This November we will ‘Remember’ all those that have died for their country in times of conflict and we continue to think of the many active service personnel who work so tirelessly to protect us, particularly the many thousands based at military bases throughout Gloucestershire and Herefordshire and the security services fighting the war on terror, especially those at GCHQ in Cheltenham.

This month we have met with former RAF Officer Heather Anderson, who served with the Royal Air Force Nursing Service on the frontline in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She spoke with Live 24 Seven how the experiences she witnessed led to her being diagnosed with PTSD but with help from military charity PTSD Resolution, she has conquered her traumas and is now able to enjoy a normal and fruitful life again.

Heather Anderson is a heroic former RAF Officer, who served with the Royal Air Force Nursing Service on the frontline in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She spoke with Live 24 Seven how the

experiences she witnessed led to her being diagnosed with PTSD. Born in Malta in 1962, Heather Anderson was the daughter of a submariner who spent much of his time at sea. Like all forces families,the Andersons moved around frequently and Heather and her brother both attended boarding school. But, when school closed for the summer, Heather, her mother and brother, packed up and headed to the idyllic village of Corse Lawn, just north of Gloucester, to spend the holidays with her great aunt and uncle who owned a farm called Little Dunshill.

Heather’s great-uncle, John Nind, was well-known in the area and Heather has many fond memories of her summers with him and his wife. Probably her fondest is of lying under a blanket with her brother while the cows licked her feet!

As an adult, Heather had no immediate plans to join the armed forces. Instead, she trained as a midwife in London and spent some time backpacking around Australia. It was during these travels that she met her husband and decided to settle in Australia permanently. While out there, Heather continued her studies, gaining additional qualifications in emergency nursing care and aviation medicine. At that time, Heather had no idea just how important these qualifications would later become.

After the breakdown of her marriage, Heather returned to the UK in search of a new challenge. Given her father’s history, the armed forces seemed the natural choice and in 1999, she joined The Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service, or PMRAFNS, a regiment committed to providing the highest quality nursing to soldiers wounded on the frontline. The next step for Heather was to complete her RAF officer training which she found to be a tough, but thoroughly enjoyable experience.

It was during her first posting in Cyprus, however, that Heather experienced her first trauma in the military. While working as a midwife, Heather was involved in a serious accident when the ambulance that she, her team, and a five-day-old baby, were travelling in, blew a tyre and overturned.

While Heather hung upside down, the team realised that the baby was missing and had, in fact, been thrown from the ambulance and across several lanes of the motorway.

Miraculously, Heather was able to resuscitate the baby, an act which saw her nominated for the Sir Andrew Humphrey Memorial Medal but the events of that day would haunt her for some time.

Over the next few years, Heather saw frontline action in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Iraq, she worked as part of an IRT, an Incident Response Team which comprised of two people and depending on the severity of injuries, also included a doctor.

The IRT delivered emergency medical aid to wounded soldiers on the frontline and had evolved significantly by the time of Heather’s arrival in Afghanistan in the winter of 2006. As part of the Medical Emergency Response Team, or MERT, Heather, as an emergency-trained nurse, worked alongside a specialist doctor, a paramedic and a combat medic, delivering medical aid via chinook, with the additional support of an Apache.

During these experiences, Heather witnessed a number of traumatic experiences but had to keep up with the heavy demands of working in such a fastpaced environment. On one day alone, for example, Heather and her team responded to an Afghan compound that had been mortared, injuring dozens of local children.

As two members of her team treated the children, Heather responded to an incident in which a South African military contractor had been shot in the chest and was in a critical condition.

Under the terms of the Geneva Convention, Heather also came face to face with the enemy. On two occasions, for

instance, she resuscitated members of the Taliban. Under such intense pressure, Heather had little time to process the traumatic events that she had witnessed.

Heather left the PMRAFNS in 2008 but maintained her connection to the military. As a civilian matron, she has worked on a number of bases in England and Wales, including Bovington in Dorset and the Brecon Beacons. She has also worked as part of the nursing staff on cruise ships, traveling across the world.

The year 2016, however, proved to be the most challenging for Heather. In one twoweek period, she moved to Gosport in Hampshire, started a new job and lost her father. Not long after, Heather began to experience the symptoms of PTSD, including insomnia and nightmares. In addition, for the first time in her life, she began to question the medical decisions that she had made during her military career, even though her colleagues agreed that she had done the right things at the right times.

Consumed by stress and anxiety, Heather’s mental health began to rapidly deteriorate.

Shortly after, Heather admitted to her work colleagues that she was displaying the signs and symptoms of PTSD and they referred her to the occupational mental health team.

Heather admits, however, that this team wasn’t very good at helping her. With no understanding of military life or of the realities of frontline service, they failed to grasp the pressures that Heather had faced. Instead of helping Heather to feel better, her experience with the mental health team actually made her feel even worse. Having to describe in

detail the events she had witnessed and having to justify her medical decisions only caused further distress and anxiety.

