I cannot believe that Christmas has come around again so soon and I bet many of you are thinking the same…

Real Life Paloma Faith is an eccentric, Brit Award winning singer and

songwriter who has been entertaining us since her debut album in 2009. Neill Barston spoke to her about enjoying motherhood and the launch of her new album, The Architect.

Becoming a parent is just about the biggest event in anyone’s lives, bringing with it a raft of challenges and unforeseen scenarios that potentially pose the sternest of tests.

For Paloma Faith, the experience of being a new mum may have left her wondering where her next night’s sleep might ever be coming from, yet it’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and focus to her music.

“I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I am managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, recounting her whirlwind existence recording her fourth studio album.

The 36-year old has already amassed an enviable career over the past decade that has seen her become the only female artist beyond Adele to have three double platinum recordings to her name. While it’s been a road requiring plenty of hard graft, her artfully soulful sound and quirky style have undoubtedly played their part in propelling the Hackney-born star to success.

The singer’s latest offering, The Architect, follows boldly in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60’s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse. As she admits, she’s hoping her latest work, partly recorded in America, might yet crack the elusive holy grail of top slot in the album charts. If the slick, yet lyrically reflective lead single Crybaby is anything to go by, then the signs are indeed looking promising.

It seems the singer is enjoying a comparatively settled phase of her life living with French boyfriend Leyman Lahcine, and it’s apparent that starting a family has directly influenced her music.

“I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent - which does have an impact.With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family.

“I think things are changing in our history and maybe not for the better, which is something I’m concerned about. I feel there’s a sense of duty to talk about events.”

Much like any other artist in the limelight, her rise has come with the perhaps inevitable burden of being followed around by the ever-hungry paparazzi.

Everyone from Hello magazine through to the national red-top national papers has been waiting to secure pictures of her new youngster, whom she is keen to shield from un-necessary public attention. “I value my privacy more so than ever now, as it’s a real responsibility being a parent and I want my child to know itself first rather than everyone else feeling that they know all about them.”

Such determination to do things on her own terms has proved a consistent theme throughout her career and something that has helped her standout from the crowd. As she recalls of her childhood, the half-Spanish artist says that she always had something of a creative streak. However, it was far from obvious that she was destined to become a singer, with her initial studies being at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

“Growing up in Hackney, I was surrounded by lots of different types of music - from my mum, I remember listening to plenty of revolutionary music from the 60’s such as Bob Dylan, while my dad was really into jazz, which is where my interest in all that comes from.

“Later, when I was studying, I got into R and B dancehall as well, and originally I wanted to be dancer. Then I did my musical theatre and I think that music just chose me,” she explains of her formative years.

By her own admission, trying to sustain a fanbase and avoiding the trap of merely recreating a formula for previous hits has offered plenty of challenges. But as she enthuses, she is not one to rest on her laurels, and ‘likes to mix things up a bit’ which is certainly the case with her latest material. While her towering vocal abilities have continued to garner contrasts with the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with.

“I’m flattered by comparisons to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different.

“When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group.

“I was a massive fan of hers and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, Price of Fame, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy,” adds the vocalist with a note of sadness.

Her down-to-earth manner is a breath of fresh air in an industry awash with egos and her willingness to give something back was seen with her time on The Voice series. Beyond being a vocal mentor, she was determined to help those under her wing with additional songwriting classes.

As for her own career, having been nominated several times for a Brit Award, persistence paid off two years ago as she claimed a long-awaited win in the best female solo artist category. Being in an industry that is often quick to cast judgment, she felt there was a real sense of vindication in claiming the coveted accolade.

From her early CV that spanned everything from being a life model, cabaret dancer and bartender, to a gig as a magician’s assistant, her rich experiences have offered plenty of tales and adventures to fuel her inventive songwriting. As if to underline her determination, she famously walked out on a deal for a record contract when the agent watching her refused to stop texting on his phone. Needless to say, it was very much his loss and the wider music industry’s gain, for Paloma then secured a major deal that set in motion her strikingly memorable debut album.

To her credit, Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? blazed a trail into the top 10 and proceeded to lodge in the album charts for the next 100 weeks. But how does she look back on it now?

“Well, that was nearly 10 years ago and it was what it was. But I think it is great that I’ve managed to sustain a career as unfortunately not many people get to make more than one or two albums these days,” reflects the singer on what she feels is now an over-saturated market.

“It was amazing to win the Brit Award and to finally gain some acknowledgement. I come from a long line of people that haven’t really been acknowledged for what they did. I think there are a lot of people out there doing important work, like doctors and nurses who don’t get that recognition they should.”

With a major award to her name, there has been plenty of hype surrounding her latest release, bolstered by notable additions including an appearance from Samuel L Jackson and a duet with singer songwriter John Legend in the mix. Besides the album, fans will have to wait a little longer for her next UK tour, which kicks off next March. It’s destined to feature some of Paloma’s trademark selfdesigned sets to spark the tone for a hit-packed series of shows.

“The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring – as when I’m out there I am excited and feel that I’m in the right place,” adds the engaging singer, who may well have a little more to think about with a young child in tow, yet it won’t stop her from enjoying every single moment.

Ruthie began her 30-year career at London’s legendary Laine Theatre Arts and made her début in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed, Cats. Aside from playing almost every leading lady in theatre, Ruthie has since appeared as a judge on Dancing On Ice and toured extensively in the UK, USA and Australia. Celebrity Columnist, Ellie Mainwaring caught up with Ruthie ahead of her curtain call for her latest project, The Bravo Music Cruise, which sees Ruthie swap the West End for the waves.

