Abstract The research is described on the bases of making cakes in which a hand held mixer (egg beater electric device) plays an important role. The device has lots of problems regarding to the ergonomic of the device in current market and highlights the aesthetic inconvenience of the device.

Many problems had come across through the research that people liked to make it easy while whisking egg yolks and while removing blades. The core reason of making the choice of this topic is that women who takes pain in their kitchens.

By exploring into the case it helped to utilise the primary and secondary study, function and usability of the product, its specification; the assembly problems during the servicing of the product which lead to analyses of the problems faced and thus lead to develop QFD & PDS. The learning gave a broad idea of creating the ideation sketches and selecting the 3 concepts, developing the 3D concepts in Alias and making of the prototype of the final design.

CHAPTER 1 1. Introduction: A mixer is a kitchen appliance intended for mixing, folding, beating and whipping food ingredients. Mixers come in two major variations, hand mixers and stand mixers.

A hand mixer is known as hand – held mixing device. The modern electrically powered type consists of a handle mounted over a large enclosure containing the motor, which drives one or two beaters. The beaters are engrossed in the food to be mixed. A mixer is a much slower device without sharpened blades.

A whisk is a cooking utensil used in food preparation to blend ingredients smooth, or to incorporate air into a mixture, in a process known as whisking or whipping. Most whisks consist of a long, narrow handle with a series of wire loops joined at the end. The wires are usually metal, but some are plastic for use with a non-stick cookware. Whisks are also made from bamboo.

Whisks are commonly used to whip egg whites into firm foam to make meringue, or to whip cream into whipped cream.

Second by data analysis with the help of the survey and analysis of the customer lead to QFD & PDS. Third it then leads to concept generation by problem solving methods, concept sketching and rendering.

Fourth is the final concept selection by cross checking the concepts and then with user selection.

Fifth is the Alias model and prototype.

Sixth is the poster of the product.

3. History An African American, Willis Johnson of Cincinnati, patented an improved mechanical egg beater (U.S. patent no 292,821) on February 5, 1884. In fact, Willis Johnson really invented was an early mixing machine and not just an egg beater. Willis Johnson’s device was not intended for eggs alone. The invention of the object is to provide a machine that mixes eggs, batter, and other similar ingredients that are used in bakery.

In 1870, Turner Williams invented the first hand egg beater (U.S Patent 103811). The first electric standing mixer for domicile purpose was invented by Herbert Johnson in 1908 and sold by the Kitchen Aid division of the Hobart Manufacturing Company.

1919 : Hobart, called Kitchen Aid sells a “Food Preparer” (stand mixer) for home.

1930 : Sunbeam Mix Master introduced selling at a fraction of the Kitchen Aid’s price.

1936 : Designer Egmont Ahrens altered Kitchen Aid mixer down to a more suitable weight.

1952 : Sunbeam put out its first hand – held Mix Master.

1954 : Kitchen Aid mixer is launched in a colour other than white.

4. Product Study: Product study or product analysis is the examination of product parts, which allows understanding the importance of material, processing, economic and aesthetics decisions to be preferred and also to enhance the features of the existing product or to develop a new product.

 Exhaust Fan The exhaust fan is used to drain out the heat produced by the motor to increase the life of the product. The fan is rotated by the threaded shaft which is connected to the motor. It is attached to the motor itself and thus, the consumption of space and power is less. This position of the fan exhausts the heat out and not towards the user.

 Blades These Blades do not have sharp edges as they are used for mixing dough and for whisking. The gear attachment allows the rotation of the blades. A dent is provided on to the arm of the blades for locking into the gear system. The material used for the blades is stainless steel. Its main function is to mix the food ingredients in fine and smooth foam.

One of the most difficulties faced by customers using this product is washing the blades due to its complex shape.

ď ś Body The body is the casing of the product that holds the motor, speed control switch, ejector pin and the connection of the wire and chord, which has a firm covering and resistant to current. The body has two parts upper case and lower case. The body can be of different shapes varying to the different Brands. The upper body contains the handle for holding purpose and the lower case has ventilation provided for releasing the heat produced by the motor which is exhausted by the fan. The main defect of the body is its size which is unnecessary according to the size of the motor. The body shows the exterior appearance of the product that signifies its magnificence.

 Speed Control Switch: The speed control switch is used to increase the speed of the device as per usage and also to switch off after utilising it. This has 6 terminals that allow 5 speeds and including switching off the device, and these terminals are connected separately to the motor of the device.

