New ramp and elevator lift completed at the Chapel By ROBERT BIRD Staff Writer The beginning of this new semester brought many new changes to the campus of Georgetown College. One of the most notable changes the completion of a ramp and elevator lift to the side door of the John L. Hill Chapel. These new additions to the Chapel are long overdue, and will make the Chapel more accessible and available for the elderly and/or the disabled. The official announcement of the completion of the ramp was made on the Georgetown College Facebook page, with a quote saying, “Thank you to all the alumni and friends of Georgetown College who helped

Moving forward in this new year and this new decade, it will be amazing to witness the future changes and improvements that will be made on the campus of Georgetown College.

By BUDDY LUKENS S&R Editor Very rarely does the death of any celebrity have the societal impact that the loss of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gigi, and seven others in a plane crash. This tragedy has shown the impact that Kobe Bryant has had not just in the basketball community, but the entire world around him. This narrative makes this

tragedy all the more saddening. There are now two daughters who are now without a father and a sister and a wife without a husband and daughter. It would be a disservice is Kobe Bryant is only remembered for his 5 NBA titles, or his 81-point game, or his 15 allstar appearances. Along with the loss of a legend was the loss of a 13-yearold with infinite potential to

change the world for women, specifically women basketball players. However, he has also been an important supporter of other womens’ sports such the U.S. Women’s soccer team. In fact, “The party of nine were said to have been heading to Mamba Academy - which Bryant founded - for the second day at the youth tournament, which is aimed at teams from the third to eighth

grades” (dailymail.co.uk). Bryant’s death has unfortunately impacted even the basketball teams here at Georgetown. Freshman GC Men’s Basketball player Puoch Puoch was “devestated” by his death and the death of his daughter. When asked how Bryant affected his own basketball career, he said that “he inspired everybody- his

mentality, his game, his work ethic...he’s somebody that everybody looks up to.” Junior GC Women’s Basketball player Michaela Kennedy commented that “As a basketball player, I have learned [from him] to never take anything for granted. Kobe put all he had into basketball and all he had into being a dad, and I’ll continue to admire him for that.”

Senate continues to debate rules of Trump Impeachment trial By TYLER EVANS Staff Writer The impeachment trial of President Donald J. Trump is currently underway, and the president’s defense attorneys are putting up an aggressive stance. The defense attorneys are arguing about the basis of the House’s impeachment inquiries and the president’s rights and process of executive privilege. They are offering an alternative rationale for why President Trump froze the security aid for Ukraine and allegedly ignored advice from the former national security adviser, John Bolton, which would contradict their case. The defense also began their assault on former V.P. Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, on Monday describing what the defense said was imperative evidence of corruption that made President Trump’s interest in the case proper. Pam Bondi, one of the president’s defense attorneys, was accusing Democrats of denying the legitimacy of investigations into the Bidens because the House case depends on the premise that President Trump was only interested in the negative political impact on his rival. At a private luncheon, Senator Patrick Toomey (R) of Pennsylvania, indicated that he was open to calling witnesses if Republicans could work out an arrangement so that a witness like John Bolton, could be called in exchange for one seen as more beneficial to President Trump, such as Joe Biden, according to Republicans familiar with his remarks. Republicans are not the only ones who want witnesses on this case as the Democrats are demanding them as well; they are seizing reports that

There is new pressure for some Republican senators who are interested in the testimony from Bolton and other witnesses which could delay President Trump’s hopes for a quick acquittal. CNN is currently reporting that Bolton’s account of the Ukraine aid is quite accurate. These complications emerged on Sunday when president Trump was sensing imminent victory and spoiling for his retributions against Democrats who led the impeachment in the House of Representatives last year. President Trump has continued to deny the claims. In a series of late night tweets, he told Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was connected to an investigation on the Bidens. “I never told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into the Democrats, including the Bidens. In fact, he never

complained about this at the time of his very public termination,” Trump tweeted. President Trump’s lawyers will resume laying out their defense to the charges set against President Trump. House impeachment managers have said in a statement to the New York Times that it is imperative that the Senate hears from Bolton. “During our impeachment inquiry, the President blocked our request for Mr. Bolton’s testimony. Now we see why,” the managers said in the statement. “The President knows how devastating his testimony would be, and, according to the report, the White House has had a draft of his manuscript for review. President Trump’s coverup must come to an end” (CNN). Currently, the Republican party is not confident that they will have enough votes to block the admittance of witnesses in the trial.