Biggest memory item and what’s the story behind it?

A dance card from the opening night party of ‘Crazy For You’. It was one of the most exciting nights of my life – my breakout show and the first time I’d created a role of my own. I woke up the next day and the reviews flooded the morning papers. This was the beginning of my journey on this unbelievably privileged career that I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy.

Where in the world will you choose to be a castaway?

New Zealand – it looks so beautiful and I’ve yet to visit. I remember seeing the The Lord of The Rings and thinking I could manage that stunning scenery for the rest of my life.

What item of jewellery or accessory would you take?

My diamond eternity ring, which is a treasured 50th birthday gift from my dear friends Andrew & David, who are also godparents to my children. I decided not to celebrate my 50th and Andrew & David, who live in New York, refused to let me, declaring: “We can’t have this! Fly over and we’ll spoil you”… and they did just that! They gave me this very special ring as a wonderful end to the trip.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

To be able to eat as much sugar and rubbish as I like and never put on a pound!

You can take the entire works of one musician to your desert island, who will it be?

Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. It takes me to a beautiful and safe place in my mind.

Name one possession you would leave behind for a loved one?

I would leave behind for my children a pair of angel wings that hang on my bedroom wall, so they will always know I’m with them.

What would be your wild card item?

The entire collection of Netflix. One button and it’s all there. That’s sure to keep me occupied on a dark, lonely New Zealand night.

What animal or pet would you take?

My white Miniature Schnauzer, Poppy. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in my life, she never leaves my side.

What movie would you take?

Singing in the Rain – it’s the best entertainment anyone can get. Singing, dancing and comedy!

Award-Winning Independent Anja Potze is the Dutch powerhouse behind Anja Potze Fine Jewellery, an award-winning independent jeweller based on historic Friar Street in the heart of beautiful Worcester.

Anja moved to the UK from her native Netherlands when she was just 21 after perfecting her craft at Amsterdam's respected Vak School of Edelsmeden. She first worked for a small number of high end jewellers, including five years with London based Asprey & Garrard Group, where her customers included the late Baroness Thatcher amongst other notable names.

In 1994, Anja struck out alone and founded Anja Potze Fine Jewellery, specialising in jewellery made from certified diamonds and the finest Tahitian, South Sea and cultured pearls, which she buys from reputable suppliers all around the world. She also employs an in-house jewellery designer, Laura Golborne, who can remodel old jewellery and design new pieces to your exact specification.

In May of this year Anja’s charitable work was recognised when she won the 'Heart of Gold' award in the national Small Business Awards, for her ongoing commitment and generosity to Worcester and Worcestershire causes. Anja and her team have recently been shortlisted for the National Association of Jewellers ‘Retailer of The Year’ award as well as a local Worcestershire Hour Twitter Award.

There's Something About Hannah Award-winning Cheltenham designer creates stunning new designs from old or inherited jewellery

LIVE24 SEVEN FINDS OUT MORE What is it you do exactly?

I mainly design and make bespoke jewellery for individuals. I work closely with clients to come up with personal and unique items within a budget; any budget. These include engagement and wedding rings, ear-rings, pendants, bangles and bracelets.

I often re-model from existing jewellery and have even been asked to recreate beautiful lost or missing pieces from photographs. I don’t have a shop, instead working from my Cheltenham studio where clients come to discuss their designs over a glass of something nice.

Why did you decide to go it alone?

I have been lucky enough to have made an impact with some of my designs which have been recognised around the world. I’ve worked for some great people but feel I can only produce the very best if I do it my way. This ‘dream’ became a reality because of a chance meeting in a Cheltenham pub with my now business partner. We shared a bottle of wine and he helped me to find the courage to take the plunge.

You may not yet have heard of Cheltenham Jewellery Designer Hannah Kimber but many tip her to be one of the big names of the future.

Hannah, 30, recently established her own studio and is already stirring things up with her stunning, bespoke designs.

You say you can create designs from old or inherited jewellery?

Absolutely. More and more people are asking me to do just that. Often there’s sentimental value in the jewellery that I am supplied and I’m able to breathe new life into it. Clients can also offset the value of old gold against the final price.

How would you describe your approach to design?

I like to think of myself as the personal jeweller to my clients. I design wearable pieces with a wow factor. It can be a dainty piece but there will be a delicate hidden detail, or a larger more striking piece that really stands out. Quality, craftsmanship and attention to even the tiniest details are so important to me.

When I design a bespoke piece, it is very much a reflection of the wearer, so I take time to get to know the individual. It is a lovely experience to help someone design a piece of jewellery that they will wear for life or hand down to relatives in the future and there is no greater feeling than seeing someone wearing and enjoying your designs.

What’s your message to anyone reading this that might need some jewellery?

Dreaming of having white teeth in time for Christmas? Well now you can!

In recent years, a great number of people have turned to ‘teeth whitening’ in order to lighten the shade of their teeth. Studies show that a good smile can transform someone inside and out, as those who have straight white teeth tend to come across with more confidence. 61% of us have been attracted to someone by just their smile alone!

What should I know before I consider Whitening?

There are a number of things that should be considered when thinking about teeth whitening. Firstly, you should note that it is a regulated treatment. The process should only be performed by a dentist or another regulated dental professional, this can include a dental hygienist or therapist under a prescription of a dentist. You must also consider that whitening may not be appropriate for everyone, your dentist will be able to assess your suitability.

