hope is an important aspect of life, and optimism has been the driving force for a plethora of amazing advancements and achievements in American life.

But I’d like to take some time, take a step back and examine the state of things in America today on a personal level.

All throughout primary education children are told things in order to foster creativity, positivity and optimism: “Everyone is a winner.”

“There is no such thing as a stupid question.”

“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.”

While on the surface these might seem like great things to say to people, especially children, in order to motivate them and convince them that the possibilities are endless, they are in fact dangerous statements that have hurt

the identity of America and prepared kids for a world that doesn’t exist.

The first of these statements can be dealt with quickly and easily. The concept that everyone is a winner is just fundamentally wrong. Logically speaking, if everyone is a winner, then nobody is a winner. It is the same as saying that everyone is a loser; thus nobody is a loser. Success and failure are indeed tied together. Failure is a necessary part of life. It is life’s great motivator.

I will be the first to admit that I was an extremely average high school athlete, and as such I experienced my own share of highs and lows while competing. Being one of the last people cut on the varsity roster my sophomore year made earning a starting spot on the court my senior year all the more sweeter. In order to do that I had to work harder than I had before until I had finally achieved my goal.

This is also true in the world of academia. Again turning to personal anecdotes, initial failure has led me to great future succeses. There is nothing like the sinking feeling that you experience when you get that first English essay back freshman year with a big red scary number circled at the top. But you learn from it, you work harder, and when you see that the final grade on the portal is an A, it makes all the trouble you went through worth it.

But if there is no differntiation between success and failure, these things wouldn’t happen. Complacency takes over and you are stuck on the end of the bench or staring at a GPA that is nothing to write home about.

Moving on, one of my biggest pet peeves throughout my educational

journey is the notion that there is no such thing as a stupid question.

This is a lie.

Every day we find ourselves confronted with stupid questions. They are asked in our classrooms. They are asked in Facebook fights. They are asked on Buzzfeed quizzes.

A lot.

They are asked by friends. They are asked by family members. They are asked by professors. They are asked by politicians. Nobody is exempt.

These stupid questions fall into a variety of categories as well.

A.) Questions that have obvious answers. I feel bad lumping professors into this category but it is hard not to do so. In a Georgetown class my fellow students and I were following along with a lecture when we were asked what forty minus twenty was, followed by an awkwardly long pause. While our professor most assuredly thought that the reason nobody raised their hand to answer was that we were disinterested or otherwise mentally incompetent, the reality was that we genuinely did not know that we would be expected to answer such an elementary question.

B.) Attempting to correlate two completely separate things. “If we let gay people get married does that mean that beastiality and pedophilia will become legal too?”

No. No, it doesn’t.

C.) Buzzfeed Quizzes. Dear God, when will they stop? Nobody needs a Buzzfeed Quiz to know what form their Patronus takes. And if they did, I’m sure that J.K. Rowling will support me when I say that there is no formula involving eye color, favorite pizza toppings and shoe size.

And finally, I wish to counter the idea that everyone is entitled to their opinion and that each opinion has equal weight in the eyes of the world.

In order to have an opinion that is valid and recognized, there are a few parameters that must be met. One of them being that is founded in these little things called facts. Here are some opinions that are popularly carried today that are in fact wrong: 1.) Global warming is a myth. The fact that we pollute the Earth at an alarming rate has nothing to do with the rising ocean levels, droughts and frequent severe weather events experienced around the world.

2.) Evolution is just a theory.

Instead of looking at silly things like fossils and evidence, we should just assume that the Flintstones was based on true events where humans rode on the backs of dinosaurs.

3.) The frequency of school shootings in America has nothing to do with the amount and availability of guns in this country. You mean this doesn’t happen in any other industrialized nation? You mean this is an almost exclusively American problem? Nah. 2nd Amendment. Guns. ‘Merica.

4.) Donald Trump is a viable candidate for the Presidency of the United States. (For the love of all that is good and holy in this universe, please, no).

In all honesty, if I haven’t said something that you strongly disagree with so far this year, I feel like I haven’t tried hard enough. Either that or you aren’t actually reading my writing. Or maybe we are just destined to be best friends. I suppose the jury is still out on this one.