Staff Writer On Wednesday Jan. 29, there will be a resume workshop inside the JonesHall-Nelson Suite from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This is a perfect chance for juniors and seniors to get their resumes started or even polished as they approach graduation and future job opportunities. This is not just for upperclassman, as everyone is welcome. On Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m., the Greek men’s groups on campus will celebrate Chapel Day. The festivities will be held on the quad side of the John L. Hill Chapel. Be sure to watch all of the new fraternity members run out out of the chapel with their newfound colors proudly displayed. Just like Women’s Chapel Day, this is open for all students to attend and watch.

After classes on Friday, there is the opportunity to go check out fun shops and activities in Georgetown! From shopping at the local antique shops to axe throwing, Georgetown offers more than what we may see on the surface. The Georgetown Peddler’s Mall is a flea market that contains a plethora of antiques, clothes, vintage items and fun knick-knacks at thrifty prices. You can plan on spending a couple of hours inside the building checking out the unique items in the shop. The Peddler’s Mall is located off of Outlet Center Drive just before the Theatres of Georgetown. Friday and Saturday, they are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while on Sunday they are only open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Just behind the Peddler’s Mall, a place called Battle Axes gives people

the awesome, yet peculiar, opportunity to throw axes. They also offer spaces to play pool and other casual games. Walk-ins are available, but the prices will be higher and it is not guaranteed that you will be with your friends. The company recommends to make a reservation to ensure your spot, as it gets busy during the weekends. Reservations need to be made 48 hours in advance. They also have house rules, so be sure to check those out before heading to the facility. This Monday Feb. 3, at 9 a.m., the nominations for Belle of the Blue and Beaus Too will be open. This is an annual event presented by GAC that is a time-honored tradition here at Georgetown College. Winners are selected from a behind-the-scenes essay and personal interview as well as the

main competition on Saturday, Feb. 22. The winning Belle and Beau each receive a $1000 scholarship and represent Georgetown College in the Annual Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival in Pineville, Ky. Once again, GAC is hosting their weekly Trivia Night inside the Mulberry Café at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. Last week’s winners took home $45 in total from the prize winnings. The first-place team won $20, the second-place team won $15, and the third place team won $10. Past themes for trivia night include Harry Potter, Pixar, Disney, superheroes and a variety of television shows. Finally, the Ambassadors of Diversity (AOD) are asking for all of campus to wear all black on Monday, Feb. 3 in support of Black History Month.

assault. These small movements led to larger banquets and benefit dinners for organizations all throughout New York City with one bringing in $250,000 in one night. However, this movement was only getting started. Over the years, this small play ran off-Broadway, and cities all over the United States began to acknowledge V-Day and the fight to empower women in their journeys. Additionally on V-Day, Ensler allows organizations all over the country to put on benefit showings of “The Vagina Monologues” as fundraisers for local organizations. On Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Ward Room of the LRC, there will be a benefit showing of “The Vagina Monologues.” Tickets will be $2 per student and $5 per non-student. All proceeds will be donated to Elizaebth’s Village, a nonprofit in Georgetown that is dedicated to helping women and children in any situation especially those that are in

dangerous situations. Also on the 18th, from 6-9 p.m., an exhibit in the LRC titled, “What Were You Wearing?” will be on display. This exhibit is based on a poem of a similar name that lays out what the author was wearing at the moment she had been assaulted. Furthermore, if you have been assaulted then be on the lookout for various boxes around campus from Feb. 3 to Feb. 7. These small boxes, located in bathrooms, dorms and around the LRC will allow victims to anonymously write about what they were wearing when they were assaulted. All submissions must be anonymous. No names or identifying information of any kind will be accepted. The description should include what the person was wearing, something general about the location or setting of the assault and, if desired, they can include their feelings in general. Acknowledgement, knowledge and

support are how to face assault head-on and it is up to us to start the discussion.