Heather did, eventually, find the right people to help. After searching Google for details of military PTSD services, she found the charity, PTSD Resolution. She called them and described her symptoms and state of mind. The next day, she was contacted by a local therapist and her treatment began.

After talking with Heather, the Resolution therapist explained that her reactions were completely normal, given the nature of the situations she had witnessed. She informed Heather that trauma affects the mind in a cumulative manner. Just like a bathtub, trauma can build and build until it overflows and becomes unmanageable. As a result, Heather felt a wave of relief sweep over her. For the first time, she realised that these symptoms were, in fact, a completely normal response to the events she had experienced and that, more importantly, it was possible to make a full recovery.

Heather saw her therapist three more times over the next few weeks. Together, they completed the Rewind Technique, a non-

intrusive and highly-effective method of dealing with the negative emotions which arise from trauma. Heather recalls that it was a mutual decision to end her treatment. Both Heather and her therapist knew that she had turned a corner and was now equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to get her life back on track.

The treatment that Heather received from PTSD Resolution was provided free of charge but Heather felt so much gratitude towards the charity that she fundraised £1000 in a charity bike ride as a way of giving something back. In February 2017, Heather also spoke in praise of PTSD Resolution and their work in the House of Lords.

Today, Heather remains free from PTSD and speaks highly of PTSD Resolution. Speaking on the Rewind Technique, she credits this method as being the key to her recovery because, in her words, “It put to bed all of the events which haunted me.”

What’s your most treasured wardrobe item?

I’m not sentimental about clothes but I do have a favourite navy blue cashmere sweater – a bit shapeless but supercomfy for slouchy weekends.

Where in the world will you choose to be a castaway?

I’d like to be castaway on a Mediterranean island, so I can bask in glorious sunshine on a diet of olives, figs and deliciously fresh Mediterranean food.

Biggest memory item and what’s the story behind it?

Receiving my MBE from the Queen will be forever etched in my memory bank.

What item of jewellery or accessory would you take?

A wide brimmed sunhat to protect my skin. You can never underestimate the impact sun exposure has on the skin.

You can take the entire works of one musician to your desert island, who will it be.

Probably Bob Dylan, as his music has been so varied through his career, from ballads, to gospel to rock. I like music that tells stories as well as being good to listen to.

What animal or pet would you take?

My lurcher, Dudu as she is so incredibly loyal and good company (and makes a soft pillow).

Name one possession you would leave behind for a loved one?

I make family photo albums each year for the children and would leave these behind as a log of the wonderful moments and memories we share.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Rocket-transportation so when I’m travelling home from work trips I could be home in double quick time.

What would be your luxury item?

A continuous supply of plain dark chocolate to keep me going (and a fridge to keep it in)!

What movie would you take?

Some Like it Hot – I watch it every Christmas and it always makes me laugh out loud.

What would be your last supper before departing for your desert island?

Spaghetti bolognese made with grassfed Hereford beef from my own farm and a bottle of red Burgundy.

What would be your chosen beauty item?

Organic rosehip oil – one bottle does so many things, including helping to repair sun-damaged skin, which I might well need.

What would be your wild card item?

I enjoy sketching but never have the time, so a pad of paper and some pencils would help to keep me happy.

We have all been there; alarm goes off early in the morning, you get up, shower, get yourself ready for the day ahead, if you have a family you also get them sorted, you then look down and see the time and you have thirty minutes to be at work… phew you have made it to work in the nick of time!

Twenty minutes pass and the tummy monster begins to rumble. It then dawns on you that you haven’t had breakfast, so you head into the staff kitchen hunting through the cupboards, followed by your desk drawers to find what to munch on, to last you possibly till lunch time – and wait you forgot your wallet or purse for the local coffee bar.

The answer to stop having such eating emergencies at work is planning ahead.

In this article I will show you how to do this. It does take some planning, but it isn’t as hard as you might think.

Here are some ideas to help you get started making a list of healthy, on-the-go foods that you’ll enjoy eating, that are minimally processed but also contains a high ratio of protein and some healthy fats and carbs so you can satisfy your monster.

1- A few packs of dried meats, such as beef jerky or biltong or a few protein bars in your desk drawers or a few tins of either tuna/sardines and even better, some prepared hard boiled eggs (cook the evening before) will cover your protein needs when the time arises.

2- A few packs of unsalted nuts such as cashews, almonds or pecans will do the trick. A small jar of nut butter, which is great for dipping fruits or veggies, will provide a great source of healthy fats.

3- Some raw fruits and veggies such as carrots, cucumber, celery, apples, plums or oranges are all good but more so, are sweet and tangy to the taste buds, great sources of carbs and easy to travel with.

4- A few small packets of cheese and crackers; come on who doesn’t love this combination! Remember: the goal is to tame the tummy monster not grab the nearest donuts and cupcakes left over from the last staff meeting.

5- Finally, water bottles with water infused with lime, lemon or fruits to give you that refreshing taste to wash it all down.

Now that I have given you some ideas, the next step is to actually find a day to buy the foods on your list, and transport them to your workplace for days like today.