There are a number of products on the market for teeth whitening and you may have seen DIY home kits on the Internet – those can be hazardous to you. You may also be aware of beauty salons offering whitening services; this is illegal if there is not a dental professional present. The effects of incorrect usage of whitening products can cause irreversible loss of tooth structure, heightened tooth sensitivity, pain, altered tastes and chemical burns to the soft tissues in the mouth, particularly if there is decay present. DIY home kits are not as effective as whitening prescribed by your dentist as you may be required to create your own whitening mould, which may be a poor fit and allow bleaching gel to seep out onto your gums.

In surgery whitening – Zoom! 1-hour treatment Take home whitening trays – generally takes 2 weeks to complete Whitening Strips – these are best when used as whitening maintenance and top ups. This process involves putting a gel whitening strip over the teeth for 60 minutes at home over a two-week period.

Is Whitening Safe?

The initial stages of this treatment will be carried out on the dental premises and more often than not in one or two appointments. The remainder of the treatment is carried out at home.

Yes, if the whitening is carried out properly and by a professional, whitening is very safe. If you are carrying out whitening at home, you must follow whitening directions properly and carefully. Where there is history of sensitivity your dentist can prescribe a lower strength bleaching product.

The dentist will carry out a full comprehensive examination, possibly with x-rays, to ensure you do not have any decay or active gum disease.

An impression of your teeth will be taken to enable a dental laboratory to produce custom made bleaching trays for you, that fits tightly and doesn’t allow leakage of the whitening gel.

Once the trays are ready you will be given pre-loaded syringes with bleaching gel in them.

As and when you are ready you can start the bleaching. The bleach comes in different strengths. There are day and night options, the day whitening gel is 6% hydrogen peroxide, and the night whitening is carbamide peroxide, which comes in a higher strength of 10% and 16%.

You are likely to see results within 3 days and full results after 14 days.

If you are pregnant, a nursing mum, have decay, restorations, crowns, white fillings or periodontal disease, these are contraindications of the whitening gels.

The Goose Is Getting Fat...

And So Am I! Claire Thayers vows to lose weight before the Christmas gluttony – and every year she says, she fails Why do we do it – is it all those expensive TV ads, all our favourite supermarkets trying to outdo each other? Perfect dining rooms, with enormous fat, golden, mouthwatering birds being carved at tables laden with festive foods, tempting tipples, fantastic flowers, coordinated crackers and perfect people.

The reality as we know, is far from that.

In our house, it is all down to me and don’t get me wrong I love having people for Christmas lunch but we look a little different to those on the TV. Let me share this vision of beauty – me in my Christmas jumper (why do I wear it when the temperature in the kitchen is hotter than the devils kitchen?). Bright red face, mascara dripping into the gravy, every pot and pan scattered around the kitchen. I know, I can hear you shouting at me... it is all in the preparation and I should have followed delectable Delia and cooked it all and frozen it all, a week before – but with presents to buy, things to do when is there time?

Rushing between oven, microwave, and steamer, my timings list getting splattered with bread sauce and turkey fat, with the ink run and the paper ripped. I dash around the kitchen, often with bottle in hand, taking swigs to get me through it somehow, god knows how... I manage to get it ALL on the table, ALL at the same time and ALL at the same temperature! (Top tip – don’t worry about starters, just leave blinis, sour cream and smoked salmon in the lounge for everyone to gorge on, along with the chocolate that everyone had in their stockings, whilst crying over those less fortunate.)

THEN they descend, like ravenous locusts... piling food on top of food; the plates are never big enough. I will be honest, it’s far

from pretty, as everyone helps themselves, each plate looking more like a trough, an unrecognisable mix of everything, errant sprouts spilling onto the bright white cloth, cranberry sauce dripping, gravy splattering – nothing like those beautifully presented dishes on TV. Half way through the meal I ALWAYS remember I have left the stuffing in the oven and I manage to salvage it, burnt and inedible - no one wants it, no one likes it - but one has to make one’s own stuffing on Christmas day - god only knows why – because my mother did - so I always have, every year - it will hit the bin, because it always does.

The trauma of getting it all off the table, leaves me in even more of a sweat. Leftover food is muddled up with bits of cracker, the odd marble, random hair clip and soggy joke. They are never funny – all those trees cut down and for what... note to self no more crackers.

Christmas pudding. Now that’s always a disappointment even though I always make my own, months in advance. It is just another family tradition and we always wish as we stir.

(Please note, it never works for me, same wish every year and I am still waiting for the DB9 to be delivered with a red bow on Christmas morning, which never arrives!)

I digress. I will be found, in the corner of the kitchen, amongst the mountain of washing up, pouring the brandy over a big fat pud, trying to light it, without setting fire to my eyebrows and the annual challenge of getting it to the table flaming and looking gorgeous – with holly on the top. It NEVER does and everyone is always too full to eat it and I can guarantee the brandy butter will still be in the fridge mid February.

Cheese, always Stilton... always left... coffee, Bendicks mints – because you just have to and a glass of port... or two... or three.

Then finally, it is time for me to crash; a sweaty heap of food splattered, over stuffed, Christmas jumper wearing pile of lard and oh boy do I crash. I am never awake to see the Queen’s speech.

This year, I intend to do things differently... stuff the stuffing, sod the sprouts, ?*?! off pud – I am off to do some volunteering and if anyone is brave enough to take me, wearing that jumper and if they won’t, I can donate all the money I would have spent on that food to do some good and it will stop me putting weight on. Time to create some new family traditions, so watch this space…

THOUGHTS FOR DECEMBER 2017

Digby Lord You find me, Dear Reader, on a crisp, sunny autumnal Sunday morning, settling down to write a few reflections for your delectation with my mind full of, “I cannot believe it!” from Board Breakfasts yesterday and today.