“The Vagina Monologues” comes to GC

By ASHLYN REED

Staff Writer Every 92 seconds, an American is assaulted. Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. One in five women experience some form of assault at least once throughout college and one in 16 men will experience the same (rainn.org). Sexual assault is painful, traumatizing and very real. One of the best ways to combat sexual assault is through education and acknowledgement. In 1994, Eve Ensler wrote a play titled “The Vagina Monologues” that brought attention to the stories of many women who had been assaulted. The play is compiled of stories, interviews and the gut-wrenching reality of one of the many hardships which some women face in their lifetime. In 1998, on Valentine’s Day, a group of women decided to take the calling even further. This launched an entire movement. The women began to march in the streets and destigmatize sexual

Staff Writer Bradley Perkins, a freshman runner for Georgetown College, had the most team-leading finishes out of any athlete for the Tigers in the 2019 cross country season. While Perkins has had tremendous success on the cross-country course this season, it has not been without adversity. Perkins has made a name for himself through his accident-prone nature, dating back to high school competition. Perkins has had many unfortunate accidents. Some of the most memorable incidents that took place during this cross-country season include tripping over a water bottle which rolled onto the track during practice, getting stung by a bee (which he is highly allergic to), attempting and failing to clear a six-inch chain off of the ground, stepping on a staple that went into his foot and rolling his ankle on numerous occasions. While this may seem like coincidental clumsy misfortunes, they have led to some serious setbacks. These setbacks include multiple sprained ankles and a minor stress fracture. These injuries are serious for a collegiate runner, who is logging anything between 40 and 60 miles a week. Perkins faced many setbacks, yet his resiliency is what allowed him to display such success in his first collegiate cross-country season. Perkins recorded multiple personal bests this season

including a 16:30 5k (3.1 miles) and a 28:00 8k (4.95 miles). Those personal bests were recorded along his way to first place team finishes at the Berea College invitational, Asbury invitational (where he placed seventh overall), and the Mid South Conference Championship. Perkins is a valuable asset to the Georgetown College cross country team due to his success on the field as well as his team bonding capabilities. Perkins’ accidents have turned into an infamous topic of conversation for the team as a whole. While this may seem insensitive, Perkins’ ability to bounce back from such setbacks with a positive and humorous attitude is what has made these accidents so well known among the team. Perkins’ ability to unite the cross-country team through his unfortunate mishaps and his fun-loving personality have made him an essential factor towards building the close-knit relationship shared among runners at Georgetown.

The new PGA Tour season is well underway and this past weekend, some of golf’s brightest stars gathered at Torrey Pines in La Jolla to compete for the Farmers Insurance Open. The star-studded field included the always familiar faces of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler while also hosting to some of the tour’s best newcomers: Joaquin Niemann, Colin Morikawa, Cameron Champ and Xander Schauffle. With the huge names on that list it was sure to be an exciting week. It wouldn’t be any of those guys making any noise on the first day as Sebastian Cappelen and Keegan Bradley both carded six-under 66’s on Thursday to jump out to the early lead having 20 players within two strokes after an up and down first round at Torrey. Rory and Bubba Watson were among some other big names in the top 10, as they both fired a five-under 67 to start the tournament while Jon Rahm, Marc Leishman and Kentucky native J.B. Holmes brought in

four-under 68’s to round out the top 10 after day one. Tiger Woods, who was playing his first competitive round of the calendar year shot a solid three-under 69 on day one and sat comfortably on the top half of the leaderboard. The big story on Friday in round two was the near course record breaking round of 10-under 62 by Ryan Palmer to catapult him into the lead going into Saturday. Brandt Snedeker also played well Friday to put himself in great position for the weekend. There was a cluster for the third spot with Matthew NeSmith, J.B. Holmes, Sebastian Cappelen and Jhonattan Vegas all tied at seven-under. There weren’t too many recognizable names atop the leaderboard as Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffle and defending champ Justin Rose all failed to make the cut and were not able to qualify for the weekend. The road didn’t get any easier however, as Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm, Rory, Jason Day and Tiger were all going to be around for the weekend and each with enough fire power to make a charge and win. Tiger looked as if he might