Put one or two pieces of cheese in a container, toss some nuts in another with cut up fruit and a few packs of jerky or hardboiled eggs. You don’t have to prepare everything in advance - in a pinch, you can eat a big bell pepper just like an apple! Just have a plan so you can get it fast when needed.

All that is left is making it happen. You have to remember to take the food with you when you leave the house - the first few times you do this, it will seem complicated and tedious but eventually it will become a habit and ingrain into your subconscious making it easier with time As it has to be easy, or you won’t do it.

The great result is that when life gets in the way like today and you realise you have awoken with the tummy monster, you will have an assortment of healthy and energy promoting foods at your fingertips!

The Ross Harriers Kate Justice looks at the dedication of the huge amount of people that keeps the country sport flourishing The Hunting season is now in full swing. The Foxhound packs officially begin in November, having spent the previous several weeks ‘Autumn Hunting’, but the Harriers start earlier, with our local pack – the Ross Harriers holding their Opening Meet this year on October 8th, on the border of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.

Harrier hounds were bred, in the majority, to hunt hares. They’re smaller, faster and considerably more mischievous than Foxhounds… some say the tradition of Hare Hunting pre-dates Fox Hunting by several centuries.

Things have obviously changed considerably for all Hunts since the Hunting Act 2004, or ‘The Ban’ as it’s often referred to, but despite this, most have remained in business. Hounds may not be chasing live, wild mammals any more… but that’s not kept the thrill seekers down. Hunts are run as a business, with premises, staff and an enormous amount of tradition and history thrown in. In the last decade, it’s become more and more obvious that this activity is about so much more than chasing animals – otherwise, how would it survive?

around 1820. Each Hunt has their own official ‘Country’ and this pack overlap and share with several neighbouring Foxhound packs. Hay-on-Wye sees the boundary to the north of the Country, with Huntley to the south, Monmouth to the west and Trumpet to the east.

The kennels are nestled in the middle of the rolling hills and velvet green of the Wye Valley.

Anna Ernsting, Joint Master since 2010, has been involved with The Ross for more than 16 years and is also the Secretary…. The man in charge of the hounds is Master and Huntsman Owain Fisher (pictured). At the age of 27, most, but not all of his hunting experience has been since the ban. Owain and his partner, Asher live at the kennels and take care of the pack of 32.5 couple (that’s 65 hounds). Owain knows every single hound by sight, by name – and by temperament. And they know him. It always feels like a phenomena to witness a Huntsman with his hounds – the way they move in a pack, respond to his commands and await (and obey) his instructions.

The work is hard, often dirty, requires constant early mornings and late nights… and pretty much rules out any holidays. This is the life Owain and Asher have chosen – it is so much more than a ‘job’. But, it’s the freedom and sheer exhilaration of galloping across country on a misty winter morning, the breath and sweat of your horse rising in the air, mingling with your own, as your pack of hounds run alongside you, hooked on your every command, that is the reward.

The adventure seeking supporters in the field - on horseback and on foot - would not be able to be there without the dedication and commitment of the Hunt Staff; and vice versa.

This, inevitably, leads to a sense of appreciation and camaraderie that there is absolutely no substitute for. Mutual dependence and deep love of the countryside, horses and hounds binds people together in a unique and infectious way. Yet The Ross – famous for being one of the friendliest Hunts in the area – manage to achieve this with no feeling of exclusivity: If you’ve never been before, if you have no idea what it’s all about… you will receive nothing but encouragement and a very warm welcome from day one. The season runs until late March, with a fully packed social program all year round.

Oral Cancer Awareness Month (1st – 30th November) What is mouth cancer?

Like other forms of cancer, mouth cancer is where a tumour grows on the surface of the tongue, lips, inside the mouth, throat or salivary glands. Mouth cancer can affect you regardless of whether you have your own teeth or not; this is why it is vital that you attend a dentist at least once a year.

November launches Mouth Cancer Action Month. Did you know around 18 people per day are diagnosed with mouth cancer? In the past 10 years, cases of diagnosed mouth cancer have increased by a third. It is thought that one in seven of us know somebody with mouth cancer.

Though 10% of the population admit they have never heard of mouth cancer, it is now taking more lives than road traffic accidents and cervical and testicular cancer combined.

Types of mouth cancer Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common form of oral cancer, which accounts for 90% of cases. SCC is seen typically to be a lump or ulcer that can be white or red in appearance.

There are a number of signs and symptoms that you should be aware of, including: • • • • • • •

A sore on the lip that will not heal White or red patches on the lips or within the oral cavity A lump on the lips or within the oral cavity Loose teeth Swelling within the mouth Sore throat or a feeling that something is trapped in the throat Change in your voice

Risk Factors www.MouthCancer.Org have recently released statistics stating that 91% of all cases of mouth cancer are directly related to lifestyle risk factors. These include: • Tobacco use • Drinking alcohol to excess • Poor Diet – having a diet rich in fruit and vegetables not only keeps you fit and healthy, it will also help reduce the risk of mouth cancer • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) • Being male – males are generally heavier drinkers and smokers (although ladies are slowly catching up!), and young males are not routinely vaccinated against HPV • Exposure to natural sunlight or sunbeds for long periods of time • Chewing or Smokeless Tobacco - There is twice as much nicotine in smokeless tobacco than cigarettes

Did you know?

