“America is not like a blanket--one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size. America is more like a quilt--many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread.”

- Jesse Jackson 1984 This quote can be found in the immensely popular and newly opened “A Lexicon of Fashion” art exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of art.

The exhibit opened shortly after the 2021 Met Gala in September, and is meant to represent American fashion by encompassing its variety and vocabulary through 12 different sections, and over 100 different garments. As the Jackson quote mentions, the exhibit is inspired by a quilt, emphasizing American fashion as vast, interconnected, and unique. Each garment is characterized by a single word and defined, highlighting each piece as its own patch in the American blanket. The Garments in the exhibit vary in time and style including Andre Walker’s Pendleton Woolen Mills garment manufactured in 1863 to Rihanna’s 2020 Savage X Fenty lingerie ensemble, emphasizing not only American fashion of today but also of the past. Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, is the creator of the exhibit, and emphasizes the way this represents America.

Bolton mentioned that 40% of the designers are people of color, highlighting the variety of backgrounds, styles, and perspectives that can be found. Each garment is sectioned off in its own box making each design its own piece to be understood. The second part of the exhibit will be opening in May 2022 and will be titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” Overall, this is an amazing place to attend if you find yourself visiting New York City and are looking for a fashionoriented activity to do. The exhibit is thought provoking, but also a great place if you are looking to garner inspiration.

men enter the hip-hop/rap sector of the music industry, they tend to be portrayed as predominantly masculine, through their music as well as their fashion statements. But Tyler has gone a different route, claiming that through his Golf Wang line, he’s created products that he likes, however “niche” they may be.

Many argue that through his collaborations, Tyler has disrupted the streetwear industry for the better. Lacoste collaborated with Golf le Fleur, a

When people think of Tyler the Creator, they often think of his music. However, Tyler’s love of fashion and self-expression has not only led to the creation of his own clothing line, Golf Wang, but has sparked a new idea of what it means to be a hip-hop/rap artist. Whether it is through his use of bright colors, floral patterns, or excessive accessories, Tyler has been unapologetically himself, and through this, has become a role model for teens growing up just as he did.

with both Vans and Converse, featuring bright colors and patterns, as well as Golf Wang's own collaborationwith the “Save the Bees” campaign. These unisex lines have only added to the trend of androgynous clothing, however, Tyler’s collaborations and Golf Wang line are not the only thing he is doing in terms of fashion. His music videos and stage-looks speak volumes. In Tyler’s groundbreaking album, IGOR, he can be seen in a bright blue suit, a blonde wig, and chunky black shades, a tribute to the infamous Andy Warhol. His newest album, Call Me If You Get Lost, shows Tyler’s change in focus from bright colors to pastels, while highlighting his love for Louis Vuitton vintage trunks, blue nail polish, and chunky jeweled necklaces.

Needless to say, Tyler is constantly innovating his own look, and in turn, creating a revolution in what the streetwear-loving youth wears today. By opening the door to wearing what you want in a formerly masculine industry, Tyler has given inspiration to his fans to be who they are, unapologetically.

Fashion is always trying to reinvent itself.

“Psychadelic Patterns” by Giovanna Lino

During the pandemic, various fashion trends were revived. One in particular was psychedelic patterns.

Inspired by the 70s, this type of print was first popularized by counterculture teenagers in the midst of social and political turmoil. The ‘LSD fabric’ made of colorful lines refers to a ‘hallucinogenic’’ pattern that became the inspiration for other psychedelic shapes, and made it possible for the pattern to be produced quickly and appear as a ‘groovy’ style in movies. These patterns are known for their bold colors, sinuous lines and natural shapes.

In 2021, with the use of social media, this style is back in action. Tie dye is one of the most popular psychedelic patterns that has been revived. According to the trend-forecasting company Heuritech, during this Winter season, tie dye trends are expected to increase more than 6% when compared to previous seasons. High end brands, along with local boutiques, have embraced this sense of nostalgia and have created collections based on this style. Brands such as Tom Ford, Collina Strada, Lecavalier, and Raf Simons have embraced the tie dye and other psychedelic prints in their Spring/Summer 2021 collections.