Georgetown College Weekly Athletics Preview

This is expected to be yet another entertaining week for sports teams and individuals representing Georgetown College. On Thursday this week, the Georgetown Tiger Basketball teams will be hosting conference rivals, Shawnee State, in a double header. The men’s basketball team currently holds a 19-0

record and is being heralded as one of the best NAIA teams to ever play a season. Meanwhile the women’s team is having an up and down season playing against Mid-south competition, but they are showing they have the potential to take down teams when the tournament rolls around. The track & field team

will hit the road for their third indoor meet on Saturday in Indianapolis. This will be the first meet where the team will have all athletes from the throwing, sprinting, jumping and distance running disciplines. The week will be closed out as the men and women basketball teams travel to UPIKE for a double header.

make a moving day charge as he was four-under through his front nine on Saturday but would go on to card a one-over 37 on the back to finish at three under putting him in a tie for seventh. The big story on Saturday, however, was Jon Rahm, who would card a seven-under 65 to claim the top spot headed into the final round on Sunday. Rory was hot on his heels after posting 67 on Saturday and sat three shots off Jon Rahm going into the last round. Ryan Palmer who nearly broke the course record on Friday came back on Saturday to grind out a one-under 71 and keep himself in the mix to win on Sunday afternoon. The big name on Sunday was one who had been lurking all weekend, but hadn’t made too much noise up to that point. Marc Leishman, who was four back heading into Sunday, would birdie the 72nd hole to fire a 65 to edge out the surging Jon Rahm by one shot to claim the title. Rahm had a chance at the last second to send it to a playoff with a long eagle putt, but it would not drop and he would finish second by one shot. He had nothing to hang his head about though as he played solid golf all week and is sure to have a successful season. The top five would be rounded out with Brandt Snedeker and Rory McIlroy in a tie for third and Tom Hoge sitting in fifth at 11-under. Tiger Woods, who was chasing win number 83, would finish at nine-under in a tie for ninth place. This would-be Leishman’s fifth Tour title. Next up is the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale Jan. 30 – Feb. 2.

World loses sports legend and daughter in helicopter crash: sports world mourns By JACOB CLEMONS Staff Writer

On Jan. 26, 2020 at roughly 10.a.m PST in Calabasas, California, Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, were killed along with seven others in a helicopter crash. The helicopter was privately owned by Bryant and was a Sikorsky S-76 model flown by pilot Ara Zobayan . The reason for the crash is unknown, however, many suspect weather conditions (heavy fog) and engine trouble to be the cause of the accident. Bryant was a perennial allstar in the NBA during his 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was an 18-time All Star, 2-time Scoring Champ, 5-time NBA Champion, 15time All-NBA, 12-time All Defensive team, 2-time Finals MVP, 4-time All Star Game MVP and a League wide MVP in 2007-08. He was also the first player in NBA history to have

two different numbers retired by the same team. Kobe (Bean) Bryant is an NBA legend and his legacy will not be forgotten. His daughter, Gianna, a.k.a Gigi Bryant, was also aboard the helicopter when it crashed. She was 13 years old. She loved the game of basketball and was pursuing a career in the WNBA. Gianna and Kobe had been seen together at an NBA game a few weeks prior, with Kobe stating that she believed she would carry on his legacy. Her love for the game and potential in the world will be greatly missed. Also aboard the helicopter, was John Altobelli, a baseball coach at Orange Coast College. He worked for 27 seasons and was named National Coach of the Year in 2019 by the American Baseball Coaches Association. His wife Keri Altobelli, their daughter Alyssa and girls’ basketball coach Chris-

tina Mauser were also on the helicopter. The party of nine were said to have been heading to Mamba Academy, a basketball facility in which Kobe Bryant founded, for the second day of a youth tournament. The two girls were scheduled to play in an eighth-grade game. Those aboard also had impactful lives on their families and others around them. They will be greatly missed. The accident has left Bryant fans in shock, his life impacted millions and his mentality as a competitor has driven aspiring athletes and professionals to live to his standard. His legacy will continue to live on and be carried by his family. Bryant is survived by three daughters and his wife, Vanessa Bryant. Our prayers and condolences are sent out to the Bryant family and all the families involved in this tragic accident.