• Mouth cancer risk is 87% higher in those who have been exposed to second-hand or environmental smoke, such as at home or work, in comparison to unexposed non-smokers.

• Two thirds of mouth cancer cases are linked to tobacco smoking. Smokers are three times more likely to develop the disease.

• A combination of smoking and excessive drinking increases the risk of developing cancer by 30 times.

Prevention Early detection saves lives and it could save yours. Have you had an ulcer or lump in the mouth, which has been there more than 3 weeks? Have you raised a concern about it? By visiting your dentist regularly unusual sights in the mouth are more likely to be flagged up. Both your dentist and hygienist are able to do an oral cancer screening on you through a visual check.

Prognosis & treatment The chance of recovery depends on a number of factors including the location of the tumour, the stage of the cancer and whether or not the cancer has spread into the blood vessels and lymph nodes.

Early diagnosis can give a 90% 5-year survival rate, as opposed to 50% with a late diagnosis.

Through The Keyhole Wildlife Haven and Free Range Children

Emma Logan discovers the perfect family farmhouse situated in a rural setting but conveniently located near some of Herefordshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prettiest towns

Lower Nicholson Farm is a hidden gem, tucked away at the head of a long private drive, surrounded by beautiful countryside in one of Herefordshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secret valleys.

Located between Bredenbury and Puddleston, it is not a difficult location to find, but the approach is certainly understated - leaving the Leominster to Bromyard road, you first turn onto what looks like a private lane, but is in fact a council adopted road which continues over a cattle grid and through a farm yard before turning into a green lane. Lower Nicholson Farm is the only property beyond the end of the adopted highway. Although the property is situated in a very rural and secluded position, it is convenient to the local market towns of Bromyard and Leominster.

The first time I visited was a sunny autumnal day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the view ahead of me was a long gravel drive with neat hedging and post and rail fencing either side. The house is not immediately visible, but the eye is drawn to the rolling countryside beyond, in particular a patch of bright yellow sunflowers. An unusual sight explained by the fact that the landscape is managed as a wildlife haven, with strips of game bird cover. A covey of partridges hurried ahead of me until I rounded a corner and saw the farmhouse and a collection of stone and timber buildings. A bucolic scene, probably little changed in several hundred years.

The owners, Giles and Lucy, bought the farm 11 years ago and immediately recognised the potential to create the perfect family home for their five children. With plenty of space to explore and enjoy the great outdoors and no

traffic anywhere nearby the setting is ideal for free-range children and animals. They set about sympathetically restoring the neglected farmhouse to its former glory with great attention to detail.

Through The Garden Gate As the trees lie bare, our media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, dons her Barbour and heads off to a country house and garden of distinction…

In South Herefordshire, surrounded by idyllic countryside, lies a glorious gem just waiting for your attention. It is the village of Much Marcle that we visit this month. (I have for some reason now set forth into a rendition of ‘Much binding in the Marsh’ as so oft performed by my dear father. Anyway I digress). The estate opening its acres before me, is the handsome Homme House, in the same family since the 1500s and in recent years acting as an exclusive wedding venue.

Set within around 200 acres, including 80 acres of woodland and a 2 acre walled garden, there is definitely much to be seen here.

Owner Jocelyn is my tour guide for the afternoon as the grounds unfurl in front of me like a giant puzzle, each piece a surprise and contributor to the greater whole.

I’m first taken by the amount of trees surrounding us. The avenue of oaks and beeches stand proudly alongside the ha-ha in celebration of the Queen’s Coronation – no ordinary examples either, here you’ll find the Turkey Oak and Red Oak – all variations on the classic favourites and illustrating a real eye for horticultural speciality. A Pinetum also offers up a trail of needled niceties including the famed Wollemi pine, not one but two in this garden! For the personal touch, trees have been planted for family celebrations and a trio of Gingko, Davidia and Monkey Puzzle mark the marriages of Jocelyn and her husband’s three children. (I’m told there is constant monitoring of the success of each specimen and a sprinkling of healthy competition between them.)

A bog garden offers an explosion of Gunnera and ideal damp ground for candelabra primulas and astillbes to set up camp, while nearby a water feature provides the Horticultural H20 symphony that is music to the ears of any passer-by.

Surely the icing on the wedding cake here is the Gothic Grade 1 listed Watch Tower, now named the Summer House and residing in the corner of the walled garden as it has done since the late 17th century. This has been subject to restoration in recent years to bring it back to its former glory. With grants including £100,000 from the Country Houses Foundation and work carried out in the majority by Winchcombe firm D A Cook, this beautiful building now gleams in white watching over the estate and offering twostorey accommodation of the cosiest configuration.