My small firm, Digby Jones LLP, provides my services as Chairman, Director or Advisor to AON Risk Solutions, Triumph Motorcycles, Thatchers Cider, Celixir Stem Cell Research, Argentex Forex, On-Logistics and Urica Invoice Discounting and also supplies me to all those conferences, lunches and dinners where I am fortunate enough to speak.

It isn’t a limited company providing services, the sort being attacked as a type of tax-avoidance by the Chancellor, but a Limited Liability Partnership that has just two self-employed, risktaking, tax-paying partners – my wife Pat and me.

Lady Jones certainly contributes to the success of the firm, she isn’t just a decorative partner – no matter how attractive that situation may well be. One such contribution is our regular Board Meetings over breakfast at weekends. A couple of hours discussing the week just gone and the week to come, crystallising thoughts, changing stuff and sharing successes, but also talking about (and taking lessons from) outcomes that may not have been amongst my more memorable moments, or rather may well have been, but for all the wrong reasons!

We also have a good trawl through the weekend Times and Financial Times and a catch-up courtesy of This Week. It is this trawl that often leads, over the toast and coffee, to a fair few outbursts straight out of the Victor Meldrew playbook. I thought, as you leaf through the pages of this excellent magazine, you may care to let me share a couple with you, as who knows, you may feel that you’re not the only one thinking like this, or indeed, you may alternatively consider me irredeemably on the wrong side of the argument...a position often taken by Her Nibs whose response to my enquiry as to whether she will still love me when I am a fat, bald, old and objectionable bigot was, “But I do”!

So on 11th November, when at 11:00 the entire country silently remembers those of our countrymen and women and those of our Allies in Freedom who, regardless of the colour of their skin or the God they worshipped or the amount of money they had or the home they came from, paid the Ultimate Price so that we may be free, it was galling to read that a Cambridge University tutor has been admonished for emailing the poor little snowflakes starting their university course this autumn with the blindingly obvious fact that it was going to be necessary to work hard, to be focussed on the subject matter and to concentrate so as to derive the greatest enjoyment from the course they had chosen. Evidently the vulnerable, delicate strawberries (they bruise easily!) complained that their mental health was at risk from the imposition of such pressure and they objected to being told they were going to have to work hard! No wonder they want someone else (us, the taxpayer) to pay for their three years at uni when they don’t intend to do what they’re there for in the first place! My VMIR (Victor Meldrew Impersonation Routine) was developing nicely.

Then I entertained my Wife and Business Partner to a letter in the Times from a lady called Jane. (By the way, my father always said I was to treat females as ladies until they proved themselves otherwise!) In the light of the huge number of scandals and revelations engulfing show business and politics, Jane wanted us to know that a long time ago a colleague at work put his arm around her in a taxi; she was pleased to report that this disgraceful act of sexual predation led to the miscreant and she being happily married for some thirty-five years!

Most definitely, alleged acts of abuse, sexual assault and rape should lead straight to the judicial system and the (normally) women who have been subjected to such appalling behaviour should be supported and encouraged all the way, but I can’t help

feeling that this is all getting out of hand, with the whiff of a witch hunt wafting around. “He put his hand on my knee 15 years ago. I didn’t stab it with a fork or bring my knee up hard or slap his face. I did nothing, but now I am ensuring his career is ruined…” leading to the “Shock Horror” of the past few weeks, surely demeans the very proper “outing” of loathsome, predatory, sexual bullies whose defenestration is welcome and not before time? Surely it makes life more, not less, difficult for the abused female who needs the help and understanding of all of us.

As my VMIR hit a high point, Her Nibs was heard to observe “Balance in All Things”; exactly! Perhaps we should not blame the complainants, but the media who give it oxygen and, of course, the consumer of their product...er...all of us, for our salacious drooling and rueful schadenfreude.

And I now must close my monthly fulminations. Lady Jones has reminded me of Number One on her list of Top Business Tips: forget all that stuff about financial or strategic discipline, communication communication communication, staying constantly focussed; nope, “mens sana in corpore sana” is Her Nibs’ watchword, which means I’m off for a perambulation on this Remembrance Sunday, ever grateful to those whose courage and selflessness will never be forgotten; without what they did, our Board Breakfasts would never happen.

Serving Gloucestershire To Rehouse Unwanted Pets Cheltenham Animal Shelter has been supporting the people and pets of Gloucestershire and beyond for 91 years now and have been on their Gardner’s Lane site since 1940.

The Shelter rescues and rehomes dogs, cats and small animals – rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters etc – caring for around 800 animals every year. With 100 animals on site each day the staff and volunteers work tirelessly to make sure every animal gets the very best in care including food and exercise, cleaning kennels or cat pods, training and socialization as well as love and compassion. The rigorous rehoming process ensures each animal finds the perfect home and matches animal lovers with their perfect pet.

As well as providing for the unwanted pets in their care the Shelter also has a very busy Education Team, working to reduce the numbers of strays in the future. Primarily this involves talking to children, either with visiting groups or by going out to schools to address assembly or individual classes. There are also opportunities for Scout and Brownie groups to tour the Shelter, or for children to attend the very popular Animal Experience Days during the school holidays. Work experience is available for any young people studying an animal related subject and the Shelter works closely with Hartpury College to provide opportunities for their students.

The H.AL.T. Project is another successful education tool, working with young people not in mainstream education to instill the idea of responsibility, empathy and respect

for others. Pupils will attend the Shelter for two weeks and be responsible for their own animal while here, combining classroom work with animal care.