 Motor The Motor is of two main types DC or Direct Current and AC or Alternating Current motors. The electric device helps to convert electric energy to mechanical energy. Both AC and DC motors work on the same principle of armature winding and magnetic field; in DC motors the armature rotates while the magnetic field remains stationary, whereas in AC motors is converse to the former. DC motors is used in Hand mixers due to the following reasons: –  Works on direct current.  They generate continuous and standard current flow.  DC motors are single face motors.  The device is self starting.

 These motors work in a situation where the speed needs to be controlled.

The motor is the heart of the device which allows the functioning of the Mixer. It transfers the movement from the armature in which a threaded shaft is connected and allows the gear system to revolve which is then transferred to the Blades to rotate.

 Blade Ejector Pin The ejector assembly has an ejector pin, spring and washer. The blade ejector assembly is used to remove the blade. The spring is used to retrieve the pin to its original position and the washer is to avoid jamming of spring.

ď ś Gear Attachment The gear attachment or gear system acts as a middle functioning system that transfers the motion of the threaded shaft from the motor to the blade for the rotary action. The gear attachment has a locking system for holding the blades in the bottom. The Blade ejector pin is assembled on the gear where a provision is provided to allow the pin to knock out the blades {above Figure10}.

5. Mechanism Flow Chart

Figure 12: Mechanism Flow Chart The flow chart above describes the function of the hand mixer. The chord helps to pass the electric current from the motor to the speed control switch which transfers the voltage to the DC motor. The motor starts rotating, which allows the exhaust fan to rotate and releases the heat, simultaneously the threaded shaft will function the gear attachment. As the blade is held at the bottom of the gear attachment, it allows the blades to rotate and henceforth, whisking is done.

12.Ergonomics Study Ergonomics is a science concerned with the ‘fit’ between people and their work. It puts people first taking account of their capabilities and limitations. Ergonomics aims to make sure that tasks, equipment, information and environment suit each worker.

To assess the fit between a person and their work, ergonomists have to consider many aspects. This includes:  The job being done and the demands on the worker  The equipment used (its size, shape, and how suitable it is for the task)  The information used  The physical environment  The social environment Ergonomists have to consider all physical aspects of a person, such as:  Body, size and shape  Fitness and strength  Posture  The senses, especially vision, hearing and touch  The stresses and strains on muscles, joints, nerves Ergonomists have to consider the psychological of a person, such as:  Mental abilities  Personality  Knowledge  Experience By assessing these aspects of people, their jobs, equipment and working environment and the interaction between them, ergonomists are able to design safe, effective and productive work systems.  Weight Problems The body of the device acquires a lot of space when compared to the size of the motor, thus a modified shape for the product can bring a change to this defect. Due to this problem, users attain wrist pain.

 Handling and Usage Problems Another problem faced by most of the users is holding the device without any grip in the right position. There is no right position to hold this device while using it, and apart from this it also creates a lot of noise by the blade and this may also result in scratches on the vessel.

 Switch, Chord and Ejection Pin Problems The electric chord, switch and ejector pin is not placed in the right position. Increasing the speed of the device by moving the switch sideways or forward and backward directions with thumb is difficult; similarly, it’s the same with ejecting the blades. The placing of the chord (not plug point) behind the palm is a disturbance.

 Chord Winding Problem The device does not have a separate winding system for the chord, it takes time for winding and due to its weight it brings pain to the user’s wrist.

16.PDS- Product Design Specification PDS is a statement which specifies the product features before it is developed completely. Its aim is to ensure that the subsequent design and development of a product meets the needs of the user.

The PDS is a specification of what is required and it also describes the technical specification of the actual product in which the product has to been designed. This is an important stage as it illustrates the product by creating a PDS and also helps in developing different alternatives.

This stage concludes with the following questions; “What does the product do?” and “how will the product do it?”