The walled garden that surrounds the Summer House is a work of art and made up of a variety of different themes. A wildflower meadow in one segment, an avenue of heritage espalier apples in another, including traditional local varieties such as ‘Bosbury Pippin’ and ‘Herefordshire Pomeroy’. A red and white mulberry rub shoulders and the pleached limes are in as straight a row as ever I’ve seen! Grasses here are very evident amongst the romantic herbaceous borders, from Miscanthus to Stipa gigantea, a favourite of Jocelyn’s and still wafting majestically as the days turn colder.

Like any estate, there is always work to be done, and ancient crumbling walls near the house are being re-built lovingly over time. Concerned that flycatchers, which regularly visit would be homeless as old boundaries were made good, Jocelyn has requested that holes be left in the new constructions to keep them happy. This really is five star ornithological real estate.

Although summer thoughts are far from our mind, I can’t leave without mentioning the Rose Garden. Jocelyn’s grandma kept roses here and around 6 years ago, Jocelyn and her husband set about re-creating a floriferous garden full of these classic blooms. Using David Austin plants placed closely together, with a trio of each variety, a mass of colour and scent has been created.

In fact, there is still the odd petal holding on for dear life refusing to leave this multi-coloured sanctuary, and who can blame them for this really is a place of peace and beauty.

Homme House estate is available for wedding hire and gardens open on occasion in support of local charities or for private visits on request.

Christmas Ham A fine roast ham is one of the centrepieces of a great Christmas feast, guaranteed to not only look fantastic but to carry on feeding those hungry mouths for the days to come! Here, Dan Bowley, Head Chef at the Kilpeck Inn, shares his recipe for the perfect festive ham. Dan’s top tip is to buy the best pork you can afford (organic, free range or outdoor reared).

INGREDIENTS SERVES 8:

METHOD:

Place the ham in a large stockpot with the other ingredients and cover with cold water. Slowly bring to the boil then simmer for around two hours or until the internal temperature of the ham reaches 68C.

One boneless cured gammon joint (about 2kg) 2 large onions, cut roughly into 6 2 leeks, roughly chopped 6 cloves 2 bay leaves 12 black peppercorns Peel of one small orange, cut into strips

For the glaze: • 2-3 tbsp English mustard • 5-6 tbsp soft brown sugar • Cloves

Carefully lift the ham out of the water and allow to cool slightly. Cut off the skin, leaving as much fat beneath as possible. Score this in a diamond pattern and place the ham in a baking tray lined with foil or baking parchment. Smear the fat with the mustard then rub in the brown sugar. Stud with cloves and put into a hot oven (preheated to 220C) for 40 minutes until the glaze is caramelised and bubbling.

A long warm Indian As we move into October and November, I am hoping as I write this that we are all enjoying a superb, long, warm Indian summer. You remember the ones don’t you?

Where the sun is a particular shade of gold, leaves are thinking about turning all sorts of colours, the evenings are too chilly to sit out, but you are reluctant to come in, so a light fleece or thin jumper is draped around your shoulders and your recently topped up wine glass is held close to you as the conversation of those around you gently ceases to allow nature her end of day display of magnificence…

Summer...

Wherever you find yourself, I have decided this month to bring the Languedoc Region to the forefront of our minds when choosing wine during the coming weeks.

The Languedoc is in the south of France and is, in fact, the country’s largest vineyard area. It is a land of geographic contrasts with small areas of flat land that edge sharply against huge rocky outcrops. The Languedoc Appellation is Mediterranean climate, which means it can easily compete with other ‘hot’ areas such as Australia and South Africa, as it is consistently warm every year.

Languedoc has been known as ‘New World’ in ‘Old World’ for many years now.

Grape varieties tend to be a trio of red grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre (in my opinion one of the most under-estimated grapes in the wine world, capable of real class). Although in areas such as Corbières-Boutenac the wine is centred on Carignan with the ‘GSM’ trio in support.

Healthy wind conditions help to keep the vineyards healthy and this, coupled with such a benign climate, means that the Languedoc vineyards are some of the least spray-treated in all of France.

Whilst this vast area is home to several iconic wines, for example Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine de la Grange des Pères, it is fair to say that, certainly for the last three to four years, the Languedoc has been sought out by many merchants as being the source of outstanding value soft, juicy reds which provide excellent house-style wines for many UK hotels and restaurants, however if you are willing to leap above this level, then you find yourself amongst Languedoc AOC and into Pic St-Loup or St Chinian or La Clape (my personal favourite).

La Clape appellation is a geographical oddity with its muddy white sheer limestone outcrops on Narbonne Beach and is a peninsular connected only on the north side to the rest of Languedoc. What I enjoy most about these wines is how the flavours of rosemary and thyme filter through onto the palate giving an almost medicinal edge, but do not be put off, as these wines are beautifully structured, with freshness, yet full-bodied with soft tannins.

(grape variety, as well as the name of the wine) meaning ‘lip-stinger’ in the local dialect; this is typically crisp with fresh citrus, but good citrus and not the sucking on a lemon, mouth-puckering horridness !