Tree hugger: Acrobatics and Tumbling edition By CODI BARNETT

Staff Writer Arbor Day is not for a few months, but I would like to talk about trees and introduce some very interesting facts. Did you know trees are symbols of luck? Have you ever wondered why we knock on wood? That tradition comes from pagans who tapped on tree trunks to summon the good spirits living inside. Trees can also provide mental and physical health benefits. Exposure to trees and nature help reduce mental fatigue, blood pressure and muscle tension. Also, did you know neighborhoods with more trees experience less crime? Earth has more than 60,000 known species of trees. More than half of those trees are

Part of a prehistoric plant family thought to be ancestors of ferns, it stood 26 feet tall and formed the first known forests. It may have lacked leaves, and instead grew frond-like branches with “branchlets” resembling a bottlebrush. It wasn’t closely related to tree ferns, but did share their method of reproducing by spores, not seeds (arborday. org). Highlighting the life of Kobe Bryant

By CHARITY STOLTZ

Staff Writer Kobe Bryant was a legendary basketball player that many looked up to for years as they followed him in his growing fame throughout his career playing for the Lakers. His life was brought to an abrupt end on Sunday, Jan. 26, along with his daughter and seven other passengers who were in a helicopter crash. Some are blaming weather conditions, while others look to technical malfunctions for the tragedy. Many more are mourning their beloved basketball hero and those whose lives were also taken that day. Not long after news of the accident broke, social media was overflowing with sentimental posts from fans, including stories of how Kobe

Bryant impacted their life and some of his famous quotes that have encouraged basketball players and viewers alike. Amongst these, student Adam Betz, shared his own personal story about Kobe’s impact on his life: “Growing up watching Kobe Bryant play basketball the way he did was an absolute treat. He handled his craft with unparalleled dedication and professionalism. He will be best remembered for how influential he was on the hardwood, but his love for his family and intelligence should be remembered fondly as well. He will forever serve as a great example for anyone who needs to get something done. The stories of his early morning workouts are legendary. He was able to be a sparkling example for a whole genera-

tion of young men and women with regards to intentionality and dedication.” For so many people, Kobe was a shining example of hard work and perseverance. There is truth in his statement, “Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses.” Having been part of five NBA championship wins, receiving one NBA MVP title and third place ranking on the NBA’s all-time scoring list as well as many other highly coveted achievements, there is no doubt that these great things were a product of his early morning workouts and dedication to the game. On the court, Kobe Bryant was known for his spectacular athleticism, but off the court, he was known for his dedication to his wife and daughters

Kenobi series on hold until next year By TYLER EVANS Staff Writer Fans are shocked to hear that the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series, to be released on the Disney+ streaming platform, is said to be on hold for now. This news arrived after reports that Lucasfilm president and Obi-Wan producer, Kathleen Kennedy, was not happy with the current scripts that are out currently. IGN has stated that “As reported by Collider, the show hasn’t been cancelled, but the crew that had assembled at Pinewood Studios in London was sent home and were told that the Obi-Wan show would be down “indefinitely.” Another source has claimed that the current Kenobi story was too similar to the popular Disney+ original “The Mandalorian,” as Obi-Wan helping to guide a young Luke or Leia would too closely resemble the story of the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda aka “The Child.” THR reports that the script has been rewritten twice, since the “story became

In 2009, Pearl Jam put out “Backspacer” which is, by far, one of their best albums in existence. Then they went silent for a while, until 2013 when “Lightning Bolt” is produced, gracing ears once again with the same familiar guttural singing that eases the mind and makes you play air guitar more than you could’ve imagined. After the success of “Lightning Bolt,” they once again went radio silent. Then, these last couple of months, Pearl Jam has done three major things. The first was that the group announced a major tour, with stops all over North America and more dates to be

announced later. They also announced their new album, “Gigaton,” which is set to release on March 27 of this year. Lastly, as of Wednesday Jan. 22, Pearl Jam released one of the highly anticipated tracks from “Gigaton” titled “Dance of the Clairvoyants.” It was a surprise release, and waking up at 6:30am to shower and getting to listen to this new song made the day much better. “Gigaton” and “Dance of the Clairvoyants” are being called new evolutions in Pearl Jam’s sound, with critics stating that the new music is relying heavily on electronic mixing and