To provide all these services the cost to the charity is £650,000 a year, and with no government or local authority funding the Shelter must be completely selfsupported. There are a number of businesses on site that contribute to this figure, including boarding facilities for dogs and cats, a grooming salon, pet supply shop and very successful charity shop, as well as CASVet, the on-site veterinary surgery that not only cares for Shelter animals but is also busy with the public’s pets. By using any of these facilities you are directly contributing to the work of the Shelter.

The remainder is raised through public donations and corporate support with activities throughout the year. Popular annual events such as the Shelter Open Day (1st Saturday in July) and Christmas Evening (1st Friday in December) are successful fundraisers, and there are many other activities and collections throughout the year which are well supported by the community, many of who have rehomed pets from the Shelter in the past.

The Shelter is continually developing its facilities to provide better care for the animals, with recent additions including an all-weather training paddock to allow dogs to get exercise through winter and a behaviour training room to work with dogs suffering separation anxiety or who may struggle in a new home. The latest project is a Young Animals Centre for the care of kittens and puppies, which the Shelter is seeing in increasing numbers. This new facility should be ready in Spring 2018, but opportunities remain for supporting and sponsoring the building.

Sandra Paul looks at the continuous problem of sexual harassment in the workplace The uproar created by Harvey Weinstein over the allegations of rape and sexual assault has sparked a big debate globally about the misuse of power by men.

Weinstein has tried to minimise the fallout by attributing his behaviour to ‘sex addiction' as though he is the victim who deserves sympathy because it is not his fault he has this disease. The awful thing about this case is the fact the abusive behaviour was an open secret in Hollywood and not openly commented about because of his dominant position.

Comedian Seth MacFarlane made a revealing joke at the 2013 Oscars: “Congratulations," he said, "You five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein."

There is a pattern of alleged abuse here.

Young women attempting to have careers and climb the ladder of success were targeted.

If spurned or challenged by the women, Weinstein would hit back with venom, threatening to jeopardise the career of the young women who dared to deny him.

His pathetic retort – that these incidents were ‘consensual' - is laughable. What sane person thinks the fat, balding, Shrek-like monster could seriously attract the most beautiful women in the world?

Examples of his behaviour aren't limited to the film industry but are endemic to all parts of work where men dominate. It is not, in my view, necessarily a sexual thing – much of the time it is actually about bullying and making sure the woman ‘knows her place'.

I've read many articles written by men and women who have harangued the countless women who failed to go to the police or indeed make it public at the time of their assault.

I spoke to lots of my friends about sexual harassment in the workplace, and all but one had experienced it. All of them acknowledged it was horrifying at the time, but they had learned mechanisms to deal with it. They all conceded that they had not made a formal complaint about it because they believed this was part and parcel of being a woman in the workplace. "Why bother telling anyone?" "Nothing will change." "My career was on the line." "I didn’t want a reputation as a troublemaker."

In my twenties, I had to leave two jobs because of the treatment I was experiencing from the Directors in charge. The first time I resigned because I thought it was more comfortable than rebuffing his advances on a daily basis and experiencing his anger and bullying because I wouldn't submit. The very next job I took, the same thing happened, again on a regular basis. It was as simple and ‘innocent’ as the married boss insisting on a cuddle and kiss on the cheek each time he saw me. Except it gave him an opportunity to have a good squeeze. To refuse was petty right? After a while, I made a formal complaint because I didn't want the physical contact all the time. The response eventually came back that if I didn't continue accepting his behaviour I would not get his support and help in my career. Apparently, he was doing this because he saw potential in me.

This man was 'God', and the senior men working beneath him would not stand up to him. Were they complicit in perpetuating this behaviour (I know I wasn't the only woman to receive his ‘special' attention)? I would say no. We all experienced his bullying in different ways. Inevitably, to further my career, I had no choice but to leave.

It is unbelievable that in 2017 we are still acknowledging that this behaviour is widespread. It also does not end when women reach their 30s, 40s or 50s as some might expect. The Waste Produce of Christmas Kate Justice is determined to go meat-free over the festive season What’s on the Christmas Day menu for you this year? For most people, turkey is still the most popular choice… some have goose, or beef… and roughly around 10% of us will be meat free.

Whatever it is, there is one guarantee; inevitably we will end up chucking food out. What is it about the festive holiday season that makes us buy so much extra nosh? In the past, we may have fretted about shops being closed and so, stocked up to avoid starving to death over 48 hours. Now, though, there’s always a shop open somewhere. It must be a combination of giving up the diet over Christmas, the immensely powerful marketing of festive treats and more time around the house evidently requiring more fully stocked fridges and cupboards.

I’ve been told that the equivalent of 2 million turkeys will be thrown away this year… and around 7 million sprouts. Over purchasing and cooking disasters are mostly to blame. Even before we delve into the ethics debate surrounding the waste of life, or the gluttony of the first world versus the malnutrition in developing countries, there is the big fat question of how many people recycle (compost) this unwanted food?

We’ve still got two scooped out, carved pumpkins on our compost heap… we are in danger of it taking over the house!

However, it won’t be due to wasted turkey: This year, we are having a vegetarian Christmas dinner. Oh, the protests I have had from the rest of the family. You’d think I’d asked the children to pull each other’s fingernails out – not go without Pigs in Blankets for one day. I reminded them that I had a brush with a vegan diet last month, so things could have appeared even less appealing.

I managed to stay Vegan for about three days, but unless I stocked up on soya versions of meat / cheese / milk, I discovered that either I am very lacking in creativity… or it’s actually really hard to do. (And I had chips for lunch twice). What on earth does a vegan Christmas dinner consist of? I am well aware any vegans reading this will be yelling at the page or tutting in pity at my ignorance.