Languedoc-Roussillon is on its way to becoming France’s leading region for organic wine production. I believe that the Languedoc has the potential to produce top flight wines; there are some that are already challenging wines that were previously thought untouchable. It also provides some of, if not the, best quality/price ratio wines available in France.

To finish…I wish everyone a wonderful November and if you are celebrating Guy Fawkes or Bonfire Night in any way, that after all the fireworks (I do love fireworks!) are done, dusted and buried, that you pull the cork from a bottle of Languedoc and continue the evening…

Santé Further north, about 20 km north of Montpellier, is the appellation of Pic St-Loup. The limestone peaks of Pic St-Loup and the Causse de l’Hortus stand on opposite sides of a small valley overlooking the vineyards grown on their slopes. The high altitude that the vineyards are planted at ensures that the grapes retain an essential acidity, helped by cooling night-time breezes. The Mediterranean ‘garrigue’, so evident in La Clape, is concentrated here in rock rose, bay, juniper, rosemary, laurel and thyme. The usual red suspects are planted here, but are led by Syrah as the mainstay, backed-up by Mourvèdre – hurrah!! –; a small amount of Carignan is allowed.

Just so you don’t think I have been favouring the reds this month, I can reassure you that it is not all big juicy reds from the Languedoc. I am very, very fond of a glass of white Picpoul

Digby Lord "Why don't they ask the right question?"

On this lovely, crisp, autumnal morning I have just watched one of those employees at the BBC (aka the Biased Broadcasting Corporation) whose pay you're not allowed to know because his private company makes contracts with Auntie to provide his services and therefore he is not actually paid directly by the licence fee payer – an exercise (not!) in the transparency his like are always accusing politicians and business people of avoiding.

His abject failure to nail the interviewee with the follow-up killer question (why am I not surprised, after all, the subject of his questions wasn't a Tory or the PM?) got me thinking – always dangerous, especially when one is fuming! More on this anon.

First, I am becoming increasingly concerned with media bias, not in content, but in tone. I do believe that all radio and TV media outlets attempt and, by and large, succeed in achieving political neutrality when what is said, asked and shown over a medium-term period is analysed. Balance is achieved, but what is not analysed, commented on and acted upon is tonality. Reading a script of what an interviewer asked and watching or listening to the way the question was asked often reveals a huge difference. And that is where bias is revealed.

A good example is the interview of the Prime Minister by Emily Maitliss on the BBC's Newsnight TV programme in the immediate aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Was it right for our elected leader to be subjected to hard-hitting questions?

Absolutely. Was a supposedly politically-neutral interviewer entitled to infuse her questions with sneering, angry invective? Surely not? Given this was only a few days after the General Election, one can draw from her tone, not her questions, one's own conclusions as to Ms Maitliss's political views.

Another example is the apparently easy, gentler tone of voice that Andrew Marr uses when interviewing the bunch of Marxists currently running the Labour Party or the Leader of the SNP. On paper, the questions read fine; they deal with matters of the day, but the "clubbable" tone with which they are delivered can, with some justification, lead to a conclusion as to where Mr Marr's true sympathies lie.

Marr and Maitliss may well respond that their personal politics is their affair and not our business. True. They may state that there is no bias in what they ask. Also true.

However the tone they adopt in their interviews entitles us, the payer of their wages, to query their assertions.

On a similar theme is the BBC's treatment of Brexit. Hell will freeze over, I fear, before I hear one positive note from any of their broadcasters and journalists about our leaving the EU. Yet if there is a negative aspect to be reported, it goes first up on the particular bulletin and what's more, such is the tonality of the reporting, we're evidently all going to be inundated by a plague of locusts in the morning!

And don't get me started on the accusatory tonality used when anyone from the BBC sneeringly interviews a businesswoman or businessman. "Right, you're bang to rights.

Do you (the only wealth-creators and tax-generators the country's got!) have anything to say before we hang you? Because you are, of course, guilty."

So, to revert to my opening question, why don't interviewers ask the right question?

EXHIBIT A: Jeremy Corbyn, on the Sunday of the Labour Party Conference, is asked about "…your Trades Union paymasters". He merely replies, " …they're not my paymasters" and the BBC interviewer moves on.

His reposte goes unchallenged.

EXHIBIT B: Labour's Sir Keir Starmer and a representative from the CBI both say that Brexit negotiations are stalling, we are running out of time and it's the government's fault. The interviewer fails to observe that it would be very easy to get things moving; just pay what that parody of arrogant obduracy, EU Negotiator Michel Barnier, wants and things can proceed as required. Why on earth wasn't the question asked, "So what would you do?". Not, "What do you want?" which is the question that was asked, but, "What would you do in these circumstances?".

Fill in all the squares in the grid so that every row, every column and each of the nine squares contain all the numbers 1-9!

EXHIBIT C: Whenever a politician of any hue prevaricates in her or his answer, or ducks it by repeating a prepared few words which sets out (again!) the situation, but doesn't actually answer the question, why oh why doesn't the interviewer simply ask, "Why are you ducking the question?" or "Why are you apparently worried about answering my question?".