Pearl Jam set to release new music

By ASHLYN REED Staff Writer When I say 90s Grunge Music, you probably begin to think of the opening riff of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or maybe the entire chorus of “When I Come Around,” but what I think of is the sound of Eddie Vedder singing and the rest of Pearl Jam playing with him. On an unrelated note, I also think of the mix CDs my mom used to play in our stereo at night to get my brother and I to go to sleep which included Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Green Day, The Foo Fighters and all the others I listen to everyday. But fast forward quite a few years.

sounds rather than the grunge vocals and band that Pearl Jam fans are used to hearing. With the other 11 titles listed, but not yet released, March 27 looks a lot further away than I would like to believe. For now, I guess I can listen to “Ten,” “Vitalogy” and “Backspacer” to hold me over until then, but anticipation (my own, my mother’s, Pearl Jam fans and critics alike) for “Gigaton” will continue to steep until we get the first new music in almost a decade. Not only will this mark a new amazing tour, but also spark more fans of some of the best music in existence.

ArtsEntertainment WALK THE MOON transforms “Someone Like You”

Issue 2

By TREY SMALLWOOD Staff Writer Some people may say that WALK THE MOON is a one hit wonder; their hit song “Shut up and Dance” took the pop music scene by storm in 2014. It seemed like every few minutes “Shut up and Dance” was on the radio or someone was playing it. While that is their most famous song, they have plenty of other songs that are great and catchy. One of my favorites, “Anna Sun,” is, what I think to be one of the most underappreciated songs by a pop band. However great WALK THE MOON is, this series is about covers, not just underappreciated songs. Their cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You” falls into both categories. The cover was first performed by the band while backstage at Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show.” WALK THE

Petricca continues singing with the rest of his band backing him up. However, at the start of the second verse, he allows Kevin Colter Ray to take the lead with the vocals. Ray takes a similar approach with his verse as Petricca did with his. The cover takes a soulful Adele song and turns it into a wonderful folkpop ballad that would rival any band (looking at you, Mumford and Sons). Learning English can be challenging By KATIE SWANSON

Staff Writer Being bilingual is very useful in our modern world. Learning a new language always has its roadblocks, but a lot of times you can find words that are similar in both languages and start from there. The English language has been proven to be one of the hardest languages to learn if it is not your first language. The difficulty can be different for people depending on their native language. English is made up of Germanic, French and Latin origins; therefore, having one of these languages as your first can make it easier. This still does not account

for all of the linguistics that go into the language. Inconsistencies in spelling and pronounciation can lead to many mistakes. The “ough” spelling is pronounced differently in many words. For example, “dough, tough and cough” all contain the same spelling pattern, but are all pronounced differently. There are also words that are spelled the same but mean different things. For example, the statement, “Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.” The first tear means that there is a rip in the painting, while the last tear refers to someone crying. If you did not know the difference before reading this sentence, it would

not make sense. In addition to this, the sentence, “Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present,” uses present three times and each time it means something different. There are also issues with using the correct spelling in the correct way. Their, there and they’re all mean different things and if used in the wrong instance, it will make the sentence incoherent. People who have spoken English their whole lives still do not know how to use it sometimes. “Their” refers to possession. “There” indicates where something is a place/position. “They’re” means “they are.”