PDS for the concept generation  Performance The product has to work in an easy manner and must have a proper grip and should eliminate the ergonomic issues. The wire winding process after the use needs to be better. The product should be affordable and be compact to reduce the space consumption.  Maintenance Maintenance is easy and has a clip in the middle of the product to open the body. The product must have fewer screws for clamping the motor. The maintenance is usually done for the motor, battery and ejecting system of the blade.  Competition The current competing brands for hand mixers are Philips, Kenwood, Braun, Kitchen Aid, etc.  Size The product should not be too big and should not occupy more space. It should be handy.  Weight The weight of the device should be less to avoid unnecessary health issues like wrist pain etc Product Design & Development

 Aesthetics, appearance and finish The product needs to improve its aesthetics, to give a better appearance and a fine look. The colour should be in pleasant shades like white, light green etc and this could be one of the main features why a product is rated visually.  Materials The body material used is Die Casting Al with plastic coating on the body. The blade has a rubber strap that is attached to the blade instead of the ribs for quick mixing and easy to wash.  Environment The environment that is provided for the mixer is kitchen, and thus space allotted would be less.  Customer The customers prefer to have the following qualities 1) a different shape for the product, 2) Avoid damaging the vessel; 3) Winding of wire is a problem, and 4) the weight of the product.  Ergonomics The ergonomic study has to be considered while designing, to maintain the health of the customers. The restructured product’s design should be efficient to recover from all its ergonomic issues.  Processes The process that involves for manufacturing the product are moulding, forming, and stamping operations to derive the end product.

17. Boards The boards expresses the emotions of the people that they do during their daily routine or the words that relates their emotions, considering their likes and dislikes of what they intend to do or put into picture. It simplifies that the board is full of emotions that they like to create that has to be related with the product to be designed.

The image boards that are considered for the design of the product are as follows:  Mood board,  Theme board and  Lifestyle board.

 Mood board A mood board is a type of poster design that may consists of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition of the choice of the mood board creator. Mood boards are not limited to visual subjects, but serve as a visual tool to quickly inform others of the overall feel or flow that a designer is trying to achieve.

ďƒź Theme Board A theme board is like a collage, which has inspiration. Inspiration could come from anywhere, whether it is the internet, or on holiday, or just at home. On theme boards there are sometimes thoughts and feelings. These boards can contain anything like something that is special to someone, drawings, photos, jewellery absolutely anything that is inspiring.

 Lifestyle Board The lifestyle board shows the image representing the target customers or the lifestyles of the target customers. The images should indicate the target customer’s personal and social values and cultural trends. The lifestyle board will be ‘idealistic’ in its portrayal of customers and helps to explore the full range of target customers.

19. Ideations Ideation means to form an idea or imagine. Ideation is the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas, where an idea is understood as a basic element of thought that can be visual, concrete, or abstract. Ideation is all stages of a thought cycle, from innovation, to development, to actualisation. As such, it is an essential part of the design process, both in education and practice.

20.Concept generation 20.1 Concept 1 The first concept is generated from a shape of a snail. It has innovative style and features; it has a special wire winding system with a button at the side, covered with rubber pad for better grip at the tail of the object. It has a separate ejecting button for removing the blades.

The blade shown in the Fig. 26 is used for scrambling egg. The accessories of this device can be changed as per the requirement. There is proper grip is provided for the concept. Its speed is controlled at the side of the device with the help of a switch, by pressing it. The blade can revolve clockwise and anti – clockwise by pressing the either of the side buttons. It requires two hands for holding the object. The object has 5 speeds and the speed is controlled by pressing the button repeatedly.

20.2 Concept 2 The metaphor of the second concept resembles a parrot. The body has a slim outfit with a comfortable handle. This has a wire winding system and the blade is innovated by replacing the ribs of the blade with rubber strap, thus it’s easy to wash and reduces the time for whisking. The ejection of the blade functions, similar to a reloading of shot gun when the bullet is shot. The speed can be controlled up to 3. It requires two hands for holding the device.

20.3 Concept 3 The third concept is inspired by a lady’s leg on high heeled. This reformed device runs on a battery which can be recharged by using an adaptor. The product has a slim body which has a firm holding position and the frame of the product solves the ergonomic issues – holding the device in the right position. The ejection of the blade and accessories available is similar to the second concept. It can be hanged on the wall, henceforth; it does not require space at all.

The latest mini motor is used for rotating the blade.

22.Concept Selection (Pugh’s Method) Stuart Pugh invented the decision – matrix method, also called Pugh method. Pugh concept selection is a quantitative technique used to rank the multi – dimensional options of an option set. It is frequently used in engineering, for making design decision but also used to rank investment options, vendor options, product options or any other set of multi – dimensional entities.

The advantage of this approach to decision making is that, subjective opinions about one alternative versus another can be made more objective. Another advantage of this method is that sensitivity studies can be performed.