Is it because the interviewer is apprehensive, or has failed to do the necessary homework and is thus on uncertain ground to delve any deeper, or is it sadly, but maybe all-too-often, because the interviewer is only going through the motions with someone with whom or with whose views they actually sympathise? Surely we as licence fee payers deserve better than that?

When interviewed on radio or TV I have been known to reply to a question, "I don't know". The listener or viewer is not stupid; they do not expect you to know everything; they respect the honesty of such a reply. And it would avoid that famous, off-air observation from a certain Jeremy Paxman some years ago when faced with a stalling, prevaricating Minister who was ducking the question: "Why is this lying bastard lying to me?"!!

Best Weekend of the Year Claire Thayers’s top tips for enjoying a day at the races I hate the dark nights, loathe the wind and rain, dislike being cold...in brief I am not a fan of the winter BUT I LOVE racing and I LOVE warm winter woollies. As my friends will tell you, I am not a lover of summer clothes, as you cannot hide the bulges so well in flimsy cotton!

As I write this, I will be rallying my friends, begging them to come to Cheltenham to enjoy the November meeting...ideally to enjoy all three days but at the very least, make my favourite race day of the year – the Countryside Day on the Friday. If you haven’t been, then make sure you go this year, as the racing will be great, but there is so much going on and if you love shopping, it’s the perfect place to get some Christmas gifts!

Cheltenham has a certain style, and it is worth taking the time to get the outfit right; warm and waterproof is important. I have seen some interesting clothes over the years... nothing funnier than watching fake tanned women, teetering on stilettos in the mud on the grass by the finishing line, shivering in their little dresses,

wearing sodden straw hats, usually worse for wear. That look may work at Ascot on a sunny day, but National Hunt racing demands an altogether different approach.

Same can be said of some of the gentlemen that attend; pointy tan shoes, shiny dark suits and token yellow Paddy Power scarf – struggling with their Racing Post in one hand, Guinness in the other, as the rain lashes and the wind blows.

So choose shoes that can withstand the weather and shoes that you can walk in; there is so much to see, so don’t miss out because of impending blisters.

Choose layers that can be removed whilst at the bar, but warm enough to allow you to stay out on the course to enjoy the atmosphere. If you are lucky enough to be in a corporate box, that is lovely but nothing beats getting out there, placing your bets with the tick tacky men rather than the tote. (My top tip - don’t change your mind, I ALWAYS do... I study the paper, I work out who I am going to put my bet on and then as soon as I join the throng by the bookies, I watch everyone putting wads of notes on and think they know something that I don’t, and follow their choices – only to be disappointed when that last minute choice comes in last and my original choice romps home at 25/1!)

One other useful tip – take a pen. As runners are declared tick them off your race card and mark your winning choices for each race. I also recommend wearing a small over the shoulder bag – not only safer to keep an eye on but it gives you two free hands to carry all those shopping bags back to the car at the end of the day.

Don’t delay... buy those gorgeous leather boots you have always wanted, take the time to find the right bit of tweed and invest in a little bit of cashmere and a lovely new winter coat... and if that doesn’t keep you warm then just down a few hot toddys, always works for me and another good reason to have flat shoes.

This month they visit Bodrum Mr Jones observed that there have been varying degrees of bellicose unpleasantness between the Turks and the Greeks over the years and oddly enough, there are still two camps; those who firmly favour a holiday in Greece and those in Turkey. Those in the Turkish camp find the drier heat of Turkey far less humid than Greece, the water bluer, the food more varied and the people more hospitable and charming.

Mr Jones would say Bodrum in particular has always been highly underrated as a European holiday destination. To some it is the ‘new age’ Nice with its wide range of hotels and restaurants that are of surprising high quality, to those that think Turkey has never been up with the pace of other destination thoroughbreds.

The Bodrum peninsula is located on the western coast of Turkey (way out of harms way). It’s fringed with a crystal clear stretch of the Aegean and is only 20 minutes to the international airport.

The peninsula is a multi-dimensional gem with varying small bays and inlets, each having their own micro culture, catering to varying budgets and tastes. At its centre, tall, proud and exotic sits the seductive port of Bodrum.

The Peninsular Ignoring at all costs Gumbet,‘All about Essex’ sniffs Mrs Jones, look to many of the other areas; Turkbuku, has been touted in the NY Times as Turkey’s St. Tropez and attracts the glitterati from Istanbul and various European cities. Take a jeep or hire a gulet and visit the long stretch of sand that is Ortakent, the seaside village of Torba, the calm waters of Bitez, the virgin cove of Maz and fishing haven of Yalikavak.

Lazy bayhopping in a gulet, the traditional boat for these waters, was conceived in Bodrum. You can sail for a bit, drop anchor in

some empty little cove where nothing has changed in 2000 years and swim around in clear blue water. There are many boats for hire in the port of Bodrum but fortunately Mr Jones who considers himself quite a sailor and adroit in all matters nautical, struck a deal with the Captain of Bodrum Yacht Club and was loaned his beautiful yacht for an afternoon.