This issue is also seen when using where, were and we’re. “Where” is used to talk about a location and also when asking a question. “Were” is used when talking in the past tense. For example, “the children were good yesterday.” Lastly, “we’re” means “we are” and is used when talking about something that we are doing. If someone was learning the English language and said these words, they may not understand the difference between the three because they all sound the same when they are said. In addition, some words are spelled differently when talking about them as individuals or having them in

the plural form. For example, when dealing with more than one goose you do not just add an “s,” the correct spelling is geese. This is the same with a tooth. Multiple would be called teeth. This change is only used in certain circumstances. Most words you only add an “s or es” to the end to make it plural; however, some spellings are different. These few examples are only the beginning. There are many changes in the English language because we are always evolving to the things around us. However, because of these instances, it makes the English language very difficult to learn.

heard “biscuits and gravy” for “brisket and gravy.” The host, Alton Brown, noticed that this was not the man’s fault, and judged his dish as “brisket and gravy” rather than “biscuits and gravy.” Then in later rounds he went into more detail as to which dish the contestants were to cook. Not only did the man make it to the next round, but the inclusivity that was immediately noticed and fixed made the show better, easier to watch and made me want to watch more. “Chopped” is where it’s at. This show has a panel of judges that constantly circulates between a group of very talented and highly skilled chefs from an assortment of backgrounds.

“Chopped” takes random ingredients and throws them into baskets with the hope that the chefs will know how to make something out of them. (I follow a similar practice with things in my dorm pantry.) Alton is a nice host, though he can be goofy and intimidating. Ted, on the other hand, is well-rounded, nicer to contestants and has a far better stage presence than Alton. Ted is also the original Antoni Porowski, as in he was the first chef to graze the “Queer Eye” kitchens. He was the one to make stoic men cook and express themselves with food. What did Alton do during that time? He made the show “Good Eats,” and it is another fan favorite.

I will continue to watch both, but, in all reality only “Chopped” keeps me on the edge of my seat. I attribute some of the suspense created in the show to Ted, as he gen-

uinely keeps the momentum of the show going, especially when he announces the time left on the clock. In my opinion, Ted Allen is the better host of the two.

Brown and Allen battle for The Food Network By ASHLYN REED

Staff Writer I watch a lot of The Food Network, and two of my favorite shows are “Chopped” and “Cutthroat Kitchen.” While both shows can be debated until the cows come home as to which one is more challenging and which one is better, ultimately there is a major point that the argument boils down to. Which show has the better host? Ted Allen is the better host of the two, and this I will defend until I die. “Cutthroat Kitchen” is new, it’s hip, it’s modern and, yes, it is a good show. One of the most defining moments of this show was when a foreign contestant who didn’t speak English as his primary language had mis-

Good characters to use in Super Smash Brothers By TYLER EVANS Staff Writer If you’re looking for creative ways lose hours upon hours or procrastinate on your homework, look no further. Nintendo’s hit videogame series, “Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate,” is one of their most profitable titles in terms of active players and popularity. Its popularity comes partly from the success of the Nintendo Switch, which allows up to eight players at once, making the game great for parties. If you’re interested, use this article to get a leg up on the competition by choosing the best characters in the game. In the game, characters range from Mario to Sonic and Ryu from Street Fighter, to the Wii Fit Trainer. Almost all seasoned players have a preferred fighting style and character combination. Personally, I have different fighting styles for my favorite characters, but I can’t tell you what they are... There are five main characters that I love to use. They can be used by anyone, from the beginning player to the expert. Their versatility also means they can be used against any opponents, regardless of their type and the attacks that they use. My go-to character that I use is Kirby. Everyone knows or at least has heard of this iconic pink blob, Kirby. Kirby has had an extensive history at Nintendo and he is, for lack

of better words, the main character in the campaign of Super Smash Bros. There are many reasons why he is an excellent character for beginners and those new to the Smash community. Kirby’s unique ability to copy any player that he eats, allows the user to test the waters with any character they can find. Moreover, Kirby is also a great offensive player, with his quick punches and his hammer that appears out of nowhere to deliver a near fatal blow to his opponents. Kirby is an excellent choice for both beginning players and experts alike The next character I use is Bowser, the classic antagonist who always kidnaps Princess Peach and takes her back to his castle. Bowser is more or less a basic “tank” character – a great pick for those who are wanting to play as a powerful character instead of a agile and quick player. Bowser has pretty basic moves that everyone is capable of learning, with his flame breath, grab and slam, and his dead drop being the popular and the most effective. The only downside to playing Bowser is that you lose speed and any agility that you get from most other characters; however, this can be offset by the gained strength and power depending on your preferred fighting style. Another character I tend to use is Captain Falcon, for those who like to play as “fighter” characters. Captain Falcon is