My choice is not political – I have just heard so often, that cutting out animal products has made people feel better - and I wanted to test it out. But as a vegan, I spent so much time scratching my head about what to eat and forgetting every time I was offered a cup of tea, that I just gave up…

However, since then, I still haven’t eaten meat – and as someone who would normally eat steak twice a week and a bacon sandwich for breakfast MOST days, this is quite a change. What I’m currently doing is a small step… the next one being to have one vegan day a week. I’m just desperate to know if it will work! Will my skin look better, will my energy levels go up and will I sleep better?

I’m sceptical, but not enough not to try it. One problem is that to truly learn something from such an investigation, I will undoubtedly be required to cut out all animal products for more than one day a week. I’m working on some menu ideas – and there’s a lot of advice available. Another problem though… is that I will also undoubtedly be required to cut out wine for more than one day a week as well. How can I measure improved sleep / energy / skin and blah blah without that?

It’s Christmas, so that is very much ON HOLD. (Although I see the makings of a New Year’s Resolution.) For now I will remain meat free, as a build up to my experiment and will endeavour not to buy more sprouts – or anything else – than are required.

Mrs & Mr Jones Our very own couple, Mrs and Mr Jones, hosts our travel section. This month they visit New York Mrs & Mr Jones decided to add some festive sparkle by visiting New York during winter. They were first-time visitors to the Big Apple and had a long list of sights they wanted to see. But, in between times, they made sure to sit and soak up the arts and café culture of this fast-paced, 24-hour city.

Getting There American Airlines, British Airways, United Airlines and Virgin all fly direct from London to New York, taking approximately 8 hours.

On arrival, grab a yellow cab from outside the terminal building to take you to Manhattan Island. Once there, you can get around by subway, bus or taxi. But the best way to get to know the city is on foot.

New York Mrs & Mr Jones based themselves near Times Square in Mid Town, close to a lot of the tourist hot spots. This is where you’ll find Broadway, Madison Square

Garden and the shops of Fifth Avenue. But there are lots of neighbourhoods to explore, all adding to the multi-faceted culture and vibrancy of the city.

If you want to discover the neighbourhoods where New Yorkers live, head out of Mid Town. Chelsea and the Meatpacking District have plenty of galleries to explore, as well as thriving nightlife. Greenwich Village is full of brownstone apartments, independent shops and specialist food stores. The former industrial areas of Nolita, Soho and TriBeCa are bustling with restaurants, bars, boutiques and cobbled streets. Harlem has an atmosphere all of its own. Once home to some of the greatest black politicians, writers and artists, it has a community feel with a gospel church on almost every corner.

There are loads of museums to explore, so Mrs & Mr Jones agreed to pick one each. Mrs Jones was keen to explore MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art). While she enjoyed wandering through Picasso, Pollack, Matisse et al., it was the Warhol that caught Mr Jones’ eye, particularly the Campbell’s Soup Cans and a study of Marilyn Monroe - a vision in gold.

The 9/11 Memorial Plaza and Museum are located next to the new 1 World Trade Centre building (Freedom Tower) in the financial district. While sobering to visit, the Jones’ found it sensitively created and thought provoking. It’s possible to ride 102 floors up to the observation deck of the Freedom Tower for incredible views.

Mr Jones opted for The Met (the Metropolitan Art Museum). They discovered this museum, in Central Park, spans over 5000 years of art. It was the most enormous museum they had visited and they got lost several times. A great tip here is to plan your visit in advance and work out what you really want to see.

From The Met, take a walk through the 800-plus acre Central Park.

Mr Jones was keen to pay his respects to John Lennon at the Strawberry Fields memorial. They crossed the road to find his last home, the Dakota Building, on West 72nd Street. Central Park is one of the iconic places to skate in winter. Lace up your skates at the Lasker (northern end), or Wollman (southern end) rinks.

The Jones picked a clear day to see the Statue of Liberty. After a walk around Wall Street and the financial district, they made their way to the East River to board a hop-on hop-off boat. As well as

They found the view truly mesmerizing as the sky turned pink, and the city beneath them started lighting up. They warmed up afterwards in the cosy rink-side café of Bryant Park’s Winter Village, where the ice rink sits against the backdrop of the Empire State Building.

While enjoying the main tourist sights in Mid Town, the Jones’ wanted to see some of the city’s cool neighbourhoods. They enjoyed exploring Harlem and Greenwich Village.

One of the best ways to head south is to walk the High Line. This former disused rail track has been turned into a linear park, elevated 2km above the ground. Not only is it a quick way to walk

from 34th to 14th Streets but it’s also very peaceful and a great way of gaining a birds-eye of the busy streets below. It is still beautiful in winter with some evergreen trees and berries. Mrs Jones enjoyed spotting sculptures and art installations along the path.

At the southerly end of the High Line, the Jones found themselves in the West Village.

Here, Mrs Jones made her own pilgrimage to the ‘Friends’ building on Bedford Street and followed in the footsteps of Carrie Bradshaw, popping in for a cupcake at the Magnolia Bakery.

One of the most legendary bars in New York is PJ Clarke’s, where Frank Sinatra ended his nights on the town. In addition to their oyster bar, they serve to-die-for burgers and other classic fare. While you may think rooftop bars are for summer, head to the top of The Strand hotel for amazing views of the Empire State Building through the glass retractable roof. It’s a small, buzzy venue with a great choice of cocktails.

A trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without some shopping. A walk down 5th Avenue provides a whole array of shops including Saks and FAO Schwarz. And, of course, Mrs Jones insisted on a browse in Tiffany’s. For extra bling, Trump Tower is just next-door! Bloomingdales can be found on 3rd Avenue and Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square. Look out for a Visitor Savings Pass at Macy’s, offering a discount to international visitors.

The Jones finished their stay with a Broadway show. Feel good shows include the Lion King and Aladdin, along with such classics as Les Mis, Phantom and Chicago.

Food & Drink You can’t skip breakfast in New York, whether a plate of bacon, eggs and hash browns or a massive stack of blueberry pancakes dripping with maple syrup. To keep you refuelled throughout the day,

If you’re looking for traditional all American fare, the Brooklyn Diner offers such classics as chicken potpie and Nonna’s meatloaf. In search of the best cheesecake in the city, the Jones discovered Eileen’s Special Cheesecake in Nolita, which certainly lived up to its promise.

Where to Stay Mrs & Mr Jones stayed at the Millennium Broadway, a mid-range hotel, right near Times Square. Their Deluxe Room looked down onto the bright lights of Broadway. Although they didn’t spend much time in their room, it has a great location in the heart of the action. The hotel’s restaurant, the Bugis Street Brasserie & Bar, serves Pan Asian cuisine.

If you really want to push the boat out, the palatial Four Seasons Hotel occupies one of the most exclusive spots in the city, between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. For something more boutique, The Refinery Hotel takes its name from the garment district’s millinery trade. It has a jazz bar and some rooms have views of the Empire State Building.

Breathtakingly Grand Dining…

I was asked to review the restaurant of the newly refurbished Lygon Arms in Broadway, a place where King Charles stayed and assembled before battle and where Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor stayed at the height of the scandal surrounding their affair.

With a history dating back to 1300s, it was purchased by the owners of Chewton Glenn and given a dramatic, yet sensitive, overhaul.

The bedrooms and all areas of the hotel were redesigned by Anita Rosato Interior Design who perfectly capture the rich 600-year history of the property, while providing amenities the luxury modern diner and guest expects!

The dining room is breathtakingly grand; marvel at the vaulted painted ceiling, huge fireplace and stunning works of art before you take your seat in one of the comfy chairs and well-spaced out tables amid the mood lighting that sets the evening dining scene perfectly. The staff, many of whom are Australian or from New Zealand, understand first class service, but more importantly they serve that up with a spot-on sense of humour.

Part of the expensive refurbishment by the new owners, the new Lygon Bar & Grill and Lygon Wine Bar, are a super addition to the Cotswold scene, there’s a sense of Soho House about it all, but if I may say, a wee bit more stylish. The drinks menu offers a selection of fabulous cocktails, some classics, some with a twist, whilst the dinner menu is refreshingly honest, great meat and fish dishes as well as salads – the Chewton Glen cheddar cheese soufflé, artichokes and chestnut cream was simply delicious, if a little generous in size for a starter (I’m not complaining), I definitely recommend it! The table next to us were enjoying the sea bass, butter beans and cockles and recommended it to us. Tempted as we were, we had our hearts set on a ribeye steak that was cooked to perfection and full of flavour, a quality cut complemented by a wonderful peppercorn sauce. The Cotswold ale battered cod and chips was, I am pleased to say, more fish than batter, unlike some restaurants I’ve dined in. Seasonal in approach, the menu has something to tempt all, to include an awesome-looking chicken and mushroom pie with that divine flaky pastry on top and a super twist on a traditional lasagne – portobello mushroom lasagne.

After a long day of meetings and not wanting to make too many decisions on a Friday night, we left the wine choice up to the team, who brought out a cheeky Californian wine, a Brownstone Cabernet Sauvignon, that was rounded, had a nice depth and a lovely after taste.

After failing to persuade our gorgeous waitress to do an impression of the haka – despite a very dodgy impression by myself that had her in fits – we finished off the delightful dining experience with a seasonal crumble with clotted cream ice-cream, which has swayed me from disliking pumpkin and raisins to thoroughly enjoying them, something I never thought possible.

Take a walk around Broadway before or afterwards and at Christmas time it’s lit up beautifully with lights decorating all the trees.

KILPECK INN – RECIPE

Banana, Dark Rum & Chocolate Cheesecake Head chef Daniel Bowley, shares his recipe for a delicious banana, dark rum and chocolate cheesecake, one of The Kilpeck Inn’s most popular desserts and a guaranteed crowd pleaser to make this Christmas.

¾ packet of chocolate digestives, crushed to crumbs 125g melted butter ½ tin dulce de leche (or condensed milk, boiled in the tin until caramelised) 3 bananas 100g soft dark brown sugar 25ml dark rum 300g melted white chocolate 300g soft cream cheese 100g icing sugar, sifted 3 gelatine sheets, soaked in cold water 284ml double cream

Line a 12-inch cake tin with baking parchment (a springform tin will be easiest).

Mix the biscuit crumbs with the melted butter and push down into the bottom of the tin with the back of a spoon to make the base. Put in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm up.

In a food processor, blitz the bananas, rum and brown sugar to a puree.

Melt the white chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Once melted, mix in the cream cheese and then the icing sugar.

Gently bring the double cream to the boil then add the soaked gelatine leaves and allow to dissolve completely.

Put the dulce de leche in a bowl then add two thirds of the double cream and gelatine mix and whisk until smooth. Add the remaining cream to the white chocolate mix and whisk.

Add the banana puree to the condensed milk. Using a ladle, layer the banana mix and the white chocolate mix in the cake tin, one ladle at a time.