Mrs Jones preferred to leave the forays of the unspoiled peninsula until after 3pm, when the heat drops. Hop on a dolmus public minibus. They’re cheap and handy and criss-cross the high and ancient terrain of terraced fields, giving thrilling glimpses of islands, capes and inlets on a brilliant aquamarine sea. Take a good guidebook to seek out deserted villages, monasteries and ancient rock tombs.

Eating and Drinking As sophistication has sensuously and seductively smoothed its way up the side of Turkey’s coast, so has its cuisine. Its traditional food is still to be found for the traveller who prefers to go native whilst international tastes are matched by good quality cosmopolitan restaurants.

Go Native Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for Turks with which they drink tea saving the famous coffee for after the meal. It’s a salty and sweet experience, crumbling white creamy cheeses, black and green olives, big juicy tomatoes and cucumbers and sucuklu – a spicy egg and sausage combination followed by homemade jams and honeys.

Mrs Jones has a nose for finding out what the native’s prefer; for a truly Turkish experience, she found Sogan-Sarmisak Kafe at the southern end of Gumusluk, literally the onion and garlic café! In essence, it is an invitation to eat traditional Turkish food with a Turkish family but has evolved more into a Turkish café for guests – even the former German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder has been spotted eating there.

Very much it’s ‘nice-ist’ and ritzy restaurant, the Bodrum Marina Yacht Club is the place to look in and out – in to see who has moored their yacht next to yours and out to the best view in Bodrum. The Roof Marine restaurant is the best option where Mrs & Mr Jones ate extremely good sea bass cooked in salt.

Where To Stay Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay, Mr Jones was informed is a hotel favoured by top European footballers. Mrs Jones realised she was living the life of the ‘seriously spoiled’ in a self-contained complex situated in a private bay away from prying eyes.

More of the feel of a Caribbean Island hotel, Macakizi is another hotel where you want to be seen as the sexy and slightly chic rooms are housed in a series of whitewashed cottages, spilling down the hillside to the sea where the sun decks are lipped by gentle waves.

The bargain choice of hotels in Bodrum is the Aegean Gate Hotel, which is owned by a former Istanbul businessman, Ercan, who is a very likeable Turk and also on the ‘inside track’, a network which acts as an excellent concierge service. This great small property enjoys a peaceful corner of the area akin to staying at a small private villa with beautiful landscaped gardens and swimming pool.

Local Shopping & Bartering For the very best kebabs and let’s be honest, said Mr Jones, there are no authentic kebabs in the UK, make a special trip to Yalikavak where you will find Kavakli Kofteci – a place where most tourists pass by. After a salivary nosh wander up the road to Bitez Dondurma for some extraordinary ice cream to balance the unctuousness of the kebabs with the frozen creaminess of Turkish milk and fruit.

Eating Up Mr Jones had his own black book of favourite restaurants one of which was Kocadon just tucked away from the main drag in a cobbled courtyard. The owner, a delightful Dutch lady and her husband, the Turkish chef have created a seriously good restaurant and their starter plate of calamari ‘three ways’, quite exceptional.

Mick Jagger and Donna Karan are among the celebs who Mrs Jones had heard have picked up handmade sandals from the bazaar. Mrs Jones discovered that Bodrum has some serious retail therapy with the modern bazaar area an upmarket take on an original Turkish market with proper shops rather than stalls. There’s everything here from gorgeous Turkish and Central Asian textiles and colourful local pottery to a bling-fest of gold jewellery and snazzy beachwear. There is always room for bargaining, a favourite pastime of Mr Jones who had a wonderful time haggling over a Turkish rug – there is enormous value in Turkish luxury goods.

“The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now…”

This is the iconic phrase from Taylor Swift’s comeback song that has been trending on social media and bandied about since her single ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ was released.

She’s back with a new album this month and I can’t wait to hear more. This will be her sixth studio album... but what do we know about it? It’s out on the 10th November and is called ‘Reputation’, so depending on when you’re reading this, you may now know more than me at this point!

If you’re following Taylor on social media, you’ll notice that she recently deleted all of her Instagram photos and replaced them with videos and pictures of snakes, which of course sent fans into a frenzy at the anticipation of new music from Miss Swift.

Taylor instantly became famous for this in the space of a few hours, and you can now actually buy official Taylor Swift merchandise of snake rings and even snake hoodies from her website!

If you’ve been listening to Heart, you’ll have heard the first couple of tracks Taylor released, but in terms of the sound for the rest of the album, there is still plenty of speculation.

Rumours are circulating of a collaboration with Drake at some point but that said she’s been recording part of her album in Nashville! Could we be hearing a country vibe to parts of the album too?

In terms of WHO the album will be about, that could be lots of people! She’s had a well-publicised feud with Kim and Kanye, a spat with Katy Perry and things are still not rosy with her ex Calvin Harris! All in all though, all this drama could make for some great material for what should be a pretty ground-breaking new album!

She’s announced a few gigs in the states to coincide with album launch and we’re assuming further tour announcements will follow soon too. We hope she’ll be making at least one stop in the West Midlands!