Raf Simons used colorblocked and defined swirls. The collection was named ‘Teenage Dreams’ inspired by the 1979 film Hair, which resembles the feeling of uncertainty and change that people are living nowadays. The pandemic has had a major impact on the return of the psychedelic. Dennis Nothdruft, head of exhibitions in the Fashion & Textile Museum in London, said that there is a feeling of civil unrest and change that correlates with the use of different prints. There is nothing more ‘youth revolt’ than what occurred in the 70s and the current moment we are facing. With the return of these prints, there is an evocation for community and participation, providing sensory experiences to the fashion community.

One fashion commentator said that during the pandemic, people got used to looking at social media all the time. For a brand to stand out, it requires a creative collection, and nifty patterns are a way to achieve that. Ideally, a user would stop scrolling and wonder more about the brand when coming across a stylish psychedelic pattern dress. Psychedelic patterns are here to bring back that sense of revolt and freedom that people need in 2021, a freedom that is colorful and bold.

So you want a designer bag? It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the endless options of fabulous designer purses. Not only that, but purchasing a designer bag is an investment and one that you want to be sure you will love year after year before you make the commitment. If you find yourself struggling, purchasing a vintage bag may be a great alternative for you. Not only are vintage bags more affordable, they are guaranteed timeless, and something that you know will stay in your wardrobe despite ongoing trends. Vintage purses are also more unique, and are great collector pieces for the future. Listed below are some great options to start with on your journey into vintage!

CHANEL precision This purse had its big moment in 2020. The Chanel precision bag was never actually sold in stores, but was instead a free “gift with purchase” for Chanel VIP members in the early 2000’s. This purse has become exceptionally popular due to its fuzzy material, as well as its relatively affordable price tag. The purse comes in three colors: pink, brown, and black and is a great bag to wear with

FENDI baguette This is another classic option that can go with numerous looks. The vintage fendi baguette is a favorite of mine because they come in a wide-range of colors, patterns and styles. If you are looking for a statement purse, I would start with the baguette and start browsing the range of fun and quirky styles. However, if you are into a more traditional monogram style, this bag comes in that as well.

LOUIS VUITTON x

takashi murakami All of the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami bags are super cool statement bags to add to your collection. These are great if you are into colorful and fun statement pieces.

Because of the rarity of these bags, they are often on the pricier side, but if you can snag one I definitely recommend the investment!

DIOR saddle This may be one of the most iconic vintage purses to date. The Dior saddle bag is a must-have collector piece, and one that will stand the test of time. Dior saddle bags have become increasingly popular since Dior released a re-edition of the purse in 2018. The Saddle bag is a great unique piece and its shape is different from any other on the market.

Vintage saddle bags can be found in a wide range of colors, including navy blue, pink, red, green, and black.

PRADA nylon hobo Prada hobo bags are another classic yet fun vintage purse. This is another purse that has been re-made by the brand today. Nylon Prada purses in general are one of the more common vintage purses on the market, so finding one for a good price is definitely attainable! Many vintage Prada purses work as great shoulder bags, and are a great every day bag to add to your collection.

GUCCI jackie This is another classic option that can go with numerous looks. The vintage fendi baguette is a favorite of mine because they come in a wide-range of colors, patterns and styles. If you are looking for a statement purse, I would start with the baguette and start browsing the range of fun and quirky styles. However, if you are into a more traditional monogram style, this bag comes in that as well. aThe vintage “Jackie” bag has recently gained popularity since Gucci has re-released the style. This is such a great option if you are looking for a professional bag that can be carried from day-to-night.

The vintage monogram option is a personal favorite as it adds such a cool vintage look to your outfit.