a stable and agile character, who is also great for beginners. He has easy to learn moves that are extremely powerful such as “Falcon Punch” and “Falcon Kick,” not to mention he jumps extremely high to evade enemy attacks. Young Link is also another amazing charater to use in the game. His spin attack move makes him very strong against opponents. Young Link is also very fast, but not to the same level as Kirby. His bombs are also extremely useful in battling stronger opponents. Finally, my favorite Smash character is Meta Knight. He is a powerful weapon fighter. With his sword and his abilities mixed together, he is a force to be reckoned with. He is incredibly quick as well and mimics Kirby in a lot of ways so that makes him easy to learn and keeps him running. All and all, Kirby is still my favorite character to use if I want to win. While he isn’t as cool as Meta Knight, his offensive power combined with his speed make him unmatched in the world of Super Smash Brothers. While the other characters have their advantages, Kirby is still the best of all of these characters. Even though he is pink and silly looking, don’t be mistaken because he can do damage in the areana. However, if your friends chose to be him, you can always mix it up with another one of these other great choices!

Thoughts from Places: The Library By CARRIE JO CECIL Back Page Editor This semester’s Back Page theme is “Thoughts from Places.” Each article is inspired by a specific location or period of time connected to Georgetown College. My first love at Georgetown College was the library. It plays no part in my first memory of Georgetown— years before my first official visits, I sat in the car on a rainy day while my dad visited a friend of his. I have no clear impression of the college from that day, but I do remember cresting the hill that precedes Main Street, and looking up from my book just in time to see all the hanging baskets of flowers outside the picturesque store fronts. I distinctly remember exclaiming in delight. And then I forgot about Georgetown for a few years, until my college search intensified. I visited the campus again, paying attention this time. It was sunny and warm that day, and a friend of mine from high school was kindly giving me an unofficial tour. I’m sure I stood on the sidewalk between the Caf and the chapel and looked down toward the library. If I did, it doesn’t stick out in my mind from my remembrance of that day. Then, of course, the library and I got off on the wrong foot. If you visited Georgetown on a Preview Day or for an interview, you probably began your day in the library lobby, milling about around the fruit trays and trying not to look nervous. According to one of my friends who remembers seeing me on one of those days, I failed at the “not looking nervous” part. My earliest memories of the library are drenched in the nervousness and sweat that accompanies nice clothes. On of one those miserable days, I left the chapel in a daze of hope about coming here, fear about if I could, and confusion about what exactly being at college entailed. I looked up from the damp concrete and I saw the library in all its glory. The Anna Ashcraft Ensor

If you look around, the whole some more time walking through the campus is littered with names. From shelves. cared about this place. The Ensor LRC may not have been here when they were, but I like to imagine that they too had that one place on campus that made them smile a little extra when they saw it in the right light. Maybe it wasn’t a place that brightened their day but a person like their favorite professor or best friend. They could have treasured a special event like Chapel Day or a football game. Everyone who has spent any time at all at Georgetown College comes to have a certain fondness for the days that pass here, regardless if they spent most of it in their dorm room or at one of the long tables of the Caf. There’s something about this place that invites you to make memories and carry them with you. Some people cherish those memories so much they want to leave something behind, like a name on a plaque on a library shelf. On the shelf that bears the names Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel T. Armstrong, there’s a book of fragments of Greek poetry that I found while procrastinating on a final paper my first semester. The poems are full of gaps and unfinished thoughts because of what has been lost to time. The most haunting fragment belongs to Sappho: “I say someone in another time will remember us.” Memory’s a funny thing in its lapses and distortions, and time only increases the wear and warp. Who and what lives on seems to be up to chance. The only advice I have is to make plenty of memories and leave your name around as much as possible. Hold your favorite image in your head, like the library in the sun. Introduce yourself to strangers, even ones you may never see again. The more memories you make, the more likely some will survive in you or in another person and the more assuredly you can say, in another time, someone will remember this.