Place in the fridge and allow to set overnight.

Through The Garden Gate As the year comes to a close, our Media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, seeks out some festive cheer from a National Trust treasure…

Brush off your boots, plump up your scarf and follow me to a winter must see.

An easy journey, not far from the M4, and near to Bath for a spot of Christmas shopping en-route, the National Trust’s Dyrham Park stands majestically awaiting its festive public.

Arriving first to a modern car-park and ticket office, there is no clue as to what lies ahead.

The long and winding road (yes I too am singing that line) entices you towards treasures to come as you set off on foot, but fear not, for those keen to get straight to the main feature, there is a regular bus service which takes you to the front door in minutes.

The house appears in a dip below you almost like a welcome soup glowing in its ornate bowl surrounds. So ladle ready, here we go.

First call was the elaborate Greenhouse, home to oranges and lemons galore (Oops, I’m singing again!) with heaters fired up to keep the citrus cosy.

After a tea and delicious cakes (almond and raspberry particularly memorable), the gardens were our port of call. (Port, did someone mention port? Don’t mind if I do!

Merry Christmas!). Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, welcome to a 21st century garden with a real nod to the past.

Built in the 17th century by owner William Blathwayt, these gardens were formal and fantastic. However, from the late 1700s, as the wave of English landscape style gardening covered Britain under the direction of Capability Brown, the formal gardens were replaced. Blathwayt’s terraces did survive, built on a slope to the north of the house and an ideal area for guests to stroll and admire the long reaching views to

Bristol and beyond. Unfortunately over time, these were hidden from view as they became overgrown and neglected. In 2001, clearing began and work is now ongoing to re-instate Mr Blathwayt’s lost terraces – so prepare to walk in his footsteps along the Abor Terrace or Long Terrace – a woodland walk that is already full of atmosphere and only set to get better over the next 10-15 years.

Back on level ground and the areas directly in-front of the main house are also being developed in order to recreate parts of the original vision, although it’s true to say that they are already pretty eye-catching and on a crisp sunny day, a delight in which to dawdle.

The Avenue consists of 8 long borders arranged like toasted soldiers, 4 across times 2 with a central path. Formal in style and simply stunning with yew clipped into balls and cones and white posts throughout where honeysuckle and jasmine await their turn to blossom in 2018. At the end stand Blathwayt’s gates – the original entrance to the house.

Turn a corner and it’s not hard to see the influence of the great Dutch gardens, as parts of the original formal water gardens tantalisingly trickle around you, the vast Lower Pool reflecting the same tree branches and building stone that the gentry of centuries past would have gazed upon. Meanwhile an ancient mulberry tree stands undisturbed (apart from the soil below,

cleared to make way for fresh planting), its branches contentedly weighed down with the pleasant passing of time.

Fruit is in fact very evident at Dyrham Park, from standard gooseberries to figs to the Nut Walk and Perry Orchard. Grow your own really was a case of show your own in Blathwayt’s day when so much in a garden was to impress and highlight your wealth.

Status was also apparent in the number of beautiful trees on site and the 270 acre deer park certainly displays many handsome specimens. These include a number of tulip trees (Liriodendron) that were sent to Blathwayt as seeds. (Folklore alert: they say the leaves of this tree are shaped with the end point missing as this was the leaf that Eve grabbed hold of when being banished from Eden.) Keep your eyes peeled for another gorgeous specimen too, the fallow deer that roam the grounds – waiting to salute Father Christmas and his herd as they pass by later this month.

Talking of the great man himself, where some attractions are closing their doors for the season, Dyrham is raising its voice with Christmas cheer and a host of seasonal offerings. From decoration making to a Frost Fayre and The Lord of Misrule Trail – where you can search out 20 mischievous elf like creatures, this really is a festive family fandango - one that I would highly recommend. In fact, this was a garden so good, that we actually got locked in being so absorbed and failing to realise the time. If you do venture forth, make sure you leave before closing, there are stockings to be hung!

“The festive season is finally here!”

If you’re like me, ‘tis the season to spend some time with the family, have drinks with friends, and eat a ridiculous amount of cheese!

For me, music also plays a massive part of the festive period.

On December 1st, Christmas officially launches on Heart and we play an hour of the biggest and best Christmas songs at 8am in the morning, and our listeners go crazy! So this month, I thought I’d pull together a list of must-have songs for your Christmas party playlist. Whether you’re hosting a Christmas Eve, Boxing Day or New Year’s Eve party, these songs simply HAVE to be on there.

Ed Sheeran has, without a doubt, been one of the biggest stars of the year. So first up, his first single from his 2017 album, Shape of You, needs to be the first track played out of the speakers. Be sure to play Galway Girl later on in the evening and watch as your guests perform an Irish jig!

Has anyone else noticed that lots of artists have released Spanish-influenced music this year? It started with Justin Bieber’s Despacito which achieved incredible success across the world. Enrique and X Factor winner Matt Terry were hot on Justin’s heels with their release of Subeme La Radio later in the summer. Finally, Little Mix featured in Latin American boy band CNCO’s single Reggaeton Lento to complete the trilogy of 2017 Spanish hits. I’ve got to admit, I have loved every single one of them. These songs are bound to get your party started!

No festive party would be complete without the Christmas classics everyone loves! Of course Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas has to feature somewhere on the playlist, as does Wham!’s Last Christmas. My final piece of advice, finish the playlist with the huge anthem that is The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York. Cue everyone wrapping their arms around each other in a circle and all singing very loudly (and probably very badly at this point) which will end your party on a big high!
